RadarOnline reports that American Idol producers are now conducting focus groups to determine whether to bring back Paula Abdul to the show, and at what cost.

I’m beginning to believe that my original take on Paula’s twitter resignation as negotiating tactic–rather than closing the door on her Idol career–was correct. They called her bluff, but now the two sides, after a little time has passed, are re-considering their positions. Yes, Idol, those guest judges sure do suck, don’t they? And hey Paula, the big bad world outside the Idol bubble doesn’t seem so welcoming, does it…

There’s are quite a few convincing indicators out in the blogosphere that the negotiations between Paula and Idol, in some form or another, have resumed. Her talks with ABC appear to have broken down, presumably to sort out her situation with Idol. And former Idol producer, Nigel Lythgoe, in a recent interview with Access Hollywood, backpedals a little on his offer to Paula. It turns out, he never talked to her in Vegas, and says he’d like to convince her to begin renegotiating with Idol again. He claims to have no inside information. But, you know…yeah right.

Eh. In the end, Paula will come back. Drag it out for a few more weeks and there is your major story keeping Idol in the news for the summer. Now, TPTB will need to drum something up for the fall…

  • SarahP

totally agree with you MJ…i always got the feeling she’s gonna come back whether we like it or not (let’s see….)

Drag it out for a few more weeks and there is your major story keeping Idol in the news for the summer. Now, TPTB will need to drum something up for the fall’ ¦

mj, so true, and one might almost think it’s all been, oh, scripted.

The “Is she worth it?” storyline on Paula, timed well, with all the guest judging oomphing up fall and getting people who normally skip the “pre-season” try-outs to at least tune-in to see them for 10 minutes, would even help with the build-up. Then, like a high-priced pitcher on opening day about to demo his $20 million dollar arm, soon as they’re on the big stage, people tune in to see “was Paula worth it”.

If she’s got an ounce of sense she will be blindingly brilliant. New, smart, always wearing her shopping network jewelry and looking gorgeous. Never drunk. Just as full of heart. But keenly astute in her advice. The Most Valuable Judge. And NOT sit next to Simon. And choreographing as many sizzling numbers as possible. And making Randy & Kara sweat every time they start to ramble.

    YESsssssss I WANT PAULA BACK!!!!!!!!!!

  • mgm

Love Paula, but doesn’t much matter to me. I’ll only watch Idol when Adam makes a guest appearance.

  • cookcricket

    No, just no!!!

If she comes back can Jim Cantiello do another bit on the stages of acceptance?

  • IdolThoughts

I’m sure she’ll be back. It’s gonna happen people. Yes…Idol would go on. But, there’s no logical reason for Paula to leave. I’m sure there’s a monetary figure that suits both parties…its a matter of minutes.

When does Hollywood Week start? Because if she’s not back by then, I just can’t see her coming back at all. First, that’s when the judges do most of their work. What would be the basis for giving her a raise if she’s doing half the work she normally does? Second, as I’ve said before, it makes zero sense for her to come back during semi-finals if she’s never heard the contestants before. So it’s Hollywood Week or bust for Pauler.

  • abbysee

I hope you are right. Then I can take my black armband off. I’ve been in mourning since my Paula tweeted the news. Now they can both regain their sanity and get to work on a fair deal. These guest judges are fine, but so what. I want my Paula.

kind of like Brett Favre ….

Please, don’t bring her back. If you do, put a timer on the damn judge talking time. Sometimes I think Paula and Randy just ramble on to hear their own voices.

  • isitoveryet

tinawina You are not alone, believe me. May be some good will come out of this. Paula will stay sober (if she has gone off the wagon already) a cut back on the banter?

The big downside of this is that they’ll have to bring in another another annoying sponsor to pay for her increase… so now the Idols time will get sucked away more so than they have already. So we have Coke, AT&T, Ford… maybe we need a food sell… like McDs or hey how about a condom manufacturer to pull in the 20 year olds?

  • LisaE

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t really want her back. I was so ready for a change. Darn.

I thought a change might be okay until they lined up Joe Jonas and Victoria Beckham as guest judges. I pretty much hated the show before this season because, to me, it represented everything wrong with pop culture. I ignored that this year because I was an Adam/Allison fan and they weren’t your traditional idols. But, there may not be two people more representative of what I hate about pop culture than the Jonas Brothers and Victoria Beckham…so bring Paula and her crazed wackiness back! I’m already having a hard enough time trying to psych myself up to watch as it is…

  • tinawina

but she just tweeted and said

    PaulaAbdul
‘Dont believe everything that you read!!’

She might be talking about the part of that article where it said she was a diva that thought she was the most popular cast member, and felt she deserved to be paid more than Ryan and Simon.

  • Hazehel

I think it would be a big mistake by the show to take Paula back. The show is getting stale, the judges getting boring and repetitive, most of the time they are just sitting there going through the motion. Although I would have preferred Randy to be gone, Paula going is a chance to try something different, if it doesn’t work, bring her back in a year or two, she’ll still be free (as if such high-paying job for doing so little work is easy to come by).

