Um okay.doesn’t deserve it though? what routine did tyce win 4??!!’

  • suebrody

Yay for SYTYCD and Tyce (Silence is a magnificent piece that Jessica and Will danced to perfection), and boo for Idol winning anything. The production values were a joke this year, to be kind.

  • anthrogeek

Well, as a season, AI may not have deserved squat, but only specific episodes were submitted in these categories, several of which were the finale, and those specific episodes may have been fine, if that’s what the voters were instructed to base their decisions on and not the season as a whole. That’s all I’m sayin’…..

  • iluvai

I love AI so I’m happy. I am so upset about Paula, but I love Ellen, so I’ll tune in. I’m still angry tho, grrrr….. Hurray for the awards!

But is that how emmy voters, or any voters of award shows, really choose the winners? By that one episode? I would think the voter couldn’t help but be influenced by an entire body of work. The AI fan that was pissed their VCR cut off a show might think twice about doling out an award for technical excellence?

It’s like when an older actor wins an award finally, and you know it’s not necessarily for the movie he’s up for, but everything else that came before it…

  • Grammie Kari

I am not sure AI deserves any of those awards, but last season was one of the worse (except Adam, Kris, etc.) and if it wins for best reality show, I will be shocked. Come to think of it, I don’t think ANY music or dance show ever won.

How good are these awards when they didn’t nominate Cat Deeley who is the best host for a Reality Show, IMO.

ETA: Oops, I was wrong. That wasn’t Bruce’s category. The Emmys get to keep some of their credibility with me.

ETA: How much do hope that if Bruce ever wins and they catch any film of him winning, it features 10 seconds of dead air staring at some random part of the curtain, he sounds like a Charlie Brown teacher talking and that the top of his head is out of the frame? Then, they should go to commercial before he finishes talking.

  • anthrogeek

But is that how emmy voters, or any voters of award shows, really choose the winners? By that one episode?

I dunno, I guess we’d have to poll some voters as to whether they viewed only the specific episodes that were submitted in each category before casting their votes, or whether they really had watched every episode of all 5 nominated series over the entire season and had that lurking in the back of their minds. I don’t know what the exact rules are for the voters, or how closely they follow them. Also, I did not watch any of the shows AI was up against in any category (except DWTS and SYTYCD, if those count), so I have nothing to compare them against to judge whether they deserved to win or not. Therefore, I don’t know if they’re looking for the actual results compared to perceived perfection, or just compared to the competition…. beats the crap outa me.

BTW, this Edit function always appears to fail because the Edit box gets stuck on the screen as ‘Saving…’ and never goes away (I actually have to navigate away from the page or close the box to get rid of it), but then it turns out the comment updated, anyway. Weird….

I just saw “Every Little Step,” a documentary about casting the recent revival of “A Chorus Line,” and Tyce was a regular old auditioner, and he was up for the role of Mike, which isn’t even that huge. Well, it’s pretty much of an ensemble show except for Cassie and Paul, but I digress… Anyway, Tyce came off like the biggest IDIOT. He had just sung and danced and he went out and was all, that was MY show, not theirs, it was all about ME and I did exactly what I wanted to do and if they call me back, fine, and if they don’t, fine, because I know I was great and what they think doesn’t matter. And then somebody came out to say he got the callback and he was all WHEEEE, I’m so happy! As if to prove that he was lying through his teeth with all the talk about not caring. Okay, so then months later, we had callbacks, and whoever was doing the deciding said something like, “Tyce kind of had a meltdown. The ego seemed huge and his dancing was over the top and out of control.”

He didn’t get cast. He didn’t get the role of Mike. Instead, he went back to SYTYCD as their Broadway expert when he goes to general casting calls along with everybody else and then doesn’t even get cast! Some Broadway expert. Not only is he not choreographing on Broadway, he can’t even get cast!

(Okay, he has one Broadway credit. He was assistant choreographer on “Good Vibrations,” a show that ran for 94 total performances in 2005. That’s his whole Broadway career right there. This is what Ben Brantley said about “Good Vibrations” in the NYT: “Even those who believe everything on this planet is here for a purpose may at first have trouble justifying the existence of “Good Vibrations,” the singing headache that opened last night at the Eugene O’Neill Theater.

