  • blmetsfan

Gah…Friday I was thinking, “this wasn’t too awkward.” But, alas, Larry saved the awkwardness for tonight! The $ questions, the questions to Crystal…etc.!

  • AmericanIdol8

I agree blmetsfan, this wasn’t as good as the first part. I could have done without this part. It seemed “different” than part I. Wonder why?

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

WTF? Why did Larry grill Sib about her driver’s license? Not everyone drives. Some people actually take public transportation. Or bike. Or car pool. Or walk. LOL.

  • Liva

Why did Larry grill Sib about her driver’s license?

I think it was Larry’s first encounter with a “peasant”. The “little people” confuse him…

  • LeeTravers

Life is so short – would appreciate – and not in a snarky way – if anyone said something really interesting. Just can’t wade through these vids – sorry.

  • Liva

LeeTravers, it’s the same thing as Stephen Fry podcasts… I tend to hit ‘play’ then proceed to clean my office, do the filing etc. Interesting answers follow interesting questions. Larry doesn’t have a clue who these people are.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

LOL @ Mike talking about the final performances and praising Crystal and then saying Lee gave the fans the little smiles that they love. Paraphrasing, of course.

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

lol at Lee the perfect idolbot…. do you think there should be original music…. well idol is formula and i think they should stick to the formula…where you take other peoples songs and make them your own OMG lol

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Larry re: the deserted island question: “Two guys pick two guys.” Yes, and you’ve had like eight wives. Such a schmuck.

  • Ximena

on the show lee took a long time to answer a question, now siobhan has replace him haha

  • Jonny

@PJ Larry is such an ass

  • everything

So Aaron was voted most shy. While him and Tim were voted most friendly. Andrew was the Flirt. And surprisingly, Lee was voted Class Clown.

Lee surprised me the most out of everyone. This is the not the nervous, shy guy that was shown on AI.

  • Pam

That grilling Siobhan about her not having her driver’s license was a bit much. I didn’t get mine until my early 20′s so I certainly don’t condemn her for it.

Aaron is such as sweet kid.

Larry is just Larry. He’s the (pardon the pun) king of awkward questions.

    ETA: Thanks mj. :)

  • cookmerized

painful to watch, but i stuck it out and here are my senior superlatives, larry king style:

idol who, after watching this crap, i’m most surprised i liked: casey
casey came across as smart, funny, mellow and motivated – the first time i liked him actually
most well spoken and able to form complete thoughts: crystal
least humble: big mike (no surprise there)
lamest answers: tie between didi and andrew
    blankest stare: andrew

larry king is an idiot. i’ve watched a few years of these larry king interviews with the contestants and i have to say that this year’s group feels detached and not cohesive. I know they say that they are as close as brothers and sisters, but i just don’t feel it. maybe that was part of the problem with the show for me this year.

  • Totalele

The most interesting thing about the interview? Watching Didi totally bring the crazy. That girl is a nervous breakdown waiting to happen, man…

She kinda scares me, in a bunny boiler kinda way.

On another note: Gota love Lee’s PC/ pro-ai answers regarding the show….lol …all against original songs, over-praising the judges….

  • Willis

Grilling Siobhan about the drivers license was a bit awkward. But, seriously, get a license already. I’ve carted around people like her, and it’s annoying.

Wish they would spill the beans more. Casey seems to be the most forthcoming of the bunch. Mike lives in his world that revolves around his ego. Didi is grasping at anything that may give airtime. Tim is happy, and lost. Katie is thinking about the leftover bagels backstage. Andrew (and Lee) are just happy to be here. Siobhan really does hate Simon. Crystal can’t remember the lines she’s been given.

Dog & Pony show. Good TV!

  • chearts77

biggest brown noser = LEE!! His answers were so AI PC and pro show agenda. ugghh

I had to laugh at Mike’s response to who he thought would win between Crystal and Lee. He praised Crystal and mentioned how Lee knows how to smile. Nothing really praising Lee’s performances.

Casey is always pretty good in these interviews. I’ve enjoyed watching his interviews. He’s very motivated and appreciative of the opportunity and loves his fans.

I don’t think Larry needed to grill Siobhan about her driver’s license. I was actually pleasantly surprised she didn’t have one, because it shows she takes her priorities seriously.

But, this interview was way BORING. I also don’t get the feeling that they were all so close as they pretend to be. There seems to be some detachment there. IDK, maybe it’s just me.

  • jammasta

Seems like society would be more likely to grill a guy the same age as Siobhan who doesn’t have a driver’s license (a.k.a. ME! D:), wow i need to get my license asap it’s totally the reason i go on mjsbigblog all day everyday but driving is so scary and difficult when you’re me D:.

