American Idol 12 Theme - Bacharach-David + Free Choice

According to @IdolSpoilers, next week’s American Idol will feature 2 themes:

The Burt Bacharach-Hal David Song Book – WTF? This songwriting duo penned wonderful songs, but they are as old as dirt. Guarantee not ONE of the contestants will know the songbook. What the hell, Nigel. What’s going on? You won’t even talk to us on twitter anymore!

Free Choice, billed as “Songs You Wish You Wrote”. – I’m betting it will be “Free Choice–as long as your pick is on this list of 10 songs.” Hmf.

That will certainly make people go “Oh, yeah, I’d rather watch Idol than the Voice because it’s so modern!” :/

  • irockhard

TPTB will never learn! That’s why must all be sh!tcanned!!!! The ratings for next week will be laughable!

  • itsalleternal

I am sure the other networks are smiling right now. Seriously, Ken and Nigel, it is time for both of you to go!

  • http://twitter.com/newbornstarr Wally.

    BOOOORING.

  • http://twitter.com/TeamJaaySanchez Team Jessica Sanchez

Oh Uncle Nigel. I like him and all but he’s driving #Idol into the ground this year. If Fox decides to pick Idol up for a 13th season, they might seriously want to think about bringing in a younger producer because DizzyFeet’s time is up. They need to freshen things up on this beloved show. Still got love for him though.

  • lovesickheroine

I’ve never heard of Bacharach-David. Geez TPTB really wants idol to sink! Poor contestants!

  • itsalleternal

I hope the contestants step forward and complain, even if they risk disqualification, in order to save the show!

  • Liteasy

Majority of Dionne Warwick songs – ballads!!

  • http://twitter.com/1outside Maj

Angie or Kree should sing Alfie.
TBH even if they don’t know these songs they should fit them better than this week. We’ll see.
But yeah…do I want this theme? one ultra retro theme a season should be enough, right? *sigh*

  • Madilo

i don’t know who they’re like at all but i remember “songs you wish you wrote” and Phillips “Volcano” hope at least one contestant will have a moment like he did with it

  • http://twitter.com/happylittlefish Amy Beth

Dear AI TPTB, you all make enough money to buy your own tickets to whatever nostalgia fest you want to see. Really good seats I bet. Stop turning the show into what you would watch on your own time, and start working on what the American viewing public wants.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Jeebus. It just keeps getting worse. SMH.

  • http://twitter.com/OzzyBonjour ??EvHeaD??ozzy??

I have no idea who these guys are. Seriously, no idea.

  • http://twitter.com/1outside Maj

They’re not bad songs but it’s pretty much mostly late 50′s to mid-80′s stuff. The songs of their that I know are all 60′s (sung by Dusty, Dionne, Cher…). Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. Everyone knows that one. Right? But you never know with these contestants.

  • Larc

Burt Bacharach will be 85 next month and Hal David died last year at 91. Nothing they wrote is still even remotely current.

  • irockhard

    Oh gawd kill me now!

  • AndyB11

Lazaro singing Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My
    Head would be epic!

  • b_james

Wow. What is going on here?

  • Devin Harper

LMAO. IT’s official: Nigel doesn’t care anymore.

  • cheese1

I looked up the songs and I know them, but I probably heard them on Mop-n-Glo or Saran Wrap commercials or something.

Most Idol viewers probably learn the theme at the beginning of the show unless they’re reading blogs or watch Fox a lot. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if some channels are changed when Lazaro busts out “What’s New Pussycat”

  • http://twitter.com/mcdeallover Sunny Mc

We need someone to find the average age of the songs we’ve heard since top 10. It has to be about 25 to 30 years old. Not exactly a way to compete against The Voice.

  • nprins

Lets put this horse out of its misery NOW….Fox do not renew this show, it is dead

  • WehoScott

I’m kind of excited about this. Current, schmurrent. I mean, Bacharach-David tunes are, IMO, timeless. What’s more, I really think many of their songs can be sung well by a variety of singers. The only singer who really left her mark on their tunes is Dionne Warwick. I love the idea of the contestants covering the works of songwriters as opposed to other performers – less to compare (see judges’ comments on Adele cover last week). A good AI contestant will make them sound current or unique.

That said, I still agree with everyone (including Michael Slezak) who’s dying to hear current stuff covered – like P!nk & Bieber, just to see how they do on these types of songs (and what they can change to make it their own).

Now, what’s really going to piss me off is when all or most of these kids say they didn’t know any of this music!

  • Weebs787

I’ve never been one to harp on the themes. A great song is a great song no matter the age, artist, tempo, etc. and anybody can take a great song, whether done to death or not, and turn in a great performance. But…. this is a terrible theme. My goodness.

