Like David Cook before her, Carrie Underwood is featured in a FOX commercial promoting Season 8 of American Idol, premiering on January 13.

The structure is very similar to the Cook commercial–As Carrie accepts a CMA for Female Vocalist of the Year, the film rewinds back to her audition, and Simon predicting “…you will sell more records than any other Idol winner.” Her song, “Just a Dream” is the backdrop.

Check it out:

I’s a good commercial. It’s just that the same structure makes it a retread of Cookie’s rather than a new execution of the concept…and that isn’t befitting of an Idol like Carrie.

  • hardkandy

I’m so not a Carrie fan but that commercial is great. She has a lot of success now and that commercial really shows what AI can do for someone if you have the right mix of talent, charm and luck. The editing was really good too coz they were able to let it come full circle in 45 seconds from her audition up to when she was singing at the CMAs recently.

I think they should’ve played that commercial around audition time, I think that would’ve motivated a lot more people to audition coz of the success Carrie has now.

  • Trina

Oh geez. Like DC’s that commercial has me all teary eyed. Carrie really is the perfect example of the kind of superstar AI CAN discover.

  • serenade

That’s a nice commercial and since she continues to have enormous success, it’s well deserved for her. She really is the absolute proof of America getting it right without the show pulling all kinds of stunts to sway their vote.

Simon made an uncanny prediction there. But has it really been Carrie who’s sold the most records or Kelly?

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Simon made an uncanny prediction there. But has it really been Carrie whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sold the most records or Kelly?

I think Kelly has still sold the most overall, including international sales. But, I think considering just US sales, Carrie has sold more. And of course, she has the best selling album of any winner and/or finalist with “Some Hearts.”

It was a great commercial. Made me all teary-eyed too.

  • Kirsten

But has it really been Carrie whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sold the most records or Kelly?

Here are the numbers from Ken Barnes on the 17th:

    Carrie Underwood à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Some Heartsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Total: 6.63M
    Carrie Underwood à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Carnival Rideà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Total: 2,516,976 (53)
    Total: 9.15M

    Kelly Clarkson à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Thankfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 500 (lw 400) Total: 2.71M
    Kelly Clarkson à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Breakawayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 1.4K (lw 1.2K) Total: 6.03M
    Kelly Clarkson à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Decemberà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 700 (lw 500) Total: 780K
    Total: 9.52M

So, for now, Kelly has the lead. If you just consider the first two albums, Carrie has the lead. Carrie is gaining on Kelly, but Kelly will soon have a new album.

  • SallyinIllinois

Good commercial and she is the best selling AI….Simon got that right.

  • itsalleternal

Once Carrie gets a third album out, she will almost certainly surpass Kelly.

  • Jolene

So, for now, Kelly has the lead.

So, Simon didn’t get it right. At least not for now. Maybe ultimately.

Anyway, great commercial, of course I liked DC’s better because I’m more invested in his story and because it had something more haunting about it (maybe it’s the backwards LO intro), but they’re both great commercials and serving AI well.

PS – someone said there’s an AI commercial showing all previous winners. Has anyone seen it? I somehoe find it hard to believe they’d ever use Taylor in an AI commercial, after the way they’ve been trying to sweep his win under the rug.

  • abbysee

Taylor in an AI commercial, after the way theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been trying to sweep his win under the rug.

His story will be told in voice over, very quickly, possibly by DAUGHTRY, lol.

  • terps

All I can say is there better be a Kelly commercial, she is the reason this show stayed around for so long

  • gabygal

So, for now, Kelly has the lead. If you just consider the first two albums, Carrie has the lead. Carrie is gaining on Kelly, but Kelly will soon have a new album.

so since kelly basically has 4 years on carrie, she will pretty much always be an album up on her

but measuring sales per album, with choosing kelly’s two best selling vs. carrie

carrie is definetly the best selling

we will see if carrie’s 3rd album can push her over the top definitively

  • http://www.david-cook.co.cc/index.php jstxanothrxstory

She hasn’t sold the most records, though. Kelly has.

  • cochem

    thanks to Skeeter226… all 7 AI’s

    thanks to Skeeter226à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ all 7 AIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s

Hell just froze over. AI acknowledged Taylor Hicks.

Thanks for the commercial. I only ever saw one of these auditions in real time. I think this whole “look at who we already discovered, you could be next” vibe is really effective and cool.

  • SashaB

But Carrie is managed by Simon Fuller, and Kelly is not. Fuller is 19Alphabet, so I could see why he’d feature Carrie over Kelly, just as he chose DC as well. DC and Carrie are both with Fuller; one the benefits of being managed by Fuller, I guess. Makes sense to put two very popular Idol winners in the first series of commericals, DC because he just won and Carre because she’s Carrie Underwood. Who knows? maybe they’ll be featuring other AI winners like Kelly and Jordin before AI8 begins or not. We saw the article with the FOX representative mentioning DC’s commercial which aired over Thanksgiving weekend, but I don’t recall reading about Carrie’s commercial, so who knows?

  • windmills

It’s a very nice commercial but I feel like it’d be even more meaningful if they showed Carrie being invited to join the Opry by Randy Travis or being inducted into the Opry by Garth Brooks. I’m glad they used that performance of Carrie’s though because it was really poignant and showed how far she’s come.

  • MagazineFreak

That’s a nice commercial, but I like Cook’s much more. Primarily because he filmed the commercial, while Carrie’s is just footage from the awards show and Idol. Not dissing Carrie by any means, but his is just more special to me.

Full disclosure: I’m a major Cooktard, but I like Carrie just fine and all.

