Update: According to Blake Lewis via tweet, the video is a fan video and not official, as the New York Post reported…

Check out the premiere of Blake Lewis’ new video for his next single, “Heartbreak on Vinyl” via New York Post’s Popwrap.

The video doesn’t feature Blake in a single frame. Instead, it works as an homage to 80′s and 90′s films. Can you pick out your favorites? There’s a slew of John Hughes’ films, Spinal Tap and High Fidelity

And did I mention that I love this throwback to 80′s dance and new wave music. It’s one of my favorite tunes released by an Idol to date. No lie.

“Heartbreak on Vinyl” is the title track, from Blake’s new album.

I love it! Pretty in Pink is my favorite 80′s flick. The song really works with all those films. I love Blake’s new cd.

  • larchcat

Wow, what a great video. I bought the album a few weeks ago and it really is good. I see in this video alot of snips from the film Empire Records, a sleeper with a great soundtrakc and one of Rene Zellwegers first films. The video just made me smile ear to ear happy that I came of age in the 80s. God it was fun. You know how people are sometimes born in the wrong decade? I feel that about Blake . . .I think he’s like 26 or 27 but I sort of wish he was 42 so that he could have experienced it first hand . . .its amazing how he gets it. Then again, I have a feeling some Gen X’ ers were involved with the making of this video. Great video. Really fun album. Thanks MJ!

  • JOJOSIE

Not a big Blake fan, in fact season 6 was a washout for me, but I really love this video and it sells the song IMO. Good for Blake, hope it pushes his career.

  • JJ123

Same for me….never really paid attention to Blake but this video is awesome and it does sell the song! I’ve seen every movie shown at least 10 times each. I hope this gives him a hit!

  • BootStar

Wow, that was FUN! And I like the song too.

I really like Blake’s new album!
This video pays even more homage to the obvious ’80s flavor of the song.
Note to self: Now I REALLY have to see these movies! I have seen them in bits & pieces often enough, but never from beginning to end. Netflix, here I come!

Cute video, but it really seems more like something you’d see an amatuer on YouTube slap together. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a professional music video consisting entirely of old movie clips before.

I’m a bit surprised that this is one of your favorite AI songs evah, MJ, simply because I read your comment where you listed your favorite musical genres, and I don’t recall dance music being among them. I could be mstaken of course.

Can’t say I quite share your enthusiasm for this track, but I am among those who feel Audio Daydreem is one of the best Idol albums evah

  • hypertwink

    This is awesome.

Yesterday saw Blake’s CD and the cover art is pretty good. I thought it was classy and attractive. It caught my eye, made me look twice. I had no idea it was Blake Lewis’s CD until I got closer and read the name. Maybe it will help sell the CD.

  • idolwatcher

Loved seeing the clips of the movies – who could forget Duckie in Pretty in Pink? Also saw a snippet of one of my other favorites – High Fidelity with Jack Black and John Cusack.

  • mgk

Is this really the video for the song? It seems like it would be hard/expensive to get permission to use all these different movies for a video.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

I really like this, I have listened to this and others on here. Was in Wal-Mart the other day and went to find his cd to buy it but could not find it? Guess I will try another store

  • smartcookie

I love the song and the video, and I wasn’t into 80s dance music even in the 80s, so… I do love Spinal Tap and High Fidelity, though. And I admit to a fondness for Psychelic Furs back in the day, and maybe they were more dancey than I realized at the time.

  • sma11ie

This is a great idea for the video. From what I’ve heard, this record seems loads better than the last.

It seems like it would be hard/expensive to get permission to use all these different movies for a video.

I wonder about that too. At first, I thought what a great idea to save some bucks on shooting a vid, but I bet they had to pay for permission to use those movie clips, right? I’m guessing that’s still cheaper than hiring a director, film crew, extras, etc. etc. Now… why can’t they release a DC single, and piece together some live tour footage for a vid…? We know they shot some. Heh. Still dreaming…

  • WhisperFair

What a great song and fun video; makes me feel 20 years younger. (-: Maybe I should make it my morning wake up song.

  • JJ123

So I’m trying to figure out if I got all the movies….

    Pretty In Pink
    Empire Records
    Fast Times At Ridgemont High
    High Fidelity
    Airheads
    This Is Spinal Tap

    Am I missing any?

I actually knew nothing about Blake except for what I’ve been reading here at MJs for the past couple months. I played snippets on iTunes of his Heartbreak on Vinyl album and I have to say, it sounds great! I may just be buying it…

How does it compare to his first album? I haven’t checked that one out.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com rowenaaine

Uh, why does it say “You may click on your name and/or comment to edit” in my actual post??? LOL

  • http://www.idolbored.com OCCali

This is not the OFFICIAL video. This is a viral video created by a fan I am told.