  • WehoScott

Oh, wait, I forgot, Idol’s not trying to capture my demographic – 53 year old gay man. LOL

  • http://twitter.com/mcdeallover Sunny Mc

LOL, Lazararo singing What’s New Pussycat would definetely take out the sting of him still being there!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=754136041 Jason Gorny

Wow… What the heck. Yeah… Idol should expect massive rating drop next week! Idol will go down to the 2s.

  • taylor

Are they trying to drive the ratings down even more? Are they trying to push away more of the viewers in the younger demographic?

Is it self-sabotage or are they really that out of touch with anything remotely current?

  • Miss Blue

Omg. It is now time to find out which Voice producer is paying Nigel to sink American Idol. This is beyond belief.

I will be 60 years old in 2 months and even I consider this theme old, boring, dusty, boring, irrelevant, and boring.

  • Patrick Tang

Oh my god, this means that Lazaro is singing Bridge Over Troubled Water again..

  • itsalleternal

Maybe 1s? 0s (not likely in the short term, but who knows, those are CW level ratings)

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

    LMAO!!!

  • ninergrl6

Ryan Seacrest should take over as producer. He knows what’s hot and what people want to see/here. Plus he’s go MAJOR music connections as a result of 20+ years in radio.

  • curly_yenta

Great theme! When the season 5 gang sang the duo’s songbook on their season finale with Burt on piano, it was one of the best group sings in the history of the show, IMO. Of course, the talent was excellent that year ;)

  • http://anibundel.wordpress.com/ anibundel

Isn’t “Magic Moments” (Perry Como) theirs too?
Too bad Devin’s not still around.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

No, wait! That’s Simon & Garfunkel! LOL.

  • curly_yenta

That would be epic!! LOL! Oh I can’t wait.

  • Patrick Tang

Yes, for the second theme ‘Songs you wish you wrote’ ;)

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

“Out of touch” gets my vote. I think Lythgoe has developed a sort of cultural senility, where he seriously believes that the “youth culture” of the 1960s and early 1970s is still young, vibrant, and relevant today.

I might soften up for a Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass instrumentation style on one of these hoary chestnuts, but that’s partly in the spirit of hipster irony.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

Wtf is a Burt Bacharach?! Hopefully the “free choice” is a list of current songs. By list, I don’t mean a short list of 10 cleared songs.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

Now and then my husband is funny. He just said, “Next week will be great hymns of the 19th century!”

  • Face

it’s official, TPTB have given up… they might has well have called next week ‘classic ballad week’…
lets face it, although they are awesome song writers, B&D have a ballad heavy songbook… and with this lot, the music you wish you wrote theme, has trite power ballad written all over it… give me strength!!

  • http://twitter.com/WolfpackBuckeye Nichole

Oh Idol… I really want to love you but you keep making it so hard to be a viewer

  • http://twitter.com/1outside Maj

Yeah, this theme would have been perfect for him.

  • CB40

    UGH

  • irockhard

I agree. At this point I’m praying that they all give TPTB a giant f*ck you!

  • http://twitter.com/avrohama aj rabin

No theme will work this season. That’s because the judges and contestants suck! In years past the contestants and the judges panel entertained us even when we were hearing Natural Woman or Piece of my heart for the gazzilionth time.

  • http://twitter.com/avrohama aj rabin

He hopefully won’t get that chance.

  • nyc57

This theme seems more appropriate for a PBS special.I’m old enough to know all their songs and that theme makes me cringe.Even us boomers don’t want to hear this. They hire Nicki to get younger viewers and use these themes.Have they completely lost their minds.

  • usedtobelucy

“Is it self-sabotage or are they really that out of touch with anything remotely current?”

I wonder whether these older songs are just way easier and cheaper to clear — and we know that they’re both cheap and lazy-minded …..

Next it’ll probably be “Songs on Which Copyright Has Expired.”

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

The ballad week is back! With a vengeance. However, there is hope.

“A House Is Not A Home”, sadly Vince and Curtis are no longer with us, but Candice can-and should take on Luther’s brilliant interpretation.

Burnell can channel the Iceman,Jerry Butler on (Make It Easy On Yourself)

Angie at the piano, Diana Krall’s most successful CD contains one of her best, “The Look Of Love”

Janelle(this year’s creative one) the alternative rockers,The Wondermints cover of “Don’t Go Breaking my Heart”

Amber, time to go to Memphis and meet the late, great Isaac Hayes’ cover of, “”Walk On By”

Kree, Dusty Springfield’s cover of, “This Girl’s in Love With You”

    Dusty Springfield

  • usedtobelucy

Honestly, Bacharach-David songs weren’t even culturally cool when they were written. Not even close. Might as well have a “greatest hits of Lawrence Welk” week.

  • hellomusicgirl

Maybe next week we can do the songs of Charlie Chaplin…

  • Face

by any chance is your husband a 60 year old British man called Nigel?

