WOW, that was long, and it took me forever to recap, so much detail packed into 2 hours.  Not to many surprises for me, because I’ve been following the spoilers (which have been right so far) But a couple of disappointments–both Tasha Leighton and Jermaine Purifory should have gone on to the Top 46.  Tim Urban, Haeley Vaughn, and Jermaine Sellers, not so much…

VIDEOS and Recap after the JUMP…

It’s Part 3 of Hollywood week. 71 Idol hopefuls will take the stage for one last chance to impress the judges, and at the end of tonight’s 2 hour episode, a few of the Top 24 contestants will be revealed…The show begins as the contestants are split into 3 rooms.

In Room #1: Casey James, Tim Urban, Tyler Grady, Andrew Garcia, Michelle Delamore, Katelyn Epperly, Jermain Sellers, Siobhan Magnus, Crystal Bowersox, Michael Lynche, Thaddeus Johnson, Tori Kelly, Lilly Scott, Katy Stevens and Todrick Hall

In Room #2: Kia Johnson, Lloyd Thomas, Mary Powers, Hope Johnson, Tisha Holland, Jermaine Purifory, Charity Vance, Tasha Leighton, Bryan Walker and Christian Spear

In Room #3: Shelby Dressel, Haeley Vaughn, Maddy Penrose, Jessica Furney, Chris Golightly, Lacey Brown, John Park, Aaron Kelly, Ashely Rodriguez, Lee Dwyze, Joe Munoz, Janelle Wheeler and Angela Martin

Angela Martin – “American Boy” – Kara mouths “I love her” as Angela sings. Angela feels good about her performance. She breaks down recalling how hard it’s been (Her mom went missing right before Hollywood Week) – VIDEO

Casey James – “Bubbly” by Colbie Cailat – Very nice flip! Clever. – VIDEO

Jermaine Purifory – “Brickhouse” by the Commodores – Really like his vibe – VIDEO

Room 1 contestants:

Jermaine Sellers – “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson – Oversinging ahoy! (Dude is overrated). Now, he’s throwing the band under the bus! And Kara is not happy. – VIDEO

Siobhan Magnus – “In The City” by Stevie Wonder Ellen told her she’s too serious for a 19 year old. So, she sings a fun song? That’s how Ryan describes it. Whatever. Siobhan kills it. – VIDEO

Crystal Bowersox – “If It Makes you Happy” by Sheryl Crow – She plays guitar and harmonica. I like this girl, a lot. – VIDEO

Alex Lambert – He sang “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5 during his Day 1 audition, and he got the “no personality” critique from Simon. He tackled “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz in his final audition, feeling more confident. Alex accompanied himself on ukulele on both tunes. – VIDEO

Michael Lynche – “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz – Great neo-soul vibe. – VIDEO

Todrick Hall – “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz – He’s a bit of a show off, but dude can sang.- VIDEO

Thaddeus Johnson – “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson – His mama is so proud. And in yo face! The band started playing “Bubbly” by mistake. Oops. I’m not bubbly! But I’m a bubbly person, says Thaddeus. Once he’s on the right track, Thaddeus wails and Mama cheers. – VIDEO

Room Two contestants:

Charity Vance – “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles – Nice, but nothing special -  VIDEO

Tasha Leighton – On Day one she sang “The Scientist” by Coldplay, and it was pretty awesome. Love her tone. Beautiful. – VIDEO

Mary Powers – “Hot and Cold” by Katy Perry – She’s way over-confident. She tells Ryan the song is a piece of cake, but it definitely ain’t all that. – VIDEO

Lloyd Thomas – “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson – Becomes really emotional when he talks about his family. – VIDEO

Bryan Walker – The singing policeman is also really confident with his final performance (which we don’t hear for some reason.) – VIDEO

Hope Johnson – “Home” by Daughtry – Whoa off-key! – VIDEO

Room 3 contestants:

Shelby Dressler – “More than a Feeling” by Boston – Gal with the facial paralysis, she had trouble with the lyrics in rehearsal and began to freak out but nailed it when she hit the stage. – VIDEO

Aaron Kelly – “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan – He blows his lyrics on stage. Shouldn’t he be eliminated? – VIDEO

Ashley Rodriguez – “Battlefield” by Jordin Sparks – Ashley is already a pro. – VIDEO

Lee Dwyze – “You Found Me” by the Fray – VIDEO

Joe Munoz – “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson – VIDEO

Haeley Vaughn – by Jason Mraz – Hm. Her vocals are rough. – VIDEO

All 4 judges are present when Ellen delivers the news to Room 1 that they are THROUGH. Lilly Scott, Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche, Thaddeus Johnson, Katy Stevens and Tyler Grady are through to the next round – VIDEO

All 4 judges deliver the news to Room 2. Simon delivers bad news brusquely, Room 2 is cut. then tells them to give themselves a round of applause. Well, they do, but they mostly cry. Saying goodbye to: Mary Powers, Charity Vance, Bryan Walker, Christian Spear, Lloyd Thomas and Hope Johnson. - VIDEO

Randy and Kara deliver the good news to Room 3, they move on to the next round. The doors open and both rooms celebrate together. Janelle Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez, John Park, Angela Martin, Jessica Furney and Shelby Dressel move on. – VIDEO

46 contestants have made it to the next round. Now it’s time to cut to the Top 24. Oh wow. No Mansion? No special chair episode? The Top 24 will be revealed in the auditorium of the Kodak theater.

Contestants are in a holding room and take a long walk to sit in front of the judges.

Michael Lynch – TOP 24 – Simon tells him that the panel wondered if he had enough confidence, but he proved himself at the end. He’s through. NOT disqualified. So much for stupid rumors. – VIDEO

Didi Benami – “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan – TOP 24 – Simon tells her she was not consistent but she is put through anyway. The decision was unanimous. – VIDEO

Katelyn Epperley – “Bubbly” by Colbie Callait – TOP 24 – Ellen tells her she’s not going to make her wait…yet she does make her wait! Ha ha. And, Katelyn is through. – VIDEO

Shelby DresslerCUT – Shelby wants the spot so bad. Randy says she had some high and low points, and that unfortunately, she’s going home. Randy encourages her to come back. – VIDEO

Aaron KellyTOP 24 – Aaron screwed up his words during group rounds. – VIDEO

Todrick HallTOP 24 – Says he’s a dancer, and has never had a voice lesson in his life. He worked with Fantasia in Color Purple, and she gave him advice. Kara says, simply “Yes.” – VIDEO

Jessica FurneyCUT – “If It Makes You Happy” – Randy says he won’t delay it…but she didn’t make it this time. She begins to beg. “You have no idea what I can do…I know I can do better…I have this in me..I can do this.” They let her go on and on for awhile. Simon tells her they are NOT going to change their minds. Simon says she didn’t sing well enough. Jessica complains that she lost her voice. Ellen tells her that it’s not the end of her life. It’s just one no, she says. – VIDEO

  • rayni

Uhhhh – rayni luvs casey james.

  • rayni

And wasn’t Angela Martin singing a shade under the note? She was deliciously jazzy smooth but a smidge flat. Sad cause I really liked her.

  • will

Ryan sure is making it sound like all of the Top 24 will be revealed tonight.

  • jammasta

Excited to see Angela and Casey tonight. I love the songs American Boy and Bubbly.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

I don’t understand why they would only reveal a FEW of the Top 24 and not wait til the chair episode…confused.

  • rayni

Hey Siobhan! Gimme that note girl. Loved her!

  • gangreen29

I love love love love Crystal. LOVE.

  • cookcricket

    gangreen29:

I love love love love Crystal. LOVE.

    Yep!

  • manny

Crystal is my girl! Love her.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

I like crystal’s voice, not her.I want anglea, though she probably not.I already looked at spoilers though

I like all the guys and Siobhan

But I REALLY don’t like Casey James

And shame on you whoever u are for throwing teh band under the bus

  • http://twitter.com/maxsmom61 CathyMK

I hate it when they tell people to act “young”, by which they mean “perky”. Overly perky people get on my nerves.

  • Miss Chaos

Love Crystal, wish her teeth werent so yellow. LOVE Siobhan, dont want to say who she reminds me of. Where are the cute guys, well any good guys, altho like Alex Lambert.

  • rayni

Todrick Hall – “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz – He’s a bit of a show off, but dude can sang.

For real! I didn’t want to like him but he was really good.

  • Miss Chaos

How many Man in the Mirror was song, I think its at 4.

  • http://twitter.com/maxsmom61 CathyMK

I hope to never hear Man in the Mirror, I’m Yours, or Bubbly again.

    Still loving Crystal and Casey.

  • Gracie77

If there is any justice in the world, I will not have to see that Mary chick on my TV after tonight. Eesh. She’s annoying, and she’s not even good enough to be so entitled. Blech.

