This week’s American Idol theme, via TVLine

The Top 7 will perform two songs each. One , a Billboard #1 hit from 2000 to 2012. The other a “soul” song from a previous decade.

Let the speculation begin!

  • Anonymous

So another contemporary theme! I’m glad they will have more songs to choose from this time. They should all choose one slower and one uptempo. It would show two sides to each of them.

  • Anonymous

Interesting theme. Soul? I like this better than doing more duets/trios though.

  • Valentin432

This is the theme they did for last year top 5 night.
I’m wondering what they call “soul” music from a previous decade, is that a different way to call Motown week?

I’m hopping some of the contestants take an unexpected song choice, it’s been great to see them nail some songs in their wheelhouse but I think it’s time to see them challenge themselves with a song they wouldn’t usually perform.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

I think this will be a fun week.  After last week, it will be especially interesting to see what Jessica picks this week.  I like the idea of this theme week.  I can’t wait to see their choices!

  • Anonymous

I am foaming from the mouth for Jessica to sing crazy in love by beyonce(is it even an option? Idk if it was #1)..vocally itd be awesome and I think it would show some personality..and then she can slow it down for the soul song..one of her songs has got to be something like crazy in love..maybe even only girl in the world by Rihanna?

    http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_billbord6.html

A quick google search came up with this list of #1s from 2000-2009.

I wonder if they’ll give the contestants some leeway with this theme. Iirc from season 4′s #1 theme, Anwar chose a song that hit #1 on a specific chart and not the Hot 100. Maybe this will give someone like Skylar a chance to sing something in her wheelhouse. How many country acts have hit #1 in the last decade? She’s going to have to take a song and countrify it again. Just glancing, there are plenty of songs for Joshua, Jessica, Hollie, and maybe Elise to choose from. The rest will need to change things. Shouldn’t be a problem for Colton, but P2 hasn’t been all that successful with his rearrangements so far.

Soul seems like it should be cut and dry but undoubtedly we’ll get some song that we’ll wonder why it’s considered soul. Anyway, I think Elise should sing some Dusty Springfield. Perfect for her, IMO. Then there’s Aretha, Sam Cooke (please Joshua), any of the Motown artists, etc. I think Hollie will have the hardest time with this because she lacks the feeling behind soul music.

Should be an interesting week for sure.

  • ReginaFilange

Great to see Nigel getting on board with modern themes while still sticking to the oldies-but-goodies.

  • Anonymous

This looks like the headlights of the bus coming for Hollie to me.
All the rest can bring the soul.  I’m not sure if they all really will.  P2 and Elise really will need to step it up.  Jessica is pretty safe this week, no matter what, but she’ll need to connect and leave a huge chunk of her innards on that stage if she wants to last even the week after.

  • Anonymous

I KNEW IT. I had a feeling this might be the theme, I should have posted :(

  • http://twitter.com/Sowsyalite Sowsyalite

For the Billboard No. 1 songs of the past decade:

P2……….  can do his Usher thing again.
Jessica….  can do Bleeding Love or Fantasia’s I Believe.
Hollie…….  can do some Christina Aguilera (What A Girl Wants) or Fergie (Big Girls Don’t Cry) or Katy Perry (Teenage Dream)
Elise……..  can do Empire State of Mind
Colton…..  can do Maroon 5′s Makes Me Wonder or Lady Gaga
Joshua….  can do some Rihanna or Bruno Mars again (Grenade?)
Skylar…… hmmm could be a tough week for her… only one no.1 from a country singer in Billboard Hot 100 in the past decade and that’s Carrie Underwood’s Inside Your Heaven.

  • Anonymous

Jessica will sing Etta James “I’d Rather Go Blind.”  She sings that better than IWALY. Since she hasn’t had the pimp spot yet, she’ll close the show.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfkLO-Zk0tQ
    Next moment, anyone?

Also, Colton could do anything from Lifehouse’s “Hanging By A Moment” or Switchfoot’s “Only Hope.”

I can’t wait for Joshua and Elise to surprise me!

    LOVE THIS THEME!

  • Anonymous

Jess will be AMAZING with I’d Rather go blind

  • Anonymous

“Soul” songs…sounds like this is taylor made for Joshua, Elise, and jessica

  • Anonymous

I would LOVE for Jessica to cover “I’d rather go blind.” there is a video of her on YouTube doing it.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Yup. And I’d add Phillip, since I think his voice could lend itself to soul nicely.

I think Colton and Hollie will have the trickiest job finding songs, though Colton’s good song picking skills could help him. Skylar could go either way.

  • Anonymous

It can probably be a number 1 from any Billboard chart, not just BB100.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=6709126 Zoey Giesberg

…I sincerely hope this doesn’t mean the group song is “Sexy and I Know It”. *shudders*

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=6709126 Zoey Giesberg

If Elise leaves this week, there is no God.

  • Anonymous

Is that a bad thing, since everything else is tailor made for Pop/Country singers!!!