  • holeighannie

Gah, I have such an unhealthy love for Empire Records, haha. I would marry A.J. tomorrow!

I liked this song when I first heard it, but pairing it with those clips reeaallly made me like it. This could be a very smart move on Blake’s part!

  • http://www.idolbored.com OCCali

Yes I am a Blaker Girl but I’m telling you Heartbreak on Vinyl is a fantastic album and if you grab a copy you will not be sorry…

  • druzilla

Should’ve been the lead single. Love the song.

OCCali, this is what the writer for the N.Y. Post wrote:

When asked if PopWrap wanted to premiere his music video for Blake’s latest single (also called “Heartbreak on Vinyl”), I have to admit I did hesitate a little.

Unless someone was playing a prank on him, it sound “official” to me.

Well… I was told it wasn’t directly from the VP of TommyBoy. It’s a great video either way! Enjoy!

  • http://twitter.com/glamtwinkle twinkle

me too holeighannie! i could watch that movie over and over again. the breakfast club of the 90′s i always say. the soundtrack is FANTASTIC and so may good lines too.

“well sinead o’rebellion shock me shock me shock me with your deviant behavior” “what’s with today, today?” “it’s REX MANNING DAY!”

  • erinnthered

I totally agree with you about this song, mj. Love, love, love it!

I think OCCali might be right if only because the rights to all of those clips would be a pretty penny. The status of John Hughes’ estate not withstanding.

Only one complaint…needs more Some Kind of Wonderful.

  • wjmtv

    Two words: fan tastic.

    Thanks Blake!

  • Barbariba

Official or not, I think it’s a great video and a great song.
    Way to go Blake!

  • chicksineggz

Looooove this song. It’s one of my all time favorite songs released by an Idol as well! And I finally bought Heartbreak on Vinyl, the album. (: I love it. And I almost completely lost faith in Blake after his first album xD But he’s just pulled me back in.

I love how I’m finally getting good music from my favorite S6 idols this year.

  • beesims

Love this! I think I am downloading my first Blake Lewis song.

  • TwigLA

This is a good song from Blake and one that I’d listen on replay. The rest of his album, I wasn’t very into. I like the concept of this one and the throwback quality.

Now the video, I don’t know if it’s fan made or official, but it’s all sorts of fun. It’s obviously good advertising for all those movies.

Now I’m having trouble quenching a desire to go visit Amoeba Records on Sunset.

  • HermeticallySealed

Enjoyed the video, though glad it was a fan one. Too bad Heartbreak wasn’t the first single from the album.

  • sunchick

Like totally like OMG awesome! :D

  • dhunken

This is a fantastic song and a great video….I think Blake may finally break into main stream. I love the song Heartbreak and Vinyl….

  • alwaysintrouble

very cool song and awesome video

  • happycat14

rowenaaine, I highly recommend Heartbreak on Vinyl. I bought ADD and, aside from a couple of ballads like “1000 Miles” and “End of the World,” didn’t listen to it much. So I hesitated, but got the whole Heartbreak album, based on the title single since I thought it was great (didn’t like “Sad Song” that much) and it’s totally worth it. The whole album is pop, dance, 80s, Brit-pop, and yet more in line with today than what Blake was trying with ADD.

Also interesting is that in an interview, Blake said that he writes the beats first, and then lyrics later. This song sounds very organic, and the lyrics tell a great story – the fact that he worked in “analog” in there is genius. Another great song on there is “Love or Torture” that Ryan Tedder co-wrote (leftover track from ADD but I think spruced up production) and “Binary Love.” I really respect Blake’s musical ability, and his voice is lovely on this album.

  • HappyDaisy

I think I’ve posted on all the recent Blake Lewis threads so why stop now.

    1. Love Heartbreak on Vinyl, the single and the album.

    2. A pleasant surprise for me as I was not previously a Blake fan and do not have his first album.

    3. Haven’t decided on my favorite song on the album since I like all but one.

    4. Heartbreak on Vinyl, the song and the album, are fun, fun, fun!

    The End.

Really like this song and what a fun video. Even if it is fan made, it’s good. I hope this gets more people interested in Blake’s album.

  • http://www.idolbored.com OCCali

    From Blake’s Twitter:
Reply @heatherberg I didn’t make it. Some fan did. Its sweet!

Reply @TweetPlaid no. Some fan made it. Trying to find out who

    http://twitter.com/BlakeLewis

I would never post something if I wasn’t 100% sure about it. It’s a fan video.

  • jaimej40

I am big fan of Blake’s music. Love the song and the video no matter who made it.

  • Fabulosity

I don’t think it’s the best song by an idol ever, but it is a throw back to the 80′s. It is very much Blake. It won’t it top 40 but I can see it make it on the dance hit charts. I do like it.
