really, the power of Idol !

  • LongKissGoodnight

I have to confess since GGG as a second single was basically a forgone conclusion I have been racking my brain about what will serve as a good third one even before GGG was officially announced.
After careful consideration “Get Up, Get Down” was my pick.
So I am glad that it seems to get some love from no-fans attracted to the album by discount.
Probably because it has a really hooky sample that stands out.

  • Lobilobi

but isn’t it a little bit sexy for a single ? hahaha

  • LongKissGoodnight

    Well…
For me a little bit sexy would be a welcome change ;)
And show another side of the album.
Would not want him to be type-cast as that guy who only sings romantic/uplifting folk tunes.

  • jpfan2

GGG has entered the top 10 on iTunes (you have to combine the popularity bars of both versions to know that though). ;0

  • Lobilobi

i love the song it’s uptempo and Phillips do it well but i love “Hold On” and “Tell me a story” what do you think of those songs as single

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

Wow at Haley’s IWHN entering the top 500

I think there is good chance that Deluxe version will make it into top 10.

Musically, ‘Home’ is a simple but beautiful song…P2′s own music is much more complex. Every time I listen I hear something new. ‘Hold On’ has gorgeous music!

“Where We Came From” was his second single!Am I right ?
GGG is the third single ..

  • durbesque

“Where We Came From” was leaked for fan reaction. GGG is the 2nd single.

  • LongKissGoodnight

“Where We Came From” was not leaked, it was an “instant gratification” track.
The song you could download for free when placing the pe-order for the album. Just something to wet fans appetite while they are waiting.

There is no universal rule regarding “instant gratification” tracks. Sometimes it’s a current single, sometimes just a song, that never gets a single treatment.

  • LongKissGoodnight

    Combined GGG is #9.

The World From The Side Of The Moon (Deluxe) is back on the home page of iTunes at number #10 tonight. Congrats P2!! (I know when you add in the standard version, currently at #19 he was probably numberically already at 10 BUT getting back on the home page is HUGE.)

  • girlygirl

Candice’s version of that song must have triggered this. Interesting that Jordin’s version isn’t on the iTunes chart, though. Is it not available on iTunes anymore?

    Really big update on AAA!
On HAC Pink’s new smash had leap frogged GGG as expected. Not a problem since GGG continues acting like a bona fide hit on the format, but “It’s Time” going recurrent tomorrow should suck it back into 20th position anyway.

Don’t be alarmed by the loss of AI. It seems that Mediabase has recalculated their formula, so songs all across the board are “loosing” AI. Thrift Shop as the biggest song on the radio has “lost” 16,7K AI.

It seems that the update I had posted yesterday was GGG’s post-Idol performance peak (#9 combined), today it has lost a tad and now seats at #10 combined.

  • Lobilobi

so all these moves will impact this week’s sales because the tracking week ends sunday or next week ?
i hope the album and the songs hold on a little there

  • LongKissGoodnight

This week. There was a uptick because of the discount + 3 days of post-Idol effect, but we will find out the results only next week on Wednesday.
Then it depends on how long the effect lasts and at what point the standard edition of the album goes back to regular price.

All and all I would say this was a very successful return.
Although I hope Phillip will get over his live tv nerves in future.
They should dupe him and say this is a dress rehearsal or something… LOL
When he is in his comfort zone guy is fire. %))

  • Lobilobi

so true, he was so nervous, he prefers when he has a small audience but i think he’ll change one day

i think that Home will take over Stronger next week so yay !

i’m waiting to see what’s next big move, so funny to watch Phillips chart runs

  • jpfan2

Thanks for the explanation on the decrease in audience. .
Great increases in both Triple A ahd HAC. G3 gains from being played on Idol but won’t blow up till CHR stations start playing it! Top 40 needs to get on board.

He was a sweaty mess but it was still a very good performance. I liked the faster G3 better than the slower. And the smirk at the end probably sold a few downloads as well. ;0

  • Lobilobi

hahaha i love when he does that, you can feel it that he’s enjoying his performance, he’s so passionate.
i’m with you i prefer when it’s faster it’s upbeat and people like catchy songs
what about the New York station that spinned the song ?

  • LongKissGoodnight

Mediabase has recalculated their formula, so songs all across the
board are “loosing” AI. Thrift Shop as the biggest song on the radio has
    “lost” 16,7K AI.

  • jpfan2

One of the HAC NYC stations is spinning GGG but has only played it 5x. Hoping they add it this week and play it more. I live in NYC and want to hear it on the radio. Plus NY and LA are the big markets for radio.

