Hey guess what! People magazine has sources at American Idol too. They also report that the Nicki Minaj/Mariah Carey relationship never got off on the right foot:

“Mariah has been saying little things to jab at Nicki from day one of shooting,” an Idol source tells PEOPLE. “Mariah doesn’t think Nicki can sing and doesn’t think she should be judging folks. Nicki has been taking all of the jabs, but on this particular day she lost it.”

There are those who insist that Mariah did not provoke Nicki. But the pink haired rapper was upset about something, as she stormed off the set earlier in the day.

“There was a contestant who liked opera, and Mariah was talking to her as a pop singer who also liked opera,” says one insider. “Nicki cut her off and slammed her fist on the table. Mariah may have been going on a bit too long but she did apologize. But then Nicki flipped out and started yelling.”

As for who leaked the damning video:

“On the day of the fight production staff were the only people in the room,” says the Idol source.

Right. Nigel Lythgoe.

Are heads going to roll? Maybe Nicki’s

Now that the catfight is out of the bag, “they are talking about firing Nicki. That is still up for debate. They are worried about how she will act during the live shows.”

The crew is in Baton Rouge, LA auditioning hopefuls today. The feud has subsided, for now.

“There was a photo shoot [Thursday] with all the judges and Ryan [Seacrest], and everybody showed up and it went smoothly,” a source close to production tells PEOPLE. “Everyone is looking forward to another full day of judging in Baton Rouge on Friday – and to moving forward.”

Nicki is a thirty year old woman who is being paid 12 million dollars for a few months of half work weeks. If she can’t figure out how to give a more mature and controlled response to either real or perceived criticism, she doesn’t belong on a show like Idol.

Mariah Carey is a forty-two year old woman who is being paid 18 million for the same thing. If she can’t figure out how to act maturely and not snipe at her collegues on the panel when she’s supposed to be doing her job, she doesn’t belong on a show like Idol either.

I fully understand why people don’t want big outbursts from judges, but what I don’t understand is why chronic undermining of one’s peers is considered okay and not disqualifying. As eilonwy pointed out, that kind of attitude is the more likely of the two to be directed at the contestants.

Either they both deserve to go, or neither of them do.

And in my opinion, Lythgoe should be fired before either of them. It’s his job to keep the show running. He didn’t do it.

I was looking forward to the next season of Idol til they started all this crap.  I find “cat fights” and the promotion of them demeaning to women.  Stop it Nigel or I won’t watch.