  • usedtobelucy

“it was one of the best group sings in the history of the show, IMO. Of course, the talent was excellent that year ;)”

That’s the thing. If you’ve actually got a bunch of people who are very very musical and really know who they are as performers, they can make something pretty good out of most anything. But when you have mostly people who don’t contribute much of their own oomph to a song, then to have a listenable show you need songs that easier to grab a contemporary audience with. I’d say we’ve got mostly the latter situation this season.

  • http://twitter.com/happylittlefish Amy Beth

He’s the Austin Powers of music.

  • nyc57

Maybe they will have Dionne Warwick on results night to sing. That should help the ratings.lol

  • LA944

Don’t know if its too good for the demo–but I love me some of Bacharach/David songs. Very melodic. I have a soft spot for them. I think because my parents used to play those songs a lot. I still listen to them. I am one of those who doesn’t care if a song was written in 1930 or last night–as long as it’s a good song. Good music is art and good art is timeless. (However, I don’t want to hear the same songs over and over.) So, while most of you will be hating next week–I will look forward to hearing what Candice is going to do. She is going to kick ass on it. That was my fave thing in season five the Bacharach finale-HA! Sorry to all those who want to smack me

  • curly_yenta

A medley of Bacharach/David songs from the finale of Season 5, for those who don’t know the catalogue. Plenty to choose from, imo.

Hmm, a silent show…would Laz still forget his words?

  • Larc

I still like “What’s New Pussycat?” for Lazaro if he’s still around. Or maybe “Do You Know the Way to San Jose.” But I’m far from optimistic he’ll be able to remember lyrics for a Bacharach-David song plus another one, neither of which he will have ever heard.

  • chillj

    Shhhhh. Don’t give Nigel ideas.

  • chillj

I’m old enough to know all their songs and can’t remember a one.

  • chillj

    Or the Walt Whitman songbook.

  • http://twitter.com/PattiHum Pat H

OMG! What is wrong with Nigel and Darnell?! I am flabbergasted!

  • vdawg

Why not Billboard top 100 2003 or songs from movies (after 1990) or anything that is not in the 1960/1970/1980′s. Do the producers want Idol to fail? I wonder.

  • chillj

Most contestants can do the Bieber songbook better than Bieber, so that is a big plus right there! Not so much with PInk, but it still would be fun.

  • damo

Based on this theme announcement, it is obvious that Lazaro is going home tonight. There is not enough time to have 7 contestants sing two songs.

  • LeahKittyS

Phillip’s “Volcano,” Jessica’s “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” and Joshua’s “It’s a Man Man Man’s World” were all shining moments from that theme.

  • LeahKittyS

It’s already gone down to 2s for the results shows. Last week’s was a 2.7, an all-time series low.

  • guinness416

I think he just envisions some “three generations of the family gathered round the TV sharing in enjoying updates of timeless songwriting!” scenario that really doesn’t exist in 2013. Mom and Dad moved far from grandma for work and the kids are on their smartphones, Nigel.

  • guinness416

Haha, watching Nicki’s reaction to Lazaro taking on What’s New Pussycat would definitely be worth the price of admission :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.swanson1 Barbara Swanson

Beyond understanding. This is the first year I have watched the Voice, and I love it–because the judges support each other, have great chemistry and really are into the contestants.
Idol’s judges are beyond not good–they keep me away. I can’t stand the grade school level histrionics and crap between 2 grown women, and NO one on the Idol panel has any investment in any contestant. It shows. After seeing the Voice, I am not even interested in Idol anymore.
And if I WERE still interested, this week’s choice would do me in!!!!! Bad, bad, bad…if someone were making these people change it up, guiding them thru that–maybe. but as is…ugh.

  • jms

The producers need to cut the drugs or whatever is making them really effing stupid this season. Themes, gender gaps, more seemingly blatant manipulation, Lazaro…. It’s getting annoying, it’s like watching senile 150 year olds produce a season.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

I think Lazaro should sing “Wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’” because once burnell is gone, that’s what he’ll be doin’

  • Reflects On Life

On its own, I love this theme. The tunes are very melodic.

Had the themes up till now been more fresh & modern, this might have been a welcome classic.

But given the mothballs we’ve been fed so far, I think this theme would make any viewer suffocate.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

He actually wrote a hit song! “Smile.” LOL

  • EB

    OH MY GOD NIGEL

    That is my first reaction.

Ok, now that I’ve had the displeasure to read some lists of the songs they have written I am led to my second reaction, which is…

    OH MY GOD NIGEL

Those are absolutely terrible. The ones I know are either totally unfit for a supposedly relevant singing contest with singers in their teens and early twenties, or are cheesy, awful dreck that NO ONE wants to hear again.

