I’ll be live blogging the American Music Awards right here! Stay tuned for Videos.

It starts! Usher takes the stage with a medley of hits Numb; Climax; Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop. Now THAT was pretty HOT.

Ryan Seacrest takes the stage! Tonight we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the American Music Awards. We’ll be taking a trip down memory lane. Right now, check out Beyonce performing “Put a Ring on It”, with Glee’s Heather Morris! Not exactly ancient history!

Ryan presents the first award – Favorite Male Artist Pop Rock to Justin Bieber. It’s his 5th AMA win. He’s nominated for two more awards.  Justin says “This is for the HATERZ who thought I’d be around for just a couple years…I’m going to be around for many years to come.”  Uhm Justin. It HAS only been a couple of years. Don’t get smug, now!

Eric Stonestreet from Modern Family takes the stage to present Favorite Country Female Artist. Will Carrie Underwood win? FINGERS CROSSED.  The winner is Taylor Swift. UGH SHE”S NOT LONGER A COUNTRY ARTIST. SO FREAKING BOGUS.  Eric asks her if she ever won an award before. LOLZ.  She’s keeping “surprise face” at bay.

Lucy Hale and Phillip Phillips take the stage! Didn’t she win American Juniors? They introduce another reality singing show contestant, Carly Rae Jepsen, who sings “This Kiss” and “Call Me Maybe”.

Next, it’s The Wanted singing “I Found You”. Falsetto for the win? Uhm. Not really.

Randy Jackson takes the stage! First, it’s a shout out to Hurricane Sandy victims. Randy is introducing the GREAT KELLY CLARKSON. She’s singing a medley of Miss Independent; Since U Been Gone; Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You); Catch My Breath. CUTE! She’s wearing a cute short dress with an AMERICAN IDOL NUMBER PLASTERED ON HER STOMACH! Dancers sit in chairs in front of her as if they were judges. Ahhhhh! SHE’S THE QUEEN! She eventually rips off the number before she sings “Stronger”.

Stacy Keebler and Ne-Yo take the stage. In 1972 Hip Hop was something the Easter Bunny did. Ohhh K.  The present Favorite Album Rap Hip Hop to Nicki Minaj. It’s her 3rd AMA. She won in the same category last year. She thanks her Barbz and Lil Wayne.

The legendary Cyndi Lauper takes the stage to introduce a performance from Ke$ha. The pop singer performs “Die Young”. She launches into an African drum solo. Very tribal.

Karmin take the stage to introduce No Doubt. They sing “Looking Hot”. In case we need it spelled out there are flames shooting out of the stage. Gwen Stefani is looking more and more like Madonna.

Kerry Washington and Anton Apolo OhNo is next. They present Favorite Alternative Rock Artist to Linkin Park. It’s their fifth win in the category. I’m a little surprised they won, to be honest. But I guess they’ve got a fan base who have stuck around over the years.

Taylor Swift is next. She sings “I Knew You Were Trouble” live on TV for the First Time Evah. Gosh, she really deserved that Best Female Country Artist, didn’t she? Next year, move her into the Pop category please. There ain’t nothing country about this performance.

Ginnifer Goodwin and… present the Favorite Male Artist – Soul R&BUsher wins. HOORAY. So glad it wasn’t that ass clown, Chris Brown. Was Usher bleeped? He’s giving a very discombobulated speech.

Lady Antebellum present Favorite Country Male Artist to Luke Bryon.

Linkin Park take the stage to RAWK OUT on “Burn It Down”.  Now it’s time for me to grab a snack!

And now, Nicki Minaj sings “Freedom”. It’s the debut! The stage is decorated as a pink park, she’s in white, a gospel choir joins her on stage. Very understated for Ms. Minaj. This is actually a beautiful song. She be cray cray, but she’s hella talented.

Heidi Klum takes the stage to introduce Rock Star, Poet and Fashionista PINK! Hell yes. She sings “Try”. She’s performing the gorgeous dance routine from the video. This is amazing. Is she singing live? Yes she is! This is AMAZING.

