American Idols Live – Little Rock, AR – 07/25/09

Q3 is at the concert tonite and again tomoorrow in Memphis, so whoever is able to pass on twitters would be greatly appreciated, it’s so much fun folowing this blow by blow. My husband thinks I’m nuts. Next Saturday night I’ll be in Charlotte, NC. Hopefully will recap, but my writing skills are certainly not of the caliber I’ve been reading.

I’ve been hanging by the pool, finishing “New Moon,” (I know, I’m late, I’m sorry. As a writer, I was bitter about Stephanie’s success at first, but now I’m totally on board.) and listening to my reworked Adam playlist. Life is good.

Guys you can always open two windows for mj’s website. One for the Coveritlive and the other one to read others comment so you don’t have to go back and forth and refresh. That’s what I do now.

I like the comments separate from the tweets. Easy to either toggle between tabs, or have side by side windows, depending upon preference. Tweets move fast, only 140 characters; comments slower/longer, there would be a misconnect.

Matt was totally awesome tonight, the cellcast was so clear when he was performing Georgia he TOTALLY blew me away!! I got to see Ray Charles years ago live (in a small venue no less than 10 feet away) singing the same song and I thought Matt would have made the legend proud doing Georgia on My Mind the way he did. I’ve opened 2 windows so I don’t have to go back and forth, and can see both windows at the same time next to each other. I shrink the size of each page to cut out all the extraneous space on the side margins to make room.

I have some pics of him that very clearly show it’s technically no longer Emo hair, but some sort of fauxhawk – there’s a long strip right up the center, front to back. Not like the beloved Emo hair from the show anymore. I like Emo vs Elvis better than Fauxhawk up vs Fauxhawk down, anyway.

Me too but this haircut has to be easier for him with the non-stop schedule he has. His hair tends to get curly as it gets longer so the Emo hair would be a mess at the end of each set and he would look like a Helmet Head.

Happy for Kris. Pleased that LR gave Adam the love he deserves.

I bet TPTB are wondering why the hell they didn’t schedule two concerts in Little Rock after hearing/seeing this craziness…they had 2 concerts in David Cook’s hometown alst year, right?

Holy crap, the reaction to Kris basically blew the roof off the arena and from what I could tell from the udnerground cell cast, he sounded great…and talked more than usual…and may have cried (I thought he was the non-crier in his family – LOL)

You would have to be born down there to understand the state rivalry of the sports teams, just ingrained from birth to cringe.

I was wondering the same thing, especially since the concert sold out in just 1 hour. There are two concerts in Long Island, for some reason.

For me, neither Kris or Adam overshadow the other. Both are talented, and both may not appeal to everyone. I think some of the fan bitterness and competition try to overshadow what they’ve achieved, or what they may achieve in the future, but that’s not on either Kris or Adam.

I’m so happy Kris got such an amazing reception in his hometown. I’ll bet this is an experience he will never forget–and the fact that his whole family was there with him must make it that much better. Good for Kris! The other idols sound really happy for him, too (at least the ones we’ve heard from).

It’s just an organized sports cheer…our version of the Gator Chomp,or the Tomahawk Chop, etc….. We are not really calling pigs, lol! As for why some people do it at non-sporting events…I can’t answer. I think it’s just a way to get the crowd fired up. (nothing like football to get a southern crowd going)

Me too. If he were more loveable, I think it would be illegal in several states.

Maybe the schedule didn’t allow a 2nd show to be added? They have another show tomorrow night, so if that was already scheduled, it would be impossible to add in another show, (at least without a 2nd trip back to AR…or AK.)

Evidently Adam said something about Kris right after he finished WLL…epic FAIL on the part of the cell cast after intermission…even Danny (whose set usually comes through clear on cell casts for some reason) sounded like he was scuba diving through most of his set tonight.

Nice that most of the other Idols mentioned Kris during their sets…this group really is very close and is fun to see how much they love each otehr.

Where I live there are 2 major SEC schools and you will hear the cheers for them any and everywhere. I’ve seen people pass each other in the airport, both with identifiable school colors but apparent strangers, nod and greet each other with a “War Eagle” (that’s for Auburn University)

LOL! As funny as that sounds, it may not be entirely impossible. AR (AK? ;- ) ) is a small state and he comes from a small town, so who knows? He could have called someone names in second grade.

