I guess this won’t be a popular opinion… but I’m loving the group performances this year.
I really enjoyed this Hot & Cold. I like the cheese!! I think compared to last year, it’s much more fun.

If they’re going to pre-record it, I hope they get better at lipsynching because it’s a little hinky for a supposed singing competition to condone non-live singing. And to think that many were up in arms about the ear monitors being used last year. I’d rather have that than this.

What is up with the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“hiddenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  audition thing?

Placating the advertisers who spend a million dollars for 30 seconds of ad time. This is AI’s way of trying to get you not to channel surf during the commercials. They do this on Bravo shows all the time – put a little snippet in between the commercials. The more data they compile, the more they realize that viewers actually do not watch that many commercials in the DVR/Tivo age. This will become increasingly common on other channels/shows as well.

Scott is singing next. The last one is going to be hard to predict. They will have Jorge, Ju’not and Nate last, maybe, who knows. Felicia still has a shot.

At least they are saving the suspense for the end this time. The last 2 weeks have been so obvious that a lot of people probably tuned out.

I just gotta say – Kara is….. ridiculous. It’s ridiculous how often she uses that word. And LOL at lip synching in a “singing” competition.

Scott shouldn’t have got through. I mean, he seems like a nice guy but he was not the best guy last night. Nor was he worthy of being the “next highest vote” after the top guy and top girl, if he wasn’t the top guy. There were better performances. *Sigh*…

She didn’t steal anybody’s spot. The reality is, annoying or not, she has a good voice. This show has put through likeable horrible singers so why not an overly dramatic, annoying good singer?

Jorge is singing the show out. I forgot he hadn’t already done his encore. And it cuts him off before he gets to the chorus. XD

the quest for drama and the pimping on this show has gotten out of control. it’s really starting to sour me to the whole shebang.

I’m not entirely sure what is wrong with this season…

The focus on good singers seems to have gone by the wayside in chance of better entertainment.

The group sings are awful and I’m almost 100% convinced that they are now lip syncing the whole thing.

There is no harmony, there is no togetherness.

I don’t know these people.

They just put Tatiana BACK in the wildcard instead of someone deserving.

I’m just so freaking irritated when I see someone as talented as Felicia, hell a couple of other people up there miss out over Tatiana.

I’ve always been aware with blatant manipulations but right now this just feels like a pill that is just too big to swallow and I’m not happy anymore. I’ve had my qualms with this season already but I’m just tired of it now.

If the judges were really announcing “their” picks, man, Randy has just as bad of taste in music as I had always suspected.

I’m happy about Jesse, sad about Felicia. It’s not really surprising about Megan, or Jasmine because they like their “commercial” contestants.

It’s prolly not gonna happen since there are only three girls in the finals all told– but I would love to see Anoop, Ricky and Von. If Von gets better, they will be forced to take him– for the Clay Aiken “grow during the show” slot.

I don’t think Felicia is even in the same league, I totally agree. For me, Tatiana provided the best vocal out of the, admittedly weak, first group. I think the female vocalist have been better every single night, so I’m definitely in the minority around most Idol related sites.

Tatiana (Group 1)was very good, Jesse (Group 2) was amazing and Kristen McNamara (Group 3) took last night. Kristen was the only one that didn’t get wild card and she was my least favorite so, I can deal.

I think Tatiana is really good, too. I have no problem with the girl. Felicia kinda rubs me the wrong way somehow…though I can’t really put my finger on it. And to be honest, I didn’t think she was all that great last night. She was one of the better ones of the night, but she was far from “OMG!”

I’m agreeing with those who think it will be more girls for the picks. I think the guys are screwed. Anoop stands a good chance to clinch it, and two girls. They aren’t going to make it 4-8. Do we know if they are singing a new song or rehashing the old one?

I was really liking these wild card choices until they got to Tatiana. This show really sucks.

I may be in the minority but I like Von. Glad to see Ricky Braddy as well. I like Anoop but not as much as Von and Ricky.

I’m pretty upset about Nate and Kristen not getting the wildcard, too. They may have been dramatic, but they were both really talented.

Megan Corkey has no business in that wildcard.

Scott dooesn’t deserve that spot in the top 12. He and Michael Sarver’s advancement drives me nuts, because I would MUCH rather see Nate, Von, Alex, or Anoop in their spots- those folks are acutally interesting and fun to watch. Mike and Scott are just a total waste of space- very annoying.

Tatiana definitely deserves that wildcard spot. I’m not a VFTW person or whatever, but I sincerely thought she was the best girl that night. She deserved the spot over Alexis.

When Kara talks about “package” artists it makes
me sad. She is not the good influence on the show
that I hoped she would be.

I am happy that Anoop, Jesse and Matt G. are Wildcards. I am not happy that Taitiana is one. I think that there are quite a few people that should have been given a wildcard over her including Ju’not, Nathaniel, Felicia, and Mishovanna.

The only one I was truly bummed to see left out was Ju’Not. He actually sang really well last night. Having said that, I know I’m in the minority but I was happy to see Von get a second chance. Funny because I could not stand him early on, but he’s worked hard and improved a lot already. I don’t see him going through, nor do I think he really deserves to, but he was clearly resigned to leaving so I was happy to hear them call his name.

I think we can safely assume the judges have their choices in place, and it’s just a matter of those folks not completely tanking tomorrow night.

Agreed 100%. I get that people hate her for her personality, but Tatiana isn’t Normund. She can actually sing surprisingly well. If it wasn’t for her drama queen antics, I bet she’d be a pretty popular contestant (although we do have a lot of brunettes this year, so maybe she’d get lost in the crowd). Really, the only contestants who I find undeserving of the Wildcard spot are Matt G, Jasmine, and Von. I’d trade any of them in for Felicia.

Putting through Tatiana is not the shining example of producer manipulation here. Putting through Jasmine and Matt G – both of who tied for the WORST performances of quite possibly the entire three weeks – THAT’S producer manipulation at its worst. They’re clearly deciding on contestants based on standards they already set during Hollywood Week instead of on actual live performances.

Sadly Tatiana is talented if not completely wacko! I love the Good Day LA tv interview Adam gave where he alluded to the group not warming to Tatiana and he said “Well there’s the Wildcard. She’s not gone yet” with the most evil grin. Self-fulfilling prophecy perhaps? I blame him for this! :biggrin_wp:

I think it’s possible that we could end up getting 4 girls and 8 guys and I hope that it does happen. I am not really interested in any of the girls this year, except Jesse and I was kind of interested in Mishavonna. I think that the guys are better than the girls this year and I could see the judges putting two more guys through to the final 12.

I think it’s possible that they might not be all that concerned with gender balance this season, especially considering the way that this season has turned out this year so far, and because they have changed the format. So I think that we could see two guys move into the top 12 tomorrow night. I’m definitely hoping for Anoop and Matt G. to make it through and I want Jesse to make it as well.

Kara has no interest whatsoever in unique artists. Her comments are always about what genre box she can slot them into, and how they need to change to fit her stereotype. (“Sing a younger song.” “Dirty yourself up.”) She has about the same number of words in her vocabulary as Randy, her 6 words are just multi-syllabic. I’m getting to the point of putting Kara on mute, she’s so grating.

The only possible chance is for the other ‘talented voice’ who received absolutely no camera time at all like Felicia, Ricky Braddy, makes it into the Top 12. I don’t see that happening because these judges won’t be listening tomorrow….they will be looking at their internet ratings, demographics, listening to the producers, etc …at who will America want to see the most, not hear!

This is suppose to be a singing competition and one person who absolutely deserves it, Felicia, is out and Ricky will most likely be out as well until Paula uses her ‘influence’ to get him in (3 votes, 4 judges, what’s going to be the compromise?).

I have been a huge fan of the show and I think this sealed the deal for this season and maybe forever for me.

I’ll be shocked if Anoop isn’t chosen for Top 12 by the judges, but stranger things have happened before.

