American Idol XIII Top 31 Contestant #9

BristonMaroney-top31

I’ll be posting several American Idol Top 31 contestants previews every day in the run up to the American Idol XIII premiere on January 15.

Click for the FULL list of the American Idol XIII Top 31

Briston Maroney is only a high school student, but as a musician, he’s somewhat of a veteran, having been a member of a band called Subtle Clutch since he was in middle school.

The 4 person Knoxville, Tennessee, outfit sings Mumfordy-type folk music and have already put out a single titled “Railroad” on iTunes.

A local Knoxville blogger who just happened to come across them while they were busking in a park, was so impressed with the quartet, he ran back to his home to grab his camera to capture a performance.

Check out the bands Facebook and Youtube channel. I’ll post a few of their performances below.

But, of course, Briston is competing on Idol as a solo artist. His twitter feed reveals a bunch of retweets of a girl named Laura who is apparently his girlfriend. There’s a real cute series of photos that obviously went down when Briston found out he made the Top 31. She tweeted on Dec 21, so the dates line up. You can find more cute photos on Instagram.

ADORBS. No doubt, Laura will be in the audience cheering Briston on if he advances to the finals.

Here are those performances:

  • Mike

This is kid is the winner. Mark my words. Felt the same way about Phil Phillips around this time.

  • iluvai

    I don’t like his voice.

  • Sicola789

He is only 15, but I love that he has such a strong vision of what kind of artist he is. I also like that he doesn’t want to be the “next Bieber” or the “next One Direction,” and instead wants to make folky music. Someone on another site mention he is kind of like a young Casey Abrams and I can see that.

  • macfae

this young man is obviously talented and could go far in the competition but I hate that he is so young,. And I wonder how he will cope with different genres. But I’ll keep an eye on what he does.

  • maymay

I enjoy his unique tone, especially on “Gotta Travel On.” I can see he is being an artist. His teen band could be his advantage post show. Even they can perforn once on Idol to create a lot buzz. They look so cute and talented.

Phillip`s success definately impacts this season with folk trend. But if a folk singer has no commerical single, he/she goes nowhere.

  • Kariann Hart

Mike, I can see him on the Idol tour. Winner? Not sure, but he has a lot going for himself

  • ladymctech

I was just going to say…Phillip Phillips 2.0.

  • Amy Beth

I thought the minimum age on Idol was 16.

I have visions of this kid’s voice changing a la Peter Brady.

  • Blirel

His voice is a bit shaky i just don’t know he has potential but i have to see him on idol of how he does and then that will tell me

  • justmefornow

Yeah, another WGWG that sings the type of music I have no interest in. And his voice is terrible on top of that. I’m starting to get a bad feeling about the boredom level of this season.
    Hope I’m wrong.

  • Tess Herself

Doesn’t Disney have a place for these kids….the last thing I want to watch is a half-baked kid trying to sing serious folk music. You need some experience under your belt to make that genre work….but then he could always sing Puff the Magic Dragon.

  • dd999

I’m not liking his singing that much but maybe with a full band behind him, he’ll sound much better. I don’t think he has the feel for music built into him the way Phil Phillips has.

  • iani

but I love that he has such a strong vision of what kind of artist he is.

I like this kid. Musical extraordinaire? No! But I look at them, all four as a band, and I like they take the music seriously, no gimmicky elements involved in, jamming on their instruments pretty harmoniously… From pictures and videos he’s a 15 yo one behaving like a 25, maturely. As for the voice, I don’t think there would be a major change over the years, Jake Bugg for example, a 19 yo with no voice change in the last 2 years, a voice like coming from a 14 yo kid that sells out tours in US and Canada of about 2k capacity with almost no music on radio or career longevity. Even though I don’t like contestants so young, I think Briston is ready to have a chance as AI contender. Good look to him and hope good things for his band too!

  • helo23

OK….Briston is like a mini/ young P2. Looks like him also, so he has that going for him. And P2 is already young. Ha. Bristin seems to have a better voice than Phillips, also. Yep. Possible winner.

  • Tinawina

If it’s not him, i will be someone similar. Everything will revert back to form regardless.

  • Larc

I agree. It’s like fingernails on a blackboard. Can’t believe he made it to Top 31 without significant improvement.

  • No Thanks

So true. He’s the type of contestant that is like catnip to AI’s conservative base. White, southern, plays guitar, cute, enjoys old music….Tweens and their mothers will whip themselves into a frenzy over this one.

