MK Nobilette was shown briefly during the San Francisco auditions, part of a montage of hopefuls. The 20 year old student’s passionate a cappella rendition of Gladys Knight’s “If I Were Your Woman” got her through to Hollywood.
The singer, who also performs with the stage name, Emkay Brazil, explained why she came to American Idol with a “really unique style” that’s “a lot different from a lot of other people.”
She further explains that she doesn’t “look like someone who sings like I sing,” Indeed, MK’s tomboy style could could set people to speculate about her sexuality. But there’s not much to gossip about. She’s an out and proud lesbian, with a girlfriend who named Casey Ellis who refers to MK as her wife, and isn’t shy about supporting her girl on social media.
The only reason I think this is important, is that it will be interesting to see if the new producers encourage contestants to be completely open about who they are in every way. Will MK talk about her girlfriend in video packages and in interviews? It would be a first for Idol.
In her “Road To Hollywood” interview, MK reveals that her Aunt Betsy, who loves the show, encouraged her to audition for the show. “What have you got to lose?” said her aunt.
Although Jennifer Lopez said no to her audition, MK ain’t mad. She says she also got a lot of constructive criticism from the judge that she plans to incorporate as she moves on. MK describes her “lower set voice” as “raspy” and “soulful” and hopes to bring something new to the competition.
The Little Mermaid and singer/songwriter, Allen Stone, are musical inspirations.
