The stats: 107 contestants compete in the group rounds. 75 survive.
Oh the drama!

In other words, American Idol group rounds begin…

The group rounds are back, after being ditched for Season 7.   Really, the only reason the round exists is to get the kids to mix it up a bit.   There are usually a few groups who don’t get along, and the AI cameras are there to capture it all.

The groups begin forming in the evening.   The kids break off into sets of 3-4 to rehearse a performance.   Usually, they’re up all night, trying to get their parts down.   There’s a method to the producers madness here.   The environment is designed to be stressful and non-productive on purpose.   The better to capture the kids arguing, and the more chance for major trainwreck performances the next day. That’s good TV.

Once the kids split up, there are a few stray contestants, still looking for a spot.   Tatiana Del Toro is one of those contestants, and it becomes clear pretty quickly why nobody wants her.   She’s a self-absorbed drama queen.   And she’s also slightly crazy.   After finding a group, she decides to ditch them. She finds another group (the ill-fated Team Compromise, but I’ll get back to that in a bit) only to ditch THEM, without telling them.   Yes, she is crazy. Then there’s Team Divas–Lauren Barnes, Katrina Darrell, Rose Flack, Jasmine Murray. Rose feels like a square peg in a round hole, and Katrina “Bikini Girl” Darrell refuses to take the assignment seriously. Young Jasmine, somehow manages to stay calm amidst all the drama.

Team Compromise consists of blond princess Kristen McNamara, the no-nonsense Nancy Wilson, and drama queen, Nate Marshall.   That’s a combustible combination right there. Nancy gets pissed when Kristen insists on taking a long break to rest her voice. Nate gets in the middle, making the situation worse. He screams at Nancy, “I’m not going to argue with you, because that’s what you want me to do!”   Ha, speak for yourself, Nate.

The next morning, Team Diva tries to wrestle Katrina out out of bed.   She’d ditched her group the night before, without practicing, to get some sleep.   Now, she’s under the covers, moaning that she needs more sleep.   The rest of the team head to the Kodak, believing she quit the competition.

Meanwhile, Kristen calls Nate’s penchant for drama, “distracting” and Nancy, still pissed that Kristen won’t rehearse as a group, decides to practice on her own.

Then, wouldn’t you know, Katrina eventually shows.   “You’ve got to teach me what I’ve missed,” she says.   Daggers!   “We’re going to be one of those groups,” says Rose, “That gets up there and is an absolute train wreck.”

We’re nearly 30 minutes into the show, and we’ve barely heard any singing.

As if the kids aren’t nervous enough when they gather in the morning, Simon makes it worse, “Forget the words, you’re out.”

The first group, India Morrison, Matt Giraud, Kris Allen and Justin Williams are “White Chocolate” and they’ve got their stuff together.   India raps “I Want You Back” over beats supplied by the others.   But Matt, Kris and Justin also sing capable solos.   Good stuff.   They all make it through to the next round.

Next, a couple of trainwrecks take the stage to butcher “Get Ready.” Maryn Azoff, Austin Sisneros, J.B Ahfua, Shelby Swartwood, Julissa Veloz are eliminated afterward.   Jorge Nunez and Nick Mitchell live to see another day.

“Action Squad” are having a hard time holding it together.   When they finally perform, “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” it’s a little rocky.   Emily Wynne-Hughes totally forgets the words, and she’s gone. She walks away with tears streaming down her face. Also eliminated is Ryan Pinkston. And, for a reason not revealed on camera, he’s pissed at Paula. “I saw an evil in her eyes,” he says ominously. Well, alrighty then. The rest of the group, Alex Wagner-Trugman and Anne Marie Boskovich advance to the next round.

Team “Rainbow Coaltion” decide to go a’cappella and it’s worth the risk. Danny Gokey, Jamar Rogers, Taylor Vaifanua are featured here, and their performance of “Somebody to Love” is damn near sublime.   The entire group advances to the next round.

Next, kudos to the editors for skillfully blending together three groups performing “Somebody to Love.”   Standouts are Jeremy Michael Sarver, Adam Lambert, Matt Breitzke, and Jesse Langseth, who all make it to the next round.   Adam hit some freaking crazy high notes, right there.   And Jesse’s folk/blues vibe shows promise.

Team Diva is next.   Will they overcome their differences? Eh, No. Rose forgets the words to “Mercy”.   Jasmine totally nails it. The others are rough.   Katrina bitches about how she was in high heels all day. Simon actually calls her out on her excuses.   Jasmine Murray advances to the next round. Lauren Barnes, Katrina Darrell and Rose Flack are sent home.

Katrina aka Bikini Girl, isn’t one to waste a minute of her fleeting fame.   She mugs and poses for the camera all the way out the door.   She refuses to hug or make nice with the girls afterward, and brushes them off her shoulder, as if they were beneath her.   “Damn,” says Kara, “What a bitch.”   Rose crumbled up on stage.  Ãƒâ€š   The girl has potential but she wasn’t ready yet.   Jasmine, the youngest of the bunch, kept her poise throughout, managing to come out of the entire experience smelling like a rose.

As Rose leaves the theater she says, “I hated my group so much.”

More bad news: David Osmond and Deanna Brown are eliminated after their group performances.

Tatiana Del Toro and her team take the stage to sing “I Want You Back” and they’re a mess.   Despite being off key and forgetting the words, they all manage to advance to the next round. Tatiana, hilariously and annoyingly thanks Jesus, and all the little people.   Her team mates look like they want to punch her in the face.

Ending the day, are the disaster that is “Team Compromise.”   They sing “Mercy” and sound like three soloists who are forced to share the same stage. Their background vocals for each other are hilariously off-key, and I have to agree with Simon–it sounds like they’re trying to sabotage each other.   Nate Marshall has a decent voice and some stage presence. Kristen McNamara has an amazing upper range.   Nancy Wilson is the weak link here, singing tentatively and stumbling on her words.

When Simon says, “I think one of you girls is safe and one isn’t” Nancy knows she’s gone. Kristen tries to comfort her, and Nancy snaps, “It’s too late”. After Nate and Kristen are declared safe, Nancy rejects Nate’s attempt to hug and tells Kristen to “F**k Off” as she walks by her.   Backstage, she is inconsolable.   She can’t believe she let her emotions distract from her performance.   “I spent two years chasing after this,” says Nancy, “And I let somebody get the best of me. Oh my God,   I cannot believe this sh*t.”

Tatiana and I would have had a big fat throwdown right about now. Let me say again – I. Can’t. Stand. Her.

    And, Nancy Wilson is MEAN!!!

  • SpenserJ

Tatiana and I would have had a big fat throwdown right about now. Let me say again – I. Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t. Stand. Her.

Right on sister. I got your back.

She’s almost as annoying as the guy with headband and the weirdly small eyes, with those things in his ears, who I find it incredibly difficult to look at.

  • butter

We’re 19 minutes into this episode, and I’ve yet to hear anyone sing a note. I really, really hate drama for drama’s sake.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s almost as annoying as the guy with headband and the weirdly small eyes, with those things in his ears, who I find it incredibly difficult to look at.

    He drives me crazy!

And, does Rose not own any shoes?

  • butter

Make that 29 minutes. This is really making me mad. JUST SHOW SOMEONE SINGING ALREADY.

  • hicksaholic

Well all I can say about tonite’s show so far is I believe I have found a solution for what to do with the prisoners at Guantamo. Just put them in a room and play tonite’s show over and over. They will break soon enough assuming this is not considered by the world community worse than waterboarding as far as torture goes.

  • kozisedso

Is this the worst Idol episode ever?

  • SpenserJ

And, does Rose not own any shoes?

She’s an adorable girl – but have you seen how dirty her feet are? Eww. She’s wondering LA barefoot!

I must say that I rather enjoyed White Chocolate, and not just because that name is awesome.

  • butter

Is this the worst Idol episode ever?

I still think the San Francisco auditions was the worst ever, but there are another 22 minutes in this ep to change my mind.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

I like Rose too, Spenser, but her feet are the stuff of nightmares!

I think AI is struggling to find a balance between the drama and the singing to satisfy everyone. They did get a bit carried away on the drama tonight though. Do we have more Hollywood episodes next week? I can’t remember.

  • Jolene

Adam, Adam, Adam. Thank you for saving this episode for me.

  • Tony

Have they shown Felicia Barton at ALL yet (during Hollywood week)?

  • Trina

Wow Adam Lambert can SAAANG! Loved Danny and Jamar’s group too.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Not that I’ve noticed,Tony. Really disappointing.

  • Kylene

I don’t understand – the judges seem as annoyed by Tatiana as I am, and yet…she survives another day….I don’t get it.

  • http://huckleberryfriend.wordpress.com/ huckleberryfriend

Hands down, the worst Idol SHOW ever!

  • s0x_prisoner

Wowww Matt Giraud is GOOD!! How come I didn’t know that before? His group was awesome. And, I have just come to the realization that Danny Gokey rocks too. Haha both their groups were amazing.

I actually kind of liked this episode… a bit too much Tatiana and Kristen/Nate/Nancy and not enough Anoop/singing, but I was entertained.

  • hardkandy

So, did they show Michael and Carly?

  • primeminister

Danny, Adam, Matt Giraud, Jesse Lang, and Anoop were standouts for me. Everything else was crap.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

I heart heart heart Adam. HEART. Trying. not. to. get. attached. and. it. is. not. working.

Anyway, I may be the only one in the world who loves Group Night, but I do. I admit it. I love the high drama and catfights and hijinks. Because in the grand scheme – these people may be solo artists, but they’re going to have to work with others throughout their careers. I think it shows a lot about how they’re going to react and deal with time-pressed, stressful situations and gives TPTB a good gauge of how they’ll handle the pressures of live performance shows. But taht’s just me.

  • onetruevoice

so did michael castro make it to the next round?

  • Jolene

So, did they show Michael and Carly?