    I like Aaron’s hair.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Actually, I’ve heard others say this, but I didn’t see it until now. Casey IS kind of like Castro. He’s more into the music and is doing this for that opportunity. Both did their best and played along, but weren’t desperate.

I’m trying to forgive Lee for being so desperate, given that his original music is good. Yet he didn’t show who he is as an artist on the show AT ALL and I fear they will suck any originality out of him. We shall see.

  • janeeyre

Does Larry really think anyone would spill the beans if they WERE having a relationship?

Also, the word ‘artist’ is completely overused on Idol and in this interview. They just aren’t at the artist point yet. Can’t they just say singer? Artist seems so self-important and pretentious.

  • glamertitis

Does Siobhan talk a lot? I won’t be able to handle that – like fingernails on a blackboard when I hear her talking. And so socially awkward. I’ll wait til the PVR does its recording magic! LOL

  • http://myspace.com hgzaj

lol Larry was so mean and blunt about the driver’s license thing. I was surprised to hear it, but it happens! Maybe she is scared to drive? Poor Siobhan probably feels pressured now to get it… I remember I had to feel pressure all along to get mine. People were grilling me about it and I was only 16/17, dang! chill people. I did end up getting it a few months before I turned 18 by the way. But people kept pressuring me and I was nervous so I kept putting it off. Jeesh!

  • S0n0fLucy

Poor Siobhan. They made her hug a stalker fan and a judge who bashed her every week in front of 25 million viewers, now grill her about a driver license. WTF? This girl didn’t have enough money to buy a computer, don’t u know Larry ?
She handles awkward moments very well. What a strong spirit.

  • Mariam94

I think what Lee meant was that the theme week challenged them & that’s what makes American Idol a true competition. I love the idea of originals, but do you really expect the kids to come up with something original every week? Song writing takes time, it can’t be forced.

  • Mariam94

I’m kinda turned off my Didi & Mike. They just haven’t done anything to make me like them more..

Casey’s like the Castro of this season, Aaron is extremely well-spoken, Tim just seems to be going with the flow (nice kid though), Crystal is just well Crystal (not a bad thing at all), and Lee is starting to show me the real him: A sweet, genuine, down to earth guy who has a sense of humor, but is serious about his music.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I think what Lee meant was that the theme week challenged them & that’s what makes American Idol a true competition. I love the idea of originals, but do you really expect the kids to come up with something original every week? Song writing takes time, it can’t be forced.

Rock Star had themes, but had one week with a song-writing competition. If they have stuff in their wheelhouse, it shouldn’t be a problem. I think it would be cool. Lee has plenty of good material. It’s not like they have to write it that week.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

A sweet, genuine, down to earth guy who has a sense of humor, but is serious about his music.

And not knowing him at all, I get the feeling he has a dark side. That he’s a bully. Of course, I heard about him getting kicked out of school for fighting, so perhaps that’s it.

  • OvenMitt

I find it interesting that Lee is suddenly so articulate and succinct with his answers. And, wow, a company man if I ever saw one! I think he and Idol are the perfect fit: them ready to mold him to a pulp, and he the eager puppet. It seems very inauthentic to me, but I guess I shouldn’t expect something loftier from either party considering the situation.

In other news, I love that Crystal and Casey were so adamant about featuring original songs on Idol. Performing crowd pleasing covers effectively is one thing, but if you can’t deliver an original tune and get people on your bandwagon, it doesn’t bode well for your post-Idol success.

  • LeeTravers

Coming back and reading this posts, so happy that Casey has made a good impression. Thinks he’s a great guy, great musician, and worthy of making an album. I’d certainly buy it.

  • LeeTravers

P.S. Casey getting kicked out of school for fighting? Who started the fight and why? High school? Makes a pretty big difference. Anything ten years since portraying him as having a “dark” side?

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

The sad part is that Lee has some good original stuff. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle him.

  • catira

I kind of thought Tim was the friendliest and nicest guy there.

Awww. Loved how Lee said¨Tim is like the nicest guy EVER”. “He doesn´t have one mean bone on his body.” So sweet.

  • LeeTravers

Lee may be good, but still can’t get past the angelic choirs. (And don’t think they were his idea.)

  • Megz

Oh Siobhan, I feel your pain. I’m 19, and don’t have my license yet. And everyone I know grills be about it. I just prefer walking.

I LOVE Casey’s laugh. I can’t help but laugh everytime he laughs.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

P.S. Casey getting kicked out of school for fighting? Who started the fight and why? High school? Makes a pretty big difference. Anything ten years since portraying him as having a “dark” side?

