Next week, Jamie Foxx mentors the Top 4 as they take on Songs of the Cinema. If you’ll recall, Foxx mentored the Top 5 last year for Rat Pack week.

After the jump, check out the 34-song list the kids will use to pick their songs. And man, the list is full of re-treads!  Yikes.  Not liking this list so much… Why are there so many bad 80′s songs on it?

At any rate, we might as well let the speculation begin. What do you think Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze, Casey James and Michael Lynche should sing?

On Wednesday, Daughtry will perform their new single, “September.” Bon Jovi is also set to perform.

  • Check out the full list at iTunes HERE.

  • mike19213

maybe eye of the tiger for lee… maybe it will convince the judges that he is actually in it to win it lol

  • kcostell

Looking at that list, Aaron just may have been the big winner tonight.

  • Mark

    Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes

Who was masochistic enough to draft this attempt to destroy all that is good and holy about the universe list of songs?

Ok, so not every song on here is evil. But still, as a list? Wow.

  • mike19213

crystal should do a kiss from a rose

  • SashaB

Are you kidding me? This is absurd. Yikes.

  • cinel22

Wow. That list is scary. Hopefully they can drift away from it if they have a song they’d rather sing.

  • chicksineggz

They don’t actually HAVE to pick one of those songs right? I thought this list was just in case they couldn’t come up with anything.

  • SpenserJ

Wow, that list is lame. Time to lower our expectations. So, for me, as long as no one sings Over the Rainbow or a Phil Collins song, I’ll call the night a win.

I think Crystal should go with Let the River Run. It’s the least offensive song on here.

  • hypertwink

    This list is not great.

  • Valentin432

Worst song list ever made in the history of mankind.

  • Olyabusha

I think it obvious they will do duets again, just too many duet songs. And I’m not a fan of the list, they def could’ve done better job making it!

  • washpd

Hopefully, these contestants are smart enough to pick a song not on the list, and the show manages to get it cleared. Falling Slowly wasn’t on the list last year, and that was one of the best things Kris ever did.

  • tufu11

if there really is a crystal/casey duet, they should really sing “up where we belong”. i am still reminiscing the duet of bo and carrie which happened 5 years ago!

lee- probably everything i do (i do it for you) or IRIS since he chooses very predictable songs. he will sing it ala david cook. i can hear him growling now.

casey- have you ever really loved a woman or IRIS again

crystal – the only song fitting her from this craptastic list is over the rainbow and sit and sing like katharine mcphee

michael – endless love because the song cheesy though i love it and he is cheesy so they’re a fit

  • tinawina

Worst Week Ever. And it hasn’t even happened yet.

    I weep.

  • Miss Blue

I think Crystal should go with Let the River Run. It’s the least offensive song on here.

Totally agree. I happen to like the song very much and think Crystal could kill this. I’d love to hear her plaintive voice do Into the West, but it would be near impossible to chop up and still have it resonate.

  • Valentin432

I understand better now the lame song choices of past year. I forgive you Matt and Anoop for picking Bryan Adams or Allison for picking the meteor song, etc.

  • Olyabusha

chicksineggz, I think they have to choose from this list, but if they really want to do a song that’s not on it, they have to ask for a permission and only then sing it.

  • tinawina

This list was compiled by aliens from the planet Gouda. They are calling Big Mike home.

  • cinel22

Lee could sing Iris and Casey could sing one of the Bryan Adams songs. I can already see Mike belting out Endless Love. Crystal can do What a Feeling. Don’t they sing two songs next week?

  • blkeener

So…American Idol wants the contestants to suck. L.a.m.e.

  • jammasta

Looking at that list, Aaron just may have been the big winner tonight.

    That hurts if true.

I’m not liking this list either. If we do have duets, here’s my list:

Crystal – “Eye of the Tiger”
Lee – “My Heart Will Go On”
    Michael – “One Night Only”
    Casey – “Summertime”
Crystal and Michael – “Beauty & The Beast”. Michael obviously does the girl parts, as said, in a bare midriff and a miniskirt, while Crystal owns the guy part with a suit of body hair.
Casey and Lee – “Flashdance – What A Feeling.”

Is it obvious that I don’t really care how train-wrecky next week is? Maybe it’ll be like Disco week last year which will have such a terrible song list that it’ll be good for the best people.

    America, please vote Crystal.

This list was complied by aliens from the planet Gouda. They are calling Big Mike home.

I don’t know where that rumor about my home planet came along, but it’s totally false.

Honestly, I don’t really know what songs they can sing. That list I posted was pretty joke-ish (pretty being an understatement). Casey could do Iris or Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman, I think. The latter almost got Matt eliminated last year, though.

Lee will probably get Iris. I don’t mind either way.

  • tinawina

I bet everybody tried to pick Iris. LOL

  • http://idolwild2010.wordpress.com mythofsisyphus

Ten bucks says DeWyze does ‘Iris’ (I think he’s smart enough to stay away from the Bryan Adams tunes). Though, I was looking at the list next to the “top songs” playlist (the “movie hits” one), which had ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’ from ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’. Now THAT would be a perfect choice.

  • SpenserJ

Ugh. I hate Bryan Adams. Casey should do “I’m Alright”. It’s actually a pretty fun song, and he could wail on his guitar.

This list was complied by aliens from the planet Gouda. They are calling Big Mike home.

LOL – that made me giggle :).

  • Lulu2

What a stinky list. Iris is good; not much else is. I really don’t want to hear anything ever done on Idol before. I wonder if the Idols are allowed to request something outside this pathetic list. Part of the reason AI’s numbers are down is because people do not want to hear the same songs over and over again. I could come up with 100 better choices than these. I might have to reach way back to old Hollywood, but that’s okay if the song is good. For instance, As Time Goes By was on the Sinatra list, why isn’t it here–we know there’s clearance for it? I’d rather hear that than Over the Rainbow or Summertime again. I know Crystal could bring it with Summertime, but I still don’t want to hear it. I loves You, Porgy, or something else from Porgy and Bess, okay (although it would be idol suicide to sing It Ain’t Necessarily So).

  • karrahbrooke

OK, I’ll admit “You’ll Be in My Heart” is actually a sentimental favorite of mine. I’d love to see Lee sing it, but I can’t see him picking a song from Tarzan. Hmmm. Maybe “Don’t You Forget About Me” or “Kiss From a Rose”? Or maybe he could completely change something up like “Eye of the Tiger” perhaps.

Oh man, this list. This should basically be Phil Collins/Kenny Loggins week.

  • http://MJO judes

Hopefully, these contestants are smart enough to pick a song not on the list, and the show manages to get it cleared. Falling Slowly wasn’t on the list last year, and that was one of the best things Kris ever did.

That’s right Washpd – & Kris chose this song from a movie he really enjoyed & it showed in his performance of it. This group needs to think outside the square & choose a song they can relate to!!

  • chicksineggz

chicksineggz, I think they have to choose from this list, but if they really want to do a song that’s not on it, they have to ask for a permission and only then sing it.

So, they don’t have to choose from this list. I know that whatever they pick has to be okayed by the original artist. Kris Allen did Falling Slowly last year, and that wasn’t on any list.

  • gangreen29

Is the movie hits list also cleared? Someone should sing the theme from Shaft.

  • NOLA

Please tell me we won’t have to hear Mike do Disney!

  • Mark

You know what, though? This might be the week where Crystal does something amazing, because she’s clearly going to have to pick a song which is so insanely not her it isn’t even funny (or most likely will have to, at least), and sometimes when that happens you get some really fascinating performances.

Or, ahem, I’m trying to claw for what little is left of my soul after reading this list. And, um, no one’s even picked from it yet.

Actually, I could have imagined this list as an extension of the cruelty of the audition rounds into the finals, where four contestants who were voted off are then voted back into a single episode competition, where they are then forced to choose from this list and sing it in front of everyone while we laugh cruelly at them.

  • Megz

    Song List=FAIL. Major fail. Yikes.

Four Disney songs. And I laugh at the High School Musical one. Maybe they were expecting Aaron to get through and sing it?

Big Mike. Sing “My Heart Will Go On”. It’s calling to you. “Big Mike, siiiiiinnnnggg meeeeee!!” Ohh, or “Kiss From A Rose”!

I can kinda picture Crystal singing “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”. I don’t know why, but I can, and in my head it sounds super pretty.

  • gangreen29

Oh man, this list. This should basically be Phil Collins/Kenny Loggins week.

