Blake Lewis - Heartbreak on Vinyl

Listen to a preview of the title track, “Heartbreak on Vinyl” from Season 6 runner-up, Blake Lewis’s upcoming album, due to be released 10/6.

  • Listen to “Heartbreak on Vinyl” HERE.

With a heavy 80′s influence, the tune is a slice of infectious pop, with a danceable beat.   Me likey.

If you found yesterday’s Yahoo Music interview with Blake interesting (I did!), check out Part 2 right HERE.   He talks about mixing it up with producer Nigel Lythgoe to get his way, and other challenges from his run on American Idol.

You can pre-order Heartbreak on Vinyl at Amazon here:

I don ´t know why but I click the link and can ´t hear anything… I found the interview very interesting, specially the second part, I like Blake and his style so I wish him succes with his new cd.

Good catchy Song. Very 80′s influence. Duran Duran-ish. Infectious. Fun

I like it. Then again, I like Blake. I will def download this. And I really liked the interviews. He is very much his own man; good for him. I think his beat box version of You Give Love A Bad Name is one of the top five performances in Idol history.

This is a much better song than the previous one ( Sad Song) , should be his next single.

Ugh, what a tease. That link said there was a limit of 3 plays, so to hear it I’d have to enter my email address and wait to be sent a bunch of crap. I guess I’ll wait till it hits YouTube or something.

Well then, you’re in luck. Here it is from YouTube…

    Thanks, halfie! You’re not… uh… half bad.

Clip’s not half bad, either, though I’d “half” to hear the other half before I’d actually buy a CD (unlike Adam’s, which is an auto-buy, sight unseen, sound unheard)

Thanks, halfie! You’re not’ ¦ uh’ ¦ half bad.

    You’re welcome, but I prefer “half-good”. I’m a natural optimist.

I like it a lot. I didn’t think I liked dance/electronica, but this is very 80s New Wave/Brit Pop. Pet Shop Boys, Human League, The Cure, that kind of thing. Yeah, I could definitely see me buying this. way to go, Blake! I’ve never been a big fan of his, although I agree that “You Give Love a Bad Name” is one of the five or six top performances on Idol ever. And I definitely preferred him to Jordin, although Melinda was my fave that year. Anyway, I’m glad to see him doing well. I always root for people who give Nigel a hard time!

I love this! It’s definitely got that 80′s alternative vibe, with a bit of The Kinks thrown in for extra spice.

Here’s a good video of Blake performing Heartbreak on Vinyl at a radio event:

I like this much better than Sad Song. As others have noted, this is very 80′s New Wave. It sounds almost exactly like a Pet Shop Boys song from the late 80′s. I’m not fond of Blake’s personality but I have to give him kudos for this particular song. It isn’t necessarily my cup of tea as far as genre but he captures the vibe of the New Wave/Techno genre very well with this one.

  • PattyH

I really wanted to like this but the voice just isn’t there for me.

  • CRB

Blake says “The main thing is about them [his label] getting me.” Well, I don’t “get” him, musically, at all. I still think he has a certain charm to him though.

  • hwc

That was pretty good. I couldn’t make it all the way to the end, but I listened to about half of it which is more than I give most Idol dreck. I thought it was OK, dog. His fans will enjoy it, I think.

Definitely gonna love this new album by Blake Lewis. Loved him during the show and thought his first album was pretty awesome. This will be very different from the first but sounding great and “Blake” so far. This track is definitely better for me than “Sad Song”, though I agree Sad Song is the better first single. HOV is very catchy and unique, I’m lovin it :P

For those that kept saying Blake doesn’t have a good voice, well I don’t think for his genre he needs a “big” diva kinda voice to be great, his voice suits perfectly for his style I think. He’s a great and experienced musician/artist, IMO.

  • PattyH

An artist can have a good voice and still not have a diva voice. Good and diva are not interchangeable. I like Kris Allen’s voice but he’s definitely not a diva voice. Music is so subjective, I guess Blake is just not my cup of tea.
I wish him well though. He’s a musician who has been working hard at his craft for quite a few years.

  • Daniel B

I’m sort of amazed how good this is. I was disappointed in the songs I heard from Blake on the first album, so I never bought it (not my preferred genre anyway) but this song is really good. MUCH better than ‘Sad Song’ (why do they *always* lead off the first single with the wrong song?).

I wish this were the single instead; Blake might have a fighting chance at getting a second shot at the big time.

Reminds me of Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and Duran Duran (back when they were good). Really liking that 80′s vibe.

I really enjoyed this. I can see this being a hit for him.

  • Truthiness

I actually liked this song more than I thought I would. It’s very 80′s based, but that can be really in right now and I think that this song could do pretty well in that space. Good bass and some decent hook-age.

Yeah, I actually liked it. This should definitely be his new single and I hope the rest of his record is as viable as this song.

  • david90531

PattyH: Yeah, I think it’s just personal preference really. I just feel like some people focus too much on Blake’s vocal, instead of the production and creativity he puts into his work. Well at least I’m a Kris fan too ;-)

  • sunchick

Hey, I really dig this tune. The lyrics are actually pretty clever. Def has a retro 80s nu wave-ish vibe, but I wouldn’t say Duran Duran. Reminds me more of Howard Jones.

  • Daniel B

Yeah, actually. It is very similar to some of Howard Jones best stuff.

  • Barbariba

I like Sad Song, but I love HOV! Finally Blake has a label that believes in him and is willing to invest in his music, unlike his previous label that didn’t do diddley squat to promote ADD.
Blake has worked very hard at his craft and my hope is that his new album will be a success.