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t really want her back.

You are not the only one. I really find everything she says to be worthless. Randy Jackson only knows about 10 words but at least he’ll commit to not liking a performance. Paula’s range is from love it to super love it to “you’re a super star.” And her pre-scribed words of wisdom from last season–so obvious an attempt to rehabilitate her reputation from the substance abuser rap she got during Season 7. She wasn’t trying to impart wisdom to the contestants; she was proving to us that she can use big words, in sentences.

    Rant over.

Oh, not quite over. She is so self absorbed. I am so tired of it being about her. . . and her rat dog.

So done with her. Please let Simon Fuller hire someone who has interest in mentoring others and doesn’t have a mirror on every surface of every room that person is in. Like Sheryl Crowe or Alanis Morrisette.

  • Suzanne

yes pleaseeee I want her back. she is a sweet kind hearted lady. please God make this happen.

  • Sherena

If they’re considering having her back after not budging in their offer and stating firmly that she won’t be back– making it very clear that they didn’t want her or need her– if they’re going back now, then something must be really off in the chemistry of the judges’ table without her.

She’s got a performer’s instinct and knows it when she sees something special. So what if she’s too nice– when she starts off praising the makeup and hair, I think we get the point– it’s bad.

Three judges is still best, so Randy needs to go soon. When the general reaction to a reality show character is “meh,” something’s wrong.

  • wand3rful

Ugh, why? Im tired of her and her negotiations. They only reason I was initially hesitant/sad was out of fear for change….she was the comfortable slipper. But I see now the show needs a boost, and she is a distracting, weak link. So I am at peace with her disappearing in QVC Land along with her beads and jewelry making kit.

  • wand3rful

I hope that Paula does come back, the show wouldn’t be the same without her.

I think that is my issue…..I want the show to change :( The show needs to change. Its becoming tired and too predictable.

  • SpenserJ

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t really want her back. I was so ready for a change. Darn.

I don’t want Paula back either. She’s annoying, and a drama queen, but mostly I don’t want her tantrum-y bad behavior rewarded.

I also like Kara. At least she has critiques to give that are relevant to the business at hand.

Totally agree — this is the main reason why I was fine with Paula leaving. I think it’s time to get some new people at the judging table. Would be happy to see Randy go, too.

  • Kirsten

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t really want her back. I was so ready for a change.

I’m yet another person who doesn’t want her back. I’ve come to terms with her quitting the show and am ready to move forward. Her judging is really all about her. She’s too much of a drama queen. It’s time for a different mix on the panel.

And most of all, I want less judging and more singing. I don’t want a repeat of the travisity of last year where they kept cutting songs so that the Four Horsemen of Bad Judging could prattle on for hours. Three judges seem more likely (though it doesn’t guarantee) to produce less judging. Plus, Simon will have to change his dynamic of acting like an 8 year old around Paula when he doesn’t want to judge somebody.

  • ptslittlecomment

So done with her. Please let Simon Fuller hire someone who has interest in mentoring others and doesn’t have a mirror on every surface of every room that person is in. Like Sheryl Crowe or Alanis Morrisette.

And will slap Simon silly if he tries to draw on her.

Well, so much for my non-violence stand :blush_tb:

  • bmms

You called it, MJ! I really hope that AI will see the immense loss without Paula. I’m glad that they are taking the focus groups into account. Kudos Paula. :clap_tb:

  • Matt

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t really want her back. I was so ready for a change. Darn.

Never, ever think you are alone on this.

If she comes back, then whatever. I wont make a huge deal out of it. But she really is a worthless judge when it comes to critiquing. Sure, the contestants getting the weekly metaphorical backrub from her is a nice deed, but I’d rather have somebody who acts like they know where they are half the time. Not to mention when she does give a technical critique, it seems so contrived; almost like she had been rehearsing it for hours beforehand.

What I think happened was Paula being infuriated and feeling a sense of entitlement when it comes to the contract. She told TPTB that she’s done and immediately twittered about it to get some people behind her.

Once the media buzz began to die down a bit and she went back home, she was like, oh shit…what am I going to do now? Which takes us to where we are now.

I think she’ll be back, unfortunately. Who ever made the comparison to Brett Favre is spot freaking on.

  • Sherena

If they’re willing to give Paula more money this time around, then her marketing ploy worked.

The producers have gotten the chance to see what the judging table is like without Paula. Apparently it isn’t good enough.

  • lostinidol

I’m yet another person who doesn’t want her back. I’ve come to terms with her quitting the show and am ready to move forward. Her judging is really all about her. She’s too much of a drama queen. It’s time for a different mix on the panel.

Add me to the list of people who wish Paula would fade into obscurity. I do think she is worthless as a judge and I still believe Idol could do better. My problem is more about Paula’s off the set antics, which range from embarrassing to distressing. Paula needs a stint in rehab and Oprah’s instruction about a gratitude journal.