  • Anonymous

Yes! No more duets! As for soul, Elise, please do a James Brown song! Joshua will have a stellar week. It’ll be interesting to hear Skylar and Colton sing a soul song. Jessica should do well. Can’t wait!

We’ll see who does better: Hollie or Phillip. I think either will go this week. I hope Hollie comes out of her shell. She has a beautiful voice, but she needs to let loose.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CY6US6TLMHKCGY43KQX4L2YJCU Damien R

Thats to assume that it has to be a billboard 100 song or any song thats been on the top of any billboard list.

I am LOVIN’ American Idol. I’m also a big David Cook fan ! I support this guy AND American Idol 100%.  Just to spread the word…….a recording and also some screencaps of David’s May 10th appearance on AI is desperately needed !!!! I am asking ALL David Cook fans up here on MJSBIGBLOG to please help me out with this request. Thank you so very MUCH, from the bottom of my heart.

  • Trina

Dear Josh – please sing some Sam Cooke or Otis Redding thnx!

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

Glad to see we aren’t playing any favorites with this theme

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

I think Colton and Hollie will have the trickiest job finding songs, though Colton’s good song picking skills could help him. Skylar could go either way.

Eh, Colton Dixon should be rolling in clover with the #1 hit theme. There’s been a fashion for alt-rock bands to do ironic covers of dance-pop hits, sometimes even with piano rather than guitar. Twenty minutes with Youtube, and he’s got his choice of song arrangements that will get him praised for artistic creativity. (ETA: If he does the Jamestown Story version of “Hold It Against Me,” I might have to find him less repugnant for several consecutive minutes.)

Soul may also be a lay-up for him: short list of alt-rock covers of soul hits.

  • Anonymous

Isn’t making everyone sing a “soul” song throwing the game?

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

I wonder how they’re defining soul. I bet at least one contestant will pick a song most people would not consider a “soul song.”

I think Jessica reeeeaallllllllllllly needs to stay away from Beyonce songs.

    I second that emotion!

  • Anonymous

I think Jessica reeeeaallllllllllllly needs to stay away from Beyonce songs.

  • Anonymous

yep, I think Phillip could do something like a Michael McDonald/Doobie Brothers song or Van Morrison. I think he and Elise have the blue eyed soul cornered this week and Joshua and Jessica will find it easy singing any number of songs from any decade to sing. I think if those 2 run into problems it will be if they choose 2 songs that are too similar to one another.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=743390233 Zach Leswick

Your song choices for hollie are spot on.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

No, each week’s theme typically favors somebody, and one half of this week’s theme gives room for everyone to do well.

Good point about Colton, Eilonwy, I was talking more about the soul part being tricky for him but there have been many many many alt rock covers of soul songs, so he should be fine.

  • Anonymous

Isn’t making everyone sing a pop song – throwing the game???

  • too-cool-for-school

I’m excited about this. It could be a good week for everyone if they use their imaginations and for some of them, take this chance to break out of their shell. I think the “now” choices will all be interesting.

And there isn’t much reason that soul should throw off any of them unless they don’t give it their best effort. Plus if it is too hard, they could do what some of the past Idol greats did and actually try to make a tough song their own. Think Kris Allen on disco night with ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ by Donna Summer. Please be creative, top 7. :D

Soul is a broad genre with a lot of great music. There should easily be a song that suits everyone. It’s up to them to do something great with it. This is way less tricky than Billy Joel or Year You Were Born, IMO. :)

  • http://twitter.com/elfstar89 Erika Fernandez

They should name it Jessica Sanchez redeems herself week.  She gets a shot of picking a better modern song and then she gets to kick everyone’s but at soul.   These are some predictions/suggestions for the Now songs. In my research I saw some definite trap songs that I could see some of the contestants mistakenly picking. I really hope they don’t. I’m looking at you Jessica- step away from Beyonce and you Colton for the love of Jesus do not do Creed.

Phil-Teenage dream by Katy Perry, Womanizer by Britney Spears (it would be
epic if he can Phil philips Britney), What Goes Around Comes Around by
Justin Timberlake, Maria Maria by Santana, Smooth by Santana

Jessica-We found love, Empire state of Mind by Alicia Keys, no one by Alicia Keys, Glamorous by Fergie

Elise- So What by pink, no one by alicia keys, Big Girls Don’t Cry by Fergie, Bad Day by Daniel Powter

Colton- Fireflies by Owl City, Viva La Vida by Coldplay (top choice), Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T’s

Skylar- Big Girls Don’t Cry by Fergie, Take a Bow by Rihanna, Bad Day by Daniel Powter, Inside your Heaven by Carrie Underwood

Hollie- Take a bow by Rihanna, Big Girls Don’t Cry by Fergie (poor Hollie, she
is just the hardest to pick for and her picks I’d rather give to others)

Josh- Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis, take a bow by rihanna, no one by Alicia Keys, Let Me Love You by Mario, Burn by Usher, U Remind Me by Usher

  • Anonymous

If they keep to the strictest definition of “soul”, the “then” part of this does seem to favor Joshua, Jessica and Elise. But a looser definition would open the possibilities up to a bunch of pop, rock and even some country songs that who wouldn’t necessarily think of as true “soul” songs

Is the “now” part a #1 hit from any of the Billboard charts? Or does it have to be a #1 hit on the BB Hot 100?