Not Casey. Lee. I have no idea about the circumstances.

  • movin2thabeet

And, wow, (Lee), a company man if I ever saw one! I think he and Idol are the perfect fit: them ready to mold him to a pulp, and he the eager puppet.

OvenMitt, I had the same impression. And yes, I do think Lee has a dark side. It mostly came out in his youth though, and we don’t really know how well he’s integrated it now. Could be that being the class clown helps. But its also clear that he has a fighting spirit. I know its been his dream to make music, but the fact that he’s still fairly awkward and stiff on stage, and won Idol regardless, does make me wonder how ready for this he really is. A competition with an intense focus is one thing. A long haul tour, press, recording, and all the rest of a life of a spotlit recording artist is quite another. I do see him as a company man, and that really could go either way as far as a long-term successful career goes. We’ll see.

BTW, I wasn’t really surprised by any of them. They each kind of fleshed out my understanding of who they are as individuals. I do think Casey has had the most experience as a working musician with Crystal and Mike following close behind. I expect those three to make the biggest long-term marks on the music scene. But hey, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lee or Tim or really any of the others also got something going. Of course, most of the resources will be thrown Lee’s way, so there’s that. All I can say is I’ll be ready with my autotune antennas on. (I’m with Mike on how Lee won this contest).

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I had to laugh at Mike’s response to who he thought would win between Crystal and Lee. He praised Crystal and mentioned how Lee knows how to smile. Nothing really praising Lee’s performances.

I chuckled about that, too. Bless Mike’s heart for being honest. :-) It could get him in trouble, but I love it!

  • chessguy99

Seacrest was so much better last year when he subbed for King.

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

some people just like getting driven around. I was one of those who was like, “Hey take me there”, “hey lets go here” But then I got a job, and it was a hassle to be dropped off and picked up so I got my license at 18.

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

I think the only ones that have a chance at this music thing are Lee, Crystal, Casey and Katie. Whatever happened to Lily Scott??? I thought she had a chance too. I liked her.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

As for Lee being a company man, I sure hope they give him some material that works for him. I’d hate for his artistry to be lost in his willingness to compromise. I do see potential. I don’t think his originals mesh with the Idol formula, so it will be interesting to see how it unfolds. I’m also thinking the recording industry is too inundated with Idol guys.

  • LeeTravers

Lee has perhaps a “dark” side? What is a “dark” side? That we’re not always nice all the time? Well, no surprise there.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Well, LeeTravers, I think it would bode well for Lee to have a “dark side” in terms of his music. Art often comes from dark places.

  • catira

I don´t think Katie has a chance in the music business whatsoever. There´s just nothing special about her and there are many just like her out there who are way better.

I do think Lee, Crystal and Casey will be successful in the music scene and Tim will be very successful in Hollywood doing TV shows like Glee , Disney or the CW. JMHO.

  • chili1000

Grilling Siobhan about the drivers license was a bit awkward. But, seriously, get a license already. I’ve carted around people like her, and it’s annoying.

She didn’t have a car so a license wouldn’t have done her much good, anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I do think Lee, Crystal and Casey will be successful in the music scene and Tim will be very successful in Hollywood doing TV shows like Glee , Disney or the CW. JMHO.

I do not get the Glee comparisons to Disney or the CW. Glee has a dark humor that Disney doesn’t. Besides, the cast of Glee can sing their faces off…

Timmeh, as much as I loved him for a minute, would be totally awkward on Glee. Disney should snap him up.

  • Letitride

I see potential in Lee too…I kept seeing it all season. That’s the problem. In my opinion, he has still never broken through and tapped into it. And the chances that Lee will get producers who will help coax it out of him are not good. Instead, he will be steamed rolled and molded into the label’s product of the month.
All of Lee’s politically correct answers seem to say that he’s all about protecting the company now.
Possibly Lee’s best work will come out 2 or 3 albums down the road. I do not have high hopes for his debut cd. Saying that, I hope I am dead wrong. I would like to see him succeed.

  • wjmtv

    pj:

And not knowing him at all, I get the feeling he has a dark side. That he’s a bully. Of course, I heard about him getting kicked out of school for fighting, so perhaps that’s it.

According to an article written about two years before Idol (it was posted here several weeks back, but I have no idea where) Lee was kicked out of school for fighting. But the fighting was in defense of a friend. Some would call that bullying, others would call it something else.

I view it as an event, like others in some season 9 contestants’ pasts, that is long over and he has clearly grown beyond it, as have the others. But I agree with your comment that it’s sometimes good for songwriters to have a dark side.

