American Idol, Glee Set Season Finale Dates (Schedule)

FOX just sent out a press release that answers the questions I posed in this post announcing the SYTYCD premiere. Yes, So You Think You Can Dance will air on TUESDAYS beginning May 14.

The American Idol finale will air in two parts, on Wednesday May 15 and Thursday May 16.  A Top 10 would have the series ending the week before, so Nigel has SOMETHING up his sleeve–either a wildcard or an Idol special like Idol Gives Back.

And as I previously mentioned, Glee will wrap up Season 4 on Thursday May 9.

So that means there is an extra week in the schedule for Idol to get from 10 to 1? Seems to support a top 11 or 12?

  • ht23

Maybe there will be a save and no double elimination?

  • http://twitter.com/eric_ascher Eric Ascher

I actually was wondering about what that could mean, but ht23 I think you nailed it.

  • inmyslumber

The only confusing part of this is that next’s week results show is 90 minutes. If there’s no wildcards, why do we need that long to reveal 10 finalists?

  • tigervixxxen

Why would Idol end one week prior to the end of sweeps? Idol ALWAYS end on Wednesday the last week of sweeps. Why would they put in a program the following week that would bring in less ratings?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1818332757 Seth McHale

I can’t figure out why Fox is ending everything so dang early. There is over 4 months of no new programming for them. Unless they bring everything back at the end of August. I know a lot of shows cut back from 24 episodes to 22 this year to cut costs. Hopefully, there is some good summer programming on and the long summer wait is worth it.

  • maymirabella

I think a wildcard show is coming and then we get a wgwg wildcard for the six in a row winner, lol, just kidding but I still worry a girl can never win this show. And since I like the top 20 then top 10, well too good to be true. I bet Nigel will have Top 24 then top 12,just like always

  • maymirabella

I agree Andrew. I bet there will be top 12 via a wildcard.

  • tigervixxxen

Masterchef gets 6 million viewers. Why would FOX prefer to air that show final night of sweeps and not Idol. Why am I not comprehending this?

  • Kirsten

Why would Idol end one week prior to the end of sweeps?

Sweeps ends on a Wednesday, so if they end it the last week, they have to move the show to Tuesday/Wednesday night (from Wednesday/Thursday) Lots of viewers get confused. Maybe they don’t want to go head-to-head with the Voice?

  • tigervixxxen

Yeah but that’s what they do every year, have finale week Tues/Wed. So that’s what FOX is going to do, roll out an inferior show on final night of sweeps? Makes no logical sense to me.

  • Anny_nanny

“The American Idol finale will air in two parts, on
Wednesday May 15 and Thursday May 16.  A Top 10 would have the series
ending the week before, so Nigel has SOMETHING up his sleeve–either a
wildcard or an Idol special like Idol Gives Back.”

For me it is strange that Phillip on these dates has four shows in Ohio. Teleportation not yet invented, the AI in this year will hold a final without a past winner. I think it’s for the best.

  • elliegrll

Good point.   Last year’s final two performance show only drew 14 million people.  Season 10 the ratings for the final two dropped a little bit in comparison to the ratings for the top 3.  For the past two years the drop may have been okay, but they probably didn’t want to take a chance this season.

  • elliegrll

Advertisers really don’t put a lot of emphasis on sweeps anymore, and it is better for AI to keep the same schedule.  During the past two years switching the nights has been about bragging rights more than anything else.

  • elliegrll

He can always perform via satellite from his concerts.  It would actually be good publicity to get the message out to a mass audience that he is performing in front of a large paying and receptive audience.

  • tigervixxxen

But it’s not one week vs another week. It’s giving up an entire 3 hours of programming during a week where they’d get around 20 mil viewers. If FOX could put on grass growing and get 20 mil they’d do it.

P2 could always pretape. I’d guess that before performing via satellite. Or maybe they won’t have him on at all.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IDXVM7NCMXZVHX4M2RFBYOTYDA Robert

I think that is exactly what it will be.

  • Anny_nanny

Phillip could send “hi” the pigeon-mail, it would be even funny I have no doubt. They can hang sensor on the pigeon and monitor the movement on the electronic card in the Internet.
I don’t care whether P2 will performing in the finals, but in the past year, the entire Top-10 S10 was in the hall, and Scotty handed over a prize. I thought it will be traditionally.
While I do not understand what is happening. Tour of Phillip ends 05/17, he ends intensively – 6 concerts in 5 days. I was sure that they exempt dates so that he could return to LA and producers could milk the history of “our successful champion passes on the baton to his successor”. I understand that it is less interesting for PP.

For me it is strange that Phillip on these dates has four shows in Ohio.
Teleportation not yet invented, the AI in this year will hold a final
    without a past winner.

Phil is singing the boot song so he would be scheduled to perform the night before the finale just as Scotty did last year (final performance night instead of finale). Scotty, Lee and Fantasia have all not performed on the finale (results night). Fantasia wasn’t there (she had a concert elsewhere), Scotty handed out the winner’s trophy and Lee glowered from the audience.

They can film the boot song singing anytime. Although, strangely, he will have to perform the boot song when he appears in March because that is also his single. So, maybe they will abandon the tradition of singing the boot song on the final performance night. IDK. Anyway they can pre-record.

But, more likely, they will just cancel some of those shows in Idaho now that the dates have been announced. Going on to Idol is WAY more exposure than playing in any concert. The math is easy. Rabid fans who will be sad that they won’t see Phil will be over-the-moon that he is going on TV and will completely forgive him. If it is his concert, they will reschedule. If he is just an opener, his fans can scalp their tickets.

  • Anny_nanny

     LOL Why Idaho?
    All can be, but:
15 Wed 7:30 pm The Pullo Center York, PA
16 Thu 7:30 pm Clark State Performing Arts Center Springfield, OH
16 Thu 7:30 pm Clark State Community College Springfield, OH
17 Fri 12:00 am Ohio State at Newark Newark, OH
17 Fri 8:00 pm Midland Theatre Newark, OH

I don’t know who planned the schedule, but I understand that plans Phillip take into account the schedule. I hope only that the sale of tickets not yet begun and these shows can be moved to another day.

  • Kirsten

    LOL Why Idaho?

LOL. IDK. They both start with a vowel and end in an “O”? Quick, say Iowa, Idaho and Ohio 10 times real fast.

I don’t know who planned the schedule, but I understand that plans Phillip take into account the schedule.

Well, FOX isn’t going to care what P2’s schedule is. They are going to schedule their finale’s in response to their own financial plans. If he wants to  be on the show, he will have to cancel one of the concerts or pre-tape.

  • Anny_nanny

Is you really believe that he wants to be on the show?
I hope he will relinquish this slot to Joshua, for example. And they all will be happy.

  • Miz

If they want to have Phillip sing the boot song again for the finale they can just replay the tape from his first performance. It doesn’t make sense for him to perform it twice anyway.

  • cheese1

Idol isn’t exactly sticking to its script this year, I think they will just drop the boot song performance from Top 2 night.

  • jpfan2

I think a tape of P2 doing GGG would be fine. So I guess the whole old winner giving trophy to new winner thing is over. It was kind of awkward anyway. By the time the new winner is announced about 95% of the audience has completely forgotten the previous season!