The Backstreet Boys take the stage to present an award to the New Artist of the Year.  Carly Rae Jepsen takes it. WHAT???? Not One DirectionSimon Cowell is pissed. Hooray.

Colbie Caillat and Gavin Degraw introduce the Earnst and Young dudes and then presents Favorite Group Country to Lady Antebellum. This is their 3rd win in a row.

Carly Rae Jepsen introduces her BFF Justin Bieber. He sings As Long As You Love Me and Beauty and a Beat. Nicki Minaj joins him for the latter. Nicki has changed into a black wig! Justin still seems like a 12 year old. He’s hard to take seriously.

Elisha Cuthbert and Kelly Rowland gives us an acronym lesson. They present the Favorite Artist – EDM to David Guetta. The category is brand new.

Gloria Estefan introduces Christina Aguilera who sings Lotus; Army of Me; Let There Be Love. It’s time for acceptance and self love, ya’ll!

Pitbull is next to sing “Don’t Stop the Party”. Pitbull is like, party dude man.  When he tells me not to stop, I listen. Christina takes the stage to make the affair a SUPER DUPER LATIN PARTY.

Luke Bryon and Jenny McCarthy take the stage to present Favorite Pop Rock Album to  Justin Bieber for “Believe” I wonder if he’ll that the Haterz again.  Oh. He forgot to thank Usher last time. And God.  Jenny is all dolled up like the Corporate Porn Secretary. OMG she attacks him to cover his neck in kisses. “I feel violated right now,” says Justin.

Now, it’s time for CARRIE UNDERWOOD COUNTRY QUEEN .She debuts her new single. “Two Black Cadillacs.”  She’s wearing a pretty, sparkly, feathery black dress.

Brandy takes the stage to explain why she has called her album 2-11. She will never forget the day that Whitney Houston died.  Hm. A little exploitative maybe? She introduces Swizz Beats with Chris Brown and Ludacris. They sing “Everyday Birthday”. I dig this song as long as I ignore ass clown, Chris Brown. HAPPY BIRFDAY AMA.

Hayden Panetiere and 50 cent take the stage to present present Favorite Artist, Rap Hip Hop to Nicki Minaj. She thanks her Barbz again. And her hairdresser.

Neon Trees, straight out of Utah, present Favorite Country Album to Carrie Underwood for Blown Away. Oh, her husband Mike in the audience hugs her and grins as he takes her purse. Hee. “This means so much for me…I couldn’t love my life any more than I do right now.”

Ryan Seacrest takes the stage to introduce the Dick Clark tribute.  Stevie Wonder takes the stage to sing “Master Blaster”, “My Cherie Amore,” and “Sir Duke” as photos of Dick and so many musical artists flash on the back video screen.

Let’s celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Michael Jackson’s Bad. A special airing on ABC on Thanksgiving!

Wil.i.am presents Artist of the Year to Justin Bieber.   Those Beliebers still know how to vote! It’s his 7th AMA and 3rd one tonight. He brings his moms up on stage with him. HE CAN BARELY TALK. “It’s hard growing up with everything going on…” Uhm. Ok.

Psy finishes the show with a special guest….MC Hammer. REALLY? Am I supposed to be excited about that? DRESS CLASSY DANCE CHEESY Y’ALL.

I love Adam, and he normally can do no wrong in my eyes, but his AMA performances was one of the most uncomfortable performances I have ever witnessed on any awards show, ever. From the terrible vocals, to the bad dancing and near fall, to the barely lukewarm audience reaction, to the try-hardness of it all. I let my boys stays up late to watch it with me – and we we were literally dumbstruck by how bad it was, considering how great he usually is.

  • iluvai

I liked his near fall. It was so cool.  He totally recovered on that! Like an action hero :)

  • suenigma

Hahaha. Yes his recovery was impressive, but I have a feeling he wasn’t to pleased that it happened. Poor Adam. I actually think it was a blessing in disguise that there was so much controversy about the kissing and sexuality, because it took the attention away from the quality of the performance. Adam himself said that he was not pleased with how he sounded.

  • mjsbigblog

    Reminder:

Let’s keep the conversation focused on this year’s AMAs.

  • lovetheusa1776

Liked Keisha – so much fun.

