America’s Got Talent Premiere Down from Last Season

Ratings are in from TVByTheNumbers

On NBC, the season premiere of America’s Got Talent earned a 3.6 adults 18-49 rating, compared to a 3.8 in the time period for the finale of The Voice last week and a 4.3 for last year’s season premiere on June 2, 2011. The season finale of Smash scored a 1.8 among adults 18-49, matching its performance for the prior two weeks.

The premier of America’s Got Talent rated lower than it’s premiere last year, despite the presence of new judge, Howard Stern. It’s worth noting that the competition is stiffer than it was when the show premiered with The Voice as a lead in.

It’s true that the lead in and the competition were different last year but I really thought Howard Stern and the endless ads they runned on every NBC show the past two months would have pushed it higher than that.

Wow, how much are they paying Howard Strern? I thought he was good last night, but Howie had the funnier lines. Just sayin!

Wow, headlines really shape perception! NBC must be thrilled with the AGT 18-49 numbers. You can’t compare last night’s premiere to the June premiere from last year because the competition was just not the same. AGT was competing last night with the semi finals of DWS and two of CBS’s biggest sitcoms, including the finale of Two and A Half Men. It was also competing with the finale of Bones. Taking all that into account and the fact that all TV ratings have been down this year, including the mighty Idol, a 3.6 for two hours is great. Don’t forget the 3.8 for the Voice was for its finale. To me, the big story was the pathetic 1.8 for Smash. After its big opening, that number must be a huge disappointment. Really surprised it survived the chopping block.

The ratings weren’t bad and I don’t doubt there was more competition last night, but I seriously thought the curiosity factor over Howard Stern would be higher.

Here in New York they were also competing with the first round of the NHL Eastern conference finals of Rangers v Devils. Lots of Howard fans here in New York!

I think the ratings will pick up for AGT when DWTS ends and the reruns of the other shows begin.  I would bet the ratings in 2 weeks will be higher for AGT.

I’m a little surprised. I thought that Howard would draw a bigger audience, if only out of curiosity. Maybe, the ratings will be higher once DWTS ends.
