American Idol 12 – TCA 13 Panel – Live Blog (Mariah and Nicki Barely Tolerate Each Other)

I’m live blogging the American Idol 12 TCA 13 panel right here… Look for A summary later.

FOX Executives, Nigel Lythgoe, the Idol judges and Ryan Seacrest were present at the panel. Mariah and Nicki barely tolerated each other according to this panel report from ET Online.

If you ask my opinion, the two seem to tolerate one another — barely. Throughout the panel, both made faces while the other spoke and their eyes nearly rolled out of their heads countless times. The more they were pressed to explain the feud, the more they seemed to get one another’s nerves. Needless to say, their fighting will be a storyline (both for the show and for the press) all season long, and is primed to boil over in the live shows once the editors no longer have control.

The reporters present whom I followed on twitter were very taken with Nicki Minaj’s “no bullshit” attitude. They also loved Keith Urban’s pragmatism.  There was lots of eye rolling at Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey.  One of Mariah’s big snarkworthy moments came when Mariah declared “Yay Nannies!” when asked about how she juggled work and “dem babies.” Heh.

Read the tweets below. They are very amusing.

@GlobeRodman: The “Idol” panel is on. Mariah’s in a hot green number. (Keith Urban led her out in a gentlemanly fashion.) Nicki is rocking a demure wig.

@KecksExclusives: #americanidol panel starting at #TCA2013 and #nickimonaj looks like she’s in line at the DMV. But big smile on #mariahcarey face. Cheerup NM

@Reality Blurred: “This is really an American show,” Randy Jackson says of American Idol. Season 12, and he’s still insightful.

@TVGuideMagazine: “This is still the king of the shows and the only one that makes stars, period” says Mike Darnell #americanidol #TCA13

@sepinwall: So cute how Randy and the “Idol” producers keep trying to convince us a female contestant still has a chance to win the show at this point.

@KateAurthur: Oh my god, Nigel Lythgoe is saying AGAIN that the “girls are stronger.” A WOMAN WILL NEVER WIN AGAIN, DEAL WITH IT. #Id …

@BastardMachine: Nicki doesn’t look happy about us questioning the veracity of said fued.

@MattMitovich: Props to Tim Molloy for calling out IDOL’s fake feudery. Now if either of the gals themselves would actually address it…

@RealityBlurred: Fox’s Mike Darnell insists feuds on #Idol are “authentic” and involve “everybody,” not just Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. #mmmhmm

@TVGuideMagazine: “It’s authentic. There is passion on this group and they disagree” says Fox reality prez Mike Darnell on the #americanidol feud.

@TVGuideMagazine: “This is a very passionate panel. There are a lot of strong personalities” says Mariah Carey #americanidol

@realityblurred: #Idol fans are blamed for Mariah, Nicki, et cetera: “they wanted honesty,” “they wanted people who were experts in their own right”

@BastardMachine: I like that Nicki Minaj hasn’t said a word or smiled yet.

@realityblurred: Nicki Minaj has said exactly nothing on this #TCA13 panel for #Idol so far. The passion is evident.

@BastardMachine: Minaj Watch: Two smiles, briefly. Hand run through hair. More later.

@GlobeRodman: Nicki & Mariah asked to say nice things about each other. They both do. Mariah manages to plug one of her albums in the process. #FOX #TCA13

@TVGuide: .@MariahCarey remembers working with @NICKIMINAJ on a song a few years ago: “I did feel that she was going to go very far.” #Idol #TCA13

@TVGuideMagazine: “I say nice things about Mariah all the time. She’s one of my favorite artists” says Nicki Minaj #americanidol #TCA13

@TVGuideMagazine: “I’m grateful for anything nice she or anyone would say about me” says Mariah about Nicki Minaj #americanidol #TCA13

@franklinavenue: Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj re-enacting a potential scene from “Nashville” right now. #tca13

@GlobeRodman: Although Nicki, was in fact much “nicer.” But really, she’s Mariah Carey. #Idol #FOX #TCA13

@thesurfreport: Carey says she was too shy at the start of her career to do a show like #idol. Randy says you gotta have nerves of steel.