  • Mtlfan

    Love Siobhan and Crystal!!

  • will

Now that Aaron forgot his lyrics, we’ll see how Simon sticks to the bogus “forget the words and you’re out” rule.

  • Miss Chaos

My Gosh, another Man in the Mirror, dont they all know what each other is singing?

  • JenOhio

I really enjoyed Aaron Kelly, even though he had difficulty remembering the words. I think he has wonderful potential.

MJ – I agree, Mary is coming across too over confident and this very well could work against her. JMHO

  • Hope07

If there is any justice in the world, I will not have to see that Mary chick on my TV after tonight. Eesh. She’s annoying, and she’s not even good enough to be so entitled. Blech.

I’ve got to agree with you, she’s just obnoxious. Simon always seems to want a rocker chick in the top 24 though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets through. Love Casey, and others, but haven’t kept track of most names. Love, love, love Crystal…her voice, and her overall vibe. So far, she’s got it all for me.

  • cookcricket

They showed a different Kris Allen commercial!!! :D

  • Mtlfan

geez.. there was 5 MITM?? hahaha

i think room 3 is going home!

  • Mtlfan

They showed a different Kris Allen commercial!!!

    which one did they show?

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

I like aaron and Janell (bad song though)

Room one is definetly staying(yes, I saw the spoilers, but I DONT REMEMBER THEM) :)

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

Yeah mary’s rude-I don’t think it was just group week anymore

  • tripp_ncwy

They showed a different Kris Allen commercial!!!

    which one did they show?

    Leaves!!!!!

  • will

Whoa, I wouldn’t want to be in the same room as Mary when she finds out she’s getting cut. She’ll might go postal.

  • Miss Chaos

I think Room 2 is gone.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

    I want hope to stay!!

  • s0x_prisoner

haha nice, we finally get to see Joe Munoz.

cool that andrew garcia sang Chasing Pavements! love that song.

  • cookcricket

    which one did they show?

    The leaves video game. Hee!

  • JudyL

I have a feeling Haeley will stay no matter how badly she sings.
And that Mary P. will stay no matter how much I hate her.

  • shell29

    Room two is toast.

  • cookcricket

Are they going to switch some people in rooms?

    ETA: Nvm.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

I’m sad hope left, but happy Janelle and Aaron made it through

Then what will tomorrow be? I expect a ‘get to know you’ which would be awesome

  • Jx223

IMO,Hayley is not a good singer.

I haven’t seen the spoilers for the Top 24, but I hope that for the boys, that Casey, Andrew, Tyler, Michael Lynche, and Lee Dwyze make it through. I also wouldn’t mind if red-headed Luke made it through. For the girls I wouldn’t mind seeing Tasha and Janell make it through to the Top 24.

  • MawMaw

IF they name all the top 24 tonight, what will they do tomorrow night? LOL

  • rayni

    Jx223:
    02/16/2010 at 9:09 pm
IMO,Hayley is not a good singer.

    IMO too.

  • will

What a surprise Mike made it! I’m shocked!

  • gangreen29

i love Haeley. She isn’t the best singer, but she lights up the stage and I am drawn to her.

  • MawMaw

If they take that long with each of them, we won’t know the top 24 for a month. And I’m also not impressed with Haeley.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

YAY I WAS ROOTING FOR BIG MIKE!!!!

*I’m going to try and stop being a posting ho*

  • JudyL

I am probably going to hell for even asking this, but is there a noticeable inconsistency in Shelby’s facial paralysis? I hope it is my imagination but I have to ask.

Yeah, Mary is gone! Haeley better improve, quick.

  • JenOhio

So happy Mike made it. I am a sucker for his story. LOL>

  • s0x_prisoner

I hope tomorrow will be a Meet the Top 24 special like SYTYCD did with the Top 20. That would be nice!

  • will

If they take that long with each of them, we won’t know the top 24 for a month.

Or at least till tomorrow. They’re definitely stretching it over two nights.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

    I agree gangreen

  • shell29

Haeley seems like a sweet girl but yeah, she’s not a great singer. Her final audition was rough IMO. On the other hand, that hasn’t seemed to stop some of the successful folks in the music biz these days.

  • jtgraffix

they’re probably gonna reveal half of the top 24 and do the other half tomorrow. hopefully they give each contestant respectable face time :/

  • will

Didi is too fragile for show-biz.

  • rayni

    Didi! Yay!

  • auntieaimee

Didi, stop frigging crying. It’s annoying.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

    I <3 didi she's my fave

  • Miss Chaos

I wonder how many of these will fall apart in the next week or so, they all seem so good, then some how they just turn into people we have never seen.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

Didi, stop frigging crying. It’s annoying.

LOL! It was like Katherine of this past season of So You Think You Can Dance, but I loved her like I love Didi :)

  • will

Michael Lynch – TOP 24 – Simon tells him that the panel wondered if he had enough confidence, but he proved himself at the end. He’s through. NOT disqualified. So much for stupid rumors.

MJ I agree that he has not been DQ’d, but the rumor was he was DQ’d after he made the Top 24, so the fact that he was put through tonight isn’t in itself proof the rumor is false. Did that make any sense?

  • cookcricket

Did Simon say, “that was the wrong decision” after they told Shelby no?

  • shell29

I like Shelby’s attitude. She took her rejection in stride.

  • windmills

Did Simon say, “that was the wrong decision” after they told Shelby no?

    That’s what I heard too.

  • auntieaimee

THis is funny how they are showing Kara drooling over Casey. She’s such a boob. :)

  • rayni

Aaron kid is an Archuleta wannabe and not as good. I agree with Simon.

  • gangreen29

Something about Aaron Kelly kind of weirds me out..

  • Miss Chaos

Forgets words twice and makes it thru. Well Simon? But I like him. Aaron Kelly that is.

  • gangreen29

Lee sounds like David Cook to me.

  • Jx223

I am glad that Casey made it through. :) . I am also glad that Michael made it through.

  • Miss Chaos

Who does Lee remind me of singing? The lead singer from Creed?? Anyone??

  • iluvai

The Kara gushing over Casey is kind of creepy.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

MJ I agree that he has not been DQ’d, but the rumor was he was DQ’d after he made the Top 24, so the fact that he was put through tonight isn’t in itself proof the rumor is false. Did that make any sense?

It makes sense. But, if he were DQ’s the producers would not be pimping the baby backstory as hard as they have.

  • s0x_prisoner

Aw, Lee Dewyze’s top 24 speech was nice. I’m glad he made it through, his voice is way different than everyone else’s this season.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

I agree aunties Aimee (about Kara being a boob)

I’m so happy Aaron got thru( he’s cute, but I’m not drooling like Kara is)

    I really don’t like Casey

    I don’t like lee

also lee like dewyze like says like like way like too much, yknow?

  • cookcricket

The everyone can talk Kris commercial with AWM! :D

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

I agree aunties Aimee (about Kara being a boob)

I’m so happy Aaron got thru( he’s cute, but I’m not drooling like Kara is)

    I really don’t like Casey

    I don’t like lee
Lee looks like a less fugly gokey w/o glasses

    I heard tht too cookcricket

also lee like dewyze like says like like way like too much, yknow?

  • iluvai

I felt bad for Shelby. She had such a positive attitude.

  • windmills

I worry about the effect the competition’s going to have on Aaron and Didi. It feels like the world’s going to eat them alive especially since neither is consistent and they seem very prone to nerves. It’ll be hard to enjoy them if I’m wondering if there’s a breakdown lurking around the corner.

Pimping Fantasia’s Even Angels for Todrick Hall.

  • bigjr6633

Jermaine Sellers – “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson – Oversinging ahoy! (Dude is overrated).

MJ, Jermaine is not overrated and you keep bringing up oversinging well what did Adam do last year and you loved him. Give him a chance he really does have a great voice!

  • gangreen29

I worry about the effect the competition’s going to have on Aaron and Didi. It feels like the world’s going to eat them alive especially since neither is consistent and they seem very prone to nerves. It’ll be hard to enjoy them if I’m wondering if there’s a breakdown lurking around the corner.

I can see that windmills, but look at Brooke White for example. She was a mess a lot of the times on the show, but I think it the long run it really helped her.

Todrick I think is the most interesting contestant we have seen in awhile. He is talented, but also sooo cocky.

  • will

Jessica please. Don’t humiliate yourself. This is pathetic.

  • auntieaimee

Lee sounds like any cover band singer from the 90s. Sounds really “dated” now.

Also, Kara’s dress is so ugly.

  • gangreen29

At first I was sympathetic towards Jessica, but she lost me half way through.

  • windmills

I can see that windmills, but look at Brooke White for example. She was a mess a lot of the times on the show, but I think it the long run it really helped her.

    You know gangreen29 that’s a good point.