The only one that surprised me in a bad way was Jasmine over Felicia. That’s bogus. I think Anoop, Ricky, and Jesse are all amazing. I am glad to see Megan and Matt get second chances. Von actually made me like him last night. Tatiana… ugh. If they were doing it for her voice, maybe. But it’s just for the drama.

Who will make it:
If 3 go through: Anoop, Megan, and Jasmine.
If 4 go through: Anoop, Megan, Jasmine, and another guy.

Who I hope makes it: Anoop, Ricky, Jesse, and Megan.

I’ll never understand why AI feels it has to balance out the genders. Who really cares when we’re trying to find the best singer? It bugs.

I’m really keeping my fingers crossed that they don’t fall prey to the “must balance males and females” thing. Season 3 was 8 girls and 4 guys, so why couldn’t this year be 8 guys and 4 girls? I’m hoping so hard that ANOOP (my fave) Ricky and Jesse get through to the top 12.

I’m really hating this format right now. I think that all of the wild card singers are better than Michael Sarver. And Scott (even though he’s really inspirational, I don’t think he’s THAT good). And I still don’t see Jorge’s appeal.

It isn’t but I suspect they’ll go with a 7 guys/5 girls split simply because they do have at least two talented, top 12 worthly girls and most of the wildcard guys are too similar to guys already in the Top 12. Only Anoop really stands out, in my opinion.

Tatiana is a very good singer. I’m happy for her.

But… this season just seems so out of sorts for me. I’m not looking forward to seeing the kids perform like I normally am. I can take it or leave it at this point, and I can’t put my finger on WHY.

She’s for sure an emotional wreck most of the time, but I still liked Tatiana’s performance the last time she sang enough to think she deserved a wild card pick. However, I don’t see anyway she can get past tomorrow night. Good to see Anoop and Ricky back. I’m glad we will be able to concentrate on just the top 12 by next week, lol. That’s usually when the season gets interesting (if it’s ever going to that is). I found myself more engaged with the wild card pick section of the show than the 45 minutes that went before it. I was actually “into” the wild card thing….which kind of surprised me, lol.

There is no rule for this season that states that there has to be an equal amount of boys and girls or an almost equal amount of boys and girls. The judges will choose the final 3 spots to round out the top 12 tomorrow night, and they can choose who they want regardless of gender.

I definitely think that it’s a possibility that we could an 8 guys/4 girls top 12, and I would be very happy if that happened. And I think that the producers and most people would be okay with that. I see nothing wrong with it, I want as many people in the top 12 as possible that I enjoy and I think are talented regardless of what gender they are.

And IMHO, there is only one girl from this wildcard round that deserves to make the top 12 and that’s Jesse Langseth. I might feel differently if Mishovanna, and Felicia had made the wildcard round but they didn’t. And I don’t care for Taitiana, Jasmine or Meghan and think that all of the guys in the wildcard round are better singers than those three girls are.

I hope it’s Anoop, Megan & Jesse. I feel certain that it will be one guy and 2 girls. I don’t think the judges like Ricky or Matt the goat enough to put either of them through.

The only one I was truly bummed to see left out was Juà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Not. He actually sang really well last night. Having said that, I know Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m in the minority but I was happy to see Von get a second chance.

Yeah, I was bummed about Ju’Not..I really liked his arrangement of Hey There Delilah. I also think Von is one of the more interesting contestants with tons of potential..just give him one intense week with Debbie the vocal coach and I think he’ll surprise a lot of people.

Twice now, I thought of Archuleta when I heard Jorge sing DLTSGDOM. I think that was a smart song choice for him. It’s a good song when they can pull it off. Jorge is such a sweet young man….and yes, I was a sucker for the tears, lol

I still think they are going to pick 4 contestants tomorrow night for a Final 13. I don’t see how it would work any other way. The show is supposed to be live, correct? If the four judges can’t quickly whittle down the contestants down to three, won’t they start losing viewers to “paint drying” and “grass growing”?

But, if each judge gets to pick a favourite, there is no need for a lenghty deliberation. They get 3 minutes to think during an extended commercial break (oooo! the tension. Nobody will turn away) and announce who is their favourite (who they probably picked out 5 months ago anyway).

Well, it’s not really a singing competition. Jorge pulled at the hearts of America. And I’m not complaining. If you are going to watch these people twice a week, it’s better to be emotionally invested in the characters. Only a small percentage of people are going to buy an album from any of them.

Ha. I love the wildcards better too except for Alexis and Adam. I know for me, if I go back and watch a prior season, I go wtf was I thinking? I got sucked into liking a performance that really wasn’t that good.

I’ll probably watch on occasion but I think I’m passing on Idol this season. I know they always manipulate the results but this season is OTT. Basically, anybody that got pimped Hwood week is in. I don’t even know why they bothered with the semi finals.

I wouldn’t mind if the finalists interested me but they don’t. And putting Tatiana in for the drama sealed it. It’s just America’s Got Talent with the freaks and the sob stories. And I hate that show. I honestly could care less who wins since I don’t see a legit recording artist in the mix at all.

I’m thrilled that they gave Jesse a 2nd shot and I hope she makes it because I think she’s fabulous. I think Anoop is in for sure, and I’m happy about that.

But it’s not only about the voice or imho Tatiana would be back tripping in PR. I think she was just passable every time I saw her. Her narcissistic hysteria is such a turn off. I happen to like Jorge and Scott. Absolutely deterst Tatiana. She was chosen over Felicia? Give me a break. Guess she’s going to be this year’s polarizing character.

I also like Scott very much and even though I don’t think he will win, he has a wonderful career ahead of h im and want to see him succeed.

The Wednesday night group songs are going to be a real challenge for Scott. And, yes, I admire the fact that he is blind and pursuing his goals. What’s wrong with that?

He always has a smile on his face, rather than asking for sympathy, he’s out there pursuing his goals. I don’t think it’s sickening at all that he is being pimped for overcoming his handicap. Just as Elliott was a great spokesperson for those with diabetes, Scott can be a water carrier for those who are sight impaired.

I was okay with the people who got through tonight even though I’m not necessarily a fan of any of them. I’ll likely be voting my fingers to the bone for Adam and Allison every week anyway.

What was really exciting about this show was the wildcard reveal. I’m so glad Von, Anoop, Jesse, and yes, Tatiana, are getting another chance. Tatiana can definitely sing and I love watching the other contestants have to deal with her. Von has so much potential, so I would love the chance to see him honing his talent.

There has been rumors that the Top 12 will be in that judges mansion used for the Green Mile episode this year. Jesse is the only girl I care about this season. Aside from her distinctive voice and demeanor, she’s got a confident self-awareness that I also see in Adam. I hope she blows everyone away and love the blues guitar idea.

I think Von will not be a wild card pick if Adam is TCO — too many potential similarities there.

Please, AI crew, surprise me by not advancing Tatiana. This is shaping up to be one of the worst seasons ever, but it can be salvaged by emphasizing talent over drama. So many viewers are complaining about the changes or walking away. It turns out that we really are more interested in the talent than the drama. Lesson learned — let’s return to what works.

This speed dating format prevents the audience from developing more than a superficial attachment to the contestants. We can’t get invested and they can’t grow on us. That’s why back stories and internet videos are factoring so heavily into the voting. The contestants and viewers aren’t getting what we need from this stupid format and it’s more than frustrating — it’s killing American Idol.

No great love for any of these guys but I am not throwing in the towel on Season just yet. I think the only contestant that sang something that really wowed me was Jesse Langseth so I am happy she’s got another chance (but I don’t see her getting in over “Drama Queen” Tatiana or “Total Package” Megan). I suspect that the 3 (or 4 as Kirsten seems to think) wildcards have already been picked by the TPTB, so this last performance is kind of moot. Unless one of their picks just totally crashes and burns, they have their ducks all in a row but will use tomorrow for more faux drama. Anoop is a sure thing and Megan or Tatiana seem likely. I don’t think poor Ricky Braddy has a chance and Matt’s second chance is probably just for show.

