“424. Scotty McCreery – See You Tonight”

Wait! I saw this song was already at top 200 range few weeks ago. I mean Thomas Rhett who arguably doesn’t have a fanbase as big as Scotty released his song around Scotty’s date and his single steadily still at top 100 even before radio spins it. I really thought this is Scotty’s best single to date, it’s catchy summer song and atleast EASILY gonna get Gold. What’s happened? Seems like audience and country fans (not particulary his fans) aren’t responding immediately this song like his material from debut album. Really shame if country fans doesn’t embrace this song.

  • windmills

Thomas Rhett’s song is t30 at country radio (#28 Billboard, #30 Mediabase) so I don’t know where you’re getting that its sales are coming “before radio spins it.” Not only that, the video for Thomas Rhett’s song was released yesterday, which typically produces a spike in download sales.

Scotty’s SYT on the other hand hasn’t made t40 yet. It’s too early to call sales underwhelming, too early to gauge people’s response, too early to wonder what happened.

  • ptebwwong

Most singles on iTunes that are consistently charting high are due to radio airplay. Obviously, some singles will chart high due to their debut week, discounts, tv promotion, etc.

But if you notice most of the top 300 singles on any given week on iTunes, they are mostly top 40 currently or at one point in their genre both on Mediabase & Billboard.

  • lollamape

I’ve been following Thomas Rhett mediabase number and iTunes sales, this is his number before got a huge spike:

    http://kworb.net/radio/country/archives/20130514.html

And this after got a spike :

    http://kworb.net/radio/country/archives/20130515.html

And his itunes number steadily after got a momentum. He didn’t have a huge number of spins (+700) and he didn’t have video, huge promo etc..

I’m just wondering why Scotty didn’t have same momentum when his song was already at top 200 and fell off to top 400.. Just that..

  • Lexie O’Neill

Two things got SYT up in the 200s…Scotty doing a push with retweets/tweets and the Leno performance. Those weren’t long-lasting effects…now, crossing fingers for more radio play.:))

  • windmills

LOL, you do realize that “huge spike” between 5/14 and 5/15 is because 5/15 was the day after ‘It Goes Like This’ got released to Itunes, right?. Thomas Rhett’s on tour with Jason Aldean and his single was already t40 when his single was put on sale so once again, the sales did not come before the single already had a certain amount of airplay.

In the past 5 weeks Thomas Rhett’s single’s climbed steadily into the t30 on the airplay charts and that plus the tour and now the video have helped stabilize sales in the lower end of the t100 at Itunes.

Scotty’s on a slower track at radio, and that’s why his current sales level is slower.

I see you used up all your positivity on Cassadee ;)

  • Lexie O’Neill

Oh, and Scotty is heading out on the road this weekend, 2 radio shows today, Texas tomorrow, taping his video on Thursday.:)

  • vamp111

Scotty’s daily mediabase updates have been great. He keeps growing every day.

  • lollamape

Okay, thanks for the answers. I did just ask, no intention of negativity.

and LOL at threw Cassadee name into this topic like i’m her huge stan and just praising her everytime i post here..I didn’t even mention her name until 1.5 weeks ago. You can check my other posts. thanks..

  • girlygirl

What updates are you referring to? Do you mean the Billboard updates that Windmills posts here every week? Because his single is pretty much stalled on the MB country radio play chart right now — so I wouldn’t say those updates have been great.

  • macfae

    oh, let me count the ways Phillip’s GGG is charting in BB – 1 – 2- 3- 4 -5 – 6
Yay !! Make me happy to see that he is doing so well with it. .

  • vamp111

Well he just jumped from 42 to 38 on the Billboard, and should jump this week on mediabase-a lot of songs are due to go recurrent. Also, ever since the start of the month, it has moved from 408 spins weekly to 520 as of today’s update. We have been tracking on IDF:

    http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=671456&st=10820

    06/01/2013 408 spins #49 mediabase #44 billboard
    06/02/2013 417 spins #48 mediabase #44 billboard
    6/03/2013 420 spins #46 mediabase #44 billboard
    06/04/2013 434 spins #47 mediabase #42 billboard
    06/05/2013 446 spins #47 mediabase #42 billboard
    06/06/2013 451 spins #47 mediabase #42 billboard

    06/08/2013 478 spins #47 mediabase #42 billboard
    06/09/2013 482 spins #47 mediabase #42 billboard
    06/10/2013 485 spins #47 mediabase #38 billboard
    06/11/2013 496 spins #47 mediabase #38 billboard

    06/13/2013 514 spins #47 mediabase #38 billboard
    06/14/2013 520 spins #47 mediabase #38 billboard

Its not growing like the A-listers, but its not doing bad. Several A-listers are preventing the single from moving. Next week’s update should shoot it up MB.