  • Anonymous

Oooo, thanks.  I can see Philip doing Bad Day.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

    >Think Kris Allen on disco night with ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ by Donna Summer.

One of my total favourite moments on Idol! I’d actually love to see Phillip do something like this. I’d really like to see him at his best.

  • Anonymous

And Whitney.  And Mariah.  It would be nice to see her step out of the box some.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IXDC7OBI42GZ6WSEQM5U2FT3SA Janet G

Yes, especially since Beyonce is a pop star, not a soul singer.

  • sandrajane

Doesn’t matter.  One year they had R&B night and included Rihanna songs on the Itunes list.  AI’s definition of “soul” is probably just black artists.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

She did last week and got voted out. If anything, it might have scared her back into the box.

  • Trina

Since the theme is Then and Now, I doubt the Soul part is just black artists. The list they were given probably has songs before certain years. And if Jessica were to pick Beyonce it would more than very likely be for the “now”/2000-2012 part.

  • Chrome Trash

I’d like to see Jessica tackle something like “Grenade” by Bruno Mars but give it a different treatment, the way Delilah did in Sing-Off (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHY98rN96CE). I think she really needs to get away from doing exact copies of songs this week. As much as I love her “I’d Rather Go Blind,” it’s still almost a replica of Beyonce’s version. Now, if she did that but did it more in the style of Paolo Nutini’s cover (minus the drunkenness), I probably wouldn’t mind. :)

As for P2, I spy a Matchbox 20 song in the Billboard list (Bent, from 2000). That might be a good song for him.

  • Anonymous

“Isn’t making everyone sing a pop song – throwing the game???”

I don’t see why it *has* to be. Can’t they just kind of reinvent a soul song in their own style? If Dolly Parton night wasn’t throwing the game, i don’t see why this has to be ….

Of course, I know that the judges and the audience are always all over the place about this kind of thing — sometimes saying that it’s okay to reinvent and other times saying that you have to sing soul songs or country songs with some of the original flavor. But that just seems wrong to me. Classic songs in any genre usually have good general basic song bones. And it should be perfectly legitimate to take them and resing them in your own style, seems to me.

  • Anonymous

Yes.  Please.  Because he is them.  Reincarnated.

  • Anonymous

Where do you think “soul” music originated???  It sure as hell wasn’t “white artists.”

Your statement seemed to reek of prejudice…

  • Anonymous

Yes – somehow Beyonce has been classified as a pop singer, but I believe she originated as a R&B singer.  We don’t mind sharing, it’s the other part of America that has a problem sharing.

  • http://twitter.com/SlimyMeatballs Nick Peterson

Count me in as part of the group really hoping Jessica will sing Beyonce’s “Love on Top.” Like everyone’s said in the past…with the build-up throughout and the key changes, it could turn out to be an incredible performance. Is that “soul” music though? What classifies as “soul” anyway? It’s like upbeat-dance “soul”! haha.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_I3NQHPT3NA6VGKK22RCMTGOCII Tiffany

Didn’t it say from a previous decade, which could be any decade prior to 2010?

  • too-cool-for-school

Yes – somehow Beyonce has been classified as a pop singer, but I believe she originated as a R&B singer.

Destiny’s Child definitely began as an R&B group. It didn’t take long for them to go in a more pop direction which Beyonce took with her in her solo career.

Her second album ‘B’Day’ was pretty eclectic and more of a return to her old style. It’s really good but I don’t think it has stood the test of time quite as much as her pop albums have. Pity.

  • Anonymous

I would love to hear Joshua sing a Sam Cooke song, but I hope he listens to one. The guy didn’t shout, knew how to pull back and not go too over the top. However, it will have to be spot on, because Sam Cooke is a legend and one hard act to follow. He could do some James Brown.

I don’t agree that one song being soul will necessarily mean disaster for Hollie.  I think she can pull it off if she gets the song right and gets into the moment.  What is Skylar going to sing?

I don’t consider Beyonce soul. I think she’s pop.  I think Jessica should stay away from Beyonce.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aleeatorio Alexandre Oliveira

Elise NEEDS to do This is a Man’s World. Please , girl , make me proud. She should cheat and sing Crazy by Gnarls Barkley in the “Now” theme. It peaked at #2 in Hot 100

  • sandrajane

I’m black, so I fail to see how I’m prejudiced against myself.

And my point still stands.  Somebody commented that Beyonce was pop, not soul.  I said it doesn’t matter, since AI had Rihanna songs to pick from for an R&B theme night.  Just because she’s black doesn’t automatically make her music R&B.  What part of that is untrue or even a prejudiced statement?