The Jessica scene with the judges didn’t make me cringe as much as I thought it would. She didn’t make a great case for herself. Not impressed by her blaming other people though.

What annoyed me about the Casey and Todrick ones is that they’d started talking to people like Big Mike about what they needed to work on but with those guys, they didn’t show the judges giving them any constructive criticism.

I’d have found Kara’s crush on Casey funnier if not for the Paula-Corey scandal. Then again they probably went there because Kara’s married and not likely to go there.

  • Jx223

I like Lee, I am glad to see him make it through. Now if Tyler, Andrew and Luke get through all the guys, I wanted to make the Top 24 would have made it.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

Simon looked so bored during Jessica furney’s rant lol

Overall I’m very happy with the top
    24

I hope Thaddeus johnson, makes it through, but I don’t think he will.I think it was him crying t the end.he jus seem like a nice guy

Plus,Ellen continues to AMAZE me.she’s perfect..

  • auntieaimee

I’d have found Kara’s crush on Casey funnier if not for the Paula-Corey scandal.

I guess I found it funny because it seemed soooo contrived. He’s not THAT attractive, I mean, come on!

  • sonyab

The beginning: Geez in the beginning of the show I was thinking we aren’t going to hear anybody singing?!!?! Oh good I’m wrong! They showed people singing yay! :)

Jessica Furney: Poor Jessica. :( Yeah judges come on! :( Jessica is only 21? Awww hon! You have your whole life ahead of you! Come back next year! :)

Casey James: Kara has a crush on him. I’m glad Kara didn’t tell him to take his shirt off.

The long walk: What the heck?!!? How come the judges aren’t in that long room!?!?! Go back to that!!

Ellen: I know how it feels. I don’t want you to wait any longer. It’s cruel.

ROFL! And Ellen goes on and on hahahaha.. I love her! :)

  • windmills

I guess I found it funny because it seemed soooo contrived. He’s not THAT attractive, I mean, come on!

Well I think Casey’s pretty hot ;) Though nobody’s hot enough to act the fool for.

They’re kind of pigeonholing him as the hot guy though and he’ll have to prove he has the chops. He’s got potential but he could easily be another Robbie Carrico if he doesn’t bring it.

  • jpfan

Wow, the most boring two hours which would have been a decent one hour show. So much repetition. Absolutely numbing.

I’m getting a slight S7 feel with lots of Brooke White type. Alot of fragile contestants. Simon looks so checked out. I don’t think he enjoys working with Ellen at all.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

I’m getting a slight S7 feel with lots of Brooke White type

    Good-Brooke was my favorite S7

  • gangreen29

Simon looks so checked out. I don’t think he enjoys working with Ellen at all.

Well I love Ellen, and I think she works really well on the show. Maybe that bothers Simon

  • Hope07

Lee sounds like any cover band singer from the 90s. Sounds really “dated” now.

Also, Kara’s dress is so ugly.

I agree with you on both counts! I also really did not like Lee’s version of “you found me” at all.

I’m trying to like Didi, but they just keep repeating about her best friend, and it’s getting tiresome already. It’s going to be hard for me to decide if I like her, while being turned off by the over pimping. I’d love to see these guys start out on a level playing field, at least as far as pimping goes. I know it’ll never happen, but a girl can dream, right?

Last season started out slow for me, but I guess that’s because Kris got so little face time initially. This season, I’m kind of optimistic that it may be a good one, with lots of talent and contestants easy to connect with.

  • sonyab

Oh one other thing…. About Lee Dwyze When Kara went on and on about his lack of confidence and he says he has it. She says everyone wasn’t sure until now that about him making it. Umm Kara? Don’t you mean YOU weren’t sure until now? :)

  • seriously

Dedi looks just like Brooke White to me, and I loved Brooke. She was second only to David Cook for me in S7. So it’s kinda deja vu with her.

Simon has this “I want to get this over with” look on his face. Of course he had that look last year.

I liked Andrew, but I hate the song Chasing Pavements. I’ve got no love for Adelle. at. all.

I hate Kara. She annoys me.

  • cookcricket

I don’t think Lee is all that great. Interesting that they said they had just decided 5 minutes before, was that literal? And if so, who did they decide against?

Kara was not holding back any feelings about Casey James. LOL.

Todrick Hall is very good! I’m honestly not sure how to feel about him.

  • iluvai

I think Ellen is doing a good job. But I don’t feel any chemistry between her and the other judges. I love her and her show, and I love that she loves Adam. But I’m just not sure about her as a judge yet. She’ll prove me wrong! :)

  • savgal

I love Didi, but I hope they don’t overdo the backstory, so that the focus is not on her unique voice. Really like Lee’s voice, reminds me of Kings of Leon lead singer. Probably his and Casey’s are my favorite male voices right now. Kind of surprised they didn’t send Mary Powers through, because she has a good voice and has a strong personality, and would seem to balance out the more fragile types. Of course they (TPTB)are casting the show, so I guess they have the scenarios figured out

  • will

Todrick Hall – TOP 24 – Says he’s a dancer, and has never had a voice lesson in his life.

So why didn’t he audition for SYTYCD instead?

  • SparklesATL

    Kara’s nipples!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agggh! I didn’t need to see those!

  • seriously

So why didn’t he audition for SYTYCD instead?

Because what he didn’t say was he probably sucks hard as a dancer.

  • auntieaimee

I loved Brooke, too. I always found her really charming, but something about Didi just grates. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll warm up to her eventually.

  • jammasta

Although I have hated the ****ing **** out of Todrick right now, I really hope he’s not as much of a diva ass I’m making him out to be, and that if he is, I don’t have to get his effing autograph on the tour, that’ll be so damn awkward. Actually, I’m pretty sure my opinion might change if I do get it. Of course, that’s assuming he can get to the top 10 (which I think is possible, but if he doesn’t learn to show some damn humility any time soon I really hope he doesn’t or I might break some faces).

Don’t ruin me, Todrick, and please learn to not be a diva. I really do think you have a great voice and good ideas, but I care more about your personality right now.

Hoo boy, that was uncharacteristic anger.

On the other hand, I really do like everyone they sent to the top 24 so far. Casey, Aaron, and Didi are bloody awesome. Now here’s hoping them 3 make the tour. And please, Janell and Crystal Bowersox for the tour?

Sucks about Shelby, though. I really thought she was awesome.

  • cookcricket

They’re kind of pigeonholing him as the hot guy though and he’ll have to prove he has the chops. He’s got potential but he could easily be another Robbie Carrico if he doesn’t bring it.

I think Casey is more authentic in his genre than Robbie even began to be. Robbie, just ewwww! JMO.

  • windmills

So far it feels like they’re taking a big chance on some of these top 24 people – Didi and Aaron are not consistent, Lee’s had his off moments, and they could be cannon fodder once the show goes live. Idk if Katelyn’s going to make a big impression live and she might be hurt by the fact that Didi and Janell have gotten a lot more screen time. Big Mike and Casey are the only ones I don’t think’ll get swallowed whole by the top 24 nerves but you never know.

It’s funny to me hearing Aaron mentioned in the same sentence as Archie because I’d probably never had thought of that on my own despite the obvious young guy comparison. Every time Aaron opens his mouth to sing my mind hops immediately to how he Gary LeVoxes EVERY song and that for me is NOT a good thing. But Aaron’s got a nice raw and naturally country instrument if he could just get away from Rascal Flatts. He really needs some years to develop his own style.

cookcricket – IA Casey seems more authentic. I like his style and voice, plus he comes off sincere. I wonder how limited he is, is all and I hope he doesn’t flame out early. I think a lot will depend on him making good song choices and maybe he’s got even more of a voice than I figure.

  • iluvai

I don’t get why they spent so much time on Mary. She wasn’t very interesting, even if she was supposed to be annoyingly entertaining.

  • Little Boy Blue

Lee Dwyze reminds me of Kris Allen.

Casey James reminds me of Bucky Covington.

Didi Benami reminds me of Brooke White.

Aaron Kelly reminds me of Anthony Federov ( and even a little of David Archuleta).

Katelyn Epperley is cannon fodder and will be this year’s Kristy Lee Cook.

  • idolprocrastinator

So far it feels like they’re taking a big chance on some of these top 24 people – Didi and Aaron are not consistent

I know Simon mentioned that Didi wasn’t consistent, but I haven’t seen anything from her to demonstrate inconsistency. Her audition of Hey Jude was solid, and Terrified was spectacular. Maybe her group performance was a bust, but we didn’t see that. I thought her rendition of Angel was pretty emotionally moving.

I’ve seen her compared to Megan Joy and Brooke. I think she has a much stronger voice than either of them. She needs to keep her emotions in check for sure, but she’s definitely one of my early favorites.

  • jga94

I would have preferred Purifoy over Sellers for the Jermaines…I agree with MJ that Sellers is overrated.

