They all are about half of what the S10 crew sold first week.
It was just posted in a thread here not long ago:
Scotty sold 40,00, Lauren 20,000, James 15,000 and Haley 14,000 first week.
(There was no EP for 5th place last year.)

Well then I guess Kris is going to have to start pretty much from scratch? Maybe he should focus more on songwriting and see if that opens up more opportunities for him. I think he is a very good songwriter, and it seems to be something he gets a lot of pleasure from. If he makes enough money from that he could use it to fund his own music, tours etc.

Did S10 have Journey to the Finale itunes albums or just the walmart EPs? And are the EPs that are on Amazon the same as the Walmart EPs or something different? And then there is also a S11 compilation album? Was there one for S10?

I’d like to know what you consider moderate success — 99% of the musicians in the world would LOVE to have sold 300+K albums and nearly 2 million copies of a single song. And I don’t care if 1 copy or every copy was bought by an Idol fan — those numbers still are above what pretty much anyone in the music industry — and definitely most people outside the Idol bubble —  would consider “moderate success”. (There are even a fair amount of artists who would love to sell the 25K or so that TYC has sold to date. There have been multiple articles in recent years that show that less than 10% of the albums released in any calendar year sell more than FIVE THOUSAND copies)

And I bring up other artists on the radio because there are a lot of artists who have not come close to having sold 300+K of all their albums COMBINED, let alone a single album, or come close to having a gold single, let alone a platinum one, who get radio play. And yet you continue to insist that it is Kris’ lack of sales that keeps him from getting radio play.

That may play a SMALL part in radio PD’s decision making, but obviously it is not the primary reason, otherwise pretty much no artists outside a select handful would ever get their music on the radio. There are several more important reasons than lack of sales that point to his lack of radio play: (A) the song doesn’t fit the format well; (B) the song is not great; (C) the label has refused to push it to radio (more than one person has been told by their local radio PD or DJ that RCA hasn’t “serviced” the station, so they see no reason to play the song)

Musicians need buzz. Sad to say but Gavin was helped by the news of his assault. I remember when his single was languishing with TLG and many other pop/rock artists on HAC and then suddenly “found” some momentum. Plus he has a long history of hits so once momentum is juiced its not hard to get people on board. Ellie and Carly found international success first. After the popularity of Adele radio is looking in the international bin (and the Alt rock charts) for new buzzy artists. Idols who are removed years from winning or appearing on a TV show are the antithesis to buzz. CHR seems like a lotto ticket, which new artist will have the biggest pop and then radio moves on and bets on the next buzzy thing. There is very little artist development or loyalty to artists who have had prior hits.

Phillip is getting a music video

    @phillips:disqus
#Had a long day of shooting the music video for “home”. Going to be pretty neat i think. So tired though.

Wow I thought Stefano’s song would at least make top 40 but now it looks like its cooked.

Serviced? Does that mean what I think it means? lol

Gavin’s song was also selling very well.  I remember when Kelly’s MKIA was released, and it was noted on here that sales of Gavin’s song were far ahead of its AI, and the sales of many of the songs on the chart that had a similar AI.

girlygirl said: I’d like to know what you consider moderate success — 99% of the musicians in the world would LOVE to have sold 300+K

Yes, 300K albums sold would be successful, I wouldn’t even label it as moderate in this market, but we know that those sales had little to do with Kris’ music.  That point is hammered home with TYC only selling 24,000 and falling out of the top 200 after just two weeks.  We knew that Kris wasn’t benefiting from the success of LLWD, when that song was averaging at least 50,000 sold for more than two months straight, but at the same time, sales of the album were crashing.  Because of digital downloads, a hit single may not lead to people buying an album, but it should have lead to more stability than what we saw during the time when LLWD was at its peak.

girlygirl said: And yet you continue to insist that it is Kris’ lack of sales that keeps him from getting radio play.

Nope, I keep insisting that it is everything combined.  If it was just the sales, then that would be a problem, especially since he has to make the label money in order to keep his contract, but he’s dealing with a lot more than that, and I’ve listed those things before, so I won’t again.  Overall, right now his image is just not good.  For reasons that are his, 19′s, and the labels fault he is carrying around a lot of baggage that is going to all be weighed by PDs when they are deciding whether or not to play his music.

You do realize that this is a line that djs have been given AI fans since the Clay Aiken years?  It’s the same as saying that they don’t have the song.  I’ll translate it, “Our Program Director hasn’t put that song on the playlist yet, so please stop calling us.”

Well then I guess Kris is going to have to start pretty much from scratch?
This is one of the things that I found really upsetting, leading up to the release of the second album, but I don’t see how Kris, his management, and label didn’t see that this is the position that he was in.  Given the success of LLWD, it makes no sense that he was pretty much back at the starting point, except this time he was going to get fewer promotional opportunities and press, because he was three years removed from AI.

That’s why I don’t understand waiting two months before the album came out, before they started to do things that were intended to get his face back out to the public.  Or, why after abandoning the youtube channel, not keeping the website updated, and not doing the best job to keep fans involved via twitter, those things were used as the main ways of promoting Kris and the album.  Maybe, that tactic would have been fine a year before the albums release, but not two months.

It’s like there was no recognition of the mistakes that were made the last time around, or the fact that Kris, like every other alum, was going to see a massive erosion in his AI fan support, and considering that he didn’t start off with a lot of support in the first place, his remaining AI fanbase was going to be one of the smallest that any Alum has ever had.  I just don’t understand why, from a promotional standpoint, wasn’t anything done to address these issues, which in turn may have helped Kris to get airplay and sell more albums and singles.

Overall, right now his image is just not good.

I think the problem is he doesn’t have much of an image at all. Maybe they should play up the “heartthrob” image a little. That image is not incongruous with his on stage persona and I see plenty of indication that he is viewed that way by many fans. He just needs more of them, lol!

  • Anonymous

I think it’s a weird combination of not having an image, meaning not being on the radar of so many people, but at the same time, being just another male idol alum who never evolved to being more than just an AI winner.  The guy who seems uncomfortable during interviews, didn’t seem like he wanted to be there at times, doesn’t like photo shoots, interviews, or being in the spotlight.  He’s shy or reserved in most interviews, but sometimes people are going to interpret that as being standoffish.

Those things can describe a lot of artists, but the problem is that combined with all of the other obstacles that Kris is facing, these things don’t help him at all.

  • Anonymous

Maybe I’m wrong but wasn’t Kris so hellbent against the “heartthrob” image? I remember there was shirtless pics surfacing of him and he got upset about it. Kris (along with other male idol alums I would guess) just want it to be just about the music. But they have to know that an artist’s “image” is important too just as much as the music.

  • Anonymous

I wasn’t implying he should do anything against his beliefs like a naked photoshoot lol! From what I recall he was “upset” with the pics because he said he was “pasty” and didn’t think he looked good. It would be nice if it was just all about the music but as we know it’s not. I think that image could be played up without it making Kris uncomfortable.