  • too-cool-for-school

One of my total favourite moments on Idol! I’d actually love to see Phillip do something like this. I’d really like to see him at his best.

Mine too! It was a really clever arrangement. He was really good at making songs his own. :)

I think Phillip is capable of that too. Hopefully he can surprise everyone this week! Do something a little more out of the box but still be himself.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

    dupe

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

What is Skylar going to sing?

If she’s a smart gal, she’ll Google “country remake soul” for ideas. There are a surprising number of country covers of soul songs out there, so it can be done, and major country artists have done it.

  • Anonymous

That Etta James song will be perfect for Jessica, Elise needs to leave now, I liked her a couple weeks ago on WLL but since then and maybe except for one song before then she has not impressed.  She was so pitchy and off on my favorite song by Goyte and just flat on that last song.  I hope Holly steps it up and Colton this week

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I would never call Bey a soul singer. Sometimes R&B, sometimes pop, but not really soul. She’s more R&B than Rihanna though.

I am curious to see what they classify as soul on this show.

I think there are a lot of country songs that could be redone as soul songs and vice versa. I don’t think Skylar will have a lot of problems IF she chooses wisely. 90% of singing soul is singing with feeling anyway, and Skylar has that pretty much down. She should be okay.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I’d like to hear Jessica cover something from “The Emancipation of Mimi”.

  • Anonymous

And please give the choir the week off again. You’re better without them.

  • too-cool-for-school

Joshua, Jessica and DeAndre all made it through Billy Joel week and lived to tell about it, despite that being a terrible theme for them… and pretty much everyone else because it was a terrible idea for a theme. For them especially though, that was bogus.

I don’t think soul music is any more slanted or “game throwing” than that theme, personally.

  • http://twitter.com/newbornstarr Wally.

‘Shake It Off’ or ‘We Belong Together’ would be perfect!

Though did SIO peaked at #1?

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Dunno, lemme check.  I’d pick “Shake It Off” myself.  But I’m pretty sure “We Belong Together” hit #1.

  • Anonymous

That’s what I’m worried about.  Jessica fans assumed she was safe and threw votes to Holly.  Now that Joshua is singing soul everyone will assume he is safe as well then he will actually be gone this week. It makes me feel pretty helpless. I think he should be around for the long haul. He’s a wonderful performer.

I actually see Phillip, Elise, Jessica and Joshua doing well.  The others not so much.

  • Anonymous

Josh should sing  “Kiss and Say Goodbye” by The Manhattans, he would kill it!

  • too-cool-for-school

Let’s hope Joshua gets the pimpspot for once! *fingers crossed*

  • gabriel oak

Just happy they didn’t do a country theme to help out Sklyar and Hollie.

  • Axxxel

“Crazy in love ” ? Jessica was not able to keep it up with the music when she sang that upbeat Gloria Estefan song…  so better for her to sing something uptempo but not too uptempo.

  • sandrajane

I’m not sure if We Belong Together is a good song for Jessica to sing.  With the exception that last long note, the verses are mostly fast-talking type of singing.

Don’t Forget About Us and Touch My Body hit #1 on the Hot 100.  Loverboy #1 on the R&B.  Obsessed #1 on the Dance charts.

And one more. Thank God I Found You is another #1 by Mariah.

  • Axxxel

Yeah, agree with you.. Joshua fans better keep on voting on this round or he will be “Jessica’d”…

  • http://www.facebook.com/aleeatorio Alexandre Oliveira

Elise is going to kick some serious butt if she sings “This is a Man’s World” like she did on Sing for Your Life.Jessica is going to have that massive pimp around her so that will keep her , definately.I think Colton will have some problem with the Soul theme

  • Anonymous

First thing I thought of for Colton is You’re Beautiful by James Blunt. That’s the only thing that really jumps out at me for any of the contestants.

  • Anonymous

I think this is Jessica and Joshua’s week to shine..both have voices built for soulful songs. I think part of Jessica’s problem last wk was that nobody knew the song, hell most people probably haven’t even heard of jasmine Sullivan. I only knew of her because glee did a cover of her song “bust your windows”..but I think if Jessica chooses a more well known song then she will be all set this wk.

  • Anonymous

Phillip Phillips because he can make anything sound bland and boring will not have a problem.  It doesn’t matter at all what song he is singing.  Will it sound different?

  • Anonymous

Did you say all of that the first time – MAJOR ROLLEYES!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/alicia.witham Alicia Witham

I was hoping Colton could sing Boston but unfortunantley it looks like it never hit number 1 :( That would be a perfect song for him.

  • Anonymous

    It’s coming

  • Anonymous

How about something like Bleeding Love for Phillip. Maybe he can get creative with that.

I’m looking forward to what Colton’s gonna do. He always delivers and never fails to acknowledge the original.

