I.B. BAD SPECIAL EDITION: SINGLES GOING STEADY

With its eight #1 singles, is Katy Perry’s 2010 album Teenage Dream changing the business model for big-time pop acts? How many smash
singles can a major pop artist have during an album cycle? Is the prevalent strategy that says you need to go away after three or four hit singles outmoded?
Perry’s remarkable run proves that audience fatigue is no longer an
issue, provided the consumer appetite for the artist’s music remains
    voracious.

Perry isn’t the only pop star to successfully buck the conventional wisdom; look at the number of pop smashes Lady Gaga, Rihanna and David Guetta have had over a short period of time as well.

One Direction – The Fastest Selling Pre-Order Single In History

Phenomenal Overnight Sales For One Direction

Single Pre-Order Hits No.1 in 40 Countries – The Fastest Selling Pre-Order Single In History

    One
Direction have reached No.1 in an amazing 40 countries worldwide with
the pre-order EP for their brand new single ‘Live While We’re Young’,
making it the fastest selling pre-order single in history.

    The
single was released via pre-order on iTunes at midnight last night and
immediately hit No.1 in 40 countries including the UK, New Zealand,
Australia, Italy, Spain, France, Singapore, Brazil and Mexico.

The biggest group in the world will release their hugely anticipated brand new single ‘Live While We’re Young’ on 30th September in the UK and 1st October in the USA and Canada.

    ‘Live
While We’re Young’ sees the global superstars once again teaming up
with songwriters Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub & Carl Falk and the
result is unmistakeably One Direction. ‘Live While We’re Young’ is pop
perfection – an immediate, energy packed song mixing rock undertones
with smooth harmonies, about living for the moment.

    The
eagerly awaited second album is due for release in November 2012 and
sees One Direction collaborating with a whole host of first class
writers and producers. As well as reuniting with the likes of Rami
Yacoub & Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha, Ed Sheeran and McFly’s Tom
Fletcher, the album features input from Dr Luke, Shellback and Toby Gad.
The album is sure to be another huge smash release from a truly
    international pop phenomenon.

    It’s
been little short of an incredible year for Niall Horan, Zayn Malik,
Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. Formed on the 2010 series
of The X Factor, they released their Number 1 sensation debut single
‘What Makes You Beautiful’ in September 2011 and haven’t looked back
since. 1D Mania has swept the globe, with acres of news print being
covered and the band selling a massive 12 MILLION records worldwide.

    Their
debut album ‘Up All Night’ has to date reached No.1 in 17 countries –
becoming the first UK band to debut at No.1 on the US Billboard chart
with their first album. They’ve sold out tours across the UK, USA,
Australia and New Zealand, alongside New York’s Madison Square Garden
along the way. One Direction’s live dvd has also been an amazing
success, reaching No.1 in 27 different countries.

    In
Spring 2013 One Direction will begin their sold out World Tour in the
UK which includes a massive nine shows at London’s O2 Arena.

Nice for the boys, nice for Simon and, apparently, nice for all the tweenie girls who seem to adore them.  Doesn’t make the group better than anyone else, though.  They haven’t “won” a prestige’s award and they are posting numbers for a relatively new medium that will be broken sooner rather than later.

I am sure that fans of the group are impressed with their success, and rightly so, but having lived through countless decades of tween idols I am pretty damn sure that in a few years they will be relegated to being “the boy band that was”.

As I always say the measure of greatness takes years to measure.  If they can stay on billboard’s top 100 chart for 750 weeks then they have made it in my eyes.  That is still the record to break in my opinion.  And the group that did it still shows up on the top 200 charts with albums recorded almost 30 years ago.

  • girlygirltoo

Good for 1D. I hope for the sake of all the people who pre-ordered it that it is at least a decent song.

  • girlygirltoo

Looks like Dark Side may have peaked. Has there been any word on what the 4th single off this album will be?

  • Kitwana

Tess, I am absolutely fascinated by the rise and fall of teen idols. They can be hotter than the sun one minute – selling out CDs, concerts and all manner of merchandise – and then suddenly fall off a cliff, see Jonas Brothers circa 2010. Appearance wise, they have not changed that much so it can’t just be the girls’ hormones. So what is it?

I know others disagree but I still think Justin Bieber’s days as a teen idol are numbered. If he wants to pull a Justin Timberlake, he’s gotta sex it up quick and appeal to the 20+ ladies while he still has the public spotlight on him. I doubt he’ll ever be able to wn them over on his talent alone.

  • dd999

Looking at the stats for Scotty on Billboard and Country charts!  Nice!!  I think of one convert, who recently  attended Scotty’s concert, and in his review said of Scotty, “he’s polished, professional and powerful with a signature bass voice”!! And added his future looks incredibly bright!!! I think so too!!!

