Here it is…The television commercial for American Idol Season 8, featuring David Cook.

The ad begins with David about to take the stage, it rewinds through current images of his life, until David is in bed dreaming about his Idol journey. Images of Idol moments lead back to David on stage, performing his single “Light On.”

Pretty cool.

It’s the first time Fox has used a former Idol to promote a new season.

The commercial should also serve to promote the album and single too. Smart!

Bonus: Jolene uploaded the Fox LA behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot to You Tube. It’s also posted after the jump.

Video after the JUMP…

Behind the Scenes:

  • jan

Thank you so much MJ – now that is a really good commercial. Can’t wait to see it on my TV. I hope they play it often.

  • ItsMeRenee

Now that was a very cool commercial! Thanks MJ!

  • http://carsonleigh.com carsonleigh

Thanks so much MJ. What a great commercial.

  • shell29

Very cool-I love it! Thanks for posting it MJ.

  • Garnetstar

OMG. That was epic. The guyliner was epic as well but that’s a whole nother story. That is all. Yes I am biased.

  • leome

Very good commercial indeed, loved the idea.
    Thanks MJ.

  • YellowClouds

    Oh yay. That was awesome.

  • oceana

Yes thanks!! What a great commercial, well done, professional, it sums up the Idol dream, and it’s an added thrill to see Cookie in it. Love it!! :clap_tb:

  • Trina

Damn I got chills. That was amazing.

  • JOJOSIE

Thanks for finding this. If it was only on Fox I’d have never seen it as AI is the only show I watch on that channel. Cook does a good job as usual and it does a good sell job for the show and for him.

  • jenni

Very nice commercial. They mentioned doing one with other Idols; I’d personally like to see a Carrie one too. She’d be completely adorable. Maybe she’d walk by her wall of awards or something, lol.

  • smartcookie

    Awesome! Thanks, mj!

(But someone needs to tell David and/or his handlers that one takes one’s eye makeup off before bed. The Lancome counter is full of eye makeup remover!)

  • May

Thanks MJ! I agree…it’s pretty cool.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

    Love it! Thanks mj. :)

  • FolkFan

That was great—thanks for posting, MJ!

  • bluejeans

That was awesome! LOL at the guyliner. Thanks MJ.

  • templeton

Awesome! I was hoping to see the commercial but really wasn’t interested in the football game or the movie. Thanks so much for posting this. Love that he showed off the tattoo.

  • hypertwink

Wow, I was afraid that it would be cheesy. Boy, was I wrong! This made Idol seem hipper and edgier.

  • Mia

    (

But someone needs to tell David and/or his handlers that one takes oneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s eye makeup off before bed. The Lancome counter is full of eye makeup remover!

He is resting in bed momentarily dreaming of his past, before getting out of the room, into the limo, on to the stage for his performance. i.e. he is clothed to be on stage, not to sleep.

  • smartcookie

Aw, I was just kidding. No worries! Since his eyes are open (even the one on his wrist) he clearly isn’t sleeping.

No foolin’ now — it’s a really well-done ad, with excellent effects AND effect. I relived the “David…. Cook!” moment and the couldn’t help smiling all over again. Good memories!

  • oceana

It was a cool ad. Not hokey at all. And I love the guyliner. He was laying on the bed thinking, not tucked in for the night. LOL (or as Mia said, he was just about to get into his limo, but he stopped for a moment to reflect on how it all happened.)

  • FolkFan

I was a little concerned when I read the storyline as to how it would come off. But it really was well-done. He comes across as a complete star, and the journey storyline works for both him and AI.

  • sleepyinsomniac

Okay, am I the only one who’s still creeped out by that freaking huge ass eye tattoo? That being said, that was a great commercial. And now I have to agree, Light On would be a great goodbye song for the upcoming season.

ETA: Forgot to say it before, thanks MJ!

  • RV65

    COOL VIDEO AD!!!!

  • hollygo9

W.O.W. Boyfriend is getting the full delux promotion package from 19Evil. That is perfection.

  • Jocelin

I was expecting cheese but it was cool and edgy. Great looking commercial.

  • YellowClouds

Okay, am I the only one whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s still creeped out by that freaking huge ass eye tattoo?

    Nope.

  • oceana

I like the way it starts when he’s onstage to sing his single, and goes backwards to how it all began, and then jumps back to the present. Very effective in such a brief segment. Kudos.

That’s the first time I’ve noticed that tattoo. Is it an eye? It looks like one. I wonder what the significance is.

    The eyeliner looks sexy …

  • IdolFanatic

Way cool! That totally gave me chills!

  • bluejeans

I love the creepy eye tattoo. The poor thing has been hiding for a while. C’mon David, don’t be ashamed of it. Flaunt it. Glad to see it again. Hee. When he was lying on the bed, there were 3 eyes… :D

  • Mia

What is interesting to me is that they let him do the guyliner and let him display the freaky eye tattoo so flagrantly. Surely, those two things are not what core AI viewership would expect. But that is exactly how he dresses for stage. His stage outfit is exactly what he has been wearing lately black/red vest/tie. The guitar is the one he uses all the time.

The powers that be let him represent himself honestly tattoos, guyliner and all. David must have some special magic to get away with it.

  • Garnetstar

Yeah it does make Idol look edgy and cool. And promotes David and his freakin massive tattoo. Yeah, can you imagine if you were his GF and woke up to th…….wait; yeah, there is no way that scenario would ever be bad.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

When he was lying on the bed, there were 3 eyes

    :lol_tb:

  • canadiandcfan

    EEEK thanks mj!!
I love the commercial, even though the amount of makeup he’s wearing is a little frightening to me.. but still. Very well done!

  • john_socal

Totally awesome exposure for David, Light On and Idol. This is what happens when your personal manager is Simon Fuller!

  • YellowClouds

The powers that be let him represent himself honestly tattoos, guyliner and all. David must have some special magic to get away with it.

I was just about to post that..

It seems like Idol are trying to market themselves as David Cook instead of making him fit their cheesy/bland mold.
That’s pretty cool and would work well for both sides IMO.

  • john_socal

    MJ gets the scoop again!

  • Tony

Really nice commercial. I’m actually a little surprised that ALL of the winners haven’t starred in some of the Idol promos.

  • gingerly

I like his eyeball tattoo…I was happy to see it. He’s been hiding it too much. Awesome commercial!

  • oceana

The powers that be let him represent himself honestly tattoos, guyliner and all. David must have some special magic to get away with it.

I don’t know if it’s a special magic, or just the producers acknowledging that in order for Idol to have “cred” in the business, they have to let rockers be rockers, and you know, rockers have tattooes and aren’t always politically correct. So by showing David this way, they’re saying (I can extrapolate) that there is room on Idol for people like Cook and Daughtry, as well as more clean-cut contestants. It seems like they’re “dirtying up” Idol’s image a bit, probably deliberately, as these ads are well thought out.

Just guessing, maybe Daughtry wouldn’t have agreed to do such an ad. I hope it doesn’t backfire on Cookie – as he does need to disassociate himself from Idol at some point, but not necessarily now.

It would be cool to see some of the other Idols make them – not just the winners either – but I think some of the most successful ones would be reluctant to come back now and do that. Carrie might be willing though.

And off-topic, it’s so cool that Carrie and Cookie are friends. I love that.

  • Jolene

    Double post. Eeep.

  • Jolene

I love it. Man, it’s awesome. Whoever thought of the concept should really get a raise because it’s really effective to see the journey again when you already know the end result. Very strong and compelling.

And LOL at the blatant showing off of the eye tattoo after it’s been hidden so well all through the press tour.

  • bluejeans

I think they purposely wanted to show off the eyeball. Either that or David insisted on it, because when he was putting both hands behind his head, they only show the wrist with the eyeball tatt. The other wrist was in the dark.

  • Barbariba

Thanks for posting this, MJ! I think it’s an extraordinary commercial, very edgy and artistic. I loved seeing the final moments when David is announced the winner. It brought back so many good memories. I also like the way it goes backwards from present day to David’s audition and then back to the present. It’s all about the journey and David certainly has an amazing story. Awesome ad, awesome!!!

  • elisad

    Thanks MJ! And FOX…

  • FolkFan

The ad works, IMO, because DC was himself in it. Tattoos, guyliner, guitar, and all.

  • ItsMeRenee

Showing the eyeball was definitely on purpose. In every other shot that you can see his wrist, it’s covered by a black bracelet. I wonder if it’s also David’s way of trying to give us a hint as to its meaning.

Hmm. Third eyeball. What could that mean? I got nothing.

  • khomphuong

one of the best American idols winners.. can’t stand his guyliner tho. Just can’t stand it.

  • wjmtv

    Dayum.

Nice commercial. Makes LO sound like a pretty bitchen song.

I have ideas about a third eye, but they aren’t very polite……

    or maybe he’s a Mason?

  • bluejeans

Hmm. Third eyeball. What could that mean? I got nothing.

Having “someone/something” watch over him with an OPEN EYE, while he dreams and sleeps? LOL. In this video at least. Keeping an open eye.

  • Lisa

Excellent ad! I am very proud of AI to come up with this. They needed to step forward into today’s time and it seem’s they are starting to.

I also don’t think David has to disassociate himself from AI. Carrie embraces AI & it has not hurt her one iota seeing as how she is the most successful Idol to date.

Hurt his rock cred? Na. What he puts out on his cd’s now and in the future will make or break his *rock cred*.

    Really nice ad.

  • sleepyinsomniac

When he was lying on the bed, there were 3 eyes

What’s more is that the 3rd eye is vertical. And huge. And open. (And before people wonder if this is an attack on tattoos, it’s not. I just get freaked out by this one in particular.)

Great observation though about how they are showing him without the “this is a family show” filter but more like the budding rockstar that he is.

As for his fans wanting him to move away from the AI association, I think that at this point it’s impossible since he IS the reigning AI champ. He’s going to be in the background. He’ll probably make an appearance. So at this point, he’s going to be mentioned in the show as much as they can anyway. So the best thing for him at this stage is get some mileage from it, which IMO, is what he is going to get by appearing in these ads.

  • Garnetstar

    I have ideas about a third eye, but they arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t very politeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦
    or maybe heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a Mason?