  • Chrome Trash

Exactly! I used to have an album called Rhythm, Country and Blues. There’s an amazing Patti LaBelle and Travis Tritt duet of “When Something Is Wrong with My Baby” that would show off her pipes. Other good songs there too, like “Since I Fell For You” by Reba McEntire and Natalie Cole. She could kill with those songs.

  • Anonymous

If Ray Charles can cut a country album, Skylar will have no problem finding a soul song to perform this week.  Just take one from ole Ray!

  • Anonymous

Here is a great one for Skylar…

  • sandrajane

I sure did.   Not word for word, but the exact same thing:

Doesn’t matter.  One year they had R&B night and included Rihanna
songs on the Itunes list.  AI’s definition of “soul” is probably just
    black artists.

Somebody better tell The Righteous Brothers they were not black.

  • http://twitter.com/Sowsyalite Sowsyalite

Uptempo is not very good for live singing competition unless you’re playing the piano or guitar yourself :)

Another wish is for Jessica to sing Destiny’s Child’s Stand Up For Love…

  • Anonymous

Amazed? It’s just me or anyone else can see Skylar going for that one?
And for Colton, Owl City or Coldplay seems the obvious choices.
My biggest doubt right now is who will be doing Mariah? She had like five hundred n.1 hits in the past decades.

  • too-cool-for-school

In your perspective, perhaps. I do hope he tries to up his game this week, but I can easily differentiate all of his performances. They aren’t bland and boring to me.

  • http://twitter.com/FreakinJuudy Judy Sia

For COLTON I’d love to hear..

    Billboard;
    With Arms Wide Open
    You’re Beautiful
    So Sick
Hey There Delilah (I can really hear his voice here)
    No One
    Viva La Vida
    Poker Face (Daughtry’s rendition)

    Soul;
    My Girl – The Temptations
Tracks of My Tears / Tears of a Clown – Smoky Robinson
Proud Mary – Creedence Clearwater revival

    (:

I like the theme and soul lends itself to creative interpretations. I recall Lee’s best performance of Treat Her Like a Lady was from motown week. I’m sure Skylar can find a country cover somewhere. This might hurt Hollie the most as she’s more prone to doing a straight cover and might not fare as well as the others.

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

I feel like Hollie is gonna go for “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”

  • sandrajane

For 2000-2012, I can see either Jessica or Hollie trying to do Mariah’s We Belong Together.  Watch it be Joshua.

My wish picks for Jessica (who I think should stick to R&B #1s and away from Beyonce):
    Ashanti -  Foolish
    Keysha Cole – Heaven Sent

Hollie must go uptempo and well known.
    Katy Perry -  Firework

Honestly, that’s all I can get for Hollie.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1552146216 Shair Shamsuddin

Nice and another contemporary theme for the contestants however they should know how to chose a song that might be relevant for them and make the judges remember their performance and its about time for them to take out the big guns (not talking about Skylar)  START TAKING RISKS…Its Top 7

I think Joshua, Jessica, Elise, Skylar can blew it out of the park on the soul theme not sure about the others though…this requires phrasing, emotion, attitude (I’m looking at you Hollie) well don’t know how will all turns out. This will be the theme to make redemption of some of the contestants

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

Waiting to see how pimped out Jessica is this week. Idol will make sure she has the last song, perfect lighting, dancers, choir, Standing Ovations from all judges..she will be carried thru the audience on a pedestal and they will trip Hollie down the steps or something. It’s going to be sickening this week the lengths they go to to keep her there.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

I see Elise doing well this week. Her voice was made for soul week. I hope she picks the right songs, if she don’t pick right this week, she’s done. I want to see her stay.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1552146216 Shair Shamsuddin

Ahhhhh!!!! The moment where Lee sang Hallelujah back in S9..Good ol days…

  • Anonymous

I would expect,  or at least would not be surprised,  if Colton covered something from the Rev. Al Green such as “Let’s Stay Together”, “Livin’ for You” , “Take Me to the River,”  and duetted with Skylar on “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”.

  • Ringo

They would be better off to express mild disappointment on one of Jessica’s typically wonderful performances and get the sympathy vote out.  I call it the Hollie effect.  Then all they have to do is compliment Hollie, saying its the best she’s ever done and we can be done with Hollie. That’s the way the shepards lead the AI voting sheep in past years.

  • Paris Cortney

Someone should sing “We Are Young” by Fun.
We already saw Idol used it on opening for Top 7 result
Now someone sing (hope Joshua) or invite them sing!

  • Westlife 2007

I can already imagine how the jugdes run the bus over Hollie, criticize that her singing got no soul, blah blah… while blow Elise, Joshua, Jessica up to heaven with their ridiculous standing ovation.

On a side note, I just don’t get Joshua. Maybe his style of oversinging appeal to many people but certainly not me. Sorry, Joshua’s fan!

It’s not a double elimination because there was already a double elimination the week Shannon and Jermaine both exited the show (for different reasons).