  • sue

That is a good question about how much the idols made when they were on the show. Do they get paid per episode? American Idol gets paid millions from advertisers, sponsors etc. I wonder what they pay these guys for being on the show and making it to the top 10? This is besides the tour money of course. hmmm…..

I imagine Lee being the guy that might duck tape a guys ass in the locker room for laughs in high school.hahha Ok I am thinking of Emilio Estevez in the Breakfast Club. Lee does remind me of Emilio, his build at least. Siobhan could totally pass as Ally Sheedy, lol. I love Casey’s laugh too. It would of been better with Ryan since he knows these guys the best. Oh well!

  • Vak33

Lee is right about originals. What if there’s a contestant who has enver wrote a song in his life? It’s not American Songwriter, it’s American Idol. It’s cheating the contest to not have to do other songs. besides for that, the commercial viability of an episode is completely shattered by an “original” night. The vast, vast majority of Idol fans couldn’t care less about hearing the original songs of an Idol. So you’re handicapping certain contestants who aren’t songwriters as well as handicapping the commercial viabililty of the product. And most of the biggest acts around aren’t really songwriters anyway.

So bravo for lee for not cowtowing to the “movement” within rabid parts of the fanbase (invariably the smallest part of Idol fandom). It’s considered the “cool thing” to look for originals by the online fans right now, but Lee shouldn’t have to agree with them, and he doesn’t. He has his own opinion. And the guy has released two quality CD’s, so it’s not like he doesn’t have quality originals to use, he just understands the nature of the contest.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

wjmtv, I didn’t say Lee was a bad guy. Just that I got this vibe, and that story kinda cemented it. He was also living with his teacher? That seems inappropriate, even if it was platonic.

I don’t know Lee and I’m just speculating.Isn’t that what we do here? What I say really doesn’t matter, so no worries!

  • Trina

Ok good so I wasnt the only one who watched this and thought Idol has Lee trained like a good little puppet already. Was some coaching on the proper answers part of the winning package? heh.

I grew up in a part of NY where there was public transportation everywhere you turned around so while I got my learners permit when I was 17 I didnt actually get my license until I was 22 and ended up moving to a more suburban area and had to have a car so I cut Siobhan some slack.

  • Idol Freak

Wait, I missed the “living with teacher” thing – could you enlighten me please. It sounds interesting.

As for the thing with his teacher, I haven’t heard anything beyond speculation and smarm. There hasn’t been anything in the local papers on that subject that I’ve seen. If there is, I’ll pass it along unless the formidable MJ beats me to it. :)

Thanks. I really don’t judge any of these kids. If he did live with his teacher, it was inappropriate on her part, IMO. I just hope he sticks up for himself when making his album. I think his originals are really good.

I read – although I can’t think where, some blog – that the teacher, Amy, was actually his girlfriend. Since she’s not his teacher anymore, that would be weird but not illegal or anything.

ETA: They all have media training. It’s part of the package. Happens every year. Some are better with it than others. How is it possible that all the secrets aren’t spilled every year? Media training.

Really? His girlfriend? That’s way worse than I thought and depends when the relationship started. Sounds fishy to me. There is NO EXCUSE for developing a relationship with a high school student.

ETA: I just looked on wiki and Lee is not an orphan.

Life is so short – would appreciate – and not in a snarky way – if anyone said something really interesting. Just can’t wade through these vids – sorry.

I would have instantly fallen in love with any of them that would have said Crystal should have won! LOL! Nothing against Lee. Alas, they could not do so because they have to live with each for the next three months. Dare I say, Andrew may have come closest because He, (Lee’s best friend) said there were mixed feelings, but he was proud of Lee.

    Love you Crystal!!!

  • cookcricket

LOL @ Mike talking about the final performances and praising Crystal and then saying Lee gave the fans the little smiles that they love. Paraphrasing, of course.

Okay, LOL, Mike did come close as well. Too bad I just don’t like his singing.

  • AmericanIdol8

I am sorry that there are those who either haven’t really got to appreciate Lee’s voice or has never heard his pre-idol albums. I have gotten both and I just love them! I can not wait till Lee’s new album comes out! I feel in love with his voice from day one. I can admit he is not always in tune but to me that makes him more human and adorable. That is just me. I have listen to Crystal’s new song and I love it as well. That girl is growing on me.

  • Dlynne

I agree with Lee about the formula of the show. As much as I would love to hear original music, it’s just not realistic. Some of the contestants aren’t songwriters so it would put them at a clear disadvantage. There has to be as level a playing field as possible for this show to work.