WJMTV I literally just snorted juice laughing at your post. I was a thinkin it, but I wasana gonna post it.

GuylinerFTW or not. It depends. I don’t like it in concert when he’s all sweaty and stuff……yeah sorry… But in a dramatic commercial like this meh it’ all right dog.

  • Trina

See, I don’t think he will shake the AI stigma anytime soon…and to be honest that’s ok with me. I think he mentioned in an interview he would be performing at the opening of the AI theme park, he’s performing at a Disney parade. Rock cred may take some time. Even more so seeing how they’re using him to promote AI to this extent I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t make an appearance or two this upcoming season. I rather see him get good promotion with 19′s full backing rather than try and shake it off. Cred and all that stuff can come in due time. I’m still appalled at how Taylor got snubbed so for me this is nice to see and I’m happy he’s getting support from them.

  • leome

I also donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think David has to disassociate himself from AI. Carrie embraces AI & it has not hurt her one iota seeing as how she is the most successful Idol to date.

Hurt his rock cred? Na. What he puts out on his cdà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s now and in the future will make or break his *rock cred*.

Word to this. He comes from AI and he has been embraced by many people despite that. I don’t see it as a problem at all. The music and what he does will speak for him and whatever cred people like to talk about.

And I hope he got that Director’s contact for a future music video…

  • bluejeans

He WON American Idol. I don’t think he can distance himself from it. And right now, he doesn’t need to.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    I like!

    Hate the eye, though. Creepy….

  • Garnetstar

Cred Shmed. If we’re talkin about that nebulous idea of Rock Cred I don’t think he will every be able to attain that. Just my opinion and all. But rock cred is kinda hooey to me. If it means you have to be uber serious and have no sense of humor about yourself or your genre than you can keep your rock cred. I’ll take guyliner and massive ugly eyeball tattoos from a goober from the Midwest over self involved ultra serious rawkers any day of the week.

ETA: Oceana I wasn’t responding to you. Sorry. I think I was just ranting on the general concept of Rock Cred. :)

I agree he, threw it out the window from the moment he agreed to do AI. I for one am happy he did.

  • oceana

The video is hot and works excellently as a “journey” video.

I wasn’t talking about David’s cred but about Idol’s cred. By showcasing a rocker and his tattoo and his guyliner, him in all his glorious scruffiness, they are making a statement not about him, but about themselves, about the Idol show. That it’s not just a squeaky-clean family show, that scruffier musicians are invited to try out. So I think it’s a brilliant video and it’s a departure for the show and the way they usually portray themselves.

I agree that David Cook doesn’t have to disassociate from Idol anytime soon, he’s got plenty of time for that. It’s an honor that they wanted him for this and as a fan, I’m glad they did a good video and not a cheesy one. I was also a fan of Taylor’s and he got a lot of flack for that post-Idol Ford commercial. I’m relieved that this video shows Cookie in a great light, imo, as he is, a guy on a quest, a musician on a journey.

    It’s all good. :cool1_tb:

  • JudyOhio

His picture (screen capture) here doesn’t look right. He looks um, not real, not alive, or something. The wrist eye doesn’t help this particular picture either. It goes by quick in the actual commercial, so it works out ok, but that screen cap is spooky to me. If the screen cap were of the same thing where his eyes were eyes closed, it would be even worse though. ::shiver:: I’m thinking it could be the makeup and his flesh falling back in a lying down pose. dunno.

  • hardkandy

Hurt his rock cred? Na. What he puts out on his cdà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s now and in the future will make or break his *rock cred*.

I may get flamed for this but I think David Cook through out all his rock cred out the window the moment he auditioned for AI. Real rock purists don’t listen to Daughtry, Hinder, Nickelback, or even Matchbox Twenty and 3 Doors Down. They won’t touch anything that has AI attached to its name.

But eh, rock cred is overrated anyway. As long as he makes the kind of music he can be proud of, his fans will be happy.

  • oceana

But rock cred is kinda hooey to me. If it means you have to be uber serious and have no sense of humor about yourself or your genre than you can kept your rock cred. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll take guyliner and massive ugly eyeball tattoos from a goober from the Midwest over self involved ultra serious rawkers any day of the week.

I totally agree, I think a lot of that “rock cred” junk is overblown. You can’t label people and put them in convenient little boxes. I love that Cookie’s a word nerd as well as a super hot sexy guy with a powerful voice. He’s as rough as he needs to be, he’s as down to earth as anyone could want. He can sing rock and he can sing ballads. He’s a guy who cries and who feels.

I think what gives musicians credibility is their long-term careers and what they produce over a period of time. It’s not something that can be bought cheaply with a scowl or a million tattooes. I hate it when reviewers are overly picky about who’s a “real rocker” and who’s not, too. People find it easier to place labels than to think outside the box.

I think the show, Idol, tries to gain credibility for itself within the industry as not just a cookie-cutter idolmaker, but as a show that discovers real talent. They do that in a lot of ways. This video sent a subtle message that I think contributes to the image they want to portray. But then I like to analyze media.

  • Lisa

Hey oceana, I was not coming down on ya! LOL I get what you are talking about.

Bottom line for me is that David is making the kind of cd’s that I personally want to buy asap. I also am in the group of loving LO. Heck David has such a phenomenal voice he could probably sing wish upon a star or MOTN and I would love it.

Oh wait, he did and I do, lol, but there are also a couple from Idol I did not care for at all and a couple on the cd that are not my type. I’m still loving Shaving Cream & of course LO, plus a few others. I am extremely happy with my cd purchases which is saying something for me.

  • CookieLove1983

I loved the commercial. I think its really cool they used David to promote the new season. Hopefully other rockers will be inspired to audition. He looked very sexy lying in bed, LOL!

  • FolkFan

I doubt that you’ll get flamed for that opinion, hardkandy. Hell, Rob Cavallo basically said something like that in that EW profile—even if he should be on rock radio, he’s concerned that rock radio will shun him.

I have hopes that over time, some portions of rock will become more open to him and his music. The Alice Cooper radio interview about a week ago was promising in that regard—after DC got off the phone, Cooper said “I love that kid and I’m definitely going to push him.” But, yeah—he traded off rock cred that his music might have had on its own in order to get the chance to have his music heard.

So, I don’t think he’s hurt himself at all by doing the commercial, as it turns out to be really well done and not at all cheesy.

  • aly

I was just get used to a LITTLE guyliner, now this. My goodness
he has a full face of make-up, including his lips. He doesn’t
need this goop. It makes him look like he is trying to hard to
    be hot.

  • oceana

I may get flamed for this but I think David Cook through out all his rock cred out the window the moment he auditioned for AI. Real rock purists donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t listen to Daughtry, Hinder, Nickelback, or even Matchbox Twenty and 3 Doors Down. They wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t touch anything that has AI attached to its name.

But eh, rock cred is overrated anyway. As long as he makes the kind of music he can be proud of, his fans will be happy.

I’m glad you added that last paragraph. :) Because rock cred is indeed overrated and way too narrowly defined. I couldn’t give a flying “f” about “rock purists”, whoever they are. That said, I can understand people’s skepticism about the show American Idol, which is a manipulative show in many ways, and which makes me cringe even as I watch it. It’s a double-edged sword, that show is.

There is a certain stigma from being on the show but if you put out music that people enjoy, they will buy it, and everyone is happy. Except perhaps the rock purists. :smoke_tb:

Bands like Daughtry and Nickelback have mega-fans and so phooey on the naysayers. There’s so many rock genres now, and different forms of rock, and it all appeals to someone. To call any rock “pure rock” and call the rest “less pure” is meaningless to me, just another way to label music instead of appreciating it.

I’m a lifelong fan of John Lennon and Bob Dylan, I think they would be considered “pure rock” but I also like Daughtry, Nickelback and David Cook, and I’m not stuck in some rut that doesn’t allow me to venture out and widen my musical horizens. There’s great music being made every day and I’m not going to decide what labels to apply to it, I’m just going to buy it if it speaks to me, and screw the purists.

  • Jolene

Rock cred is earned over time, and usually you can only tell someone had it in retrospect or a few years and albums in. Rock cred is the last thing I’m worried about right now. As long as David sells well, it’s entirely secondary, plus I don’t think there’s much he can do to get it, other than be himself. Daughtry has distanced himself from AI, and I don’t think he has any rock cred.

Oh, just had to say about the eye tat – I think the reason they used it there is because it grabs your attention, makes you wonder about it… exactly as we’re doing here. That’s very valuable when all you have is 60 seconds to make an impact.

  • jnd1221

WOW, that’s a really terrific ad. I was expecting it to be super cheesy, but it’s not at all. It’s still so amazing to see how far he’s come over the past year or so, and I’m so glad. Couldn’t have happened for a nicer guy.

  • smartcookie

I think I read somewhere that DC explained the eye tat on his wrist as being a reminder to himself that eyes are always on him now. Kind of similar to the handcuffed-star necklace, about the tradeoff of fame.

  • oceana

    My goodness
he has a full face of make-up, including his lips. He doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t
need this goop. It makes him look like he is trying to hard to
    be hot.

:lol_tb: I don’t think he’s trying too hard at all. He’s a theatrical guy, and when he’s on stage or making a video, his flamboyant side comes out, and I dig it. :tongue1_tb: He was majoring in musical theater before he switched to graphic arts. I love the makeup on him. It’s sexy.

  • CathyMK

Great commercial. It looks to me like AI is trying to use David to increase their own rock cred. LOL It says a lot about how he’s already viewed by people in the music industry, and in general, that they think his story in particular will draw people in.

  • oceana

It looks to me like AI is trying to use David to increase their own rock cred.

Exactly. I’m not worried about David’s cred. He will prove himself as an artist and earn respect, it doesn’t happen overnight though.

  • Mia

Ahem..sorry to chime in again but I don’t think the rather luscious lips and clear skin are make up. He has nice skin and the hue of his lips is because of lens filters, graphic manipulation. It’s a deliberate warm color palatte. It ties in with green hotel wall, yellow light.

  • Jocelin

I never noticed the tat before until now. It’s cool in a very off beat way. My boyfriend has one that’s kind of similar on his lower leg, signifying self-awareness, caution and direction.

  • Garnetstar

Mia…yeah. When you stare at pictures of David, as one does, you realize that he has ridiculously clear, moisturized, even looking skin. I hate him for that. Seriously I do.