Songs You Wish You Had Written is a cop-out also. Why not make it a Billboard 100 theme, and instead of the horribly boring Bacharach-David theme, do another genre theme, or just contestants’ choice for once.

  • http://flamingnose.blogspot.com Scott

I was just thinking that. You hit the nail on the head. In the context of this current season, BLECH! But had there been some amazing “moments” and great modern weeks, this could be that one cool retro week.

  • irockhard

Hate hate hate! You gotta understand we’re in S12 now and there’s only so many times this 31 year old who DID NOT grow up on this music that MY PARENTS “boogied” to can endure “been there, done that.”

  • iani

I think Nigel is reading too much the internet and he wants to go further back to 1930s music, or silent-moves sound and playing with the people’s nerves that are maybe more vocal now to hear more modern themes. I see Burt Bacharach is still alive, maybe they bring him. in the audience and also Tom Jones to sing “the pussycat’ song as guest performer.

  • EB

    Hahah

  • Nadine_Bitch

oh my god, I seriously don’t know even one song on that list.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

    …songs of early America?

Now I kinda need to hear Candice Glover turn “15 Miles on the Erie Canal” into a heart-rending exploration of futility in the laboring class. (Janelle Arthur and Kree Harrison can thumb wrestle for who gets to sing the Boll Weevil song.)

  • LeahKittyS

I don’t know, they crammed 14 solos into 2 hours last year after they saved Jessica. Who knows what’s in store…

  • chillj

It wasn’t current in 1980, either.

  • tigervixxxen

How is it not painfully obvious at this point, Nigel has to go!? He is NOT going to change his taste in music and indulgence in it.

  • girlygirl

Bacharach & David have written some wonderful, classic songs. Unfortunately, I would bet that all of those wonderful, classic songs were written prior to 1975 — and most of them were written in the 1950′s or 1960′s.

Seriously, how hard is it to come up with a theme week that allows contestants to sing songs that were actually written in the past 5 to 10 years. There are thousands of songs written since 2000, and if they put in even a teensy bit of effort, I’d bet they would be able to clear enough of these songs to put together a theme week.

Last season the Idols sang (more or less) current songs on a regular basis. So why has the show refused to let this year’s contestants do so?

Seriously, I’m beginning to wonder if TPTB are trolling us all and are actually trying to get the show cancelled. Because I don’t have any other rational explanation for why they don’t want these kids to have much opportunity to come across as a current artist who might actually have some sort of relevancy in the music industry of 2013.

As for “free song choice”? Yeah — I bet free is going to be limited to take your pick from this list of cleared songs. And giving these group free choice will result in a bunch of boring ballads, even if they somehow aren’t handed a restricted list of cleared songs.

  • jpfan2

I love these songs and they’re a good match for the talent on the show. However, I’m making an early prediction that ratings will hit a new low next week! The S5 cast did these songs the night of the finale. Each brought a lot of personality to the songs not to mention a different genre of music. I’m not sure the S12 girls (the boys are just zeroes) will do the same.

  • girlygirl

A House Is Not A Home has already been performed twice on Idol — by Jacob Lusk in S10, and most memorably by Tamyra Gray back in S1.

Not to say Candice can’t perform it ad make it her own, but this would be the second time this season that she would be performing a song that a previous Idol already had a water cooler moment with. Which is always a risky strategy — although it worked out fine for Candice the last time.

    Tamyra’s version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wN4wGxPvpw

  • LA944

Aw –nobody has a soft spot for this clip?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_5l6rIUu4A Well, I hope some do for Paul Newman

  • girlygirl

That was 7 years ago and even then the songs were not anything you could consider current.

I’m a fan of Bacharach and David — I think they are fantastic songwriters. But I am tired of hearing songs that are 40, 50, 60 years old on Idol. There are a bunch of fantastic songwriters who are writing current hits. Why not do a theme week from one of those writers’ “songbooks” instead?

  • girlygirl

Lol, do you mean as his “sing what you want choice”? Because Bacharach & Davis didn’t write that :)

  • girlygirl

Next week’s theme: Songs written by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Cole Porter

  • Madilo

they can find a song they like and fight to perform it but i don’t see it happening with these contestants

  • usedtobelucy

    “Shhhhh. Don’t give Nigel ideas.”

    Oh, you are *so* right!

  • halo9125

So wait- the theme next week is “Songs You Hear In Elevators”?

  • Madilo

if they’re true artists they should make us love some songs we did not even know they existed but i doubt they’re capable of doing it

  • jpfan2

These songs are not really boring. If the contestants had personality they could do a lot with them. However singing them straight without one could produce a very deadly evening. I’ll still like it more than rock night though.