Nah-ah. Their segment either stayed on the floor of the editing room or will be shown next week.
I wonder where Carly got the info it would be shown tonight and how many people watched specifically to watch either her or Michael… Oh well.

  • lefty

At this point there are a few too many personalities that I just can’t take. Seriously, I have to leave the room when Tatiana opens her mouth, because the instinct to kick my television is so strong.

I was on the fence about Danny but now I am definitely a fan. I was disappointed not to see some of my other early faves.

What a weird season this looks to be.

  • blissful

My knollish self thinks this is a reason they brought this back, to add to the drama. If they did this last season, in Simon’s mind, it would have been a love fest and boring. And it’s a great tool for the judges/producers to singers with more “character”.

  • St.Lucia

Okay. I’ll take Bikini girl over Tatiana anyday…and that’s saying something.

Oh my god. OHMYGOD. Can that girl possibly be more irritating. She makes every previous annoying contestant all rolled into one less annoying than she was on the show tonight.

    Please send her away immediately.

  • JOJOSIE

Adam is my pick right now. I read where his dad was a DJ and Adam was exposed to good music of the 60′s,70′s and 80′s so he may do well as that seems like what the Idols have to pick from most of the time. I also like Danny and Michael S. The gals are going to have to work on me as I don’t have a favorite there yet. A bit too much drama tonight but was glad we finally got to hear some singing, after all it is a singing competition.

  • Jocelin

The first group was amazing! Matt/Dueling piano guy was really good. The other notable groups were pretty good, but a little too much screaming and showboating from some of the members. I wish they could have cut 15 minutes of the drama for 15 minutes of singing, disastrous or promising. Unfortunately, I have seen more entertaining group episodes than this season’s.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

So, I’m rewatching the “Some Kind of Wonderful” section (to rewatch Adam, of course ;) ) and I’m actually really curious and interested to hear more from Jesse Langseth. I like her voice and think she’s definitely got potential.

Oh my god. OHMYGOD. Can that girl possibly be more irritating. She makes every previous annoying contestant all rolled into one less annoying than she was on the show tonight.

    Please send her away immediately.

So. Much. Word. She annoys the hell out of me. I really, really do not like her. Her Grammy/Oscar/Emmy/Tony acceptance speech was the last straw for me.

  • http://www.alandaleproductions.com AlanDale

The entire Hollywood group night was nothing but a BIG mess IMO.

    What a waste of time…!!! :confused_wp:

  • St.Lucia

I’m not even going to mention how many times I rewound my dvr to watch Adam’s performance. Not even going to mention…because that might make me already obsessed….and maybe I am?

I must say the little clip at the end for next week with Anoop singing “My Prerogative” has also made my day.

Anoop and Adam are stealing my heart already.

    Mostly Adam.

But boy did I have to endure 30 minutes of CRAP to hear some singing.

Loved Jesse Langseth too! She might be the girl I root for this year…behind Adam and Anoop.

  • primeminister

I usually LOVE Hollywood week but the editing has been horrible this year. Season 5 was one of my faves…what happened?

  • chicksineggz

So did anyone else totally love the last 4 seconds when they previewed Anoop? =D
Seriously, the whole show I was thinking “But I wanna hear Anoooooooop!! Why aren’t they showing him?!?!”
I think if they took out the drama they could’ve fit every single group performance in the hour. I hate hearing the judges praise when I have no idea what they’re praising.

  • Lys

I loved Matt’s audition, so I’m glad Hollywood week went well for him. :-)

For some reason, I’m just not on the Adam train yet. *shrugs* Something about his tone irks me.

Nothing, nothing, is as irk-ish as Tatiana, though. Oh. My. Word. :help_tb:

  • Duke

    ADAM ADAM ADAM!!!!

Holy cow- unreal. He is going to make this season.

If he keeps singing like that, the only contender i see is Danny- who also blew it out tonight.

Those are the 2 standouts for me- along with the dueling piano guy that sounds like elliot, Matt.

Those are the top 3 for me.

Thank God Adam tried out this season, or else this season would fall real short imo.
    God he’s fucking awesome.
    awesome awesome awesome
    so good,
    AH. *rewinds tivo*
    love this season now.

  • LK09

I wish they could have cut 15 minutes of the drama for 15 minutes of singing, disastrous or promising.

Yes, yes, yes! I would much rather see two hours of the groups performing, so I could make my own judgements about people than see the total manipulations that go on and the drama!

    What a waste of timeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦!!!

    Pretty much!

  • Little Boy Blue

If there really are 36 who made the semi’s it is obvious that the producers are favoring some over the others with airtime. Missing are the group performances of the following people :

Scott McCintyre, Arianna Afsar, Brent Keith, Jorge Nunez, Kai Kalama just to name a few who were not featured.

  • primeminister

I rewatched some of the performances, and Matt Giraud (dueling piano player) was amazing. I got more of an Elliott vibe tonight than I did during his auditions.

Matt and Danny are my favorite 2 now, but since I don’t usually go for the front-runners, Matt has a slight lead.

Adam has an amazing vocal range, but I usually prefer men with deeper voices.

  • maracaibo

Isn’t it even now that Danny is the Chosen one.
Also, Anoop and Adam will make the Top 3. Now I know why Simon said a guy will win again this year. It is so obvious.

I mean those guys are good and all but it just takes all the excitement out of the competition.
This season is definitely not one of the best. It cannot even compare to Season 5 or Season 7. Not a good cast. JMHO.

  • Jolene

OK, some more thoughts – Loved Adam, he was the sole bright spot of the ep for me. I’m glad I have someone to root for this season.
I’m over Danny, did not like what he did at the group sing. I know many Cook fans like him, but I guess I just don’t see the appeal. And he’s already overpimped by the show.

Michael Castro was cut, right? I seem to remember seeing him in the montage of people who didn’t make it through? Maybe I’m wrong.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Adam Lambert is awesome. Von, you wanna wail, that’s how it’s done. However, I don’t know how much I can take from either or them for an extended amount of time. The jury’s still out on Adam for me. Gotta see more. No doubt he can sing, though.

Also, Danny Gokey’s group stood out. Wanna harmonize, do it with the music teacher. Also, I liked the best friend better tonight.

If Nancy Wilson wanted to be as mean as a rabid dog, then she should have had the voice to back it up. She emerged from this looking like the bad guy.

I still want to beat Tatiana up, and she wouldn’t have even dared come back to my group. Ugh.

I needed to see Anoop, but getting a preview of him at the end of tonight’s episode was enough to tide me over.

How about Michael Sarver. Surprisingly great.

The first group, with the rap was pretty good…reminiscent of the Blake/Chris/Rudy group from Season 6. However, the only one I remembered is the Matt Giraud.

  • itsalleternal

The editors definitely need to be fired.

Tatiana and Katrina got about 60% of the air time tonight. It would likely have been much better if they didn’t get that air time. Thankfully Bikini Girl is gone, but we still have to put up with Tatiana :(

  • bean99

I love group songs. They’re either horrible or great with not much inbetween. I don’t know who it was but the first group was really good and loved Danny’s group most of all. I did like Adam much better than his audition but still am on the fence. I didn’t get sending the Diva’s on and especially Tatiana. :blink_tb: I hope we’re going to see Michael and Carly next episode. They didn’t show much of a preview so it’s hard to tell. I really wish we’d see more of some of the ones that had good audions like Scott. I’m kind of surprised they haven’t featured Joanna, the plant, at all.

  • sanrio76

I didn’t know that there were many Cook-fans were in Danny’s corner. This Cook-fan however, is rooting for Anoop. So disappointed in not getting to see his group number. I hope that 4 second preview isn’t a tease. As for Tatianna, well I hit the mute button the second she’s on screen. Unfortunately she’s just as annoying without the sound on too.

  • IdolFanatic

Matt/Dueling piano guy was really good.

Yes, he really impressed me tonight. I was unsure about him at first, but I like what I heard from him tonight.

Danny and Jamar’s group put almost everyone else to shame tonight. Holy crap, they were good! The tight harmonies, the spot on vocals…what a way to kick ass! I always liked that Taylor girl too and she was a great addition to the group. Who was the other chick in their group? I missed her name.

And no sob stories to speak of tonight, so I hope that is a sign that they will just let fans focus on the talent now. We’ll see. I’m guessing Top 36 Week pre-performance packages will rehash them some though. Idol loves that stuff.

I did like Adam’s group and Adam is really good, but he did slightly border on over-the-top for me. But I liked the group enough to give him a pass this time :)

And while there was way too much drama for my liking, the group songs were way better this year. Just wished would’ve seen more homeruns than they showed with those songs.

Liked Kristen’s voice, but the mess of a group she was in really overshadowed her talent.

  • Duke

Norman Gentle made the top 36! OMFDGIH!!!
    armageddon!

  • gabam

Michael Castro’s group made it through to the next round. They showed them near the very end of the show. I wish AI had shown them singing. I guess that the group had no drama, hence, little air time. They showed them briefly three times that I counted.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Gah, Adam better not let me down. I will be devastated if he chokes in the semi’s (which I doubt he will, but still…). To quote another truly lol-tastic past Hollywood contestant, my spirit will be broken. ;)

So yeah, so far, he’s definitely my fave.

    I also like:
    Danny, Kris Allen, Michael Sarver

I want to hear more from:
Anoop, Jesse Langseth, Matt the dueling pianist, Scott, Jasmine, Ann Marie, Jorge, Stephen Fowler, the other Matt.

I would like to actually SEE the following in their Hollywood performances, because I think I like them, but have only a 30 second audition clip to go from so far:
Brent Keith Smith, Megan Corkrey, Stevie Wright.

I want the following to redeem themselves:
    Lil.

I would be perfectly fine if the following never appeared on my tv again, but they will:
    JoPlanta, Von, Tatiana, Jackie Tohn.