Post whore that I am tonight I will just state again that I lurve this tv add. If I didn’t know this was a commercial for AI I would totally want to see this show.

  • Jolene

Ahem..sorry to chime in again but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think the rather luscious lips and clear skin are make up. I agree with that. They may have used some make up, but if they did I couldn’t tell because DC really does have perfect skin. As for his lips, I think it’s the filters. All of the colors in the room look very vibrant. In any case, I really love the way he looks here. I think it creates a nice contrast with the clips from Idol when he was still with the old haircut and all.

  • FolkFan

He definitely had on guyliner, but in theory, this was just before he left to perform, and DC does wear guyliner on stage. I didn’t particularly notice any other makeup.

  • cheese

My local FOX affiliate just did a behind-the-scenes look at David’s commercial and an interview with him. He said he was looking forward to having his life flash before his eyes when he gets to see the finished product. They asked him about Kara and he called her a “great musical mind” again.

I think David looks fine – that’s how he looks when he’s about to go on stage, at least post-Idol. I’m happy that they didn’t try to cover up his tattoo or make him change his usual look. They didn’t do anything to his skin or lips – he’s just pretty that way.

  • Lisa

I have to add the moment in the ad where David appears on the stage silloutted in lights is brilliant. What a great showcase they made of David. That moment is exactly like the producer said, a rush. Makes me almost get weepy, lol.

  • Lisa

heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just pretty that way

That boy is downright purty and the camera eats him up.

  • waffle

Just wondering if aside from this site (and thanks for posting the ad here, MJ, I can’t wait to get home so I can watch it), has anyone actually seen the commercial on tv? I hope FOX plays it often. Do AI commercials usually have a lot of air time?

  • Jolene

Oh, I have to add one more thing – it’s not just the tat and the guyliner and David’s outfit that are true in the comemercial to who he is… I’m almost sure I also spotted the elf boots!

My local FOX affiliate just did a behind-the-scenes look at Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s commercial and an interview with him.

Any chance this will pop up online? *grabby hands*

  • Lisa

LOL Jolene and yes you did, lol. Hard to miss them in that rain shot.

  • hypertwink

As for his lips, I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the filters. All of the colors in the room look very vibrant.

I think the process is called over/saturation. As many have said, colors tend to become deeper/richer/emphasized. That’s probably why the eyeliner looks heavy and his lips look redder than usual.

ETA: I wonder how an ad with Carrie or Kelly would look. Also, I have a feeling we won’t be seeing Daughtry this year, since Idol wouldn’t want to split the attention between two rockers.

  • Lisa

If they do any ads of the past winners we can almost bet if they do one for Season 5 it will probably be Daughtry and they will have Taylor driving his limo…….

  • oceana

That’s my favorite part. Right there that’s when I got chills. I think whoever shot this commercial should just do his next video.

    ROTFL!! Sad but true.

That other commercial that was shown tonight.. someone on DCO pointed out the backdrop
    http://www.davidcookofficial.com/content/david-backdrop-ai-commercial-tonight-omg
Look at where Taylor is. Sad. Lame. He’s almost out in the hallway.

  • teenie

This commercial is made of win. It has all this synergy. Cook looks cool and magnetic, the music is dynamic, the editing rushes through a journey, then boom eyes open, grabs the guitar and hits the stage lights. American Idol over his head. It’s fantastic. Cook makes the show look cool and the commercial shows how he evolved into a star on their show. It’s a win/win.

  • JudyOhio

I don’t really know all that much about rock cred, but it seems it would help if they would put his album under rock instead of pop (at itunes anyway). They started it out under rock then switched it to pop. I hear both on the album, but even still, being under rock could help maybe.

  • s3rious

    Fantastic Commercial! Made of Win!

    David Cook -> Rockstar!

  • FolkFan

I don’t see how the way itunes categorizes things makes much of a difference. I doubt that rock radio looks at it. Plus, itunes categorization is so often completely random. At some point, I looked at how songs in my itunes database were categorized, and it often made absolutely no sense. Unless it was something extremely clearcut, like country, it seemed pretty random.

  • sma11ie

The Alice Cooper radio interview about a week ago was promising in that regardà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ after DC got off the phone, Cooper said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I love that kid and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m definitely going to push him.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Ooh, I heard about this, is there a link or DL somewhere?

ETA: LOVE the commercial, and MJ you rock for capturing it!

  • JOJOSIE

I also think Carrie would be the next if there is a next as she like Cook is managed by Simon Fuller. Every award show I seen her in she thanks Simon Fuller. Taylor gets no respect because he’s the only Idol that at least didn’t start out with 19. I think he thought they were money grabbers and didn’t want them involved in his tour. His tour I’m sure was more profitable than his record. Speaking of tours I wonder if Cook will do a solo tour like Taylor. He doesn’t seem like an opening act at this stage, but what do I know.

  • FolkFan

Re: Alice Cooper: last I checked, they hadn’t posted a podcast for it. It would be great if they did—I missed the first couple of minutes, but what I did hear was great. He totally treated DC as a peer.

Someone on DC played the commercial backwards. The music in the background that is playing while everything reverses and then he remembers the Idol journey? The musical intro to LO, being played backwards.

  • elisad

I don’t want David to tour with other people, like, anyone, ever. According to Neal they most possibly will do a solo tour. We’ll just wait and see.

I wanna buy the promo on iTunes LOL.

  • smartcookie

I can’t believe I’ve already watched that commercial six or seven times, and now I want freeze-frame.

Sad (but fun) to be so obsessed with a 60-second commercial.

  • JudyOhio

I think he’d be great in a solo tour. He has experience performing before in a band, and during the idol tour, he was really good with the audience. Seems a natural for him to me.

  • kathrynTX

LOVE IT! I’ve never seen a commercial like this (this current and edgy and rock-y) for Idol. YAY Idol people! Yes, more current and cool. So someone sold them a clue? Or something…. Not that it will make me watch this season. Maybe. Who knows.

Mr. Cook looks great. I bet he had lots o’ fun making this commercial. Good for him! Very cool. Love the outfit, the makeup, the little journey, the “David……….COOK!” moment, all of it. Very nice. Cool commercial. Nice Cook. As always.

  • CRB

    He needs more makeup!

  • daenarys

    Naww, he’s purrr-fect!

Thanks for the vid, mj. I blinked and missed it.

  • cookmerized

how many times can i watch this before admitting i have a david cook problem?

  • GEEK4VOCAB

What a fantastic commercial! WELL FREAKING DONE American Idol!

I was iffy on the eye tattoo at first but I think it looks awesome in this commercial. Super cool!

I can’t stop watching it either!

  • s3rious

    Amazing, amazing, AMAZING!

  • blissful

That was really well done! I wonder if it’s due to Simon Cowell’s influence?

  • sabby_rina

    WOW!

  • Michelle

THE EYE *compels* you to watch the next season of Idol… ;)

Very cool! Goosebumps! Ryan announcing the winner and making me feel all fuzzy again! thank you MJ for posting since no way was I gonna sit thru hours of Fox programming to catch the commercial.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, David Cook was an absolute gift to Idol. I’m glad that it seems they appreciate him.

  • Dlynne

I love it. He really is a gift.

  • Dlynne

Folkfan, are you saying that the music throughout most of the commercial is Light On played backwards? That is so cool! I love the way it sounds, too – it’s a bit haunting.

  • Lisa

I wanna buy the promo on iTunes LOL.

Sadly, so do I. What exactly does that say about me? LOL

  • Jolene

Someone on DC played the commercial backwards. The music in the background that is playing while everything reverses and then he remembers the Idol journey? The musical intro to LO, being played backwards.

    That? I so freaking cool.

Any chance anybody saw the backstage coverage of the shoot of this commercial that cheese mentioned? Sometimes they upload these things to the local Fox affiliate websites, so if anybody knows where to look, I’m sure some of us would like to watch it.

  • May

Any chance anybody saw the backstage coverage of the shoot of this commercial that cheese mentioned?

Jolene I think you’re referring to this (sorry not good with neat links):

    http://www.myfoxla.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=7959673&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=1.1.1

  • noctem seizure

They couldn’t have covered up the eye? How hard is it to put him in long sleeves?

  • Jolene

Jolene I think youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re referring to this

Thank you! I love that they did the behind the secens thing and that they used some of the time to plug his new album. Win-win indeed.

They couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have covered up the eye? How hard is it to put him in long sleeves?

It’s definitely there because they wanted it there. David didn’t have to have his hands behind his head, the tat didn’t have to be on display (it’s been covered up for all of the other appearances), and as someone else said already, they could’ve just had different lighting if they wanted to hide it.
I think showing it was intentional, and I think it was to draw attention (which it does) and maybe something to do with David’s image as a rocker.

  • noctem seizure

I also think it was intentional, and I get the metaphor. I just don’t like the decision to expose it (of course, I also hate the tattoo). It’s an excellent commercial, but to me, some people may be distracted and come away with a reaction of nothing more than, “Whoa, that’s a freaky tat!”….

  • erennick

I have chills!!! What a great commercial!

    Thanks for posting MJ.

  • Jolene

I uploaded the Fox interview from the Commercial shoot to YT, so everyone will find it easily: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF8jhRhOSBM

About the tat, just like the makeup discussion, I don’t think the casual viewer will care that much, it’s more the over invested fans and non-fans who dissect these minor aspects. As a whole, I think it’s a very compelling, strong commercial and I have no doubt it’ll be a positive thing for both David and Idol.

  • oceana

I didn’t even notice the tattoo in watching the video, only when seeing the still shot. It’s rather intriguing.

I wish they would sell this on itunes, lol. Great video, well done.

  • WestiesRule

FOX did a great job. They have a gold mine in DC and I’m happy to see they are smart enough to see it. Initially, I thought I was hearing things on listen 1 and wondered why they were using pieces of Light On. I’m happy to “hear” they were playing it backwards.

  • noctem seizure

I hope it doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t backfire on Cookie – as he does need to disassociate himself from Idol at some point, but not necessarily now.

The positives outweigh the negatives. The commercial isn’t designed to appeal to those who hate American Idol. No commercial could make those people want to watch it or to embrace an artist who got their start from the show.

