If you made it all the way to the end of tonight’s show, you heard Ryan Seacrest announce that next week’s mentor will be Shania Twain, and the theme will be her catalogue.

Also next week, Rascal Flatts will perform their current single, “Unstoppable” and Shakira will sing “Gypsy”.

The Lady Antebellum performance of  “I Need to Know”,  taped last week will also be part of Wednesday’s results show.

In the meantime, speculate away…

    Ruh roh.

I don’t see this going well. Casey’s the only one I’m not seeing as a total mismatch. I can see him doing Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under although there’s are verses with female names that he might think he has to change. Crystal might be good for that one too.

Aaron is so doing From This Moment On.

  • Sinochick

I’m a big Shania fan. Her songs are catchy but not too difficult to sing.

Here’s what I think they will pick:

Aaron – From This Moment On (kind of a Rascal Flatts’ type ballad)
Crystal – Who’s Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? or That Don’t Impress Me Much (I’d like to her be “sassy” this week!)
Siobhan – You’re Still The One
Mike – God Bless The Child (that one is one of Shania’s most gospel type songs)
    Casey – Rock This Country
    Lee – You’ve Got a Way

  • alxsavage

    Crystal should do “I Ain’t No Quitter” :D. (j/k)

I like this theme. Current enough, and most contestants should do well. It’s guitar friendly.

  • FruMiddleton

I hope no one sings Don’t Be Stupid — that’s one of the songs I’m prepping for next season :(

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

MJ, the list is up at iTunes. :)

  • jammasta

Crystal – Who’s Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? or That Don’t Impress Me Much (I’d like to her be “sassy” this week!)

The latter choice would be AWESOME. I want Crystal to go upbeat again.

  • Kirsten

Yay! A theme based on a female artist. Those are pretty rare.

  • chearts77

I have Casey pegged as doing Rock This Country. I’m listening to her albums now to see if I can find a nice ballad for him. Time for another “Jealous Guy” because tonight was just too much on my nerves!!!! Maybe, “Don’t”. YES, Don’t!!! He could have another moment with this if he can put that same raw emotion into it!!

Aaron – From This Moment On
Siobhan – You’re Still The One or a fast song, Up
Mike – God Bless The Child
Crystal – That Don’t Impress Me Much
    Lee – Not sure yet

  • SpenserJ

Here’s what’s funny for me about Shania. I got married in a year when Shania’s songs were hugely popular. I did not give my videographer enough music for my end product apparently. So, he chose to use some other bride’s Shania cd as the background music on half of my wedding video. I can’t hear a Shania song without having some weird mental image of church, flowers, and a whole bunch of other crap I spent too much money on. So, next week should be extremely amusing for me LOL.

That said, I’m actually quite fond of Shania. I think she’s got a great voice. And, I’m thinking some of those songs may sound deceptively easy.

  • tinawina

Country is always tricky… make that audience mad at you can go home real quick. So who’s the most likely not to get the point of country music, or appear like they don’t respect the genre? I have to think about this one.

  • smeggingnuts

awwww I think Tim would have been awesome singing That don’t impress me much :D

  • sbalk017

Shania’s songs are kind of out of the box for just about all of them, so it’s gonna be interesting to see what the Idols pick. Plus, most of the songs are very, very feminine (Man! I Feel Like A Woman!, Any Man Of Mine, and That Don’t Impress Me Much come to mind…)

Lee: I have this weird vison of him killing it in all the right ways with “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)”

Siobhan: No big soprano notes to hide behind here, honey. That being said, there’s no way she’s not gonna do a ballad, possibly “It’s in The Way” or “From This Moment On” Nevermind, there’s “Amneris’s Letter” on here from Adiafor some reason. No way she’s not gonna do it.

Crystal: “Any Man Of Mine.” It’s an awesome, up tempo, grrl power song and she can ROCK it.

Casey: I second whoever said “Who’s Bed Have your Boots Been Under,” it’s perfectly old school predictable Casey. I could see him doing a ballad to “change it up” though i’m not sure which one.

    These are the hard ones.

Aaron: This is hard cause he’s a 17 year old boy and these songs make no sense for a 17 year old boy to sing. I’m totally stumped here.

Mike: Probably “God Bless the Child” or “You’re Still the One” cause if he tries to twang it up this week my country-loving soul might go in a corner and cry.

  • http://archulove.wordpress.com vickyvicks0

ugh! WHY! WHYYYYYYY!!! country?.. really?… ugh this sucks! I don’t know any of these songs1 (im nor from the states) bleh!

  • jms

OMG this is going to be an awful show. Shania is a lively performer that commits so totally to both the lyrics and to owning the stage that this Top 6 will look extra extra sucky in comparison. Worse, since the tunes themselves aren’t classics, the idols don’t have that automatic audience love of the song to fall back on. The songs are fun, but they’re really going to have to work them to sell them. And I don’t think any of this group is up for the job.

  • cinel22

Why does it have to be her catalogue? Why not just make it country in general? This could be bad for the guys. Of course I thought Dolly Parton week was silly and David Cook managed to nail it. So I’ll have faith. But Shania is no Dolly. There is a slight contrast in lyrics. Just sayin’.

  • LukkiStar

Whyyy must we be cursed with country week every year?!
My biggest fear for this is that it will keep Aaron Kelly around another week because he’s the only mildly country one, ugh.

I suspect it’s her catalog because that was the deal she negotiated to get her to be mentor. All the songs of hers that they sing will get a real nice sales boost. Likely her albums will get a boost too.

  • FruMiddleton

Mamasox – “Honey I’m Home” – throwing on her gospel/powerful vocals like from “Give Me One Reason” = country hit

Siobhan – “Any Man Of Mine” – it could really work for her big vocals & it’s a crowd-pleaser song. If Siobhan can get the audience grooving with her like in this video, she could get back in their good graces.

