A press release from FOX announces next week’s finale, featuring Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips.. Joshua Ledet was eliminated tonight.

Scotty McCreery and Rihanna will make appearances (So will Aerosmith, per Joe Perry, but FOX isn’t ready to announce that yet.)

Reports from the Idol studio have Phillip Phillips winning the coin toss to determine next week’s performance order. Phillip chose to go second.

Also the first dates of the American Idol 12 auditions begin in Los Angeles California on June 7. Read the press release below for more information:

Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez are AMERICAN IDOL’s Top Two finalists. After a season-high of nearly 90 million votes, host Ryan Seacrest announced that Joshua Ledet received the fewest number of votes and was eliminated from the competition.

“I’m just a normal guy who loves to play music,” said Phillips. “I just happened to get lucky and I’m so blessed by it. I’m so excited.”

“Being in the position I’m in now is more than I could have ever asked for,” added Sanchez. “I’ve been looking forward to auditioning for AMERICAN IDOL ever since the first season. And now, the first season that I’m eligible, I’ve made it to the Top Two! It’s crazy what you can do when you put your mind and heart to it! I don’t know what could be better than this.”

Next week’s final performance show promises to be a night to remember as Phillip and Jessica battle it out at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE Tuesday, May 22 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.

Tune in the following night for the biggest television event of the season and the momentous Season 11 grand finale on Wednesday, May 23 (8:00-10:07 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed). The finale will feature special performances by superstar Rihanna, Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery and other surprise guests, as well as a Top 12 reunion before America’s vote is revealed.

Audition cities and dates for AMERICAN IDOL Season 12 include Los Angeles, CA, on Thursday, June 7; Newark, NJ, on Saturday, June 23; and Chicago, IL, on Thursday, July 12. Additional cities, dates and details will be announced on www.americanidol.com.

Interscope doesn’t do “coronation” singles.  Based on last year it gives each finalist a single that they record and market as such.  I am sure the “singles” have been in the works since the Top 10 were chosen with the crews at Interscope searching through their submittal archives to find something for each of the 10 so that they would have something for the finals.

    Scotty McCreery
Album Sales: 1,107,000 Track Sales: 1,281,000 Radio Plays: 76,000 YouTube Plays: 13,313,012
The tenth season victor is one of the most successful “Idol” contestants in recent years, with his debut “Clear as Day” already achieving Platinum status by the RIAA — and Scotty the first “Idol” to pull off the achievement with a debut since David Cook. The deep-voiced teen has placed two singles on the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts (“I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble With Girls”), and is currently touring alongside Brad Paisley and The Band Perry this winter. McCreery may be remembered as the winner who saved “Idol,” returning the show to prominence after its two previous winners fizzled in popularity. Not even a year in, and he’s already at No. 15 on our list — that should tell you something from the get-go.

I found this article at Billboard and these stats are correct as of Jan 21 2112. So while some folks are not Scotty fans, his success can not be denied.

I’m neither gay nor tween!  I love Country music, and Scotty has the best country voice in years.  Love his classic country baratone!  Why do we have to criticize a genre different from our favorite?  Doesn’t make sense.

I think that one, heartfelt ballad each would be more than enough to show versatility and the ability to sing with emotion, but otherwise I agree that more uptempo songs would be best for the other two choices.

While I’m glad that Scotty’s found success I can’t help, but be annoyed at this statement: “McCreery may be remembered as the winner who saved Idol, returning the show to prominence after its two previous winners fizzled in popularity…”

There’s no reason for Kris and Lee to be accused of killing or almost killing Idol. Yeah. I know that their debuts didn’t go platinum or even gold, but still. :/

ETA. This is in reply to siouxl.

I saw a post my husband made about Lisa Marie Presley’s Idol visit: I have been traveling for work so I didn’t get to watch it with him.    It said:  ”No matter who her Daddy is, Lisa Marie Presley still can’t sing.”  LOL.

Lisa Marie missed the sperm with the talent in it.

    So uncalled for.

Considering how much praise Phillip has received, I think that either he is an excellent song writer, or he is the fall guy, the ideal runner-up who can be easily stitched up in the final because he doesn’t have the best voice.

Not sure which one, but we’ll know next week.

These were not my words…It was taken in context from an article on Billboard site. I never started watching Idol till last season. So this is a subject I cannot or will not comment on…My point was that while everyone is entitled their own opinion, people who for what ever reason thought that Scotty was/is undeserving of winning, he has certainly found some sucess.

The comments of “sub-par, mediocre and inferior performances”, are again, merely opinions, right?  This is not my opinion and I’m not a young, white, female teeny bopper….I’m not even voting.  Instead, I’m from Stevie Nick’s generation and I’m moved by Phillip, just as she and many others are, and have been since his audition.  His passion and musicality are undeniable…imo.  Bruce, Van, Dylan nor Janis’ voices are like Joshua or Jessica, but their songs, passion and musicality are history making.  Joshua and Jessica are superb singers, no question, and will go on to make great records, and so will Phillip…just a different kind, that’s all.

    I know that. :P

All I’m saying is that what Billboard said about Scotty “saving Idol” annoyed me. If anyone attempted to destroy Idol it was Simon. Not Lee, and definitely not Kris. Kris was one of the main reasons why his season was as good as it was.(Since you haven’t seen AI8 then you should really check out some AI8 performance clips on YouTube if you can find any. You won’t regret it.)He may not have done as well as Adam did, but his debut single did go platinum and that’s better than nothing. Lee’s a different situation entirely. I won’t go into discussing him because the man has been criticized and hated on enough as it is.

I agree. Scotty was a very deserving winner, and I’m happy that his career is off to a good start. :)

“Scotty McCreery and Rihanna will make appearances”

    SCOTTY!!!
Now, that, definitely got me excited about watching the finale!

My favorite has only won 2 or 3 times and I still watch. If my favorite doesn’t win, I just move on to the next season.

I agree, and this years drop in ratings have nothing to do with Scotty winning. It’s called singing competition fatigue, and idol didn’t revamp anything this season. Keeping the judging panel fresh every year is something that would help the ratings IMO.

I hope she can pull it off, I don’t think I can take another year of “Only wgwg can win now!!!”

I like Jessica and Philip, not their voices nor their music, but they come across as nice persons and I wish them well. Not invested, but this finale has  now caught my interest, mainly to see Scotty, but also to see who´ll win this season.
Even though I don´t favour one to the other, I think I´d prefer Jessica to win.  It would look better with a girl winning for a change and it might also be in PP´s interest. As a winner he would most likely have to deal with a lot of  negativity and stress while he ´d be better off as a runner up. Oh, and on a personal level I for one would not miss the wgwg argument then
