American Idol 14: Qaasim Middleton Was Really “Confused” in Save Aftermath (AUDIO)

AMERICAN IDOL XIV: Qaasim Middleton is given the judges save and moves on to the next round on AMERICAN IDOL XIV airing Thursday, March 19 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Michael Becker / FOX. © FOX BROADCASTING CO.

Right after the judges saved him on American Idol Thursday night, Qaasim Middleton found it hard to articulate how he felt.  The events surprised him, because after his Party Songs performance of “Jet” by Paul McCartney and Wings last week, he felt really good! In the immediate moments after the show, he kept referring to being “confused.”  Listen to his post show remarks, below, recorded immediately after he left the stage, via FOX Audio.

Also backstage after the show, the judges weighed in on why they decided to use the Save.  Scott Borchetta felt that Movie Night was particularly challenging for the younger contestants, and Harry Connick Jr. felt frustrated with the song choices the finalists. He did not feel it was a good night of performances, overall.

Listen to the Audio Clips below!

Qaasim was shocked to have the lowest number of votes: “I’m very happy about the whole situation. I’m very happy for everybody who is still here. We all get to spend another week with each other, and that’s great. But I’m really confused, I’m really confused man. I feel really good about my last performance, and that [almost sent me home]. I don’t know what to do now.  I was very comfortable with all my song choices too. They kind of threw that whole…aw man, I don’t know what to do man. I feel good…but I’m. Uh. I think I’m going to talk about it with God…and see what he [thinks].”

On working with Scott Borchetta, and more on The Save: “He helps me out with my song choices and he talks to me about…just to be smart about everything…. He’s great. He works with you as an artist, and allows for you to…do what you want to do. Man. I don’t know! I’m just confused right now.”

Harry Connick Jr. on the overall quality of the performances on Movie Night: “It was not a good night. There were a couple of them who did OK, but you know? Out of the THOUSANDS of songs for movies…I just didn’t understand some of the choices. There’s thousands of great songs.”

Harry Connick Jr. on using the Save on Qaasim: “Had he not done particularly well tonight, I still think we feel strongly about him. He’s gonna have to focus more on pure singing at some point. But he’s kinda got his own lane with that high energy performance thing. And that was an amazing performance just now. I think he deserves it. We all do.”

Keith Urban on using the Save: “Yeah. Qaasim always delivers with a great performance. And he did tonight.”

Jennifer Lopez on using the Save: “I mean, he’s the best performer on the show this year. I really believe…I think for us it’s always about the performance they give at the moment. And he really, really “murked” it like they say! You know what I mean? He just really killed it. It just had to be done.”

Scott Borchetta on Movie Night being tough for the younger contestants: “You have a generation here that doesn’t have a bunch of huge movies in their life. We grew up–if you look at 70’s 80’s 90’s–you had the Titanic, you had movies that were in the DNA of an entire country. Now you have different generational things that are more cliche and more clique. You talk to a lot of the contestants about ‘What are your favorite movies?’ and it’s like ‘Well, there are no hit songs from that.’ It’s really a challenging theme to make sure you match up the best that you can.”