Lee – “Come On Over” I think this could very easily be styled into a country-rock hit for Lee. The lyrics work very well for an upbeat rock song too – now if only Lee gets the audience grooving and shows some emotion it’ll be GREAT.

Mike – “There Goes the Neighborhood” The lyrics are very moving and if Mike goes back to “Storyteller” mode, then this could work for him. The question is if he can preserve a country vibe in it, or if he goes full-on R&B.

Casey – “You’re Still The One” I think Casey could have a “Jealous Guy” type success with this song. If he arranges it well, he might even be able to have a monster hit (better than “Jealous Guy”) and blow past Aaron.

Aaron – “From This Moment On” It’s an obvious choice, but that’s Aaron’s MO. Now, if by some miracle he can actually pull off the emotional depth that this song demands, MAYBE he stays in over Casey.

  • tinawina

I like Country week. Tends to emphasize storytelling, warmth and emotion… all good qualities for a singer to have. But for this somewhat aloof, non-lyric connecting crew, this could be a challenge.

The thing is, Shania is more pop-country. Are her songs really like the more typical country songs? Or is this really just a pop night? I’m really asking, I don’t know.

  • gangreen29

I think Lee should sing It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing

Crystal should sing Any Man of Mine

  • jujumagumbo

I think Crystal and Soybean definitely have the advantage this week as the guys will have problems finding a song that isn’t ridiculous for a guy to sing. (Don’t worry, they’ll make them sound ridiculous anyway.)

This is the point I was trying to make. I’m aware she might want the publicity for her catalogue. BUT men shouldn’t be singing it.

  • HappyDaisy

    Soybean

    Tee hee!! :)

  • mozart4898

My biggest fear for this is that it will keep Aaron Kelly around another week because he’s the only mildly country one, ugh.

And yet most times he seems like he totally avoids his country side. Like this week, if he was smart he would have gone more that route, but nope. Plus, as someone else already mentioned, these songs don’t do any favors for a 17 year old boy performance wise either. He could really struggle. I also could see Big Mike struggling then again, who thought he’d go the route he did this week, honestly? He may have a country side we haven’t really yet seen.

I figure Crystal will follow her recent trend of not necessarily picking the most obvious songs. I wouldn’t be surprised if she could sing this list A to Z (well, W actually) and pull off each one because I think she could easily go country, it’s just not exactly her preference, and Shania is one of those pop/rock/country sorts so Crystal can put some of her folk rock vibe into it and it’ll work.

I think the one who may really have a problem with this week will be Lee. The guys almost have to go to the more playful side of songs when singing stuff originally done by a woman or else they have to do so much rearranging to make it work for them (I don’t see him singing one of her love songs in other words). Problem is, does Lee have a playful side? Casey can probably pick one of the simpler songs on the list vocally and try to toss some Southern rock/country riffs into it, smile, and shake his hair around and the women will go nuts even if it’s not that good. Siobhan could probably just pull one outta the hat and sing it because we almost already know what the judges will say about it, and the public is starting to agree with the judges and her too.

I could already see this being an Aaron, Mike, Lee bottom 3 week, but no way would Lee get eliminated. Of course that’s already getting way ahead of things – but I just see the songlist doing that to them.

  • SpenserJ

This is the point I was trying to make. I’m aware she might want the publicity for her catalogue. BUT men shouldn’t be singing it.

Well, I think it’s time the ladies get their fair share. Being that they found a way to sing the songs of Elvis and the Beatles, I think the fellas can find a way to rework a “girl” song.

  • kcostell

This is the point I was trying to make. I’m aware she might want the publicity for her catalogue. BUT men shouldn’t be singing it.

I would have said the same thing about Mariah Carey until David Cook came along.

  • cinel22

So I’m listening to some of her songs and I think Lee could do something nice with “When You Kiss Me”.

  • cinel22

I would have said the same thing about Mariah Carey until David Cook came along.

I brought that up in my original comment. I also said there’s a big difference in Dolly Parton’s lyrics and Shania Twain’s. I’m finding some promising songs now though. I think we can work it out dawg.

  • mozart4898

Was just listening to the previews on iTunes (don’t have the money to be buying all of these songs but I know quite a few, just need a reminder of them, lol). I could see Crystal doing “Crime of the Century,” it kinda has that sorta bluesy groove going in it – and while I don’t know how long it lasts, the end of the preview even breaks into a harmonica solo. Heck, why not go to the harmonica again this week? Casual viewers tuning in cause they know it’s “country week” (not quite) might hear harmonica and think “hey I like that chick” and vote just because of that.

But man, this week is slim pickin’s for the contestants. Some of these songs, I say no way…

  • jms

On they guys singing a song originally sung by a woman: I thought it was generally acknowledged that an easy way for the idols NOT to be compared to original artist and NOT to be called karaoke is for them to pick a song originally sung by the opposite gender.

  • LukkiStar

I think Lee will actually be one of the ones that has it easiset.
I’ll be completely honest and say I don’t know a single Shania song, but I’m having flashbacks to country (Dolly Parton) week in season 7.
Anyone remember how David Cook and Michael Johns both totally owned it that week and made their own very soulful renditions of their selected songs?
If done correctly, country can be infused with a lot of soul, so I think Lee will have no problem.
I barely count last year’s country week because they got it over with so early, and all I really remember from it was how disrespectful Randy Travis showed how truly dated he is by not knowing what to do with Adam Lambert.

I’m a little bit fearlful that they’re doing a theme and catalog this “confining” this late in the game. We’re down to top 6, and absolutely none of them completely fit the country bill.