I would die. die of joy if there was a Phil Collins week. It would be the second best theme ever only behind Bryan Adams (sorry tinawina and others, I love my velveeta with a side of Nacho cheese dusted with some cheetos). Also, confession time again, I filled out that survey and listed Bryan Adams and Phil Collins as my choices for mentors in the future, so if it happens its totally my fault.

  • will

There’s “Moon River,” the song I was CERTAIN Aaron would choose, and he woulda! Dang.

Since when is “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” by The 5th Dimension a movie song?? It was a mashup of two separate songs from a Broadway show, released many many years before there was a movie of Hair. And of course “One Night Only” and “Summertime” are two more Broadway songs, NOT movie songs.

Not only is this a lame list, it’s filled with ringers.

  • Valentin432

Ruben actually got a pretty good response with “A Whole New World”, would be funny to see Big Mike do that one.

I could see Crystal singing TLOTR song, it’s from Annie Lennox, won the oscar and she would get the ultra rabid fans from Tolkien voting for her.

Casey and Lee must been having a death match over Iris.

No one should do Summertime or Over the Rainbow, way too many good to excellent versions done on Idol.

  • flicker

Is the movie hits list also cleared? Someone should sing the theme from Shaft.

I was wondering the same thing, gangreen. It would offer 2 or 3 good choices for Casey, especially. There’s also a Stone Temple Pilots song, and Falling Slowly is on there.

  • morrissey

I really hope Crystal goes OTT big next week! I have a feeling though that she’ll be going for Summertime ala Janis, giving Simon and the Idolverse a chance to unfavorably compare her to Fantsia’s epicness! I want a Crystal/Casey duet next week!

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I really was joking about Casey doing Footloose. :-(

  • terps

Would love for Crystal to do a blues version of “One night only”

  • TopCatDC

Well, last year Kris managed to get Falling Slowly cleared, so maybe someone this year will be inventive and lucky.

    (Not holding my breath.)

  • tinawina

Okay, I’m calmer. Songs on the list that don’t completely blow:

    Iris
    Kiss From A Rose
    Summertime
Don’t You Forget About Me (?)
    Mrs Robinson
    Over The Rainbow
    Moon River (?)

I’m not sure what the Carly Simon song sounds like.

What do y’all think? Is there something else that should be here, or something that shouldn’t? I’m trying here.

  • chicksineggz

I don’t see why they only have like 30ish songs to choose. There are MANY other cleared songs that would have worked. Even most of the songs from last year’s movie theme aren’t on the list!

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

Ir dunno what they should sing but i really wish
I Need to Wake Up.. Melissa Etheridge was on the list for crysal

  • Jean

This is the campiest list in the history of lists. You could make a list of all the words that popped up on the screen in the old Batman TV show (Ziff! Pow! Kazowee!) and it would not be campier than this song list.

  • will

I have a feeling Crystal is going to go for “Let the Sunshine In,” and the thought does not please me.

My pick for her would be “Flashdance.” You’re welcome Crystal.

  • TopCatDC

Since when is “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” by The 5th Dimension a movie song?? It was a mashup of two separate songs from a Broadway show, released many many years before there was a movie of Hair. And of course “One Night Only” and “Summertime” are two more Broadway songs, NOT movie songs.

Well those Broadway shows were made into movies, so I guess that counts. Maybe Crystal could come out in a nun’s habit and sing The Sound of Music.

  • tinawina

I would die. die of joy if there was a Phil Collins week. It would be the second best theme ever only behind Bryan Adams (sorry tinawina and others, I love my velveeta with a side of Nacho cheese dusted with some cheetos).

Phil Collins has possibilities. :) I can’t forgive you for Bryan Adams. But I’m working on it.
**asks self, WWCD (What Would Crystal Do?)**

  • karrahbrooke

It would be the second best theme ever only behind Bryan Adams

I love me some Bryan Adams too :) Summer of 69, Cuts Like a Knife, Somebody, Run to You… I actually really liked Matt’s “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” last year too.

  • SpenserJ

I’m not sure what the Carly Simon song sounds like.

It’s from the movie Working Girl. If you’re old enough to remember that movie, you’ll definitely recognize the song when you hear it.

Also, confession time again, I filled out that survey and listed Bryan Adams and Phil Collins as my choices for mentors in the future, so if it happens its totally my fault.

Ouch. You just knifed me through the heart right there LOL.

  • sue

Big Mike will sing “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman – Bryan Adams” for his wife and make the top 3 with no problem and Casey will do some silly song and get eliminated. I hope not but who knows? Please surprise us Casey and bring it!!!! I want you to be the dark horse and take Lee out of the competition, yeah right. lol. I want a Casey/Crystal finale. :)

  • SpenserJ

Ir dunno what they should sing but i really wish
I Need to Wake Up.. Melissa Etheridge was on the list for crysal

Well, Melissa’s a fan, so maybe Crystal can just call her up and get it cleared.

  • Valentin432

Okay, I’m calmer. Songs on the list that don’t completely blow:

    Iris
    Kiss From A Rose
    Summertime
Don’t You Forget About Me (?)

I’m not sure what the Carly Simon song sounds like.
What do y’all think? Is there something else that should be here, or something that shouldn’t? I’m trying here.

The problem is that Summertime and OTR are way overdone on the show and some of the versions are true idol moments.
“Moon River sucks for the idol format” (Jason Yaeger TM). Also “Don’t You Forget About Me made me lose my frontrunner momentum” (Michael Johns TM).

So that’s three songs left, fortunately for Mike one has pretty much his name on it and Lee/Casey can share the other two.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

You know, Byran Adams has a really terrible asshat reputation. I don’t like his music that much, either.

I am at a loss with this list. Sigh. I guess I’ll sleep on it.

  • TwigLA

At first glance, this list is incredibly boring despite the fact that I like many of the songs on it. I’m hoping someone (Crystal) gets inventive.

  • tinawina

Ugh. I hate your Vulcan logic.

  • chearts77

Casey, please do Iris!!!! I wanted to hear this last year by my fave and didn’t get to.

  • jammasta

I know the theme weeks are over (IIRC, Top 3 and Finale weeks don’t have specific themes), but I had some ideas for other theme weeks:

Metal week with Marilyn Manson as the mentor
Christmas in March/April/May week with some random guy on the street dressed as Santa Claus for the mentor
Foreign week with Jackie Chan as the mentor
Songs from TV with Seth McFarlane as the mentor
High School Musical week with Zac Efron as the mentor
Glee Week with Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch co-mentoring (okay this one’s probably one of the few here that isn’t hilariously terrible. Crystal would totally sing True Colours)
Rap Hits Week with Lil Wayne mentoring
    Ke$ha with Ke$ha mentoring
Disney, Phil Collins, and Bryan Adams week (O WAIT A MINUTE THAT’S HAPPENING NOW) with Mickey Mouse mentoring

  • sue

LOL Bryan Adams wouldn’t be bad. They need more songs to choose from, this list is really limited.
I would love a Prince night? They had him on as a guest performer before so why can’t he mentor? I love the 80′s, lol, I wouldn’t mind having Cyndi Lauper mentor either. :) Madonna is too good for idol. She would never do it of course.

  • uagirl

Is it wrong that some of these songs are in my top 300 favorite songs list on my ipod? That said while the list is really limited, and excluding HS musical (god please no) is really old, I think there are some songs that can be worked with. Some can do a really good job on Mrs. Robinson, All Right Now, Iris, and Don’t You Forget About Me. Everything else is some pretty dated (yet some awesome) cheese. I would suggest everyone stay away from songs such as Flashdance, Danger Zone, and Footloose because that will lead to nothing but pain. Also I don’t think anyone would be stupid enough to take on J. Hud. Crystal may be able to do something with Age of Aquarius.

  • Lulu2

Falling Slowly isn’t on that list, not that I’d want anyone to sing it. Did Kris request it last year? Falling Slowly isn’t the only good song, maybe not even the best song from Once, so maybe someone could request a different song from Once.

  • Megz

Glee Week with Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch co-mentoring (okay this one’s probably one of the few here that isn’t hilariously terrible. Crystal would totally sing True Colours)

This would be the most amazing thing EVER.
    Just sayin’.

Jane Lynch should also guest judge as Sue Sylvester. Actually, scrap all the judges. Have Jane be the only judge. Amazing.

  • will

If they’re going to list “One Night Only,” why don’t they go for the obvious and include “And I Am Telling You…” as well? GOD KNOWS that’s been cleared. And I want Lee to sing it.