So, by my count, of those on the top 36 list, we still haven’t heard anything from Jeanine Vailes, Junot Joyner, Mishavonna Henson, and Ricky Braddy. Is that all?

  • IdolFanatic

I want to see more Stevie Wright! Dang! Why aren’t they showing her?!

  • chicksineggz

I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that there were many Cook-fans were in Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s corner. This Cook-fan however, is rooting for Anoop. So disappointed in not getting to see his group number. I hope that 4 second preview isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a tease.

Same here! I’m a cook fan that’s 100% rooting for Anoop this year! I mean I might root for someone else too but Anoop is definitely my favorite so far.

I dunno, Danny’s good but I’m really not that into his singing. I really didn’t like the song he sang on yesterday’s episode. I just don’t think he’s got that great of a voice. I liked his audition better than what’s he’s done in Hollywood so far.

  • IdolFanatic

Anoop is REALLY good, but Danny’s voice and his personality have really captured my attention…he just oozes charisma to me. I’ll have to see more of Anoop I guess to really make up my mind on him.

  • Duke

Can someone please tell me that they also read that on the updated VFTW Top 36 spoiler thread?

Norman Gentle (Nick Mitchell) made the Top 36? if that is true, totally unforgivable idol. i cannot believe it. no words. i mean, i understood sanjaya, but this is a COMPLETELY new league.

    MJ, um, is that right?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • cookmerized

so much for me not getting invested in another season! didn’t think i had the energy, seeing as i’m still logging in to mj’s on an hourly basis to check for cook news. that said, i’m with you sanrio76. this cook fan is also proudly standing in anoop’s corner for now. but matt, adam and danny’s best friend and danny all got me rewinding the ol’ tivo tonight. bring on the top 36. i am pumped for season 8!!

Found this over at MJ Online about Michael and Carly being on tonight. Sounds like they’ll still be on next week but with a shorter segment :

OK, Michael said in his last message tonight that Idol called and said that they had to cut the boot camp part down to 5 minutes but they would show them during the recap next week.

  • jpfan

Forced “drama” totally overshadowed the singing. It felt like a boring episode of one of those reality shows on VH1. How could a group show have so few actual group performances.

I guess they’re going with the “big” personalities this year – Von Smith, Tatiana, crying guy in the last group, lots of Bway types etc. And if Norman makes it through, that kind of seals it.

Anyway of the serious contenders, I’m putting my money on dueling piano guy, Matt. I’ve liked him from day one and he really sounded good tonight. I think they’re trying to redo the disastrous results of Season 5. They got their rocker winner with Cook and now they’re going with the Elliott type for S8.

  • CathyMK

Wow, what a waste of 3/4 of an episode. Seems like they mean it when they say there’s going to be more personality/drama this year. Too bad they forgot to show us much singing to go along with the obnoxious personalities they focused on tonight. And did we really need a montage of Simon’s insults? Couldn’t we all do that for him in our sleep at this point? I don’t think more than a few of the Top 36 have gotten more than a minute so far of actual on-camera singing time, which is really frustrating given the sudden-death character of the semis this year.

I still like Adam, Danny, and Jasmine. Matt Giraud was really good tonight too. But will we get to see Kai, or Scott, or so many others at all during Hollywood Week?

  • abbysee

    Worst show ever.

I love Anoop, Danny, and Adam.

What a bad show tonight. Damn. I think the ratings are gonna suffer. The drama was contrived and silly. Major fail.

  • justantonio

today’s show was alright…all that drama was just annoying though…i would be ok if nate and tatianna jumped out a window tonight. More singing and less drama ..por favor

lot of talented guys for sure…..Holy Adam Lambert and Gokey Dokey stood out by miles tonight

the little clip of Anoop singing my perogative..awesome..i can’t wait to see it…always wanted to see someone sing some bobby brown. I think this season will have some great songs.

I hope the news of Norman Gentle is true. I just heard Nick Hendrix myspace and he was terrible and im pretty sure i saw him get cut today. I can’t wait to see what Norman Gentle does next week on the piano.

  • hardkandy

I’d be okay with it if Nick/Norman made it to the top 36. If Jackie, Von and Tatiana can make it… he sure as hell can too. a) I like his voice better, b) his antics are actually entertaining unlike the three I mentioned.

  • mclay

Did anyone else notice that “Adam’s group” was actually a montage of performances of THREE different groups???

Adam Lambert sang with two girls and some other guy we never saw separately, Jeremy Sarver was in a group of three guys, and Matt Brietzke and Jesse Langseth shared yet another group.

The editing was so skillful that I hardly noticed!!! Can you imagine how much manipulation AI is able to execute on us with that kind of editing???

Somebody above said that the editors should be fired, I think they should be praised for technical abilities. It’s the producers’ decision as to what to be shown in an episode, the editors just execute and they do so marvelously.

  • bigjr6633

Idol definately jumped the shark this year. Seriously they picked Nick Mitchell, Von, and Tatiana WTF! Then when they make the top 12 its going to be idols fault because they picked him. I swear anytime I hear these 3 I just want one of the other contestants to beat them up or something.

  • Michelle

I guess I’m in the minority, but I *loved* the drama tonight!

I kept looking for Anoop but didn’t catch him…

Looking forward to next ep when I can start getting invested enough to learn some of their names, lol.

  • sunchick

Apparently, I like guys with interesting boots who can really wail. Heh, Adam was pretty rad. I think we have yet to hear Simon speak directly to Adam since his audition. I keep wondering if theatrical will be the new smug.

Danny’s still a frontrunner, yup. Shocking!

I watched Lost first and my DVR cut off the Anoop My Prerogative snippet. This makes me :dry_tb: because I am a closet fan of pre-Whitney Bobby Brown. (Don’t judge.)

Tatiana might be the first person to make me wanna root for the producers to villify her. Hell, I will happily grab a torch and pitchfork and chase her out of the village. Eep. She reminds me of that annoying one-upper character Kristin Wiig plays on SNL…the one who shows up uninvited to random group functions and makes it all about her.

I couldn’t wait for MJ to post the video here, so I rushed over to her photobucket account to watch Adam’s clip over and over — and I noticed it there, although I was so focused on Adam that I missed the edit during the broadcast.

I was struck by 1) the irrational fear that Adam is so good he might ruin AI forever and 2) compassion for the good singers who have to compete against him. How long until Simon calls him the best singer on any of his shows ever?

  • Duke

Adam’s so amazing. He has potential to be the best contestant ever. I pray he will.

  • movin2thabeet

Thankfully, we got to hear Adam do a bit of his thing. So far, he’s one of the few I’ve seen and heard that make this show worth watching. Also liked Danny, the droplet of Anoop, and a couple of others. The rest of the 50 minutes were disposable IMHO. I sure hope we get to hear more of the better singers next week, because if there’s only going to be a handful of real stage-ready exciting talent, this could be a snoozer of an Idol season.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Ok for me it is Adam (LOVE HIM and have since his audition) Matt and Danny.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

The Adam hype is a bit much. :-) As far as I can tell so far (sans checking out his youtube), he’s a theatre dude and will ultimately adopt a Brandon Flowers persona on the show. I’m not saying he doesn’t have a good voice.

  • justantonio

mj could you also post the preview video for next week?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Nick Mitchell IS the final unknown member of the Top 36.

Duke, we were talking about that this afternoon in yesterday’s show thread. We were all over that today! :) .

I’m not too upset. I like Nick. The jury is still out on whether he can sing or not.

Brandon Flowers with some Freddie Mercury, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Axl Rose and maybe even a smidgen of Jeff Buckley — that’s a vocal tsunami.

I hope this doesn’t devolve into an oversinging competition.

  • Diana

Lots of drama queens this season.

Nate is too too much. Can’t believe he got through.

Rose was too much drama and affectation (the bare feet hurt her, imo) and not enough singing.

  • sunchick

pj, Brandon Flowers? Really? I’m thinking more Robbie Williams.

Headband sparkle shirt makes it through? Go on! That’s kind of awesome, in a trainwreck sort of way. The group sings will be fun if nothing else.

  • sma11ie

Michael said in his last message tonight that Idol called and said that they had to cut the boot camp part down to 5 minutes but they would show them during the recap next week.

That’s lame, I wanted to see it! They cut MJ and Carly for all that fake drama filler? Although… full disclosure, I didn’t actually watch the episode, but gathered from here that they had like 20-something minutes of “drama” before a single note was sung… WTF? Sounds like I didn’t miss much. Thanks for the caps, MJ. Of the caps I watched, I liked Matt Giraud. Will look out for Adam. Can’t remember the others. Will miss Rose.

  • Duke

    UGH-
I am always day late and a dollar short!!! Im still trying to soak that all in. Norman, Tatiana, and Von…

O_o !!! Can us fans make a cool name for the Adam/Danny/Matt trio???? Mannydam?

    Mannydam!

  • hypertwink

I like Danny’s group and I like Danny although I feel a little manipulated whenever he appears on my TV. Also, his best friend…he may have the best intentions but he comes off hanging onto Danny’s tragic coattails.

Anyway, Matt Girard was surprisingly good and Adam was awesome. I love him.

  • http://idolstages.com Connie D.

If it’s still the plan to have them all live in a house this year, it’s going to get interesting with Nick in the mix. I like his voice and antics a lot.

I love Adam, but I spent the whole time trying to figure out where all of that hair is coming from.

I like Jeremy Michael Sarver, but I would like him more if I could get over the fact that he reminds me of the guy who played the lead in “Beauty and The Beast”, Ron Perlman.

I really wanted to see Kai Kalama tonight, and Michael Castro.

  • Niall

I’m psyched about Nick Mitchell, Tatiana, Alex, Adam, Von, and Nate in the top 36. It is definitely going to be a VFTW kind of year. Thank you, American Idol!

Tatiana is the most narcissistic, self-centered person on this show. If she’s acting she’s doing one hell of a job.