Sidenote: I think Shania was the guest judge at the Chicago auditions? So maybe she’ll remember Crystal and Lee…

  • seriously

I hate country week, but whenever guys are forced to sing girl stuff it sometimes can come out amazing. (see Cook, David)

  • mozart4898

On they guys singing a song originally sung by a woman: I thought it was generally acknowledged that an easy way for the idols NOT to be compared to original artist and NOT to be called karaoke is for them to pick a song originally sung by the opposite gender.

But then you get into questions of range (Shania’s voice isn’t that high, but too high for them to sing in the original range), and whether or not to changes names, he vs. she, all of that sort of thing. I agree with what was said that the girls managed songs sung by guys and it’s a very valid point, but this list still seems quite limited. But any particular contestant’s fans will probably be put into overdrive to save their favorite if they have a shaky performance at this stage in the game so who knows.

  • http://idolwild2010.wordpress.com mythofsisyphus

I’m a huge Shania fan but honestly, most of her songs aren’t very melodic and don’t exactly feature strong vocals, which is going to equal karaoke to the max. Even taking that into account, I would love to see Lee do ‘Don’t Be Stupid’. I think he needs to do something sexy with whatever song he does if he wants to stay out of the Bottom 3 this week. Oh, and if anyone (particularly Siobhan, who I foresee doing truly heinous things to the ST songbook this week) picks ‘You’re Still The One’ or ‘From This Moment On’, he/she is dead to me.

Lee has a song on a preidol album called Sweet Sweet that is extremely similar to this song so he could definitely do it. I actually think he should slow things down this week though. Really break something down, sit down, and sing. Something like “Don’t” or “You’ve got a way”

The only other one I have a thought about so far is Crystal. She could do “Amneris’ Letter”. It is beautiful.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Shania Twain is kinda lame. As I remember it, she sold most of her songs by making sultry videos with revealing clothing to cover for her so so voice and weak songs. Here is where we find out who has some imagination and can rework a song into something better than it is. (Where is that guy in the plaid pants….?)

  • mozart4898

Sidenote: I think Shania was the guest judge at the Chicago auditions? So maybe she’ll remember Crystal and Lee…

Interesting note – I thought she was a guest judge but I couldn’t remember. If she was there in Chicago that’ll be interesting to see if she remembers.

And you could be right about Lee. I dunno. I guess I haven’t felt that he seems to connect all that well to his songs, and a song written by a woman just seemed like it’d be even harder for him to connect to. I could be wrong – it could be a breakout moment for him.

  • seriously

Siobhan will also bs getting the VFTW votes this week. She’s their new pick.

  • tierbee

Ack, all those exclamation points. I know it’s terribly petty but I got tired of Shania and her exclamation points in her song titles. Going to have to listen to some of the songs I don’t know… most of the ones I do would have to be reworked pretty drastically to not turn out cheesy.

  • mozart4898

The only other one I have a thought about so far is Crystal. She could do “Amneris’ Letter”. It is beautiful.

Someone mentioned this earlier for Siobhan, and I listened to the preview and thought the same thing. If she was comfortable on the piano, I’d say she could come out and go without any other instruments at all, just the piano and her, and totally bring the house down on this song. But isn’t it awfully short? I mean, I’d rather hear 1:45 of amazing music than 3 minutes of dreck but it seems they usually have a bit longer than that.

edit: Oh man, I just went and listened to the whole song on YouTube. Hair standing on end. If Crystal does this, I’ll bawl my eyes out. And I’m a 30 year old guy.

  • sunchick

So I couldn’t name a single Shania song title before I opened this thread. o_O But you never know how these super restrictive theme weeks will turn out, even if the artist aint your thang. I thought I would hate Mariah week and it turned out pretty well.

  • Valentin432

Wow a lot of people seem to want to see someone perform “Any Man Of Mine”. Mandisa actually got eliminated singing that song on country week in S5. Way too many lyrics for her to handle.

I actually liked Mandisa’s version. I remember her being kicked off being a bit of a mini shock, was she panned for the performance? I think she actually sped up the tempo of the song.

  • Incipit

Thanks for the list, mj. I’ve heard exactly one of these songs – the Boots Are Made For Walking style one about ‘that don’t impress me’. I thought perhaps I knew two, but “From This Moment” turns out to be a very schmaltzy (IMO) ballad – not the Cole Porter song with almost the same title I was remembering – and really – what was I thinking? Shania Twain covers Cole Porter? *Smacks Head*

Just an aside – So, where was a female artist theme week back when the cast was full of females? Or did TPTB think more of them would stick around to this point?

What’s obvious is I don’t know nothin’ about no country songs from this artist. Having checked out a few on youtube, I wouldn’t put her catalog anywhere near Dolly’s – no comparison.

This season just keeps making it impossible to give a damn, although I’ve been trying. Thinking I’ll pass on this week, but really, Good Luck to the cast! Looks like they’ll need it.

6 singers this week, an hour long show, and of the hour, only 9 to 12 minutes of music. Pathetic. Maybe they should consider that when they talk about falling ratings. I mean, they could give each of them twice that much time and still not even be close to half the show’s total time. I thought it was around this time in the season that it usually seemed they would start getting a bit more time though too…only like 2 more weeks and they’ll be doing 2 songs each right?

  • janeygotagun

For anyone suggesting that Shania doesn’t have a great catalogue from which to choose – you’re crazy! Shania may notionally be country but her last few albums were all pop and that’s why next week is going to rule. “Up!” and “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!” are basically ABBA tribute songs in disguise. Crystal doing a rocked up version of “Getcha Good” would be 6 kinds of awesome, although you can see big cheesy Mike blubbing his way through “You’re Still The One” as though he’s the first person to ever sing a love song to or for anyone.