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

Doubtful; we already had a double elim with Jermaine/Shannon, so to keep things on schedule only one person goes home this week.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

But I don’t think the judges/TPTB really need to do that.  By now TPTB have to know if they want someone gone, the best thing to do is give that person light praise.  That way people won’t be so worried about trying to “save” them.  Not to mention, I don’t think Jessica is in any danger of going home this week no matter how she performs as her fanbase will be out in full force.  So they don’t need to overpraise Jessica to get people to vote for her.

  • Incipit

“They would be better off to express mild disappointment on one of
Jessica’s typically wonderful performances and get the sympathy vote
out.  I call it the Hollie effect.  Then all they have to do
is compliment Hollie, saying its the best she’s ever done and we can be
done with Hollie. That’s the way the shepards lead the AI voting sheep
    in past years.”

Exactly, Ringo. WNTS calls it the Mighty Mouse Effect. Same difference. These Judges have no subtlety. And Randy is the Lead Lummox. IMO.

Funny, we expect the contestants to get the hang of this about two weeks in – but these judges have had almost two years to figure it out.

The newer fans typically have a learning curve too, but they do learn. Just vote like crazed monkeys no matter what the judges say…and never split votes. *snerk*

    JMO. Of Course.

I think some people are wrong to think that Hollie can’t do a soul song.  As far as the contemporary song, I hope she will consider some of the suggestions people gave here last week. I love Katy Perry’s “Firework”, Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper”, Karmin’s “Brokenhearted” and Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe”.  These are all songs that Hollie could sing and do it better than the original.

There is so much great soul material, it’s hard to pick. I could definitely see Hollie doing Dusty Springfield.  Elise could do just about anything. I can even see her doing Joe Cocker! She did a guy group with WWL.  It just depends how far back they want to go or if they want to stay with a more current soul song.

I hope they don’t go for the obvious or the ones that have been sung to death on this show. I would leave Motown alone.  There is a lot of great material without Motown.

Joshua could sing Luther Vandross, Smokey Robinson, Al Green, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Ben E. King, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. The amount of songs is staggering.  If he takes on  any of these legends, he will have to bring it big time. I think he has the voice to do it.

I don’t think Colton will have trouble with soul.  He is capable of pulling it off. People think that if you aren’t a soul or r&b singer to start, then you can’t sing it.  I don’t agree with that at all.

hollie’s no one cover last year on the last round was killer!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/GottaVote4DREW Ryan

hollie would kill an fun uptempo in firework. as for soul, i dont have much info from that area, especially having to be from a past decade. does like 2000-2009 count as “last decade”??? i think she should have a big ballad moment with her soul song

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

Aren’t these themes basically what they’ve had before this season? Billboard and soul songs from a previous decade have been done this year.

  • everything

Looks like Jessica is trying to position herself in the pic – posing front and center between The Boys.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

There is a wealth of songs for both themes. Everyone should be able to find something that fits their style and voices. Unless, of course, Idol can’t clear what they want or gives them a very narrow list to choose from.

Prepared to be disappointed..most of the nice songs are not cleared..those that have been vocally raped over 11 seasons of idol will be most likely sung again… So do prepare to be disappointed..That or its just songs that we’re unfamiliar with and just hit the billboards top bottom charts..LMAO..

After all we are in it to be entertained..what’s a good show without the drama?

I’m dying to hear and see Jessica sing And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going though I know that song do not qualified for this week’s theme. It was charted in Billboard Hot 100 in 2006 but sadly peaked at 60. Yes in my opinion, it was a soul song but it was an 80 song, as to why it won’t fit the soul song from previous decade theme. This is might be Jessica’s last chance to (as JLo said in last week) to take us on a journey with her amazing voice. The title of the song itself  fits perfectly with her staying on Idol right now. :D

Joshua, you could blow this one out of the water!!!!!!!!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEu8DrO9PbY

  • BonnieDee

I think the soul song could actually be Hollie’s “moment.”  She has the voice for sure, now she has to dig down and sing it with feeling, and not worry so much about being perfect.  If she does that, she goes all the way to top 3.

  • BonnieDee

I think coming in at the bottom gained Jessica a LOT of Twitter followers.  She’s over 180,000 now.  She was at 117,000 last week when I last checked.

  • Anonymous

There’s a rumor on twitter that’s she’s singing that song. I could see it being her “soul” song. Jennifer Holiday also tweeted her. Personally, I would prefer some Etta James or Aretha, but I could see TPTB pushing her to sing that song because it’s well known and the lyrics ” I’m staying, I’m staying, and you’re gonna love me” make sense.

  • Anonymous

Oh yes! Solomon Burke and “Cry to Me”! The movie Dirty Dancing put him back on the map when they had this song in the movie.  He was on Sam Cooke’s record label, I believe.  Nice!

Joshua would kill this song! But then I think he would kill just about anything. There is really so much great material from which to choose.

