Richard Rushfield of the LA Times attended the American Idol Season 9 in Los Angeles Tuesday, where 11,000 hopefuls lined up at the Rosebowl in Pasadena for their shot at competing on the next Idol.

He interviewed kids as they walked out of the auditions, both the losers, and the lucky few who snagged a golden ticket to the next step–auditioning in front of the producers for a chance to sing in front of the judges. The second and third rounds will take place in July and August…

Videos after the JUMP…

Losers:

Winners:

  • Duke

Too bad we didnt get to hear any singing. I had a bad feeling about a few of those ppl, heh.

I don’t know if she made it, but I predict Simon really likes the girl in the top photo on the left. No matter how she sings.

  • tinawina

Looks like they are going back to the season 7 model: camera-ready folks only. Was it me, or was every single one of the people who made it through cute as a button? I wanted to pinch the cheeks of the black girl with the glasses.

I prefer the losers, they had more character.

Of the winners the girl with the violin was the only one to peak my interest, more due to the instrument than the girl I think.

Nah, Simon like them tanned and brunette.

So, do we know if Crying Girl made it through to the next round? I wasn’t sure if we had that info. I’m assuming even if she sucks, they have to get a video of her singing in front of the big AI backdrop – not just the cattle call.

  • Suzanne

Wow–look at yellow-belt girl at the top! They are so bold in LA. Where’s her bra? I mean, how does that even work?

Silicone sticks straight up without any need for a bra. So, that could be one option. Also – she’s young – and that cami might have a built in bra feature. Those are my two possible theories.

  • auntieaimee

One of those dudes that made it through looked vaguely Lambertarian.

It’s a simple strapless low-cut bra. I don’t see the mystery here sorry.

Actually, most of those that didn’t make it through look pretty cute to me too.

I think there are a lot random factors affecting their fate.

I think the Lambert-look wannabe is going to be one of the mocked TV auditions. You know they’re going to put at least one or two copycats on…

LOL! Yep, that’s what I was going to say. God that girl was the stuff of nightmares.

…That guy that said he wasn’t trying to imitate Adam with his look was soooo fibbing, lol. But even still, *not even close*, dude.

  • leome

I’d like to hear the girl with the hat who did The Scientist. But yeah, the losers seemed to be less bland than the winners.

I didn’t know they could play instruments at this phase. It would be fun to see someone playing the violin. I really enjoyed to see that Kid who won the eurovision singing and playing it.

Is it orange? Looks like there could be something orange under there.

  • iluvai

I don’t understand “we’re not looking for country”, “we’re not looking for R&B”???? I thought it was all about the voice at least initially.

  • rheyow

what does it mean “Second and third rounds will take place in august?” second and third rounds, you mean hollywood rounds?

  • SarahP

i posted this in another thread but since the question is asked, i’ll copy paste below

i saw this interview with this guy who went to the chicago auditions and he said that normally for the first round its the junior producers, then middle level producers and then you get to sing in front of the big producers so last yr it was nigel lythgoe.

so probably you need to advance around 3 or 4 rounds before you get to the judges. i remember kris mentioned his brother got through 4 rounds but didnt make it to the judges.