The commercial, from DC’s perspective, reconnects him to the portion of the AI audience who liked him while he was on their TV screens but forgot about him after the season, others in his prime demos who are also of the demos who used to watch AI in previous years but don’t as much anymore (e.g. women in their 20s), and other viewers who still aren’t interested enough to actually watch the program but like pop rock with an infectious hook, and will search “David Cook” the next time they log on to Itunes because they heard a snippet from the chorus from a song they hadn’t heard before and can’t get it out of their head now.

As others have said, the spot also burnishes AI’s image. It benefits the show to have Cook promoting it, and the benefits to Cook himself to do so outweigh his debits.

  • frogcooke

Thats a pretty good commercial… but that eye tattoo still kinda creeps me out LOL

  • Jolene

I wish they would sell this on itunes, lol. Great video, well done.

Me too. If anyone finds/has HQ download, please let us know. This is good enough that I want to save it.

PS – I didn’t think so earlier, but now I wouldn’t be surprised if they used LO as the going away song on Idol. Do they usually go with a song sung by a previous winner, or should we not expect that? Last year it was Ruben and not Jordin, so…

  • dtrow

The juxaposition of David/David in that commercial/screen cap is amazing. A boy at 24 and a man at 25. He has changed so much. The pressure of Idol turned him into a diamond IMO.

  • http://idolstages.com Connie D.

Love the commercial, still can’t get used to the repulsive wrist tat.

  • Dr. Tracey

That’s the best AI commercial ever.

  • Suzanne

Agree with everyone about the eye tattoo. It’s not an obvious message so it is kind of freaky.

I think it’s an incredible commercial for the show and to promote DC. It’s a very inspirational ad for watching the show this year, and 19 really needs a successful male winner, so I think the DC promotion is a great idea. Frankly, when his CD is gold, and then again when it’s platinum, they should announce it on the show with fanfare.

When Kelly Clarkson won, it was important for her to breakaway from the show b/c it was a lame Star Search thing to the music industry back then. Now AI has become this institution that the music industry has to cope with and use to their advantage (like getting on the AI finale). Also, the more people who come out of AI who are successful songwriters (Daughtry, soon DC, maybe even DA–his next single is a honey and he’s a co-writer), the better for the show.

You know, I kind of don’t get what happened with Taylor Hicks in the music industry. He writes music, plays instruments and can sing. His CD wasn’t fantastic, but it had a couple of very good songs on it (the runaround; just to feel that way). Why didn’t the label work with him to progress his career?

  • luci

That ad is one word awesome

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

The commercial really is nothing but good. Can’t go wrong, either way.

I seem to recall him telling a fan during the tour that the tattoo represented “beauty and tranquility.”

Anyway…I just don’t like pictures of big, fat eyeballs, I don’t care whose wrist it’s on… :laugh_tb: But, it is very representative of who he is and who he’s becoming, so why hide it?

  • noctem seizure

You know, I kind of donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get what happened with Taylor Hicks in the music industry. He writes music, plays instruments and can sing. Why didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the label work with him to progress his career?

The sense I get is that Taylor wasn’t the easiest person to work with. So that’s one part of it.

The other part is just a theory of mine that I’ve mentioned here before, but I don’t think 19 was comfortable with Mr. Hicks being the face of AI from a branding perspective. A graying, Caucasian soul singer wasn’t who Idol wanted to see out there as its standard-bearer. So, it was worth it to them to them to have him disappear even if they sacrificed a bit higher financial returns in the process.

If not for the emergence of Dial Idol, of course, they could have just gotten rid of him any time they wanted. But, DI showed Taylor winning week after week after week. My thought is that’s why they decided to actually follow the votes and send Chris D. home.

It would have been interesting, though, if they would have kept Chris around, to see if he would have beaten Taylor head-to-head. It would have been easy enough to do as DI showed Chris in last place by less than a point the night he exited. And in a one-on-one, it seems like Daughtry would have picked up a lot of votes in the finale.

Then again, I thought Archie would beat Cook mano-a-mano too, even though Cook pretty clearly was winning the weeks from F7 on. So, perhaps the notion of casual votes and finale-only-voters making much of a difference in the end is misplaced.

  • Lisa

    Thank You MJ!

  • teenie

I wonder if the same makers of the Emmy winning “David Cook goes home “segment did this video. It has that same visceral energy to it. Aside from the usual 19 marketing reasons, maybe the success of that AI segment inspired how they put and edited this one together.

  • hollygo9

With his pretty pretty face on display there, who’s looking at his wrist?

  • Jolene

Then again, I thought Archie would beat Cook mano-a-mano too, even though Cook pretty clearly was winning the weeks from F7 on. So, perhaps the notion of casual votes and finale-only-voters making much of a difference in the end is misplaced.

Now you got me missing the Grassy Knoll. Good times.
I sort of wish I can get as involved again this season so I’d care enough, because half the fun in watching Idol were the crazy conspiracy theories and manipulations people went on about, but OTOH – remains to be seen if any other contestant can have the same impact on me that DC had. I sort of doubt it.

Which, I think, might be my only problem with this commercial – it makes me want to watch Idol to see David, but David won’t be there this season. So really – it makes me want to rewatch Season 7.

  • ziggy

    Absolutely fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Garnetstar

Superficial Post ahead: His eyes look especially Green in this ad, No? Just me? Ok…

I haven’t thought about Taylor for awhile. I was not a fan but I did not have hate either. It is kinda sad that they have a plant in front of his pic. Seriously? I don’t know what happened with him at all. I know he was a contestant that did not hide his opinion about 19Evil. Didn’t he try to stage a coup of some sort regarding the signing of the contract. I don’t think they had a problem with him representing AI. I mean they have Ruben and he is not a traditional idol and they love him. Did he not do the kick off song last year? I think it might be Tay Tay’s tude that did him in.

I am not sure if any of David’s tunes will be used as a kick off song. None of his songs are as straight forward as Celebrate me Home by Ruben or Home by Daughtry. Well, I’ll take that back, The Had a Bad Day song was a little quirky. Shrugs. I am a post whore. Yeah. A few days off to post to my hearts content and I go crazy.

  • oceana

With his pretty pretty face on display there, whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s looking at his wrist?

I’m with you, Holly. I don’t find the tattoo all that big of a deal. It actually doesn’t look like an eye. It looks like the tao sign. He said it represented à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“beauty and tranquility”? That would fit with the tao sign. Maybe it’s an eye and the tao sign combined? Or it could be some kind of “third eye” which is meaningful in eastern religions.

I never knew the tattoo would arouse so much reaction. Seems that everything Cookie does becomes controversal lately. Myself I don’t even like tattoos, but for him I could change my mind. :laugh_tb:

  • jenni

    Re: The Taylor thing.

I believed Simon when he said he didn’t care which David won this year. He saw what panned out to be true: they are both remarkably talented, marketable young men. TPTB never wanted Taylor to win, flat out. He didn’t have the look they wanted, he wasn’t someone they could market to the mainstream and they cut their loses.

Both Davids very much have the look for their respective genres, both fall into a very popular niche in music and obviously, they’re both getting a lot of love from Idol. It doesn’t hurt that they’re both very talented either, of course!

I think it’s not gender that decides who is the next Taylor Hicks. It’s marketability. I think they learned their lesson regarding that and have generally kept people that didn’t have at least some aspect that they could sell out of the top 12 since then. YMMV of course.

Onto the topic at hand of Cook, I can definitely see “Light On” as being the departure song on AI. They didn’t use Jordin because she didn’t really have anything that would work for it, I’m sure, and LO has that whole theme of distance and it does mention home so I can see it.

  • oceana

I followed Taylor’s career for awhile after the show. It seemed that Idol practically disowned him right after the show, and latched on to Chris instead, seemingly wanting to hook themselves up with a winner, and it was obvious that Chris was going to be a big success.

Meanwhile, they hardly promoted him and even the next season you could barely see his face in the backdrop. Simon, and I believe also Nigel, made derogatory comments about Taylor right from the end of the show – or so it seemed to me.

I like the cd and there are several songs I still have on my ipod. Runaway was not a good song imo. But others were. It seemed like everyone turned against him and he became a has-been before he even had a chance. He had more sales than Jordan but nobody put her down the way they did Taylor.

I think it’s because: 1) he had gray hair, 2) Idol was embarrassed that Chris hadn’t won so they wanted to disassociate themselves from Taylor, 3) his music didn’t fit into an obvious genre, and 4) that damn Ford commercial didn’t help.

I never heard anything about him being hard to work with. Just that he was a bit reserved with the other Idols, except Chris and Elliott, who I think were his buds on the show. He’s kind of shy and introverted, seems to me, but a down-to-earth, polite, nice guy.

His first single, Just to Feel That Way, wasn’t the best song on the cd but it was a decent song. I liked it. I didn’t know why it didn’t chart at all. He got a bad rap right away. I think a lot of people dumped on him because he was kind of goofy, and because their favorites didn’t win.

I always felt bad about how it went for him. He’s been working on a 2nd cd, and I hope for the best for him. I think he’s still happy that he can do what he loves to do and make a living at it. Not everyone has to be a superstar in order to be a success. This is all just my perspective on Taylor.

  • kathrynTX

Good commercial for AI. Why does Cook have to distance himself from AI? He’s got a career going fullspeed ahead right now. And it really got a HUGE ginormous kick-start from AI. He knows that. He was headed that direction, just much more slowly, as he kinda said. Good commercial for AI and more exposure for Cook. Yeah, makes me want to watch AI too, in hopes of finding another David Cook! Ain’t gonna happen, there can be only one. hee. So I am conflicted about watching right now. I am still so invested in Cook, I don’t have the time or energy to invest in another. And I suspect I will only be disappointed. But ya never know!

I like his tats. I was thinking of getting one myself. BWHAHAHAHAHHAHA! Gawd, I’m an idiot over this guy…I’m too old for this.

  • oceana

YMMV of course.

Jenni, I think you added some insight into what happened to Taylor. Simon, for instance, definitely didn’t want him to win, and was quite bitter about it. (The funny thing to me is that Simon often gets it wrong anyway. He said “no” to Chris Daughtry in the audition, “no” to David Cook in Hollywood, and he didn’t warm up to Kelly Clarkson until towards the end of season 1 when he finally realized what a gem she was. He also said “no” emphatically to Taylor, but he was overrode by Paula and Randy, and I think all those times he was wrong ate away at him and had something to do with the way he put Taylor down afterwards (many times). He also didn’t like Clay Aiken and he put him down publicly many times after season 2 ended. Simon’s an interesting person.)