As much as I love Jesse and am thrilled she got thru, she is not gunna get picked. The judges already know who they are going to pick and considering she was a last minute switch tells me that she is not one of the judges picks for tomorrow. I could be wrong and the judges are actually going to listen and judge the contestants based on their performance tomorrow but my cold cynical heart tells me that’s not going to happen. Had I been one of the wildcards tonight I would have walked over to the stools and checked them for preprinted name tags.

I hate this format. Normally, I’d be totally invested in a contestant by now. This year, I can even remember the names of all of the top 9 so far.
Last year was awesome. Best season ever. This season is the worst since season 3…so far.

I think that one of these either both of these guys (especially Anoop) could help make this season a lot more interesting along with Adam. I love to see both of them make it, along with Jesse Langseth, who I also like who I think could help make things interesting.

I think that Anoop, Matt G., Jesse, and Adam are all good singers and are entertaining in a good way. IMO, the rest of the contestants in the top 12 and wildcard round either have okay voices but are not very interesting, and/or are mediocre singers.

I wonder who’s spot Jesse took? I’m glad that they picked her but was surprised to see Von, Jasmine, and Tatiana (okay not surprised they picked her for the drama but voice or not, she’s someone I can’t listen to).

I was surprised that they didn’t pick Felicia but it doesn’t bother me. I don’t think she grabbed people that weren’t already a fan. I was surprised a bit that Ju’Not wasn’t there and Von was.

Leaving Anoop to the end killed me, especially when I saw some of the picks. I was happy to hear Simon say that he was the easiest one for them to pick. I hope that bodes well for him being one of the 3 wildcards.

So far I like most of the top 9. My guess for the wildcards are Anoop, Megan, and either Jesse or Ricky depending on how everyone performs. As long as Anoop is in and Tatiana is out I’ll be happy.

For as much as ADAM is getting pimped I can’t see it being used as the goodbye song, mainly because for the 3 times it’s been used it’s pretty much been all about yay!happy journeys! However come May if TPTB still lurve it I can go for DC singing it at the finale.

My guess is it will be Von, Megan and Ricky…Tatiana is a joke…

I would have liked to see Nate come back as well. I love him and I think that he is a good singer, but that he picked the wrong song to sing last night. I would have liked to have seen him bought back for the wildcard round, and gotten a chance to perform again.

I think that he would have had less of a chance of making it to the top 12, than some of the other wildcard picks, but at least he would have gotten a chance to sing one last time, with maybe a better song.

Well I was happy about Jorge and Scott. Really didn’t care for Lil, but it was more the style of music that I am not into than the singer. I was hoping for Felicia and if not Felicia, Kristin. I am really sorry that neither of them made it to the wildcard round. Of the ones in the wildcard, I like Von and I like Ricky. It ought to be a pretty hectic show tomorrow night. Out of the 8 only three will go through. I know there is a big push for Anoop, but my favorite of the 8 is Ricky. I hope he makes a good song choice this time. I can’t believe that they brought back Tatiana. She is kind of the Mikela (Michaela?) of this season. She doesn’t have a bad voice but is ridiculously annoying. I am really ready for the normal format to be back with one performer per week voted off. This is way to hard to follow.

I liked his Georgia, but I think he has some breathing problems. During VLV it’s pretty obvious… we listen to him breathing all the time, it’s so bad. And I don’t believe he has the voice to go far. This show is not just about the voice, but the voice is important and his is just not there.

I would actually like to see Von make it. Till this week I wouldn’t believe I’d be saying this, but I’m interested in what Von can do. He has a fantastic voice, and if really learns how to use it without becoming annoying he could be awesome.

About Felicia, I’m really not surprised that they didn’t pull her back for the Wildcard. Simply because they didn’t put her through the first time. Obviously, they’re not that fond of her. And while I think she did give a somewhat solid performance (except for some rather noticeable missed notes), I wasn’t standing up cheering for her. She was good, though. Just not making me go “OMG! SHE WAS SO ROBBED!” lol

And as I said earlier in this thread, there’s something about her that’s a bit off-putting for me. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it kinda rubs me the wrong way.

Tatiana is a bit annoying at times, but at the same time, I find her oddly endearing at times, too. And the girl can sing. I’d be much more upset at her being called back for the Wildcard if she couldn’t. But she can and so I have no problem whatsoever with her being called back. Jasmine on the other hand…

That’s what I’m wondering. She’s pretty much the only one that was called down as a Wildcard that I don’t really agree with. I haven’t liked her since her audition. I mean, yeah, she can sing alright…but it’s not really anything I haven’t heard before. I don’t think she stands out at all. There were only 20 people in the red room, and 9 of them were the left overs from last night, meaning only 11 were invited back from groups 1 and 2. There were 7 people missing….Kai, Stephen, Casey, Anne Marie, Stevie, Mishavonna…and someone else I can’t think of, as they must have been really boring the first time around.

ETA: The other is Jeanine or whatever her name was from Group 2 with the legs. No wonder I couldn’t remember her.

Man, this season is driving me absolutely crazy. To my ears, they have way too many milquetoast performers already in the Top 9. Those would be Michael Sarver, Kris Allen, Scott MacIntyre and Jorge Nunez. That’s 4 out of 9. Weak. And alot of this was due to major pimping going on, with camera time, judge’s comments, group selection…

As far as the wildcards go, I was about to throw something at my TV when Tatiana was chosen. If anyone needed proof that AI is more about feeding the drama over the music, there she was. Uggh. And to add to the drama, they kept everyone guessing if Anoop was in or not. How many TVs would have been turned off if he did not make it?

Well, the plus side of the wildcard choices for me: Anoop!!, Jesse!!, Ricky and Von

Who I absolutely want to see make it onto the Top 12 or 13 – Anoop and Jesse. I’m hoping that Ricky, Von or Matt bring it and join them. I do not think Megan is a strong enough singer and her on-stage movements are highly annoying to me. But since Kara keeps on using the word ‘commercial’ for both Megan and Jasmine, I have no idea who they’re really going to choose. I’m sure hoping that some kind of gender balance is not a major consideration, but I would not be at all surprised if it is. All I do know is that I often feel that the Top 12 is not anywhere near the best group, and this year is no exception.

Yeah and in her video package, they showed Kara telling her that having a good voice isn’t enough…but you gotta have something distinct and she said she took that to heart but when she comes back, she delivers a copycat performance of No One – basically the same thing that got her cut in the first place. I thought Felicia had the 2nd best performance Tuesday night, couple that with being cut originally and having come back to the show…they could have at least given her the chance to compete for the wild card, what would they have to lose? The way I see it, this was already her second shot. Being in the Wildcard show would have been her third shot.

I agree with you. Who cares if Tatiana is a bit nutty at times? The girl can sing. She was the best girl (or at least the second best) in Group One and she did a better job than some of the girls in Groups Two and Three. So I don’t have a problem with her being called back.

Jasmine is the one that I don’t think belongs in the Wildcard, too.

So Tatianna reminds me of Sarah Palin, lol.

During the vice-presidential debates some people thought she did a good job because the bar was set so low to begin with. She could really only do better than people expected… b/c everyone thought she would be miserable.

However in the end most people eventually realized that her performance was just mediocre.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I can’t remember the last time that AI has had a contestant so aggrivating that generated so much hate. I don’t think she will turn hate into love. I think she will either make viewers tune out, or worse for HER, become indifferent. She is only useful to AI, and her career if people are talking about her.

ITA. Megan’s going to compete with Jesse for the wildcard — I don’t think they’ll let both in, and they love Megan more than Jesse. So sad.

I’m OK with the wildcard picks in general. They mostly chose people who gave great semi-final performances, plus a few who were pre-semis favorites. Exactly what you’d expect. I would expect Anoop, Megan and Jasmine to go through, but if Jesse and Ricky made it instead of Megan and Jasmine I’d be so happy! :clap_tb:

GO ANOOP!!! He was the only one I cared about for the Wild Card. Tatiana is batty but I don’t have a problem with her coming back. She is one of the better female vocalists and can sing Whitney way better than Lil. And was it me, or did Lil sound worse tonight than she did last night? I really don’t see what is so great about her. Melinda Doolittle and Syesha Mercado can sing circles around Lil. I also didn’t like her song choice. Sorry Lil, but no matter what Randy said, you are no Mary J. I am not sure who will make it tomorrow other than Anoop. It could be Tatiana, Megan, Jesse or Jasmine, if she picks the right song.

