2nd Update: @americanidol tweets “UPDATE: It’s official, next week’s theme is Elton John songs! And we wish the Rocket Man a very happy 64th birthday today!”

UPDATE: @americanidol deleted the tweet announcing the Elton John them. But the tweet from last night announcing the 80s theme is ALSO gone.

So that rumor I posted yesterday about this week’s theme being Elton John songs turns out to be true. Unless the intern who tweets for @americanidol is on drugs or something.

Just tweeted:

@americanidol: Next weeks theme will be songs from Elton John, w/ results show performances from @iamwill + @iamjamiefoxx & Fantasia Barrino (@TasiasWorld)”

I only posted the rumor yesterday because it came from a FOX insider. I felt kinda dumb when the Official press release sent out last night announced it would be “Songs from the 80s”

Oh well. I guess we start over with the speculation. It looks like Nigel really has abandoned those broad themes he talked about in interviews…unless he’s saving 8o’s for later on in the season.

I LOVE Elton John, but this is another tired theme. I really only enjoy his catalogue from the 70′s and early 80′s. Pia will probably pick some dreck from one of Elton’s musicals. Paul has ALREADY done an Elton song, not really looking forward to another, thank you.

Obviously, TPTB knew about his yesterday. Would LOVE to know the story behind this one…

    1. Pia-Bennie and the Jets: Pia needs to step out of her comfort zone this week as she can’t rely on the judges save at any point now. I think “Bennie and the Jets” has just the right mix of vocals and performance for Pia.
    2. Casey-Rocket Man: Casey should real it in this week and go a bit softer (the Adam Lambert mantra) and sing a ballad. This will still show off Casey’s gritty vocals, but shouldn’t turn anyone off.
    3. Lauren-Can You Feel the Love Tonight: Lauren is the only girl left in the competition who can really gain some steam from singing a ballad. I think this is almost the perfect Elton John song to take and make a country ballad.
    4. Stefano-I’m Still Standing: Stefano really needs to bust it out this week, and while this won’t necessarily give him any connection to the song it will give a little more life to his performance.
    5. Scotty-Candle in the Wind: Scotty does best when he keeps things simple…Candle in the Wind is right up his alley.
    6. Thia-Levon: This seems strange for Thia, but in the end I think she needs to just deliver a vocally stellar performance.
    7. James-Crocodile Rock: James is a bit of a one trick pony…in all honesty this song just makes sense for him.
    8. Naima-Mona Lisa’s and Mad Hatters: I really am not getting Naima, but this is one of Elton’s more soulful songs and I think she could probably calm down this week.
    9. Jacob-Circle of Life: This is an easy song to give a gospel spin, which Jacob loves and excels at…so why not?
    10. Haley-Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me: This song has been good to past idol contestants and it really is a way to show off your vocal chops. I think Haley needs to do something well known by Elton in order to stick around.
    11. Paul-Tiny Dancer: Out of all the contestants this is the week that Paul could truly shine. Elton isn’t THAT far away from the artist that Paul is and I have a feeling Paul will sing this one, but if he doesn’t I think he’ll do pretty good either way.