  • Nedsdag

The whole show felt like it was produced by Scooter Braun Productions (Bieber’s manager) instead of Dick Clark Productions. Best New Artist? Carly Rae Jepsen (I like the song, but she was literally a Bieber discovery). Also, The Wanted performed (represented by Braun). Plus Psy closed it out (monster song, but guess who represents him?). Plus, Biebs performed and was the big winner of the night. Coincidence, anyone?

ETA: I totally agree with you regarding the One Direction/Beatle vibe. I guess I may be the only one who does.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Those artists were on the show because they had some of the best selling singles and albums of the last year. Bieber won because he has a massive army of dedicated fans voting for him.

Scooter Braun manages all four of those artists you listed? Damn, he’s doing something right.

  • Nedsdag

    Yep!

Don’t get me wrong, I know the AMAs are for the best selling artists and I didn’t knock them. In fact, I downloaded the songs of the artists I mentioned on my iPod. I just found it a coincidence.

  • suenigma

At least there are two of you who like One Direction -I think that I may be the ONLY one here who actually kinda likes Justin Bieber. No lipsynching or backtrack on that first song at all, and yeah it wasn’t perfect, but he’s getting better.

     Seems like an eternity.

  • Incipit

Something came up, and I missed the Pentatonix pre-show – are there videos for that anywhere?

I checked out a few performance videos, and thank you, mj. I don’t listen to Pop music, but Pink and Kelly – both sounded super good. I’ve heard Carrie do her song with a better sound mix -

The embarrassment of the nominees in Male Pop/Rock, Flo Rida, Pitbull, Usher, Bieber - when not.a.single.one.of.them are Rock of any kind was only surpassed by Justin Bieber winning the category awards…and yes, I know it’s nothing but a popular vote. But the AMA’s could just take Rock off the Pop/Rock designation, thank you –  and quit pretending they represent the rock genre in any way – they don’t.

    This, however, made me *chuckle*

New Artist of the Year.  Carly Rae Jepsen takes it. WHAT???? Not One Direction!  Simon Cowell is pissed. Hooray.

    Yeah.

  • chillj

Bieber’s street look and, for that matter, his street talk always crack me up; he seems like a kid playing dress-up.

  • chillj

With her legs, Carrie should just wear shorts; she stuns me.

  • chillj

Totally agree.  I was really looking forward to this show and thirty seconds in I realized there was a problem:  it is one of the awful music award shows.  I forget every year.  If they want an audience, you would think they could put a little cash into production.

  • chillj

I don’t think she was wearing an ear monitor.  I started looking for one – and either they are making them much smaller or there was none.

  • chillj

I thought his red shoe song was good, and I never think Biebs is good.  Ever.  I need to get used to him.  He is the Britney Spears of his generation, so his generation is not likely to let go.

  • kmd23

Scooter Braun has taken over. That guy has a huge ego and now a lot of money. It is too bad because I don’t like the guy. He knows how to manipulate the social medium with the young fans. Interesting that his artists that he signs do not win Grammys. I agree about 1D too.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake Williams

Justin Bieber definitely doesn’t deserve these awards. His new album is horrid. Like no catchy songs at all. One direction deserved all of his awards IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/mwk89 Matthew Kitson

So much Taylor Swift hate, chill out MJ

  • irockhard

Can they please SEPARATE the rock and pop categories so that they’ll be forced to honour real rock acts! And WTF at Taylor Swift winning best female country artist??? Like MJ said, she’s not country anymore.

  • irockhard

The embarrassment of the nominees in Male Pop/Rock, Flo Rida, Pitbull, Usher, Bieber - when not.a.single.one.of.them are Rock of any kind was only surpassed by Justin Bieber winning the category awards…and yes, I know it’s nothing but a popular vote. But the AMA’s could just take Rock off the Pop/Rock designation, thank you –  and quit pretending they represent the rock genre in any way – they don’t.

ITA, if they won’t separate the pop and rock categories then just leave rock out of it (LOL I just remembered James’ “WTF” tweet when he saw those nominees), we’ll stick with the GGAs, thank you very much.
