I expect Alex Preston will go far in the competition.

  • Blirel

I can see alex and jillian and maurice go far because they r unique with great voices but emmanuel probably will make top 30 but he will get cut after and leah is great but i think she will get cut because she isn’t that unique

  • Seikou Kaba

I really…really just don’t like Emmanuel. Every performance I’ve seen of him has been 1-800-TOO-DAMN-MUCH. And that purring thing….quoi?

  • johnkay

As much as I want to hate emmanuel, he killed that

  • Miz

He’s ready to be out recording now. I wonder how he’ll do on covers though.

  • Miz

Jillian Jenson just turns me off and I can’t quite put my finger on why.

  • macfae

I expect that Alex will have to flip everything. So I think he will be interesting to watch.
I haven’t really paid much attention to him because his facial expressions bug me. But if he continues to perform like that, who cares.

  • tomr

    Love Leah’s tone!

  • Shawn Jang

Maybe because every time she sings, it looks like she’ll burst into tears at any second?

  • vd88

I know right, something’s off with her like everything is so serious like girl enjoy yourself. lol

  • Miz

Yeah, there is something really fake about her.

  • Miz

The people who vote for their next boyfriend will care about the way he looks.

  • Mafs95

I don’t see that and honestly I don’t know what did she say or do that could make her seem fake. Maybe the fact she’s not smiling all the time? She may not be like Tiquila, but we don’t know her to say something like “she seems fake”. That’s just my opinion, though.

We should evaluate her by her performances and her artistry just like we should do with any other contestant. Things like trying to guess who’s fake and who’s not are really out of our knowledge and it doesn’t seem to be a fair way to judge these contestants, tbh. Again, just my opinion.

  • Mafs95

Emanuel seems to calm down a little bit but he actually sounded pretty nice in this performance. I thought he would be a terrible contestant because of his Youtube videos but he’s actually not bad… just a bit OTT

  • Adrian Sewell

I think Emmanuel had a good performance in this performace. Also I think he’s very entertaining

  • Tess Herself

I agree….I couldn’t get through 30 seconds of her performance before I had to turn it off. It’s like her voice depresses me, to the point I can’t even begin to listen to the lyrics.

  • webster

I hope he goes far enough to get noticed. I REALLY like that song. I don’t think he’s that great a singer, though I do like his singing style. BUT: good singers are a dime a dozen compared to good songwriters. I would love to hear that song done by someone else, someone with a better voice, so I hope he stays around long enough to get some connections.

  • JustJam

Alex Preston kind of reminds me of Lee DeWayze. A bit quiet and shy.

  • Shawn Jang

Perception is reality. And right now she’s coming off as an overly serious contestant who will either crack under the pressure, start crying at every critique, or sing depressing songs for all her performances (if she makes Top 30).

As viewers, since we can’t actually meet the contestants, how they are acting on TV is the only thing we can judge their personality on, and with all of the upvotes to Miz’s comment, he’s not in the minority with the way he feels about her.

And as viewers, we’re the ones voting for these contestants, so it would be wise for Jillian to maybe do something to disprove our initial impressions? Or else it doesn’t matter how good her performances are because if she’s like depressed all the time, no one wants to see or vote for that.

  • geekygirl

Perception in this case is Fox’s reality. We are getting an edit of what they want us to see. I don’t know this girl, her edit isn’t particularly flattering, but I’ll reserve judgement til the live round. If she makes it that far. I haven’t seen the spoilers

  • Incipit

Huh. I just listened to these clips – none of these folks are bad singers, although I couldn’t get through Preston – but that was because he was doing the same cutesy mannered singing I dislike that a few of the contestants are already doing, in the high end of a lyric tenor voice. Just about my least fav male vocal sound.

First time I recall hearing Emmanuelle – he’s got a good enough voice, a little overwrought – but IDK what was the point of the whistle note except to prove he has one – the song didn’t need it. I like singers who connect with the song – not use it for a vehicle.

From the listeners side of that measure, Jillian Jensen has nothing in her vocals or her lyric that I connected to – and Maurice at least found a song that showed more of his capabilities. I never listened to that before because it’s that Miley person singing it. Take her out of the equation, it’s not a terrible song – DC said something to that effect a while ago, now I see what he meant. Although the lyrics still strike me as clunky, the song actually has some dynamics.

Leah Guerro had the easiest voice to listen to of this group, I liked her sound and her skills – and she and Maurice are the two I’m interested in hearing more from. Next time I’ll watch instead of just listen. Heh.

  • b_james

I liked her more there than I ever did on X Factor!

  • Mafs95

She kinda milked her sob story on X Factor. But this is American Idol. It’s different. All we saw from her were very tiny snippets, including this one, who don’t give much information about her.

Also, that ‘crying face’ is her normal facial expression. Some people just have it and can’t control it. It’s like those people who look angry when they’re thinking.

Like you said, we don’t know her and all we see is from TV and we create a perception of her. That doesn’t represent the whole truth, obviously. And I don’t think there’s anything she said or did on American Idol that makes her seem unlikable, imo. X Factor season 2 has ended, 1 year and a half passed and she may not be the same person she was before, even though I didn’t find her unlikable then, just a bit annoying.

Finally, I just said I disagreed with him, I didn’t downvote him because everyone is entitled to their opinions and I just gave mine, hopefully in a respectful manner, the same way you gave yours. My final opinion: let’s give some time before we critique these things like personality, character, etc… We barely know these contestants, let’s wait for the live rounds.

Emmanuelle has zero chance of winning by connecting to songs. He may as well use as many antics as possible to get attention. That’s his only chance of making money after this.