It was bizarre being at the San Diego concert last week, I definitely got the feeling (from overhearing conversations in the women’s room, and the line to the women’s room ‘“ an ongoing experience there) that many people had first-. second- and third-degree separation from Adam.

Former teachers, moms of classmates, friends of friends … it was amazing. They were all so proud. It was extremely touching.

I am so glad we are in a closer time zone to me, it is much more enjoyable when not sleep deprived!

If I remember correctly, the tickets went on sale May 9th, so the schedule had to be planned well before that. At that time TPTB had no idea that Kris would be the winner. I am surprised that more than one night wasn’t scheduled in Milwaukee though.

If I remember correctly, the tickets went on sale May 9th, so the schedule had to be planned well before that. At that time TPTB had no idea that Kris would be the winner. I am surprised that more than one night wasn’t scheduled in Milwaukee though.

Well, there are two Wisconsin dates. One in Milwaukee and the other in Madison.

It’s just an organized sports cheer’ ¦our version of the Gator Chomp,or the Tomahawk Chop, etc’ ¦.. We are not really calling pigs, lol! As for why some people do it at non-sporting events’ ¦I can’t answer. I think it’s just a way to get the crowd fired up. (nothing like football to get a southern crowd going)

(which looks like a Russian Boar), thus the chant….It would be peculiar to someone unfamiliar with American football…and probably some who are .

- I got to hand it to AR. It has to be the greatest show since the winner came from their state.

Why would they schedule two shows in Milwaukee? They have one in Milwaukee and one in Madison that is 2 for the state. It’s unfortunate if I go to the concert it will be Milwaukee but I will try for Madison I think.

I think the ‘Calling the hogs’  thing was a great tribute Kris did for his beloved state. It was something that anyone from the state could relate to because come August, it is all you are going to hear when football season officially starts. Kris knows his people and how to get them going. I just hope Kris’s own college does not feel left out that Kris did not call the Razorbacks and the Bears. For those of you that don’t know Kris (Central Arkansas) and Katy (Univ of Arkansas) attended different schools. In Arkansas the University of Arkansas Razorbacks rule the sports world.

My thoughts exactly–who could possibly hate Kris? I’ve seen people say that about Adam too, and i don’t get it–whether or not you like these guys’ music, they are clearly two of the sweetest people imaginable, and they care about each other a lot.

If Kris was amazed at his homecoming, I can only imagine what tonight must have been like for him. It would feel weirdly motherish to say I’m proud of him, but I’m just so happy for him. Sarver said that he would post a video of Kris’s intro and the applause, and hopefully we’ll have lots more videos after that.

ok – I’ve just proved my geography skills for that area aren’t that great :surprised_tb: But they were sneaky on the two dates in Wisconsin – the schedule is Milwaukee, St. Louis, Kansas City, Minneapolis, then Rosemont, and Madison – so they’re going back :biggrin_wp:

That was a really interesting read, thank you for posting. Collins is apparently the right kind of Christian–the Kris Allen kind of Christian, if you will. As a Christian, I find people like Kris and this author so comforting and inspirational because so often it can seem like the public face of Christianity is more in tune with the author’s idiot friend.

That is disappointing that Kris can’t stay and celebrate with his family, but I remember that Adam’s mom said that she would be meeting up with the Allens at one of the upcoming concerts, so they will be around to celebrate with him then.

I like how Sarver is now Adam’s messenger (since Matt did not step up to the plate!) Who needs Adam’s tweets anyway when we have Sarver? And can he get a paid position when the tour is over?

And there are 2 shows in Long Island (and 2 in NJ) because metro NY is a huge area, much more than 3 times Little Rock (no offense to LR).

For Adam, I think the L.A. concert was mind blowing as we here in SoCal are so blaze to stars and he received a star’s welcome.

San Diego had to be a different as he grew up there but was the outcast, the “different” kid. I don’t think Kris has those types of memories from his home town.

Mike Collin’s friend is very cynical. I loved when he said if every sin was a splinter he would be able to build a subdivision. How very true for all of us. I am so happy for all the idols. But…..Adam is still my fav.