  • sbalk017

These songs are so obvious, overdone, cheesy, and horribly boring.

I unabashedly love “You’ll Be In My Heart,” so Big Mike is abviously going to ruin it for me.

I can see Lee doing “Mrs Robinson”

Crystal should stick with what she’s awesome at, aka “Earth Goddess with Guitar,” so the Carly Simon song…

Casey… Please, please, please do not ruin Iris or The Breakfast Club song.

  • jammasta

This would be the most amazing thing EVER.
    Just sayin’.

Jane Lynch should also guest judge as Sue Sylvester. Actually, scrap all the judges. Have Jane be the only judge. Amazing.

You are frigging brilliant. This is the best idea ever. Sue Sylvester judging would be damn brilliant. That would be an amazing week.

You’ll Be In My Heart is actually a great song IMO.

  • tinawina

    jammasta’s list is awesomesauce!

  • MayMirabella

I like Jamie Foxx but he was a mentor last year. I would rather have seen his costar in Dreamgirls as the mentor: Jennifer Hudson but perhaps her schedule did not allow for this.

But as much as I like Jamie as an actor, I would prefer to see a new mentor for next week.

  • will

I can see Lee doing “Mrs Robinson”

He’d better steer clear of that, it would be way too repetitive after “The Boxer.” He’d get slammed for choosing it.

  • Jean

I unabashedly love “You’ll Be In My Heart,” so Big Mike is abviously going to ruin it for me.

I love it too!! How many of these songs do you think are on Mike’s list of 200 songs? I’m guessing at least half.

I can really hear Casey (and picture him standing stiffly behind the mic stand making his Casey face) on Eye of the Tiger.

  • Miss Blue

Here’s another vote for I Need To Wake Up/Etheridge for Crystal. Won a damn Oscar for gawd’s sake, that should make it eligible. And I sure can’t see Melissa turning down the request for clearance.

  • cinel22

Is Jamie Foxx mentoring next week? I didn’t see that anywhere.

ETA: Never mind. Just saw it.

  • girlygirl

This list pretty much blows. Hopefully at least a couple of people will find songs that aren’t on the list, get them cleared then performed them beautifully, a la Kris with Falling Slowly last season.

    Think outside the box!

A couple of songs I always wanted someone to do on Movie Week on AI are “This Used to Be My Playground” from A League of Their Own and “Now I Have Nothing” (or is it titled “God Give Me Strength” IDK) from Grace of My Heart. The movie Once has several more excellent choices, including a couple of Van Morrison tunes (although I’ve heard he won’t clear his songs for AI). Do these songs have to have been written originally for the movie? If not, there have been a lot of soul/r&b songs used in movies that Big Mike could sing.(pick anything from the soundtrack of The Commitments, for instance). Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” was used in one of my all-time fave cult movies, Strictly Ballroom (although singing this could bring unfavorable comparisons to Allison last year).

  • Megz

You are frigging brilliant. This is the best idea ever. Sue Sylvester judging would be damn brilliant.

That would be an amazing week.

She could end every critique with “And that’s how Sue sees it!”

Oh man. I want to see this. Really bad.

Here’s another vote for I Need To Wake Up/Etheridge for Crystal. Won a damn Oscar for gawd’s sake, that should make it eligible. And I sure can’t see Melissa turning down the request for clearance.

Agreed. Love Melissa, love Crystal, it would be PERFECT.

  • girlygirl

I bet Lee and Casey are going to fight over who gets to do “Iris” since that’s one of the few non-lame songs on this list

  • mrgrk

Seal’s Kiss From a Rose is an amazing song. At quick glance, the rest are really cheesy or done to death. Ugh. Another week I’m thankful for my DVR.

  • cmom

I really like top 4 because we get to hear two songs. I think AI7 was hall of fame week or something? I know Archie sang Love Me Tender and Stand By Me and I have just had a paranoid “aha moment” Just last week Archie’s more-than-5-million viewed “Stand By Me” disappeared from youtube. Now I know why. After we hear the top 4, all the Idolholics (including me) go scurrying off to youtube to see what Cook/Archie/Castro/Brooke or Adam/Kris/Alison/Gokey, etc. sang so we can compare to this year. So the case of the disappearing youtubes is now solved even if I am the only one who cares!

  • frazzledrazz

Disney, Phil Collins, and Bryan Adams week (O WAIT A MINUTE THAT’S HAPPENING NOW) with Mickey Mouse mentoring

I’ve always wanted to see a Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 week… Lee singing Bright Lights would be perfection. A girl can dream lol

  • will

Do these songs have to have been written originally for the movie?

The only ones off the top of my head that I know weren’t written for the movie are the Broadway songs, the rest I believe were. But if they start including songs that just are featured on soundtracks, the category becomes kind of meaningless.

Oh hell, it’s such an awful list anyway, who cares? Include anything but these songs.

  • Valentin432

There have been Melissa Etheridge songs cleared for Idol so that’s not the problem.

In fact, there are a lot of songs sung on idol that could fit the theme and they didn’t put in there, so there’s a reason beyond the fact that they couldn’t clear songs.
Maybee they just really want them to sing overdone cheesy ballads that would please the old female demographics of the show, that’s my best guess.

  • gangreen29

I hope the movie hits list is also cleared, because I really want Crystal to sing In Your Eyes

  • wjmtv

You know, this would all be over with a lot quicker if they’d just stick the four of them in one of those Focuses and drive them off a cliff.

    (sigh)

I take comfort in the fact that the iTunes page says, “*Top* Songs in the Category” before presenting the list. Which implies that the complete list is longer. (fingers crossed)

I’m thinking Casey should do “Mrs. Robinson.” For Kara.

And speaking seriously, Lee could do a nice job with “I’m All Right.” Especially if he rocks out like he did with “Treat Her Like a Lady.”

  • catira

OMG Casey should do Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins. That would be a moment indeed. Heh.

  • tinawina

Well, wallowing in the depression that was brought on by this list has finally inspired me to go write the papers I have been avoiding all week. Thanks Idol Producers!

  • weelassie

Let the River Run is a pretty nice song. I do remember it from Working Girl. The Annie Lennox song is a tough one. She even had a hard time singing it live for the Oscars. I do believe that it won that year. Is from Return of the King. There are so many movies and such a small list. Some of these artists have several movie songs so I don’t know why those couldn’t be also on the list.

  • emmuzka

Oh man! The most current songs in that list are “Iris” and “Kiss from a Rose”, and I have a feeling that even those came out in the last century!

Lee should skip the list and sing Creed’s “Can you Take Me higher from the movie Titan A.E., because there isn’t a better way to sound like Greed than sing an actual Greed song :)

And I would love it anyone of them would dare to go Bollywood route and pick a Slumdog Millionaire song, but that would be too much to hope!

  • sweetsweatredheat

would love crystal to sing a diva song…then mocks simon regarding big notes. lol! she’ll rock it out with that tina turner song and once again remind everyone she’s multidimensional! claps!

mythofsisyphus, i’ll take you on that bet. lol!
lee sings kiss from a rose and proves tufu11 wrong (fireflies ehem).

mike singing eye of the tiger in boxering briefsshorts – epic!

casey (aka princess according to siobhan)…a whole new world. enough said.

  • jammasta

She could end every critique with “And that’s how Sue sees it!”

Oh man. I want to see this. Really bad.

GOD. I am freaking JEALOUS of your brilliance! Seriously, BEST. IDEA. EVER.

For a Matchbox Twenty week, I wouldn’t want to see Lee do Bright Lights, probably because Kris did that song. Why am I discussing potential themes and not this one? Oh, right, because this one has a pretty crappy list of songs to choose from and discussing it makes me die a little inside.

  • girlygirl

    frazzledrazz

you do realize that Kris sang Bright Lights on last year’s AI tour, right? I know that doesn’t make it his song — it’s Rob Thomas’s song — and Lee should be allowed to sing whatever as long as it clears. — but I’d still steer clear. Got to be other Matchbox20 songs he could do without worrying about the comparisons…

EDIT Not that it matters since there isn’t a Rob Thomas themed week…

  • Mark

I think only the truly, heavily invested online fans would really grab a comparison to a performance that happened on tour. I certainly wouldn’t disqualify a song for that reason.

  • karrahbrooke

I’ve always wanted to see a Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 week… Lee singing Bright Lights would be perfection. A girl can dream lol

OMG me too. I was so excited that Kris did Bright Lights on the tour. Personally, I’d love to hear Lee do 3 AM or If You’re Gone.