Yikes! They brought back Tatiana! Producers pick obviously. Jesse and Jasmine were surprises as well. They could have selected better female vocalists like Kristen and Felicia and also replace Tatiana with Juno’t. I feel bad for those guys because they really were better and deserve to make the wildcard round.

After Tuesday’s decent show, I was starting to think that maybe this weird three-tier semifinal thing wasn’t so bad. Now I am back to thinking it’s the doom of Idol. I mean, almost everyone, including me, is upset about at least one person that got shoved out because they landed in a strong group or in a group with more sentimental favorites or something. It’s just so arbitrary and sloppy, the way all this is being decided.

It’s really too bad about Junot and also some of the stronger females from last night that are gone, and it just makes you wonder about the whole season. It’s better to be presented with a final group at the onset of live broadcasts and just start the show on a serious note. Simon may think this is a great format, he said as much last night. Well, then let him watch the show. The audience has been taken out of the process. No wonder why the ratings are tanking.

Somebody please give Junot a recording contract so I can stop being steamed over this.

It’s just a TV show and I’ll feel better tomorrow. But right now I’m ticked off.

I am torn about the WC picks, I think they got the guys completely right (even tough Junot may have deserved a spot) and the girls completely wrong.
I am disapointed because I think gender balance is a good thing, season 3 is my least favorite season and it’s mostly because they had 8 women and 4 men.

Jasmine doesn’t deserve this at all, everytime I saw her sing she was average to bad, it’s funny that they say she’s commercial because I don’t see anyone liking her, I think she will be the fist one eliminated if they put her through.

I can’t believe they only picked one from last night for the WC. I think Kristen was the best last night and would have liked her to get a spot. Also Felicia. Jasmine totally didn’t impress and I don’t think she deserves another chance. How can these people pick and sing a new song by tomorrow night and do a great job? Also, I have watched Kara for weeks trying to figure out who it was she was reminding me of……….it won’t come out and grab you but she has the jaw movements of Julia Roberts. not the teeth of course, but the way she holds her mouth. call me crazy (i hope not) but it bothered me until i puzzled it out!

After they announced the 8 going through, the first thing I said is that Anoop is practically a lock, and I hope Jesse and Ricky get the other two spots. But I imagine Megan will get through despite all the finger crossing and teeth gnashing I will do until tomorrow evening.

And that’s why Simon is happy. Finally, he has the control over the show that he wants. Between stacking each group with a few favorites and a lot of cannon fodder, pimping their favorites and putting down the ones they don’t want, regardless of the actual performances, and using the wildcard spots to fill out the Top 12 with any favorites that didn’t make it through the first cut, the judges and producers have manipulated the situation so that they have exactly the group they want. I know some of this happens every year, but this year seems even worse than last year.

I was wondering why AI announced Lil Rounds safe first last night and had her sing first instead of last (in the pimp spot) as they had with their favorites the past two weeks.

Well, it suddenly dawned on me that they had Lil Rounds sing first so that everyone would be able to hear her complete song. They had a lot to fit into that one hour and probably knew that they may run out of time by the end. Time constraints. Poor Jorge got cut off while he was singing last. Not much of a pimp spot if you can’t finish your song.

Boy, do I want to get excited about something/someone here. I really have a hard time doing that this year. I get more excited reading about all your excitement! You guys sound better, even on the page, than a lot of these singers do in the flesh!

I’m still perplexed about the Lil Rounds thing. I opened my ears wide, and heard a singer straining, pushing, and showing no particularly subtlety or lushness iof tone, or anything very distinctive.

Yes, Tatiana can sing, but I think she’s there for the Drama Queen factor, and I find her insufferable. But apart from Adam Lambert, no one else seems to have a BIG PERSONALITY, and they seem to want that. (consider all the bikini girl crapola). Jorge is easier to take, though I’m not so sure he’s a great singer despite all the hype.

Something just ain’t clicking for me and some other Idol watchers I know, folks. I hope I’m not saying that two weeks from now…

Why would they even bring Jackie Tohn (spelling?) “back” as a potential Wild Card pick? Were these folks– Brent, Jackie, Norman, etc– obvious seat fillers??? Did anyone on AI really PICK AI to be a Wild Card Wild Carder?? Please.

Megan actually reminds me a lot of Diana Vickers who did very well in last year’s X Factor (except I suspect Megan doesn’t have quite as good vocals ~ have to wait and see). I think Diana came in like third, but seems like Simon was pimping her the whole way. Me thinks that bodes well for Megan as a wild card winner.

I would actually like to see Von make it. Till this week I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be saying this, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m interested in what Von can do. He has a fantastic voice, and if really learns how to use it without becoming annoying he could be awesome.

That is how I feel. No one of the boys in the Top 12 have a voice I remember, Von singing it straight have it and maybe Matt. Adam’s voice is not really my cup of tea.

If anyone was unsure that this was a new and improved American Idol (with more drama!), the Wild Card Announcements should have clued you in. They have no care if they hurt Brent or Matt B or Kendall, they just wanted to have them all there to sweat it out for added drama. They could have been kinder to these people and informed all the WCs like Matt G and Ricky a few hours before, hid them before the show and just introduced them at the end. No, they had to raise the hopes of these kids again and trample on their dreams on live television.

Huh, that Diana Vickers’s voice reminds me of Dolores O’Riorden of The Cranberries.

There were only 20 people in the red room, and 9 of them were the left overs from last night, meaning only 11 were invited back from groups 1 and 2. There were 7 people missingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.Kai, Stephen, Casey, Anne Marie, Stevie, Mishavonnaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦and someone else I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think of, as they must have been really boring the first time around.

I don’t know but that seems kinda strange to me. Why couldn’t they just bring everyone back? I agree the aforementioned were BORING but they could have at least been included in the shot to come back.

Don’t feel bad grayhound, Anoop didn’t make it through the first time because I stopped voting two years ago after I felt that TPTB muddled around with the “combined voting” when Phil was “voted” off. I think that every year, except for Taylor’s year when they just couldn’t deny the voting block, TPTB get who they want at the end of the day — whether it’s “co-winners” like the Davids last year or Simon’s favorite like Fantasia or Ruben — so why bother voting.

Really, it’s helped my blood pressure go down a notch or two…

What a difference a day makes. Idol went from something I thought would be very interesting, to a show that has become very predictable. Shall we say more predictable than ever. Where are the characters?

Just thought I’d point out that this year is already filled with people who are on the less professionally experienced side. Jorge, Alexis, Sarver, Lil, Kris Allen, !!Gokey!!, etc. Other than Adam Lambert and maybe Scott M., we will see a very unexperienced group. I have a feeling, it’s not going to be as fun to watch initially, but more fun in the latter stages when they all sort of catch on.

Personally, I prefer a bigger mix of experienced and not, but TPTB did not ask me for my opinion…

Was it just the wife and me, or did the group sing look/sound strange, lilke it was partially lip-synched? That was odd. Never heard that song before, but hearing ‘PMS’ in the lyrics was certainly interesting – that kinda got my attention.

I did NOT want to see more of Von, Matt, and Jasmine.
I would have greatly prefered Felicia, Kristen,and someone else – Mishavonna, Kendall. What’s with no love for the girls? These guys aren’t all that. I’m thinking this is a sub-par season 6 all over again.

I agree with you. Who cares if Tatiana is a bit nutty at times? The girl can sing. She was the best girl (or at least the second best) in Group One and she did a better job than some of the girls in Groups Two and Three. So I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a problem with her being called back.

Well, I don’t like Britney Spears at all. And, it’s not just that’s Tatiana is nutty. It’s that she’s grotesquely narcissistic and annoying. It’s all a matter of opinion, but I don’t think Tatiana’s performance was that much better than anyone else’s really, except of course those girls who stunk up the place so bad they weren’t even invited to show up last night.