Onto the topic at hand of Cook, I can definitely see à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as being the departure song on AI. I can totally see it too. That would be cool if they use it. They used Daughtry’s song, and that was cool too.

  • FolkFan

The eye tattoo is definitely my least favorite of his tattoos, but I’m okay with it.

DC is not Taylor Hicks iin terms of the marketability of his music—I get the sense that Taylor’s music, overall, is better suited to an independent label than to a major label—and everyone seems to view DC as doing a great job of walking the line between insisting on his artistic point of view and being easy to work with. He seems to have a good sense for when to compromise and when not to.

The more I think about this commercial, the more I like it. It is selling DC as a successful artist. And it is selling AI as this place where you might see some person walk through the door at the auditions—bad hair, a bit messy, etc.—and see that person walk off the stage at the finale as a superstar. As the recapper for TWoP said at some point, that really is what AI is selling: this concept that you could watch someone’s dreams come true. And, by God, they captured that in a one-minute spot.

  • LK08

Well done commericial. As a DA fan, I am way over David not winning, but there are those that still aren’t over it who will be sore seeing the “and the winner is” David. . . . . . Cook over and over again. I am not sure how that will translate for them.

  • FolkFan

Oh, and, yes, the music being played during the flashback/reverse portion of the commercial is the musical intro to LO being played backwards.

And one other piece of Cookie news: Thanks to another couple of days of big increases in Audience Impressions, LO has moved up 35 spots to #99 on Hot 100 Airplay charts, before recurrents are removed. And that’s even with Christmas music making huge inroads into the top 100. Assuming that he maintains or improves that position, LO would definitely be somewhere on the Hot 100 Airplay chart next week.

  • fallforever

I’ve gone back and watched this a few times, and it seems very clear that AI is targeting their ‘lost’ demographic: the young, and especially males.

The shots of the trappings of fame: limo, papparazzi, crowds, the beauteous babe giving Dave the eye, the luxury hotel room. The cool dudes outside his room who say ‘Love you, man’.

Then they’re simultaneously running the other, stupid ad featuring the bikini bimbo contestant (singing in front of a big shot of DC).

Smart, really. I just wonder if they can hold this audience’s interest once the show reverts to it’s same old self.

  • jenni

I don’t think it necessarily has to be a negative for them, LK08. It might get casual fans thinking about DA again too in a “I voted for that other guy, maybe I should check out his CD” kind of thing. For a lot of casual viewers, the David VS David thing means that they’re tied together in their minds and it might get people thinking about Archie too as they are reminded of last season.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I never heard anything about him being hard to work with.

Taylor hard to work with? Yes, I’ve heard stories. From several different sources. Damn, if I didn’t hear yet another story a few days ago, this time regarding his stint on Broadway.

Putting that aside, even if they had tried hard to market that first record in Pop and HAC, it would have never been a huge hit in those formats. There is nothing on that record that sounds like what’s on the radio these days.

Season 7′s Top 2 are both highly marketable and will sell more records in the coming months. Their success will have a positive effect on Season 8 ratings, I think. The show may not see the highs of Season 5, but I think the ratings may improve over last year’s numbers.

  • hypertwink

I love how they distilled AI into the tag, “The Dream Begins Again in January.” Because despite all the conspiracy theories and the horrible auditions, that is what Idol means to many of these kids. A dream. The Dream. It happened with Kelly, with Carrie, and definitely with David. So I’m glad that they featured his fairytale which in 60 seconds is probably a mini emotional upheaval for him and for many of his fans.

but there are those that still arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t over it who will be sore seeing the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“and the winner isà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ David. . . . . . Cook over and over again.

As you said it yourself, there are people who still haven’t gotten over it. So whether or not Fox/19 features that moment, it still wouldn’t endear David Cook or AI to those people that resent what happened last May.

  • oceana

Oh I totally agree. David’s music is better and his songwriting skills are amazing, his voice is also miles beyond Taylor’s, and DC’s music is a lot more mainstream. I don’t compare them, nobody’s comparing them. The subject went to Taylor for some reason and it was a discussion that didn’t have anything to do with David really. Thanks for clarifying that we are not comparing David to Taylor. And I totally agree that both Davids this season are immensely talented and will have successful careers. It was an especially rich season I thought (as I also liked Jason, Michael, Brooke).

Also I’m enjoying the analysis of the video. Carry on ladies.

  • oceana

You know, that crossed my mind too while watching the video. I almost wish that moment wasn’t in the video, yet it had to be there, to show the journey and what happened.

I say this because I was a fan of Clay’s during season 2 and I was devastated when he didn’t win. And in the ensuing years I must have seen that video of him and Ruben and the confetti a million times. It still pops up everywhere. I’m past that now, but I understand how it feels to see that painful moment repeated again and again. But it just comes with the Idol territory and is unavoidable.

What I realized since then is that it really, truly doesn’t matter who comes in first. I mean that with utter sincerity. I thought that Daughtry was lucky not to win, as it gave him more freedom to do his thing, and less scrutiny or expectations, and also possibly more “rock cred” that he didn’t win. Sometimes the winner has to do things that can be corny, like Taylor with that Ford commercial, or things that a rocker like Daughtry might not really have chosen to do. So I think it worked out great for him.

I wanted DC to win just to enjoy that moment on stage when he won, but really I hoped he wouldn’t win, as I thought he would get less pressure if he didn’t, and more freedom to make the cd he wanted to make, etc. Who’s to say how it should work out? I felt sorry for Taylor that he was expected to do better and he also had to bear the brunt of winning when he wasn’t Daughtry or Elliott or Cat, while I think if he had come in 2nd or 3rd people wouldn’t have paid so much attention to what he did. And we all know what happened to Jennifer Hudson with the oscar, until the terrible family tragedy turned her luck to bad.

I think people who have watched the show for several years mostly know it doesn’t really matter who wins, it’s what they do afterwards that counts. It doesn’t predict how much success they’ll have in their careers. In some ways it’s a lot to live up to and a lot to live down. It’s a mixed bag, so it’s not really anything to feel bad about if your favorite doesn’t win. I do know that now, and I would have been just as happy if DC had come in 2nd.

I got such an eerie feeling watching this commercial again because it suddenly reminded me of a promo that was being shown last year for season 7. Hollywood week, DC singing that Bryan Adams song when you hear Simon saying “that was incredible”and I think the words “the best is yet to come” or something like that flashed on the screen. Does anyone happen to have that?

I love this commercial the more and more I watch it. This is exactly what AI was always about; how they always described the show early on..”the search for a superstar”. They really did take a diamond in the rough and worked some magic. His journey always reminded me of Kelly’s so much. One of the interviews from KC yesterday the newsperson asked him what he had to be thankful for and he said “that American Idol thing”. I bet.

  • oceana

Folkfan, thanks for the news about Light On moving up on the charts. I think the song is getting legs. And Declaration is nipping right at its heels. I think this coming year or two is going to be a fun ride.

Trina, that commercial is impressive. They managed to convey much in a short time. I hope his next music video can be like that! :cool2_tb:

  • tinawina

Wow, that was well done. Cool commercial! The cookie love never ends around here – lol – we’re on page 4 of comments over a 1 minute ad. I love it. lmao.

Trina, that commercial was on YouTube, and now I can’t find it. I can’t remember the title it had, so either I’m using the wrong search words or it got pulled.
Anyway, the best I could find was this video. It only has David’s singing parts from the original commercial, without Simon’s “That was incredible”, though.

  • FolkFan

Yeah, we Cook fans sure do like to talk a lot. Also, we seem to have plenty of bandwidth.

  • Tatiana

Well done commericial. As a DA fan, I am way over David not winning, but there are those that still arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t over it who will be sore seeing the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“and the winner isà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ David. . . . . . Cook over and over again. I am not sure how that will translate for them.

This is a really good point. I didn’t watch the commercial because I thought it might be annoying to me as a DA fan, and yes as soon as someone mentioned that DC’s winning moment was once again shown, I was so glad I didn’t watch!
And “Light On” may be featured as the going home song? ummm….yeah I had been hesitant to watch this year because of what happened and not wanting to be too invested again, but if they are going to use the season to keep pushing and promoting Cook … yeah I think I better stay away.

You know last year I was not thrilled Jordin won but once S7 started there was no mention of the prior season and how it panned out. It let me forget and enjoy the show again. And now I’ve become a fan of Jordin! Doesn’t look like that will happen this year. Oh well!

You are right oceana. Looking at past AI contestants, it doesn’t predict how much success they will have. I wish both of the Davids (and all of AI7 contestants) success.

  • noctem seizure

but there are those that still arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t over it who will be sore seeing the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“and the winner isà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ David. . . . . . Cook over and over again. I am not sure how that will translate for them.

As far as David Cook is concerned, those folks won’t be buying his CD anyway. So it doesn’t affect him at all.

It is possible the ad could cause some individuals who were or are David Archuleta fans last year not to watch AI this year. But, I don’t think Idol has to worry most about disaffected Archuleta fans turning away. If I were them I’d be trying to woo Jason Castro fans right about now.

I do agree that the show shot itself in the foot by presenting the audience with the expectation that Archie was going to win. I can see how some of his fans could then have come away with a “robbed” feeling, but anyone who tracked the online indicators realized that the outcome was anything but a shock upset. And the thing is, David Cook ended up being hurt in some ways in the process too. It was just handled badly all the way around.

  • FolkFan

I agree, noctem. I especially agree that in using the “knockout” storyline to try to make it look like a DC win would be unexpected, the show hurt both Davids, and both Davids’ fanbases. A lot of Cookies were annoyed that their guy’s win was treated as an upset. And it seems like a lot of Archies were hurt because they ended up thinking that Archie’s win was extremely likely after Top 2 performance night, when the truth of the matter is that DC had been beating DA’s vote totals from Top 7 forward.