I think Aaron’s a good singer…just that there’s nothing in the quality of his tone that stands out.

I am liking Crystal, Didi and Casey (which is surprising).

Big Mike is just okay while you’re hearing him sing but afterwards, I sort of forget about him.Same thing goes with the other blonde girl who got in.

Lee has got a voice that reminds me of Danny Gokey…with a tiny dash of maybe Daughtry.

Todrick? His voice is good but idk, he’s not that memorable for me.

  • Mark

Katelyn Epperley is cannon fodder and will be this year’s Kristy Lee Cook.

Ugh. I hope you’re wrong about that. I don’t think I’d like to see Katelyn make a KLC-type run with a bunch of bad performances. Plus, KLC was funny because her personality, and I ultimately came around to her in a strange way; I can’t see that happening with Katelyn.

  • idolprocrastinator

Lee Dwyze reminds me of Kris Allen.

He sang Ain’t No Sunshine in his audition, but I’m not seeing it. I agree with whoever said Caleb from Kings of Leon, that’s definitely not a bad thing.

Speaking of Kris – some of the Man in the Mirror rendtions from tonight were painful (Jermaine esp.) – Joe Munoz’s was pretty good.

  • jammasta

I prefer Purifory over Sellers but I like both. Sellers has the churchy oversinging and the weird nerdy hip hop look that I don’t really like, but I do like him, I think he’d be a great addition to the top 24. Purifory has a more refined sound to me, I think he’d be more successful.

Holy crap, Siobhan just came on, Holy. Freaking. God. Loved her. She reminds me of a video game character named Makoto from Street Fighter. They look like tough young girls with short hair, and they kinda make the same angry faces.

Crystal Bowersox didn’t blow my mind as much as she did with her Natural Woman performance, but she’s a killer performer.

Alex Lambert seems to be struggling with I’m Yours. Big Mike’s version impressed me more. I actually loved Todrick’s rearrangement, but his vocal wasn’t great at all IMO. He’s not as much of an ass tonight, hopefully he’s growing out of his diva phase. I really do like people with a skill for rearranging and standing out, but him being a diva would negate anything good he ever does.

LOL @ “I’m not Bubbly.” That was hilarious. I liked his performance, but I think he still has a lot of room for improvement.

Missed everyone before Siobhan, though. Ugh.

I’m not seeing any comparison with Kristy Lee Cook in Katelyn. Then again, the only thing I remember about her was how she started really horribly, then picked up excellently (IMO) one week.

    Ain’t No Sunshine</blockquote
I think you mean anal sunshine ;0

  • Mtlfan

I like that they are showing more Hollywood performances of the top 24. It’s a good format, better than the one last year and I like to see more of each before we go to the live show.
Didi and Casey are the ones I like the most of tonight’s episode. Didi seems like twice emotional than Brooke..

  • jammasta

I think you’re confusing Todrick with Jermaine S.

Disappointed that Jermaine P. is in room 2 :( .

Shelby Dressel is pretty hot even with CN VII (cranial nerve 7, her facial nerve) paralyzed. Why am I totally about to cry because she got cut? I felt some tears welling up >_>.

Also, Ryan said “swearing off her NERVES.” *chuckle*.

  • movin2thabeet

Oy. That was a tough slog. The production and editing decisions this season absolutely stink in my opinion. They overplay the backstories at the expense of the actual performances. And what was up with all that repetition of those stories? Very little singing, and way too much filler. Meanwhile, I haven’t seen anyone thats really blown me away. The closest ones, of those we know are through, are big Mike and emotional Didi. I don’t think Kathryn or Aaron deserved to make it into the Top 24. I think they’re in for TV personality dynamics more than anything. Other than that, Kara is being her usual annoying self, Simon is barely there, Randy who? and Ellen is the only breath of fresh air there. Man, I hope this whole season doesn’t play out like this or they’ll lose this long-time viewer.

BTW, I’m so glad that Mary Powers isn’t on the show. You can only plug in so many annoying contestants. From what we could tell, I don’t think Haeley Vaughn is consistent enough to be on the show. And Jannell Wheeler? I don’t think it was just her shot voice. Bad, bad, song choice.

And what was up with all the “I’m Yours” and “Man in the Mirror”. How big a list did they have to choose from?

  • iluvai

Shelby Dressel is pretty hot even with CN VII (cranial nerve 7, her facial nerve) paralyzed. Why am I totally about to cry because she got cut? I felt some tears welling up >_>.

She is so pretty and really good. I felt sad too.

  • jammasta

    Aaron licked his lips, lolarchie.

Too bad he forgot his lyrics, but to be honest I did like his voice and the parts where he DID remember his lyrics, I thought he did deserve to be in the top 24. But as much as a sucker for ballads I am, I sincerely hope he doesn’t turn into the next Archie. I remembered how much the Internet kicked you in the balls if you were an Archie fan.

Loving Ashley’s version of Battlefield, I knew she was a good singer but I think she convinced me here.

Lee DeWyze is alright, but Kris Allen? Nah.

Joe Munoz – best version of Man in the Mirror tonight? I think so.

Haeley – Eep, voice was shot pretty badly. She’s still decent, and I actually liked her song choice for her.

Janell – Oh no, this is kinda dull. I agree Kara, wrong song. I think she deserves another chance.

  • Grammie Kari

I don’t think I have ever seen so many commercials in any two hour Idol show. It was terrible! The contestants, however, were very good. This is probably one of the best group of contestants we have seen in that they can actually sing.

I have less enthusiasm for Katelyn Epperly this time around. Aaron is cute but needs to let loose. Speaking of letting loose, I wish Todrick Hall would just go away. Not even counting his ‘scandal’, just how many contestants have their picture taken with Oprah and appear on Broadway with Fantasia?

I think both Jermaine Sellers and Jermaine Purifory are worthy of TOP 24. Maybe they are too similar? Yes, Joe Munoz did have the best version of “Man in the Mirror” tonight. Cute guy, too.

Kara is so funny, and is finally relaxing and having a good time.

  • will

Didn’t toddrick, tell the band they f**ked up though?..or was that someone else?

    Jermaine Sellers.

  • larc

It makes sense. But, if he were DQ’s the producers would not be pimping the baby backstory as hard as they have.

Unless my memory circuits are screwed up, I think I recall hearing Seacrest say there will be a “shocking elimination” tomorrow night. What could that be? The most shocking thing I can think of now would be for somebody named to the Top 24 tonight to be eliminated (or DQed) tomorrow night.

  • cookcricket

Lee Dwyze reminds me of Kris Allen.

Kris is so much better than this guy from what I’ve seen.

IA Casey seems more authentic. I like his style and voice, plus he comes off sincere. I wonder how limited he is, is all and I hope he doesn’t flame out early. I think a lot will depend on him making good song choices and maybe he’s got even more of a voice than I figure.

Windmills, gotcha. Yes, it will be interesting to see what he can actually bring to the table.

I would have preferred Purifoy over Sellers for the Jermaines…I agree with MJ that Sellers is overrated.

Was Purifoy in room two? If so, yeah, he was good. I was a little disappointed to see that.

  • Grammie Kari

Crystal Bowersox did a good job and may be heading into the TOP 12, as will Casey James. Kara is right, I personally find him to be very attractive.

Poor Ellen’s back. Big Mike should have been warned. He’s a likeable enough guy and I hope to see more growth from him. I am not that impressed with Haeley Vaughn and hope to see more of Paige Miles tomorrow.

I was impressed with Ashley Rodriguez from the beginning and she hasn’t disappointed. There is definitely TOP 12 potential there, too.

I definitely prefer this format more than previous ones.

  • J9BT

“Unless my memory circuits are screwed up, I think I recall hearing Seacrest say there will be a “shocking elimination” tomorrow night. What could that be? The most shocking thing I can think of now would be for somebody named to the Top 24 tonight to be eliminated (or DQed) tomorrow night.”

Well…..that would be shocking. Honestly, when I heard the rumor I figured it had to be true based on commentary made by past contestants’ parents about how they are not allowed to say anything about show results. The newspaper article clearly quoted his Dad as leaking the Top 24 result. BUT (and that’s a big BUT) we didn’t know at that time that Michael Lynche hasn’t spoken to his Dad in 5 yrs and he read his name on an internet spoiler list!

I think the shocking elimination is going to be Angela Martin. I’m not a crier, but I swear I will cry if she gets eliminated tomorrow night. That girl has been through SOOO much and she is actually talented, and cannot try out next year due to the age limit. I like her.

  • jammasta

Why was Shelby being cut incredibly painful for me? I mean, I don’t think she was the best, but I thought she was really good. I hope she comes back next year. Maybe I just feel sorry for her because her face is paralyzed and I find her really beautiful despite that. I didn’t think I’d ever really get sucked into a sob story. Especially not one that deals with LOOKS. But she was really graceful about it. Ouch, though.