@TVGuideMagazine: Keith Urban met Mariah and Nicki the night before they started shooting auditions in New York #americanidol #TCA13

@BastardMachine: Oh, Randy, be quiet. We’re not here for you.

@KateAurthur: Has @RyanSeacrest uttered a sound? He’s the new Minaj. Or he’s a hologram, and the real Ryan is giving notes on ‘Shahs of Sunset.’ #TCA13

@realityblurred: Nicki Minaj just won my heart by saying she won’t send people through just because of their “story.” #Idol

@BastardMachine: Minaj said the judges could sit there and literally do nothing and get paid. Kinda like what I’m doing right now.

@JarettSays: “If you actually listen, we’re giving amazing advice every week” – Randy Jackson, who has never given an amazing piece of advice EVER #TCA13

@TVGuideMagazine: A lot more girls were accepted to Hollywood Week this year, says Mariah #americanidol #TCA13

@TVGuide: .@MariahCarey admits it was really hard to say no in the beginning. “It’s tough to get that rejection. We’ve all felt it.” #Idol #TCA13

@tbrick2: I am actually really liking Nicki and Keith’s answers, both seem to understand that this is a job. #Idol #TCA13

@TVGuide: .@NICKIMINAJ says “I didn’t really have a problem saying no” because she didn’t like seeing passive judges on other shows #Idol #TCA13

@realityblurred: No joke: @NickiMinaj is sounding like the smartest reality TV music competition judge ever. She gets it. #Idol

@TVGuide: #Fox’s Mike Darnell says #Idol judges were tougher this season because “they knew what they wanted pretty d— quick.” #TCA13

@TVGuide: “It’s only human nature that you’re going to get favorites,” @NICKIMINAJ on trying to advocate for particular singers on #Idol

@TVGuide: Nigel Lythgoe: The judges are not mentors, so they get very frustrated too when singers don’t take their advice.

@TVGuideMagazine: How did the Mariah/Nicki feud get resolved? “I put out my sex tape” jokes Minaj #americanidol #TCA13

@BastardMachine: Well, it happened, they’re fueding.

@TVGuideMagazine: “It was one sided” says Mariah. “No it wasn’t!” counters Nicki. #americanidol #TCA13

@TVGuide: Adds Mariah Carey on Idol fued: “I think time sorts everything.” says she doesn’t like that the feud distracts from the contestants.

@realityblurred: Nicki Minaj and Mariah argue, and Nicki says, “This is what America wants. They want drama.” Yes.

@realityblurred: Also, Mariah doesn’t get it. Surprise. (She thinks the drama is a “distraction” rather than the point.) #Idol

@JarettSays: “I don’t think a rapper should be in this comepeition. That’s not what American #Idol is about” – Nicki Minaj #TCA13

@TVGuide: “Rap and hip-hop is completely different from @AmericanIdol..So I would never go on this show as a rapper,” @NICKIMINAJ says.

@RealityBlurred: Basically, Nicki Minaj doesn’t want rap music to be associated with this tripe. I’m paraphrasing. #TCA13

@KateAurthur: Sidebar: I once was at Peter Luger while Mariah Carey was on a date. There were also about six assistants and bodyguards. It was insane.

@TVGuideMagazine: “I know what it’s like to be crucified by somebody because I got crucified when I was nine by a judge” says Urban #americanidol #TCA13

@KecksExclusives: #keithurban says he was crucified on a show called Stairway to the Stars as a kid. I want to see that clip on #americanidol this season!!

@TVGuide: “Putting the fun back in dysfunctional” @MariahCarey says about the @AmericanIdol family between the judges and @RyanSeacrest.

