*Watch this space for updates*

The American Idol 9 Top 10 are speaking with the press out in Los Angeles today. There will be tons of interviews and photos coming, so watch out.

The kids performed an acoustic version of their group number for the press. This year, they’re singing “My Life Would Suck Without You” by Kelly Clarkson.   I like that…keeping it in the family!

4th Update: Adding Zap2it.com video, Lee DeWyze and Andrew Garcia interview (read more).  Short Katie clip (read more)

3rd Update: From Zap2it.com – Embedded longer video after the jump. The Idols did two takes of MLWSWY.

There was some confusion over where everyone would stand for the impromptu performance. Everyone wanted to stand next to Siobhan Magnus, but in the end, Lee DeWyze got the honor. (We guess there are some benefits to being the “American Idol” winner, though everyone swears he gets treated the same as the rest of them.)

2nd UPDATE: I have two versions of  “My Life Would Suck Without You” after the jump.  Check out Lyndsey Parker’s take HERE.  Plus, a little snip of the Idols goofing around on “Blister in the Sun”

The kids certainly need more rehearsal, but I remember last year’s “Don’t Stop Believing”, sung with only piano accompaniment, also being a little rough around the edges.

UPDATE: Added interview with Good Day LA

Aw cute! How very Glee of them ;) Looking forward to updates MJ! Thanks for posting.

Every time I see Aaron Kelly I think “Man, why didn’t you wait a few years?” I think he would’ve killed on AI with just a little more experience and time to grow up and work out his own style, plus live a little.

  • rayni

I don’t think I realized Katie is so tiny! I go by relative height – Ryan is shorter than me, Aaron is shorter than Ryan, Katie (and Crystal) are shorter than Aaron. They must just be at 5′. Random, I know.

  • Mariam94

I like that I’m starting to see alot more personality from these kids, now that the show is over.

Little Aaron taking off his shirt and doing Bootylicious, now that’s gonna give this tour some spark ;)

  • BootStar

I hope Casey gets to play guitar on those group numbers. (That photo at the top is promising.) Don’t need to EVER see him dance again (unless it’s with Crystal ;-) ), and the more we get to see and hear him play, the better, as far as I’m concerned.

  • Pam

I love when we get to this point where the show is over and we get to see their sense of humor come to the surface. Awesome. :)

Sounds like Aaron is going to liven up the tour. heh

  • windmills

I think it’s kind of cute how Lee tried to be all spokesmanlike after all the goofing off even while joining in the goofing off.

I LOVE Crystal’s joke about their opening act. Cute and hilarious!

I hope they all have a great time on tour.

  • JudyL

Katie is very annoying. She was such a camera hog in that Good Day La video.

  • http://myspace.com hgzaj

This is what they’re doing for the group song? meh

should do something more fun or with solos

  • springboard

    Yep, definitely something more fun!

  • wjmtv

What would be more fun than MLWSWY? Stars & Stripes Forever?

    hahahahahah

  • BootStar

Did Andrew say he was married and then later say they’d fly out his “son and girlfriend”? Alrighty then!

  • Liva

I may be cranky today, but are a few of them trying too hard to be clever and funny? Crystal, Lee and Casey, to be terribly predictable, are natural communicators and do a wonderful job representin’. I listen when they speak, but find I kinda tune out some of the rest.

Der. Just noticed the vid… They do well to balance all the strong voices, don’t they? Sounds good to me so far!

  • alxsavage

This song is such a guilty pleasure, just like idol!

  • whatever4444

Lee really likes to ramble. Get to the point dude stat!

  • TwigLA

I think they need a little more rehearsal on that group number. :)

Interview was cute and they all were pretty animated.

  • OvenMitt

I guess that explains why they’re the top 3 and the others, erm, aren’t.;)

  • Liva

With you there, ‘Mitt. To my mind, these three are worth the price of admission and then some.

  • AIaddict

sweet! mini idols on tour! I am looking forward to the tour videos for a month before my time to see them live early August.

They’re why I’m going for the first time. The rest will have some fun moments, I’m sure, but the Top 3 are it as far as I’m concerned. Even if the other 7 didn’t show, I’d still feel I got my money’s worth.