I’m kinda happy that Simon said “That was the wrong decision.”

Also, if Angela Martin doesn’t make the top 24, I think I’ll just about die. If she doesn’t make it, dear freaking God I hope she gets signed at least, I think she’s awesome and I really think she needs something to actually be in her favor for once in her life.

I’m having trouble choosing who to be invested in, there’s a lot of people I really like.

Loving Casey and Aaron so far. But my God, I kinda am scared of the way this site could become after the Archie treatment (although I do think Aaron is MUCH different, I imagine he’s gonna get verbally nut checked by a lot of people here like Archie did >_>).

I didn’t really like Lee DeWyze all that much, his voice isn’t that pleasant to me, I’m not seeing Kris Allen much at all. I don’t think he’ll get past top 12, but we’ll see. Certainly wouldn’t mind him proving me wrong.

lols @ Todrick, that fiance bit was funny. Still praying that he loses the arrogance, I kinda am finding him a bit more likable, but he could still certainly take a huge step down.

  • larc

Yes, I like her too! That’s what IdolManiac at IdolForums thinks is the shocker as well. You’re both probably right.

  • Ratna12

West Coaster here, yes I just saw the Kris commercial.
I love it. I was in the computer and I recoqnize that wonderful voice anywhere.I can’t wait to see the other two.

  • hoosiermama

I’m so happy Mary Powers was sent packing (did not like her), but was sad to see Shelby go. I thought her solo song was really good. The little snippet of my favorite from last week, Lily Scott, wasn’t that impressive–she sounded pitchy without her guitar. I wonder if she’ll be strong enough to make it tomorrow? So many good girl singers.

Were there 2 Kris commercials? We kept switching over to the dog show during the breaks, so missed it/them. But thanks to MJ, I’ve already seen the new ones and know how cute they are!!

  • gleekester

I thought Andrew and Ashely was just fantastic. I do not think that ppl don’t give Ashely enough credit. Ashely was fantastic tonight, she commanded her song. She has a very current r&b and pop voice. I am already calling her and Andrew for top 10.

  • jammasta

Based on the top 24 spoilers, I narrowed it down to my top 14. Ugh, those last 2 spots are hard to kill. WTF. Of the 7 we know, Aaron, Casey, and Didi are the ones who are there for sure. Michael could take that spot, but Todrick is growing on me. I see Michael making it over Todrick, and I see those three as locks. Aaron is the cute guy who teens like (Hell, my DAD likes him and he’d normally think a guy like Aaron is a fruitcake). Casey is women bait (I’m a guy, I don’t see it, but whatever, he’s amazing). Seems like Didi has been pimped a lot. I like her. I see Michael hovering between being a lock for top 12 and not being one. I think Todrick might have potential for a good musical vision, but I worry he won’t lose the diva attitude and may end up losing America. Lee DeWyze and Katelyn Epperly seem like cannon fodder to me, I see them being cut right before the Top 12.

As for other people to watch, I’d say Angela Martin, Andrew Garcia, and Crystal Bowersox. But where the HELL did Mallorie Haley go? I really liked her.

Jermaine Sellers could be an interesting one, but he lost me tonight I think.

  • gangreen29

I just read Slezak’s recap and he called the group that went through tonight the magnificent 7. I have a feeling all the conspiracy theorists out there are going to analyze the magnificent 7 to death. Of that group I think Didi, Casey, and Michael have the ability to go far, with Lee and Katelyn as darkhorses. I just love that it seems like everyone is on a pretty even playing field so far, you could make a case for a lot of people as potential top 2 finalists right now, unlike the previous years where you knew Archie, Gokey, and Adam would be occupying those coveted top few spots.

  • Ratna12

Hoosiermama: Were there 2 Kris commercials? We kept switching over to the dog show during the breaks, so missed it/them. But thanks to MJ, I’ve already seen the new ones and know how cute they are!!

I’m sure there is only one Ford commercial w/ Kris. When I said I want to see the other 2, I meant aired on TV ( since I know there are 4 total).
I kept switching to Olympics, have to DVR Lost and AI. Good thing the Westminster Kennel thing came at earlier time. I hate it when there are too many things to see at 1 time.

  • cookcricket

Crystal Bowersox did a good job and may be heading into the TOP 12,

So far, imo, she has been the most consistent contestant yet! I doesn’t hurt that I really like her, so hopefully that doesn’t color my perspective.

mj, are there going to be any videos of the singing? Thanks for all you do! :D

ETA: I saw two Kris commercials. The leaves vid game one and the one where he says everyone is good at talking. The one about the talking one had a snippet from WAOMF on the utube version, but they switched it to AWM. :D

  • MalwareDie
  • karenc

I think that Lee Deweeze reminds me a bit of Kris Allen and a little of David Cook, but not sure yet if he is as good as either of them. I kind of thought he was overconfident. I definately see Brooke White in Didi, and David Archeleta in Aaron Kelly. I really wanted someone that did rock to go through, but the only one that really did was Mary, and she was getting to be annoying and I didn’t like her that much anyway.

I’m finding quite a bit that I am comparing these contestants against former contestants, but no one is really standing out on their own to me yet. I have a few that I kind of like but no definate favorites, at least not yet.

  • BlankSlate

Aaron Kelly IS this year’s David Archuleta. You know he’s there to bring in the younger set. He fumbled the lyrics in an in your face way and yet he goes through. How can Simon et al make a big deal about the singers forgetting lyrics as an inexcuable faux pas.. and then they let Little Boy Kelly IN? (Has it come out on the air that he was the winner of the AI Experience and that he is not as inexperienced in the singing dept. as they would have us believe?)

  • kendallFTW

I Love Janell!!! I Hope she makes top 24!!! And makes the tour!!! =) Who agrees with me?

  • BlankSlate

Crystal is amazingly talented. She will be the feel good story of the season. Expect an Elliot Yamin-like makeover..

And why do I just KNOW they are setting up Big Mike to be this year’s Ruuuuuuuuuben?

  • sylvanaire

Of the ones that have been passed to the Top 24:

Big Mike doesn’t impress me. I mean, I like him okay, but don’t think too much of his voice, and the back story has been over done. Enough with the family already.

I really like Didi’s voice, and she seems sweet. I hope she can hold it together; she has a really distinctive voice, imo.

Katelyn Epperly was good, but I can take her or leave her, I don’t feel any connection to her yet.

Casey James is cute for sure, pretty blue eyes, but his hair always looks a little greasy to me, lol. I do like his voice, so I’m not going to hold it against him.

Arron Kelly is just too young for me to care anything about, doesn’t matter how good his voice might be, or how many lyrics he forgot. He’s just beneath my notice at this point.

Lee Dewyze doesn’t stand out to me at all. His voice is just mediocre, imo.

And what can I say about Todrick Hall? I definitely think the background information we learned about him earlier, in regards to that failed musical production, has tainted my opinion of him, but taken just on his vocals, he’s pretty good. We’ll have to wait and see how he behaves going forward.

    Of the ones sent home:
I liked Jessica Furney, thought she was pretty good, what they let us see/hear, anyway. I didn’t even mind when she made her stand with the judges at first, but she took it too far. One protest was enough, but she just went on and on…

Too bad about Shelby, but I really liked her attitude. It was the first thing she’d ever tried, it was just the beginning for her, not the end of her dream.

Was glad to see Jeramine Sellers go home, too much oversinging, and too much attitude about the band. He only had to remember his song, Michael Orland & Co had 46 songs to practice and remember. Don’t diss the folks who are going to make you look good later. Just fyi, kid.

Jermaine Purifoy, however, I liked a lot, and was sorry to see him in room two. He just had a really chill vibe about him, and I loved his voice. I’m probably going to hell, but I don’t like black singers as a rule. They tend to over sing everything like Whitney Houston did back in the day, church singers I guess you’d call them. But to be fair, I wouldn’t like that style of singing no matter what color their skin is. Archie is a prime example. Hate all those runs that get thrown in every syllable, ’til you can’t even tell what the word is that is being sung, much less the original melody. Blech!

I was sorry to see Hope go, I thought she had a nice husky voice, but perhaps her star power was a little low. I’ll get over it, lol.

Like others here I was glad to see Mary go. I think Todrick Hall is going to be enough for the “love to hate” contestants. We didn’t need two, lol.

For tomorrow, the only one I’m really pulling for is Angela Martin. She has so much stress in her life right now, I’d hate to see a huge disappointment added on top of everything. I think like David Cook used the show as a kinda of distraction from his brother’s illness, it would be good for her to have something positive to focus on. In addition to that, I do like her, and her voice. So fingers crossed for Angela.

Crystal Bowersox did a good job and may be heading into the TOP 12,

ETA: I saw two Kris commercials. The leaves vid game one and the one where he says everyone is good at talking. The one about the talking one had a snippet from WAOMF on the utube version, but they switched it to AWM.