But I digress. This is movie week. I’m hoping at least one person pulls a Falling Slowly.

Return of the King is newer than City of Angels and I don’t know what movie Kiss from a Rose came from, probably a few.

  • frazzledrazz

you do realize that Kris sang Bright Lights on last year’s AI tour, right?

Nah, didn’t know that… I don’t really keep up with Idol once its off the air. I am a huge MB20 fantard and Bright Lights is my fav. I would seriously freak if Rob Thomas was the mentor. Funny thing is, I just googled to see if he was ever on Idol and last month he said he would love to be a guest mentor on the show. Idol producers— are you listening?!?

Why am I discussing potential themes and not this one?

Probably cause this season and all of its themes suck so bad.

  • Megz

GOD. I am freaking JEALOUS of your brilliance! Seriously, BEST. IDEA. EVER.

Aw, thanks! But you’re the one that gave me the inspiration when you said “Glee Week”.

A Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 week would be freaking AWESOME.

So many amazing potetial themes..and they went with “Songs Of The Cinema”
    Blahhh.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Wow, I do hope the Bachrach/Costello “God Give Me Strength” is available. I think it could really work for Lee if he sings the Costello version from “Painted from Memory”

  • girlygirl

on the results recap thread, someone suggested Casey do “A Weary Kind”, from the movie Crazy Hearts. That won this year’s Oscar for Best Original song.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

Speaking of Costello…how about “She” from “Notting Hill”

  • tanigue

Horrible, horrible list. i hope someone in the Top 4 could pull a Kris Allen and pick a obscure gem like “Falling Slowly”.

    Suggested theme weeks:
    U2 Week
    Creedence Clearwater Revival Week
The Rolling Stones Top 500 Songs of All Time
    Grammy Award-Winning Songs
Flower Power Week (Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, etc.)
    Carole King Week

I doubt very much that the “Movie Hits” list is part of the song choice list they gave the idols. It doesn’t make much sense to seperate the two and also to have several songs that appear on both.

  • cinel22

They did Rolling Stones week already this year.

Well that makes much more sense then. I was wondering where they were going to get the top 500 songs from.

  • shuey

    (They should sing)& will :)~

    casey or lee!

Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman – Bryan Adams

    mike
Kiss From a Rose – Seal

    Bowersox

Up Where We Belong – Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes
or Simon & Garfunkel – Mrs. Robinson

Lee Iris – Goo Goo Dolls

what a small list here guys..its gona be tuff!

  • http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=561466&st=0 Preston

My goodness, Crystal, please sing Into The West, and what the hell, pull a Bo and do it a capella.

It’ll be the moment of the season, no doubt.

  • solitaire

I’m posting before I read the comments in this thread, so if I’m repeating others, my apologies.

    Mike:

    should do: Over the Rainbow

will do: Kiss from a Rose

    Crystal:

should do: Sorry, I got nothin’ here

    will do: Mrs. Robinson

    Lee

    should do: Moon River

will do: (Everything I do)I do it for You

    Casey

should do: Let the River run

will do: Have you ever Really loved a Woman

Man, that list is all kinds of suck!

I’m getting the impression they want Lee to win so bad, they’re going to retire the bus and bring on a convoy of mack trucks to get Casey out next week.

    Run Casey RUN!

  • idolprocrastinator

Falling Slowly isn’t the only good song, maybe not even the best song from Once, so maybe someone could request a different song from Once.

If anyone does Lies from Once, they’ll automatically win my vote. Hell, everyone should try to clear a song from that Soundtrack, and then the show might actually have a chance of being interesting. Although I think Crystal is the only one who has the emotional sincerity to pull off one of Glen Hansard’s songs.

Stay far away from Goo Goo Dolls and Bryan Adams (it’s the kiss of death, remember Tim Urban and Matt Giraud). Plus, those songs are cliche and trite IMO.

  • alxsavage

Crystal would be amazing, amazing with Iris.

I fell in love with her talent when I heard her singing If It Makes You Happy, Iris has the same kind of emotional connection, powerful chorus without being bombastic.

It’s perfect for her to Crystallize it.

On the other hand, call me cheesy, but I recently heard a cover of What a Feeling , and another one of Eye of the Tiger (both by Hollywood , Mon Amour) that are actually quite charming. They are subtle…but this season needs that moment, where someone takes a song and makes a subtle, enjoyable cover that no one would have predicted.

However, I’d be happy with the show as long as no one chooses any Bryan Adams song. Can’t stand that guy’s music.

Although I think Crystal is the only one who has the emotional sincerity to pull off one of Glen Hansard’s songs.

I agree, and she loves Glen Hansard!

  • cookcricket

Maybe just maybe they’re giving the top four such a limited choice that TPTB think at a couple of them will say, “You want me to sing what?”, can’t I try to get…[input brilliant song of their own choice]. Maybe? No, I didn’t think so either.

  • Cari

Are they singing two songs next week? Are they bringing back the stupid duets? I can’t believe they will do an hour long show with only 4 songs!

  • PatD

Jeez, could you imagine Crystal doing “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” from Pat Garret & Billy the Kid?

  • Jean

Are they singing two songs next week? Are they bringing back the stupid duets? I can’t believe they will do an hour long show with only 4 songs!

What would make the most sense to me is for everyone to perform once individually and then do a duet. 4 songs will have too much filler, 8 songs in the hour will give us about ~45 seconds of each song (God forbid the judges’ comments be shortened) and Glee will run 5 minutes over anyway. 6 would work okay. I didn’t mind the duets last year, although this year IDK who I’d pair with whom. It does seem like several of the songs on the list are duets in the original version (look at all those ampersands in the Artist column), if that means anything.

  • monleo1705

Is it me or is this whole freaking season a re-runs of themes and mentors?? No wonder it’s such a tired season with bad ratings! Sorry if I’m ranting or if this has been brought up, just that I remember all too clearly last year’s Kris’s amazing Falling slowly and Anoop’s smooth Bryan Adams number to listen to this season’s bunch possibly redo it again and worse thing is the list isn’t all too exciting and long. Man, it has been a while since I commented on Mj’s blog…just cos there isn’t much to comment this season.

The only way to justify this season is for Crystal to win. Other than that, most of them are just going to fade into a background of obscurity.

  • Lulu2

Jeez, could you imagine Crystal doing “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” from Pat Garret & Billy the Kid?

Cool, but it’s not on the freakin’ list. I’d like the producers to be more flexible (i.e., less cheap) and the contestants to have more cajones. Last season, Kris apparently requested Falling Slowly. How much do you want to bet that Adam put him up to it?

  • Lulu2

It’s perfect for her to Crystallize it.

I like that. To Crystallize a song.

  • http://www.lindafoltz.com linda2u

Lulu2 – I adore Adam but Kris talked about loving the movie and deciding to do “Falling Slowly” on his own. It would be nice to have more obscure songs for next week. Maybe they’ll be able to request specific obscure ones on their own.

    Here’s my list:

Mike – Kiss from a Rose
Lee – Have you ever Really Loved a Woman
    Casey – Mrs. Robinson
    Crystal – I’m Alright

  • mozart4898

A few people up the page here already posted some of these but my thoughts:

Crystal – Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (thought she’d do it during inspirational week), or possibly Over the Rainbow (I know it’s been done, keep in mind, she picks what she wants to and supposedly hasn’t watched the show before)

Mike – Kiss from a Rose (I had him singing this in my mind since like a month ago at least and I can’t imagine anything else now)

Lee – Iris (seems to suit his sort of style…whatever it is)

Casey – Mrs. Robinson (I actually think this would work well for him…but it’d be quite risky considering Lee did “The Boxer” a couple weeks back. This song doesn’t have a lot of sustained notes that would show off the now infamous “lamb” vibrato)

If there are duets, I think it’s actually pretty easy to pair them. Big Mike really couldn’t sing with another guy, it just wouldn’t seem right, so he’d sing with Crystal. Lee and Casey then by default. (And IMO Mike and Crystal could sound awesome together…probably cheesy as hell, but think Stilton or Roquefort instead of Velveeta.) As for choices of songs for duets, I don’t know so much there. Maybe “Summertime” for Mike and Crystal and…oh heck, I dunno, for the lulz how about “Beauty and the Beast” for Lee and Casey?