  • OvenMitt

    Liva,

I said long ago that they’d be awesome together in just a huge, laid-back jam-style concert. Before they ended up the top 3. They all seem much more relaxed and confident musically, IMO.

  • Liva

They’re why I’m going for the first time.

Did you know you’re required to be least one person’s eyes and ears at the show? With homework afterward, detailing the experience?

You’ve got good instincts and taste. Are you going to the concert?

The good news is that this time my daughter and her 3G phone are coming with me, so I should have a battery that lasts longer than 45 minutes. W00t!

  • Liva

So children really do come in handy sometimes!

ETA – Thanks, in advance, from a peep at the interblog!

  • glamertitis

Katie must be hanging around with Siobhan… her talking speed has slowed by half ;)
Listening to that group performance was painful

What happened to the “tons of photos and interviews”?

The press conference only ended a few hours ago. It will take days for everything to roll out.

  • Mariam94

Funny thing, the most lack-luster season of American Idol is gonna be the first Idol concert I’m going to.

To tell you the truth, I’m going for Lee, but also wanna hear Casey, Crystal and Didi. Witnessing Siobhan’s power note in person would be pretty awesome too :D All the other Idols, for me, are just decoration. But maybe they’ll impress me during tour!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Actually, I think most of the FAIL of Season 9 had to do with these kids as television personalities.

Away from the cameras and performing on stage, I am expecting to be entertained by the concert.

  • poster

Lee looks tired and like he hasn’t had time to get a haircut. I think Siobhan is going to be fantastic on tour, along with Lee, Crystal and Casey. Hoping for some surprises, though.

  • Mariam94

I’m hoping these kids will put on a show too. Are you going to the tour mj?

Lee looks tired and like he hasn’t had time to get a haircut.

I agree. Hope he gets plenty of rest. The last interview I saw of him he looked sick.

    Lyndsey Parker:
Footage from today’s Idol tour press day. Looks like it’s going to be a mellow show. Is that a good or bad thing? http://yhoo.it/8YCW6d

  • Liva

Actually, I think most of the FAIL of Season 9 had to do with these kids as television personalities.

It’s probably why I enjoyed the Top 3 so much. Contrary, I know.

  • LVD

I liked Casey’s guitar playing on blister in the sun.

  • OvenMitt

    Liva,
Yes, I am going to the concert. I was actually just hopping around the web trying to find the closest seats for the cheapest price! Lots of people seem a bit worried about how mellow the concert will be this year, but I personally love that idea. Last year got a bit too OTT for me, and I actually left early to get a good barricade spot. I think this year will be more my “thing”, mellow with lots of great guitar and melodies, less stroke strobes and smoke machines.

  • Tess

Oh my God…my life is now complete. I just heard 10 guys who spent months singing to millions of peeps sounding like high school students trying out for their glee club. Nope…my life WOULDN’T suck without you if the you were the Season 9 idols. I only lasted half of the minute 15 before my poor ears couldn’t take anymore…and I liked this song when Kelly sung it. I had no idea they were that bad!

  • Nina1

Away from the cameras and performing on stage, I am expecting to be entertained by the concert.

Yep. Me, too. In fact, I suspect it may be substantially better than in other years. I do want Casey playing electric guitar, however.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ CindyM

Were Access Hollywood, Extra, ET and those shows at the media thing today? I know they were last year, don’t know about season 7. I hope the concerts sell, but this discounting of tickets and press meme that’s going around about it being a poor seller won’t help. The only one that interests me is Crystal and I wouldn’t travel to see her, but I may buy her album when it comes out.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

When I click on “Lyndsey Parker’s take here” – it says Forbidden!

    I fixed the link.

  • iluvai

I had no idea they were that bad!

ewww… That was cringe worthy. Their voices didn’t blend very well.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ CindyM

OUCH. I don’t like that version of “My Life Would Suck Without You” at all. It’s early though and just rehearsal, I’m sure they’ll get better. Then again, that’s what I thought about the contestants all season and except for a few it never happened.

  • Dlynne

The Today LA segment was fun to watch. Thanks, MJ!

I don’t mind the song they’re singing but it does need a little more work. It should be interesting to see if Lyndsey Parker’s “mellow” assessment is true.

  • blmetsfan

Well, now I know why they lipped the group songs during the show. That was….awful!