Yeah, I was just re-watching my DVR and there were 2 Kris commercials. I can’t believe that Ford bought 2 ad time in 2 hours I guess. And what does it mean that they change WAOMF to AWM ? I think it’s better to have 2 diff songs featured, no ?

Crystal is the one that I remember because of her strong voice and she is kind of diff too. Didi is totally Brooke White #2. She even looks like her twin. Amazing. And OMG, Kara will just slobber all over Casey.

There were so many songs that were covered by Kris ; MITM, and I heard Chasing Pavement & The Scientist too I think or maybe my mind is just so full of Kris :) .

  • Grammie Kari

Well, I enjoyed what little we saw of Joe Munoz. Poor guy needs to establish a fan base. We haven’t seen much of Paige Miles. I wish Idol would try to have an even playing field. We pretty much can tell who they want in the TOP 12.

  • emmuzka

For some reason I like some of the contestants *despite* that they are pimped (Janell, Garcia, Bowersox), and I really dislike some, seemingly *because* they are so pimped.

I don’t like Big Mike, he is so over-pimped compared to his actual singing ability, and I hate Katie Stevens, just because Kara was all “you could be the winner!!” over her.

  • monleo1705

Realllyy??? Did Jermaine Sellers not make it to Top 24??? Omg…that makes me nervous because i thought the spoiler posted on top was pretty much 100% accurate and i was totally happy Andrew was in! But now if it’s not accurate and after they showed in the preview “a shocking elimination”, i swear it better not be Andrew FOX!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Wow, the most boring two hours which would have been a decent one hour show. So much repetition. Absolutely numbing.

Could not agree more! I don’t know if it was the fact that I was so incredibly bored or not, but I found myself so annoyed over and over again. Kara is driving me nuts this year. I feel as if she’s trying to take over Paula’s role without the kookiness. Ellen seems to be the only one truly engaged in the process and even she annoyed me last night.

Crystal Bowersox is my favorite at this point. I also really like Angela Martin and will be very sad if she doesn’t make it through. I think Casey James, Todrick Hall and Lee Dwyze are all overrated. Todrick’s attitude really turns me off. Kara slobbering all over Casey is nauseating. I’m so ready for all the preliminaries to be over!

  • oceana

My favorite men at this point are Casey, Andrew, and Mike. I like several of the women but don’t remember their names yet. I liked all 4 judges last night (a first). Also the production was much better, the way they edited and arranged everything was superb. It was easier to remember who was who (by face if not by name).

  • chessguy99

The show was a big confirmation that it is the girls’ year. Keeping the over-singing diva James Sellers, over the smooth likable James Purifory; says we aren’t giving you any guy that aren’t flawed.

To go over the first 7 of the Top 24:

Mike Lynche – Seems to be this year’s Michael Sarver. OK vocals, good personality, family man; I can’t help to think he’ll disappear once he makes the tour.

Didi Bernami – My suspicions are she is one of those great singers, but only with weeks to prepare. Her final audition was considerably below the level of her first two. But then, she had all of one day to prep it. I expect three good weeks and then it starts to fall apart in themes.

Katelyn Epperly – Agree with Ellen, she is not connecting with the songs. Something gives me the feeling she is only doing this to please her family, her heart really isn’t totally in this. Her final decision segment just left me with the feeling she’s fodder.

Casey James – He can actually sing very well, but the cougar-bait tag the show is hanging on him leaves a bad taste. I know the top guys aren’t that much in the looks department, but to make Casy the eyecandy of the season?

Aaron Kelly – Excellent voice, maybe the best pure vocals of the guys. He’ll make a good country star, in 5-6 years. The lyrics troubles are going to be his downfall. But, he has the vocals to do really well.

Lee DeWyzee – His final audition was amazing. Probably has the biggest vocals of the guys. Simon questioning his commitment this early leads me to think he’s one of the better guys, and they have to plant a negative seed in the audience mind to keep his popularity in control.

Todrick Hall – Not the smartest thing to say your a dancer not a singer on a singing competition show. The vocals are about what you expect of a musical theater guy who plays minor roles. He gives me the all flash, no substance vibe.

None of these seven are producer favorites; except for Big Mike, but that will change once the show assures us that his baby will have a college fund, when Mike makes the tour.

  • ggdoorsfan

Aaron Kelly IS this year’s David Archuleta. You know he’s there to bring in the younger set. He fumbled the lyrics in an in your face way and yet he goes through.

that appears to be what tptb are aiming for, but i don’t think it’s gonna happen – outside of their ages at the time of their auditions, there is nothing these two have in common – the wall street journal agrees, lol…

Mystifyingly, Aaron Kelly, who frequently forgot his lyrics, also got through. (Prediction: He won’t get the “Archuleta” teen-girls-and-moms vote, much as the show wants him too.)

I’m probably going to hell, but I don’t like black singers as a rule. They tend to over sing everything like Whitney Houston did back in the day, church singers I guess you’d call them.

wow, just…wow. having an opinion won’t send you to hell, but dismissing singers out of hand with such a sweeping and might i add, erroneous generalization, specific to their race, is going down a slippery slope that could be construed as tantamount to predjudice and racism. if it is melisma that doesn’t float one’s boat, that is fine, but to specifically exclude black singers out of hand, as a rule, for its use… not going there any further, those words speak very clearly regarding more than just a like/dislike of a musical preference or style.

Chiming in on Crystal Bowersox. Blew me away that she did a song with guitar and harmonica, of all things! I think she is lovely, very natural looking, just needs a little dental work (amazing what Crest Whitestrips can do) but other than that, would not change a thing about her. I disliked how Megan Joy got more and more glammed up as the season went on, last year. Can’t wait to see the “chairs” with Crystal tonight.

  • Valentin432

Liking the contestants so far, biggest surprise was probably Siobhan, girl has a big rock voice, that wail was impressive.
The fact that she makes angry faces and has a very personal style will probably be her downfall but on voice alone she’s one of the top 5 so far.

Blech!

Not sure why someone’s color matters here (your style is your style)and it’s odd you mention it then dial the thought back…

That show moved slo-mo for me; yes, it could have been compressed. My two favorites so far are Chrystal and Casey James, even though Casey seems to be filling the official Eye Candy role. Nice, smooth voice. Is it me or does he look like a young Brad Pitt, only a bit rougher and, so, better?

  • arkhail

imo, this season is kind of better than the last season…

shelby is so gracious(?) during her elimination and that made me like her more (not like jessica, who became irritating and funny at the same time because of her desperation)… i just wish that she did make it instead of katelyn, who i have trouble remembering her performances.

soooo glad when mary powers was cut!!! ha! todrick hall or sellers, or both, should have gone with her instead of porifory. singing included, those two are the most annoying contestant especially todrick who i find very arrogant.

i love the way crystal smiles, despite the teeth. :) and she has a very homey vibes. lol.

i can’t see any potential winner in tonight’s batch; even didi, who i like very much btw. there was just something in her that tells me that she’ll flame out or maybe the people will get tired of her after a few nights. lee might be the dark horse, and personally i find him kind of attractive, but so far he hasn’t really impressed me. but then again, how long did ai showed him or his singing for that matter?

  • arkhail

yeah! she’s one of my favorites so far.

Never thought I’d say I hate the instruments but if I see one more guitar strumming guy, I am going to scream!
Now Crystal, that’s another story! :)

No videos, mj? Aww. I missed the first part of the show on TV.

Casey did Bubbly? I would have liked to see that. Does anyone have a link to a video?

    Of the ones sent home:
I liked Jessica Furney, thought she was pretty good, what they let us see/hear, anyway. I didn’t even mind when she made her stand with the judges at first, but she took it too far. One protest was enough, but she just went on and on…

Yeah I didn’t mind either. She really wants this bad. :( I was on her side and said come on judges!! But then they said they wouldn’t change their mind. :( So it’s like you just have to accept it Jessica. :( She can come back next year! :)

I like Didi but wasn’t as bowled over by Terrified because I heard her veering off pitch whenever she belted. She held it in check which is great but it was a red flag for me because she might have to belt more when Bandzilla enters the picture. Angel also sounded off to me but it’s also very hard to tell from such short clips. A lot of people sounded very off to me last night.

Didi is an emotional singer, that’s a good thing. I might prefer Brooke’s tone but there are times I really like Didi’s and Didi’s instrument gives her more options. I also think her phrasing is very good – the best parts of what I liked about Megan Joy with better control. I’m rooting for her to bring it and maybe this season’s story of growth could be her growing in confidence and finding her place on the big stage. But she also seems like a possible candidate for getting overwhelmed early and never getting her footing. That’s why I’m not sure about her consistency and think the judges took a chance on her. I’ve got reservations but I hope she does great.