  • Lobilobi

Gone, Gone, Gone is top #9 combined (0.4598)

  • jpfan2

Even though G3 is moving down iTunes (now #20), it’s still actually #9 overall. Please iTunes work your magic so there is only one version of GGG to buy. There’s no guarantee the song will break into the top 10 again (at least for a long time). ;0

  • http://www.facebook.com/jenny.williams.391 Jenny Williams

Does anyone know when Interscope will start promoting it to CHR? I’d have thought they’d have done that long ago, since he’s already had one hit there?

  • madilo

i don’t know but maybe they’re waiting for the song to be bigger on HAC and Triple A to promote it

  • madilo

i don’t think they’ll do it and even if they do, itunes will not combine the two versions i think, like GGG being in the top 10 with one version

  • LongKissGoodnight

Phillip is not a core POP artist, AAA & HAC are his main formats, so Interscope is working his single there.
Then, if the song is very successful on it’s core format (which GGG is, it just has not enough time to reach it’s full potential) and is a big digital seller (which I believe it will be) label will attempt the crossover to POP.
Developing a crossover hit is usually a long affaire. For example… Well, let’s take Mumford & Sons, since they are so often brought up in conversations about Phillip. It took 2-2,5 month after their debut single “I Will Wait” had reached it’s peak on Alternative (#1) before it debuted on CHR chart.
So to start promoting a song that had been released to radio barely a month ago and not even half way through with it’s run on the core formats… That would be very unusual and imho premature.
I would guess that Interscope might use the positive response to Idol performance to lay some groundwork behind the scenes. But I would not expect GGG to debut on CHR earlier then in a few weeks, and would not be bothered if it’s not there in 2 month (GGG should be #1 on AAA and closing on top 5 on HAC by then).

Again, crossover hit is a lengthy road. Unlike flash in the pan pop-smashes that can come and peak in 3 month most crossovers take up to 5-6 month to play itself out. But they are usually reworded by higher album to single sales ratio and rack very impressive numbers to the song itself, often dew to longevity.

  • LongKissGoodnight

I-tunes would had to reprogram the core structure of their system, or at least write a patch to deal with something that is probably a very low-priority issue from their point of view.
It would be a nice treat for us chart watchers, but I doubt very much that they are going to bother.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jenny.williams.391 Jenny Williams

Thanks for the reply. All makes sense now. So for an artist like Jessica whose main format is Top 40, this means Interscope will promote it to there right away, right?

  • LongKissGoodnight

    Yep. %)
And possibly Rhythmic, if it fits the format (I have not listened to the song yet).

  • Madilo

GGG is top 11 combined, still holding really well after three days

  • LongKissGoodnight

    17/03/2013: GGG is #12 combined.

Congrats to @BlakeLewis – #YourTouch climbs 133 places on this weeks #OfficialChart to enter the #Top40 at #Number38!

Phillip isn’t a pop artist, so CHR radio is going to be a lower priority for the label in terms of promoting him. And, like “Home”, GGG is not a natural fit for that format. So it likely won’t crossover to CHR for awhile yet, if it ever does. I would think the random CHR station might start giving it a spin or two to test it out, but an actual official push from the label may not actually happen unless it looks like it is getting some real interest from that format

  • Madilo

how much do you think GGG will sell ? i say 65K

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

“up until this moment the band called Fun. is the sole alt.rock act that had managed more then one crossover POP hit. Them and that AAA girl… what’s her name?.. Adele.”

Do you mean in the past year?

You can go back two, five, ten years ago and there were alt. rock bands crossing over to HAC and Pop. Neon Trees has had two singles cross over in the past few years. How about The Script? Do collabs count? Ed Sheeran currently has another song in the top 50 on Pop. The Lumineers have another song going for pop adds soon.

  • LongKissGoodnight

Sounds about right, though I would go with a tad more conservative 55-60K.

  • Anny_nanny

How many singles need to sell that it to be “good” for a second?

  • Madilo

yeah i think i’m overestimating but it would be great

  • LongKissGoodnight

What do you mean? (I did not understand the question %)

  • Anny_nanny

Someone said second singles will always fail (for wgwg). I want to know how many singles to be sold to this was not flop.

  • Incipit

Someone said second singles will always fail (for wgwg).

I recall that someone said that, anny_nanny. The thing is, it is NOT so. The facts contradict that statement…especially the ‘always’ part. Your Special Snowflake will be fine w/that song that’s being released, whether it’s being counted as a first or second single( and how the Coronary gets counted is rather fluid.) I can do some searching and try to find the rebuttal, if you like, it has numbers. Heh.