I enjoy the AI tv show, so annoying people really do kind of damper my fun. I don’t care so much about what I imagine their post AI careers to be, since the bulk of them turn out quick, crappy cd’s. If I want to punch someone in the face every time I see them, it really starts to not matter to me whether they can sing or not.

I believe that Jasmine is there because Simon thinks she’s marketable. I don’t know much about that stuff, so I’m not exactly sure why he thinks that. Regardless, I think his opinion holds a lot of weight. So, I think Jasmine probably has just as good of a chance of getting to the final twelve as anyone.

I think Paula’s opinion is the least valued of the group. And, I think she’s a weak person who’s easily bullied. That’s why I believe that Ricky is toast regardless of how well he does tonight.

Completely agreed. Simon and the producers had a top 12 they wanted from the get-go, and this joke of a format is all about ensuring that as many of them got there as possible. They promoted who they wanted during the early rounds and Hollywood, then they made damn sure nobody unwanted got a second chance to sing so that they couldn’t impress America too much. BTW, I don’t mind Tatiana getting another shot. She did well in Group One. Putting Jasmine and Matt G ahead of them is an insult to them and the shrinking number of fans of this shark-jumping show.

This format is NOT right. I won’t say that 3 weeks of semis cutting 2 out of 12 each time were the greatest either, but going to cutting 9 out of 12 is not good either. They need some sort of compromise. Maybe have 3 groups of 12 and cut 6 each. Go down to 18 and then have 2 groups of 9. Maybe cut 4 from each giving you a top 10. Bring back a Wildcard and let 2 go through – ONE judges pick and ONE voted on by the public. Let would be much more fair and we eould be still invested in the contestants.
Right now I don’t care too much about anyone. I haven’t bonded with anyone with this format. And that’s why viewers are tuning out.

I’m thinking that they brought back a certain number partly for the drama last night and partly because if it got out who was in town it wouldn’t matter because there were more than the 8 they would pick. I was surprised that they stuck with 8 because I thought each judge would get 2 picks and the producers would pick Tatiana. I have a feeling she’s there instead of some favorites because they were never going to pick them anyway and she’ll bring drama.

I actually prefer Lil to Melinda even though I thought she was a sweetie. I’m not sure Lil will ever be a favorite of mine because that’s not my style of singing at all but there’s something about her personality and voice that I like.

I wonder what the format is tonight? I assume they’ll all sing before the choices are made known. I’m not so sure song order is that important because I’m sure the judges and/or producers already have a good idea who they want unless the performances change their minds. I’d love to see Anoop do “My Perogative” because we got such a short clip of it and it sounded really good.

I’ve been wondering how they would do the group song choreography if Scott stuck around. I guess every week everyone will just dance around him while he stays seated. I do think the group sings are lip synched or something – they don’t seem right this year.

I was surprised so many of them came from the 1st week’s round. Kara obviously gives big points to attractive people whom she deems as “marketable or package”. Although she did give favorable comments to Jesse Langseth who I think has loads more talent than most of them and a real musical background – she could go far if given the chance. Jasmine is just another Paris. Ricky did a good job but had so little screen time I’m not sure he’ll make it. Megan is pretty but she makes my ears bleed. Tatiana is annoying, but I did think she was the 2nd best girl of that week, and she did a really good job in Hollywood w/ a Whitney song.

I did like Matt Giraud at first – local guy – liked his Georgia. But what he did in round 1 was unforgivable & his slot shoudl have gone to someone else. I’m very pleased Jesse is in there but I’ll be stunned if TPTB pick her. Anoop is OK but lacks personality for me.

Out of last night’s 3 – Lil was no surprise. Jorge got thru on emotions but I am curious if he can hang around long enough for the stylists to work on him. Scott – I had to fast forward through the rest of his song because it was so bad to listen to. I really hope he doesn’t make the tour – he’s just not that good.

So, tonight we’ll have our Top 12 & for the first time ever, I know so little about them and have seen them perform so little that I cannot discern who will win or at least be in the top 2-3. And I’ve picked them right every year, so I’m bummed.

Widz that is sooooo funny! See, everyone is freaked out that knows her! Thanks, if they had to bring someone crazy back, I would have liked it be Normund over any of the rest of the freak shows. A lot of people had been concerned that the contestants chosen for the wild card wouldn’t have time to prepare a 2nd song. As it turns out, Von was the only contestant selected from week 3′s group, and I really do think he’s Wild Card fodder. I think a lot of this was pre-planned.

Oh, and if they put Tatiana in the top 12, I’m SO done with this show. I don’t think they will though. They know better….right?

He turns on the tears and blubbers that this is his dream and ‘please vote for me’, well isn’t that the same as Tatidrama’s script?? Honestly Jorge, isn’t it EVERYONE’S dream who’s there?? Why is your dream so much more important than the rest?
I think the tears got him a seat, seriously why don’t they all just cry, that would even the playing field.

I really hope Anoop makes it tonight and i’m not even opposed to Von if he keeps it toned down, he’s not that bad. The rest I don’t give a rats patootie about and I have no clue who to pick as a winner……..Lil, Adam, Scott? The one the judges favor or the one with the most tears!

Last night, I only cared about Jesse getting another chance. That made me happy. This morning, I don’t see that she has a snowball’s chance in hell of getting a wildcard. This makes me sad.

Paula really is amazing at spotting talent. For all her incoherence, she’s sees things in people that have proven out, twice as much as Simon and Randy combined. Simon only sees it if it hits him over the head (or if it’s wearing a bikini). Randy, I can’t say because I don’t speak Dawg.

Anyhow, here’s hoping Jesse finds that killer song and nails it. I know she’s very capable, but here’s hoping the stars align for her tonight.

Jorge is NOTHING like Tatiana, he was sincere and couldnt help it, she is just a loon and put the crazy back on because she figured out that was why she was getting thru, not on her ability to sing, that is laughable. Tatiana is not dum that is for sure, she realized and took note when they all encouraged her to bring the crazy back. The judges were sick in all of that, telling her that any publicity is good publicity, where is the Tatiana we saw in Hollywood, we dont like your voice dearie but your crazy act, we dont like the subdued Tatiana,so, she got wise and got crackin on that!

widz, that pic is hysterical! And that’s actually why I sort of love having Tatiana around. I don’t enjoy it for her particular brand of crazy, but for the unscripted and totally genuine reactions of the other contestants around her. Those have been Idol gold so far. Plus the girl can really sing. She sounds a bit like Gloria Estefan to me, and I thought her version of Saving All My Love had some really unique phrasing which I enjoyed in a song I otherwise pretty much hate.

I’ve been listening to songs at iTunes and have to say that I think Anoop sounds really similar to Jorge, so I’m not thinking he’s necessarily making the cut for Top 12. Von sounds fantastic and energetic and really, really good in his recording, so I have a hard time believing his voice is not going to nab him the male spot if he does well tonight.

Megan has reminded me of Diana Vickers since her first audition, and I do think she has a very unique voice and style, so I think she’s in unless she totally botches it tonight. Her quirky dancing reminded me of the way Diana moved her hands when she sang, so they’ve got those quirky moves in common as well. Diana had a couple of trainwreck performances, but for the most part, I thought she delivered some very unique renditions very, very well.

I keep going back to that pic, Von with his funny little smirk, Ricky about to clap but then, uh no and Megan, the funniest and soooo real. I just would hate hate hate to see a good singer go and someone like Tatianna that cannot sing, stay, that would be so unfair just to provoke these singers and keep them from doing well to get ratings and funny pics of them, if you want to see that kind of stuff go watch Real World or Brett Michaels, I want to see how well these guys sing and progress, as usual, this has never been one of those kinds of shows, that I Hate. Just NOT right.

The group sings have been so strange. I can forgive the lip-synching…you could get a major pile-up on stage if a couple people of the 12 miss cues or forget lyrics. So the prerecorded business is fine. However, the vocals have sounded so similar to each other…like a slightly grown-up version of Kidz Bop.