  • Kate8

Siobhan and Crystal are my two favorites from the girls so far. I like Haeley alot too, but so far she has been a little inconsistent. I can’t make up my mind about the guys at all.

  • Mary102

Ok, my take on last night:

Room 2 being cut seemed like a given. Mary Powers was ATROCIOUS in her final song, what a mess she made of Katy Perry – and so if she was making it any further it would have been a crime. Kinda surprised Hope was also cut, since she seemed to fill the “cute as a button with great backstory” role, but her voice was pretty weak imo.

As for the people who made it through, not really surprised. Aaron reminds me of Archuletta, Didi is like Brooke (but a better singer), and Casey is like Bucky but better looking and with a better voice.

I expect the people who are sure bets to join them (haven’t seen any spoilers, so have no idea) are:

    * Andrew Garcia
    * John Park
    * Chrystal
    * Lilly
    * Katie Stevens
    * Tyler Grady
    * Haeley

Those are the biggest standouts for me so far. Tyler may be on the bubble, and I feel there will be at least one shocker elimination tonight. Though last year all the early favs seemed to coast through to top 36 pretty easily.

Still kinda surprised we’re not seeing any John Park or Tyler – since they seem pretty popular. But maybe TPTB are actually doing them a favor by not over-hyping them too early (if they really are as good as they seemed in the brief audition moments).

I was not a fan of the way they announced the Top 24 this year – where’s my mansion or elevator of doom? Somehow the stupid theater made it seem like they were stepping on the set of Inside the Actor’s Studio for an interview. IDK. I loved the mansion last year – so pretty!

Oh, and if they put through Alex Lambert, I’m gonna scream at my tv. Dude has a terrible, weak voice, next to no charisma on stage, and it just seems like some weird PTB idea of “ohh, look his name is almost the same as Adam’s – wouldn’t that be cute to put him through?”

  • Mary102

I’ve seen her compared to Megan Joy and Brooke. I think she has a much stronger voice than either of them. She needs to keep her emotions in check for sure, but she’s definitely one of my early favorites.

Yes – this is my problem with Didi – those emotions are gonna drive me insane if she can’t control herself – she seems like a wreck at the drop of a hat. Way too much emotion. Though it brings to mind Kathryn from last season’s SYTYCD – she was a crying mess during Vegas Week, and I wrote her off because of it, but throughout the competition she never again showed those out of control emotions.

  • Mary102

Never thought I’d say I hate the instruments but if I see one more guitar strumming guy, I am going to scream!

I must say, I’m getting really really sick of it too. It seems that, what was started with David Cook and Jason in S7, and continued with Kris last year, has now exploded to some absurd level this year, where EVERYONE and their mother comes in with a guitar. It’s getting old with the guys, it’s getting old with the girls. Can’t they just have a mic and work the stage?

I’ll be honest, what I sometimes didn’t like as much about some of the instrument players in the past was that they would be pretty much stuck to one place on stage throughout the song. Whereas, without an instrument, I often feel we get much more singer interaction with the band, the audience, working the stage, etc. I much prefer that. JMO.

  • Mary102

There were so many songs that were covered by Kris ; MITM, and I heard Chasing Pavement & The Scientist too I think or maybe my mind is just so full of Kris

I’m wondering if they only had a really small list of songs to choose from for the final song. Way too many people seemed to choose MITM and the Jason Mraz song. Seemed weird that, if given the choice, people wouldn’t try to do something different to stand out more.

Liking the contestants so far, biggest surprise was probably Siobhan, girl has a big rock voice, that wail was impressive.

I haven’t heard much of her yet, but the snippet from last night was impressive – she actually brought the, dare I say, Adam-level vocals a little bit there. We’ll see how good she is further down the road. But so far I liked it.

  • gangreen29

Oh, and if they put through Alex Lambert, I’m gonna scream at my tv.

    His mullet kills me.

I think though in the Hollywood stage using an instrument is a good idea if you can play it adequately. Otherwise there is not much to do but stand there and sing. I think we will see less instruments in the finals. I agree though that during the top 12 week after week of glued to your guitar can be tiresome.

  • calimari

Just as an overall observation – this was the single dullest episode of AI I have ever seen. How many times are they going to repeat clips we’ve seen before? How many shots of people sitting in a room, stressing out, bored? How about showing more folks singing? And why are we only seeing the same folks singing over and over again – I see a lot of folks in those rooms – even the rooms going through – who I have never seen before. Can’t tell me you couldn’t give me 30 seconds of one of them instead of shots of traffic outside the hotel, people having breakfast, or clips of someone’s mom screaming over and over.

On a positive side, I do not feel like I’m being slammed in the head with backstory like I was last year w/ Danny Gokey and I don’t feel like any one or two people are consistently pushed on us like they did w/ Gokey & Lil Rounds last year. Yes, there are favorites, as evidenced by the fact that we keep seeing the same folks, but it’s more rounded out this year.

Still – what a snoozer last night.

  • Mary102

That’s a good point, and hopefully we’ll see much less of it later. But considering how many guitar players there are this year, I get a little nervous about it further into the competition.

Many of these singers seem to feel more comfortable with the instrument, as a backup of sorts, and so a lot of them wind up playing with it even further down the road of the competition (brings to mind people like Kris, Matt, and Scott last year – all much much more comfortable with an instrument than without, to the point where they would almost always perform with one).

I just hope we’re not seeing too much of that now.

  • MaryS-NJ

Katelyn Epperley is cannon fodder and will be this year’s Kristy Lee Cook.

Yup, I think Katelyn is the designated KLC/Megan Joy/Haley Scarnato contestant… They are all gorgeous girls but have under-whelming voices and stick around longer than they should. Although maybe not this season because there are other, better pretty blonde singers like, for example: Didi Benami and Crystal Bowersox.

Didi isn’t as good as the late, great Eva Cassidy (and really, who is?) but I think she has some of the same vibe. I like her very much and I think she’s the most polished of the WGWG pop singers so far.

Crystal just flat out moves me when she sings. I always like the voices that really touch the emotions of the songs. She’s got incredible phrasing. I’m going to enjoy watching her. Actually, she’s another one I’d put in the Eva Cassidy category for her soulful delivery.

Janell Wheeler – I just can’t get into her. She’s beautiful and has a lovely but generic voice. Meh. Still, I think will appeal to a broad audience even if she’s not my cup of tea.

Sioban Magnus – Great set of pipes, this girl can SANG! But her facial expressions distract me. I realize it’s petty but it’s hard for me to enjoy listening when she’s making such angry, aggressive faces. She needs wardrobe help too.

Haeley Vaughn – Nerves, nerves, nerves! It’s Lisa Tucker/Jasmine Murray with a country twist. She’s absolutely adorable and I think will have a lot of promise but she seems overcome right now.

Ashley Rodriguez– She’s another beautiful young woman with a pretty, contemporary but generic (r&b) voice. She does have that “package” look and is young enough to excite “OMG!JUST17!!1!!” Randy Jackson, but she seems kind of like the women who’ve spent their lives in pagents; too studied and by the book in her genre. I suspect she is a favorite of the PTB for that very reason.

    The unlucky lucky:

Shelby – Reminded me of Gina Glocksen but it’s probably just superficial. I liked her personally but there were enough better voices among the girls.

Jessica – Lost all the good will she had with me. It was one thing to stand up for herself in order to finish her part in the group but the begging and the blaming others was not cool. Basically, she wanted the judges to ditch someone else for her. She was not a stand out voice.

    Aaaand now the guys…

Michael Lynch – Now that I don’t have to hear about his wife’s dilated cervix, I can just enjoy. I like him although I feel like he was phoning in a bit during Hollywood. Maybe that’s all he has in him, but we’ll see.

Casey James – My weakness: a gritty, bluesy, “whiskey” (baritone) voice. I agree that he’s like Bucky but better. He seems to be pretty consistent, pretty real and I like his vibe. Yeah, I think he’s attractive too. He’s definitely one of my favorites and I hope he makes it at least to the Top 10 because I would really like to see him perform live on tour.

Lee DeWyze– A NICE surprise! Another gritty baritone although I prefer Casey’s polish to Lee’s rawness, from the little bit we got to hear of Lee. I wonder if he and Casey are meant to split the vote for those of us who like this kind of WGWG?

Todrick – Definitely has a nice voice in there under all the OTT melisma but I’m getting a tool-ish vibe from him.

Jermaine Sellers– Ditto. The diva ‘tude grates although I think he’s got a good voice as well.

Aaron Kelly– I think this is a case of nerves waiting for a breakdown. Having said that, he’s young and has a nice pop-country vibe that is something the PTB don’t currently have in their stable. I can easily see him being the one with the growth arc this season and doing very well in the finals if he doesn’t crash and burn in the semis.