I think Michael Castro is getting exactly the amount of airtime he deserves. The kid can’t really sing and he’s not terribly interesting. The show obviously doesn’t have much invested in him.

Danny Gokey needs to look in a mirror and realize he’s white. All that put on, affected urban type stuff he does makes him look as poseurish as Vanilla Ice.

  • sabby_rina

Wow when did idol become “the real world?” Um hello… idol, the last time I checked you were a singing competition. Did they not show the other groups because they couldn’t get the rights to the songs? I can understand if thats the case.

But more importantly, where was Anoop?!?!? I know he was at the very end of the preview for the next episode but I really wanted to see him during the group round. *sigh*

  • movin2thabeet

I have the feeling that Anoop is going to be very hot. I’m thinking that the burning question, “Where is Anoop?!” was anticipated, hence the miniscule droplet at the very end of the show. You know, keep em hungry and wanting more. Same thing with last night’s near complete absence of screen time for Adam. They know these guys are going to be mega-popular so they’re playing with us – no doubt about it.

  • risinggeneration

Well, for now, I am a FANGOOOOKEY!
    :jittery_tb:

    or DANIAMAFAN!

  • stelladallas

There seems to be more than enough talent this year to make the show interesting without all of the drama and reality show BS. Like many other posters here, I was also disappointed about the lack of time devoted to showing singing on tonight’s show.

Maybe we are seeing the effects of no Nigel this season.

  • dzbebepnai

gahhh anoop:) i loved that clip of him at the end. to me that was the best part of the episode. lol.

  • Keel

    On Adam:

Brandon Flowers with some Freddie Mercury, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Axl Rose and maybe even a smidgen of Jeff Buckley à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a vocal tsunami.

I hope this doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t devolve into an oversinging competition.

With Adam and Von in the Top 36, you never know. I’m definitely on the get-Von-off-my-TV-screen camp and am skeptical of Adam’s ability to deliver something non-theatrical. But if he wants to go in the glam rock direction, that would probably work for him.

  • Tony

Totally not on the Adam hype-train. Way too theater screamy for me.

  • sillypraguer

Wow. Looks like they went for 36 instead of 24 so that they could throw in as many crazies as possible. Glad some of them are there for funny factor rather than just drama. Nick seemed so surprised he even made it to hollywood. I’m looking forward to seeing his reaction to making the 36!! Hoping to see Scott and Kai next week. I think Danny’s a lock for top 12 after all the airtime.

Re: editors vs. producers, ITA that the editorial staff is great. Very good at what they do. I don’t always love the editing as much on the live shows, but they’re very skilled with all the audition/hollywood stuff. That’s a lot of footage to work through! The producers, however, not totally sold on them this season. Bikini girl ugh. Casey Carlson, Jasmine and Arianna are all a lot prettier. Inside and out, from what we’ve seen so far. But this season, unlike last, is not about nice.

  • daenarys

Another Cook fan rooting for Anoop here *waves*

Danny Gokey has a good voice but I have to admit I was totally put off when he started sobbing and spilling about his wife. It just bothered me. I wish he’d just said: I don’t wanna talk about it. In fact, it kind of confirms part of why I like David Cook so much.

Adam and Nick Mitchell are gonna be wild LOL.

And I think Stephen Fowler and Kai Kallama (where is he?) are the low-key darkhorses with the vocal chops.

  • seattle_girl

I’m hooked – loving Danny Gokey. I was surprised by Matt Giraud, maybe that dude CAN sing. And def liked Kris Allen whose audition I barely recalled – he’s cute and could go far with the girly voting bloc. I was hoping to hear from the little kid who makes horror flicks – I remembered being pleasantly surprised by his audition but nada since then.

Aside from the obviously appalling Tatiana, I am also NOT loving Jorge (thin voice and wayyy distracting eyebrows) or Michael Sarver (ho hum). And I am really not on the Adam fanwagon either, too OTT screamo dramatic for me.

  • Keel

Another Cook fan rooting for Anoop here *waves*

    Same here.

Unfortunately, I think I’ll be rooting in spirit only. I’m bailing on the rest of the season after tonight. I’d only kept up mainly to see if there was going to be any more DC pimpage like during the first week. However, tonight’s episode was just too irritating and reminded me why I lost patience with this show back in S1, besides being bored out of my skull, which this current season is also doing. I really enjoyed AI last year because of the good to great singing and performance skills. That was actually entertaining. The show’s highlighting of entitled, self-deluded, self-centered, backbiting contestants though? Not so much. I am just exhausted from the irritation I felt towards Tatiana and Bikini Girl and even Rose Flack. And they gave the good singers far too little screen time.

  • sillypraguer

Oh, and I’m so happy that we got to see a bit more India. The girl’s got charisma — too bad we won’t get to see her rapping in the top 36.

  • Grammie Kari

Anyone who missed the first 29 minutes of the show didn’t miss much unless you like drama. Now drama is fine if it focuses on the contestants who will make up the TOP 36. Tatiana is going to drive me crazy unless she does an about face.

Right now, the focus seems to be on the guys, and there are a lot of talented ones in the group. Yes, Danny, Anoop, and Adam have the talent going for them. Wish I was more excited. I hope we see more of the TOP 36 next week.

  • Joanna S.

Wow, I’m so happy that there are so many other Cook fans who love Anoop! If anyone is good enough to succeed Cookie, it’s definitely Anoop. I also love Adam and Danny but I like Anoop because he’s a bit more of an underdog than those two.

This is one episode that I wish could have been two hours long. Very irritated that we didn’t see Anoop’s group perform, he would have totally been in his element if he convinced his group to sing a capella.

I too am surprised that they are keeping Joanna Pacitti in the background, but it could be that TPTB want to keep attention away from her since she’s already gotten a lot of bad press…not that it will do much good. I don’t see her going any farther than Carly did last year, I think she’ll even be gone sooner than Carly because she’s a much worse plant. She does seem to have fans but I don’t think it will compare to Anoop’s, Adam’s or even Danny’s fanbases who are only growing more and more each week.

    justantonio Feb 5th, 2009 at 1:09 am

mj could you also post the preview video for next week?

Yes, please post it if you have it. Also, do you have the end of the show when they showed the ones who made it through to the next round but were not given air time singing? If so, please post, if possible. Thanks.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I guess Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m in the minority, but I *loved* the drama tonight!

As did I. I’ve always loved the drama, especially when they do groups, which is totally why I hated Katrina’s segment. Anyone who has even watched the show knows that you don’t get sleep during Hollywood week. Sleep before you get there!!!

    Rose’s feet were gross.

Wow, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m so happy that there are so many other Cook fans who love Anoop!

And, here’s another one. I’m also on the Danny train, but I love Anoop more. Can’t wait until his makeover. I love that Slezak called him a “sexy geek.” Yeah, the ability to sing and sing well, adds a whole other layer to an “ordinary” guy.

The rasp of Danny’s voice was phenomenal last night, and:

Danny Gokey needs to look in a mirror and realize heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s white. All that put on, affected urban type stuff he does makes him look as poseurish as Vanilla Ice.

I don’t think natural talent and doing what works has anything to do with the color of one’s skin.

I thoroughly enjoyed Alex Trugman tonight. He’s got some weird quirks while singing, but he definitely sounds like Clay Aiken. His group was hilariously awkward.

As for pimpage, I think we’re getting a lot of Gokey right now. I don’t know if that will taper off if he loses the best buddy.

None of the girls impressed me last night. Yeah, Kristen McNamara’s screaming didn’t do it for me, although she was the best one in her group.

am skeptical of Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ability to deliver something non-theatrical.

This is specifically why I’m not totally sold on him. I’m so irritated that we’ve heard only about 30 seconds of singing from him up until now. It makes me wonder why they insist on minimizing his screen time, and I don’t think it’s be it’s because he’s “he’ll-make-everyone-else-look-bad” good. In that montage, Matt Sarver still stood out more than Adam, at least for me. So, I don’t know. I’m interested to see more of what he’s got to deliver.

I’m finally in the judges’ corner about the guys being stronger this season.

  • Lu

Danny and Matt for the top 2!!! I’m not really a Mannydam fan… just Manny… lol.

  • PokeSmot

I LUUVVEDD Nick Mitchell! He be da BOMB!!

Actually, I just really enjoy his act and I believe he can really sing, unfortunately for me, I don’t believe he is serious about his time on Idol and is doing Idol for the exposure. I think he’d rather be professional comedian. He still can SANG, though.

My ponies (gonna ride them) are Danny and Adam.

Dang! Wish they would have had these group auditions last season

Did anyone else notice that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s groupà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was actually a montage of performances of THREE different groups???

I didn’t at first because I couldn’t get past Adam, but after I rewatched my DVR a few numerous times, oh heck yeah I noticed. THEN it irritated me. I was going to say the editing was creative this year, but then I realized it’s not creative when it’s that badly put together. I have no doubt that the judges expressions throughout the performances and their comments could have been linked to any other group number than the three we saw together. Who knows. I don’t usually notice the blatant editing that badly but have they really just slacked this season or what? I mean I’ve always known they edited or maybe I’m just really paying attention all of a sudden, but this year it is just SCREAMING at me.

I guess Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m in the minority, but I *loved* the drama tonight!

I do too. I tune into Hollywood knowing that it is nothing BUT drama. I enjoy the tears(although it makes me feel a bit awful getting so much enjoyment out of watching people’s chance go away). I do wish they had shown more singing, but I ADORE the drama.

  • Jolene

Dang! Wish they would have had these group auditions last season

I just thought how we probably would have gotten a 4 Horsemen group audition. I don’t care much for Luke or Jason Yeager, but I would have loved to hear what they could all come up with.

But, the way this year’s Hollywood week was edited, I feel like they’re really not showing us that many good performances, so who knows, maybe if they’d done it last year we would have gotten something similar. Although – is it just my faulty memory, or are there alot more trainwrecks in Hollywood this time around?