OK, AI, just give me Anoop and no one gets hurt! :-P

I’m thinking Ricky might have a shot. His singing abilities/backstory ratio was all out of whack, and I think AI may have done that so they could put him through and he could be the “dark horse no one saw coming.”

So my picks would be Anoop, Ricky, and Jesse. I fear AI will pick Von and Megan instead. I’m hopeful about Anoop, though.

Paula is very intuitive when it comes to picking talent, Randy is good too (Jennifer Hudson) but not as good as Paula. Simon has a difficult time recognizing great talent in the early rounds (Cook, Daughtry) in the competition and he is a bit off base. I wondered the exact same thing last night when she was passed over. Her DH comes across as overbearing and condescending. Not somebody the producers would want to deal with. And they already have so many of the Redeemed on the show, they could afford to put a few more Heathens in.

I also don’t think Tatiana took Felicia’s “spot.” Tatiana, for all her mishegas, is a better singer than Jasmine, who’s only there because she’s gorgeous and poised for a young gal. She won’t last long but may attract a few devoted tweens and that will help with ratings. I was very sad that Mishavoanna never even got called back, but if all the crazy stagemom stories are true, I can see why they didn’t bother.

I don’t find any similarities between Anoop and Jorge really, aside from the fact that they both seem like really nice guys. Anoop is smooth dark chocolate, and Jorge is hot fudge w/ whipped cream, nuts and jimmies.

So glad Jesse got another chance. If she really bats one out of the park tonight, she could force TPTB to skip one of their “package” contestants (Megan, Jasmine). Idol needs a chick with a guitar and some serious cool.

I do think Ju’not’s health issues may have sealed his fate. They really don’t need someone collapsing during the show. They had a close enough call with DC last year. And asthma is scary shit. People die all the time from asthma attacks.

Not to be knollish, but I’m wondering if TPTB instructed last week’s finalists to “suggest” they have issues with Tatiana. It makes for so much drama that they all have to deal with her. I only wish my dear, sweet Nate was one of them.

First of all, I was really angry to see some great people passed over by some that I didn’t like (or in Tatiana’s case, really, really didn’t like). Here is my thinking for tonight:

Anoop Desai – It was quite a surprise to see him eliminated, so it is natural that he gets a reprieve (unlike the Group 3 people who got ROBBED). They know he has a strong fan base and probably believe that his group was a fluke and that he is the real deal. I can’t see them not going with reality. My prediction: He makes it.

Jasmine Murray – She appears to be fodder in the wildcard round, having a spot that probably should belong to Felicia, or Mishavonna, or even Kristen. She was solid in Hollywood week though despite a poor performance. She doesn’t have the pimp value of Tatiana though, so I don’t see a lot of hope for her. My prediction: She is eliminated.

Jesse Langseth – She is either loved or hated by fans, and I thought she did not do great in her performance last week. Do the judges sense something in her though? We shall see. She definitely does need to turn it up, since she has not been pimped much at all. She could be a Leah LaBelle-like surprise though. My prediction: She is eliminated.

Megan Corkrey – It was not a surprise to see her return, despite the fact she struggled in her group performance. She had been solid all the way through up to that point, and the judges still really like her combined with the fact that she is potentially marketable which is music to the ears for the promoters. My prediction: She makes it.

Ricky Braddy – A good performance was the catalyst for his second chance after being virtually written off coming into the semi-finals. However, the fact that the finals are already filled with guys diminishes his chances considerably. He might make it if there is enough room, but he was never really a chosen one, which will really hurt him. My prediction: He is eliminated.

Tatiana Del Toro – She is the most hated contestant this season (ever?) by real fans and has robbed several better singers (Felicia most notably and recently), but they don’t seem to matter this year. The producers love her since she is claimed to drive up ratings (I doubt that). The judges also seem to have a crush on her. I fear what lies ahead, but I don’t think it will be pretty. My prediction: She makes it. (uggghhh!)

Von Smith – Another shocking pick considering he was among the worst in his group plus he finished low in the votes, and he had never really shown signs of strength at all at any point in the competition (why him and not Ju’Not???). Obviously the producers see something in him, but are they really willing to give him a spot when he would be out early anyway? My prediction: He is eliminated.

Okay just watching the results now… some delayed reactions – I hope Von does another restrained performance later, he does have a good voice in there. Not a fan of Jasmine’s voice but she is endearing, I hope she proves later that she does deserve this WC spot. Ricky looks gooooood tonight. Wow, Simon has such a hard on for Megan. LOLOLOLOLOL Tatiana never fails to amuse me. UGH Matt… can’t stand him for some reason, he annoys me so much! YAYAYAYAY for Jesse… I do dig this girl… she dresses well too, like her outfit tonight. Anoop… predictable but of course I like the choice! You know all the other contestants know they didn’t have a chance making it when there was only one slot left and Anoop was still in the red room. Anyway… sad for Kristen not getting a WC shot :( Sooooo robbed.

Totally agree. I think Paula (and Randy to a lesser extent) experiences the music, whereas Simon (and Kara to a lesser extent) sees the “product” potential. Those are the contrasting perspectives both of which are probably needed to make a viable recording artist.

To be sure, Simon is very good at identifying new product for consumption by the masses, not to say that it’s bad because he makes stars of people. He’s the business guy.

Paula is more interested in what moves her, and for all the criticism of her judging style, she seems more honest about her reactions than Simon, to me. On the other hand, Simon honestly adored Melinda which was obvious to me, but I think he realized she wasn’t “commercial” in the way that Jordin was, and he seemed disingeuous when he praised Jordin and soft-sold Melinda.

And speaking of judges, I know there’s not a lot of love for Kara but since she’s been added to the panel, I think all of the judges have given more meaningful criticism and commentary.

ETA: Itsalleternal, I agree with some of your predictions although my reasons are somewhat different.

I think as much as they would like both Von and Anoop, they will pick 2 girls to go through because otherwise it’s 8 male/4 female.

Jesse – my last favorite – was a last minute change, which I think means she has no chance (I’d LOVE to be proved wrong) no matter how well she does, because I’m convinced they already had their top 12 give or take a couple, picked out before the last group even performed this week. They want “commercial” Jasmine and if she manages not to succumb to nerves again, I think she’s through. If Jasmine falls apart again proving that she is too young for this, and Jesse knocks it out of the park, maybe Jesse has a shot to take Jasmine’s place.

Tatiana… She can sing but I don’t think there’s anything very distinctive or special about her voice. I think she’s there to shore up ratings for this episode. I HOPE she’s not going to be advanced to the top 12 because unlike Nick, Nate and Alex who were entertaining and seem to be genuinely nice people, she’s a narcisstic, histrionic nightmare. If she’s genuinely the best female singer tonight, I’ll grudgingly shut up about it even if I have to grit my teeth whenever she’s on my TV screen until she’s finally gone.

The boys? Anoop pwns Von. But then, Ju’Not pwned Von too and I’m still surprised he didn’t make the cut.

Matt G. and Ricky are the unlucky “other” white, male soul/pop singers, there’s already another piano player too.

Major Ricky Braddy fan here – he blew me away with his rendition of “A Song for you”. Though some found it to be a yawn fest ( were we listening to the same song ???! ) – I think it may be hard to beat that song choice !

Considering Simon does not give Ricky the time of day and if America was voting there is a good chance one of the chosen ones would be beat out by Ricky, sadly , I cannot see him being chosen tonight . Hopefully, I am wrong and talent will prevail.

I think Megan is a definite because SImon has the hots for her big time . She is a gorgeous girl , but her singing just does not do it for me – sorry. Also , I am disappointed that Michael Sarver and Scott got a Top 12 spot with so much more talent in this group that was passed over .

I think eiher Matt or Anoop will get a spot but not both – too much competition for Gokey if they were both there : )
I prefer Matt if he sings soemthing like Georgia on my Mind or the motown group song he did in Hollywood.

It sucks that we have no input on the Wildcard choices and once again, I cannot say too often that I despise this new format with people only being given one shot and you’re out .

Ju’not was another who got robbed – the guy was smooooooth !