But what I keep coming back to is that Idol will reportedly pay Simon $46 million per year and Ryan $15 million. Do we really think that Fox would balk at paying Paula $10 million, or a $6.5 million raise, if they really felt she was worth it? Furthermore, they have the addition of Kara so Idol has no fears of a big gaping hole at the table. If Paula is forced to back down in her demands, she will only become more embittered and more difficult to handle. So, I really find it hard to see what would be compelling Idol to sign Paula at this point. And finally, last year proved a disaster time-wise with these four judges. How are they going to fix this if they bring Paula back since she’s the worst when it comes to running the clock? I still think Paula is history.

  • wand3rful

ha, can we start an online petition…Just say no to drugs and Paula? Same difference ;)

  • OldHag

The reason I was once committed to keeping Paula was because I didn’t want them to keep Kara – but they are doing that anyway. I really want it back to three judges so we have more idol time and less judge time. So I guess I don’t want Paula back.

  • Tess

So Idol puts Posh at the judges table and then wonders where the chemistry is. You’ve got to be fuckin’ kidding me. They remove the most rambling, absurd musical dilettante off of the judges panel and then substitute the most wooden non charismatic person they can find and then they think Paula is an exceptional talent…Paula is definitely not the only one imbibing.

I really don’t give a damn about what they do on the judges panel anymore. The mute button is pretty big and easy to find on my remote so I’ll just continue to watch and enjoy the kids and make up my own mind. Besides, if TPTB want to spend their profits on poor little Miss Paula, so be it.

  • k4dc

    I’m so over Paula…

  • luvnlife

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere (or heard) Simon said he wouldn’t do the show w/out Paula & Randy. He signed, maybe part of his negotiation was that they bring Paula back. Consider, w/out a good foil (Paula), Simon ain’t havin fun. Besides, don’t they owe her? Remember the Paula stalker they teased her with, the wannabe Paula-stalker? The stalker killed herself. I remember reading Paula took it really hard and blamed Fox & TPTB for allowing her (the stalker) to audition knowing she was unbalanced.

  • OldHag

The mute button is pretty big and easy to find on my remote…

True. But I do have to point out that I will still have to watch them as they rattle and they will still be stealing time from the idols. More singing/less talking is what I want.

  • Sherena

I’ll just continue to watch and enjoy the kids and make up my own mind.

Good idea. If I watch the show on a regular basis next season, I’ll definitely be muting the judges’ comments and watching them later. Or maybe scribbling down my thoughts after each performance before watching the judges, because I don’t want to be skewed by what they say.

Remember the Paula stalker they teased her with, the wannabe Paula-stalker? The stalker killed herself.

Yeah, that was messed up. American Idol deals with so many mentally unstable people– they make good tv–that eventually something was going to happen. Too bad it had to be the Paula stalker. That must’ve been rough for her.

  • Cuddles

I agree that Randy needs to go…..I am so tired of him saying the “dope” stuff on tv….the word dope shouldn’t be used on that family show to describe a singer in a positive manner. My suggestion for a replacement for him….Smokey Robinson. I think Smokey did a great job mentoring the contestants.

Still don’t like Kara, don’t know if I ever will, but I will force myself to keep trying.

If you want to compare Paula’s off-air tantics with say like Simon’s or Ryan’s….well Ryan for instance is Mr. Wild Child in his free time….that stuff about him hanging out with Linsey Lohan til the wee morning hours discussing business, then landing up at Ryan’s place til like 6 am, totally disgusted me….then I have seen pics of him with questionable women…yeah, he’s an eligle bachelor, wealthier than a son-of-gun, but he should be more discrete with whom he is photographed with. Then you’ve got Simon, friendly with all his ex girlfriends through-out the years and a heavy chain-smoker. So the bottom line is, no-one is perfect…not myself, not the leads in that show…but the originals have a chemistry together, as goofy as it’s been thru-out the years. It’s hard to find a good chemistry…yeah they need to revamp the show a bit, but they could do it in other ways…like let’s see how the contestants sing Christmas music for instance. Stuff like that.

  • CaliforniaGirl

It’s hard to imagine Idol without Paula. She’s been there since Day-One and is part of the brand. Yes, she’s got her faults, but who among us doesn’t?

While I think she frequently sounds like she’s babbling on about nothing, and I wish she would just STFU already, she is most always supportive…and the idols all love her for that.

Bottom line: I would like to see her back.

“IF” she is invited back, I would hope that she gets off whatever meds she’s been on that make her sound brainless and incoherent (anyone see her on Larry King Live last May?). They also need to reel her in once she starts rambling.

Faults or not, she adds a certain something to the show that will be hard to replace if they let her go.

  • iluvai

I’m crossing my fingers for Paula.

  • honowoowoo

    bleh!

Come back Paula, you may be the only one that truely knows talent when you see it . Adam is perfect example, you got it right from the start, day one. Took the panel and some of America a while to see what was right in front of them. Adam you have showed them all, the concert stats, screaming crowds prove it,you are a true STAR !!!!. I am happy for you and your family.