  • Incipit

Trying to catch up on this last week of previews for Idol – starting with #9 and the Dylan track. And, never mind. This child has a highly annoying vocal; breath control is nil so it comes out nasal – the ending notes are flat and the whole thing sounds like a 1930′s audio recording without even using a sound effects mic. The ratio of the age discrepancy to the songs’ subject matter mean I don’t believe he understands a single word he’s singing – which makes it a waste of time for me. It’s a pretty child, that may buy him something that the vocals and the delivery cannot. On to #8.

  • Mike

I disagree with everything u said. Plus I think it’s refreshing to see a young kid sing older songs like Bob Dylan. What do you want him to do, sing only songs about cute girls like Bieber at this age? C’mon now

  • Mike

I think they moved in down to 15 a couple years ago cuz of Bieber

  • Sicola789

Well what kind of music are you interested in? It seems to be very small lol.

Name some genres you like and I might be able to point you towards some contestants this year you may be interested in.

  • Sicola789

The male singers with the raspy voices always seem to be polarizing. See Phillip Phillips, lol.

  • justmefornow

I’m primarily a Rock fan. Hard Rock towards Metal mostly. Punk Rock sometimes as well. For me once a banjo enters into the picture, I’m outta there, lol.

There was one guy this year who had a punk rock leaning sound that someone posted a video of here recently, but apparently he didn’t make it to the top 30. He’s the only one so far that I’ve seen anything on that I be interested in.

  • Incipit

Mike, I’m listening to how he sings more than what he sings – since I don’t like his vocals the rest is academic. I don’t like to listen to ‘anyone’ who makes it clear they don’t understand what they are singing about, regardless of age – but a fifteen yr old trying to understand and/or convey the weariness and acceptance in “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” just doesn’t work for me.

You’re the one bringing up Bieber for your False Dichotomy – all of these Very Young People on Idol are inappropriate, IMO. I wish they hadn’t lowered the age limit…not good.

    JMO. Of Course.

  • justmefornow

Therein lies the main problem as far as I’m concerned. The minimum age for this show should be 18,
No tutors, curfews or stage Moms allowed.
    JMO.

  • Sicola789

Jordin and Scotty both won when they were under 18, and I don’t think they made a negative impact on the show. I also don’t think the instant fame has scarred them. They are both level-headed today. I think if someone is ready, then they are ready.

  • Sicola789

There are a few legit rocker chicks this season, but I will let MJ post them first so we don’t go off topic in this thread :)

  • justmefornow

Sounds good. Things may be looking up.

  • justmefornow

Regardless, I still feel they shouldn’t have been on the show til 18. If they were meant to win, they would have just won at a slightly older age.
I myself would never allow my kids on any of these shows until they had at least finished their education. JMO.

  • Mateja Praznik

16 is okay. After all, the show likes to discover teen Idols more than 25+ struggling musicians.

The idea window is 18-22, tho.

  • Anny_nanny

    Baby, shut up.

  • Mike

You’re also assuming he doesn’t know what he is singing about. Age is just a number after all. Singers are storytellers and even if something doesn’t affect the singer they still can understand it and convey the message.

  • tomr

He can play but the voice doesn’t do it for me.

  • Bob Dylan

This kid is a diamond in the rough. If I am not mistaking I read that he wrote the “Railroad” song that these boys perform. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

    His original song Railload

    Band member:
Vocals and Guitar – Briston Maroney
    Vocals – Devin Badgett
Banjo and Harmonica – Eli Fox
    Mandolin – Jonathan Bailey

    Lyrics:
    Check it out
    Growing old is growing old
You toss me so many questions but I
Can never seem to get a hold
    What is right
    But tonight
    We just might disagree

What we talked about in future generations
So if you don’t mind just leave me at the station

    Now we’ve come so far
Knowing nothing of who we are
And how many steps I might be takin’
How many hearts I might be breakin’
And I just want to get home
On the railroad on on the railroad

    Check you out
All prettied up to make a stand
I don’t know why you always press
Cause I never ask for nothing
    And until now
    Oh somehow
    We just might disagree

What we thought about in future generations
So if you don’t mind just leave me at the station

    Now we’ve come so far
Knowing nothing of who we are
And how many steps I might be takin’
How many hearts I might be breakin’
And I just want to get home
On the railroad on on the railroad
On the railroad on on the railroad

  • Jcasa12

    winner!XP

  • Miles (Grumpy) (VI)

Umm….no. Maybe in a year or two unless these are old videos.

  • Thescoutgrl

I also think he is the winner right now. But only if he doesnt mess and if they dont pimp him to the max or if miracousloly someone rises once on tv or the live shows.
