American Idol Alum Syesha Mercado Covers “Skyfall” (VIDEO)

Remember Season 7 American Idol finalist Syesha Mercado? She kept that bottom 3 stool warm for several weeks, but then managed to break out and finish in third place behind the Davids–Archuleta and Cook.

Since Idol, she’s done a lot of theater, and now she’s even trying her hand at fashion design, which the signer explains after her lovely cover of Adele’s Bond theme, “Skyfall”. Syesha hits some pretty amazing notes–feats she didn’t even try on the Idol stage! It’s pretty impressive.

Check it out.

Wow. That was pretty incredible, and those notes at the end were insane! I always thought she was terrific on American Idol, but she’s even better than I remember!

  • Larc

Fantastic!!!  I like the haunting sound of this.  Amazing that Syesha can hit those very high notes and stay on key when she does it.  Wish she had sung something like this back in S7.

  • Reginald

I have been one of her biggest fans since I first saw her on Idol and I can’t tell you how proud I am to have stood by her side all these years. Her talent is UNEBLIEVABLE…like Holy Crap! I was Blown Away with Chills and tears. Favorite Idol ever right there!

Why is Syesha like way better than I remember her being?  This is dang impressive.  To be fair though I always thought she was good on the show, just boring.  Also I was wrapped up in Jasonmania at the time.  Ha.  Either way I love seeing my S7 idols kicking ass.  Still my favorite season.

  • jlscott13

Agreed. That tends to happen after the show. Experience can do a lot to a person. The reason why I love this so much is she’s not over-singing the entire song, as she tended to do on the show most of the time.

  • alain arias

really beautifull voice… nice cover… that was the best season ever

  • Incipit

she’s not over-singing the entire song,

Very nice, indeed. I agree, experience shows. Syesha has the dynamics and phrasing here that she didn’t quite know how to use during Season7 – her vocals are more polished, but she always had the talent, and the range. IMO.
Still my favorite Idol season too.

Really terrific vocal – almost made me like the song.

  • Li Wright

I always thought she was better than 3rd, and wished her well.  I don’t think she’s found her “spot” in the business. Like the blond. Very becoming.

  • Tammy Luebrecht

Oh my holy crap!!!! Syesha has got it all going on.

  • abbysee

I was that one Syesha fan that many alluded to during her season. Lol. She was always really good just ran into the juggernaut that was the Davids……..and she was the wrong gender. I am glad folk are getting to see just how awesome and versatile she is. From Bey ‘s love on top to Adele’s Skyfall what cant she do?

  • Kitwana

Syesha’s just 25 and still relatively young. When you think that the likes of Beyonce, Pink, JHud, Christina A, Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Nelly Furtado and Kelly Clarkson – who are all good female vocalists – are all in their 30’s, there may be a real opportunity for Syesha in today’s market as these aging popstars are inevitably edged out by a youth obsessed culture. Other than Adele, the new crop of young female popstars don’t really stand out as being great vocalists. That’s where Syesha can squeeze in and be unique.

  • Reginald

    Aint that the truth!

  • Christopher Auyeung

So underrated. Simon was awfully unfair to her during that season.

  • Lovesyesha

Syesha ALWAYS gave strong vocal performances on idol and combined that with great stage presence. She was the most consistent out of all of them that season in my opinion (certainly more so than archuleta) and was vastly underrated. Glad she is getting some credit now! I wish her the best of luck.

The singing was never Syesha’s problem.  She was always amazing.  As Archie said, “Did you not just HEAR that?”  Her problem is connecting with an audience and the emotional communication she just never understood.  I always hoped that one day she would get that music is a relationship… and not only with yourself.  Maybe this is a first step, but I still felt that, though there was emotion there, it was still all about her.

  • hellomusicgirl

I don’t agree that Syesha was most consistent performer of the entire season but those types of calls are always subjective.

It is pretty amazing that she made it to the final three after being in the bottom so many times and so many times being opined as the one that would go home next. She definitely has the vocal chops.

This is just a beautiful cover. Well done Syesha and always wishing you the best!!

  • suenigma

Syesha was amazing in Season 7 and she is even better now. Legend in the making – or at least deserves to be. In a way

  • jan

Wow Syesha – I’m impressed. I definitely want to hear more from her.

  • standtotheright

This is lovely. By not deliberately echoing Bassey’s style of delivery, it makes the song stand up better than the recorded version, IMO, (although I certainly understand why Adele and Epworth made that choice).

I wish her the best. She really is quite talented.

“Maybe this is a first step, but I still felt that, though there was emotion there, it was still all about her.”

I agree with this.  I don’t think she was the most consistent and was never able to connect with her even though she had some great performances.

    S7 best season IMO.