Lee’s articulate reponses are not any more PC to me than those of Kris, Adam, David Cook or David Archuleta. They all said the “right” things when asked. That’s just how it is. Maybe when they’re older and American Idol is off the air, we’ll see some books written about the real Idol experience. Until then, I fully expect most of these kids to avoid biting the hand that feeds them.

As an aside, I’m pulling for Casey. I really want to see him succeed.

  • springboard

All of Lee’s politically correct answers seem to say that he’s all about protecting the company now.

They all do it, they have to as it is part for the contract.
It’s like the idols are 19 employees, whereas the big stars are their own people. It is still a very good position to be in, and, for most of them, much better than where they would be at without idol.

  • Grammie Kari

Being able to afford a car is something Larry King just wouldn’t understand. What awkward questioning. I felt sorry for Siobhan having to put up with it!

… and i have to say that this year’s group feels detached and not cohesive.

cookmerized, I thought it was just my reaction. I rememeber Season 7 and 8 and their groups reaction. This was different. Season 7 Idols looked like they were having a ball. If someone figures out what it is we are sensing, please pass it along.

  • Grammie Kari

This girl didn’t have enough money to buy a computer, don’t u know Larry ?
She handles awkward moments very well. What a strong spirit.

I was unable to edit, but thank you for pointing this out. Now it explains some comments Siobhan made about social networking. What a sweetheart.

Larry seemed confused with the questioning. He asked Tim about going back to school. That’s Aaron. He asked Aaron about playing an instrument. That’s Casey. Just lousy interviewing.

  • flicker

Lee has said that his former teacher, Amy, is like family. She helped put him back on track after he was kicked out of school. it’s easy to understand how a 17 year old would bond with someone who helped him so much.

One article mentioned that before he left Mt Prospect for Idol, he was splitting time living in his parents home and Amy’s home. Another article said that the lease on his apartment was up just before he left for Idol. Maybe he needed a place to stay for a short time after the lease was up. Who knows. At any rate, he was 23 years old, and long past being her student.

  • St.Lucia

Gah. Larry grilling Siobhan about her license. There isn’t a law that says “must get license at 17″ and people like Larry grilling her is exactly the reason why she might not have it. I didn’t get my license until I was 18, but I had been pressured for so long about the responsibility and I was also the oldest so I was expected to cart siblings around. By the time I got into a car I was so terrified it took me a while to even want to drive.

I agree the group doesnt’ feel cohesive.

You’re thinking about Lee. He was suspended for fighting and was sent to a school for at risk teens.

Casey’s the one who had DUI and spent a month in prison for it when he was 20.

I’ve been following Casey more closely this season and he has admited his mistakes, paid for them, learned from them, and grown because of them. I suspect the same may be true for Lee. Both of these guys seem to have grown into decent men, so I refuse to hold their past mistakes against either of them.

Both of these guys seem to have grown into decent men, so I refuse to hold their past mistakes against either of them

    I could not agree more.

People…Lee was living with the family of Amy Silverman….his teacher from the alternative high school he went to. He also just happened to have an girl friend named Amy. No scandal.

I wanted Crystal to win, but pretty much knew it was going to be Lee. And I honestly didn’t have a problem with that. I agree, Lee on LKL was very different than when he was on AI. Smart guy, definitely knew what he was talking about. Not introverted at all. I am sure some of his confidence came from winning. But I was still surprise to hear that he LK asked who the Class Clown was, the others all immediately shouted Lee.

Too much speculation in the comment section about people’s pesonal lives. Speculation – all of it.

while i agree with someone who said… they aren’t all songwriters.. when it comes to singing original songs …. i also strongly believe they need to be able to “sell” a song thats never been heard before.. because if they win they will have to do it.!! therefore i still feel maybe in top 5 and up to 2 should be able to sell a song…(not a reworked tried and true) but an untested one especially if they are taking away the “winners single” (which i really missed this year seeing how 2 contestants interpret the same song) …and i still wonder why they took it out this year!!

Siobhan is the wierdest chick I’ve ever seen.
Man, I wouldn’t want to have the seat next to
    her on the tour bus.

Then you have led a very sheltered life! Based on what many of the top 10 have said about how well they get along with Siobhan, they may be fighting over that seat next to her. At least they won’t get bored!

  • whatever4444

Siobhan is a sweetheart. Larry really made fun of her for not having a drivers license and made her feel bad. If he only knew that she was more worried about feeding her little sisters than driving around and buying a car. Clueless old man…

It’s not really a surprise that Lee has nothing but good things to say about Idol, is it? He’s just won, and he’s going to be in that Idol bubble for a while. To expect him to be anything but Idol’s biggest champion and cheerleader isn’t very realistic.