In the case of Simon, there is also a huge conflict of interest in that he is way too much of a producer (which is dragging down ratings as well) and not enough of a talent-seeker. The big problem is him getting the tiebreaker vote (or even a veto?).

Anoop had to be fairly confident going into last night’s show that he would get a WC nod. I mean, c’mon, of all the remaining contestants, he has the largest fanbase by far and was on everyone’s short list. But, maybe leaving him until the end shook him up a bit because he seemed downright stunned when the camera panned to his face at the end of the show. He wasn’t even celebrating, just … stunned.

I’m fine with Matt G. getting a spot because I’m actually curious to hear him sing again. He redeemed himself somewhat in that Closer group number when he harmonized with Adam (their voices blended nicely) and he also had a sweet solo riff at one point.

Megan, what do they see in her? Yes, she’s lovely, but her vocal range seems quite limited. I love Jesse and hope she kills it tonight.

Overall the only finalists I’m impressed with are Adam, Danny, Alexis, Alison and Lil. Michael and Scott have weak vocals and Jorge and Kris just don’t seem commercial to me. I don’t know, maybe they see Jorge as the next Marc Anthony.

I doubt two guys will make it, as we have six guys already in the top 12. I can see two guys only if they decide to have a top 13. I can see Matt G being the second guy if he doesn’t stink up the place like he did with Coldplay.

I don’t think Tatiana will make it. They’ve given her a shot to extend the drama one more time, but I can’t see them advancing her. I hope I’m not wrong about that.

Since Kara joined the panel, I’ve come to appreciate Paula more. For all her glazed-eyeness, there is a genuineness and a true love of music in Paula that I don’t sense with either Kara or Simon. Paula appears to be the lobby behind Ricky and Jesse. If that is true, I love her even more. They have gotten the short end of the stick attention-wise. I don’t expect them to go thru, but I appreciate it that I get to see another performance out of them.

At least I hope I see another performance. With 8 singers and 1 hour, I’m a little worried that they will do something other then have them sing one more full song. I could see them being asked to sing for 30 secs — like in Hollywood week, and the rest of the show is backstory packages and yet more judging banter. I hope I am wrong about this, but they have made so many bad decisions this year, I don’t have a lot of faith.

But then again, moral support from me seems to be the kiss of death for contestants this year. lol. My horses have all been put out of their misery at this point. I’m watching now out of morbid curiosity.

Paula went up a notch in my book this week, particularly when she started zeroing on the contestants by recalling all of their earlier (audition & Hollywood) performances. It gave the impression that she’s a little more invested in the contestants than the other three.

I was also pretty happy with last night’s show and the wildcard picks. It was one of the most enjoyable shows so far this season for me.

OTOH, tonight may be an entirely different experience. As you, I really hope that Ricky (the best singer on the show, IM0) makes it through. I also like Jesse with her quirky style and phrasing. Actually, I like her better than the *sure thing* LiL.

We have had so many LiL’s. I really am not into that singing style and her confidence annoys me. I hate to say it, but when I look at her, I can’t help thinking that Fantasia and LaToya had a child and she’s on American Idol once again.

I had the theory that if they brought back Ricky, it was because they finally forgave him for singing better than the other chosen one Danny and were willing to take their chances that the hidden Ricky might beat the overpimped Danny.

But now with the show already stacked with so many guys, *maybe* there will be only one more guy and I have to wonder if Ricky can beat out one of the early favs in Anoop and if Ricky may have too similar an appearance to Matt G.?

Someone else mentioned that Lil reminds them of Paris. That perplexes me as well. Their voices & styles are extremely different. Plus the fact that Lil is quite attractive while Paris is rather unfortunate looking.

Maybe it’s just me, but Lil doesn’t really remind me of anyone I’ve seen on this show before. Plus, she gets points for having a strong voice, yet not singing a Whitney, Mariah or Celine song. If she busts one of those out – I’m going to be pissed.

Right now the cards are stacked against Ricky because Simon thinks he lacks charisma. So those other two guys have to sing like munchkins in order for Ricky to go through. And the same thing goes for the girls, because Simon adores Megan because she is adorable. But if Megan sounds bad again, I don’t think she will get through. Kara’s backwards. She’ll teach a pretty package to sing, and with the right song, hope that the package will be a star….more like a one-hit wonder. Actually, it should be “Oh, you’ve got a great voice, now let’s fix up the package.” Rarely is the package actually complete.

Yeah, and I think she’s trying to figure out what she’s supposed to be saying rather than just stating her opinion. Nothing that she says sounds sincere. It’s more like, “what should I be saying in order to sound like I know what I’m talking about?” or “what’s MY spin?”

Maybe she’ll gain a little confidence and figure out what she wants to say … at which point I’ll consider taking my fingers out of my ears when she opens her mouth.

ETA: You’re right that no one is judging the guys based on their looks, and it’s OTT with the girls this year. Maybe the guys aren’t handsome enough. Maybe the girls aren’t talented enough. I don’t know, but it’s driving me crazy. Poor, poor Kristen McNamara.

I started the season off liking Kara (I looked forward to her verbal sparring with Simon), but ever since that ridiculous comment to Danny Hokey, “you give us all hope!!!” (wtf), I’ve soured on her. She is too much about the package. So what if they’re able to find that one perfect song for Megan? What about the rest of the album? I agree, Paula is the one sounding coherent these days.

Exactly. Also, not all black female R & B-type-singers who have crossed the Idol stage can be lumped together. Fantasia is different from Jennifer is different from LaToya is different from Trenyce is different from Vonzell is different from Melinda. None of them sound alike to me, but not all of them have the privilege of being recognized on the radio. I can identify Fantasia, Melinda, and Jennifer just by listening. But, don’t ask me to distinguish LaToya from Vonzell. Not sure I could do it.

So, for right now, Lil – although she possesses a lot of vocal power – possesses the voice of a very generic church singer who picked a great song. I don’t hear a star when she sings. What I hear is something she has gotten used to doing probably for the majority of her life – singing loud and sounding good. I am very interested to see if she can dial it back in coming weeks. I think she needs to try and sound more distinct. Once Idol is over, I don’t know if she would stand out from all of the others like her.

Probably, she’s just being realistic. She knows how hard it is out there for a female without the right look to make it in the music business. Whereas a guy as butt-ugly as Jay Z can become an international superstar. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen right here on this very blog comments like “oh, Kelly looks like she’s getting chunky”, “give Pickler or Carrie a cheeseburger, she’s way too skinny”. These poor girls can’t win in society where a girl as lovely as Jessica Simpson being photographed in bad jeans becomes nationwide news.

I’m often flabbergasted by this very show, when over a season’s time a seriously funny looking guy starts being called hot on a regular basis. It’s an odd phenomenon that appears to only work in one direction. Perhaps it’s an anthropological thing where women can convince themselves that ugly guys are cute if they’re fond of them – but with men, they either find you attractive or they don’t? I have no idea. But, I think people who’ve worked in the music business a long time are well aware of it – and they know who’ll be an easy sell and who’ll be a tough one.

Although it seems clear that the judges have their chosen ones, I sense that things are more volatile than usual this year. That’s why I’m hoping that the Jesse “stock” is on the rise, as if they realize she could be the “quirky girl” just as easily as Megan, given the increasingly evident limitations of the latter.

And I second all the Paula/Kara comparisons. Has Ms. “Package” appeared to be moved by anyone’s performance this entire season? I thought I approved of her addition to the panel because it seemed to make the other judges better, but now I’m not so sure.

I agree. The ones who don’t start out as “complete packages” are usually the most fun to watch. They have most room to grow. You can get a pretty haircut over the course of the competition (see: David Cook, Clay Aiken, Elliott Yamin), you can’t suddenly get a better singing voice in a few weeks (see: Ace Young and many other “packages”). I’d take the unpolished talent over pre-packaged prettiness any day.

However, I’m not surprised by Kara’s take on the competition, as she did say once that Katharine McPhee was one of the greatest talents to ever come out on Idol. Uguh.

Kirsten made an interesting post the other day about how great the contestants look after their makeovers. And I agree with most of her post that the idols will grow in the looks department after the makeovers.

