Season 5 Idol, Ace Young, introduced a performance from Season 4 runner-up Bo Bice on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon last night.

Bo, doing his southern rock thang, performed “The Long Road Back.”

I heart Bo Bice. My first Idol fave! :-) Not sure I’m digging the orchestra as the backing band, but it is the telethon. I’ll cut some slack.

    Nice props from Ace, too!

Thanks, MJ! I fell asleep and I think local coverage might have usurped it anyhoo.

  • HotHotHot

Good to see Bo again. He sounds great!

  • poporange

Bo was the reason I got hooked on American Idol. Nice to see ACe also season 5 still my overall favorite…

  • ianaleah

    American Idol Landmarks :
    Fantasia “Summertime”
    Bo Brice “In A Dream”
    Adam Lambert ” Mad World”

  • dante

Bo is one of my fav idols!!!!!!

    Great to hear his voice!!!!

  • Susan M.

I like Bo. I didn’t see a single episode of his season, but from other performances, I really enjoy him. (But I’m glad that thing he and Constantine did when they walked around with the mic stand is over.)

And for a bit of shallow I can’t get past ‘“ I so WISH he would cut his hair!! I hated that look in the ’70s. Hated it when he was on the show and still CANNOT get into it. Ace looks soooo much better with short hair.

He looks like my much-older hippie cousin in the ’70s. Yikes.

Ehh. Bo Bice can sing, but I’m really not a fan of this style of music.

    Ace looks great.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I agree… Ace looks way better with short hair and more style. I didn’t mind the tight t-shirts(ahem) , but this is way better. /superficial.

  • abbysee

I just adore Bo Bice! I don’t care about the hair, but now that many mention it, I wonder what he would look like without it. I could listen to him all day, I love his voice, I loved him on idol. In a Dream is one of the very best idol performances. In my top ten for sure.

  • JosieX

I didn’t watch AI back then so I don’t know Bo, but he is good, I like him. Anyone remember the one hit wonder from the 70′s “Smoke from a Distant Fire”? Bo reminds me of that guy.

  • auntieaimee

Oh, very cool! I love Bo. Great voice and just a ton of natural charisma. He’s a country-rock guy through and through. It’s who he is, and I dig that.

  • gingerly

I love Bo and his “Southern Rock thang.” Too bad it’s so not marketable now. I’ll still be listening.

  • hermy

haha he looks really happy, good for him. Not into his music but I like him.

  • gingerly

This is the man, as Ace Young mentioned, who paved the way for rockers on American Idol. People always want to mention Chris Daughtry, but Ace knows, as does David Cook who, it seems to me, and corrects everybody who says it was Chris. While Mr. Cook had absolutely nothing to do with Idol or its history before his stint, he learned very well who was what and how it fit together, and most importantly, how it could benefit him.

  • skylight1219

Bo deserves all the credit for opening the doors for rockers on AI. If it hadn’t beenf or him, AI would’ve forever been bubblegum pop music. His southern music may not be popular radio wise, but, he is never without work or an audience. He’s one hugely talented man.

I think he carried the mike stand around on AI because they weren’t allowed to play instruments until season 7. That was a huge mistake, IMO.

I love Bo Bice! Also wish he’d cut his hair, but that doesn’t detract from his great voice or talent. As Paula used to say, Bo is the REAL deal.

  • Studio57

gingerly- Kings Of Leon describe themselves as Southern Rock on their website, and they are HUGE right now. If you listen to their songs, you could very well imagine Bo Bice singing them. Unfortunately he just didn’t have the writing skills to pull it off but southern rock is by no means dead.

  • gingerly

KOL isn’t even southern rock…not the way that Bo Bice is. I would consider them pop rock and fairly discount them. What you want to call yourself means shit…if it means everything, then I’m a 24 year old fucking hot chick…hope you get my meaning.

  • JP

I hoped Bo would beat out Carrie during Season 4, but alas, he didn’t. I still think his southern rock sound beats her country songs any day.

And I agree that Ace is adorable. I think he’s the best-looking guy ever to be on Idol and surely one of the nicest and most genuine.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Oh I think KoL qualify as Southern Rock. They are just the new Millenium version of Southern Rock whereas Bo is old school As to writing…I’d put his lyrics on his Sugarmoney cd up against KoL no problem.

Totally agree. I may be wrong, but think the tendency may be to not consider someone successful because you do not see them on the charts or making televised appearances and such; but I believe the success is shown by the continuous work that the artist does. I can speak for my season 6 favorite, Phil Stacey, whose calendar last year was packed, even though there was a large gap of time between his first single and the new one. I, too, voted for Bo over Carrie, and I am so glad to see him doing well, especially also after all the physical struggles he went through.

  • gingerly

Hi, Starrlight. Lyrics are a small part of what makes somebody a certain genre. I do like KOL. I don’t consider them Southern Rock, and if that’s the consensus, well I’m sorry for Southern Rock. I had higher hopes for it. I can understand how they aspire to this genre. I can’t, however, see that the many people who I talk to who identify with this genre and discount them are wrong. It may just be that KOL are a pop version and that those who hold this genre near and dear don’t want to pollute the genre. I hope you understand that I’m ok with KOL, but that in being ok with them, I see them as aspiring to the genre and not even there…I’d be delighted to consider them southern rock, but as of yet, nope, no can do.

  • leome

Bo’s rock is something that sounds very american. In my european mind I’d call it country rock. That’s the vibe I get. Songs that would be played in those very american movies in some small city in the middle of America, with horses and that.

