I agree with the top 2 and in that order, but there was something lacking in a lot of the groups, including those two.

  • fantoo1

Maybe what they were lacking were boys? :)

LOL at people like Kez, “true artists”, that will fight until death for a meaningful and deep song like California Dreaming, that has like 20 words about going to California to be a typical Hollywood Star and failing to succeed

  • jammasta

It probably would’ve been better off if the boys and girls did it together IMO.

It is great when the right chemistry shows up for the group performances.  It happened a few times tonight.

  • CB40

I thought none of the groups this whole season were all that incredible. The guys and girls missed each other, and the decision to force groups to be formed backfired IMO.

The group performances this year, both boys and girls were extremely disappointing. No stand outs. Being on key was considered and accomplishment.

    I vote for:
“stop screaming at me” for the win last night

Just think how AI history would have been rewritten if had been okay to forget the lyrics… floored by some choices, and happy for groups like the top two here that were really good and were rewarded with everyone going through.

Just think how AI history would have been rewritten if had been okay to forget the lyrics…

Just think. That sweet girl from Season 4, Carrie Underwood, might have won the entire thing, gone on to become the best selling Idol in history and won another Grammy this week if only it had been okay for her to forget the lyrics during Hollywood. Poor girl, she was cut after she botched the lyrics to “Young Hearts Run Free” and never heard from again. Oh, wait…

If the judges like you, it has always been okay to forget the lyrics. Remember Scotty “Nuts of Wonder” McCreery? Often, if you are a favourite, they politely skip over the time you forgot your lyrics by not showing it. Sometimes, it forms part of your redemption arc.

Asking somebody to memorize a new song, deal with group dynamics and the pressure of the show is a recipe for forgotten lyrics. If you can ad lib in key (and put on a show for Nicki), you’ll at least get some credit. If you have had previous good performances that can carry you through. If you’ve been coasting (or share too much in common with other contestants who make for better television), forgetting the lyrics may be the reason you get the boot.

I agree with those that have posited that group round is just about getting some good film for the TV show.

“I agree with those that have posited that group round is just about getting some good film for the TV show.”

More and moreso, I really believe that’s the only reason for this part of the competition. From yesterday’s cuts, it seems pretty clear to me that the performances of some in the groups was irrelevant to whether or not they were put through.

If that is true, then the producers have made a mistake this year.  It isn’t entertaining when everything feel forced and you have a show full of bad performances.  In the past it’s watching the contestants making decisions, and it’s interesting because it is their decision.  Making choices for them take the fun out of that,  and the whole show feels tedious.  The conflicts don’t feel genuine (the Country Queen for the boys was obviously designed to set two different groups of people in conflict), and the drama feels fake.  The conflicts, the human drama are in any case the spices that make a show “tasty”, but it’s the performances that’s the meat of the show, when you don’t get great performances, and  you have only spices left, you can’t eat only spices.

I don’t know who come up with the idea of separating male and female and choosing group for them, but it is a complete flop.

Totally agreed. And it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that some contestants were placed in perfect groups (whether to have show’s “This is how it is done” moment or just to help them on the road to victory) while others were put together for D-R-A-M-A!!!11!!!ELEVENTY-ONE!!!

It is always more interesting to see how groups organically form on their own and how good often recognizes good. And we find some unexpected gems.

Nigel, let the contestants take the wheel (cause you are on spinning on a thin black sheet of ice).

Haha…so true. I love Kez, I do…but ‘California Dreaming’ is not as deep and meaningful as she seems to think.

  • Holden17C

There’s something infuriating about contestants writing lyrics on their hands. It’s flat out cheating. So many girls did this — and they didn’t even have enough shame to attempt to hide it. I recall that JLo, who was far from the harshest judge AI has ever seen, cut a guy specifically for doing that. This should be grounds for automatic disqualification.

I have become a big fan of the show and want it do great, but last night left a sour taste in my mouth.  There seemed to be so many strange decisions and Nikki Minaj’s tastes are so different from what even seems to make sense to me (and my daughter was getting angry when people she liked got cut) that well, I find it hard to keep watching…

i think it’s still the guys’ season!!  :)

Not surprised to see the Swaggettes highly rated. Melinda and Candice are my favorite female contestants.

Whoah. If the judges can’t make any consistent sense WITH editing – and they don’t –  the live shows promise to be a trip!

What happened to that “One minute of professionalism” last night!?! when there were lost words, lost notes, lost keys and lost composure – and instead of calling the hamsters on the self indulgent messes we were exposed to – the judges had pity parties to attend?

The Best of the Worst? Probably the aptly named Dramatics and the ‘endearing’ child who got a pass for acting worse than Paul Jolley ever thought of, the “You never sang a word” Drama Rama Queen Jannel Stinney…that one was like telling a writer – ‘I was mesmerized by your book, the pages were blank from start to finish, so endearing.’ – It makes no sense.

But all the off key yelling, melismatic notes in search of the pitch pipe, lyric mumbling, (and inscribing) examples get an Honorable Mention. Because there were too many to mention.

WTH? Even as videos, that was frustrating and tedious. IMO.