    @janeygotagun
For anyone suggesting that Shania doesn’t have a great catalogue from which to choose – you’re crazy!

The only good reason for a critique that I see is the note that a great many of her songs are sung using female-perspective pronouns. It’s one thing to ask male performers to rearrange songs sung by a woman, but unless the remaining four guys want to get an eternity’s worth of gay jokes, they can’t sing stuff like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” “Any Man Of Mine,” or even “Dance With The One Who Brought You.” P.S. I’m a big GLBT advocate; I just have low expectations of the public at large – or at least VFTW. If all of the AI pundits fail to make a gay joke at one of them for singing the lyrics, I guarantee VFTW will.

  • CynicalDog

I loooove Shania because she’s always mixing it up and never gets stuck doing just country or just pop. She has a truly good singing voice, too — I’ve seen her live and she sounds awesome (no pre-recorded backing tracks). One of the few mentors this season who might actually get a Golden Ticket during an AI audition. I hope we’ll get at least three or four unique renditions of her songs from the contestants who are capable of making songs “their own”.

  • MalwareDie

I’m not enthused by this piece of news. I think her material is mediocre and believe that as a vocalist, she’s marginal at best.

  • TankieGirlie

I pretty much hate country music, but if we gotta Shania’s kind of fun..

  • http://www.noahsarkworkshop.com/tammyluebrecht_s9189 tammyinohio

I love Shania and cannot wait until next week!! I’ve been over on Youtube trying to get an idea of what I think they should sing and the only song that comes to mind for Aaron or maybe Casey is Rock This Country!! I’m thinking Casey should do a ballad though.

  • Mark

I actually liked Mandisa’s version. I remember her being kicked off being a bit of a mini shock, was she panned for the performance? I think she actually sped up the tempo of the song.

I think she got pretty reasonably panned for that, though I don’t remember the exact comments. I remember her being really sharp in the verses, and that there were several botched lyrics, so there was that, in terms of critique… so I don’t know how much of the issue was about the song as much as the particulars of that performance. I’d have to think about it, but somehow I think Crystal could pull it off, and it’d be a fun song.

Edit: Just listened to Mandisa’s version on YouTube. I think it’s at a faster pace on the verses, at the least. It is a pretty wordy song on the verses; yeah, Mandisa’s had lyric botches and was sharp. Upping the tempo was not that smart, IMO. Judges comments were clearly and overwhelmingly negative, and harsh on the song choice, though I wouldn’t count on the panel being consistent on that point if a contestant performed it well. Not her greatest moment, by any means.

(Not so bad she should have been eliminated, though. Bah!)

Which is why I have a lot of hope for Shania night; a lot of her songs are fun, and in a way that perhaps this season could benefit from, seeing as the nerves are unprecedented. That, and it does kind of remind me of Dolly night, which was in my opinion maybe the best overall night in AI7 (Beatles night #1 would have easily taken that but for a handful of serious trainwrecks, admittedly)

For what it’s worth, the only other Shania song covered on the show was by Carrie Underwood, who also didn’t get great reviews. I remember that one being panned largely for being (yes, I had to go there…) Shania karaoke, and I don’t think that will get repeated too much by these contestants, save Aaron, who couldreally make that mistake.

  • Margaux

I’m sad to think about Casey, Lee or even Mike ripping the stage with a more generic Country Week theme. Casey needs to watch video of Cook and Johns on Dolly week and have his own “Little Sparrow” or “It’s So Wrong” moment or he could be toast.

Aaron will be same as he ever is, Mike can make his usual drama from anything, Siobhan needs to avoid being Shania karaoke, Crystal will be fabulous. I will miss Katie, I agree with Kara that she’s not country, but neither is Shania, IMO.

  • calimari

As I say every year, I’m not a country fan, so I’m not looking forward to this, although I must say I was pleasantly surprised w/ the guys during Dolly Parton week in S7. Shania – the only songs of hers I know are that “don’t impress me much” and “feel like a woman” songs, so I have zero comment on who will sing what, and I’ll have no idea if they switch up the songs or not. Hope Casey brings it. I still want a crystal/lee/casey top 3.

  • Shorty

coco, Casey or Lee could kill on You Lay a Whole Lotta Love On Me. Here’s a male version

    Rascal Flatts
    Shakira
    Lady Antebellum

    Which one does not belong?

Also, there are 3 performances lined up already. Does that mean Shania won’t perform? I know she doesn’t have new material out but it’s just so unusual to not have the mentor perform.

  • sunny2

I hope someone sings “It only hurts when I’m breathing” It such a heart breaking beautiful song. One of the guys could strip it down, could be a winner.

  • tierbee

Can we please have the *old* Shakira and not the She-Wolf era Shakira? I don’t know “Gypsy,” will have to listen, but the two songs I’ve heard from her newest album make me recoil in horror.

  • bean99

I’m hoping Casey has a moment like Michael Johns did with Dolly week. That ranks up among my favorite ever performances on Idol.

I don’t think it will be difficult for them to find a Shania song that suits them but hope they choose wisely, especially Casey & Lee.

  • kansasfemale

I have always loved her If Your Not In It For Love video….don’t know that many of her other songs….Casey could kill this one…it’s fun to speculate even though we know they’ve been practicing whatever it is they chose for days now ….. still, it would be fun to see him have a go at that one however

  • BootStar

Shania’s no Dolly when it comes to songwriting, but she’s fun and a great singer IMHO. And I thought she was the best of the guest judges this season.

I actually expect both Lee and Casey to do well. Michael Johns, both Davids and Jason Castro all did great with Dolly Parton songs. (Michael’s live version and Cook’s studio are two of my all-time Idol favorites, in fact.)

I think Aaron (who usually sings songs straight up and is thus getting boring) and Siobhan are the ones who needs to be careful.

