Entertainment Weekly files their own report on the judges rumors.

First, Simon Fuller gave them a statement:

“There will be several positive announcements to follow shortly,” Fuller told EW in a statement. “American Idol is moving up a gear and with the help and commitment from Fox, who are more intimately involved and supportive this season than ever before, we are looking forward to a dynamic new season ahead.”

EW independently confirmed:

  • Randy Jackson won’t be leaving American Idol, but he won’t likely be a judge either. Unless HE decides to leave, or negotiations with potential judges fall apart, he will move into a mentor like role.  Fox and producers would like to make a judges panel clean-sweep for the 2013 season.
  • Nicki Minaj is  near a deal to join the show as a judge.
  • The third spot,  is most likely going to country music star Keith Urban.
  • If “Fox and producers decide to go full throttle, for a fourth spot” it will be  is Spanish singer-songerwriter Enrique Iglesias.   Hanging in there with an outside chance, Idol veteran Adam Lambert ”is still in the mix.”

I heard a rumor that the judges rounds would begin around September 22. If that’s true, I would expect a press conference during premiere week, beginning September 12. But, it could be sooner.

I really hope Adam is still being considered. That’s a dream.  :) I would love to see his critiques.  I think his comments would be so interesting.

I suppose Idol will wait until after the Democratic Convention ends before making the announcement?  I’d love to see a surprise announcement of someone never mentioned.

FYI – SYTYCD kept me by bringing back popular contestants. I know their ratings are dropping but it has been a contributor to their success over the years imho. Their other big success has been having dancers and choreographers (who are branched out dancers) as judges. I loved it when Nigel put on his tap shoes for one of the finales.

Another thing the SYTYCD judging panel does: they ”teach” the audience about dance by making very precise references to what worked and what didn’t in the routines and they comment on the dance sources. I have actually learned a lot about dance over the years.

Virtually none of their winners go on to fame in a very big way, though we definitely see some of them transitioning to Dancing with the Stars and going out on tour with Gaga and Madonna etc.

That doesn’t negate the fact that they bring alot to the show when they return.

This is what concerns me. It is completely conceivable that Mariah and Nicki will be “impress me” judges ( a little bit of handing down judgment from “on high”.) Keith is more likely to be into the show and the contestants but he’s kind of laid back.

There has to be a cheerleader on this panel. I don’t see one at the moment. No one with that energetic enthusiasm for the whole shebang. No one absolutely digging it and digging the contestants.

J-Lo may not have been an incisive judge but she was really into the contestants – I thought she was going to cry sometimes. Paula was into the contestants.

Who of the people mentioned so far is  going to provide that energy? I don’t see it.

I’ve been watching Enrique interviews (been doing this with all the candidates) and it strikes me that he always makes the interviewer come to him; he never steps forward for the interview. That is his nature. If he approaches Idol the same way, it will be a shame. I hope news of his reluctance is about angling for more money and not ambivalence about the gig.

    No Lambert, please…..!!!!

Lambert is a bit too honest to be a cheerleader… but I think he may be a great pacifier when he sits between the two diva’s…
