Nielsen fast overnight ratings from Marc Berman

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox, of course, dominated this first Tuesday of the February sweeps (does anyone know ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the February sweeps?) with a two-hour edition of American Idol at 25.24 million viewers and a 9.2 rating/24 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown:

American Idol (Fox)
8:00 p.m. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Viewers: 21.43 million, A18-49: 7.7/22
8:30 p.m. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Viewers: 25.82 million, A18-49: 9.4/25
9:00 p.m. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Viewers: 26.63 million, A18-49: 9.8/25
9:30 p.m. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Viewers: 27.07 million, A18-49: 10.1/25

As good as this is, one year earlier American Idol averaged a heftier 29.88 million viewers and an 11.0/28 in the demo. So, that is a loss of 4.64 million viewers and 16 percent in the demo.

Promises of Twists! and Turns! from the producers don’t seem to be helping the ratings…

Well there’s a shocker. I watch out of habit and loyalty and I find it exhausting, I can’t imagine that a casual viewer would put forth the effort.

  • Dr. Tracey

I’m not really surprised. This is the 8th season and people move on.

I don’t think this is that unusual for a rating dip, because the show is aging. But I know the producers are trying to keep the ratings high by creating new twists and turns, but so far it doesn’t seem to be working.

Also an MJ week might have deterred some of the red state folks from allowing their children to watch the show. Because the 9 PM time slot looks pretty good ratings wise.

However, another part of the rating fall could be that the viewers are not that invested in the show because of the new format. Last year was very exciting because we had the opportunity to see the cast members grow and flourish. The talent pool last year on the show exceeded my expectations and it was very exciting to watch the making of a star.

And either the producers are turning it into a different type of reality show. Or they are looking for an automatic recording artist. The show is still interesting to watch, but it lacks the luster of some of the most beautiful out shining moments that past contestants had.

This is just my opinion, I am not an expert, but I am a consumer.

Edit: I also enjoyed the MJ theme last night.

I wonder how much of this ratings drop is due to people seeing AI “differently” than before.
I mean it’s very easy to get the episodes on the internet and you don’t have any of the advertisements.
Moreover, when I see the amount of comments, buzz on the internet I don’t get the feeling that this is an unpopular season.

Could it be because this is turning into—

    SIMON”S IDOL??????

  • Victoria

I agree with Valentin… A lot of people watch on the internet. Yes, it’s the 8th season and ratings are bound to drop, but I know many people who watch online or record it to watch later.

Also an MJ week might have deterred some of the red state folks from allowing their children to watch the show.

I think I’m offended by this statement. What does having Idol contestants sing Michael Jackson songs have anything to do with red state/blue states?
Why would we red staters not allow our children to watch?

I am sorry that I offended you, so let me correct myself and say that very strict conservative folks find MJ offensive because of his past supposed indiscretions. There are still too many people who do not accept MJ in the US. This is very unfortunate, but true. He is iconic and deserves recognition for sharing his talent with world. There will never be another one like him.

There is a reason why MJ’s last concerts are in Europe.

And calling all red staters conservatives is far from the truth. In fact it is only a figure of speech and should not be taken literally.

  • NOLA

love, thank you for the clarification. I’m a strict conservative who adored Michael Jackson before he lost his freaking mind. I also happen to love his music.

  • lovegoodmusic

    NOLA:

I also happen to love his music.

I love his music too and MJ will always be one of my favorite artists. :smile2_tb:

All Idol needs to do is to put David Cook and David Archuleta on to see the ratings skyrocket. Jason Castro too. I’m sure Simon will never admit that the Davids were one of the best things that happened to that show and they are hard to top.

  • NOLA

Taylor is on Idol Tonight. He looks expensive. LOL

  • bean99

I doubt he believes that nor do I. I enjoyed last season as much as anyone but don’t think it’s just because of the Davids. There was a nice mix then just as there is this season.

  • jz

Idol is past its prime, simple as that.
But for a show in its eighth season, it’s still doing very well.

  • cmom

I like some of the people but have been very bored and hope that it gets better. Simon keeps trying to get people to tune into the next show(s) by saying something different is going to happen.