  • usedtobelucy

‘You gotta understand we’re in S12 now and there’s only
so many times this 31 year old who DID NOT grow up on this music that MY
PARENTS “boogied” to can endure “been there, done that.”‘

I got news. Hardly anybody even boogied to most of these. Ever. Very few of them are boogieable. Even for us dinosaurs. …

  • chillj

I don’t have a rational explanation for it, either. My thought was that someone is operating off of ulterior motive, because this is wildly off the mark of what the show should be doing it it wants to stay alive. It makes no sense at all.

  • usedtobelucy

“Next week’s theme: Songs written by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Cole Porter”

You know, I could even go with this if it included — “sung strictly in your *own* completely contemporary style, with an emphasis on lesser-known songs” … That could be a very interesting challenge with a group of real artists. C’mon, rock Begin the Beguine, I dare ya. … And some people could do it.

Under the circumstances, though, we’d just get antique karaoke.

  • irockhard

Shows how much I know, LOL. When it comes to golden oldies I know classic rock and that’s about it. But that’s the point I’m making. If I don’t know Bacharach-David songs, what are the chances peeps younger than me (including the contestants) do? And isn’t this who Idol should be targeting? I.e. the 18-49 demo?

  • Madilo

    who ? lol

  • EB

That is another big part of the problem. This is a group that among them, one had never heard ‘Let it Be’ in their lifetime, one cannot learn and remember the lyrics to even the most popular songs, one only recognized a song on the list from a cleaning product commercial, for a few examples, and apparently, everyone only has 2 days to learn the songs they are given/forced to sing.

So this theme to me is a disaster on all fronts because they may not know the songs, they won’t be creative enough to make them their own upon learning them, and Idol is no longer providing the time, resource and free will to do so even if they wanted to be original. Better to just let them sing what they want.

I hope it turns out ok, but I’ve hoped that for the last four weeks and it has yet to turn out ok, haha.

  • Madilo
  • Sally Smith

Really Nigel!? What are you thinking picking these themes:/ I’d never even really heard of Bacharach/David before. Well at least the other theme “Songs You Wish You Wrote” sounds better! Last season I remember they did this theme and they all seemed to do good. Let’s just hope they pick the right songs and hopefully we’ll have some standouts!

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Seriously Nigel, were you taken over by some Senior Citizen Borg Collective hive based in middle america? Because when people in their 60s are looking at the theme and saying “dayum, those are some old ass songs!”, you’ve got a problem!

And “free choice” my ass. If by free you mean, free to choose any of the 20 songs on a pre-approved list you gave them.

  • http://twitter.com/cindydesigns Cindy Moniz

Maaaaaybe the contestants will surprise everyone and change up their songs into something modern. *hopes*

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Those terms work for me. Much of that songbook updates well to alternative rock or to R&B, and I’d bet country is possible, too. (I can imagine several Hoagy Carmichael songs updated to country, and he’s of the same era and Tin Pan Alley background.)

  • guinness416

I agree, it’ll be better than this week was.

  • curly_yenta

Bacharach/David wrote much of the 20th century’s most beautiful music. Anyone with minimal knowledge of music would know the songs they wrote. I wasn’t around in the 40s, but I know the song “In the Mood”. I wasn’t around during Sinatra’s era, but I know his genius – or Judy Garland or anyone who made their mark on music – all genres.

  • Tommyo2000

This theme would work if they already did a 2000 and beyond theme this year, and maybe a theme from favorite artist…. Then you would have had some modern songs … I am sure all of the contestants most be looking at the song list again (3 rd week in a row) and going, huh??

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Here are some new themes for ya Nigel: “Early Hits of the Gramophone Era”, “Negro Spirituals of the 1800s” or about about “Gregorian Monk Madness”!! You won’t have to spend a dime on any of those songs!!!

  • Hazehel

No problem with the theme really, Idol has always been about moldy old theme week, it’s like that for 11 seasons. Last season the complaint was all about WGWG, this year there is no WGWG because the producers listened to the complaints, and thanks to that we get plummeting ratings. So, [shrug] whatever.

  • EB

Nigel thanks you for the suggestions! Mr. Lythgoe now has his lemmings hard at work compiling a generous list of three cleared songs from each category for our Idols to sing.

  • lila6089

Why are the contestants only given one or two days to learn the songs? What are they doing the other three days? They’re not even out doing the Ford commercials this year, are they?

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Good point. BB&HD’s songbook isn’t even music I generally like, but if it were one “retro” week in a season of generally fresh music and themes, I’d be excited about it just for the weirdness value.

  • tripp_ncwy

I have been thinking the same thing considering Nigel has been very MIA lately when he was all over twitter & elsewhere shooting his mouth off at the beginning of the season.

  • irockhard

What is so ironic reading all these comments is that Nigel has the cheek to call the viewer ‘”morons”. Well Lythgoe – pot, kettle oh so black!

