Contestant Rocky Peter talks to Ryan Seacrest about his emotional journey and childhood growing up in Nigeria. The hope he found in music led him to pursue his dream and audition in front of the judges in San Francisco, in this American Idol 14 preview.
Rocky was born in the United States, but when Rocky was a kid, his father sent him, his mother and brothers back to Nigeria, where he promptly abandoned them.
They were so destitute, the family had to beg for food. They ate from trash cans and drank potentially tainted water from potholes and broken pipes. Music was the thing that got Rocky through the difficult times. “It’s the one thing that does not have to be given to you,” says Rocky. “You can get it.”
He held on to hope that, as a US citizen, he would make his way back home some day. And now here he is, working to fulfill his dreams. The perfect American Idol backstory, right?
To make Rocky’s tale even more poignant, he sings a song for the judges–Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. that he wrote himself.
The tune, “Wrong Places,” features an emotional delivery from Rocky, and a falsetto you won’t soon forget. The audition is set to air during the Thursday, November 29 edition of American Idol 14.
This is the final week of auditions! San Francisco will be featured in two 1 hour parts, Wednesday January 28 and Thursday January 29 on FOX.