ETA – LOL @ linda, I was totally typing all mine out while you had just posted yours, we’re definitely thinking along the same lines…

  • will

Mike – Kiss from a Rose (I had him singing this in my mind since like a month ago at least and I can’t imagine anything else now)

    Mike already sang that song.

    http://www.thatsongsoundslike.com/2009/11/08/seal-vs-nickelback/

LOL! That’s totally it. I remember now, it WAS that week I thought he should sing that song, I just didn’t make the connection WHY my brain was thinking that. The comments on that page are quite funny too – no, it’s not the EXACT same song, but they’re right on, it’s the same chord progression and general sort of melodic structure. Strip the guitar from “Hero” and people would hear it a lot more.

I still wouldn’t be surprised if he picked it. It seems to have the level of cheese innately required for Mike. And as much as I hate to admit it, I at least think it’s a good song and would totally fit his voice and range (there’s some crazy high falsetto in there that I can already see Mike licking his lips over). Maybe too well, cause it’s so obvious.

  • Lulu2

The Top 4 should all go very bluesy. Apparently a song qualifies if it is original to a movie or the source material for the movie (i.e., a Broadway musical). I have suggestions both on and off the list.
Crystal: Not on list: All that Jazz (Chicago), Holding Out for a Hero (slowed way down).
On the list: Into the West or Kiss from a Rose
Lee: Things Have Changed (Dylan, from Wonder Boys), or I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues (oldie from Love Affair)
On the list: Whatever Crystal doesn’t choose, either Into the West or Kiss from
    a Rose
Michael: Not on list: One Year of Love (Queen from Flash Gordon) or I Know
Where I’ve Been (from Hairspray, for a guaranteed Top 3 spot)
On list: Iris (and rock it up, to show another side of himself)
Casey: Not on List: Lies, Say It to Me Now, or When Your Mind’s Made Up (all from Once). Any of these will greatly increase his chance of a Top 3 spot
On the list: Can I Have This Dance

  • Lera

Lee will pick and get “Iris”

Mike will pick and get “Kiss from a rose”

Crystal will pick and get something not on the list that is posted here

Casey will pick “I Do It For You” but not get it. They’ll tell him he has to sing “Eye of the Tiger” to increase his chances to go home.

    If they sing a duet:

Lee and Casey:Mrs Robinson (total Fail but that is what they will give them)

Mike and Crystal:Up Where We Belong (yep that is what the show wants is a Mike&Crystal final)

  • http://www.fatladysings.us TFLS

Not a scintillating list to be sure. I do hope Crystal at least has the imagination to request something off the list. I agree that any of Glen Hansard’s songs from ‘Once’ would be fabulous (‘When You’re Mind’s Made Up’ is a particular favotite of mine). Lord – there’s just so much out there! I don’t know how available it all might be….but what about the music from ‘Purple Rain’? Or ‘Heavy Metal’? ‘Footloose’?? Really??? Don’t get me wrong – I love Kenny Loggins – but that songs just so pedestrian (not to mention overdone to the extreme!). Oh well. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I’m just glad both Lee and Crystal are still there. I fully expected to see Crystal heading home tonight. The judges have been dissing her something fierce lately. Unwarranted, in my opinion. And I really hated how they shot Siobhan down. Not that I was a particular fan, mind you – but her choices were always fresh and interesting. I really loved what she sang on Letterman. Best I’d ever heard from her, actually. Pity she didn’t sing like that the last couple of weeks she was on Idol….still, I’m convinced she’ll end up with a contract after the tour.

  • koshka

I swear this is the retread season.

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

the only one to ever have a “moment” with Kiss from a Rose” on idol was Jack Black… and no one will EVER TOP THAT MOMENT lol

  • http://www.amadcow2.com amadcow2

As Admiral Ackbar would say… It’s a trap!!

Danger Zone, Eye of the Tiger, I Feel Good, etc… all spell downfall for those who sing them (Are you listening Casey?).

Based on the list, what would I like to see:

Lee – Up Where We Belong
    Crystal – Let the Riverrun
    Casey – Iris
Mike – Kiss from a Rose

I would love to see someone (i.e., Lee or Crystal) tackle In Your Eyes.

Oh well, maybe I can just play the Jensen Ackles lip synch to Eye of the Tiger from Supernatural in the background while this train wreck happens.

  • savgal

I sincerely hope someone pulls a Kris Allen, and gets something else cleared that’s not on this cheesy list. The only thing I’d like to hear would be “Summertime”, really bluesy, by either Casey or Crystal. Would also make a killer duet. Casey, bring that blues guitar back out, son!

  • BootStar

“Kiss From A Rose” is kinda obvious for Big Mike. He has a baby now (have you heard?), so I predict he sings “You’ll Be In My Heart.” Actually he and Crystal dueting on that is the kind of sh*t the producers would eat up. It’s from Disney’s Tarzan movie and it’s a real tearjerker if you have little kids. (It’s ideally suited for adopted kids, so it would have been sweet to hear Little Aaron sing it!)

I think Casey should sing “Let the River Run,” and Crystal should do “Iris.” Would love to hear the two of them duet on something from Once. That would be awesome.

  • mmb

OMG that is the list ?????????? why so short? why so limited? why so terrible???

  • miss-silverwing

    Casey –

“Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls – It’s a more obvious choice for Lee, but imo it’s his best bet.

    Crystal –

“Mrs. Robinson” by Simon and Garfunkel – I’m predicting she’ll do this song; fortunately, I think Crystal can do a great job with it. Or maybe SHE could do Iris. That would be sweet.

    Not sure about the others…

  • V8Adam

Casey – I’m Alright (Theme from Caddyshack) – Kenny Loggins ['cause he wants to pick strange songs]
Mike – Endless Love or Kiss from a Rose – Lionel Richie & Diana Ross ['cause he's sappy]
Lee – (Everything I Do) I Do It For You OR Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman – Bryan Adams [don't see him singing the other choices]
Crystal – Mrs Robinson – Simon & Garfunkle [unless she wants to belt out Celine Dion]

  • Dutchgirly23

One of my all time favorites is Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, I would really love to see my favorite, Lee, perform that song.

  • V8Adam

I’m thinking Casey should do “Mrs. Robinson.” For Kara

I couldn’t agree with you more, especially since she handpicked him at the auditions (“take your shirt off…”), then threw him under the bus on Tuesday (way to go Kara!!!!)and said he sounded like a lamb…….
I’m not a fan of Casey…but still what Kara did WTF?????????

  • spirit62

    Crystal- Summertime
    Casey- Footloose
    Mike- Endless Love
    Lee- Moon River

  • abbysee

Ugh, you know the list is bad when as you go down and check them off one at a time, and then you realize there are no songs that you actually want to hear any of them sing, if you like them at all. They all suck and blow. WTF are they thinking? I think that it’s sabotage. It’s like suicide. Certainly they can’t think that we are gonna tune in to see this group sing these songs with any degree of hope that there will be a moment. Like I said, suicide.

Too confused to make a list…gonna watch the entire Gaga performance that was bad last night, cause a longer performance will bring clarity, lol. Or maybe just cleanse my palate for making a list.

  • V8Adam

I am a huge MB20 fantard and Bright Lights is my fav. I would seriously freak if Rob Thomas was the mentor. Funny thing is, I just googled to see if he was ever on Idol and last month he said he would love to be a guest mentor on the show. Idol producers— are you listening?!?

I wasn’t a fan of Rob Thomas till recently. I just listened to him on the radio… but I went to see his concert and fell in love with his voice…
Now if only Lee or Casey (WGWG left) gets to sing one of his songs………

  • lucy

Holy sliced crap. This show is so cheap you’d think it was owned by British Petroleum.

Not only do I not want to hear any of the Idols sing any of these songs, I don’t want to hear anybody, at all, sing any of these songs ever again.

And Jamie Foxx again? What’s he got to sell this time? I suppose he wasn’t the *worst* mentor I’ve ever seen, plenty of competition there, but he definitely wasn’t the best either, and do they really have to recycle mentors too?

  • oceana

What an awful list. Geez what is wrong with the producers.

I’m glad that my favorite 4 are in the top 4. I trust that they’ll find something to sing but it won’t be easy.

  • Jae

Why are they bringing Jamie back??? I like some variety in the mentors. Not at all excited about Jamie coming back. Oh well. this show is so boring anyway. Last night was awful. I just want to know who wins ofr the sake of knowing who wins. Hopefully these songs will work out ok.

  • bean99

Casey doing “Mrs Robinson” would be hilarious. I could see Lee doing “Eye of the Tiger”. Maybe Mike should do “Kiss from a Rose” because it would at least feel more current than what he usually does. No idea for Crystal.

