  • L. R. M. L.

I think Scotty is making it up there inch by inch. Slow process.

  • Madilo

“Phillip Phillips: As “Gone, Gone, Gone” climbs 43-36,
the singer/songwriter becomes the first “American Idol” champion to
score a pair of top 40 Hot 100 hits from a debut album since David Cook
(“The Time of My Life,” “Light On”) five years ago. Phillips’ prior
breakout single “Home” peaked at No. 6 in January.”

  • vamp111

I’m thinking in the next week or so he could pass Cassadee on the iTunes chart.

  • Madilo

And why do you think so when Cassedee is having more airplay than him ?

  • vamp111

She is continuing to fall down the iTunes chart while he is catching up. Plus, the airplay isn’t significantly bigger. Its not getting so much airplay that its impossible to pass her in sales for that week.

  • Madilo

    I don’t think so

  • Hannibal S

Whatever happened to David Cook? Don’t hear much about him anymore. Phillip seems to be working on a solid little career.

  • Karen C

David Cook is working on his third album, he went on Idol to perform a new single Laying Me Low. He is working on finishing the album and hasn’t announced how he is releasing it but will possibly be independantly. He just had a contest for the official lyric video, the winner is here :
    http://vevo.ly/10ahCwc.

  • vamp111

That’s fine, but it doesn’t change the fact that he is rising on iTunes and she is falling.

  • Hannibal S

How is the single doing? I don’t think I’ve ever heard it on radio. 3rd album? When did the 2nd one release? I remember hoopla around his debut, then nothing. I thought he’d be on Kelly/Carie level by now.

  • wordnerdarchie

Since he’s Indie, he doesn’t have a label pushing Laying Me Low to radio which explains why you haven’t heard it there. It is being played on the radio in Asia and on internet radio stations.

To make this comment on-topic I’ll include the following:
His second album was released June 28, 2011 at #7 on BB200. (If it had been categorized as a Rock Album, it would have been #1 on the Rock Chart that week, but it was listed as Pop. That seemed odd at the time, lol.) I’m not sure why you missed its release. There was a lot of discussion about it here on this blog at the time. He had two singles that charted from that album. (The Last Goodbye – AC (17), HAC (29) and Fade Into Me (HAC 33). He also made available free downloads of We Believe for those who donated to one of the many charities that he supports (I forgot the name of that particular charity). The song is also used by the organization ABC2 that raises funds for research into a cure for brain cancer. Check the song out in this fan made video tribute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W3UHjzfx-U

As to why he’s not at Kelly/Carie level….. the music business is hard to predict and explain. He appears to prefer a career with a few less spotlights and a lot more privacy so it seems to be working for him.

  • Karen C

I don’t think it’s really been on the radio except for kcradio.com, which is an internet radio station from Kansas City. He is doing a show at a different station next week, from Kansas, so maybe it’s the start of more promotion.
The second album was released 2 years ago yesterday, and it did get two singles on the radio, though they didn’t chart that high. The album did debut on the charts at #7, but didn’t sell as much as the first, and he did do a tour for it.
I’m hopeful that the album does really well, and glad he’s happier now.

  • Karen C

I agree and think it would have done much better if it had been categorized as rock or alternative, especially with the way pop was two years ago. I think the best songs on the album were Circadian and REM, and Paper Heart and those would have fit much better in rock. Still amazed at what he did on that album even two years later.

  • Incipit

“When did the 2nd one release?”

Hannibal S, looks like you missed the whole second era – The second RCA album, This Loud Morning, dropped two years ago, 6/28/11. Yesterday was the Anniversary.

If you want to catch up – mj has all the coverage, just click on the “Contestants” pull down in the header and then click on ‘David Cook’ for the news items. Since you never heard the album, I wouldn’t comment, you can make up your own mind about that.

The song Karen C linked, “Laying Me Low” is from the music DC has written for the third era – and IDK how he plans to release it…but without a really good song pusher, some heavy duty Not Payola, or an Indie deal, it may be hard to find on terrestrial radio. OTOH – Internet radio and all of southeast Asia have been playing it since early May, when it was debuted on Idol, and it is doing very well on their radio stations.

IDK if and/or when the trend for guitar driven rock music will be in the US radio cycle again, but there are experts who seem to think it’s coming around – *shrug* I listen to what I like, not what the PD’s tell me I should like.

