The Voice coach, Blake Shelton, is bitching again to Access Hollywood about NBC’s decision to run back to back seasons. via Access Hollywood

“I don’t know how much longer I’m even going to do it,” Blake told Access Hollywood’s Michelle Beadle on Monday in New York City, of continuing with “The Voice.”

“It’s their decision [for us to leave], in that they’re the ones choosing to do back to back seasons,” he explained. “They really leave us no other option. As far as Christina and Adam and Cee Lo and I — if we want to tour, there’s not a chance of that doing back to back seasons. That’s not acceptable to me.”

“At some point, I’ve got to go, ‘You know what– this has been awesome. It’s changed my life, but it’s not my life,’” he said. “I’ve got to get back to what I really do, and that’s country music.

“[And] getting drunk after shows and Tweeting,” he added, with a laugh.

I think it’s reasonable to assume Blake won’t be returning for the Spring cycle of The Voice.

I thought they were going to have a sprng panel of judges and a fall panel of judges t0 give Adam, Blake, Christina and CeeLo a break.  Was this ever a thing?

I thought the original judges were free to leave a season or 2 to tour but their seat would be kept open for whenever they wanted to come back?

I assume when Blake signed his contract he knew this type of deal would be up to the discretion of TPTB.  If he couldn’t agree to this, why sign?  His rash words do make him come across as rather whiny, don’t they?

I think he’s got a valid point. I would have been much happier if they’d waited to do this season. Not only for the judges but the audience too. They are going to reach the saturation point that much sooner. Dumb move on their part, imo.

He’s right. The Voice is my favorite show right now, but I’m not in the mood to watch it twice a year. I bet all my money this show can’t survive the spring cycle with the same judges.

It’s a thing that was discussed here, because it’s just common sense.  But I don’t think it was ever a possibility that the producers mentioned.

Well, that’s what JLO said About AI, that she had a lot of projects and that it took up her time….same with Steven who decided to tour again….you can’t do both.  You can’t do TV and tour, or the show has to allow you time off…..but NBC IS DESPERATE!  Look at what happened to Jay Leno’s show.

Didn’t Burnett say something along the lines that these 4 would always be the permanent judges. If they needed to leave for some time, they wouldn’t get replaced, just stand-ins?

I wonder if the judges are a little upset that the producers are speeding up the show’s demise, and not just by airing it twice a year.  In less than two years it’s gone from something new and shiny that was a huge hit, to a show that is still doing well, but looks worn out already.

  • elliegrll

The producers said that these four would always be the main judges, but that they could always take a season off.

I think NBC has a plan and probably won’t continue to air Fall and Spring seasons of the Voice. I suspect that this fall airing was directed at taking down X Factor to the point where it is outright cancelled or with a substantially reduced budget. Even if the Voice does not air on the same night as XFactor, it can take away some of its buzz and create singing competition fatigue, making it harder for XFactor to reach the 12 to 15 million Idol type viewers that Fox wants. Next year, I would not be surprised if they moved AGT into the regular season. It is #1 during the summer and held up pretty well against Season Finales and Season openers. So AGT in the Fall and the Voice in the Spring.

I typically think Blake is annoying and somewhat of a d*uchebag but I agree with him. What the heck are the NBC producers thinking having back-to-back seasons of The Voice? Especially since they NEVER produce any stars nor do they show their winners ANY support after their season ends. They are basically wasting everyone’s time and people will be bored of the show quick.

Since apparently the only on-camera people benefiting from The Voice are the judges and they are unhappy that they don’t have the time to go out and test drive their new-found popularity, maybe we should think about a new concept for the show: keep the same contestants every year and rotate out the judges! It’ll be like a game show. Which never-hit-it-big or flagging celeb will get the last member of their team across the finish line and win that new and improved shiny career?!

Blake might have felt TPTB would never be foolish enough to run the show consecutively.  Who woulda thunk?

An article with mj bitching about Blake’s bitching how funny

I think NBC made a  mistake in doing back to back seasons as well.  I say that as someone who enjoys the Voice.

However, I also don’t believe a word that comes out of Blake’s mouth.  He’s a brilliant marketing brand builder.  Would not be shocked if he’s just trying to stir the pot.

I think it was Carson that said they could take some time off, but I could be wrong.

They need to look at Dancing with the Stars. A show that was fun, until it was around twice a year.

  • tripp_ncwy

Well the show is not going to slow down if he doesn’t come back.

I can understand Blake complaining because it is a dumb thing for NBC to kill the second hit it has (football is the first), but Blake doesn’t have to do the spring season.  Christina has already announced that she’s not doing it; Maroon 5 supposedly has tour dates around that time.  Nobody is forcing Blake to do it.  He can go on tour if he wants.  They’re supposed to have a whole new lineup of new judges for the spring season anyway, right?

  • http://twitter.com/holeigh_annie Holeigh

The Voice has made Blake more visible to the public at large, but he’s never had a problem with selling his music to his target audience, so I don’t think this really counts for him.

NBC is milking The Voice for all it can while it can.  X Factor and American Idol air once a year each and their ratings are declining.  Better for NBC to grab all the money possible.  It’s not like the rest of the primetime lineup is doing well.

That said, by May 2013 there will have been four complete Voice cycles within 23 months.  That sort of saturation can’t be good, even if Mark Burnett, John De Mol and NBC were willing and able to help the top-end contestants establish music careers.  However, the network and the producers haven’t shown any inclination to develop stars.

After season two, Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken all had platinum albums.  Hell, even Justin Guarini’s album hit the Billboard top 20.  Then came Carrie Underwood in season three and the Idol machine was rolling.  There’s no reason The Voice’s best singers should have nothing to show for their efforts after two seasons.