  • Trina

Maybe since Taylor even said he’s slated to be back on AI this upcoming season combined with these recent commercials, maybe they want to put some focus back on the importance of winning.

  • sunchick

maybe they want to put some focus back on the importance of winning.

*ding* I think that’s exactly what they’re trying to do. The whole “you don’t have to win,” or, worse, “it’s better not to win” vibe that sprung from Daughtry’s success really puts a damper on the idea of the fairy tale ending.

  • cheese

I don’t “get” Carrie, so all this did was remind me how much I didn’t like her on the show. However, she’s definitely the biggest and brightest Idol star of the moment, so it was definitely a good idea on the part of TPTB.

  • elisad

Hey I said that, the next one would be Carrie~

She hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sold the most records, though. Kelly has.

I’m pretty sure it goes like this: Kelly has sold more worldwide, but carrie has sold more in the US. either way- they are both the two most successful (j-hud being a close 3 imo, followed by daughtry)

  • FolkFan

It was a good commercial, but I suspect that it would have been more effective if they’d restructured it, especially as they didn’t have the specially filmed footage like they used with DC. Maybe start with the audition, then move forward from there.

  • bluejeans

That is a really good commercial. I felt…inspired. I didn’t like Carrie on Idol. Yes, I found her boring and robotic. Still find her incredibly bland and she doesn’t do it for me musically but good that she found success.

  • hardkandy

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m pretty sure it goes like this: Kelly has sold more worldwide, but carrie has sold more in the US. either way- they are both the two most successful (j-hud being a close 3 imo, followed by daughtry)

I think in the US, Kelly still has sold more cumulatively. But she has 3 albums and Carrie only has 2, at the moment. Carrie has the biggest AI album with Some Hearts though.

  • sidewalk

Maybe since Taylor even said heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s slated to be back on AI this upcoming season combined with these recent commercials, maybe they want to put some focus back on the importance of winning.

I definitely think that’s what they’re trying to set up with these commercials. While I’m sure AI loves making $$$ off Daughtry and Archie and JHud, if winning isn’t important then the show definitely loses some purpose. They want the audience to care who wins…it’s almost like they’ve created their own enemy in the successful non winners.

  • SashaB

I think “enemies” is a slight overstatement. I don’t think AI views successful AI alums or non AI winners as enemies at all as they are all part of the AI family or portfolio of products. Sure, it would have been better for the AI brand if all the winners could have been as successful as Kelly or Carrie, but it also shows how realistic AI is vis a vis the music world. Good product, good sales. Bad product, well, Taylor Hicks’ sales. But I think the success of JHud, Daughtry and Clay add to the overall luster of the AI brand. It’s good to have successful idols because it means the show produces talent, and at the end of the day, there can only be 1 winner per season. But you don’t want the entire season invalidated because there was only 1 winner – because that doesn’t mean there was only 1 talented singer. AI is a launching pad for talent into the music, film, entertainment industry and clearly a force to be recognized. It’s better, IMO, for people to see other AI alums rather than just think of those terrible audition peeps like Renaldo or William Hung. So it all works out.

The fact that they are highlighting the AI winners, DC and Carrie, emphasizes the benefits of winning, because that is the goal of the show. The other bi-product stars is gravy for the show.

  • poporange

They do have a commercial with Taylor Hicks in it .It shows Carrie U, Taylor,Jordan and then Daivd C before the judges.
Get through the BS American Idol gets thier name out thier but it is the artists and good promo . It also helps allot by Fitting a genire like a glove, singing good and having a bit good looks. Case in point how some AI contestants have good numbers in first cd then the second goes down possibly AI shine has deminished somewhat their on thier own ..Comsumers who like Carrie U and Kellie C music would not touch the show with a ten foot pole.
Remember it is a “reality Show” first and formost for entertainment..

Thier is and will always be a stigma for being on idol from some in the business because the artist has to gain respect despite being on a “relaity show” Brooke would say just ridculous the smashing or whos better than who..none of these will be the next beatles/Rolling stones .(imo pathitic)

  • Lu

Not a Carrie fan – at all – but this is a nice commercial. The vid for that Just A Dream song is really powerful – wow.

I wonder if they’re going to make those ads like Cook’s and Carrie’s for all the winners?

  • poporange

Never write having the norwic virus(gastro flu) or ticked off ya make no sence lesson learned. Lamens terms the blog above the Quenessential AI contestant fit the “pop” section like a glove, have the “look “in other words Pr dream come true. (not rocking the boat helps) If they fit or semi fit AI/label will pimp them but it is up to the artist to make it after words.. I dislike about AI is the false standards they have about success fullfilling success to most is making a living at doing what ya like. Apologize about rant above never be perfect .

LU- American Idol is about the show getting allot of mula mostly through advertisment which the higher the ratings the better for AI.. If commercails w/ Carrie U, Daivid C or even cute puppies bring more viewers thier will be more bet on it.

  • Jae

Not a bad commercial but it does not have the impact of DC’s.

  • gingerly

I like actually all the winners. I think they are all awesome and all extremely talented. Probably Jordin was my least favorite winner because she didn’t show me on the show what she could accomplish. That may be more my failing than hers, because she certainly showed me afterwards. That it’s not music I could ever embrace means diddly to me. She’s certainly proven herself. I think truly all the winners have. They have proven themselves in their respective genres. So it’s all good for me. I’d have to say that the DC commercial was much more arresting and memoriable than the CU commercial. I would stack it up to been there, done that or in other words you can’t go there again. While Carrie Underwood is awesome, she’s not so very awesome doing a rehashed commercial.
