One other thing I want to comment on, the “Boot Video”. Near the end of Part II of her interview, they showed a tape of “Amanda’s Journey” which was great. It showed the highlights of her time on the show including some of her best performances.

That’s what I think the official “Boot Video” should be. I loved how “Bad Day” worked as a boot song, but I think it’s difficult to repeat that kind of success. And I know that it lends continuity to the show to always have the same song, but I want to hear the booted individual at their best. I always think that it kind of sucks that the last impression that these kids leave on the show is singing a song that public didn’t like enough to keep them on the show. I realize that it would be difficult for the singer and the band to suddenly have to perform a song they had done weeks before, so the “trainwreck” is what they must perform.

That’s why I think that the official boot video should be constructed using the songs that the contestant sang. It seems more respectful, it reminds us of why we liked the person in the first place and it’s more fun. It seemed really weird watching Amanda “rock it” while a sappy R&B ballad played over her. A big disconnect.

I was able to catch an episode of Australian Idol once and they have extremely long boot videos (I’d rather have that as filler than the stupid audience questions). They feature the Idol performing, so I don’t know why AI cannot.