Madison has a really different vibe from Milwaukee. (College town, kinda crunchy, smaller, not as much of a standard old Midwest city like Milwaukee, St Louis and Chicago.) Lots of beer and cheese and bratwurst, of course, but because it’s Madison, a lot of vegans and granola types, too. It may be Gokey Territory, or it may not. (No “hooey,” either. Look for Bucky Badger instead.)

I do know one Gokey fan in the Chicago suburbs, and several other people who are Kris and Adam fans. None of those folks are attenting the concert, though. My best guess is that the Chicago surburban concert (it’s in Rosemont, right? Not United Center?) will be the same mix as anywhere else.

I have now been to my first American Idol concert. I have nothing to compare it to but I believe it must have been one of the more emotional concerts in Idol Tour history. I’ll put together a coherent review after I attend tomorrow’s concert. All I can think about now are the Kris and Adam parts of the concert. The rest is a blur except I am so glad that I am seeing the Memphis concert tomorrow.

But just a few quick comments:

1. It was a Kris-Kris-Kris crowd but there were a number of Adam fans, and a few Anoop fans wearing UNC shirts. The crowd was so pumped up for this concert and great to everyone. Adam got a great response, Kris got much bigger yells, screams, chants, and general noise, of course.

2. I saw Adam and Kris live in NY in late May. I saw Adam perform Mad World live already, and I have watched a lot of video performances. Neither prepared me for how great he is live in concert. I just don’t have the words. And even Kris fans near me were blown away by his performance.

3. Kris was really emotional. I couldn’t tell if he cried, but he was at least close to tears. The crowd roared for him. It was so loud that my ears are still ringing a bit.

4. I am from Mississippi and attended the concert with 5 other Mississippians. The only thing that we did not like about the concert was the Hog Call. Sorry, there is no way I am ever rooting for Arkansas. Not ever happening!! There were a number of LSU fans near us who also did not join in.

Now, other parts of the US are football crazy — Penn State, Nebraska, etc. But nothing is like the SEC. For the whole concert the Kris fans got along really well with the Adam fans, it was a very Kris-Kradam crowd and I saw no signs of any fanwar tonight. But even the most heated Idol fanwar isn’t anything compared to an SEC rivalry. And when we didn’t join in with that Hog Call, a guy behind me got so mad that he turned a bit red!

We made peace with him later, our groups ended up having drinks together after the show and 4 of them are coming over to Mississippi to our tailgating party in the Fall when Old Miss (University of Mississippi) once again beats Arkansas! (a girl can hope!) And they have promised to cheer the “Hotty Toddy” to prove they are more open-minded than us.

It is a real honor for Arkansas fans to get invited to tailgate at Ole Miss. Usually the “enemy” is not involved. And tailgating at Old Miss is a big event. An endless sea of tents cover The Grove – 10 acres of lawn with huge trees. 25,000 people start gathering at 5AM. Men in jacket and tie; women in cocktail dresses and high heel shoes. Fine china, silver, candlelabras, and lines. Gourmet food, BBQ and the best Southern food you’ve ever eaten. Some people even have formal waitstaff and hired BBQ chefs. And an endless supply of adult beverages.

I met a ton of great people here today. One group of fans from Louisiana who were seated near us are also headed over to Memphis to see the show. We are both staying at the Peobody Hotel so we plan to meet over there tomorrow afternoon.

Finally, this was one of the most fun concerts I ever attended. So, if you are sitting on the fence about getting a ticket, don’t delay, just buy it.

No, he was telling people that after the Memphis concert they are immediately flying to Tampa so no M&G after the buses Sun. night.

@Q3 – I perfectly understand both 2 & 4. Live is unworldly and even though I now live in SoCal but from Louisiana there is no way in hell I would ever root for Arkansas and I stated that earlier. Ya just gotta be from the SEC to understand (but I have a soft spot for Ole Miss cause I knew Archie Manning growing up).

For the whole concert the Kris fans got along really well with the Adam fans, it was a very Kris-Kradam crowd and I saw no signs of any fanwar tonight. But even the most heated Idol fanwar isn’t anything compared to an SEC rivalry. And when we didn’t join in with that Hog Call, a guy behind me got so mad that he turned a bit red!

We made peace with him later, our groups ended up having drinks together after the show and 4 of them are coming over to Mississippi to our tailgating party in the Fall when Old Miss (University of Mississippi) once again beats Arkansas! (a girl can hope!) And they have promised to cheer the ‘Hotty Toddy’  to prove they are more open-minded than us.