I’d love it if Casey, Lee and Crystal all went bluegrass. Speaking of which, why can’t we have an Alison Krauss week? Now THAT’S some country music I could get behind.

  • ross

    Rascal Flatts
    Shakira
    Lady Antebellum

    Which one does not belong?

Something about that doesn’t seem right!

  • cookbunny

Aaron – “From This Moment On” It’s an obvious choice, but that’s Aaron’s MO. Now, if by some miracle he can actually pull off the emotional depth that this song demands, MAYBE he stays in over Casey.

OMG now I know who Aaron reminds me of vocally…BRYAN WHITE. This song was originally a Bryan/Shania duet on her album, but they cut Bryan’s part and had Shania record his lines for the single/video.
Check out the original here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kksQh8_Bfb8

  • DarkGlamour17

Siobhan I BEG OF YOU please sing “Wild & Wicked”!! She would kill (I mean that in a good way) that song! I really really hope she sings that!

  • MaryS-NJ

I hope someone sings “It only hurts when I’m breathing” It such a heart breaking beautiful song. One of the guys could strip it down, could be a winner.

Yeah, my wish is for Casey to sing it. He needs a slow acoustic week and his voice is at its best when he’s singing about heartbreak.

  • jammasta

Siobhan I BEG OF YOU please sing “Wild & Wicked”!! She would kill (I mean that in a good way) that song! I really really hope she sings that!

Just listened to this song. And holy crap, it is the PERFECT fit for Siobhan to come back! Do it baby! Please? I want to see a Siobhan one-two punch with a great, spot on ballad this week and back to Siobhan unique glory with this one! Just….. watch the screeching for the sake of MJ and others?

And my God, Shania Twain is so hawt in that picture. It reminded me of what Puck said about Madonna in Glee the other day >_>. I don’t really wanna quote it.

I’m kinda hoping it’s Michael who goes next week. If we have a Crystal, Casey, Siobhan, Aaron, and Lee Top 5, I’ll be satisfied. Crystal, Casey, Siobhan, and Aaron have been favorites since the beginning. Lee sneaked up with some very nice performances. From then on, I only care that Crystal makes finale (and hopefully wins, unless any of the others make a HUGE comeback)

  • fusion8

I just hope somebody sings my wedding song “When you kiss me”. the girls will probably not pick it, but im hoping Aaron, or Casey, or even Mike will pick it. its a lovely song.

  • jersey

I didn’t even know Shania had enough songs for there to be a Shania week.

  • Scott

Here’s what I think they will be singing.

Crystal – “You’re Still The One”
    Michael – “You’ve Got a Way”
Lee – “There Goes the Neighborhood”
    Aaron – “Up!”
    Siobhan – “Amneris’ Letter”
    Casey – “Nah!”

  • Valentin432

Meh, it’s always the same thing with these artist centered weeks. We can always hope that the contestants will go out of the box and pick the perfect songs for them but most probably the producers will push them towards the biggest success of the artist.
So I expect to see a lot of the Come On Over cross over hits like You’re Still the One, From this Moment On, That Don’t Impress Me Much and Man! I Feel Like A Woman.

  • Mary102

Ok, seriously. This is a terrible theme. I mean, I hardly know any Shania songs, and I’m sure she has some good ones, but it’s one thing to let them choose, say, any country song, and another to limit it to just ONE artist, particularly one who writes so many “female empowerment” songs (hmm, they don’t want a certain dreadlocked guitar player to do well, do they?)

So, yeah, just ugh on this theme. The themes always work better when they can choose older (read better) songs. Unless you have the musicality and creativity of, say, David Cook to re-do Dolly Parton, it’s just not gonna work that well.

  • lucy

Country pop/poppish country tend to be the same level of bland prettiness and stereotypical emotion as “inspirational songs,” for me, anyway.

Going to take a lot of musical savvy, sense of oneself as a singer, and ability to find the musical/lyrical nuggets that make songs sound more real and genuine to turn them into anything that won’t get a well deserved “karaoke” condemnation, seems to me. Thus, this is another trap week for most of them, I have a feeling. Notably, for Casey, Aaron, and Siobhan, in particular, I fear, who seem more seduced by the pretty than the other three, to me.

  • metsman796

im sorry but i think this may be the worst theme in idol history
shania has a good quantity of songs but definitely not quality
none of her songs are real hits

  • oceana

Let’s hope that Ryan misspoke and they can choose any country song. Otherwise, it does seem to suck badly. I don’t know a single one of her songs myself, and probably most of the contestants don’t either.

I would love for Aaron to go home, but I’ve not liked him since week 1. After Aaron goes home, I’ll have my top 5 faves:

    Casey
    Lee
    Crystal
    Michael
    Siobahn

in that order. I’d love to see a Casey/Lee finale but know it won’t happen.

  • mozart4898

…one who writes so many “female empowerment” songs (hmm, they don’t want a certain dreadlocked guitar player to do well, do they?)

I don’t really know that any of Shania’s best known songs suit Crystal that well at all. Lately she hasn’t picked songs that were so obvious, and she’s said she picks songs usually that she can relate to personally. A lot of Shania’s lyrics are, to put it bluntly, pretty cheesy.

I do think she could do well with “Amneris’ Letter” though – it’s a lot more introspective and “deep” than what I’ve heard of most of Shania’s other songs. If she was comfortable with the piano she wouldn’t need any other accompaniment, just her. On the other hand, if Siobhan gets that song, my eardrums could bleed.