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

    They started them last week.

  • EB

If Nigel is ignoring everyone’s tweets these days, maybe people should tweet Ryan about it. Even if he isn’t producer, have him step in and offer some relevant advice about what the contestants actually would like to be singing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Laura-Corn/100001659368831 Laura Corn

Rain drops keep falling on my head feels more like a brick building.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

Hmm. Actually lots of good songs there, if we had people who could rearrange them.

  • jane

This theme — LOL. All I can say.

  • EB

That sums it up really well.

  • Miz

Seriously? This show isn’t dying, it’s committing suicide.

  • lila6089

    I must have missed it.

  • Miz

That was written by Paul Simon.

  • blackberryharvest

LOL reading the comments here is pretty entertaining. Never change people!

  • tigervixxxen

Doesn’t matter if they had a “songs released last week” theme if the horrid lounge style arrangements are done to them. But yeah, songs from this century would be an improvement.

  • teekee

Ugh! I give up! It is what it is.*sigh*

  • teekee

    Me either!

  • Montavilla

At least they wrote some uptempo songs!

I wouldn’t mind an Irving Berlin theme all by its lonesome sometime — but with the caveat that it not come after four weeks of pre-2000 song lists. Irving Berlin wrote a ridiculous number of great songs. And it would be fun to see them “twisted” with a fresh arrangement.

  • Miz

I’m seriously doubting Nigel is still with the show anymore. He is conspicuously absent.

  • teekee

    Good one! :D

  • Incipit

“I am one of those who doesn’t care if a song was written in 1930 or last
night–as long as it’s a good song. Good music is art and good art is
timeless. (However, I don’t want to hear the same songs over and over.)”

That’s the problem for me, LA944. I don’t automatically assume because a song is from the last ten years, and I probably won’t know it that it will be a bad song. Conversely, a song from any one of the decades of music I grew up with isn’t necessarily a good song. It’s case by case, and it depends what the artists can do. I want songs with good bones, whenever they were written, and I want them to be mostly Songs Not Already Done On idol!!! I too don’t want to hear the same songs over and over… no matter when their Birthday is – and I know that is possible, if TPTB wants to bother…because it has happened for at least one individual. I just want it to happen for the whole damn cast of hamsters! These arrangements are not good, these choices are not imaginative, and the execution and performances are not interesting at all. As it is right now, this cast and these selections are so irritating I don’t even want to hear them any more. But I wish that weren’t so. JMO.

  • supersonic

All I can do is just shake my head at this point.

  • Incipit

Yep – Charlie Chaplin wrote “Smile”in 1936 – covered by Nat King Cole, and done 4X on Idol so far – none of them all that successfully, but there’s the point – if it’s a song the artist thinks they can do something with, and it has good bones, who cares how old it is?Major exhibit – Kelly Clarkson, “Stuff Like That There” – 1945. Tied for the highest all time score on WNTS. And no one has ever dared to try that one since. (Thank goodness) But there are so many untouched songs for every Theme Week. TPTB are criminally negligent in not facilitating new music. IMO. (Only slightly facetious)…

Nigel and Simon are British. They love the classical pop writers, they love the soul writers and singers – 1960s, 1970s. I believe Nigel’s dance show uses more recent music than AI does, correct? So it can’t be Nigel it must be Simon or Ken — or maybe one of the Fox Gods who is making the choice.

  • Rami H

I don’t mind the Bacharach theme but they need a proper big band to accompany the singers, they can balance it out with some current mid/up tempo songs for contestants choice. Here’s hoping :)

  • MissMyEm

That would be Simon and Garfunkle and those may be old but they’re great songs. I’m not championing them for a theme night, but they’re a heck of a lot better…in my opinion…than Burt Bachrach and Hal David. Is Hal David even alive anymore???

  • MissMyEm

I do think it’s time for Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe to throw out their old 8 tracks and get some itunes on their ipods…if they even have them.

Good luck Idol watchers. You know someone will sing “What The World Needs Now”.

  • Larc

Berlin is probably the greatest single writer of American pop songs who ever lived. Even other famous song writers of his time stood in awe of him.

  • jpfan2

S5 had a amazing night of standards. They were all old songs written by Gershwin, Arlen, Porter etc. The mentor was Rod Stewart and it was one of the best nights ever.
What the hell happened to the big star mentors? I’m pretty sure they did the show for free for the exposure. Can’t they even get a Black Eyed Pea to show up for old times sake? It looks like that sour panel of judges are all the celebrity we get for S12.

It wasn’t that long ago that Lady Gaga did this show. I remember Gwen Stefani, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain among others. This year were get Smokey Robinson and I assume nobody else. Weird,

  • http://twitter.com/ItsMyT1me Lori

Wait?! Herb Alpert… Does that mean instrumentals only? THAT would be an improvement!