I also think that AI could use a superstar winner—not a winner who gradually works her way up to platinum (Jordin), and not a lower-placed finisher who kicks ass (Daughtry). I’m sure that they’d love for another one of the Season 7 folks to be successful, particularly DA, who still has connections to 19. But they need to create the perception that winning means something, and that through the show, they can winnow down to a winner who would be a super-successful artist. While Jordin has exceeded expectations, they need another Kelly Clarkson or Carrie in order to establish that the show “works,” in a “select a successful artist” sort of way. So, the fact that the show might simultaneously push DC and use DC to push the show does not surprise me in the least. He is their strongest chance since Carrie to have a superstar winner. Plus, he brings the possibility of increasing the “cool” factor for the show, which they need and want.

My guess is that DA will perform at least once this season on AI—and probably won’t be stuck in the semifinals, like Blake was. And I would not be surprised to see both of the Davids cited by one or more judge in critiquing contestants’ performances this year. So, I don’t think that this is going to be a situation in whicih a non-winner is shunned. (Or, as was the case with Taylor, a winner being shunned.)

  • tinawina

And à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ may be featured as the going home song?

That’s just internet speculation. I wouldn’t worry about that.

Look for Cook to turn up this year about as much as Carrie did in season 5. Some, but not that much. They like to focus more on the next big thing every year.

ETA: I totally agree with Folkfan, Archie will have a presence as well. Both are successful, and Idol likes success.

  • Tatiana

Thanks tinawina, for your reassurance :bye_tb:

  • FolkFan

You know what is cracking me up? I remember seeing reports that DC had wanted to wear a suit on Idol—maybe ALW week? And they pushed him not to do it, and he ultimately didn’t. Now, he’s routinely pulling off the Executive Rock Star look, including on this AI promo.

  • Barbariba

Don’t they give an award for best commercial? If so, this commercial is a sure fire winner!

I wish this sort of thing wouldn’t bother some of Archie’s fans, but I guess it’s natural for some to feel that way. I’m sure some Cook fans would have felt the same way if the outcome had been different. Cook won, so it just makes sense for the show to highlight and promote him heavily as the winner. Unlike Taylor, they actually like Cook. Even so, look at all that Archie has accomplished so far in spite of the fact that he didn’t win. Coming just short of the title of American Idol hasn’t seemed to hurt him any.

I remember being a fan of both Taylor and Elliott during season five. Those were my “boys” all season long, and I really wanted them to be the last two standing at the finale. It didn’t work out that way, and I remember how upset I was when Elliott was eliminated. In retrospect, I think it was a blessing that he came in third. Coming in second may have been the best thing that could have happened to DA. He doesn’t have to deal with kind of pressure and high expectations DC has as the winner. He has already exceeded the expectations many had for him during and immediately following the season. He might not be getting the same level or type of promotion/gigs as Cook, but he still very visible and getting loads of exposure and buzz. He has the full backing and support of his record label. He’s getting to do so many cool things, meet so many cool people and folks that he has admired over the years, gaining tons of experience as a performer, and making some new, lifelong friends. There are so many good things happening for him right now and seems to have a bright future ahead. Maybe this will eventually help lessen the sting and disappointment some of his fans still feel over the outcome of this past season.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Fans who are still pissed 6 months later that their favorite didn’t win aren’t coming along for the ride anyway. Those fans are already lost, so the commercial really doesn’t matter one way or the other as far as those fans are concerned.

Even super-invested fans of Cook will probably not be very interested in Season 8. It seems to work out that way.

As the Claymates used to say, “Idol found, game over.”

I think the commercial is aimed at general audiences to build excitement, and to remind audiences of what the show is supposedly about–making superstars out of young, unknown artists.

    MJ says:
Taylor hard to work with? Yes, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard stories. From several different sources. Damn, if I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hear yet another story a few days ago, this time regarding his stint on Broadway.

    Hi Trina; shell and MJ.

Haven’t commented in A-G-E-S although I read daily ~~ but wanted to follow MJ’s admonitions about the current show but I would like to make a comment about working with Taylor.

I was visiting NY so took in the Grease performance in June and had an opportunity to talk to the crew waiting on the street before the matinee performance. I spoke to 5 different people associated with the show and they ALL had nothing but positive things to say about Taylor. Including that he is easy to work with, generous, humble, and fun. Also, a cast member maintained a blog about the show and also mentioned how excited the cast was about working with Taylor. Not wanting to stir the “soup” just thought this was an interesting counterpoint to the story MJ says she heard a few days ago.

Hope everyone is having a good holiday.

  • Suzanne

Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t they give an award for best commercial? If so, this commercial is a sure fire winner!

Yup–the Cleo Awards. But usually funny/clever commercials win.

thanks for all your insights about Taylor Hicks and 19. I get that they were sort of stuck with him, but it still seems crazy that they seemed to push him into this pop mold that didn’t fit. Kind of doomed from the start. I didn’t know that Just to Feel that Way was a released single. I have it on my ipod–it’s a great song.

Also, I was wondering if you all thought Light On would be the exit song. I don’t really think that there’s another song on DC’s CD that would work for it, and there’s definitely nothing on DA’s CD that would work (except for Desperate, ha ha). Light On will be past its charting prime by February, when they start kicking people off with a montage though.

  • Jolene

Also, I was wondering if you all thought Light On would be the exit song. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really think that thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s another song on DCà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s CD that would work for it

Hmmm… I actually didn’t think LO will work for it either until watching this commercial and how well it played on it.
Other than LO, the only other song I could see as possibly maybe working is A Daily AhtheM, if it’s edited cleverly… Not so much with themes of leaving, but of celebrating the time the contestants did have on the show: “Would you sing my song at the top of your lungs, and we’ll all sing along”. I could see it going well in a montage.
But it’s a long shot. I won’t be surprised if they have a song from someone else entirely, or write a new song specific for the occasion. Does anyone know if Roben’s song came by organically or at Idol’s request?

Oh, something else I’ve been wondering – did any previous winner write a song specifically about the Idol experience? I could really see Life on the Moon, if it was ever to come out as a single, getting a video with a theme similar to this commercial, only with a very different tone.

  • Suzanne

Ruben’s song was a cover of an original from Kenny Loggins–pretty big hit back when.

  • jan

I’m not that familiar with the history of Idol and the exit song so I don’t know if my suggestions makes any sense.

    What about Heroes?

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not going to come down
    Down off of these clouds
All these heroes come and go
    Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re still standing
    Teach me to rise up
    To open my eyes up
All these Heroes come and go
    Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re still standing

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Not wanting to stir the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“soupà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ just thought this was an interesting counterpoint to the story MJ says she heard a few days ago.

I can’t imagine crew are going to say anything negative about Taylor to fans standing outside the stage door asking about him.

    I’ll leave it at that.

My only point is, where there’s smoke there is fire and I’ve heard too many similar stories from too many completely different sources to discount the rumors.

The other point I’d like to make is that when an Idol’s career goes south, fans seem to be quick to blame management and/or the record company, when in fact, I think the reasons are usually a stew of complicated factors.

And à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ may be featured as the going home song?

    Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just internet speculation. I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t worry about that.

See? This is exactly the way rumors start. ;) .

  • teenie

Whoa. I had no idea that was a Loggins song. Good info.

I was a huge Elliott fan and I think the show treated him very well, so I did appreciate watching the following two seasons and the show’s obvious affection for Elliott.

If we’re talking DC’s album I really don’t think some of these contestants are heroes. I can’t imagine Sanjaya’s vote off video to that.

I think Life on the Moon and Come Back to Me’s chorus (what are the lyrics?-”so I hope you’ll find what you’re looking for..yada, yada) could work.
I’ve only listened to the cd twice now, so I really don’t know.

  • Lisa

    About Taylor

    a down-to-earth, polite, nice guy

I too would have described him that way during AI & before I heard things from people who know him. Let’s just say he might have a *public persona*. Taylor made huge waves during AI behind the scenes & it did not make TPTB very happy. That’s all I am sayin’.

I still like Taylor. I still like the public Taylor, I will never know the *real* Taylor. If he puts out a great cd, I will buy it. For it is really is all about the music for me. If Taylor is hard to work with, he is not the first, & he won’t be the last. Another way to look at it is, he know’s what he wants & is commited enough to his career to go after it. Let’s face it, you have to be extremely self confident & have somewhat of an ego to even be on AI. You also have to be driven by something deep inside of you.

Shame on AI for putting up macro pics of Taylor in the audition & being stuck behind a plant. He deserves more respect than that. If they did not like him, that is their problem. The public loved Taylor. The public voted for Taylor to win. The whole AI dissing Taylor left a bad taste in alot of folk’s mouth’s. Mine included. AI (talking to you interns) ever hear of putting personal problems aside? They don’t belong in the work place.

Back to David, I really want to buy this ad on itunes like yesterday. What a journey.

btw, did we even get a glimpse of David’s limo driver in this commercial? Just sayin….. (I kid, I kid, lol)

  • Lisa

I have a small nitpick on the ad. Everything is in reverse except the guy outside his room door who says * love you man*. I get that they wanted that to be heard, but in keeping with the rest of the ad, it too should have been said in reverse. They could have let the love you man be heard when they raced forward.

  • FolkFan

If he puts out a great cd, I will buy it. For it is really is all about the music for me. If Taylor is hard to work with, he is not the first, & he wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be the last.

I tend to agree with this. I think that, to the extent that someone is easy or hard to work with, that can have something to do with opening or closing doors. But that doesn’t necessarily correlate with the music that a person will put out.

Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s face it, you have to be extremely self confident & have somewhat of an ego to even be on AI. You also have to be driven by something deep inside of you.

That’s an interesting point. At times, I’ve seen DC criticized for saying that he has high aspirations, e.g., that he wants his record to be seen as important, etc. But I’m betting that a lot of the real musicians who put themselves out there for AI, risking public humiliation, etc., are doing it because they have something to say that they think deserves to be heard.

  • hypertwink

    Yupà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’the Cleo Awards.

Sorry to be the spelling nazi but it’s Clio. I’m an adman so it bothered me. A little. Hee.

And yes, to the ad on Itunes!

  • Jolene

Do they put commercials on iTunes? Is that even a possibility? Someone on DCs LJ group sometimes posts these ultra HQ videos (I only downloaded a couple ’cause I don’t have unlimited space on my HD). I really hope she caught this ad, I really want to watch a quality copy of it. It’s just such a nice bookend to David’s Idol journey… Now he’s off to a new chapter, and I almost feel like this is a parting gift from Idol before the new season starts and the focus shifts again.

