American Idol 14: Aretha Franklin to Mentor Top 16

According to TVLine, legendary soul diva, Aretha Franklin, will mentor the American Idol season 14 Top 16 as they return to Detroit for two more Motown-themed episodes.

Although the initial press release announcing the Detroit shows indicated the first live show would be March 4, it looks like instead the shows will be taped earlier on the same day they air. Once again, if you will be attending these tapings–please contact me, or better yet, tweet me. We want song spoilers!

Aretha will also perform on the Idol stage for the first time since that awkward appearance via satellite during the season 12 finale.

Folks have been tweeting me, confused about how the new format sans results show is going to work. I’ll try to explain:

The Top 12 boys and girls performed for your votes Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Next week on March 4 and 5 (8/7c pm FOX),  The Top 12 boys and girls will assemble on Wednesday and Thursday respectively for a combined performance/results show.

Ryan Seacrest will reveal which 8 boys (March 4) and with 8 girls (March 5) will sing for your votes (according to the press release). The remaining 4 boys and 4 girls will be eliminated.  On Wednesday, March 11, the Top 12 will be revealed in Los Angeles. That show is supposed to air live.

If I’m reading the TVLine item correctly, next week will actually be a Motown theme. I’m having some trouble mustering up enthusiasm for this.  But maybe some of you have ideas about what the Idols should sing. Sound off in comments!