  • Anonymous

Not a great song for Jessica, imo.

If she was a boy she would be out of the competition, or not been picked in the first place because of a lack a personality. It seems  acceptable for a girl though, as sitting pretty and have a powerful voice seems to be enough to get by.

  • Kirsten

I’m not sure I agree. Lee had zero personality (though he tended to be a bit surly at times) and it didn’t seem to hurt him in getting cast and winning. He didn’t even look pretty or have a powerful voice, but he managed to get by.

It’s not a great song for Jessica or the others because it would be seen as subtly complaining. One should avoid looking ungrateful even more than singing off key.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

What the hell? Don’t people already question Jessica’s personality? Hence her being kicked off before being saved? Wasn’t she kicked off because her performances were too cold and boring? Clearly it is not acceptable to lack a personality. They would end up 7th or 9th place.

  • BonnieDee

No she wasn’t kicked off because of anything other than the fact that everyone thought she was safe and were trying to save Hollie.  She picked up over 60,000 Twitter followers (She’s over 180,000 now) since that night which means she’s got a lot of buzz.   She’s not going anywhere.

  • Anonymous

Soul songs seem like obvious them fit for Joshua, Jessica, Elise, PP and even Skylar, bad for Hollie and Colton will adapt to his onw style.

But often on these shows, the obvious fit turns out disappointing and those would could have struggled do well. It could be an interesting show.

  • Incipit

“No she wasn’t kicked off because of anything other than the fact that
everyone thought she was safe and were trying to save Hollie.”

That was it, and that’s all it takes. Idol History has other examples, and two names for the phenomena, referencing Mighty Mouse and Sesame Street.

BonnieDee, I would add, there were people concerned for Skylar and for Phillip too. That was the first substantive negative critique he had received, from both Jimmy and the Judges. Jessica and Colton were probably the only two everyone ‘assumed’ to be safe. Which just shows to go ya – it could as easily have been Colton who was overlooked in the voting rush, and he was around mid card in the performance results. But the majority of his voting fans appear to have stayed focused enough to avoid that.

    IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/ProjectErica Erica Marie

I wish Hollie fans would stop hating on Jessica.  I know of Jessica fans who actually voted for Hollie last week. They do not monitor boards like this.  I am not claiming they were the reasons why Hollie was in the top 4 but surely, their votes helped.

  • http://twitter.com/ProjectErica Erica Marie

People claiming Jessica has no personality should also question why her backstories have been so weak. Her dad is a war veteran and they could spin that a million ways if they could.  She does not come from a rich family. Her parents are minorities. What more can we add to make that a fantastic background? Instead they show Jimmy Iovine praising her as if she had won.

Nigel must not like her that much.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

I don’t know how much you can trust the DialIdol predictors, but seems Jessica had been scoring low for the past 2 weeks. Colton also scored low last week, which shocked me. They seem to be accurate most of the time, but who knows.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

Yes, I think this week will be Elise’s week. The Soul song will be her best, that is if she picks the right song. I’m hoping she does. I’d love to see her stay. Love her voice.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

Lee had a great story tho, he lacked in personality, but when he sang he had a lot of charisma. I think that helped him a lot. People like to see the underdog win.

  • Ch Ris

Based on that “interview” of Nigel with TMZ, I am thinking he has his own bets. Pretty much the reason why most of the video packages they choose for her are about shopping instead of the aforementioned you pointed out.

  • http://www.realitywithoutapologies.blogspot.com/ lisakn

I think people are looking at her media background instead of the other. Her media background makes it appear Jessica is not suitable for Idol, it’s almost like she’s already been around too much. That might be what they are looking at instead of her family background.

Hollie doing a Dusty Springfield song = AWESOME
    Great Suggestion Nativenewyorker!

  • Tess

I think way to much is made of the power of back stories…really only a few stick in my mind and more negatively (here’s looking at you Danny) than positively.  If I weren’t online I really wonder how much I would know about any of these kids and how much any of it would matter.

Thinking back to seasons 4 and 5 and 6 when I wasn’t involved in the bubble I really can’t recall much about any of the kids other than the victors (post idol).  For me, discerning someone’s personality and “IT” factor is more, really, about what I see in the few minutes each week on my tube.  It has more to do with them sitting on the benches, or in the Ford ads or singing in the group numbers or talking to Ryan or standing being judged.  I don’t choose my “friends” by their histories but how I respond to them…same for Idolettes, I guess.

Besides…why would I choose a favorite based on their parents or siblings or their home towns or whether they were a cheerleader or lead in their school musical.  It is more about how they “move” me when they sing and if they can, in JLo’s immortal words, cause me to have “goosies”.

  • http://twitter.com/jhgebel James Gebelhardt

Ever since I heard Elise sing It’s a  Mans World on the Sing for your life round, My mouth has been watering… since Stupid AI won’t release the whole versions like last season, I’m hoping she does it this week!