  • danceinsidex3

I’m quickly becoming a Matt (the piano guy) fan. I liked his audition, but wasn’t completely sold on him, but I think I am now. I think he’ll make it surprisingly far. And I’m not exactly sure why, but for some reason, he kind of reminds me of Austin Nichols.

I love, love, love Adam. Its not even his voice (which is pretty freaking amazing, btw) that I love that much. And its not his looks either. I’m not sure what it is, but I LOVE him. He’s pretty fabulous.

Anoop is another one of my faves. He’s great and really adorable. I love him.

I also really like Danny, but if he becomes one of those contestants constantly shoved down our throats, I may end up turning on him, which is really sad. I really don’t want that to happen.

I definitely think the boys are much stronger this season. The girls haven’t made much of an impression on me thus far.

In my perfect world Adam, Anoop, Danny and Matt (alphabetical order) would be the top 4 this season. Very unlikely, but ideal.

  • anijsch

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m quickly becoming a Matt (the piano guy) fan.

I am there with you. Imo he has something special in his voice an it factor, which can bring him a very long way.

I can’t wait to hear him sing a whole song.

Did anyone else notice that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s groupà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was actually a montage of performances of THREE different groups???

Yes, I noticed that and I agree. The editors did some crazy seamless work there. If I hadn’t been really paying attention trying to see who was in what group, I never would have noticed.

I guess Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m in the minority, but I *loved* the drama tonight!

Me too Michelle. But I pretty much admitted that upthread and I don’t feel bad about it. :) Group Night is one of my favorite parts of Hollywood because it really shows us the character and attitude of the contestants.

Also, I have to believe that after the Sanjaya debacle, TPTB wouldn’t have put Nick/Norman into the top 36 unless he showed some vocal promise. I’ll definitely be curious to see how he does from here on out.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Also, I have to believe that after the Sanjaya debacle, TPTB wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have put Nick/Norman into the top 36 unless he showed some vocal promise.

This is why I’m wondering if he really can sing…?

  • flicker

My favorite part of the show was the small bit that Matt (piano guy) sang. It was really good – I love the rasp in his voice, and he wasn’t overwrought, just a really good, on pitch vocal, and his rhythm was right (and tight). The other two guys seemed slightly out of time to me. I liked his whole group, but he was best, IMO.

I also really like India’s sweet face; she’s lovable on stage.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

This is specifically why Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not totally sold on him. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m so irritated that weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard only about 30 seconds of singing from him up until now. Well, couldn’t we say that about practically everyone though? NO one, except maybe Danny who was heavily featured on both shows this week, has gotten much actual singing time so far. Tonight was the first time we’ve seen Matt Giraud and Kris Allen since their auditions and they got just about as much screen time as Adam did tonight.

ETA: Taylor Vafainua too, who IIRC was rumored to be a big judges’ fave during Hollywood week. And both Anoop and Jackie Tohn got about the same amount of screen time on Tuesday night that Adam, Taylor, Matt, and Kris got last night.

Honestly, while some stories and contestants are getting more screen time, whether it’s singing or backstory or drama or whatever, I think TPTB are actually doing a pretty good job of introducing us to the top 36 this season. Like I said last night, by my count, there are now only 4 that we haven’t seen at all yet, with 2 more shows to go before the top 36 starts.

  • SpenserJ

This makes me because I am a closet fan of pre-Whitney Bobby Brown. (Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t judge.)

No need to be in the closet – I’m out and proud. I love that song, and I can’t wait to watch Anoop sing it!

pj, Brandon Flowers? Really? Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thinking more Robbie Williams.

Really? Last night when I was watching him, I was totally thinking Liza Minelli. Because that’s who he reminds me of.

I want to take back what I said about Danny’s friend Jamar – he’s better than I thought he was. Danny was good last night too.

I also liked Matt and Jeremy quite a bit.

  • hicksaholic

So I didn’t see Kendall Beard. Did I just miss her or has she only been shown
for that 5 second audition clip?

  • mary111

I hated tonight. Way to much drama for me. I wanted to see more singing. We saw bikini girl for half the show….I cant stand her or Katiana. I do like to see some drama but certainly not this much. I want to see singing since it is a singing competition.

I really like Anoop. I like Danny as a person but don’t really like his singing. I like Adam also.

  • cheese

I liked the Katrina drama and Tatiana thanking Jesus and the “soundstick” guy, but I guess I would have liked a little more actual singing, too. Of the groups we heard, I thought Matt sounded great, Jesse Langseth, too. So many people are still oversinging at this stage of the game. To my ears, Danny waaaay overdid it on Somebody to Love. Not pleasant for me. Same with Adam – boy is talented but I don’t like the key of screech.

  • savgal

Got home late last night, so glad there was “filler” before the REAL singing, so I didn’t miss anything. My husband, who gamely watches along with me, must have been paying more attention than I thought last year, because he said they did not do the groups last year, and now I remember he’s right. Forgot how much I loved them.
Sloppy editing or no, I LOVED the montage of “Some Kind of Wonderful”! Yay, got some Jessica Langseth screentime! Heard her brother Jonny Lang a few years ago in a small venue (small enough for Greg Allman to be sitting in the front row aisle seat) and besides his awesome guitar playing, guy had the widest vocal range I have ever heard in a man. Jessie apparently plays guitar, too–can you imagine a girl playing blues guitar on Idol?
LOVED White Chocolate!!! LOVED Rainbow Coalition!!! Both of them could go on the road right now. We’re gonna have some great group songs this year, y’all……

  • MaryS-NJ

I finally get it – Adam, that is. That was a hot performance and he’s got amazing stage presence.
In fact, I thought all (3?) groups that did Some Kind of Wonderful were fabulous.
I thought India, Matt, Kris and Justin were great.
I thought Danny’s group was good too.

The rest of it? Oy vey. Tatiana appears to be a narcissist. She annoys me to no end, which probably means she’ll be around for a while. Katrina is a one-trick pony and the trick isn’t fun anymore. I got sick of Nathaniel’s tears, Nancy’s bitiching and Rose’s grousing.

All the DRAMA was grating. As my husband likes to say, “Funny once.” It got really stale as the episode progressed. But that Hollywood week.

  • hardkandy

I love Adam Lambert!!! BOY CAN SANG!!!

  • lefty

She reminds me of that annoying one-upper character Kristin Wiig plays on SNLà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦the one who shows up uninvited to random group functions and makes it all about her.

OMG! You are so right. :lol_tb: Tatiana is all kinds of crazy. I think it spilled over onto some of her groupmates too – the whole vibe was really bizarre.

  • templeton

I really liked Matt Breitzke from his audition and that little snippet from the group rounds. Usually when I like them, they are doomed but I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.

  • folk

    Ok…I like drama night:)

However, I never jump on a train this early. We have hardly seen anyone except the stories the producers like….therefore, I find it hard to make any kind of informed decision:) For instance, until Tuesday night Stephen Fowler was not even on my radar. Next week things will get clearer, and first night of actual competition. Until then…it is all manipulated segments aimed at certain demographics.

That being said….people I am watching at this point….

    Anoop
    Stephen Fowler
    Adam
Jasmine (I think she could be the female marketing genius they love)

    I personally like Nick/Normand a lot:)

And I suspect there are one or two more that will “wow” us next week…only in that we have not really been exposed to them yet.

  • lefty

Jasmine (I think she could be the female marketing genius they love)

Actually, I like Jasmine too. She maintained her poise despite the wretched situation she was in.

  • folk

oh templeton, i agree breitzke was cool. so was sarver…actually that whole group was.

  • Frogpond

Just now getting to make a comment ,site wouldn’t connect for me last night .

I really am liking Matt the dualing piano guy ,Kris Allen who I still have only seen bits and pieces of .
Adam is ok better than Nate and Von but they seem to me all in the same boat .
Not feeling the Anoop love .
Wanted to see Kai and Brent haven’t seen them since audtion .
Not really liking the girls Jasmine sings through her nose to much .
Jesse Langseth not bad what I could hear as well as Kristen M.

Now is next week more of the same on Tuesday or no?

Do we have a chair episode this time ?

  • t2

So no one else wants to talk about “Paula’s skeery eyes” BWAH!!!

I love, love, love the real Hollywood rounds.

Unlike the fake-Hollywood-give-them-a-second-chance-and-don’t-challenge–them-at-all-so-we-can-put-through-the-people-we-want-to Hollywood rounds they had last year. Seriously, I still have a bored-blah taste in my mouth from the boredom that was last year’s half hour Hollywood. This is not a knock on the talent from last year, because I love me some Michael Johns, but why have a non-challenging Hollywood week….which is why I am practically giddy that they have brought back the lack-of-sleep-group-sing-melodrama-make-it-a-competition HOLLYWOOD!!!!

And how sweet was it that Kara got to send Bikini Girl home. Heh!

  • tierbee

For a show that loves to do too-long two hour episodes… this time I think they could’ve done two hours easily! I was ashamedly entertained, but definitely got antsy waiting for the singing to start. Once it did, I was wishing for more. I’m still not sure about Adam… no doubt he can sing but… Nice to see a little glimpse of Anoop ;)

  • latecomer

Danny Gokey is still a favorite, and Matt Giraud and Kris Allen could be real underdogs. Anoop is great and he has a built in fan base already. And I now see the potential (for AI) of Adam Lambert. When his name was first leaked, I watched some of his you tube videos and thought he was wildly entertaining. But he did seem theatrical, someone that you would need to see live to appreciate. But with his audition and last night, I am starting to think that he could be a pop star and that I might actually buy his record. I definitely prefer his lower and mid range vocals, but there is no denying that he has quite a range. So I look forward to seeing more. Gee, after they cut Jessica Furney and Deanna Brown now there aren’t really any girls left that I can remember distinctly (in a good way!). Too bad there has to be a top girl and a top guy each week. This would be the year for an all guy top 12 – much last Canadian Idol last year!