  • rk349097

Just when I thought this season couldn’t get any worse… I mean, this is just freaking ridiculous. I can understand giving someone like Dolly Parton, Queen, or even Neil Diamond the opportunity to mentor a night of performances from their own songbook, but Shania Twain?! She’s had, what, two hit albums more than 10 years ago? (Not to mention the fact that most of her success can probably be solely attributed to her relationship with a hitmaking producer…) I’m sorry, but Shania hardly qualifies as a “legend” worthy of her own themed “night” on Idol. I’d have absolutely no problem if she was brought in to do a more general “women of country music” theme, but to have an entire night of her songs when most of America can probably name only 2 or 3 of them is a joke. For Shania to demand this as a condition of being a mentor on the show is the kind of ludicrous diva behavior for which other performers have been barbecued, and I can’t believe that Idol is so desperate as to give in to it.

It’s Top 6 week already(!) and overall the top 6 is BAD

    I HATE this theme!

And I don’t know any Shania songs ;)

  • Nativenewyorker

Just looking at these songs makes me nervous. I only know a handful of them, since country is my least favorite genre of music. This could really be the most challenging week yet. I am worried for my girl Siobhan. The judges are just waiting to pounce on her every week. I want her to find a song that she connects with emotionally. Then I want her to go out there and sing the crap out of it! I think right now she is focusing so intensely on getting her vocals to be technically perfect. She needs to feel the song and then bring back that gutsy, fearless girl I saw in the semifinals.

I think Siobhan should sing like she is giving the finger to the judges! Sorry, but that’s what I think she needs right now. I listened to some of the suggestions from people here and I think “Wild and Wicked” might be the right one. I want her to come out blasting. If she blows the roof off the place, it won’t matter what the judges say. I don’t want subtlety, I don’t want nuance, I don’t care if every single note is perfect. I want raw emotion and passion from her once more.

  • gangreen29

Shania was a phenom during the late 90s and early 2000s. She has sold worldwide over 65 million albums. Her Come on Over album is the best selling country album EVER, it sold over 20 million copies. Her songs were some of the biggest of the late 90s, she is not some obscure pick lol.

  • lucy

    That about sums it up.

Well, but I think you’ve just said it. … She was a “phenom during the late 90s and early 2000s.”

Not a very long time. And not long enough ago to know whether her stuff has any staying power. ….

Of course, I really really don’t like poppish country songs, lol.

Too thin and cornball for me. So I guess I wouldn’t be much happier if she’d had a 50-year career singing thin, cornball music!

Too bad Tim isn’t still here though. I think Shania could help him out with being somebody who mainly gets by on their charm and looks.

  • rk349097

I never said that Shania was an obscure artist; just that she was only relevant for a brief period of time. I mean, Ricky Martin was a successful niche artist that had a couple of huge pop crossover albums in the late 90s and early 2000s; should Idol have “Ricky Martin night” next? In my opinion, if Idol is going to give an artist his / her own theme night, the artist in question should be a legendary figure with a large catalog of songs. Just having one or two massive hit albums doesn’t qualify someone as a legend. Just saying.

  • gangreen29

I never said that Shania was an obscure artist; just that she was only relevant for a brief period of time

And the beatles only made music for a decade. Shania was not a niche artist, she is arguably the biggest artist of the 90s. She doesn’t have the long career of a Dolly Parton, but growing up in the 90s she is a much bigger deal to me.

I’m not a big fan of the Beatles really, but their albums and anthologies/etc. have continued to sell even today. Plus each of them had their own solo careers too that were offshoots of the work they did together more or less. Will Shania still be selling albums in 30 years like the Beatles were (are)?

And biggest artist of the 90s (and early 2000s)? Pearl Jam? Nirvana? Heck, how about Garth Brooks? Will Smith? Britney even? For that matter, I know people don’t like them, but Creed has sold over 30 million albums or something like that, starting in the late 90s. I know I’m missing a lot of others, but every one of these groups/artists probably made just as big an impact on the music scene during this time (whether or not you like them, and god knows some of them are polarizing to the public). Yes, they can’t have all of them on, but to limit them to only her songs does seem constrictive. Shania being a crossover artist probably would have been fine as a mentor for a “Hits of the 90s and 2000s” theme, which would be a nice change from the much older songs many of them have been singing.

I still think it could be an interesting week – but mainly because this’ll show who can make something out of limited material.

  • OvenMitt

Thank you! Maybe it’s because I’m at the tail end of my 20s, but for years you couldn’t get away from Shania’s music. I’m far from a country fan, but she was ubiquitous in the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean, come on! Unless you were living under a rock or in utero during those years, you have to have heard of Shania Twain! Her album was the best selling album of the 1990s, for pete’s sake. Any music snob worth their salt could rattle off at least a few of her tunes. I think this week will bring out the best in almost all the contestants.

I think if Gwen Stefani can have a theme week for her songs and be a mentor, Shania Twain certainly can. Besides Shania has a new CD coming out that needs to be hawked. Too bad they couldn’t book Alan Jackson. He also has a CD out and a larger catalog, too. Who knows, maybe his label didn’t want to dicker with AI. I’m just grateful Whitney’s CD came out before AI started. I shudder at the thought of Whitney mentoring (“Crack is wack!”) and her singing on Wednesday would be about as atrocious as the aging disco performers from last season. When you have to speak the words to your songs rather than sing them, it’s time to hang up the microphone. I so want someone to sing “Honey, I’m home.” Or “Ka Ching!” Oh, wait, that would be the producers’ song choice.

  • rk349097

I think if Gwen Stefani can have a theme week for her songs and be a mentor, Shania Twain certainly can.

That would be 100% true, if the theme week that you referenced was limited only to Gwen Stefani or No Doubt songs. It wasn’t. If I recall, Gwen mentored a week where some of her songs were mixed in with songs from artists that inspired her (in fact, the only contestant that I recall from that night doing a Gwen song was Sanjaya). If this week’s format was akin to something like that, I wouldn’t have any problem with it. My problem is the fact that the song choices are limited entirely to Shania Twain songs, which I think is just ridiculous for a lot of reasons. That’s just my opinion.