Anyways, not something I’m used to and not something I enjoy… but I love the guy singing it. And he really has great hair!

  • jmom376

Thank you for posting this MJ. It was great seeing Bo again. He was my favorite idol his season and I was very sad when he was not crowned the American Idol. I got used to it over the years and was actually very shocked when my favorite won this year.

  • Squirrely

His voice and music makes me feel nostalgic. I will always love Bo.

  • gingerly

Yeah, he has a very special nostalgic thing. I don’t think it’s any less than the current thing. The artists I spend money on are more toward that nostalgic thing than anybody. That’s my thing (though I’ve spent more than my share on David Cook due to his voice). I don’t know that either will make any who goes for that sound a special act. I’m just grateful that he brought rock to American Idol. Bo Bice, to me, was the true pioneer past the drivel that is pop music, and for that I’m very thankful!

  • Squirrely

I love that his music makes me feel, very few artists do that to me.

  • SybilTrelawney

I was a fan of Bo’s in the day, and I still like him. Bought his second album, much more authentic Bo than the first. What Clive Davis did that poor boy! The hair didn’t bother me, because I knew a lot of guys who looked like that in college! Dating myself, heh.

However, if you’re not liking the ultra-long look, check out his audition on YouTube. His hair was shorter then, about shoulder length, and curlier. It looked nice.

Bo was the first real rocker on AI, and I really do think he paved the way for David Cook. Creative choice of songs given the even more limited choice of songs they had back then. And he’s got a great voice. Chris…well, I liked him okay, but he never really struck me as a real rocker, and still doesn’t. YMMV

  • FifthHouseSun

    Love Bo. Van Morrison Lite.

  • anniem

I love Bo Bice’s voice. He was my favorite from Season 4 and I wish that he would have had more mainstream success, but I guess his style of music doesn’t translate into mega sales and success in the music industry. Too bad. Thanks so much for posting this video, MJ.

  • ggdoorsfan

i don’t care what you call bice’s brand or style of music – it rocks, he rocks and to me that’s all that matters.. he was my fave to win in season 4, and i still think he’s the truest and most authentic rocker to come through the show… give me those southern boys, with those bluesy rock voices, long hair and all – it works for gregg allman, and for me, it works for bo….

mainstream success would be nice for him, but bo will never lack for fans, and an audience to appreciate him.. he’s still on my radar, and i hope he keeps on kicking it for a long time to come…

  • anniem

Oh I agree that Bo has a faithful audience that appreciates and loves him. I had the pleasure of meeting him once after a show and I was impressed with how genuinely nice he is, so down to earth, and really cute too! RCA tried to make him a pop star, but that is not what he is. His second album was all Bo, and I’m looking forward to his next album.

  • BootStar

Another Bo fan here. So great to see him still doing what he loves. I personally don’t give a rat’s ass about “commercial success” since few of my favorite artists fit that definition anyway. Bo is the real deal and deserves major credit for infusing Idol with something beyond vocal gymnastics and pageant performances. He absolutely laid the groundwork for Daughtry and Cook, whose success on the show, in turn, made it possible for contestants like Kris Allen and Adam Lambert to get an opportunity to demonstrate their respective talents. All roads lead back to Bo IMHO.

I don’t know this guy , I guess I don’t really know much about all the other Idols. But he is good though this song is not exactly making me all excited. But there is something interesting there, so I will try to check out his CD’s. Does he have quite a few CD’s issued by now ?

I really do not sweat myself out trying to categorize the music I am collecting.
I am not a child of routine so my taste in music just do not have a rigid pattern. Though I tend to collect all the music that a singer /band comes up with whom I feel affinity for . I do not want to miss a thing so I have to have all of his/their music. So let me see if that happens with Bo Bice, I need to know his music some more .

  • tierbee

Thanks for this, MJ! Bo is my original Idol rocker love and I so badly wanted him to win Season 4. He’s awesome.

  • Hope07

I’ve only lurked previously, but had to thank MJ for this. Bo was the first Idol I just totally fell for, and is still one of just a few who have been really special in my mind. So good to see him doing what he loves, and is so good at.

  • meme

Love me so Bo Bice. I stayed up till 3:15am to hear him sing on the telethon. Can’t wait for his new cd. Ace and Bo are a great team together.

  • hwc

Wow. That was a good song.

  • Grammie Kari

Bo did such a nice job! I agree Ace and Bo are a great team together. It is so good to see Idols have success after the show.

On the hair thing… Bo’s hair is thining and a good cut would take weight of the roots and scalp. Nothing short, but maybe around the neck and ear cut.

He also seems like a good guy. Wishing him the best!

  • lucy

Bo’s rock is something that sounds very american. In my european mind I’d call it country rock.

Me, too. I don’t really understand why Bo couldn’t easily qualify as a country singer — albeit of the rock-y variety, but he’d be far from the only one — and thus be in a *hot* selling genre, so he could get a real contract.

He really seems like a country rocker to me, with all the necessary ingredients for that. Of course, I guess I’d like him to qualify for just about anything that could help give him a more solid career path. Love Bo.

  • sidewalkstory

I hadn’t watched AI in a few seasons because I watched too many reality shows. When I saw Bo Bice I said I would just watch until he was voted off, and, of course, I watched the whole season with him. If he didn’t lose me by disappearing after his season I probably would have followed him a little closer. Still love the guy.