It is a real honor for Arkansas fans to get invited to tailgate at Ole Miss. Usually the ‘enemy’  is not involved. And tailgating at Old Miss is a big event. An endless sea of tents cover The Grove – 10 acres of lawn with huge trees. 25,000 people start gathering at 5AM. Men in jacket and tie; women in cocktail dresses and high heel shoes. Fine china, silver, candlelabras, and lines. Gourmet food, BBQ and the best Southern food you’ve ever eaten. Some people even have formal waitstaff and hired BBQ chefs. And an endless supply of adult beverages.

You are excused from the Hog Call! The Grove is Legend in the SEC, that would indeed be awesome to tailgate with you guys! The hospitality of Ole Miss fans is great. I can’t say the same for Adamland’s native country….Death Valley has “a-whole-nother” reputation! Lol!

I’m from the Midwest, but my brother went to Ole Miss (to golf) and he and his family now live in Memphis, however his daughter — my niece — is currently a cheerleader at Ole Miss so it was fun to hear your Arkansas/Ole Miss story in your partial recap.

I’ve been trying to get to an Ole Miss game for two years now to see her cheer, but it just hasn’t worked out yet. Need to get on that before she graduates!

Q3: thanks for your brief recap. I’ll be interested to see what the differences are between AR and Memphis (if any). Also your description of tailgating and the food makes me want to move to the south. LOL.

Today, we had a live chat on stream with the band and Adam was there. I knew because I follow Aaron Spears the drummer and he sent a tweet. It was a spare of the moment and they got 1000 people quick to chat with them. I find it very exciting because we got to ask the band members questions directly and know a little bit about them once Adam left. They will have guests and this new show is named “MFB”. They will have it regularly on tour, I believe and the next one is tomorrow.

TIN HATS:
The idea of a “tin hat” has to do with conspiracy theories (like the people who wear tinfoil hats to keep out alien radiation rays–a little crazy). If someone says they are going to “put their tin hat on” it usually means they are going to state a theory that may sound crazy to others. For example, “I just know that Kris and Adam really have a thing going on” = tin hat (or wishful thinking). Most of the time it seems to be all in fun, but sometimes I do wonder!

A bunch of people seem to have now made icons on some other sites with idols and others wearing tin hats (funnels, really) and don’t seem to change them at all. Maybe they’re always crazy, but it’s most likely that they like their icon and just don’t feel like changing it. That’s my tin hat theory, at least… :wink1_tb:

@kokoki (the band member who does the live chat) is the guy responsible for all the idols’ intros on the big screen.. I recall some people negatively commenting on some of the intros.. he would be the person to give feedback to about it.

What an unbelievable night! I am so happy for Kris he deserves this so much. He has truly captured the hearts of all Arkansans and it shows. I can’t remember another idol ever getting that type of reaction through all the years this little talent show has been around.

The Q3 Southern Idol Mini Tour continues later today in Memphis. The biggest topic of discussion among the Adam fans following the concert last night (after being happy for Kris) was, “Will HE have Elvis hair in Memphis?”

Also to my LSU friends, yes, I agree — Death Valley is in a class of its own. I’m not even sure if tailgating is a proper word for it. Also Tennessee is amazing – I went one time to a Tenn-Ark game tailgate and the Volunteer Army had quite a number of pig roasts for the pre-game celebration.

I promise to write a real recap and not write anything else about SEC football. And all kidding aside, I really hope someone videos this part of the concert. Kris’ speach and the cheer were really amazing.

It’s good to see Arkansas show so much love for Kris last night with Kris returning to AR like a conquering hero. I think this was the affirmation Kris needed to solidify in his mind that he is truly the AI Season 8 Champion. There is no better place to get that than home. The Arkansas fans were determined to make it a night to remember for Kris but I think they made it a night for all the idols. All of the idols received a lot of love from the crowd. ‘Epic’  is the proper word to describe what so many have witnessed. A made for TV moment. Oh, I forgot, it was not on TV. I wonder who would play Kris in the Lifetime movie.
On another note, I know of a lot of AR folks going to Memphis tonight to see the show. It won’t have the same emotional impact as last night but I think Kris will have a lot of fans there also. I hope Kris gives a shout out to Lil’ Rounds on her home turf. Oh geez back to the football analogies and the season hasn’t started yet.