  • Incipit

Sure, LA944, great movie. That’s why I liked that song when it was on the radio in 1969, actually, although I was listening to, and buying, a whole different kind of music. That was a prolific time for Rock. Then someone turned around and used Raindrops on the soundtrack to Forrest Gump in ’94, and introduced it to all new people. It’s just a good song. IMO

  • jpfan2

They wrote great songs and I have an awesome CD of great artists covering their songs. They provided songs that were turned into classics by r&b legends like Dusty Springfield, Aretha, Dione Warwick and Luther. In no way is their stuff anything like Lawrence Welk’s junk or muzak.

  • g122y

I want an EAgle Theme Week

  • blackberryharvest

Maybe there can be a Kara Dioguardi theme LOL.

  • jpfan2

Some awesome songs that could be covered this week:

    ” Don’t Make Me Over”
—”(They Long to Be) Close to You”
    —”Walk On By”
    —”I Say a Little Prayer”
    —”One Less Bell to Answer”
    —”Anyone Who Had a Heart”
    —”What’s New Pussycat?”
    —”The Look of Love”
    __ A House Is Not A Home
Of course they also wrote more white bread stuff like Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head so who knowa what we’ll end up hearing. The songs are great but you need a personality to make them current and exciting.

  • http://twitter.com/WiltedYouth Tomas

While I agree the theme is as stale as they come, Bacharach/David wrote some really lovely tunes. I could see the contestants doing well here, and if Candice covers “Don’t Make Me Over,” she’d be unstoppable.

  • Ramon

I would love Candice to sing Alfie, she could bring the nuance and the vocal range the song requires…AI please make this happen…Thank you!

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

Put Ryan, Jimmy, and Michael Slezak at the helm.

  • merkureye

The BD songbook is going to give the opportunity for a “moment” to all the contestants next week. This theme is a gift. Hide and watch.

  • WilkesG

I don’t remember them doing two songs each as early as top six, but maybe they are eager to do it earlier just for Lazaro.

  • HopeForMusic

Thank heaven I had already decided that I’d seen enough and no longer plan to watch this season! Yes, there are some pretty songs, but really? Even though Idol has an aging audience, I can’t imagine who in the world would appreciate these oldies.

  • WilkesG

C’mon? You don’t listen to Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head ALL THE TIME???

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

Its quite clear, Idol is now programming for Lazaro’s Cougars…the granny s who would know all of these songs.

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

I pleaded with Nigel to use the song editor from SYTYCD….he’s obviously burned out at this point.

  • http://twitter.com/Lutrell4 Ira

Yeah, but the Isleys, Isaac Hayes, Luther Vandross, Dusty Springfield and Nancy Wilson took those songs to the kitchen, and deep friend them in fatback gravy, and served them up hot…

  • springboard2

If songs have a good melody, it it possible to make them sound current and exciting. It is up to the contestants and the music director.
Unfortunately I find Michael Orland’s backing overpowering cruise ship like, and imo he is one of the major weaknesses of this show.
But this season contestants are bland anyway.
Even current songs would sound dated with this team.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

@MJ, Do you recall the last season this was an actual theme? Was it season one? I can’t recall. But…I really wish Nigel would choose some more current theme –Heck, something form the 90′s will do fine.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Maybe Lazaro can do “What’s New Pussycat” in his tight pants. Might earn hom some votes. Don’t think his vocal performance will.

  • hcpoirot

Such a boring theme. Idol should just get rid of the themes. And let the singers sing what they want each week. I am okay with oldies but week after week. It became so monotone and unwatchable.

Bet we will get at least 10 ballad next week.

  • hcpoirot

Or in Simon Cowell own words. SELF INDULGENCE.

Nigel and co just didnot try to make any effort anymore and maybe just create a theme based on what they like to hear and not what we the viewers want to hear. Poor contestants, none of them (except maybe for Janelle and Angie) got to show us what artist they want to be after Idol cause they got such done to death songs all the time.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Maybe for early weed out–to stress out Laz. Seriously. It’s not like it matters–they will deliver All the girls their verbal tongue baths regardless of the performance–no real judging of the top 5 females this season. We’ll hear again how Amber is the nest Beyonce (Lol)…so two songs or one song…matters not really.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    MJ wrote:

What the hell, Nigel. What’s going on? You won’t even talk to us on twitter anymore!