  • movin2thabeet

Uggghh. Absolutely rubbish list – heavy laden with cheese. I can’t believe, with falling audiences, this is the best they can come up with. Are they trying to kill off the show altogether? Even for the older demographic such as myself, this is totally trite, corny stuff. Where is the creativity on this show? Out the window? Lipsynching group songs, diminished choices of cheesy songs, retreading mentors – all signs of limited imagination and risk-taking. It sure doesn’t help AI’s reputation among real music lovers any. I hate to see such an incredible platform like this show make such rotten decisions.

Here’s hoping this group of strong individuals fights to get songs not on the list approved. At the very least, Jamie can help them make the songs current. I think Mike has to be very careful here as he already has the reputation of cheesing up songs and I don’t think folks want to hear a triple serving of corn, cheese and ham. From watching the AI videos of him, its clear he puts alot of thought and hard work into the songs, so with Jamie’s help, I think chances are good that he’ll choose wisely.

  • http://crystalfans.com/ Zsus

    Hate the list.

I would love for Crystal to do “Summertime,” but the way the judges, particularly Simon, are obsessed with finding fault with her, I fear they’ll whine that “Fantasia did it better.” I’d also love for her to do “Moon River,” but the judges will call it “sleepy.” And, of course, she could do the Eva Cassidy version of “Over the Rainbow,” but again with the “sleepy” critiques. So, I’m stumped.

I wonder if they’re doing the duets, again.

  • tierbee

Bah, that list. There are so many great movie songs and we get… Velveeta fest?

Please nobody sing that damn Titanic song. PLEASE.

  • tierbee

Though I must admit I might die laughing if someone did “Footloose.” They would have to do the little Kevin Bacon dance, though.

  • calimari

Each idol should do 2 songs by now, but with that list, no way. Very few songs I’m even interested in hearing.

  • sunny2

Does AI no realise that movies made in this century have soundtracks too? Wow, this season just keeps getting worse.

If Casey was smart he’d try to get permission to sing one of those songs Jeff Bridges sang in Crazy Heart.

  • sr4mjc

Crystal will do the Janis Joplin version of Summertime. She doesn’t watch Idol so she probably doesn’t know about Fantasia’s success with it.

I love me some cheese, but I think I’ll need a lactaid for this episode. And Jamie Foxx creeps me out.

  • sunny2

I’ve always wanted to see a Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 week… Lee singing Bright Lights would be perfection.

    Here’s Kris singing Bright Lights.Amazing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX5ASTH9WHc

  • jinxx315

Can’t stand Foxx, he is so full of himself. The past 2 Theme Weeks have been totally boring. Cmon…the music of Shania Twain? lol. Now Cinema? Yuck. I miss Rock Week.

  • hcpoirot

The songs list are really lousy. Tons of boring ballad. Are this the best of the cinema songs? Idol really getting more and more predictable in themes and list of songs.

No wonder the ratings are going down.

  • JW

Everything I Do I Do It For You – Bryan Adams
Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman – Bryan Adams
Up Where We Belong – Joe Cocker & Jennifer I am not familiar with this but Cocker caught my attention.

After Jealous Guy and Don’t, I can see Casey with either of the above. I like the idea of Ms. Robinson for Kara. :) Only if he makes a point of dedicating it to her. :) Bluesy Summertime could work too. Or Footlose. I think Casey does best when he pours soul and emotion into song and that is what I would like to see.

Crystal sounded great in the group songs and so did Casey. Hmmmmm…they could be my top two picks.

  • JW

No wonder the ratings are going down.

I think the ratings are going down due to lack of talent this year and the themes are very boring. I miss Paula and Kara is so irritating. Simon even seems tame for the most part with the exception of his dressing down Casey. Guess all of that backfired as Casey wasn’t in the bottom two. I think America got it right as he has pulled off a few really good performances and I can’t necessarily say the same for Aaron and Big Mike has to go IMO.

  • LaRue

Why are they bringing Jamie back???

He’s signed with J Records, which has a connection to Idol. He also has a new single and upcoming album. Cross-promotion all the way with this one.

That list is slim pickings, yipes. They couldn’t get 50-60 songs cleared? Idol is really getting chintzy and they make it worse by letting see the pre-approved list beforehand. I know they don’t care about the contestants, but they should care about how silly they make themselves look with these retreads–thin retreads at that.

  • koshka

Why don’t they have nursery rhyme week and I can get my daughter’s teachers to come in and mentor.

This list, the mentor and the theme SUCKS!

  • BootStar

I know Lee is the obvious choice for “Mrs. Robinson,” but I would so love to see Casey sing it to directly to Kara. Better yet, Lee and Casey should duet on it.

Also, I think Casey could rock out Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero.” And I know it’s old-fashioned, but Crystal could have a “moment” with “Evergreen.”

  • BootStar

on the results recap thread, someone suggested Casey do “A Weary Kind”, from the movie Crazy Hearts. That won this year’s Oscar for Best Original song.

Actually, I forgot this, but early in the season, when Casey first caught my attention, I thought he resembled a young Jeff Bridges and speculated he might end up being popular since Crazy Heart resonated with a lot of folks. I’d love for Casey to sing something from the movie. “Fallin’ & Flyin’” would be fun too.

  • koshka

Speaking of moments … I’d love to hear what moments people have had to date.

For me the only one has been Casey’s Jealous Guy. Lee had a 1/2 moment with the Boxer, as did Soibhan with Paint it Black.

I’m just not impressed this year. :(

  • BootStar

Crystal should see about getting “The Scarlet Tide” cleared. Elvis Costello wrote that and it was in Cold Mountain, I think. GORGEOUS song and another HUGE potential moment. I flove Alison Krauss. Her “Baby Mine” is awesome too (from Dumbo). That would be suh-weet too!

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

Speaking of moments … I’d love to hear what moments people have had to date.

Crystal… Me and Bobby McGee or People Get Ready or CCR or just about anything she’s done .. i love love love this kind of artist!!

  • BootStar

I’m not a huge Lee fan but I think he could slay “Streets of Philadelphia.” Or Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.”

Do the songs have to be written for the movie or just part of the soundtrack?

Oh, lordy, Big Mike should sing SUPERFLY!!!

  • jericho

Jamie Foxx again???!!! WTF?! I disliked him the first time. Just when I thought this show couldn’t get worse they do this. And that list? Really? Bryan Adams? Kenny Loggins? It’s like an episode of the Twilight Zone or a crazy assed version of Groundhog Day, where I’m stuck in an AI hell loop, with crappy songs, bad singers and obnoxious judges.

  • jericho

I think the group song should be The Rose, but the “happy hands” version from Napoleon Dynamite.

  • tinawina

Speaking of moments … I’d love to hear what moments people have had to date.

Hmmm.. Well in my corner of the world, I heard chatter about:

Crystal – People Get Ready and As Long As I See The Night (? – first song back after she was sick)

    Casey – Jealous Guy

    Mike – Woman’s Work

Siobhan – Wicked Game, Think, Paint It Black

Strangely nobody as said anything to me about Lee.

For me personally, Jealous Guy, House of the Rising Sun, People Get Ready and Woman’s Work are the ones I remember the most so far.

  • TankieGirlie

The only song that doesn’t make me GAG is Don’t You Forget About Me

Jamie Foxx… wasn’t he kind of a dick last time?

I am relieved Aaron can’t go all cheesefest on us (sorry Aaron fans)

I’m starting to HATE the Idol Song Picker Person…truly

  • angela

OK, Big Mike, I know it’s very tempting, but please stay away for “when a man loves a woman”, ppl will start inviting you to sing at their weddings for real…

Wasn’t Bon Jovi supposed to be on next week?

  • mymagoogle

Crystal would nail “Let the river run”. it could be a moment for her.

and big mike’s “womens work” made me cry like a baby, the rest has been meh.

  • will

Wasn’t Bon Jovi supposed to be on next week?

He’s performing on the results show.

  • Nina1

I can picture Crystal singing a very good “Summertime” and catching a lot of criticism for it.

  • Suzanne

Maybe this is just the list of cleared songs, but the idols can ask for other songs? I’m proud of AI that they don’t have Against AllOdds on the list. But, man, there are a lot of oversung songs of the 80s on there.

  • ahorseofcourse

    What a crap-tastic list…BLAH!