  • Dr. Tracey

I loved India, Matt B and Matt G of who we saw sing last night.

The whole bikini girl thing was just annoying and wasted too much time, I wonder if they paid her for all that melodrama :rolleyes_wp:

I’m disappointed we haven’t seen more Felicia Barton, thought I might have caught a glimpse of her last night but they flash them by so fast it’s hard to tell. Whether she made it or not i’ll be checking her out further.

Unless it’s the editing it was plainly obvious to me last night that the judges already have their list and this whole ‘audition’ process is for ratings purposes. It’s also plainly obvious that I invest way too much time on this show ‘cos I dreamt about Trugman last night (not THAT kind of dream LOL), I need to get a life.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

This is specifically why Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not totally sold on him. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m so irritated that weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard only about 30 seconds of singing from him up until now. It makes me wonder why they insist on minimizing his screen time, and I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s be ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll-make-everyone-else-look-badà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ good.

Well, couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t we say that about practically everyone though? NO one, except maybe Danny who was heavily featured on both shows this week, has gotten much actual singing time so far. Tonight was the first time weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen Matt Giraud and Kris Allen since their auditions and they got just about as much screen time as Adam did tonight.

The same can absolutely be said about everyone, but I’m not interested in hearing everyone else. I need to hear more Adam Lambert before the competition starts. I need to make up my mind about him. That’s why I’m irritated, not to take away from the ones who have been featured, because I like some of them too.

  • Hazehel

Finally they showed a couple of people I can listen to – Matt Giraud (which is a bit surprisingly) and Adam. Jasmine sounded good, but I’m sorry about Rose – she seems too naive and inexperienced to be stuck with an absolute bitch in her group.

I do believe what Simon said about wanting more drama last year is what sending some of the contestants through – Tatiana for her sheer hysterics (even if I think that she does have an interesting voice), someone you can hate, and Norman for the comedy/controversy aspect. And that Nate, the least said about him the better.

  • Dr. Tracey

“This would be the year for an all guy top 12 – much last Canadian Idol last year!”

    —————————
Yes! I’ve was thinking the same thing.

  • IdolFanatic

We know that the pimping of at least one contestant happens every year…no surprise there. I don’t give sh*t how much they pimp Danny, he deserves the praise he’s getting because he pretty much kicks everyone else’s ass as far as I’m concerned. But I do like a few others as well as him.

  • butter

Another Cook fan rooting for Anoop here *waves*

    Ditto.

I agree with the person who said it looks like they went from 24 to 36 just to throw more crazies into the mix. Also, there’s a lot of consistency in who everyone is really passionate about thus far…and I don’t see a girl listed among them. Is this really because the guys are so much better this year, or is it because they’re only showing us the really good guys and a bunch of other annoying people?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Really? Last night when I was watching him, I was totally thinking Liza Minelli. Because thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s who he reminds me of.

    Totally!!!!

  • tinawina

I liked the drama. LOL. It was entertaining. Plus, you get to see who can hack the pressure.

I also am not worried about who they have and have not shown singing. They have one more Hollywood episode to go, so most everyone will get their turn.

Danny was much better this time. Jasmine is getting me in her corner, I was very impressed with how she handled herself. Bikini Girl was completely ridiculous. Rose needed to go home. Tatiana got the crazy edit, and it looks like she deserved it. That Nancy and Nate were both OTT drama queens, I kinda felt sorry for Kristen but she did seem a little condescending after a while. Anoop rocked his little clip, Matt Geraurd can sing (who knew?), Alex sang his little nerdy face off. Huge Somoan Girl looked totally different and sang well. That little clip of the Lang sister was cool. Adam is way over the top to me, though he can sing.

The interesting thing so far is that I think they’ve given decent screen time to more that 12 contestants. That is going to make the whole top 12 process very, very interesting.

  • Jolene

Is this really because the guys are so much better this year, or is it because theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re only showing us the really good guys and a bunch of other annoying people?

I think it’s the latter. The editing in this show really makes or breaks you in the early weeks. I know Felicia Barton is good only because I heard the hype surrounding her here based on her own material – watching Idol, I wouldn’t be able to say she was ever there. If you’re not shown, you don’t exist, and it doesn’t matter how talented you are and what you have to offer.
The sad thing this year, is that with the new-old format there’s alot less chance that the under-hyped will move forward than there was last year. This year, I think Jason Castro would not have moved forward into the finals. Each person only has one performance to wow the crowd, and only the top 3 move on… I really like Stevie Wright based on her audition, but right now I don’t see much chance she’ll make it into the Top 12, as she hasn’t been seen since.

  • abbysee

Tatiana might be the first person to make me wanna root for the producers to villify her. Hell, I will happily grab a torch and pitchfork and chase her out of the village.

If you need a posse, call me!

I liked the Katrina drama and Tatiana thanking Jesus and the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“soundstickà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ guy,

That produced much mirth in my home. My son said “didn’t someone tell her Jesus got booted last night? LOL!

This is why Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m wondering if he really can singà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦?

I think that’s going to be the deal, surprise!

Actually, I like Jasmine too. She maintained her poise despite the wretched situation she was in.

I like poise, that is why certain people stick out for me, the ability to maintain your cool when all the nuts around you are losing theirs.

  • lefty

    Rose needed to go home.

Yeah, I really liked her audition and I like her voice, but she seems waaay to fragile to handle the pressure. I would not have enjoyed watching her break down.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Yay, got some Jessica Langseth screentime! Heard her brother Jonny Lang a few years ago in a small venue (small enough for Greg Allman to be sitting in the front row aisle seat) and besides his awesome guitar playing, guy had the widest vocal range I have ever heard in a man. Jessie apparently plays guitar, tooà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’can you imagine a girl playing blues guitar on Idol?

Hoping she at least makes Top 10 so that perhaps we can get her and Jonny to do a duet at the finale!!!!

  • folk

i am not all about danny. his glasses really annoy me. he is like part boy band/part pretend soul singer. yup. not doing it for me.

  • bean99

I wish they’d cut some of the so-called drama last night and given us some of Michael & Carly. I like groups night but it would have been nice to see more singing and much less of bikini girl and Tatiana.

I thought that it was a montage of different groups when they showed Adam and the others but didn’t go back to check. I’m a little surprised how many people love him because I thought his audition was way too theatrical even though he was better last night. He could be compared to Von if he doesn’t dial it back a bit.

  • dvls

I was disappointed that they didn’t show David Osmond’s group last night. I really wanted to see why he was cut. Well, the explanation he is giving on his myspace is that he got laryngitis on group day and sang with no voice. So maybe they did him a favor by not showing it.

  • IdolFanatic

Adam Lambert sang with two girls and some other guy we never saw separately, Jeremy Sarver was in a group of three guys, and Matt Brietzke and Jesse Langseth shared yet another group.

Woah…thanks for pointing that out. I thought I was going crazy there! You’re absolutely right! Wow! So much editing and manipulation.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Adam Lambert: What’s with judges’ love of shrill oversinging?

Thank you, Michael Slezak. Let’s hope he doesn’t do it all season.

I just watched Jesse Langseth’s video again. I think she’s gonna be my favorite girl. She’s pretty awesome…and different.

  • IdolFanatic

i am not all about danny. his glasses really annoy me.

:lol_tb: Sorry but that comment just made laugh my butt off for some reason.

  • ohnonotagain

Save us from those two girls , Katrina and the other nut and Rose too. There are some good guy singers but waiting for that special someone (ie: David Cook ) to bring me in. There is something about him that makes him special, and his singing gets better and better. ” Little Lies” at Kyle’s bd party is fantastic. That higher register is the best. Take a listen. Trying to be someone else’s fan too but it will take some more trying.

  • J.S.G.

For me it was a riveting hour of television which could easily have been extended to two hours. Why only show the groups that were dysfunctional?
I would have also enjoyed seeing groups that displayed instant chemistry and pulled it off with a stellar performance. Take Danny Gokey’s “Rainboow Coalition” for an example. How did that group achieve that amazing harmony in such a short period of time? What role did Danny’s background as a music teacher play in tht composition?
And that wasn’t the only group that shone.
Why the over emphasis on the melodramatic and the excessive camera time given to those two bimbos?

The real star of last night’s show was Jasmine Murray. The look on that girl’s face while those around her were losing their minds was priceless. And then she steps up and nails that vocal, in a voice that is so soulful it is hard to believe she is only 16 years old.

But this is a teenager whose parents(like Jordin Sparks’ parents), earned a grade of A in Child Rearing 101.

  • itsalleternal

For Lil Rounds, today is definitely going to be an emotional day.

It was one year ago today that she lost her home to a tornado.

  • BootStar

OK, some more thoughts – Loved Adam, he was the sole bright spot of the ep for me. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m glad I have someone to root for this season.
Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m over Danny, did not like what he did at the group sing. I know many Cook fans like him, but I guess I just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see the appeal. And heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s already overpimped by the show.

This Cook fans loves Anoop and Adam. Danny is okay, but I think he might be a better arranger or lead singer in a boy band than solo artist. He seems like Cook at 3/4 strength.

I like poise, that is why certain people stick out for me, the ability to maintain your cool when all the nuts around you are losing theirs.

I so totally agree with this, which I why I love Anoop and Adam and strangely enough Normund/Nick. I thought Jasmine was meh at her audition, but I was really impressed with how she kept her cool last night. She sounded great and she is gorgeous.

  • folk

sometimes it is helpful to get out of the David Cook paradigm…there have been 7 american idols….and they are not all david cook…in fact they are all pretty much different. so somehow, i doubt AI is looking for another david cook.

  • waffle

I am a Cook fan through and through, so I never thought I’d say this — I want more of Adam Lambert! Aside from his singing, his “look” last night (i.e., his outfit and yes, his hair and make-up) made him stand out from everyone else. It’s too bad they showed very little of him! From the little I saw, though, next week can’t come soon enough! I’m sooo looking forward to seeing him perform again!