Even before this season started, I got the impression that Nigel was being marginalized. He seemed to be the last to know about rumors regarding the signing of new judges and Ken’s name is first in the credits as EP. Then, there was that leak of the Minaj tirade to TMZ that went viral. Nigel not tweeting and calling people “morons” is another sign that everything is not good with him.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

In the early years, American Idol had some legitimacy and was somewhat “hip.” Now it is a dredge and a shell.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

Lazaro should sing…The Look of Love. hehe

  • HopeForMusic

lol, yes, you nailed it. I just listened so much that I’m a bit tired of it. lol

Yeah, you’re right. Mostly. I’m just sick of the fact that AI keeps returning to the same composer well over and over and over again. And what they repeatedly dip out of the well is the most overdone, most mainstream, most pop-y, nearly-impossble-not-to-get-trapped-into-karaoki-ing-an-iconic-version songs imaginable. They’ve done Bacharach-David. Let ‘em do something else.

I do have a hard time getting past those cheesy movie songs of B and D’s, though. And there were a lot of them. Those songs — and they seem to make up a whopping percentage of the precleared — did not age well, in my opinion.

  • usedtobelucy

“Nigel, were you taken over by some Senior Citizen Borg”

I have a feeling Nigel’s president of the Senior Citizen Borg.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Okay… convince me that the Idol band can perform a credible, current R&B rendition of… well, of any song. Nothing I’ve heard this year has given me that impression, and it’s tough for the singers to make a song sound current when the band’s making current songs sound like elevator music.

Given enough coffee in my veins, I can imagine very nice R&B, folk-rock, and dance-pop updates of these songs. What I’m having trouble imagining is Ray Chew working with the singers to produce those very nice updates.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I thought the second song was THEIR choice. I am curious if we’ll get to see what kind of an artist they want to be. Can Lazaro sing a Josh Groban song? Oh, heavens…

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Maybe some of them will change it. Will there be a mentor to help this week? I’m old. I love the theme. For their second song, they can sing Adele, Pink, Maroon 5, anybody!

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I was thinking of Dionne’s “Don’t Make Me Over.” “Alfie” is nice, too.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

LOL! I just wrote that before I read your post. This has to be the week she has a real moment!

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

OK, I will admit it. That is my signature. It is a prayer in song and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

They are “missions” like teaching young children to sing. Although, they did go shopping for the second one, which was cute.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Are they allowed to go on the Internet to explore? Can they ask their Grandparents for advice? Research the song and make it your own.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

This may put some things into perspective and explain why this theme was chosen. Now, I understand where Nigel is coming from. http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/01/showbiz/hal-david-obit/

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

    We get Jimmy Iovine.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I think they might be afraid of Jimmy. Someone has to do it, but who?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Honestly, I think those lyrics would confuse him. I mean this sincerely.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Bravo! You understand what some are missing.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

One of the eliminated contestants paid the Rickey Minor Band a compliment when on the Jay Leno Show. Might we be mssing them?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Someone needs to do Dusty Springfield!

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart
  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Don’t you remember Nicki scolded Nigel about showing the list of Top Three Finalists on TV. She said, “Thanks, Nigel.”

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

    Yes, they are/were old.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

The thing is, what if one or two can really do something special. That person would have an advanatge to have a “Moment”. Some are songwriters. There are the lyrics – do something – that is if Jimmy Iovine allows it.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

    There’s hope, isn’t there?

  • JosieX

I think they’re trying to strike a balance between the familiar and the new. They have a very strong guiding principle that people like the familiar, I remember hearing Simon reference it many times when he critiqued a relatively obscure song. I think Nicki has probably been a bigger turnoff to the traditionally loyal part of their viewership than they planned on. For both of those reasons I believe we will continue to have these kinds of themes. I don’t mind it, there are some exquisite melodies in this songbook. The execution could be boring or it could be wonderful. At the same time, I think it’s great to also bring in the fresh and new. A good balance helps AI remain a show that the whole family will watch together. I am looking forward to next week. I’ll miss Devin, he has a voice that could really do justice to the beautiful melodies, some of which I think are pretty complex to carry off.

  • HKfan

Who’s Burt Bacharach and Hal David????

  • irockhard

All that demonstrates is how out of touch Lythgoe is with what the 18-49 demo want to hear on these shows.

  • irockhard

I honestly don’t know why Idol ignores the 90s, especially the rock music of that era. The music of that decade is very familiar with many in the 18-49 demo. Nostalgia works on these shows but nostalgia for someone my age (I’m 31) is music from the 90s, that’s what I grew up with. If we take the high end of the target demo (people in the 40s) Idol shouldn’t be showcasing anything earlier than 1980 95% of the time IMO.

  • Latin2

    One of two things I bet;

    1. Someone high up at Idol is getting a kick back
    or
    2. They are friends with these people.

That would be the only reason I can see this happening every year

  • jpfan2

They’re songwriters who are mostly known for writing classic songs in the 60s for Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin!

  • Axxxel

Didn’t Burnell reprised his audition song in a later round ?

  • Axxxel

Slezak is fun and snarky because he has no real working relationship with Idol.