  • wjmtv

I think mellow would be great. Feeding frenzies aren’t my thing.

ETA: Hmmm….just noticed one of the pictures at the top. Katie and Timmeh sittin’ in a tree……

  • Esqt

They just need some practice. Their voices do blend well like milkshakes and I like it. They’re more like church choir than Gleeks wannabe because of the acoustic. Many love that mellow, laid back feel so they’ll be fine. I loved reading concert reviews here last summer, so I’m looking forward for another fun reads in weeks to come.

  • Tess

Their voices didn’t blend very well.

I have always been impressed when a great solo singer can lend his/her voice to duet or trio or group number and the whole is equal to the greatness of its parts. To me this is the mark of a true pro…blending their voice to compliment someone elses.

On the Season 9 group song I could really hear 10 different voices…and that doesn’t say a lot about their ability to work as a team.

  • sr4mjc

It was like a bunch of questions, LOL. My Life? Would Suck? Without? You..

Timmeh’s looking pretty good in that shirt though ;)

  • MaryS-NJ

Actually, I think most of the FAIL of Season 9 had to do with these kids as television personalities.

Oddly enough, I’m just as excited to go this season as I was last season. I like most of this Top 10, especially Casey and Crystal.

I hate the title “My Life Would Suck Without You (U?)” but the song is catchy. I think these kids will pull it together by July 1.

I recall last season they had a piano or two to accompany the Top 10 on “Don’t Stop Believing”. As much as I love listening to Casey’s guitar, and I do LOVE listening to Casey’s guitar, it’s not quite the BIG sound that a couple pianos can make. Do they have the band to back them up?

  • whatever4444

I think they need to close Mike’s mic because he is the one ruining the harmony. I don’t know why he is extending the words so much if he is struggling to hit the note! The other guys are keeping it low key which is better because the song is too high for them. The girls are doing a great job with the harmony and I expected them to do so since it’s a song designed for a girl.

Overall it’s a not a train wreck like last year. The idols forgot words. Didn’t know when to start their parts. Very scary. Even the live show never was spot on.

  • http://none SueSt

loved the vid of Lee and Andrew together.. they have such an easy friendship… fun to watch. thanks for posting!

I totally agree with this, whatever. His voice is definitely the one that stands out as the “off” voice. Unfortunately, he doesn’t strike me as the type who can/will tone it down.

  • S0n0fLucy

MLWSWY was awful >”<. They should sing "Keepin' the dream alive" like in Top 7 night. It's a not well-known but great song like "Don't stop believing". It has some BIG notes for Crystal and Siobhan, too.
Oh and I feel sorry for Siobhan's bf.

  • Truthiness

Well those numbers certainly put the suck back in My Life Would Suck Without You.

Oy to the vey. That was baaaaaaaaaaad.

The interview was kind of cute though.

Maybe they won’t suck as much singing with more practice.

    Maybe.

  • mcgr45

If I haven’t said it before-thanks MJ for all the work you do every season to get this stuff up on your blog. :)

The “zap2it” video of all of them singing MLWSWY was definitely better, then the “yahoo” video. Their voices blended much better the 2nd time. They have a couple of more weeks to work it out, I am sure by then it will sound even better. I suspect that they will have the band accompanying them, and they will have some choreography (or at least they will move a little on the stage, but we do not need jumping around, not wanting or expecting that). They are only doing 2 group numbers, which was a good decision. Most of us are going to hear them sing as individuals-and hopefully really see what type of artists they are trying to become!! Cheers:):)

  • RMK

Wow, that was pretty boring. I guess it is only practice.

  • Cyndee

This is a rehearsal … it was warned to be rough … and I thought it was great that we could be a part of the process! Keep ‘em coming, Mr. Rushfield … and MJ … love it! Further, I am enjoying this GROUP so much more than last year. They look like one big happy family … no one is break out big (like Adam last year) … and they all just seem to truly like each other. Love the banter about the ‘baby band.’ Looking forward to the tour this year!

  • brewster

Aaron Kelly looks like the banjo playing kid in Deliverance.

  • CRB

I’m not a fan of any song with Suck in the title but that sounded pretty good. Remind me again why they have to lip sync the group numbers on the show?