@RealityBlurred: Nicki Minaj’s facial expressions and body language while Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey bullshit are gold. #Idol

@TVGuideMagazine: “The camaraderie with these four was really welcoming. I wasn’t expecting the warmth I felt” says Urban #americanidol #TCA13

@JarettSays: Jay-Z, Bob Marley, Enya – Nicki Minaj’s musical Idols #TCA13

@GlobeRodman: Keith grew up loving country and rock rock greats from Willie and Waylon to Springsteen. Mariah cites a LOT of peeps from Stevie Wonder to Kim Burrell to Al Green.

@TVGuideMagazine: “Without these three I don’t have a career or morning show” says Ryan Seacrest on the new judges #americanidol #TCA13

@TVGuide: “All of my great Idols are up here,” says Randy Jackson about his fellow judges to a notable “aw” from the crowd.

@TVGuideMagazine: 276 singers advance to #americanidol Hollywood Week this year, with boys and girls split between 2 weeks. #TCA13

@GlobeRodman: Nigel Lythgoe says 276 go to Hollywood. Tweaks incl. an audition tour to small towns & boys and girls separated until the top 10. #Idol #FOX

@BastardMachine: “Nannies help me out. Yay, nannies. For real.” – Mariah Carey, ending my interest in living.

@JarettSays: Nicki Minaj & Mariah Carey tried to squash rumors they hate one another at #TCA13 today. They failed. Miserably. #Idol

@BastardMachine: It appears to me that Nicki Minaj doesn’t tolerate much bullshit from others.

So far, I like what I’ve seen and heard from Nicki and Keith. As for Mariah and Randy? No comment. lol

  • ptebwwong

I agree. It seems that Nicki will be a honest judge. Keith seems like he’ll give constructive criticism. I hope Mariah won’t be too nice to the contestants. I’m afraid she will be. Randy-no comment, too. LOL.

What I’m worried about is even if Nicki is the honest judge like Simon I’m worried that the public & Idol watchers have already pre-judged her & won’t give her a chance or the new Idol season a chance.

  • TLB

I’d take that further and say I’m loving everything I’m hearing from Nicki. My opinion on Keith has yet to be solidified. So far, he just seems like a nice guy, which is nothing new especially coming for a male country artist.

Randy’s being just about as useful (or useless) as he has been in past seasons and although I can respect that Mariah Carey is undoubtedly one of the best vocalists in the industry of all time, I feel like she wasn’t as prepared to be a judge as Nicki Minaj. I’m getting the vibe that Mariah expected her past legacy to do 90% of the talking.

Of course, these are just my first impressions. We’ll see when the show airs!

  • tommy

Looks pretty predictable, but Lithgoe loves the publicity that the Minaj/Mariah dustup will cause.  It will probably shakedown like this for most of the live shows….Randy will offer up a buffet of useless overused heard-it-all-before diatribes, Mariah will preen her way through trying to keep her Minaj temper in check doling out loving inspirational blather trying to be coherent, Nicki may be a surprise if she stays blunt and honest, and Keith may prove insightful and welcome.  But of course, we all will watch……

  • TLB

Agreed. Nicki Minaj is one of the most heavily scrutinized artists in the industry today next to Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. People have come to believe it’s cool to hate on her regardless of what she does. Most people have very strong opinions before even knowing much about them.

Let’s hope people are open-minded about this new judging panel. Wishful thinking probably…

  • fantoo1

The press seem to love Nicki and Keith.

  • SullyD

“Nicki Minaj just won my heart by saying she won’t send people through just because of their “story.” #Idol”

““I put out my sex tape” ”

I think I’ve found my girl crush!
This + stank faces = so much win

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that I already love them too. lol

  • Sassycatz

@TVGuideMagazine: “This is still the king of the shows and the only one
that makes stars, period” says Mike Darnell #americanidol #TCA13

Simon Cowell must be delighted that Darnell said this!

  • Mateja Praznik

I guess One Direction  don’t exist or what? Anyway, the only talent show on TV today that can discover superstars is The X Factor. Ofcourse, being on a talent show is just a foundation. If TPTB decide not to continue building (for whatever reason), things don’t move beyond that.

  • ptebwwong

No one counts One Direction because they weren’t contestants on a American talent show. I bet a lot of Americans don’t even know they came from a reality show.