I’m so happy for Kris’s amazing reception, he totally deserves this and much more, and I love that the Arkansa crowd made this a night to remember for all the Idols.

Highlights from review:

If fame has changed Allen, it isn’t yet apparent in his wardrobe. Dressed in black jeans, a plaid shirt and sneakers, the celebrated singer looked like the same University of Central Arkansas student that he was a year ago at this time as he alternated between plugged and unplugged guitars and the piano on songs that ranged from a moving ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’  to a participatory ‘Hey Jude.’  Notably missing was Allen’s sappy Idol coronation single ‘No Boundaries’  that appeared on earlier tour set lists, killed for a dynamic rendition of The Killers’ ‘All These Things That I’ve Done.’ 

His unassuming set was quite the contrast from Adam Lambert, the glam rocker in guy-shadow who preceded Allen as Idol’s runner up. He wowed with his wailing during a robust ‘Whole Lotta Love’  and a kinetic David Bowie medley. The night’s most magical music moment was Lambert’s masterful ‘Slow Ride’  duet with fourth-place finisher and powerhouse Allison Iraheta who showed seasoning well beyond her 17 years.

I agree. It is mostly about the pro-games: football, basketball, baseball and hockey, because there are six pro-teams within a fifty-mile radius.

Oh, and just to put in my 2 cents that I really love the Cover it Live addition! It was hard catching up on the tweets after the fact in the comments, but seeing them all stream live is great

My favorite Bowie Medley of Adam is in Glendale Arizona. It’s the one where he says “I wanna see you dance, biitches…ha ha” The way he says “ha ha” is so funny. Funny and Hot.

here’s very short review of last night’s Idol show from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (it costs $1.95 to purchase this full article)

Highlights from review:

If fame has changed Allen, it isn’t yet apparent in his wardrobe. Dressed in black jeans, a plaid shirt and sneakers, the celebrated singer looked like the same University of Central Arkansas student that he was a year ago at this time as he alternated between plugged and unplugged guitars and the piano on songs that ranged from a moving ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’  to a participatory ‘Hey Jude.’  Notably missing was Allen’s sappy Idol coronation single ‘No Boundaries’  that appeared on earlier tour set lists, killed for a dynamic rendition of The Killers’ ‘All These Things That I’ve Done.’ 

His unassuming set was quite the contrast from Adam Lambert, the glam rocker in guy-shadow who preceded Allen as Idol’s runner up. He wowed with his wailing during a robust ‘Whole Lotta Love’  and a kinetic David Bowie medley. The night’s most magical music moment was Lambert’s masterful ‘Slow Ride’  duet with fourth-place finisher and powerhouse Allison Iraheta who showed seasoning well beyond her 17 years.

It is definitely bookmarked. I came back to this thread to (again) figure out how to convert from YouTube to MP3. I know Sunn left directions, I just couldn’t do them from my phone where I was reading at the time.

It’s fascinating to see the big screen. I never paid much attention to it during the concerts because I had great seats, but you can really see Adam’s facial expressions. Let’s just say he’s very expressive and he didn’t hold back for Little Rock. ;P

Has anyone noticed that starting with Ontario Allison has cut the ending of Cry Baby? (about 20 seconds). It seems by the audience reaction at the most recent venues that nobody seems to mind.

However, being a “Joplin freak” I really love her full up version. Check out the studio recording or any concert from Portland to Staples.

Well, if the reason is to save her voice, I’m all for it. However, if the reason is to “tighten the show,” or anything like that, then I’m disappointed.

Also, has anybody noticed that in the last couple concerts Adam has not gone for his high note in Slow Ride?

I am seriously choked up just listening to the deafening roar of appreciation when Kris Allen took the stage in Little Rock. Thanks so much for posting the videos. He sounded just phenomenal. What a wonderful experience for him. Arkansas just went up miles in my private public opinioin poll by their loyalty and support for one of their own. Just fantastic. Of course he belongs to all of us now and I hope he experiences this kind of applause everywhere he goes. So happy for him.

ShariG, ditto your comments! Everyone should be able to experience something like that once in their life. To witness it when you genuinely appreciate the person is getting close but not the same. But it still feels good! Thanks for the emotional high Kris and Arkansas!