  • newshound61

The Gwen Stefani week was limited to Gwen Stefani and No Doubt songs. Remember the “Bathwater” debacle by season 6 winner Jordin Sparks? Who conveniently enough was spared on Idol Gives Back week.

  • rk349097

I hate to tell you this, but Bathwater was covered by Sanjaya that week (and it was a debacle). I checked Wikipedia to see how good my memory was, and Jordin did do a No Doubt song (Hey Baby), as did Chris Richardson (Don’t Speak). The rest of the cast that week covered songs by the Police, the Cure, Donna Summer, the Pretenders and Cyndi Lauper. That’s hardly a mentor-exclusive song list.

As for Jordin being “saved” on IGB week (which took place four weeks after Gwen week, btw), you don’t really believe that she came in last, do you? I don’t want to relive that God-awful show, but Ryan never said that final two contestants on the stage that night were the bottom two vote-getters, nor that Jordin received the lowest amount of votes. They put her in that position just to get viewers to freak out that “OMG! Jordin is going home!!,” when they never had any intention of eliminating anyone that week. It was a lame ratings stunt, pure and simple. She was never in any jeopardy of being eliminated.

  • frazzledrazz

I bet Mike doesn’t have a song prepared from his “list” for the theme this week LOL

  • newshound61

    rk349097
I sit at the typewriter corrected. I mostly remembered the contestants singing Gwen’s songs (quite badly) and I do remember Jordin took a great deal of criticism for her performance.
And AI was pulling a ratings stunt? Surely, you jest. lol.
Just a weird connection to me with all the hoopla over Shania. I don’t think Gwen’s catalog (even with the addition of “songs by artists who have inspired her”) was a whole lot bigger, and truthfully, we don’t actually know what songs (or how many) were on the list. Not like it is now with iTunes. I just remembered that this week was IGB and Jordin who sang one of Gwen’s songs was spared that same week. Too much stream of consciousness, i guess.
I don’t understand all the fuss about Shania because mentors are not selected because of their vast knowledge of the music business or the size of their catalog. They’re picked because they have a CD (or a tour, as was the case I believe for Gwen) to hawk. The theme is an afterthought.
Or who knows, maybe they want to see which of the idols can give the biggest iTunes bump for one of Shania’s old songs, i.e. what jason did for Hallelujah and Over the Rainbow. I know other idols have done this, jason was just the first one that came to mind.

  • http://MJO judes

Unless you have the musicality and creativity of, say, David Cook to re-do Dolly Parton, it’s just not gonna work that well.

Actually – the one that redid Dolly the best was Michael Johns with Its All Wrong but Its Alright- even Dolly was impressed!!
I loved Shania earlier on in the 90′s [ we have the Come On Over " album which is great].My husband loves Shania & when he turned 40 I dressed up as Shania & mimed” From This Moment & Still the One”- it was good fun. Shania was huge in the 90′s – in many countries- so she is a really worthy of being a mentor!!

I’d love to see Casey strip one of her songs right down with an acoustic guitar – like as someone mentioned ‘ It Only Hurts When We’re Breathing’!!

  • waynesway

Yes – I like the idea of UP! for Aaron , Scott. One of the few songs that might be appropriate for him from the list. I think it will be a good week – Shania’s songs are great – and will be interesting to see how the contestants bring their creative artistry to bear with them.

  • mozart4898

I bet Mike doesn’t have a song prepared from his “list” for the theme this week LOL

I would have agreed, except who would have guessed he had “Hero” on that list? (If he really in fact did.) 200 songs on a list, and considering some of the songs he’s brought out there already, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a Shania song on there. I’m just having trouble imagining what it would be.

  • iluvai

I hope Aaron has a good week next week. It’s going to be more difficult for him as the youngest, and I think he needs to showcase his personality. I know a lot of people find him boring, but I think he has amazing talent. He’s probably too young to compete with the older contestants at this point. I just want to see him let loose and act like a kid a bit and have a blast! If he does that, I think he will have had a great run.

  • lg

I know Shania was huge in the 90′s, but I am not a fan of her brand of pop country. However, I think there’s a lot of good material for the contestants to put their own stamp on these songs. Not worried at all about Big Mike, I don’t see him trying to twang anything up, he doesn’t have to. I think he can capably handle just about any genre, has charisma and a talent for lyrical interpretation. I am rooting for him the most along with Lee, Casey and Crystal. Should be a great night.

  • chessguy99

I’m glad to see some of the non-country stuff that was released as singles in Europe and not the US/Canada. It will give the guys some better choices.

  • jujumagumbo

Maybe Shania will say something about not having to fit into a genre to shut Kara’s mouth.

I would be excited to hear their creative interpretations if any of them had done anything creative in weeks. Last time anyone did anything remotely unexpected with a song was Lee and Crystal with their “instruments out of a hat” technique.

Idols. . . “You Don’t Impress Me Much”. I wanted to love Siobhan, but she’s been boring four weeks in a row. blech.

  • idealistic03

shania week…i’m excited…i was born at the late 8o’s so i’m probably familiar with shania’s songs since she was a hit in 90′s…i’m from the philippines and during the 90′s i remember shania’s songs being a hit on radios here in our country..esp. from this moment on…

i hope casey sings uv got a way from the movie notting hill?(i hope i got it right, shania looks stunning on that rainbow colored dress on her video)..i think casey can pull this off ala jealous guy…i thought casey would end up being eliminated last night jst like michael johns..y’know…igb week, first to sing, some rock song in a supposedly inspirational week..glad he survives but i hope it was mike who leaves..

and for lee i have a gut feeling he can do a very nice and sexy version of ur still the one..yay..with his raspy voice and his guitar…

don’t know for others but i would like to hear that don’t impressed me muchthat was a nice playful song..