  • dante

Wow – this is a GREAT commercial! Makes me excited for the new season.

  • cookcricket

And yes, to the ad on Itunes!

For a second there I thought you said it was on itunes! lol, jokes on me. Yes, I’m another that would buy it. *sighs*

2 thoughts here: 1) Do graphic designers ever help on commercials?

    2) (I)dol—–(eye)ball, hmmmm. Oh well.

That was a great commercial. It gets you excited about the new season. I am so ready for the new season. I am an idol addict so the whole well Archie fans may be upset about the rehashing of his lost is so last season. LOL And I am an Archie fan haha. I think it is actually great publicity for both Davids. I think Cookie is going to be epic and be one of the most successful idol winner ever. AI does need this for credibility. As for Tay Tay, I was a fan but didn’t buy his cd afterwards because I didn’t like it very much. Tay Tay is still a terrific live performer but his music is never going to cross over to mainstream. Oh the djs hear didn’t like Tay Tay too much and a few fans said he is very hesitant about signing autographs. I have heard a few other things but oh well, Tay Tay is so yesterday as well. It’s all about Cookie and Archie now and they are going to be the most successful top 2 ever. Oh I like guyliner. :)

  • smartcookie

Then again, I thought Archie would beat Cook mano-a-mano too

We all have our nitpicks. Mine is that “mano a mano” means hand to hand, not man to man. I definitely don’t think Archie could ever take Cook in hand-to-hand combat, although it might depend on choice of weapons, as Archie said in an interview.

Thanks for all the cool info about the song being backwards and the guy saying “Love you, man” and other details I didn’t catch, even in myriad watchings.

  • JudyOhio

I was a big Taylor fan and followed his career after the show until it just got too discouraging to do so. And I never thought there would be another idol that I’d really care about. That is, until DA and DC came along. It’s surprising how much I’m following these two now. During the show, Jason caught most of my attention, but since then, Archuleta has become my favorite and Cook is a strong second in my eyes. Interesting how this idol stuff goes. And now I’m spending WAY too much time watching their careers! lol…but of course interest continues. It’s always more fun to watch success I suppose.

Taylor should maybe have written his book later, like after more ups and downs in an idol winner’s aftermath rather than at the high point right after his win. He seems complicated and conflicted to me and never fails to bring analysis around these parts (MJ’s). He seems to have difficulty in maintaining female relationships, appears almost manic depressive to me, appears to be obsessed with being seen as an artist, tends to go on and on about his career plans, and then things are delayed. I’m beginning to think his problems are actually clinical. Time will tell. In the end though, they (AI) could have been kinder.

  • ShariG

How fun to come back after Thanksgiving to new videos of David Cook. Thank you for posting. I think this commercial is very smart on the part of the AI machine. There are so many David Cook fans who belive exactly as MJ said that we have found our idol and interest in the show is not high for many of us. Featuring David Cook from the first moment we met him through the winning moment and right on to his fantastic debut album that I have now listened to about a thousand times is actually making me a little bit excited for season 8. It may be having that impact on other Cook fans, too. As for the exit song, I like the idea of Life on the Moon, at lease some of it. The one thing great about David Cook is that he has never once bit the hand that fed him. He has had nothing but positive things to say about the AI experience and the company. Understandable since they are managing his career at this point, but he is also very smart. He knows they can help him or hurt him and he is opting for the help.

  • elisad

Even super-invested fans of Cook will probably not be very interested in Season 8. It seems to work out that way.

Yep, no matter how awesome the promo is, I’m not going to watch the next season. I just can’t forgive what they did on top 2 night.

He deserves more respect than that. If they did not like him, that is their problem. The public loved Taylor. The public voted for Taylor to win. The whole AI dissing Taylor left a bad taste in alot of folkà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s mouthà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s.

Yeah, I’m not a fan but he did win after all…

Do they put commercials on iTunes? Is that even a possibility?

Actually yes, for shows that are sold on iTunes, they usually give trailers for free. But AI doesn’t sell whole EPs on iTune so, no chance. It’s just so well produced I wanna pay for it LOL.

I don’t think any of David’s songs would work as a goodbye song. Lie, though, is tailor-made for the new show “Lie To Me”. But I wouldn’t bet any money on that heehee.

  • Jocelin

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m beginning to think his problems are actually clinical. Time will tell. In the end though, they (AI) could have been kinder.

They could always be kinder in hindsight. I’m still curious to see if they will tone down the cruelty after the Abdul stalker/fan tragedy. I never considered Taylor’s problems more than a mild case of asperger’s, which is something I suspect is even present in a more recent finalist. However, I don’t think the mildest clinical problem prevents a contestant from being a good recording artist. In the end, I think it’s more about finding an all-around marketable artist.

Visually, the promo is excellent marketing of the artist and the show. The editing is awesome.

  • FolkFan

    MJ:

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idol found, game over.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

As I wasn’t really looking for a musical artist to adopt from AI and found one accidentally, I think that I’ll approach AI as I normally do, just with some added curiousity about the new judge and about what changes we might see because of DC, Jason, and Brooke—three singer-songwriters of disparate genres who managed to make the top 5. I think that will be interesting. And, yeah, the commercial does sort of bring back that feeling of “Hey, will they manage to find someone and make their dreams come true again?”

That said, that phrase makes me think of the Golden Calf story from the Bible. Heh.

  • JudyOhio

It’s definitely a good commercial, and it should certainly bring in viewers. Of course, I’ll be watching idol because by now I’m becoming an idol addict. And by the way, MJ’s blog doesn’t help my addiction. Geez, I’m attracted to this site like a moth to a flame, LOL.

Jocelin….Regarding Taylor, I hear what you’re saying and agree. I was just mulling over how he handles himself in general and how disjointed it seems at times (to me that is).

  • DCookie_monster

goosebumps preceded by huge gulps of air, big drops of tears and this incredible sense of pride for David Cook.. seeing this commercial brought me back and reaffirmed why he is the most deserving, talented idol ever.

  • SashaB

Thanks MJ. I only managed to see the gratuitous ‘bikini’ commercial on Fox, so I was delighted that you were able to provide us with “The David Cook promo” (tm random local Fox anchor). Gosh, (tm Archie) the camera just loves him and his gigantic eyeball tatoo. Great promo for him and for Fox/Idol.

And many thanks (again) to DC for offering us a rock record that has made for some truly enjoyable listening this past week – substantive, eclectic and with a lot of layers indeed.

  • cookcricket

But AI doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sell whole EPs on iTune so, no chance.

Okay, I have to ask what are EP’s? I’ve seen this before and wondered then. I just know that when I find out I’ll go :doh_tb:, but wanted to end the wondering without doing too much work. Sorry.

  • leome

    I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think any of Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s songs would work as a goodbye song.

I think Life On The Moon with the right editing would work pretty well. But that would probably mean the song would be a single, and honestly I don’t like the song all that much, and I don’t think it’s one of those that gets much love…

I found an Idol that I really like and want to follow on season 7, but I enjoy the show even If I’m not rooting for anyone, so I won’t stop watching it. Those judges do actually entertain me…

  • elisad

Okay, I have to ask what are EPà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s?

    Aw, sorry, EP=episode

  • cookcricket

Thanks elisad! And I didn’t go doh, because I wouldn’t have guessed that.

  • FolkFan

The reason that I don’t see Life on the Moon being the goodbye song is that it kind of focuses on the negative aspects of the superstardom that Idol promises. The goodbye song normally seems to focus either on “hey, you’re going home” (Home, Celebrate Me Home) or “sucks to be you” (Bad Day). Doesn’t really seem to fit either vein, you know?

  • smartcookie

I keep thinking that “Heroes” or “Daily Anthem” could be a good goodbye song. Or maybe they will use Jordin’s “Taking Steps” (sorry, can’t remember the name of it) and then something from DC the next year.

  • cookcricket

leome, I just went to DCO and read the lyrics to LOTM while listening and I think it would work too. (I had thought this before, but wanted to double check) I think ShariG mentioned this too. I love this song!

I also think LO and Heroes and CBTM would as well. I think LOTM would have some quirkyness (word?/sp?) to it, but hey look at this awesome commercial they’ve done. There has never been something like this before, so why not something new for a ‘going home’ song.

Here in this crowd I feel so all alone, turn me back to home…

The life that I knew if through and,
I’m going to need you more than ever, I’m alone in this crowded room…

It’s the cost of getting out here alive…

Life on the moon obviously=AI bubble…

  • hoodathunk

I actually think both Taylor and David have real potential to attain some type of credibility outside of the Idol bubble. The fact that Idol has excommunicated Taylor may very well work to his advantage Actually, Taylor has already gained some cred in the jam band world, sitting in with Widespread Panic and the Allman Brothers among others. A few days ago there was a picture released of him with the musicians that are recording on his new record (as some expert SPers identified them), are top notch musicians who have toured and recorded with superstars such as Eric Clapton and Elton John. I’m not thinking his sales will be through the roof, but he’ll make gains as far as artistry that the anti-idol contingent may come to appreciate.

David has definitely got a harder edge than Daughtry, so I think he will have a tougher road on mainstream pop radio, but he has the edge of songwriting and great rock voice that may win over the real rock audience in time. I’m sure if they didn’t know he was fron Idol, they would love him. It’s hypocrisy to a degree.

  • hollygo9

I really think that LO could be the ‘boot’ song this season. It has the bombastic chorus for the ‘welcome to hollywood’ moments and it also has the slow piano part for when it’s a sorrowful goodbye like Elliott Yamin’s.
    It’s all purpose.

  • FolkFan

How about Declaration for Hollywood week?

  • Michelle

I think Heroes could work for a boot song.

People really would be so sore over the winning moment last season that they’d refuse to watch again just based on that? It is what it is…

    Jocelyn said:

“I never considered Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s problems more than a mild case of aspergerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, which is something I suspect is even present in a more recent finalist.”

I have a 17 year old son who is aspbergers (extremely high functioning now- so much that most people have no idea). I assume you know that Aspbergers is a form of autism that is diagnosed from very early severe communication problems. My son is brilliant but socially a bit awkward. He is also the most deep thinking person and most hardworking, determined person I have ever met. Interesting thought. . . . . . .