  • carolinacharms

Todrick Hall is the bomb. I don’t think he was OTT with his melisma. Not. At. All. And that glimpse of Tasia-esque gravel in the middle of “I’m Yours” could be a sign of great performances yet to come.

  • IdolThoughts

Katelyn Epperly does nothing for me. I love her hair though. But, seriously…lets be real…Shelby should have been chosen over her. I’m sad that she didn’t make it. I think her appearance was more off putting than her singing. Someone get Crystal Bowersox some Crest Whitening Strips before they give her the heave-ho too!

  • Kate8

I think all of the people in Mary Power’s group should have been put in the top 24 for having to deal with her.

  • cheese

The only ones who impressed me with their actual vocals last night were Siobhan and Crystal and that girl who sang The Scientist pretty damn well and then got the boot.

I normally like WGWG, but Casey and Lee, zzzzzzzz. That Alex kid is kind of hilariously bad. If he makes Top 24, you know he’s going to come out with his ukelele and sing I’m Yours again on the first competition night. Andrew Garcia already sounds like he’s singing the same song over and over, Jermaine and Todrick are annoying. I still have some slight hope that John Park and Tyler Grady have something a little different to offer, otherwise, I think it’s a girls year for me.

  • Miss Chaos

I dont see Crystal winning, and I am going on Record to say that Siobhan will win. Even tho guys get voted for I predict that they will fall like flys one by one.

  • Mary102

I dont see Crystal winning, and I am going on Record to say that Siobhan will win. Even tho guys get voted for I predict that they will fall like flys one by one.

Tonight will confirm the fuller picture of who’s in the top 24, but so far my guess is that TPTB are truly trying to put through only mediocre guys (with the exception of Andrew, who does seem to have the pipes and confidence to make a strong showing), and lots of talented women. Most of the guys, imo, are not idol material (Big Mike? Casey? Lee? I don’t think so).

Last year, otoh, had a TON of guys who could have potenially won, at least based on what we saw through H’wood week – Matt, Anoop, Danny, Adam. All talented, interesting, and unique.

  • SarahP

    my take on today’s episode:

really sad that shelby didn’t make it. i thought she did much better than katelyn and had a bigger sob story (if that counts) but that girl has a positive attitude and i hope we get to hear more from her somewhere in the blogosphere.

didi is nice but she doesn’t come across as genuine as brooke white so i dont see where the comparisons start, except they are both blonde girls who sing with a guitar. she’s a TPTB favourite though.

on the other hand, crystal was amazing, genuine and kick-ass. just hope she gets a dental before she comes for top 24. love the harmonica. my top favourite girl so far.

my 2nd favourite girl is angela. i love her voice, her story and her personality. lets hope she doesn’t do a li’l rounds on us.

and i dont know why but i love that black country girl. her voice is very trembly but that whole nervous-innocent look she has is adorable. i hope she gets stronger further on.

casey! its a wonder that kara didn’t ask him to take his pants off before advancing him. casey, with #pants on the ground# would’ve been a funny sight. good looking guy with a good voice, but of the guys showcased today i liked lee the best. he reminds me of david cook but i get the feeling he’s cannon fodder this season.

and of those not showcased, i want me some john park and tyler grady. i’m rooting for those two now itself so dont disappoint me please.

thats it! and i hated kara’s dress. and did anyone notice how she almost got up to comfort shelby (i think) but sat down again and got up again, all cross legged? awkward!!! and ellen, as usual was super.

  • Ratna12

One thing that I forgot to ask: Were the parents /family ever sit in the Kodak Theater before ?. I did not remember of it before. Maybe I did not pay that much attention. It was kind of annoying to me especially for that one “mama’s boy”.

Michael Lynche, I don’t know why I don’t really feel him. Too much baby stuff, manipulative to the audience. Not his fault but the producer, but still.. And since the audience are mainly women, for sure he will make it to top 12 and once there, he’ll make it to tour.

  • IdolThoughts

Something funny worth mentioning…can I kiss the camera person/editor who shows us all of Kara’s awkward fangirly dance moves and head nodding? They must HATE her to catch her in all her awkward glory. I love it.

  • Valentin432

I dont see Crystal winning, and I am going on Record to say that Siobhan will win. Even tho guys get voted for I predict that they will fall like flys one by one.

I liked her last night but this seems really far fetched based on her curent non popularity. Her face makes that angry expression when she goes for the high notes that will bother a lot of people (see Carly Smithson) and her whole look is a complete trainwreck.

Of course, that makes her a potential Kelly Clarkson but she doesn’t seem to have the same nice personality/girl next door vibe that appealed to America.

Katelyn is neither a country singer (like KLC) nor she is an untrained singer like Megan and I won’t even get to Haeley Scarnato.
I definetly didn’t see in Hollywood what I’ve heard on myspace/youtube but I think she’s way better than what you’re giving her credit for.

  • http://twitter.com/StuYeWest StuYeWest

    I have a few favorites…
    Andrew Garcia
    Jermaine Sellers
    Casey James
    Big Mike
    Toddrick Hall

I was a HUGGGGE Danny Gokey fan last year, and I felt after the auditions that Jermaine would be like him. But after hollywood week, they arent even close to the same. Who throws their band under the bus like that? What a messed up thing to do, but I still like him. Andrew Garcia is just amazing! and Casey James is turning out to be so much better than what I had imagined after the first time we saw him!

  • uhohnogo

I liked Shelby and felt sad when she got cut. I think she has more of a connection/personality than Katelyn Epperly. I was really rooting for her! When Katelyn made it, I felt ….ehhh.

    Casey James is HOT. Love.

I hope we do not get into a David Archuleta situation with Aaron Kelly. I can’t take it again.

  • uhohnogo

And, Crystal really needs teeth whitening. BAD.

  • Calas

The Idol band is pretty horrible in general, they deserve to be thrown under the bus every week.

  • MaryS-NJ

Well, I reserve the right to change my mind about her later but for now I can only go by what I’ve seen. Compared to other girls that are known to be in the top 24, I think Katelyn is the least remarkable (girl) singer so far. She is very beautiful though.

  • windmills

and i dont know why but i love that black country girl. her voice is very trembly but that whole nervous-innocent look she has is adorable. i hope she gets stronger further on.

Haeley Vaughn is making me understand why people like Taylor Swift despite her offkeyness. Because Haeley has sounded like a hot mess at every Hollywood stop they’ve shown and yet I hear the potential and want to give her a chance because she’s got a spark to her. She’s definitely got a better instrument than Taylor so I hope Haeley gets it together vocally if she’s making it any further. If she keeps up with the painful missed notes I’ll be over giving her a chance fast.

I forgot to mention IMO Ashley Rodriguez was totally underwhelming singing Battlefield yet Ryan narrated what a strong performance she gave.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

I see a lot of talent in this year’s TOP 24. Really.

But, is it just me or are there really so many folk/indie/alternative types this year? Umm, I have a hard time imagining some of them on TOP 40/HAC or country radio. I’m talking about Lilly Scott, Siobhan Magnus … etc. I’m not saying they aren’t talented.

I also must say that this whole thing with instruments is getting out of hand. It seems like the at least half of them play guitar. Too bad they will be allowed to play instruments in the semifinal rounds. I would love to see a few rounds without the instruments. I got the feeling Casey James and Crystal Bowersox are really attacked to their guitars. Too much. Seriously, contestants who don’t play instruments, get bonus points from me.

I also think this is a girls year. I mean, I think Andrew Garcia can be brilliant and Casey, Todrick and Michael also did well. I’m not impressed with Alex Lambert, Lee Dewyze and Tyler Grady. Also, too many guitar players.

Now, girls… They are way more interesting than the guys. We didn’t hear all of them, but for now I only dislike Didi Benami. My dislike for her started at her audition with all the crying and her sob story (Gokey, anyone?) and I’m not really a fan of her voice. She has trouble with belting. Overall, I also don’t think she is emotionally stable.

I think Janell Wheeler is one of the most commercial contestants this year. I just hope she takes care of her voice a little better. My next favorite is Crystal Bowersox. I really enjoyed her performances, but I wonder how she would do without her guitar. I think Lilly Scott is amazing, but I think her jazzy voice would be more appreciated elsewhere. I must say I like Ashley Rodriguez. She is like a breath of fresh air after all these girls with guitars.

  • MalwareDie

Oh, the horror! Tim Urban might be in the Top 24 instead of Chris Golightly. I think he is dreadful.

  • jammasta

MJ, I don’t mean to bitch, but did you really have to put Shelby’s picture up there? I would think someone who actually went through would be more appropriate, lolz.

It would also be less depressing since I liked Shelby a lot.

  • jga94

MJ, I totally agree with you on Jermaine Purifory and Tasha deserving to move forward….and totally agree with you on Sellers….and add to that Haeley, Epperly, and even Wheeler.I cannot remember how Urban or Lambert sound like.