For some reason two of the judges are not seeing this.

Tatiana, NO,NO,NO .I actually like Von, I think he can grow.I hope Ricky gets thru too, they can pretty him up. Thank God for DC and ADAM, the saving grace.

I’m sure it feels just terrific for those girls who can really sing and don’t fit the standards of an “ideal package” (which are so arbitrary anyway). Particularly since not a one of these girls is unattractive. Maybe they are not all classically beautiful, but it’s not like we’ve got Medusa sitting on the couches either.

Seriously, I was so appalled at the way they treated Kristen the other night. In my world she would be considered a very pretty girl.

Kara….does not know what she is talking about. I cringe every time she opens her mouth because she tries to sound like a big pro. This must drive Simon nuts.

They need to dump Kara ASAP.

I can identify Fantasia, Melinda, and Jennifer just by listening. But, donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t ask me to distinguish LaToya from Vonzell. Not sure I could do it.

I agree with whoever said upthread that Kara has offered some good constructive criticisms so far. Instead of giving a “yo dawg that was the wrong song for me for you” or a “you look beautiful tonight and I hope you had fun” or a “that was like being at a bad disco in Timbuktu”, she has actually given some of the contestants something to WORK with like suggesting a song that would sound better with their voices. IMO, that’s what these judges are supposed to be doing.

Interesting, I didn’t know that. I thought Kara was a nice addition for about the first 2 hrs of the season, now I can’t stand her and I am also now looking at Paula in a different light.
Maybe that’s why we have Kara, to improve Paula’s image LOL
I want to know if Simon or Randy have an eject button for Kara’s seat that they hit everytime it’s her turn to talk, because more often than not she flies out of her chair towards the mike with her arms out like some mechanical robot and says ‘you can sing!’, it cracks me up.

Personally I loved Paris and find Lil a total snoozefest. Everybody keeps saying how “current” and “contemporary” she is, but to me she looks and sounds like any one of dozens of great singers I’ve seen and heard in church settings. She’s exceptional by those standards, but I would never buy her music. Paris–the one who auditoned not the one who gradually bored me to tears throughout the season–initially came across like a potential superstar. She just went for it too early, IMHO. A couple of years would have made all the difference in the world for Princess Pea.

For the record, I loved Fantasia, Jennifer, Nadia and Melinda. Liked Paris, Syesha, Lekisha and Mandisa. Bored by Vonzell and Lil. Can’t even recall who Latoya was, LOL. Sometimes it’s just the “it” factor, not the music they choose, the color of their skin, or how they wear their hair. Personally, I don’t see it in Lil, but maybe she’ll surprise me. She definitely is talented.

I think it could work for a female contestant, if they have the goods talent-wise. That’s what I hate about this format. The ones like Clay, DC and Elliott, what made their journeys so special is because they started out NOT looking like the typical Idol but they evolved, they were a diamond in the rough. I think we lost a lot of talented singers who could have ended up like them but because they didn’t look commercial enough, or chose the wrong song, or just wasn’t the whole ‘package’ on first glance. Because really, did anyone look at DC at his audition or say, “Happy Together” and thought YES! There’s the winner! The voice was there but in the outside, boy was a hot mess.

I happened to really like DC’s Happy Together. When he bent his knees, it made me weak in mine. It should have been a warning sign, but I ignored it.

Let’s hope they don’t let Jesse Langseth go tonight. She’s the diamond in the rough for me this year.

Sadly, this seems to be a common formula lately, which creates recording artists who are popular in the moment but gone tomorrow.

Listen to Radio Disney (if you must – I’ve got a kid in that demographic. Sigh.) and the rotation includes Disney TV stars who cut records. Some of them like Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers are actually pretty good singers, but many are bland, amateurish and have no business recording music, imo. But it doesn’t apparently take an exceptional voice to sell singles if you have a built in fanbase from Hannah Montana or High School Musical and the magicians in the studio can make magic with ProTools.

I’m appreciating Paula more and more this year. She’s been lucid more often than not.

So far am slowly falling in like with Adam, Anoop, Lil and Jesse…love the tone of jesse’s voice. Am waiting to see what Megan will bring because I think she can bring something really interesting to the table.

As for the others…not very interesting to me…so far. I’m willing to have my mind changed.

I’m on the fence regarding Kara. Sometimes she makes useful comments, but not consistently. I think she’s still trying to get her footing.

This suggests Tatiana will not get a wildcard spot.

Still, a reliable Idol insider who works on the show has this ultracomforting scoop to share this morning: “I really don’t think there’s any way Tatiana will make it through tonight. I know the judges and producers wanted her to come back for one more round of drama, but that’s it.”

I like Danny, Allison, and Alexis. I love Anoop. He must make Top 12. I need a reason to watch this show without it feeling like an obligation.

Yes, Jesse’s human fallibility I find quite disturbing. Not as disturbing as the slippery slope you’ve started down but disturbing nonetheless.

No worries, I’m off-pitch regardless. Fingers in the ears provide the double expedient of blocking my own voice in addition to hers.

Well, personally, I find it incredibly unfair to judge someone based on a DUI charge. We all make mistakes. I don’t really think it’s fair to decide not to vote for someone in a singing competition because they made a mistake a couple of years ago. To compare her to Britney Spears because of that single incident… well, that’s a bit of a stretch, imo.

Yeah, I agree. I personally think that Fantasia is one of a kind- she has flaws, but she’s one of a kind. She’s in a different league from the rest of the “divas.” And Nadia wasn’t even anything like the rest of them, so people who put her in that block don’t know what they’re talking about. J-Hud and Melinda were fantastic. And Paris was so cute and Vonzell seemed sweet. Syesha, LaToya, and Lekisha left me cold, so yeah… everyone is different. Maybe even Kelly and Kat can be put in the “diva” category, because they belted R&B songs didn’t they? But oh, wait! They’re white, so they don’t count right? :rolleyes_tb:

But Lil is the WEAKEST one of them all, as far as vocals are concerned. I think she can sing better than Trenyce, and maybe Paris, but that’s about it. That’s my problem with Lil. She’s like LaToya with a weaker voice- but they’re treating her like she’s the 2nd coming of Tasia, which she’s NOT. I would’ve taken Felicia or Kristen over her to be honest. Oh well.

I too prefer the funny brand of crazy over the clinical kind when it comes to my tv entertainment. I guess it’s a matter of taste though, and the producers obviously have a different perception of what is fun tv than we do.

I like Jesse. And I continue to be amazed at the arrogance and judgmentalism of Americans. She does have a DUI and that is terrible. But, honestly, when I was younger I drove a few times after having a few drinks. I shudder to think about it now. For all I know, she had her wake-up call. If there were the internet, digital cameras and cell phones, I KNOW I’d have an inappropriate pic or two out there too. You know, some people just get exposed. But for all I know, they are all good people.

So many stone throwers with Idol. Maybe that’s why so many have turned away from all the holier than thou format.

If we get 13 or 14 tonight, I’m just done watching. I’ll dvr and just watch what I want. The ratings for another 2 hour show with 14 people getting a minute or two to sing and no time for the judges is going to take another plummet in the ratings.

I’m pulling for Matt G, though I had no love for Chris Richardson back in Season 6. If Matt starts claiming the breathiness and out-of-tune runs are forms of singing, I’m getting the heck off the Matt train.

I will respond to both at once. Never did my comment say I would not vote for her. I am sure I won’t for her, but it is because I don’t love her singing.

My point was that Driving drunk is horribly irresponsible and has devastated families I know with lifelong repercussions for them and very few for the offender. That is neither arrogant or judgmental. It is a fact. Brittney Spears has been a disaster for a while, although kudos to her, she seems to be turning her life around at the moment. I am sorry to have offended you.

In the talk about Divas, I always felt Nadia was in a class of her own. She was so unpredictable. We had no idea what she would wear or the song she would choose. Some of her numbers were closer to Rock (or Rock /n Roll) than the declared Rock chicks.

I really am not sure where Lil will go with her singing. I will admit her back story moves me more than some.