  • tinawina

Uhhh… are we taking inventory of “Cook fan” votes now? LOL. This whole line of conversation is kinda odd to me.

I think I’m alone on this but I think we’ve seen a lot of good, interesting singers this year. I’m optimistic about the final 12.

  • Jolene

there have been 7 american idolsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.and they are not all david cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦in fact they are all pretty much different. so somehow, i doubt AI is looking for another david cook.

I agree. In fact, people on TWoP have suggested that Idol never had two winners who were very similar, and that would work against anyone who had much resemblance to Cook.
I’ve mostly seen people compare him to either Danny or Adam, but neither of them is a rocker so really I think the comparisons stem simply from him being last year’s winner. I think as the competition moves on and people carve their own niche, we’ll see less and less comparisons.

  • leome

I like Danny’s friend more than Danny, I don’t really see anything interesting about Danny, the voice is just ok for me and I don’t think he has a good presence.

Jasmine is surprising me, she’s showing to have a lot to give.

Also liking Jesse. We didn’t see her audition did we? I can see her becoming one of my favs.
Adam is the best of the guys, but I like Anoop and Norman too.
I haven’t seen the whole episode yet, but where’s Brent? I liked his audition, show me more of him.

  • JudyOhio

I guess I’m the only one seeing this, but Adam’s tongue (yes tongue) bothers me. I first noticed on his youtubes. He has a tendency to lay his tongue out over this lower lip when he goes into the bigger, louder notes (the screech part if you will). It’s not so noticable now because it happened in a group shot far away at the last part of what he was singing. When the show features him alone and in those real close ups, it’s going to be more pronounced. Anyway, as much as I like DA, I sometimes don’t like the lip licking and as much as I like DC, I sometimes don’t like his loud-note scrunch face, and now same with Adam, I just don’t like it when he lays his tongue out flat on the loud, reaching, holding notes. Well, that’s all I had to say for now. Sorry if I sound all picky picky! lol

  • tierbee

JudyOhio, I noticed that too — I think it’s another reason I’m not sure I like him (I know, picky) but he looks like a lizard when he does that ;)

  • daenarys

aaww, we’re just a little nostalgic that’s all. Last season was such a beeyootiful one for us. It’ll take a while to Let Go.

On the girls: Jesse is awesome, I didn’t see that one coming at all. I like Anne-Marie, but she kind of underwhelmed in this round – it could’ve been her crappy group dynamic LOL. I’m waiting to see what Meghan will do. And count me in as stupefied if it’s confirmed that Felicia didn’t make it, because that girl’s gotta voice alright.

  • primeminister

Jesse Langseth is probably the only girl from whom I’m interested in hearing more. She has a slightly deeper voice, which I like.

I agree with Slezak, she smoked the guys’ versions of “Some Kind of Wonderful.”

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

I wish we’d seen more of why some people didn’t make it through. I really loved Deanna Brown’s audition and all I got last night was that she still knew she could sing. I want to know what happened!

Ha – Mj – Tatiana and Bikini nasty person – are the two that stood out in the worst way last night, I was literally yelling at the TV for Tatiana to SHUT UP – oh I cannot believe they are subjecting us to her another week but oh Hallelujah that mean and nasty Bikini girl is gone. For anyone that might have had doubts about her inside AND out – last night erased that I would hope

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

I liked Adam – I did and that is too funny – an emo Taylor Hicks – I can see that!

  • itsalleternal

Bobbi – I heard that Deanna’s cut was one of the most surprising among everyone there. I don’t know why she was cut, maybe it was because she was seen as a threat to the chosen ones? Either way, she was completely robbed…

  • whosefanryou

I thought Deanna was cut because she was one of the ones who forgot lyrics, but now I can’t remember what gave me that impression.

Loved Adam. Still feeling almost an irrational level of dislike towards Danny. New loves are Matt Giraud, Kris Allen, Michael Sarver and Jesse Langseth. I’m continuing to enjoy Jasmine and think she’s shown worlds of improvement since her initial audition.

I initially loved Rose but thought she very possibly wasn’t a good enough singer for the competition, but last night I found her completely ordinary and lacking the charm she seemed to have before, so I’m not sorry to see her go after all.

I was looking forward to hearing more from Anoop, but have to say that I wasn’t at all impressed by that snippet at the end and I’m disappointed to know that awful, awful song is what he’s singing next week. Bah.

  • t2

Loved that we actually got to get more than 1 second of Kris Allen. Yum.

    But my big question is:

Where the heck is Ryan Johnson.

    Boo Hiss on TPTB.

“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m over Danny, did not like what he did at the group sing. I know many Cook fans like him, but I guess I just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see the appeal.”

    ———-

This Cook fan doesn’t like him so far.

  • kerfuffle

It looked to me like Michael Castro was shown with his whole group getting through. Very irritated that we haven’t heard him (or Ryan P.A. Johnson – Word: t2) since his (their) audition(s). Thrilled that Bikini Bee-yotch is gone. Can’t stand Tatianna, and her group performance wasn’t strong enough to get her through, imo. No way she survives the first elimination vote.

I like Adam, Alex, Anoop, Danny, Michael Sarver and a few more of the guys. Want to see Stevie again. Jesse is also good for the girls. I like Jasmine, and agree she showed a lot of poise. I may have missed a few, but until I see (hear) more, those will do for now.

  • milajoy

I heard that the group India Morrison, Matt Giraud, Kris Allen and Justin Williams aka à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“White Chocolate – that sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Want You Backà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that Matt arranged that song. He’s suppose to be amazing at “making each song his own” WOW right.

So, by my count, of those on the top 36 list, we still havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t heard anything from Jeanine Vailes, Junot Joyner, Mishavonna Henson, and Ricky Braddy. Is that all?

Thats it. Pretty good Hollywoods not done and we only have 4 to see.

  • itsalleternal

I’m still angry that 75% of the air time was devoted to Katrina and Tatiana…it was like they were the only stars of the show…

  • primeminister

Really? Wow, that’s impressive! Hopefully we’ll see more of it during the semi-finals.

I saw a video of Matt playing “Walking in Memphis” (in his one dueling-piano way) and it was great! If he doesn’t fall apart during the competition, I can see him going deep.

  • jpfan

An all male top 12 will never happen even though some here would like it. Probably because 99% of the posters here are female. You’ll have to vote for one or two – Matt, Danny, Brandon, Adam, etc. etc. or the votes will get split and none will make it through. Remember Syesha Mercado?

  • butter

I was looking forward to hearing more from Anoop, but have to say that I wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t at all impressed by that snippet at the end and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m disappointed to know that awful, awful song is what heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s singing next week. Bah.

I had totally forgotten all about that.

  • 2dogs

It’s totally manufactured drama and totally cheesy, but I enjoyed the return of the group sing. My only complaint is that I wish they would have made this an 1 1/2 hour episode as I would have liked to have heard more actually singing by the different groups and seen the performances by some of those “early favorites” they cut.

  • Fender

I heard that the group India Morrison, Matt Giraud, Kris Allen and Justin Williams aka à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“White Chocolate – that sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Want You Backà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that Matt arranged that song. Impressive, I thought it was a very good arrangement. If he combines that skill with the singing voice he demonstrated on last night’s show, I could definitely be a fan. And I certainly didn’t think I would ever be saying that after his audition lol

  • Michelle

My only complaint is that I wish they would have made this an 1 1/2 hour episode as I would have liked to have heard more actually singing by the different groups

True…but I think the group performance challenge is less about singing, cause they’ve all been vetted for voice already, and more about putting them in a high pressure situation and seeing how they deal. (and drama, of course.)

Cause honestly, the 12 hours or so they give them is not enough time for any random group of strangers to realistically put together a good routine unless you luck into a group that clicks immediately.

  • SpenserJ

Jesse Langseth is probably the only girl from whom Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m interested in hearing more.

Ah yes. I had trouble remembering her name, but I agree, she’s got potential.

GwendolynD, I’ll be referring to Adam as Liza from here on out – at least you’ll know what I’m talking about :)

I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m down with the vote that Nick/Norman can actually sing. I’ll happily eat my words if I’m wrong – he’s been worth at least the entertainment value for me.

  • Jocelin

I thought Matt sounded great, Jesse Langseth, too. So many people are still oversinging at this stage of the game. To my ears, Danny waaaay overdid it on Somebody to Love. Not pleasant for me. Same with Adam – boy is talented but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like the key of screech.

Well, I have to agree with this. I think Matt has great stage presence and he still allowed the others to shine. Jesse may just be the girl I’m rooting for if she sings that well all the time. Yeah, Danny may have overdone it a bit. He was still good though. Even with the frantic edit cutting between Adam’s and the other two groups, I got the sense that Adam was showboating and singing over the other singers, musically muscling his way in. It could be argued that he was simply out-performing the others- I get that, but something about his performance just irked me a little bit. I can’t quite pinpoint why.

GwendolynD, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be referring to Adam as Liza from here on out – at least youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll know what Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m talking about :)

    Indubitably!!!

LOL GwendolyD – thank you for that awesome gift! That is truly a keeper :)

WHat ever happened to the young girl who sang her own song, “Nati” at the auditions that the judges raved about? They havent even shown a picture of her in hollywood…i wonder what happened to her. It will be weird not hearing anything about her ever again. Maybe she ditched hollywood for a record deal??

  • hcpoirot

Judging from the exposure they got and the vocal they had, Adam L, Anoop and Danny are shoo in for top 12 finalists. Except that they picked very wrong song and sang horribly wrong which I doubted.

Suprisingly Matt (with a goatee) also had decent exposure in AI8. And also Matt G. If they picked the right song they had the chances too. Also Alex . He got decent exposure at audition and Hollywood round.

From the girls side, maybe only Lil Round who definitely move to top 12. Even if she didnot get people votes, she will 100% got the jury wild card. AI always had one or more diva alike vocalist each year.

