Never got Blake…still don’t get Blake!

  • mmb

what in the world is he wearing??!!??? Get thee to a stylist (both for clothes and hair) stat!

  • weareallinnocent

what in the world is he wearing??!!???

    Sgt Pepper!

    LOL Yikes~

ETA: I do like the song, though. :-)

  • DivaE

I really liked Blake on AI, and I quite like his first album and didn’t understand why they didn’t push “Know My Name” to radio more. Unfortunately, I hated this performance- it was out of tune and lack-luster and self-indulgent. Like he hadn’t practiced what he was going to do when he got out there- the vocals were too loud and the backing track too soft- me no likey.

  • Southern Breeze

Horrible performance. His voice is weak..has no range.

  • http://www.thriftysisters.ecrater.com tammyinohio

Couldn’t stand Blake then and still can’t stand him!! His look is like a cross between Flock of Seagulls meets my high school’s marching band 20yrs ago except he sounds much much worse.

  • LindaT

Hmm, I kind of like the song, but this performance of it is not great. I agree with DivaE — the balance between the live vocal and the backing track was way off.

And the outfit? Yikes! Something out of the “Michael Jackson Collection”?

  • terps

winning ever since… what the hell was that guy smokin

  • IdolThoughts

Oy…the sunglasses. Yeah…I’m feeling the sweater vest over Sargent Pepper. Ouch…he’s been winning ever since huh? Not so much.
I like the song, but the back track wasn’t loud enough to cover up the flubbed notes and altogether limited vocal range. Bummed. I would actually like to see him do well. I think he’s one of those people that gets in his own way.

  • ryo

I missed his season and have listened to his last couple of songs posted here…I’m not very impressed. Didn’t he end up finishing second? Was the rest of his season that bad?

  • lulwut

Funny, the other day I listened to some ADD songs again and still like some ‘I got u” “what cha got to lose?” I am sorry that Blake’s doucheness lost me as a fan. I need my idol artists to be nice people, after all. It’s not all about music.

  • movin2thabeet

Ouch. That performance was rough. There could be a number of different reasons why. The label could be throwing him out on a shoestring budget with minimal support – audio and otherwise. Or this could be a case of overconfidence and not enough preparation. Or this studio just royally screwed up the sound. I don’t have a problem with Blake’s outfit or his haircut as much as the very off mix which unfortunately spotlighted the few sour notes. Could very well be a combination of factors that led to this spotty performance.

Well, we can only hope that it gets better for Blake from here on out.

Sounds like a decent enough song and I very much appreciate the song’s sentiment.

ETA: This was the year of Sanjaya and Haley. But we also had the great Melinda Dolittle who many critics and fans thought might win it all. She came in third. This season also had Lakisha Jones, Phil Stacey, Chris Richardson, Gina Glocksen, Brandon Rogers and Chris Sligh who all have gone on to at least some success.

  • ryo

This was the year of Sanjaya and Haley. But we also had the great Melinda Dolittle

Thanks! The only thing I remember about Sanjaya though was seeing pictures of his crazy hair. I don’t remember hearing about Haley at all. And I’ve heard Melinda was one of those contestants who should have made it way farther than she did? Is that right?

Either way Blake isn’t making much of an impact on me even if I try.

  • chicksineggz

    WTF is he wearing. O_O
I actually really like Blake. He’s the reason I started watching Idol.
But I’ve lost interest in him since S6 was over.

Still like him better than Jordin though…

  • sue

I love Blake’s first album A.D.D, but I don’t know about this one. It has a similar sound. I might just get it anyway. This performance was rough but I am sure he will get better when he performs it more. I totally understand the meaning of it. I was really sad when The Record Rack closed down in Houston several years ago when I lived there. I loved that store. This would be a great dance remix. This song is still really 80′s. I hope he infused a more modern feel to the rest of the album. Even Depeche Mode’s new single “Wrong” is a lot edgier. Good luck to Blake, I did love him on AI.

  • GeminiDolly

Season 6 had the worst talent Evah!!!!

  • Tess

Season 6 had the worst talent Evah!!!!

I don’t think the talent was so bad….but the personality factor wasn’t much to enjoy. Melinda had and has one of the best voices, ever, on AI but she has the personality of a wet blanket…she makes Carrie look like the life of the party ten times over. There was a lot of “anger” issues that year…the contestants had a knack of saying things that could and were construed as being pretty self-serving.

I love Jordin but I think she “won” because she was the most “level” in a year full of interesting but ultimately boring personalities.