Lee – I must hear you sing something by Bruce Sprinstein, preferably “I’m on Fire”

However from this list I think he should sing either Don’t You Forget About Me – Simple Minds OR Kiss From a Rose – Seal, I would even be okay with Mrs Robinson – Simon & Garfunkle

Casey – Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman – Bryan Adams OR Up Where We Belong – Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes

Crystal – Summertime – Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong OR Let the Riverrun – Carly Simon

Mike – Endless Love – Lionel Richie & Diana Ross OR Over the Rainbow – Judy Garland, I know this is an odd choice but I think he could pull it off.

  • Nina1

Hmmm. I see a lot of people like Crystal doing “Summertime.” The judges will say it’s sleepy, for sure, if she does. She needs something uptempo, at least in part.

Idol should seriously invest some solid cash in the music. They can’t have performers sing the same songs year after year and be current. The show is making itself irrelevant and carrying this group of contestants with it.

  • water_sprite

Has “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” been done on Idol before? That’s not even the best song from Coyote Ugly (hands down for “But I Do Love You”) but I think Lee could pull it off really well.

  • Nina1

And Jamie? Sing the dumb booze song and you’ll owe me a new teevee, I just might hurl everything in the room.

  • TankieGirlie

I just saw “I’m Alright” on there

Praise Dog!! one frakken up beat song!

  • Nostradamas

Theme nights must die……….NOW! Usually when you polish a turd, you just get a shiney turd……

Top 4 time is for us to see what kind of artist these kids might be…..not to rehash tired old craptastical songs to bore us to death…… and they wonder why ratings are down…sounds like those who are leaving AI aren’t even trying this year…

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

I would love getting into the top 4,3 you would have to do an “original song” (either written by the contestant or collaberation with the contestant) instead of all this rehashing of tired music done to death(good in its day ..but a new day is here)… cuz really until the top 2 “america” doesn’t see what a contestant can do with a song “never heard before”! (then they get rainbows n puppies and no boundaries lol)

  • AnninSD

OK should I even watch or will it be this:

    Jamie Foxx Again
    Movie Music Theme Again
    TV show Director from hell
re-treads of the same comments from all four judges
tiny host with ‘shatner’ like phrasing
looks like a song list comprised from past seasons

Crystal will sing on par – always very good
Lee will NOT repeat last week – good/ok
Casey will bleat unless he sings a ‘talking’ song – won’t compare to jealous guy
Mike will sing like he’s Ruben – w/spot on vocals but OTT ‘tude

OK I’ll watch just to see if I’m right

  • alxsavage

I don’t remember anything relevant coming from Jamie Foxx last season, except from the fact that he offered some kind of future collaboration to Kris after telling him that he was his fave.

Apart from that, it was all about him trying to keep his cool attitude the whole time.

  • calimari

I’ll be anything they pick Motown for top 3. Just to stick w/ rehashing old themes…

  • Scorpiosue1102

This list of “movie” songs just sucks. I’m sorry, but not every movie has sappy pop songs in it. For every song from “Dirty Dancing” there are good songs from High Fidelity, Go, Once, Good Will Hunting, Reservoir Dogs or even Hair. The fans don’t want boring. The producers of American Idol are their own worst enemies. How many years are we going to have crappy themes?

  • frazzledrazz

Crystal… Me and Bobby McGee or People Get Ready or CCR or just about anything she’s done .. i love love love this kind of artist!!

IA with this so much… This season of Idol has been great for me because I don’t listen to the most mainstream music, so its nice to finally people on the show (who last more than a few rounds) that their style of music directly appeals to me. I know that the whole Justin Bieber, Kesha, Gaga thing is really popular now but there isn’t much substance or depth to it, which is something that I enjoy in music (ok I lie… Gaga is growing on me LOL). This goes for both Crystal and Lee… their pre-idol stuff is amazing, not like the songs from the crap themes that the producers have been forcing on the contestants this season.

  • MaryS-NJ

Ugh. Movie week – at top 4? And do I understand correctly that the Idols will all get to sing only 1 song each and no duet?

This list is so played out. These songs are so overdone and so cheesy that the judges can only complain about lousy song choices.

And Jamie Foxx? What’s he selling this year? Seriously, the only mentor who didn’t come on to sell a new album or other product was Shania, and I would enjoyed hearing her perform. Why don’t they just do away with the singing competition and just have the Idols do product placement spots for all the guests and mentors that have stuff to sell – interspersed by endless judges’ babbling.

  • Reflections On Life

the theme had potential but the set list is the worst of all time!

FWIW i liked jamie foxx last year as mentor. he’s a triple-threat performer (comedian, actor, singer – tv & big screen) so that makes him a well-qualified mentor. he also seems intelligent, confident, and musically knowledgeable. (plus i find him hott!) but his al-al-al-alcohol song was just stupid.

Crystal – Evergreen: crystal needs a song to show off her power-voice again after 2 weeks of subtler performances. plus she can’t sound like she’s giving us the same old thing as before these past 2 wks. i think she could impress with Evergreen, putting her spin on it, but bring out some big-diva notes. that would make the song interesting and show a slightly diff side of her. summertime would be too similar to prior performances, and maybe compared negatively to fantasia. mrs robinson would be perfect vocals but strategic suicide, again considered too “subdued”. other than that, i don’t think crystal’s good at singing crappy songs, and all these songs are crappy.

Casey – Into The West: casey actually is a perfect fit for over half of these songs, but it’ll be difficult for him to not sound karaoke or lesser-bryan-adams on them. casey’s goat-vibrato lends itself well to emotionally in-the-moment melancholy & regretful songs – hence his success with jealous guy. into the west is lesser-known amongst this list, sung by a woman but gender-neutral, plus slow & melancholy for casey to grab us emotionally.

Mike – Let the River Run: this song is fairly gospelly, has components of african beats and rock guitar, but somewhat uptempo. it’s inspirational, and mike could throw some big notes into it. mike could strip it down OR play it with full arrangement (or start out stripped down and end it full-bore) and do fine. again, it’s a lesser known song, so he could totally own it. More obvious choice would be Kiss from a Rose, but it would sound so been-there-done-that and lesser-Seal. Same with Aquarius (too show-boaty). But I also like Over the Rainbow for Mike – he glory-note it like a male Whitney, and he hasn’t really shown us his power-vocals yet.

Lee – Endless Love or A Whole New World: hasn’t lee only sung mid-tempo songs so far? is it time for him to do a ballad? he could speed up the ballad a bit if needed to. it would showcase his awesome tone and help him connect with the audience more. he could put a guitar spin on either song. he could pull a david-cook on a whole new world. hearts could swoon.

  • lucy

Seriously, the only mentor who didn’t come on to sell a new album or other product was Shania,

Actually, this spring she began actively promoting herself again, for the first time in quite a while, in connection with a new reality tv show that she’s launching at the beginning of 2011. It’s called Why Not? With Shania Twain and it’ll be on Oprah’s network. I think it’s intended to chart her intended crawl back to top-level fame. …. So the Idol gig was definitely part of that — giving her some big-time network tv exposure so when the show comes round fewer people will say Shania Who?

    So they’re all doing promotion.

  • Patroo

Adam Lambert – Time For Miracles

How cool would it be if they could clear it, and somebody actually picked it? =P

  • lucy

Adam Lambert – Time For Miracles

That would be kind of fun, but since it was written after 1985, ain’t gonna happen, lol.

  • longsong

OHMYHECK, Please God, let Casey pick “Kiss From A Rose” my FAVORITE Constantine performance! Tha’s right! I SAID IT.

  • druzilla

What an evil song list… so many karaoke traps… Can we all pray none of the contestants go for obvious?

Crystal doing Aquarius, Mike doing Endless Love, Kiss from a Rose or even Arthur’s Theme, Lee doing anything Bryan Adams, Casey doing Kenny Loggins

Just seeing the title “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” has me having flashbacks to goat girl Carmen Rasmusen, season 2. *shudders*

Are they doing TWO songs finally? The duets last year were only half good.

I’m tired of Jamie Foxx. He was useless last season and then he offensively parodied Ray Charles in the disaster that was “We Are The World 2010.” Can his ego and Mike fit in the same room?

  • longsong

Wait a minute! Do they have to pick TWO songs from this tiny mostly suckalicious list?!!!! Oh, the HUMANITY!!

  • Suzanne

I don’t remember anything relevant coming from Jamie Foxx last season, except from the fact that he offered some kind of future collaboration to Kris after telling him that he was his fave.

I thought Jaime Foxx was a good mentor last year. Seemed to spend quite a bit of time with the idols and gave meaningful feedback. But last year, he mentored when it was down to everyone being great. Let’s see how he likes the idols this year.