  • escape

Twitter, Facebook followers, You Tube hits have no bearing on reality.  Jessica will probably be ok for the next few weeks.  But I can’t see her lasting beyond Top 4.  She’s a liability to the show now.  I can see her being pimp less and less.  And she will also be facing the harsh reality of what TMZ predicts – that the fan bases of those who are voted off will align against her – and give their votes to someone else.

  • Tess

Completely agree with you, escape.  I really don’t think fans like to have their judgments scrutinized and changed after the fact, at least on the program.  If Jessica was bottom 4 because of the alignment of the stars that night instead of her inability to connect with some voters…she may be OK in the real world but the “show” probably won’t crown her the winner.  I don’t think any “wild card” has ever won and I know no “saved” contestant has.  Besides…I think the “cloud” hanging over someone who wins in spite of being voted off earlier would be a hard thing to overcome in the real world…and I am sure it would grow pretty damn tiresome as an interview question down the road.

  • Anonymous

I was looking for some Fray song on the N.1 Billboard list, you found the perfect way around it!

  • escape

the “show” probably won’t crown her the winner.

There is no way she can win now or even make Top 2 anymore.   There will always be the lingering controversey as to whether the show forced the vote. And honestly, she probably is indispensable to TPTB at this point.

  • Ilya Setrakian

Elise or Joshua would KILL papa was a rolling stone..if not i hope Elise will reprise This Is A Man’s World..and Joshua will do some Otis Redding, James Brown, Sam Cooke, or something along those lines..Phillip needs to step it up and stop doing the same things or he won’t even make top 4, he need to take a pop some and completely rearrange it not like the maroon 5 song because that already has a rockish vibe to it, but something more like Justin Bieber, or like what he did with the Usher song, or better yet, to take a female pop song and twist it around like E.T.-Katy Perry, doing that acoustically could be really good, or teenage dream

  • Anonymous

LOL, yeah all the fan bases have to rally against “the evil” Jessica Sanchez. Sorry, but it’s laughable at this point how the youngest contestant in this competition is being vilified because Jimmy/the Judges like her. And how is she a liability to the show?

I like Jessica’s personality. I think she acts like a teenager.

Oh P2, pleeease sing an R&B song.

Colton Dixon should sing The Fray.
Phillip Phillips should sing Dave Matthews
Jessica Sanchez should sing Thia Magia
Joshua Ledet should sing Bruno Mars
Hollie Canvanugha should sing Demi Lavato
    Elise should sing Lady Gaga
    Skylar should sing Taylor Swift

    For Billboard #1s:

    Phillip: “Smooth”- Santana
    Skylar: “Amazed”- Lonestar
    Jessica: “Take a Bow”- Rihanna
    Elise: “You’re Beautiful”- James Blunt
    Joshua: “Grenade”- Bruno Mars
    Colton: “Viva la Vida”- Coldplay
    Hollie- “Bleeding Love”- Leona Lewis

Here is the great Dusty Springfield singing probably her greatest song ever – “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” in 1967. This is a live performance, the quality isn’t great, but listen to that voice!

There is a good deal of risk if Holly were to sing this.  She would have to bring the emotion. That was one of Dusty’s great strengths. She had an incomparable voice, but also brought so much power and depth of feeling when she sang.

Why would they want to get rid of arguably the best singer in the competition? That makes no sense to me.

There is no such thing as the best singer in the competition.  It is all subjective.  Everyone is talented in their own ways – and appeals to different people.  Nigel already did an about face and  says that she needs to show more personality and make better song choices.  Randy and Steven were quick to cover themselvs with MTV and said that both Colton and Phillip are very strong contenders for the crown.  The writing is the on the wall for Jessica.  At best, Top 4.

Hey, what does “previous” decade mean? Is it just the 90s? Or can they choose from as far back as they want > 40s, 50s, 60s?

  • http://twitter.com/ZarkeMulgore Zarke

You know what?! Just had an enlightenment. It wouldn’t be such a bad idea if Jessica gets voted off this week. She already had a big drama moment. She can start guesting on TV shows,  show off her vocals. Every show a different song and killing it every time, gain more fans. Its what happens after that matters more anyway. :)

  • http://twitter.com/ZarkeMulgore Zarke

No it will not be good for Jessica. You know it will just generate more “hate” because they will call it a “self-serving” song if Jessica sang it. But if Hollie sang it though >they will eat it up. They’ll say > That’s it girl fight back!

    What you think? :)

I just hope everyone would have a good night on their performances this week. And I hope each of the contestants would grab the opportunity to really sing a “current” song, in other words, songs that are really familiar to recognize.

Personally, I hope Jessica has learned her lesson last week that it’s not just about doing all those vocal arobatics and impressing the judges but more importantly impressing her audience and the casual viewers/voters. Because I honestly don’t think some fanbases of other contestants are open to transfer their votes to her once their own favorites get outvoted from the others as far as I have observed. That may changed though if she continues to really impress.