  • mmb

I think season 6 was probably the weakest of all the seasons. Melinda had a terrific voice and great musical interpretation skills, but lacked that “star” quality….nevertheless, she will -and is – having a nice singing career. I’m sure she enjoys being a headliner (even in small venues) more than a backup singer….i never got into blake at all….the rest were unmemorable and Jordin (who i liked) imho won by default..

  • suebrody

I liked his sweater vest. :( The song was This is My Now–at the time, the worst one, b/f NoBo–and that is part of what sank him (b/c I liked him a lot, but it’s true that Jordin is a better vocalist, although *zzzzz).

Anyway, yeah, that Sgt Pepper outfit is embarrassingly ridiculous. Lose it ASAP, Blake.

And god, is he out of tune here…and it’s not a very exciting song. I thought he was going really electro and beatbox, but I guess not. Sadness. I liked him and Melinda (who should have won, IMO), Phil and Chris (he’s very cute, gotta say) were okay, and I did not like the others (do not get me started on the awfulness that was Sanjaya). Sucky season, and the first one I watched all the way through (tho I watched much of S5).

    Well, then…back to S8.

  • riaspark17

Lol I was also wondering if that was the coat he wore during the Idol finale his season…..yes I was a big Blake fan back in the day. It makes me kinda sad I could care less about him now. And even sadder that he pulled that coat out of his wardrobe for this interview.

  • Matt

I liked Blake on Idol and was one of the few that enjoyed his album. It was full of catchy 80′s dance tunes, which is kinda my thing. His label didn’t really give two shits about him though and was evident by that terrible-excuse for a music video they released for him (which is probably the most low-budget-looking music video I’ve ever seen for a major-label artist) and the lack of pushing his singles.

Though I do think he is the epitome of a douchebag for some of the things he’s said post-Idol, I do wish him well. He’s an extremely talented musician.

  • leome

Season 6 was really weak and I think it did some damage on the show. Season 7 was able to pick up something… but still.
Blake is probably the worst vocalist of all the number 2s, but him coming second in that season is not surprising. He was able to make a bland season a bit more exciting. I don’t care for him, or his vocals, and I’m not much of a fan of his music… but for me AI is entertainment first, and Blake brought something original during that season and being a TV show, I think that was important, cause he made it more interesting.
I think he has some musical talent, although I expected a bit more for this second album. This single doesn’t show anything different, maybe the rest of the songs will.

  • madmike2276

    Wow….just wow.
That was rough. HOWEVER, in his defense, I’ve seen other AI contestants on Good Day New York, who were far more talented vocally thank Blake, who sounded terrible. It seems that the set is not equipped for performances because the vocals always seem overdone, with an echo. I remember Paris Bennet having what I felt was a disaterous performance when her album came out. I don’t know.

If this is the main NYC/NJ area promos for the album, he’s in deep trouble.

  • Chai

Blake is the beginning of the show’s transition to offering more non-traditional, counter-culture singer contestants like Danny Noriega, Jason Castro, Megan Joy, Mishavonna Henson, Felicia Barton and Adam Lambert. You could say Blake led to Adam.

  • Suzanne

Oh, poor Blake. Was there a problem with the microphone or the way he was handling it? If his mouth was more than an inch from the mic, he was almost inaudible.

The 80s dance beat–no. That outfit–no. The hair–super no. He used to be cute; what happened?

I like his voice–it’s a comforting, easy-to-listen-to voice. And the idea of the song is a really good one. The death of hard disc. I feel super sad about that. And I got nothing out of this song. It needed a cool hook–like “video killed the radio star”–but I didn’t get anything like that from this. (But I didn’t listen very well either b/c my mind wandered).

    Man–he really looks like crap.

Yep, it sure sounded like there was a problem with the mic. There were times when his mouth was saying oh-oh-oh, but nothing was audible.

If this album doesn’t catch on, I definitely think he should move behind the sound board. That is the kind of song that is selling big for others right now, and I’ll bet he would have success as a song writer/producer.

I agree, and I’ll always respect Blake for pushing Idol’s boundaries. Hmmm, I must like the “out there” contestants because my favs have been, by season: Blake, Jason, Adam.

  • hollygo9

Ah Blake. Idolotry is fleeting for some, isn’t it?

  • Barbariba

I’m a fan of Blake, loved ADD and really do like Sad Song. If he gets the proper support from Tommy Boy, and I believe he will, then I think the single will do very well. Anyone interested in street teaming can go to http://forums.idolbored.com/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=65 and sign up.