  • mozart4898

and for lee i have a gut feeling he can do a very nice and sexy version of ur still the one..yay..with his raspy voice and his guitar…

While I’m not a fan of Lee (he just always seems dull and “unconnected” to me most of the time), I think this might actually work for him – at least as much as most of his songs have. The more I think about this, the more I think that Casey could shoot himself in the foot big time this week. It shouldn’t happen, but it still might cause he just seems like he’s kinda tuned out now. Of the guys he and Aaron should be the most suited to something with a country slant but I think his time is about up. Although Aaron could still totally blow it too. For that matter, I think Crystal’s about the only one who would probably survive a bad week at this point – anyone else and it might get them eliminated.

  • sunchick

I mean, Ricky Martin was a successful niche artist that had a couple of huge pop crossover albums in the late 90s and early 2000s; should Idol have “Ricky Martin night” next?

Oh yeah, William Hung would be all up over that. Seriously, though, if they did, I’d know a lot more of the songs than I do for Shania week. (Don’t judge- there was a brief period of time when we used his music a lot in my dance classes.)

  • mozart4898

As long as we’re on the subject of various themes…I’m kinda surprised (and disappointed) that they haven’t had a jazz standards/big band theme or something like that. It seems they usually do something along those lines but it’s usually earlier I thought. Not that the music itself is current or that any of these people technically fit that style, but it’s a rather broad category and much of the modern pop/rock music today owes a lot to what jazz and big band music did in the first part of the 20th century. Plus it’s so standard in those genres to redo classic songs that it’s one of the few weeks where, if they’re any good, it’s not just like a karaoke contest. The songs themselves welcome different interpretations and improvisation.

  • Nativenewyorker

I agree with the person who suggested “Wild and Wicked” for Siobhan. I had to listen to it first, since I don’t know many of Shania’s songs. This is the one! That’s it. This is the song where she should come out blasting all power and rock the house. I want an uptempo, loud, raucous performance.

I hope this is the equivalent of Siobhan basically giving the finger to the judges! Blow the roof off the place. We haven’t seen this from her in a while and boy, it’s really time for her to liven things up. I would tell her not to focus so much on the technical aspects of her performance. She has the pipes, has the notes, just go out there and sell it and have some fun for a change, girl! One thing – watch the screaming! Don’t go all crazy on us! A little wail or two, not too high, not too loud. Yes, that’ll do it! I honestly wish we could send her a twitter or something. This has got to be the song. It could really shake things up.

  • Marie Ruffin

I don’t reco any of those songs….should be interesting.

  • Marie Ruffin

Both Adam and Siobhan sang Queen’s song in their Audition.
Both sang “Black” for top 12.
    Both can’t play with “Fire”.
And Adam sang “Born to be WILD” last year.
This week she’ll sing Wild and Wicked for sure. LOL. It’d be WICKED awesome <3.

  • waynesway

Totally agree Mr. (or MS.) Mozart re: jazz/ big band night!

  • iluvai

I want an Amy Grant theme night! That won’t happen. Oh well..

  • mandabutter

I love Shania and her music, I’m super stoked!! Please no one touch “Honey I’m Home” It’s filled with too much cheesy goodness and I don’t want it tainted. lol
Mike could do something with Forever and For Always or Don’t. Even tho it’s country, I don’t know what Aaron will sound good with. It’ll most likely be a ballad cuz her up-tempos are too female centric.
Don’t kill me, I think Lee could do amazing with “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love Ya)”
If Siobhan does She’s Not Just a Pretty Face, I think I’ll vomit. <_< Sorry. If she runs thru all the jobs and roles and female power lyrics we could have a 2 hour show peeps.
Crystal could do well if she rearranges just about any of these. God Bless the Child, perhaps??

Hell, Casey could do “I’m Gonna Getcha Good” if he does a Cook treatment and turn it into a somewhat tongue in cheek, stalker song.
HA, Crystal should do I Ain’t No Quitter.
eta Just ran thru some of the list, I’m a big fan with most of her collection but I certainly couldn’t remember each arrangement and melody. I think Casey has a winner for sure if he does “Love Gets Me Every Time.”

Ohh, I’m pretty excited for Shania week!

Aaron: I was thinking “I’m Gonna Getcha Good”. I know the Jonas Brothers did a cover of it for an album, so the tweens will love it. And it’s young, current, uptempo. Something he definitely needs. I love this kid, I love his voice, and I want him to have a stand out performace. But, knowing Aaron, he’s gonna go for a ballad. But I’m hoping he surprises everyone.

Crystal: I kinda want her to keep on the emotional track. Maybe “Forever and For Always”? I love that song, I think she could do really good with it. Or maybe a really fun, uptempo song that she can have fun with.

Lee: Stripped down ballad. “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” or “You’re Still The One”. Or any ballad he could really get into would be great.

Mike: Any ballad, pretty much. I think this theme is going to be most difficult for Mike, but if he can take one of the ballads make it his style, he’ll do fine.

Casey: Umm, I have no idea. I really don’t. I’m sure there’s someting on the list that he’ll do well with, I just can’t think of any right now. But I really hope he comes back fighting after that bottom 3 appearance.

Siobhan: “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!”. Haha, I just kinda want to see someone sing this. I have no idea why. Make it all sassy, have fun with it, put on a performace. Could be awesome, or a total trainwreck.

I really want them all to have a good week. That would be awesome. I know Casey was sick last week, and Aaron just finally got over being sick for 4-5 weeks, so I’m really hoping those two are the standouts on tuesday.