Also, if OD came from an American talent show I don’t think they would be as successful. Many radio people & the music industry in the U.S. already dislike talent show contestants & wouldn’t probably even give them a chance.

American Idol is the only American show that discovers superstars (Kelly, Carrie, J-Hud, etc.) & has many contestants that have had long successful careers (Jordin, Fantasia, Clay, etc.). The Voice or XF US contestants hasn’t had much success so far.

  • raya

Not that I liked to defend Fox, but to me the implication is clearly that they are only talking about US reality singing shows and the stars they have or haven’t produced.  I don’t think they give a crap about what happens internationally as long as Idol produces more viable stars statewise than their competition, which so far it has.  Mind you it’s a little weird for them to voice that when X-Factor US is also on FOX and is clearly the show struggling the most at the moment to find any sort of relevancy, but that is neither here nor there.

  • Sassycatz

I guess One Direction don’t exist or what?

    One can dream!

    Anyway, the only talent show
on TV today that can discover superstars is The X Factor.

The X-Factor on US television has not discovered any superstars that I’m aware of.

  • Kesia Monteith

Look, I know Idol is boring to you, and trust, I really could care less to defend this corny show myself half the time…

BUT…With winners like Shayne Ward, Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke now running out of steam, it’s clear Idol has at least produce two winners in Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood that has some serious longevity. One Direction may be nipping at their heels, but do you think they are really going to last? I mean, Idol has a freaking Oscar winner. And at least Idol has someone as critically acclaimed as Adam Lambert, with the likes of Fantasia having success in her niche market.

I’m not Idol’s biggest defender, but to say X-Factor is the only show to discover superstar, whether it is UK or US, is kind of ignoring the major accomplishments some of the Idol contestants have done.

  • fantoo1

Who from The X Factor US is a superstar? The UK version is irrelevant to idol. They are in no competition whatsoever. The X Factor in the states is who idol is rivals with(although they are the same network), and they have yet to produce anything.

Using your logic, Carly Rae Jespen would be one of idol’s superstars.

  • shell29

LOL…I think Mike Darnell was probably throwing more shade in The Voice’s direction with that comment.

  • Stooch

I generally watch Idol for the contestants, and think the judges are pretty much useless.  But maybe with some catfights and potential meltdowns the judging might actually entertain me :)

  • Karen C

Anyway, the only talent show on TV today that can discover superstars is The X Factor.

Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood aren’t superstars?  And both have longevity in the music business, even more so than any other reality show including UK X Factor.

  • Axxxel

Being a judge on a live show is still a different cup of tea compared to the auditions and “Hollywood”. Much more pressure from a live audience and the producers. I want to see the live shows first before giving any comments on the judges.

  • Dennis

Nicki may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I don’t think she deserves all the hate she gets. I visit blogs with them talking about Nicki and Idol and she gets so much hate. I think she’ll make this panel interesting and I feel without her it would probably just be a love fest and who wants to see that. I hope she proves the naysayers wrong and proves she was probably needed on this panel.

  • jcabby

I can already tell Nicki and Keith are going to be my favorite judges. I have a feeling this season of Idol is going to be so good!

  • jumpstart4u

Nicki and Keith are going to be highly entertaining …  Mariah and Randy, eh – not so much.

  • IvanG

  • Goodvibes27

I’m so over Randy. Nicki sounds really interesting. I really don’t know much about her, but if she is willing to cut thru the BS, I am looking forward to seeing it.

  • Jake Williams

Yay Nicki. Boo Mariah and Randy.

  • Kariann Hart

I am looking forward to Keith and to a some wonderful contestants who can sing…really sing!

  • Jaejae1

I think this panel (Randy excluded) COULD possibly produce a candidate who has good vocals (and I don’t mean just a belter. That style is dead and done) and could have some contempo HR success. Or maybe they could find another really great country girl like Carrie with Keith on the panel.  They just better have more to say then “that was beautiful”.

  • Jason Scott

Ummmm. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. That is all.