Wait a minute! Do they have to pick TWO songs from this tiny mostly suckalicious list?!!!! Oh, the HUMANITY!!

I wonder what they’ll do. The judges do like to yammer on, and after the show last night, it’s clear that AI is becoming quite a show of fillers. Maybe they’ll just do one song each (which would suck).

That list is awful, btw. Let the River Run, Don’t You Forget About Me, and It Might Be You (b/c I so love that song) are the only songs I want to hear at all. And most of them I royally do not want to hear.

I think that, if more than 50% of the list contains songs on most Karaoke systems, then it isn’t a valid list and they should produce another list.

  • jujumagumbo

Seriously do the producers have ANY strategy at all for picking theme nights? This could’ve been OK, but it looks like the contestants have to choose between a)horribly cheesy b)slow and boring c)done to death on idol, or some combination. Mike will probably pick all 3. This would’ve been a great time for a rock night (even though that would follow last year’s sequence exactly),

DeWeezy should do Iris from the Goo Goo Dolls or Over the Rainbow from Judy Garland. If he sings Kiss From A Rose I’ll kill him. If BM sings Eye of the Tiger I’ll love him forever. LOL

ETA: I bet DeWeezy will sing Mrs Robinson. You know he loves him some S&G.

  • irby

Are we sure they’re limited to this list? I would LOVE to hear Casey sing a George Strait song from the “Pure Country” soundtrack. “I Cross My Heart” is the best-known of them, but he’d also sound really good on “The King of Broken Hearts” or “When Did You Stop Loving Me.”

From the list, I think Casey or even Lee (although I’m not on the Lee bandwagon) would sound good on the Bryan Adams songs, and Casey doing “It Might Be You” could be nice. Lee and “Iris” makes sense, but I can see pitch issues galore with that one. Mike would cheese the Bryan Adams songs up too much, but I could see him doing a nice job on something a little sweeter, like “It Might Be You” or “Arthur’s Theme.” I’m also imagining him doing “Take My Breath Away” and it sounding good. As for Crystal, as out of her “wheelhouse” as it is, I could see her doing “What a Feeling (Flashdance)” and making it work. I know this sounds unexpected, but the lyrics are nice, and if it were stripped of the dance beats I really think it could work.

  • mozart4898

ETA: I bet DeWeezy will sing Mrs Robinson. You know he loves him some S&G.

If he does, then he’d better knock it out of the park or else he’s REALLY risking “sounding the same” by picking the same artists’ songs twice in the season. I really think Mrs. Robinson actually fits Casey quite well (and not just saying that in relation to Kara…I don’t exactly get what that has to do with her calling his goat vibrato out).

The thought of them being able to clear other songs would be great but if we’re getting into that it’ll be impossible to guess, lol.

“Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me.”

  • cinel22

I can’t think of a word to describe how sucktacular this list is.

I’d like to hear Lee sing You’ll Be in My Heart. If he could go off the list I’d like to hear him sing I’m Still Here from Treasure Planet. I love that song.

I already know Mike will sing Endless Love. Casey could sing Can’t Fight the Moonlight. Crystal could sign Let the River Run.

So the list expanded by 16 songs. I would love for Crystal to sing Purple Rain, and I have a feeling someone picked it for it to now show up on the list because Prince is so protective of his songs

  • kcostell

Any contestant who sings Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” (a new addition to the list) will have my votes for the rest of the season.

  • ptslittlecomment

    Duets according to Crystal!

  • http://onlinepastrychef.wordpress.com/ onlinepastrychef

Sounds like the theme is Cheese Week. Ick.

  • Q3

IMO – another boring theme and another dated song list. And a ton of boring, or just uncool songs.

If anyone does “Jai Ho” or “Gangsta’s Paradise” I will fall over laughing. And no one is gonna pick “Jailhouse Rock” since they passed on it on Elvis week.

I think that Big Mike could do something with “Summertime”.

Lee – could do a great job with “Iris”.

Crystal – I would love to hear her sing “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” — anything from a “great” movie like Glitter just needs to be sung!

Casey – I would love to hear him do “Purple Rain” — something like the Darius Rucker version – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYNuGrvsGns

And MJ ITA – death to anyone who picks Bohemian Rhap, Falling Slowly –

I would add to the do not pick list: Over the Rainbow, Evergreen, My Heart Will Go On — and a few other songs on the list that require a 2+ octave range with control. Cause no one left on this show really should to there.

Plus — who really wants to hear someone on Idol sing Ghostbusters?

  • sleeptalker

Theme from Caddyshack?!?! hahaha…please dress Big Mike up like the dancing gopher. i don’t think i could take him any less seriously than I already do.

I totally want someone to do Lose Yourself…I just do. But I don’t think it would do anyone any favors unless they got super creative.

I know a lot of people are banking on Lee or Casey to do Iris…but I would love to see Crystal make something of it.

  • hypnoticwhisper

I really want to hear the Ghostbusters theme HAHAHA.

  • idolbeat

Omigosh! GAME ON! I am calling “Purple Rain” or “Live and Let Die” for Casey but will totally freak out if he gets “Purple Rain!”

  • JW

    Purple Rain for Casey!!!!!!

  • cassx

I agree, anyone who does Lose yourself by eminem is my new favorite, no matter what XD But Lee should do an acoustic version, I would die.

  • Reflections On Life

Ummm… how does someone “sing” Gonna Fly Now (Theme From Rocky) – Bill Conti? Isn’t that an instrumental, save for the background singers chanting “gonna fly now” in the chorus?

  • Q3

Gonna Fly Now is the choice for someone who can’t remember lyrics — 9 lines!

    Trying hard now
    it’s so hard now
    trying hard now

    Getting strong now
    won’t be long now
    getting strong now

    Gonna fly now
    flying high now
    gonna fly, fly, fly…

Here it is — lyrics start at :52 — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyeCdbMUGbQ

Maybe someone can do a mash-up of this and Flashdance.

  • Nina1

This would’ve been a great time for a rock night

Sure would. These songs will be very difficult for some, almost all, contestants. After listening to the Darius Rucker version of “Purple Rain”, I decided the only contestant who chooses it should be one who really wants to go home. Oy, these are just rough. A lot of “sleepy” or boring.

  • Q3

Making a prediction about this week — more bad ratings. This theme and song list is not good — I agree with renaming it “Cheese Week”.

Perhaps Ghostbusters is the way to go. At least it would be funny.

    RIDICULOUS SONGS ON THE LIST.

WHo is going to sing — Ghostbusters ? Is that even a song ? It’s a chant.

And honestly, are they going to ask these kids to learn Hindi by performing JAI HO ? Is the one who performs this expected to do their pointy Indian dance while singing this ? Where are Anoop and Sanjaya when you need them ?

This night is simply designed to make it look like a train wreck.

  • poohbear

Okay well who ever said that AI is cutting edge. It’s a totally cheesy television show. Case in point, the sappy Disney group numbers the poor contestants are required to participate in every week. And the choices of songs every week. The cheese factor is HUGE!

That being said and surrendering to the Velveeta, I would like to see Casey and Crystal sing the schmaltzy “I’ve Had The Time of My Life” or “Up Where We Belong” and Casey’s solo be Elvis’s Jailhouse Rock. Okay, I’m shielding myself from the Boo’s…

  • connie0128

Jedward did Ghostbusters on X-Factor – it was so bad it was hilarious. Don’t think this bunch could pull it off, though.

  • oceana

I’d like to see Casey to Falling Slowly.

  • Lulu2

If you don’t have good material, you don’t have a good show. Show biz 101. The lazy producers have been getting by on, at first, the novelty and popularity of the show. Until Season 7 and 8, it was running on empty, as if the show were entitled to an audience, as an ironclad annual tradition, like the finally-dead (I guess) Miss America contest. The show is chugging to a stop and it’s all the producers’ fault. The contestants this year are talented enough. they need better material and the audience does not want to hear the same old, awful songs over and over. Get better songs on the lists and retire songs done more than once on the show. Do not allow the same song to be repeated within the same three year period. Shake things up. To heck with middle America. Put some really wild, more contemporary songs on the list. Sublime, Nine Inch Nails. Something. Adam said that the contestants needed to wake up. I say the producers do.

  • hicksaholic

I’d like to see Casey do Jailhouse Rock and dance/run through the audience a la Taylor. At least it would liven things up.
Don’t you just have a mental picture of Casey doing that?