Other shoo in had to be Jasmine. Jasmine had to thanks Hollywood R 2 episode who shown so much about Katrina drama cause she also got enough exposure here. Not to mention she handled the drama well. She is only 16, got a good vocal and good attitude= votes.

This year from audiences will choose 9 finalist. At least 5 of them will be boys or even more , judging from lack of the girls talent so far.

I am hoping the producers clever enough to separate the front runners in different groups. Remember season 2 when they put Ruben, Clay and Kim Locke in the same group when only 2 singers will emerge from each groups.

Not suprisingly, 3 of them also were the top 3 in the final 12.

Adam Lambert hollywood performance playcount for today: 100

i think he is going to walk this season

  • Jx223

I thought that Adam did a great job last night. I really like his voice, and I like that he can wail.

Matt Giraud, kind of surprised me in a good way. I thought that his voice was mediocre when he first auditioned, but last night he sounded better in his group performance. I enjoyed that performance and thought that he and his group did a good job.

Jasmine is another contestant who I think sounds better during Hollywood week than she did in her initial audition. I’m not crazy about her voice, but she sung songs, the last two nights that fit her better, than the Fergie song she auditioned with.

Jesse Langseth sounded pretty good. I know that she wasn’t shown a lot but I definitely think that she is probably the best girl I’ve seen so far. I think that she’s definitely one to watch.

Jeremy Michael Sarver is likeable and cute. I don’t know how far he will go, but I think that he might be an underdog who could do decently in this competition.

Nate is overly dramatic, but IMO, he doesn’t have a bad voice. I saw a video of him singing “Bleeding Love” on youtube and he sounded good. Maybe if he tones down the dramatics he can do at least okay in this competition.

I wish Tatiana would just go away. IMO, she’s worse than Bikini Girl, and some of the other unpleasant contestants combined. The judges looked annoyed and unimpressed with her last night, yet they still put her through.

Anoop! :wub_tb: Love him. He’s my favorite contestant this season. We didn’t get to see his group last night but I think that the few seconds snippet of his performance next week of “My Prerogative” sounded like it could end up being awesome. I’m definitely rooting for him.

Adam Lambert hollywood performance playcount for today: 100

Duke, I’m ashamed to admit how many times I’ve watched that. Ashamed. I’ve always had a thing for theater guys. I guess that’s what hooked me. That and just the fact that he has the total package, imo.

I cannot WAIT to see him do a stripped down ballad that’s all about the vocals. I want to see if he can pull it off without the theatrics and affectations and crazy ridiculous high notes. I think he can, but I want to see it.

You know, watching his youtube videos back in November or whenever, I wasn’t 100% sure that I would love him. I was intrigued and wanted to see more. But not sold. But he impressed me a lot at his audition and last night sealed the deal. He is now officially “spring tv boyfriend” – even though he doesn’t necessarily roll that way. LOL.

So yeah, now I’m just PRAYING that he won’t let me down. I almost never pick a fave during the Hollywood rounds then stick with them the whole season because normally my Hollywood round fave crashes and burns. Or no one stands out to me enough for me to pick them early on. Only time I’ve actually ever done it was season 4 with Bo. Every other year, it’s been the semi’s before I nail down a fave.

If Adam proves vocally versatile and can nail a non-bombastic ballad, I think he could be hard to stop. I’m just wondering what kind of album he’d make…

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO LENESHA YOUNG? SHE’S THE ONE WHO SANG HER OWN SONG “NATTI”. I THOUGHT SHE WAS AMAZING!

Adam Lambert hollywood performance playcount for today: 100

Um, me too? Lol. Is it bad that I’m pretty sure I achieved that number late last night and this morning in the amount of time I watched it before I went to work and then wasn’t sure how I could make it through the workday without watching it?

I’m way too enamored with this guy.

I just can’t wait to see where this guy would go.

You know, watching his youtube videos back in November or whenever, I wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t 100% sure that I would love him. I was intrigued and wanted to see more. But not sold. But he impressed me a lot at his audition and last night sealed the deal.

You know I thought the same thing. HAving seen his youtube videos I wasn’t jumping up and down over it but I had flagged him as a person of interest upon audition, and then last night happened and now I can look at the youtube videos with a whole new appreciation.

I don’t know what it is about him. Technically he isn’t someone I would probably like in general, but all of a sudden I’m very fixated.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

then wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sure how I could make it through the workday without watching it?

OMG, that wasn’t just me at work cursing the fact that I can’t get to any video sharing sites from my work computer?!?!?

I think I need help. I TOLD myself that I was not going to get invested this year. And yet, here I am again… invested.

    *sigh*

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know what it is about him. Technically he isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t someone I would probably like in general, but all of a sudden Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m very fixated.

I think it’s that it isn’t JUST his singing, or JUST that he’s “theatrical”, or JUST that he has stage presence or JUST this or that… I really do think the guy screams star potential (literally AND figuratively for some, perhaps. ;) ). He has the “it” factor.

He’s also gonna be very polarizing, I can already tell. :) Love him or hate him, practically no in between. But I have plenty of experience with being a fan of polarizing contestants, luckily. lol.

  • star

I don’t think we’ve seen Kendall Beard at all in the Hollywood episodes, have we? I’m also really disappointed in the lack of Felicia. :(

And, speaking of stuff we haven’t seen, no usage of “The Freshmen” yet either.

Adam. *waves white flag* :wub_tb: :wub_tb: :wub_tb: Loved him last night. I hope when he gets to the voting rounds he’ll choose some songs that show off his lower range, because it’s completely sublime. I honestly think that boy can sing ANYTHING. And LOL at the Liza comparison. I’ve seen people saying he looks like everyone from Joe Jonas to Pete Wentz to Ashton Kutcher.

Suddenly I really want to hear Adam sing New York, New York!

  • jammasta

So far my favorites seem to be Lil Rounds, Danny Gokey, Michael Sarver, Matt Giraud, and Adam Lambert (although he could do away with the goth/rocker look that I really hate). I don’t like Tatiana or Nate. But I really loved the White Chocolate group Jesse Langseth’s group. I liked Paula’s evil eyes.

I’m sad about Emily Wynne-Hughes leaving. Normally I hate the rockers since it’s my least favorite music form, but she had something going on there, and she was one of my favorites.

  • JOJOSIE

I’m an Adam fan too. I’ve seen, I think all of the U-Tube videos and I think he can sing a song without too much theatrics like in the song Is Anybody Listening, from the Ten Commandments. He’s got mega talent, stage presents, and great looks. I need to stop obsessing, if I can, as it’s only the Hollywood segments, but he had me from the audition. Taylor is the only other contestant that had me hooked from the audition on, the others took time. I find several others interesting so I have high hopes for this year.

  • cay

Adam has intrigued me too. I think he has tons of potential and talent and I can’t wait to see how he grows and learns to use that talent. I do agree that normally I wouldn’t be a fan, but there is something so incredibly appealing about him.

But, I am a fan of many of the guys. I don’t feel I’ve seen the girls enough to form an opinion. Except for Jackie and Tatiana and they were very obnoxious. However, I’m open at this point. I imagine I’ll have more favs next week, but Adam shot to the top for some reason. Wierd.

I have only voted for one Idol- David Archuleta, and I may not vote again, but I sure see the star quality in Adam. I’m going out on a limb here (J/K), but I think he will definitely be in the top few, if he keeps up what I have seen so far.

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

Very funny, GwendyolynD. Yeah, I can see Liza Minnelli and Adam Lambert together — backstage after Adam’s concert. Actually, I think in that picture he looks more like the young Robert Smith of the Cure — hence the Brandon Flower comparisons.

I see Adam as a completely masterful powerhouse — someone who can make his voice do whatever he wants. I expect that he will impress us with his subtlety when the occasion warrants.

There are others in the competition — Jeremy Michael Sarver, Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, and especially the Typhoonigator, aka Von Lee Smith — who have already exhibited tendencies to oversing without Adam’s vocal control. Amidst a shrill shouting contest, even Svengali Simon, who already must be mentally grooming Adam for superstardom, will scold him for being relentlessly loud and theatrical.

As excited as I am about Adam at this early stage, I can easily imagine growing more appreciative of the subtle talents of Stephen Fowler and Jesse Langseth.

  • jimmyboyd2

My View (at least my hope):

This is the year for fans like me, and that especially includes Adam and Von (and hopefully Danny). It’s finally the payoff for people like me who have stuck with this show despite all the ridiculous songs with one measly glory note at the end. Those are not complete, honest performances. They’re strategy choices.

This year, I believe we will see a few singers who let it all hang out. No minutely detailed game plans to weave through the competition on tiptoes for fear of losing.

Thank you, producers and judges, for giving these people a chance. Now don’t let me down, singers. Give me all you got. Forget the strategies and let me see the real you.

  • NOLA

Add me to that Anoop corner! Love, love, love him!

Adam can sing and he’s a fabulous performer; but he’s a Broadway performer.
Not my idea of Idol material. JMO

Besides, he’s too fluffy for me.

  • Lexus

Adam was my very favorite from his audition onward and I don’t think I’ll be wavering. Danny, Jamar and Anoop are right behind him though. Simon’s right -the guys are very strong this year and, unfortunately, over shadowing some really talented female singers like Lil and Meghan. I wish I could hear more of 16 year old Arianna.

I’m so sick of the drama though. It bothers me most because AI loses credibility each time it focuses so heavily on drama…..Wednesday night alone the first half of the show focused on Katrina, Nate, Rose, Nancy, Kristen and the dreaded Tatianna….folks we all know don’t stand a chance of taking this to the end. Why? Why? Why? What a waste of time. It’s after an episode like this that I completely understand why the naysayers are so adamant that the show is nothing but an embarrassing laughfest. Sadly, it hurts genuinely talented people like those in my first paragraph who truly have something to offer and are simply looking to AI as a forum to hitch onto a star.