  • vamp111

Woo hoo, Cassadee is dropping :D

  • Madilo

mdrrr why are you happy that she’s dropping ?

  • Madilo

but what Girlygirl said still stand

  • vamp111

Nothing personal, but I am a country music fan and want country to stay country instead of becoming more and more pop.

  • vamp111

Its not growing as quickly as others, but its still growing. It already made the top 40 faster than his last single(WTT) did. This just took 8 weeks, WTT was 15 weeks I believe.

  • windmills

I was making a joking reference to a comment you’d made recently about loving the positive energy in here ;)

I’m glad I was able to clear up for you why we shouldn’t expect Scotty’s SYT to be selling like Thomas Rhett’s single at this time.

  • girlygirl

Where did WTT end up peaking?

  • vamp111

#38, which is where SYT is this week.

  • girlygirl

That’s on Billboard, right? What about on Mediabase?

  • Madilo

    fair enough

  • vamp111

It peaked at #40 at mediabase last August, and was released in March of that year. So it took a little less than 5 months for it to get there. So far, this single is at a MUCH better pace.

  • suenigma

I hardly think Cassadeee Pope having a moderately successful single would be the downfall of country music. LOL. And this is Itunes, not country radio.

  • Trina

Right, because shes the reason country has been more pop oriented for years.

  • renzy24

    POP Mediabase.
    53 49 JESSICA SANCHEZ Tonight f/Ne-Yo 393 363 30 1.3396, hope this will continue. :)

  • Madilo

I’m afraid she’ll be kicked out again, the gap between her and the #48 song is so big and her spin gain is (+6 today) is not that much.

  • Anny_nanny

    I love AC! LOL
    8 = PHILLIP PHILLIPS Home 1477 +17
    12 = PHILLIP PHILLIPS Gone, Gone, Gone 671 +19

  • LongKissGoodnight

You know I have checked around, and curiously enough at this point GGG (#4 on HAC, #42 on POP) is as close as it gets to a pure-HAC hit, since all the rest of HAC top 15 are also a POP hits with majority getting to around top 20 or higher. The closest one to Phillip situation is actually Kelly’s “People Like Us” (#9 on HAC with a healthy bullet, #31 on POP and barely breathing).
Then we have to go all the way down to #19 and Sara Bareilles “Brave” to find another song that is not in Top 40 on POP. (There are more of them down the line though…)

This is of course open to interpretation, but I would say the fact that GGG has made it so high on HAC without POP (or any other big format) support and gets to bump shoulders with Pink, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Maroon5’s latest offerings speaks to the streangs and likability of the song. And how well it works for the format that is obviously inclined to be swayed by big names.

  • Madilo

Maybe he’ll have his 2 songs in the top 10 at one point lol

  • Madilo

Looks like GGG has settled in the 30′s on itunes this week, do you think it’s due to POP stations playing it or all the formats combined ?

Kelly’s song is doing terrible on POP, they’re not playing it as they should, don’t know why.

  • Anny_nanny

I was thinking the same, although this is unlikely. But this is a strange format.

  • LongKissGoodnight

There is a massive gap between #12 and #10 (#10 is Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” it is falling but still has double the spins of GGG). So while GGG might overtake it’s faithful chart companion “Next to me” for 11th position, we will have to wait for about 3 more weeks for Taylor to loose enough spins so that GGG could sneak into top 10.

  • LongKissGoodnight

Yes partially new ears form POP station listeners only discovering the song for the first time… Partially the fact that it is the end of the week, and majority of new debuts that has been released to i-tunes on Monday (new singles/album tracks, The Voice covers) that were pushing GGG down the ladder have already slipped from the top (which is a usual weekly assurance).

  • Anny_nanny

I love your comments and explanations, does not disappear.

  • LongKissGoodnight

    Thanks. %) I’ll try.

There is not a lot of happening in Phillip land (and I
am too lazy to write about other ex-contestants when there are a lot of people who does it, and probably better) so for the most time I just stick to lurking.
    But I am around %))

  • Ria.

GGG probably started on HAC, then gained attention on POP because it was doing well. The big names will start on POP and get onto that chart as soon as the song drops.

  • TheOther

GGG #5 on the VH1 Top 20 countdown. Should have another good week of sales:)

  • girlygirl

Did “Home” ever hit #1 on the VH1 Top 20 countdown?

  • girlygirl

Anyone know if Vicci Martinez is going to release another single? “Come Along” has been out for months and months

  • girlygirl

GGG would probably not have even been sent to Pop radio if it hadn’t done great on its natural formats of AAA and HAC. Most of the other songs on the HAC chart are much more natural fits for pop radio than Phillip’s music.