“But audience members strong enough to sit through this rickety jukebox of a show, which manages to purge all catchiness from the surpassingly catchy hits of the Beach Boys, will discover that the production does have a reason to be, and a noble one: “Good Vibrations” sacrifices itself, night after night and with considerable anguish, to make all other musicals on Broadway look good.”)

So, anyway, after seeing him act like a jerkwad all over the “Chorus Line” documentary, I was really hoping somebody else would win that Emmy. This way, Mia’s head can explode since it was Jessica in the dance, but still… I would’ve preferred somebody other than Tyce win.

Congrats for Tyce Diorio – love him

and the Outstanding Lighting Direction for Variety, Music or Comedy Programming ‘“ American Idol –

Was that something to do with Adam asking the stage and lighting guys to set certain moods for all his performances? LOL.. sorry couldn’t help it

  • butte009

I would have liked to have seen Dmitry’s piece win, but I can accept Tyce’s piece as the winner. It really was exceptional. Tyce should stick to contemporary and leave the Broadway numbers to Adam.

You know Tyce will be nominated next year for the cancer dance, but I’ll be hoping that Travis’ piece wins.

  • Truthiness

Drinks are on me. Gak. Vodka shooters for everyone!

Can’t believe they reward this show for things they screwed up.

Which episode won, btw? I read in the headlines thread it was for Country week, is this the case?

  • Susan M.

Well, one of my best friend’s sons is one of AI’s lighting directors, so I’m happy for them. (Even though the dude couldn’t get us in for a taping at all this year). Since I don’t know what episode was submitted (heard country week, but that may have been here) I can’t really judge. I missed country week, so have no clue about the lighting design (other than Adam’s performance, which I’ve seen in vids).

Ironically, she (mom) doesn’t watch AI at all.

Adam is always the right answer

  • Kirsten

Since I don’t know what episode was submitted (heard country week, but that may have been here) I can’t really judge.

I did a cross-reference between the Official Award Announcement and the Idol Episode List:

Outstanding Art Direction: Episode 821/822 - “Top 13 Perform” – Theme: Michael Jackson Songs

Outstanding Technical Direction: Episode 834A – “The Finale”

Outstanding Lighting Direction: Finale (not sure why it wasn’t listed as 834A as well)

    There were also nominated for:
Outstanding Directing for a VMC (Bruce’s award): 833: Top 3 Perform (really Bruce? Other than “Heartless” I think that episode was made of fail in so many ways. Did you forget back-up singer gate? Maybe it was the only episode to finish on time. IDK)

Oustanding Sound Mixing for Non-Fiction Programming: 801/802 – Phoenix Arizona Auditions

Outstanding Sound Mixing for a VMC – Finale

Next week, the award for Outstanding Reality – Competition Program and Outstanding Host of a Reality or Reality-Competition Program will be given out.

  • mmb

if you haven’t seen “Every Little Step” you should definitely see it….wonderful, really interesting documentary….Tyce comes off really badly –maybe the result of a bad edit, but he comes off as an annoying egomaniac.

  • wordnerdarchie

Outstanding Lighting Direction: Finale (not sure why it wasn’t listed as 834A as well)

They deserve to win for the lighting on this portion of the show, but I’m biased due to the subject matter.

David Cook with “Permanent” on AI8 Finale.

  • Susan M.

Outstanding Directing for a VMC (Bruce’s award): 833: Top 3 Perform (really Bruce? Other than ‘Heartless’ I think that episode was made of fail in so many ways. Did you forget back-up singer gate? Maybe it was the only episode to finish on time. IDK)

WTH?? That was one of the few shows I cannot watch again for Adam’s performances. I thought his “One” was too rushed and backup singer gate was an EPIC FAIL. You just never freaking know, I guess.

despite last season’s reputation for glitchy technical problems (including a couple of time overruns)

They also almost got their stage manager killed, so there’s that.