  • Cindyy

I love this song. I mean, the performance was a little rough, but give him a break… it was early when he filmed this. Look up the song on itunes to hear it recorded. Don’t just judge it by one performance.

I think his second album will be really good.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I agree, and I’ll always respect Blake for pushing Idol’s boundaries. Hmmm, I must like the ‘out there’ contestants because my favs have been, by season: Blake, Jason, Adam.

We have similar tastes. I’ll add Bo Bice and Allison to that list.

As for the interview, I finally watched (couldn’t at work). From the comments here, I thought he said something douchey like being the “real winner.” LOL. Glad that turned out not to be the case. Oh, and “This is My Now” was my least fave Blake performance, too. ;-)

Blake does have some mad skillz. I would also note that he’s the most original song re-arranger the show has had, since he didn’t depend on other people’s covers (which almost everyone who did obscure covers before or since has). I wish him well. I downloaded the tune and I like it. I don’t love it. I kind of wanted something that sounded a bit different from ADD, although I loved about 2/3 of ADD. I’m looking forward to the rest of the album.

Yes, sad about the record stores. I feel sadder for the small indie ones than Virgin or Tower, though.

I am just getting introduced to past American Idol talents. Did not watch Season 1-6 .
I have a very short memory for American Idol shows . My recollection of Season 7 is mostly the screams of our 9 year old over Archuleta.
Season 8 was another story. Woe unto those who gazed upon Adam Lambert .Tis the blight of all concentration.

Blake seems nice but his song seem like something he should have done two years ago. Did his initial album top the charts ? Is this single now the follow up of that first album ?

Yeah the costume is atrocious. Isn’t 19E representing him now ? No more stylist from 19E?

  • poporange

I watched the video and don’t think the place he preformed was made for music at all.I sort of liked the song and think is the best mixer that ever was on AI .I like him because unlike the same old v bread same old on idol I want something different…BTW was not enthralled with with some vocals og pop Idols on this blog.

  • Lu

His hair? Just no. His outfit? Just no. His song? Not sure. I wasn’t impressed with this performance but I’ll give him a pass because of the possible bad venue. I’ll give his second cd a chance. Did not really care for the first. I used to think Blake was kinda cute but not anymore. His rooster hairdo is downright distracting.

  • hwc

    He’s on drugs, right?

  • JudyOhio

Words fail me on this one…………… :thumbdown_tb:

  • druzilla

Liked him on Idol 6 and he had a good, if not commercial successful, post Idol album. I thought when he sucked on “Break Anotha” live it was because he hates the song. After seeing this? I dunno. The Sergeant Pepper outfit is just awful, he’s looking bloated. I don’t mind the hair so much. I like this song but if this had been my introduction to it, I’d have just rolled my eyes. He MUST work on his live performances of album songs. It’s bizarre because it was fairly innovative and charismatic on the Idol stage when not handling the craptastic coronation song out of his range.

  • readon

I never watched an entire show of AI until season 8. I would tune in the last ten or fifthteen minutes because “House” ran right after AI. Blake is the reason I did not watch any more than that. I tuned in and so him and his beat boxing and saw a few of Jordin’s performances. I thought that Blake was atrocious and Jordin was ho-hum. This performance — I’m speechless.

  • lefil

I thought he was signed by RCA records? Why didn’t they support him?

  • http://www.votefortheworst.com Mysterioso

His microphone is plugged directly into that stupid box he trots around with him to push buttons and make stupid noises.

He killed his career with this one performance. I can’t see him ever recovering from this debacle. He is just a joke now.

  • Studio57

Holy 80′s Batman! That sucked. Worst year of idol ever. Too bad Chris Sligh picked sucky songs that year because that guy had a wonderful voice and some really cool pre-idol songs. Good to see though that he is succeeding post AI.

  • Duke

That really was a sad, sad song. yikes, blake.

  • cmheart

Music aside. If he just got his look and image together more, people might take him more seriously. He looks like crap with that skunk hair/awful cut and ridiculous outfit.

  • Sherena

The performance wasn’t that bad. I thought it would be terrible, after reading the comments–I actually didn’t dare to play the performance for a while. But it was okay.

  • wonderwhy

Blake is as creative and unconventional as ever, and I like him for that.

  • Niall

Man that was bad. I definitely pinpoint Blake as the trendsetter for rearranging songs on AI but I can’t believe he let his opportunity slip by. He’s going to need to perform much better during his few tv appearances than he did in this performance. He’s lost his looks so he’d better start bringing the good performances.

BTW, whatever happened to TeamPlaid? VFTW posted something about it shutting down from lack of traffic?