As his career goes forward, Phillip is going to be relying on AAA and HAC radio to help keep him successful. He isn’t likely to have a ton of singles cross over to become huge hits on pop radio.

  • TheOther

Yes, it did – back in Dec.

  • girlygirl

He might. Songs can stay high on the AC chart for months…some even stay on that chart for more than one year.

  • LongKissGoodnight

In the light of discussions of Fifth Harmony first single and inevitable comparisons to Little Mix could someone please tell me if possible in details how Little Mix did in UK?

I vaguely know that well since their handlers attempting the crossover, but would like to hear from someone who paid close attention.

To my surprise I quite enjoy their album. They have a rather distinctive style and the bland of voices that is simply pleasing to my ears.

  • LongKissGoodnight

    >>Most of the other songs on the HAC chart are much more natural fits for pop radio than Phillip’s music.

That pretty much was my point. HAC became almost as much
of aggravator format as AC, so the fact that GGG had managed to climb into top 5 on HAC without validation from other big format is interesting to me.

  • Incipit

I asked that question of Google – the answer was once – December 1st, 2012.

VH1 looks very different from the last time I paid any attention to it, back in 2011,“…VH1 has taken tighter control of the songs played on the show, with the number of videos available to be voted onto the Top 20 Countdown reduced to less than 30, and several videos removed from the voting list while they were still in the top half of the Countdown. There are also less rivalries regarding songs that try to earn a #1 spot…”

What they don’t mention is the change in the voting, that shuts out anyone not on Facebook.

I recall some epic rivalries, the #1 spot trading back and forth for weeks in a row, back in 2008. I see that doesn’t happen anymore.

  • springboard2

Liitle Mix first single, Wings quite well and has sold over 400k, which is a hit, although a not a smash by UK standards.

Their second single did poorly, and their album sales are now around 300k which is platinum but not a great number for an X factor winner in the UK (double platinum would probably be the expected)

  • LongKissGoodnight

    Thank you!
    Very Interesting.

  • EvilTroyandEvilAbed

(This is a response to springboard2 as well.)

It’s so annoying though. Their label and mangement haven’t been working in tandem and their singles have suffered as a result. Wings performed really well, because it was the only single launch where both management and the label were working together and communicating clearly.

For example, Change Your Life could’ve easily gone top 10 if the label had released physical singles (with a B-side) and included an EP on iTunes. Management did a good job of securing good tv spots though.

Similarly, the How Ya Doin release was a complete mess. Management had good promo lined up, but they (or the label) forgot to replace the album version on iTunes (which doesn’t feature Missy) with the single cut so people were buying the album version instead of preordering the single version. In response, the label panicked and released How Ya Doin midweek, killing its chances of getting a good peak.

Chart positions might not seem like a big deal but they can have a huge influence on radio support in UK, and radio is crucial for a single’s longevity.

The second album is normally the danger zone for most XF UK acts so hopefully the team keep the momentum going and the girls release another album in fall. I also expect them to work together better otherwise the band is dead no matter the quality of the material.

  • Madilo

What’s your response to girlygirl who asked if Home did go #1 ?

I guess it’s yes it did but because things has changed a lot lol

  • EvilTroyandEvilAbed

Luckily, if the sales haven’t recouped costs and made Syco a profit, then the extra money coming in from sponsorship deals, book signings, dolls, and additional merchandise should be enough to keep the label satisfied.

I think the sophmore release will be crucial though since James Arthur will be releasing as well so Syco will be giving him lots of attention (and considering how well his single did, he’ll be getting a lot of effort put into him); I’m really hoping LM don’t get thrown by the wayside.

  • Incipit

No, Madillo – the response is Yes it did, on “December 1st, 2012″. One time.

    That’s not opinion.

The takeaway is – it only hit #1 once, I think because things have changed a lot at VH1 from the days of song rivalries that I recall.

    JMO

  • Madilo

    Thanks !
i might add that Pink and Rihanna’s songs (JGMAR and Stay) which were so big only hit #1 once too.

And it’s always good to be #1 no matter how long IMO

  • Madilo

anyone know how much time Home has spent on that chart, a year ?

  • taylor

It’s because Home was such a big hit on HAC. Also, people like Daughtry, Train, Mraz and sometimes Kelly will do much better on HAC than on Pop. GGG crossed over from HAC, but the other songs you mentioned didn’t.

GGG would have been a natural fit last summer on Pop during the summer of the banjos. That trend has passed, for now, on CHR stations. What helped Home last summer is going against P2 this summer on Pop. It’s almost a been there, done that kind of reaction that pop radio is having. I’m surprised, as I thought the folky sound would hang around longer.

  • LongKissGoodnight

    >>> I’m surprised, as I thought the banjo folky sound would hang around longer.

    So did I.