Check it out, see what you think?

  • Lexie O’Neill

Good Lord. What happened with Scotty overnight? If he’d gotten one spin for every radio station that tweeted about the Duck Dynasty story yesterday, the results should have been the opposite? Aargh…

  • jpfan2

GGG will enter the top 30 on POP fairly quickly but then things will get tougher. It looks stalled on HAC with Mirrors losing spins but GGG standing still so it can’t pass it. Enter the top 10 on AC so that’s a good thing. ;0

  • jpfan2

Scotty’s single looks stalled on country. CP isn’t moving much either in terms of audience and I don’t see Lauren’s single so I guess it’s out of the top 50.

  • girlygirl

Radio stations post stories about artists they don’t play all the time. If radio actually played the ex-Idols they talked about on their websites, a lot more of them would have had more huge radio hits. :)

  • ptebwwong

The country genre is a slow chart if you’re not an A list artist. Some artists take 6-9 months to make it into the top 10. There’s songs recently that took about 11 months to get to #1.

So I think it’s too soon to tell that any of their singles are doing bad right now or won’t become hits.

BTW, Lauren’s song just this week made #60 on Billboard. I’m not sure where she is on Mediabase.

  • iani

Since he’s Indie, he doesn’t have a label pushing Laying Me Low to radio which explains why you haven’t heard it there.

I would like to say something here that I’ve noticed some days ago maybe old news for chart-watchers and music lovers, but new for me. Immediately my mind went to AI music and its chances on radio specially when we expect soon music from different reality shows acts. First, what I saw is that DC’s former tour partner and RCA artist Gavin DeGraw has a new single on HAC, in 3 days already at 44 with some parts of 100% Mumford and Sons instrumentation copycat, a folk, stomping driven song; no words about the album, from an interview maybe sometimes at the end of year but a single is already out there to take advantage of the “still on” trendy style of music.
The second I’ve noticed, for Alt, AAA formats the PDs/DJs are not as supportive for the unsigned indie acts as they used to be, you can do
indie music but a strong label would be much better, maybe for ” to be paid” better too. A new act charting on Alt, AAA is a 16 year old girl known as Lorden (thinking of the teenagers of the reality shows), another one with a Bob Dylan flavor staring to chart is the 19 year-old Jake Bugg, interesting to see how far they go with their careers. The Neighborhood is #1 on Alt, some surf-guys from CA with 100% indie, Alt sound singed with Columbia. I don’t know what chance DC would have had on Alt, AAA 2 years ago with some of TLM songs, that I know is his music has to be supported by a label to be heard. Hope for some good news from him.

  • jayidrocks

Reaching Top 30 on POP would be good thing and if getting tougher means , he can only climb slowly, is this o.K.
Important is, he can stay a while on the charts , so that the sales stay strong.

The stalling on HAC can be a currently, look at Kelly, after some days with negative spins, she now gets positive updates again.
But if it means, GGG is peaking now, we also can be satisfied, because reaching #3 with a competion of Pink, JT and Maroon5 is great. :)

every Idol is now facing the same fall from grace after the first album…its inevitable.

  • LongKissGoodnight

I was out, have we discussed the fact that GGG had jumped in top 10 (Mediabase) on AC (the third format where this song had went top 3) and generally acting like a hit there, with the biggest bullet currently and such? %))
    Pretty cool.

  • Madilo

It’s cool, i would love for GGG to go #2 on HAC but it’s not happening huh but #3 is great. Maybe the third single will go #1 lol

Do you think GGG can go #1 on AC ?

  • Madilo

omg no i don’t want that for Phillip, crossing my fingers :)

  • LongKissGoodnight

    >> i would love for GGG to go #2 on HAC but it’s not happening

Maybe it won’t, maybe it will. Remember that Home had peaked at #2, started falling and THEN made a rebound to #1.
The Fat Lady might be clearing her throat, but she had not sung yet.

