Blake Lewis Covers White Stripes “7 Nation Army” (VIDEO)

Blake Lewis, the beatboxer who came in 2nd behind Jordin Sparks on Season 6 of American Idol, has released a cover of White Stripes’ “7 Nation Army.” His version employs all the loops and tech wizardry we’ve come to associate with Blake’s music.

He explains how he produced the track below:

Live from The Playhouse – aka Elliott’s pad. This was done in one take at 2am in the morning. Nick came over, set up some lights, a projector and mapped out the room. He designed the visuals on the spot in Aftereffects and I worked on the loop arrangement. Once we had something that connected we started to film. Doing this live with the visuals was tricky. My timing of the arrangement had to flow smoothly and I couldn’t move around a lot and if you know me well, that is really tough.

This is just the first video of many. My goal for 2014 is to film 2 songs a month. An original song and a looped cover. Please subscribe and share. Thanks for watching! – BL

At one point, Blake announced he had a record deal and was set to release an album in spring 2013. It sounds like he’s on his own at this point. Good luck to him. I always liked his style.

    Love it. One take. Geez.

Wish Blake’s talent and work ethic were better rewarded, but like so many other Idols his career illustrates how tough and kinda irrational the music business is.

Nice that he and Elliott have become bffs over the past few years. Together, though, they’re a massive pile of underappreciated talent, I must say.

I so wish these Idol alumni stopped doing cover songs…..dude, you’re a songwriter, come on…

Let A = number of people searching Youtube for Blake Lewis.

Let B = number of people searching Youtube for “White Stripes” or 7NA.

    B>A for all real numbers.

Recording covers is a promotional technique to get attention so that fans of the act-being-covered say “whoo hoo! this guy does neat stuff! let’s check out his other covers! and OMG original songs!”

Lewis did say half his planned recordings would be originals, so it’s pretty clear he’s onto this strategy.

    Anyway, that was cool.

    I never thought about that.

didn’t watch his season… seen bits of his stuff on the show and post the show online… he’s obviously very creative… maybe he’s someone who will have more success as a producer/DJ…

Team Plaid 4evah!!111!! Seriously, that was awesome, especially for one take. Nice song choice too. Maybe he’ll get lucky and one of these videos will go viral. Weirder things have happened. Hope the best for him. Sometimes independent is better. :-)

His last album was really good. I don’t get it, I know it didn’t sell that much, but it did have a #1 dance song hit on it- you would think that would be enough to at least get him to the next stage. He’s looking bad again, I hope he is not overeating, he had lost all that weight and looked good- it looks like he has put it back on. He has a lot of talent, I hope he gets the chance to shine again, some of his songs are really great.

Compared to what makes it big today, Blake has so much talent! Did HE work with Todrick Hall on something?