  • LongKissGoodnight

Home had spent 308 days in AC top 50 according to kworb site.

Remember it was released only a year ago, and would not have a reason to start charting on AC right away.

  • Madilo

Oh ! that’s huge, AC is so different :)

  • Incipit

    “…the summer of the banjos.”

Heh. OK, that’s perfect. I’m not complaining that the Folksy Fad was so transitory, I don’t like it at all and I’ll be happy to see the back of it – but I am also surprised it was such a short-lived trend.

  • Madilo

This will be its peak, next week it’ll start to decrease.

  • jayidrocks

Therefore, that the folksy trend has passed, it is respectable for GGG, to get in the top 50 already 2 days after the add-date and now standing on #42.
It will probably end in the #30s. But when the song can hold there some weeks, it´s all fine.
And how it looks, the charting on POP already seems to give the song a ( very little) push on the I-tunes sales.

On the other side GGG seems peaking on HAC now ( after 4 months doing fine). I think its the first time, that it got negative spins.
Is there any chance, that the song can reach #3 yet?

  • jayidrocks

    Why do you think so?

  • Madilo

Because it was demoted (it went recurrent) they can re-add it though :(
if it can go higher, i’m all in but i doubt it

  • Madilo

Expecting 50K for GGG this week

  • LongKissGoodnight

GGG had had some close to 0 updates before.
It is possible that today’s update is indication of the beginning of the end, since at this point GGG is not a spring chicken, coming from a relatively low profile name (that had fallen of the face of the Ears lately) and is surrounded by multy-format smashes from established stars.
But it can also as easily be just a fluke. I am not inclined to jump to conclusions based on one update.
Btw GGG had been just added by the last 2 stations on HAC monitored panel this Tuesday. It is spun by all 93 stations now.
I do believe there is some space for growth left and unless Interscope is just not that interested GGG should be able to reach at least top 3 (that sounds cooler that top5). LOL.

  • jayidrocks

    Thankyou for the info.
But nonetheless I think, #5 is respectable. :)

  • Madilo

    I remember a +0, 2 and 7 spins but not negative, i hope it’s just a fluke.

  • Madilo

    Sure

  • jayidrocks

  • Madilo

Now that Cassedee’s song is almost out of the top 100 on iTunes, she will need those country stations to play her song, what’s the promo she has in line ?

  • Madilo

    American Top 40 (HAC)
    05 06 (13) Phillip Phillips-Gone, Gone, Gone

GGG is #5 in its 13th week on the chart :)

  • maymay

    Ed Sheeran`s Lego House:
    1. #10 after 139 days on HAC radio chart.
    2. #23 after 97 days on POP radio chart.
    3. #41 on iTunes for now(climbed to the top 20 a while by promotions before)

GGG is a purer HAC hit, and catchier than LH. So I think it has the potential to do well on POP format. It just needs to sell more copies every week to attract POP radio. On iTunes, its ranking is stable, and gradually climbs high.

And Don`t forget Phillip doesn`t promote it for a month. John Mayer tours and radio tours will help it more.

  • Madilo

Hoping that 5H got some spins for the premiere of their song

    My guess would be 47K.

Back early this year I were a bit sceptical about GGG saleswise, I thought maybe it can reach gold, but not much more.
Then after it climbed on AAA and HAC and the sales increased, I thought, platinium is not impossible.
But now after overall sales of more than 800k and stable weekly sales of about 40k ( with slighly increasing tendence) I´m very confident about platinium. ; )

  • Madilo

BL is so huge right now its lead is amazing that the sales will increase, i’m expecting him to sell around 380K (it might even sell more like 400K).

Platinium is definitely in july imo

    Two questions re: GGG

    1. Now that it’s out of the Top 10 on AAA, is it eligible to go recurrent?

    2. Will a song ahead of it on the Pop chart go recurrent, allowing GGG to officially sneak into the Top 40?

On another note, it looks like Emblem3′s single has stalled. When do they go out on tour with Selena Gomez?

  • girlygirl

Ed Sheeran has had the advantage of touring with (and briefly being romantically linked with) Taylor Swift. I follow his weekly updates on BNS and his numbers on social media far exceed PP’s. So I don’t know if LH doing well on CHR will have any real effect on how GGG might do.

  • Derrick Johnson
  • Madilo

1- GGG was sent to radios feb 11 i think, now that it’s below 10, if it spent 20 weeks on the chart (i’m lazy to count), it’ll go recurrent.

    2- I don’t think there’s a song going recurrent but if we’re lucky, they’ll purge some (i hope so).

Emblem 3′s updates are so fickle, one day it’s good and another day it’s bad but i don’t think they’re done.

  • Madilo

She’ll go down down and if radios play it, it’ll go up again slowly, that’s how it works.
