Is it funny because he the writer doesn’t realize that FYE was released to radio, or because FYE didn’t get a lot of airplay, so most people don’t know about it?

Both? Just more of a giggle that ‘released to radio’ and official singles and add dates are some of the most argued topics in the numbers threads, FYE being a hot one. And Billboard saying it might have been a hit amused me. Who knows what really happened behind the scenes with that song. I’ll always be happy RCA adjusted quickly, but if FYE would have hit immediately, I wonder if WWFM would have been the next single. World works in weird ways.

    Thanks Smegs for the numbers..

    I like this:

3K was his rounded pre-xmas season weekly sales. Not bad to see it maintain that level in a really bad sales week.

Buffynut: Someone posted BB200 and Top 200 songs chart on Pulse forum.

I knew that billboard are not always right about what song should be the single, but I expected billboard to at least check facts. It’s not that hard to find out that FYE went for adds, so it’s obviously was released to radio. I guess the writer just assumed that since it didn’t charted based on airplay It means it wasn’t released to radio(which is a very strange logic ot use).

VH 1 Top 20 Countdown for this morning:

11 Lee DeWyze “Sweet Serendipity” [3|11] [+1] New Peak
15 Crystal Bowersox “Farmer’s Daughter” [1|15] [DEBUT] 1st ever video by Crystal Bowersox to debut on VH1 Top 20

i think the billboard guy was just, however inarticulately, trying to make the point that in the age of digital downloads lots of songs make the hot 100 without having any radio presence…and these few were songs he picked out as “coulda been” hits if they had a radio presence. Yes, he made a mistake on FYE as it was released as a single…its just an online reader q&a column..i doubt the writer spends much time researching things..big deal. He does make a good point tho. Due to itunes, tons of songs nowadays make the hot 100 with zero airplay — glee, post-idol finale downloads, album tracks off of big name releases. Maybe they should tinker with the hot100 criteria again to take account of this. Because a deep album cut should not be making the hot 100 simply based on release week download sales.

Anyway, I will note for the record that 4 songs off of FYE charted on the hot 100 (TfM, FYE, WWFM, and IIHY)…two (WWFM and IIHY) as a combination of sales and airplay, one (TfM) solely on sales, and one (FYE)based on sales and very minimal airplay. 4 hot 100 songs off a debut album is pretty darn good.

The average reader who isn’t inside the idol bubble wouldn’t know the difference if a song was released to radio or went for adds especially for a song that received only 2 weeks of radio play, but they will be checking out the video so mission accomplished. :)

  • JazzRocks

Yes, some of those numbers I posted above are not updated. Sorry!

That soundscan total listed above says that IIHY is at 733,891.

This includes the remixes which Idol Chatter doesn’t apparently.
I wish we could get update totals for WWFM. It’s certain to be much higher than 1.582M by now.
So, in essence, his total singles sales are in reality much higher then 2,756,000. And then add the 15,000 from Acoustic Live.
It would be nice to know the total US sales. I doubt we’ll ever know the world-wide total.