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

I know others disagree but I still think Justin Bieber’s days as a teen
idol are numbered. If he wants to pull a Justin Timberlake, he’s gotta

Bieber is short and looks younger than his age still. He’s going to have a hard time appealing to twentysomething women like Timberlake did regardless of what kind of music he releases.

  • elliegrll

I don’t think that there are any signs that Justin is in any trouble.  His current album is selling very well, and at a faster pace than One Direction’s did.  His first single off of the album was his first song to reach the top ten on the pop charts.  He sold out his current tour in record time, and he sells out tours outside of the US.

He has some great people running his career, and they made the right decision when they gave him songs like “As Long As You Love Me.”  That song is a big change for him, it’s not teen pop, but it’s still a song that will appeal to his fans, while at the same time introducing to him to more adults, but not make him look like he’s in his 40s.

As Long As You Love Me is currently #13 on the pop charts, with a bullet of 1193 (and we get happy if an idol alum has a bullet that’s in around 20).  The song is also selling very well, it’s currently #7 on Itunes, and I don’t think it’s been out of the top ten since it was released.  That’s also different for Justin.  His singles sell incredibly well, but they don’t usually show this type of longevity. The same goes for the chart success of As Long as You Love Me and to a lesser extent Boyfriend. Usually Justin’s songs race up the charts very fast, peak at around top 15 or 20, and then fall very fast, but that’s not happening with this song. It’s a great sign that PDs are treating him like a serious pop artist, and not just someone whose music appeals to the Disney crowd.

David Archuleta, still surprised that his name is on these charts.  I believe that if there were physical copies of BEGIN. at the box stores consistently the sales would be higher.  I had a conversation with a Walmart sales associate asking why some stores where caring various copies while others none, my local store has had none the two times I’ve been there.  He said they’re getting two at a time but sell right away so they order a couple more, what?!  I asked if they’re selling right away why aren’t several being ordered instead.  Didn’t have an answer.

In the meantime my google alerts have gone insane with the Everybody Hurts MV.  Poland, Germany, UK, Spain, Austrialia, France, Japan, almost all countries in Asia and Latin and South America.  Here in the states several radio stations have them on their websites, hiphop blogs, Christian blogs, I’m truly enjoying myself watching all the buzz :)

“The young American singer David Archuleta (David Archuleta) released a video on the cover of the famous song REM “Everybody Hurts”. Option David very lyrical, and the video was very good and the beautiful.”

In terms of technicality, yes he is still currently relevant to music but I think he got a tad too overexposed in 2010-2011 and “Bieber Fever” kinda died down. He hit puberty since then, to a degree.. He still looks, acts, and sounds 16. I think teen girls are slowly beginning to move on and only Justin’s die-hard fans (who will surely get bored with him at some point) are keeping him afloat with the “teen factor” appeal, since 1D came in and ate his lunch in that department. That department, per se, has nothing to do with music at all, and consists of tweeting, putting posters up, stalking their every move. His albums sales are still a large number, but I think his status as a “music star” will gradually begin to die after this album cycle. He can stay in the spotlight but I don’t see him surviving like Britney did as a real “celebrity”. Just my thoughts.

Bieber fever may have died, even though his ticket sales wouldn’t indicate that, but even if it has, it’s being replaced with someone who looks like a legitimate artist, and not just a teen popstar.

You say that his hardcore fans are keeping him afloat, but his album and single sales wouldn’t indicate this, and neither would his song’s chart positions.  His album came out June 15, which was about 8 or 9 weeks ago, but his album hasn’t fallen out of the top ten yet.

His current single was released about 7 weeks ago, and has been in the top ten on Itunes since then.

Traditional wisdom wold say that his two singles are selling his album.  That hasn’t totally been the case for him in the past, but his chart success with the two singles from this album would indicate that PDs are taking him seriously.

So far, this current album has had songs that have charted higher than any of Justin’s other songs. His debut sales numbers for the album were also higher than the debut numbers for any of his other albums.

Justin Bieber has over 27 MILLION followers on twitter and more than 46 MILLION friends on Facebook. His last album went #1 on itunes in something like 30 countries when it was released. “Boyfriend” became his first single to hit the Top 10 on the pop charts. The video for “As Long As You Love Me” on VEVO has more than 30 MILLION views, while the one for “Boyfriend” has more than 133 MILLION views. His concerts sell out in a matter of minutes.

I don’t see any evidence that his career is in any danger. He does have to continue to evolve his image as he gets older, but he is still barely 18 years old — in fact, he is actually younger than every member of 1 Direction. I have a feeling that he will be around well after 1D breaks up.