  • Madilo

I hope it goes #1 on AC, but Pink is so powerful lol

  • LongKissGoodnight

I sincerely doubt that AC would take to the top a song from none A-lister that have not had significant amount of POP airplay.
Top 5 would be a safer bet.
To reach #1 on AC GGG would have to earn its stripes on POP first. IMHO

  • Madilo

I just wanted another #1 on another format for GGG but it’s not happening, it’s done on HAC so i hope POP keeps it alive

  • jpfan2

GGG lost 39 spins on HAC and could lose it’s positive bullet by tomorrow so it does look done on HAC. It could reverse course but for now it looks finished.

Maybe GGG had peaked on HAC, but I wouldn´t say , it is done. The song hasn´t lost dozens of spins yet and the AI decreased not so much. Its more like stalling than falling rapidly.
But lets wait for the updates of the next days, then we know it better: :)

  • Madilo

I saw the update before i posted, imo it’s done but i would like to be wrong lol

  • Madilo

It’s done HAC but congrats it had a great run there !!!

BTW good POP update and i see an Atlanta station (#9) in the starters list :)

  • jpfan2

I think 31 is a real possibility and maybe something will go recurrent (not sure about that).

  • Madilo

Yeah #31 is definitely happening and the song that is elligible to go recurrent is below GGG so no position gain :(

  • usedtobelucy

Truer words were never spoken, unfortunately.

  • jpfan2

You’re right. I just checked and saw that.

Emblem3 is getting good updates on POP.

  • Madilo

Yeah like a week now, good for them, i hope they continue to climb :)
They might debut on the Hot 100 this week

  • jpfan2

GGG lost -.567 audience in one day on HAC. Ouch. But at least the other formats are cushioning the blow.

  • Madilo

Too bad ! it’ll have another peak in the Hot 100 this week though but i’m not sure if it can go higher if bigger POP stations don’t add it

  • LongKissGoodnight

It’s very, very… very early in GGG’s run on POP.
How do you know that big stations would not add it when/if it gets to top 20 for example?
I don’t see a reason for pessimism at such an early stage.
So far all the vital signs for this song on POP have been positive.

  • Madilo

I said “if” so it’s a condition lol btw I’m not pessimistic at all

But it’s starting to lose AI on HAC and the POP and AC AI are just a little above the loss on HAC so if bigger stations don’t add it, it’ll not climb on Hot 100 that’s what i meant.

We have a Boston station and now an Atlanta one is starting to spin it and i think a Houston one (#6) is in the horizon so things are looking good :)

  • jayidrocks

We don´t know, if GGG loses so much AI on HAC the next days like today.
If the Overall- AI stay positive, then I think there is some possibility, that the song atleast goes slightly higher in the Top 100.

  • Madilo

That’s why i’m speculating and i said “if” hahaha or you want me to speculate in a positive way hahaha

  • LongKissGoodnight

Even if it has peaked on HAC it’s not like GGG is going to go from 33K AI to zero in a month, AC has a whole lot of audience to give, and the song is climbing there, plus level of AI on pop is proportionally bigger than on any other chart in the country, never mind the growth of sales (and maybe streams?).
Big stations or not, I don’t think it will be done growing on HOT 100 after this week.

  • Madilo

hahaha i just hope it does not drop like Emeli Sande’s song, that’s so brutal huh

As for the rest we’ll see

i wish it could go #10 or even higher if it depended on me lol

  • LongKissGoodnight

I can see where you coming from with this, but the key difference between GGG and Emeli Sande’s song is that last one was climbing on POP and HAC simultaneously, so it had peaked and got dropped by both formats simultaneously. I think GGG decent on HAC is going to be softened by its climb on POP to the certain extend.

  • Madilo

“I think GGG decent on HAC is going to be softened by its climb on POP to the certain extend.”

ah ha ! That’s what i would like to happen but i dread a brutal drop like in Triple A that could overshadow the increase on POP and let’s say AC but if it can go down slowly i would be happy and i hope that happens.

Decent update on CHR for GGG. Do you know if it is eligible to go recurrent on AAA?

Emblem3 continues to move up steadily on CHR chart as well. I saw the single is now in the Top 100 on iTunes.

Expecting 56K for GGG which would put its total to 974K

I don’t think it has 20 weeks on the chart maybe it’ll go recurrent mid july or it can be purged before that date

The sooner he gets that second album out the better! He absolutely can’t wait 2 years.

  • elliegrll

He can, if like Daughtry and Carrie he has multiple hits, and songs that are still getting a lot of airplay two years from now.