Could a person with Aspbergers, even a mild case, do all that is required from these idols during tour, etc.? Not sure. . . . They are all different with a different spectrum of issues. Many people get to adulthood and have never been officially diagnosed and function very well as adults.

I never watched AI before this season, so I am not familiar with Taylor. I haven’t met David A, but from what people say and from what I have seen from watching him on the internet, he is way too warm and connects way too well in person, especially in one-on-one situations to be considered Aspbergers. Although how he interviews varies on the situation, he has done many fine interviews, but seems to have some challenges when under pressure in some. That is probably a different issue.

  • E

That’s a cool comercial. I’m pretty sure that will boost Cook’s album and LO :d time will tell if he will be a superstar like Carrie but good to see TPTB is backing the winner this time.

David Archuleta has Aspbergers? I haven’t heard of that one. If yes then more props to him, must be a challenge to go through the competition and then the tour and recording process having Aspbergers and just one vocal chord functioning.

As for season 8, I’m not going to follow it closely, and I’m certainly not going to be invested heavily. Heck this year is more than enough lol but I think I’m stuck to this blog lol so will be following MJ’s recaps and reading the comments. I want to see who the public will hate and go gaga over haha, which contestants EW will embrace and which they dis, and if LA times will write one of those “thee end of the dark age” articles so on.. but this time I am the outsider and having all the fun lol at those stuck in the bubble. So yes bring on season 8!

  • s3rious

    Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a cool comercial. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m pretty sure that will boost Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album and LO :d

It certainly will. :happy_tb: That commercial is made of win. :thumbup_tb:

  • tinydcfan

I’m always the last to post, but just wanted to add my love of the ad to the rest of y’all’s! It is all kinds of awesome! And thanks again, MJ!

  • Grammie Kari

I am usually the last to post.LOL. I also find the commercial to be cool.

As for season 8, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not going to follow it closely, and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m certainly not going to be invested heavily. Heck this year is more than enough

I was thinking the same thing. I just can’t imagine getting hooked on any other contestant as I did Jason Castro. All that voting for all those hours probably won’t happen, but I will definitely watch the show.

  • oceana

Smartcookie, I also think Heroes or Daily Anthem could work for the show.

I am really loving Heroes right now, and just began to fall in love with Daily Anthem. I hear something new every time I listen to the cd. Okay enough gushing. :innocent1_tb:

  • LK08

E- I don’t think David has Aspbergers. I was replying to Jocelyn’s e-mail from the earlier page. I was saying that I doubt he does.

  • IGetCranked

David Archuleta has Aspbergers? I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t heard of that one.

E, No David doesn’t have aspbergers. Someone was just speculating about it. I’m so glad I’m not in the public eye like this because I wouldn’t be able to handle speculations like that and the rumors that start because of it…so hurtful.

It’s weird to see these AI commercials start up because so much is still happening around this season’s contestants.

  • luckeee55

Until someone on this board shows us their medical degrees and Archie allows them to release his medical records (because they must have examined him in person) it is reckless at the least to discuss his or anyone else’s medical status.

I saw Cook’s commercial this weekend and it is really good. The ending is visually stunning. I actually like the commercial more than the LO video. A nice show of support to Cook from AI. Well done.

  • Jolene

E- I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think David has Aspbergers. I was replying to Jocelynà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s e-mail from the earlier page. I was saying that I doubt he does.

But Jocelyn never named the person she thought had Aspbergers. I don’t know why anyone would jump to the conclusion she meant Archie? I certainly didn’t until it became a topic of discussion when people started defending him.

  • tinawina

Archie does not have Aspergers. I remember a really nasty turn at his TWoP thread where people were saying something along those lines. And not in a nice “wow, look at what he’s accomplished” kinda way but in a “that kids a freak, he must be retarted” kinda way. (disclaimer: not a fan of the r word, just using it to get across the tone in that thread). One of the low points in idol fandom, for sure. That’s why people were assuming she meant him.

  • Jocelin

I regret mentioning that now but it was in context of something clinically wrong with Taylor. Members of my family have this and I tend to see it in others as a familiar social indiosyncracy that happens to run in my family, especially reacting by flinching at another person’s touch, etc.- and I don’t think it is anything to be ashamed of or that it is a social taboo. Far from it. If you read my post carefully, I didn’t feel that any medical condition hampered Taylor in any way and I don’t think it should. I mentioned that I think it’s a common enough condition that may be seen in more recent contestants but it’s not an impedence to their success. I never mentioned Archie. Enough said.

  • luckeee55

Jocelin thanks for the retraction of sorts. You said recent finalist so that means only Cook, Archie, Jordin or Blake. They are the only finalists after Taylor’s season. But I do appreciate that you have explained yourself more thoroughly.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Aspbergers syndrome and the Idols? Not the topic of this thead. :) . Let’s get back to discussing the commercial…

    Did I get that wrong?

ETA: No you didn’t. There’s a ton of miscommunication in the last couple of posts. Best to stick to the topic, at this point.

  • Jolene

You said recent finalist so that means only Cook, Archie, Jordin or Blake. They are the only finalists after Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s season.

Huh? I thought finalists meant everyone who made it to the AI finals – meaning the whole top 12.
Unlike the Semi-finalists, which would include the top 24.
    Did I get that wrong?

  • Jocelin

I was thinking in terms of top 12 finalists, and I do not retract my opinion on the topic. I still feel that even a mild clinical condition has no bearing on a contestant’s success.

    Sorry. I’m moving on.

  • LK08

Does anyone know when or on what stations this commercial will be aired? Is it only on Fox?

  • s3rious

    Pretty cool.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the first time Fox has used a former Idol to promote a new season.

The commercial should also serve to promote the album and single too. Smart!

    I agree, incredibly smart. :thumbup_tb:

  • FolkFan

I believe that it is only on Fox. Not sure how long it is supposed to run.

  • smartcookie

One nice side benefit of this commercial is that its tiny peek at David Cook’s journey has inspired me to hie myself over to youtube and rewind the whole freakin’ journey, one performance and results show at a time… So it took me all afternoon and it’s been pretty fun and impressive and made me sad, too, because it’s all over and we can’t be in the moment with all those lovely moments ever again. But good heavens, what a season this was!

smartcookie, I did the exact same thing last night! I went to the full episodes on Daily Motion, though. Didn’t know YT had result shows and I wanted to see each peformance in it’s context. Didn’t have time for more than half the season, but it was very moving and great fun. It truly was an awesome season and a wild ride. Too bad that when it was happening I was too stressed about possible eliminations to enjoy it all as much as I can now in retrospect. Guess that’s part of the deal.

  • cookcricket

Hee hee, I was tempted to do the same. I’ve never watched the results too much on YT, but do enjoy the performances for sure. I only got to watch three, but wanted to watch more…instead had other plans. Oh well, maybe I’ll watch a few more tonight.

  • cookcricket

Oh, I know! How about “Lie” as a good-bye song? Ha ha! j/k! (lame, sorry).

  • reinharv

I loved the commercial. I think A.I. was very smart to focus on David Cook’s journey and a “rock star” theme putting them in sync with a hotter image.

In general, I think there is nothing hotter than a rock star. Though I have a diverse interest in music, rock is just fun and if I buy tickets to a concert–it would be a rock concert and the other stuff, that’s what I an iPod for.

TV ratings and viewership (A.I.) was not what it used to be and has declined year after year. David Cook gave that show a shot in the arm. I only watched A.I. this season at first because there wasn’t anything on but repeats due to the writers’ strike. David Cook hooked me, he stood out and that was the only reason I continued to watch A.I. at all. If he had been eliminated, I would have not stuck with it as I felt that though there were many good contestants, they were pretty much the same old stuff.

I see this as sending a message to those viewers who stopped watching A.I. awhile back enticing them to watch again.

  • smartcookie

Too funny we’re all doing the same thing! The whole results episodes are not on YT, but there are clips of David finding out he’s safe (or the whole Archie sit-down thing in the case of Top 7) over there. I was too nervous at the time, too, so this was a cool way to look back and see his Results Show Wardrobe if nothing else. One bad thing is that David seems so worn down and less sparkly by the end, although you can see the makeover in action week by week and relive the beauty of “Always Be My Baby” week, which knocked me off my pins completely. THAT was a “moment” for the AI history books. But by rock week and Neil Diamond week, the poor thing seems exhausted and a little frazzled and much too serious. I think losing Michael Johns may’ve been really hard on his psyche! That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. I also think maybe he was wondering what the heck he was still doing there with Michael Johns and Carly and Brooke already departed (he seems to have liked them a lot) and maybe that ground him down a little, too. Now he’s got Neal and Andy and the boiz to hang with, plus probably Mom and Dad and his brothers and Kimberly Caldwell at least some of the time, plus the new-album euphoria, so maybe he’s not feeling quite so used up and worn out. Fingers crossed!

But that is one thing I’m kind of surprised they included in the video — the darker mood of the “one moment amid the madness to lie down” part of it. It makes the rock star lifestyle look a little frazzled around the edges.

  • CathyMK

I see this as sending a message to those viewers who stopped watching A.I. awhile back enticing them to watch again.

Actually, that’s a good point. I know a couple of families who were fans of Bo and then Daughtry who were so disgusted after Daughtry went home relatively early that they quit watching AI altogether after that. Letting those people know that the rocker won this year and has had continued success might help bring some of those viewers back.

  • oceana

    Oh, I know! How about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Lieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as a good-bye song? Ha ha! j/k! (lame, sorry).

    Not lame, funny. :lol_tb:

That’s probably just more “rock cred.”

It’s my favorite part of the ad – him lying on the bed, thinking. :innocent2_tb:

Interesting thread, re: Taylor analysis 2 years after his win. As a big fan of AI and Taylor, I tend to agree with the theory he made waves on Season 5 and lost the producer’s respect. However, he definately had a genre on the show as well as after (old-school soul), but it happens to be a niche market and passe to many. Hope to see him do well in his niche, and continue to feel the joy he so obviously gleans from performing.

AI commercial is great – I’m back in after a blah S6 and hooked on the Davids of S7! Looking forward to S8.