  • Anny_nanny

A lot of text, a lot of information, I don’t understand. Can you say it is easier? If GGG will gold – is it good or bad? And if there is only 300K?

  • Incipit

Anny_nanny, I am not a NumberNerd. I hope one of them will give you the numbers you want.. I don’t follow Phillip at all, but it’s hard to miss that the style of music in the marketplace is working for him, right now. What I was trying to show you with the history of other guitar playing winners is that even if they sold a bit less of their second single, none of them had any trouble with it – and I do not see any reason why Phillip should either, so, not to worry about a flop.

  • LongKissGoodnight

For HAC hit that does not cross over to other formats 500K+ would be the norm, 1 million a great result.
For a multiformat hit a million would be the norm and pretty much sky is the limit.

    ???? ????? ????? ????? ?? HAC (??? ????????? ?????? ????????) ????? ????? ?? ???????????? ?????? ? ????. ??????? – ??????? ????????? (????????? HAC ?? ????? ??????????? ? ????? ?????? ??????? ??????? ??????).
    ???? ????? ????? ????? ?? ?????????? ?????????? ??????? ???????? ?? ??????? ?? ???????? ? ????.

  • LongKissGoodnight

and how the Coronary gets counted is rather fluid

It’s all very strait-forward single is the song that label promotes to the radio.
There has been cases when radio and public responded positively to winners coronation song, so label jumped on it and promoted it – that makes song Idol’s first single.
Everything else including Adam’s “Time For Miracle” (not promoted to US radio) – not a single.

  • Ria_

500k+ sounds like a lot. Do you have examples of that as the norm for songs that did not cross over? Or are you saying if a song sells that much it normally has crossed over?

  • jpfan2

For a single to be considered a hit the song should go platinum in my opinion. If GGG only sells 300-500K that would be OK for an HAC song but probably means the end of singles from the album.

GGG is in good shape because one appearance on Idol boosted it up to the top 10 on iTunes. And that didn’t happen at all to the Bon Jovi song done the same night. So that’s a sign the song is getting a good response. Also album sales look to be stable.
GGG can’t really blow up in sales unless Top 40 radio plays it though. And HAC is a fairly slow chart so it’ll take a while to break into the top 10 there. Thank God it’s the Idol boot song That should be great for sales.

  • jpfan2

WWFS – big HAC station in NYC has added GGG. Which means maybe I’ll hear it on the radio now.

  • standtotheright

Interscope is not going to look at just single sales to determine if they are going to invest in another single. They’re going to look at whether or not the second single is stimulating steady album sales, where the song peaked on the core formats, and whether other potential singles have enough response from PDs to get a buy-in after GGG finishes its run.

  • jpfan2

Agree. I didn’t mean to imply it was all about single sales. No album off the BB200 ever gets a promoted single. Steady album sales are key as well.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“I’m too lazy to look at other Idol singles but Adam, Kris and Daughtry all struggled with sales with follow up singles even though the songs did OK on HAC.”

Daughtry’s follow up singles on his debut album sold very well (from wiki):

    1st single: “It’s Not Over”, 2,103,000 sales (April, 2010)

    2nd single: “Home”, 2,012,000 sales (January, 2011)

3rd single: “Over You”, 1,315,000 sales (Jan. 2011)

4th single: “Feels Like Tonight”, ?

5th single: “What About Now”, ?

  • Madilo

that’s cool, i hope more stations add it, it’ll be top 1 soon on Triple maybe that will gain it some exposure
what about the adds for this week ?

  • LongKissGoodnight

I was interested in the matter and browsed the charts for examples at the end of 2011 – beginning of 2012. If memory serves me right 400-500K was a solid average result for a pure HAC hit at the time.
So that what my answer was based on.
But finding examples did present a problem because HAC was CHR little sister then. Today HAC is Alternative big-little brother, (and whatever is not charting on ALT/AAA is charting on CHR) so finding examples of pure HAC hits is also troublesome. I don’t have time to do it right now, sorry.)

  • http://twitter.com/MarcusCantyFans This…Is #TeamCanty

Marcus Canty’s EP is also #1 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers Chart!

  • LongKissGoodnight

Yes I meant in the last couple years obviously. What is the point going back when it’s current musical climate we are discussing here.

“Top 50″ and “going for adds” is not a hit.

If you insist on nitpicking my posts I would appreciate if you read them carefully.
