I was able to get access to the Top 400 songs on iTunes via my feed but nothing higher than that. Mmmm…

  • Anonymous

Well, Ne-Yo, I think you’re dead-on about the disposable, add-water-and-stir artists. Some of that obviously relates to the Internet and the possibility of one-song-at-a-time buys. But really I think it’s just part of the overall business climate. Don’t long-term-invest in a company to help build it — just nip into the stock when the prices go a certain way to make your bucks onthe margin, then fly out. Don’t hire an employee to train, and help with health care and retirement funding and pay even when she’s not working, on the Fourth of July. Hire an “independent contractor,” to whom you have no obligation whatsoever, and when you’re done with the particular service, throw him/her away like used kleenex. Seems economically smart, and I suppose it may be, in the short term. But this is the mindset that’s leaving us pretty devoid of long-term investments — in musicians and in pretty much everything else, too.

Could you share how you got 400?  I’ve been playing with it off and on but haven’t managed to get more than 100.

I think that this is the top 400 but there is no numbering, I’ll have to look into it:

This is done with the Apple rss generator

Nice debut for Jason Mraz.  Adele just keeps selling like crazy.  Now I’m thinking that she’ll easily sell 10 million (diamond) and may end up selling 11 million.

?Ugh first iTunes destroys the pop bars, now they limit their overall chart to top 200 instead of top 1000. Assholes.

Wonder what the reasoning would be for limiting this.”

Maybe Sony and UMG slipped Apple a little cash on the side to limit the revealed sales numbers — to further the impression that nobody, and I mean nobody, matters in music except *their* “hit” acts. After all, the lower ranks have all that old stuff, the losers who sell only to small niches and that S and U will dump tomorrow and, worse, all those nasty *indies.* We don’t want people thinking they sell *any* music, you know! Or that, god forbid, their music is even available for sale.

Seriously. It wouldn’t surprise me. The big labels and movie studios hated iTunes so much at first that Apple’s done plenty of fancy dancing over the years to keep on their good side.

I think it has very little to do with the labels, and more to do with iTunes wanting to save its server hits for the people actually spending money.  I suspect that most of the people who are looking at the top 1000 have already purchased the songs whose rankings they are viewing.

Apple as a company may have more money than Croesus, but that means that controlling costs may have an even more outsized impact on its stratospheric stock price at this point.  If they can push more iTMS traffic away from the lookie-loos to the actual motivated customers, that may just be good business sense.
