I’ve got some HOT NEW spoilers from The American Idol 12 judge’s round in New York City. The round finished up today.  Next stop is Chicago, IL at the beginning of next week.  And get this–I hear that Randy Jackson, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj will not head to the judges round in Los Angeles until November!

And that’s not all….

The Hollywood Round is set for December.  And get this! AMERICAN IDOL 12 MAY NOT BEGIN UNTIL MID  FEBRUARY.

WHAT?

My guess is that the producers DON’T want to edit the audition episodes until the Top 24 is chosen. Remember back in Season 9, the Top 24 was chosen AFTER the audition episodes began, which prevented the producers from focusing on the contenders who made the cut.   But that’s just me speculating. The mid-February start date is NOT set in stone.

New York City 2nd day audition tally – 11 girls and 6 boys made it through to the Hollywood Rounds.

  • 2 WGWG auditioned. Neither got through.
  • Producers shot a lot around an African American woman with a young child, but she did not get through.
  • Five to six of the guys to get through to Hollywood were African Amercian (soul/gospel). Leaving Only ONE white guy got through!

The consensus on the judges:

Randy Jackson is leading the panel during the auditions. He queues the other judges to respond. “What did you think Mariah?”

Keith Urban is very down to earth.  He talks to the contestants he’s like sitting on his front porch.

Mariah Carey is quiet. Pithy, but brings a lot of insight to the panel. Many of the hopefuls are in awe of her.

Nicki Minaj is the  most colorful and talkative of the judges. She has insight, but her presentation is quirky and offbeat.  She makes hilarious faces.

There are no meanies on the panel. When they say “no” they do it in a nice way.

Also. There is definitely tension between Mariah and Nicki. They aren’t at each other’s throats, but their exchanges are catty. They argued over two contestants today.

Great updates MJ, you’re the best. I’ve learned to only depend on your blog for the latest info…

  • jlscott13

I bet the producers are gonna try their hardest to keep another WGWG from winning. Hehe. You can not stop the power of Kristy Lee Cook ;)

I would love for the new season not to start till February. Everything before the live shows seems to drag on anyways.

  • http://twitter.com/blkeener Brittany Keener

Mid February!?!? That is soooooooooooooooo far away! Maybe this would mean less audition episodes to keep on track with the regular scheduling. (PLEASE!)

  • girlygirltoo

If the show doesn’t start until mid-February they would have to cut down on the audition shows in order to get the finale on during May sweeps, wouldn’t they?

  • annie12120

Is that the only pose Mariah knows? Someone should let her know it aint that sexy or flattering. As for the clown, I suppose odd facial expressions will be her “specialty”. what a disappointing and unprofessional mess. Can’t even enjoy looking at Keith Urban :(

  • Karen C

I would love for the new season not to start till February. Everything before the live shows seems to drag on anyways

Hopefully if they do start late, they don’t cut down on  the live shows.  I’d rather they cut down the auditions.

I wonder if it could be because so few auditioners made it through to the judges auditions. I think it was 30 yesterday, couldn’t be that many today either.

  • mtthew

i approve of these spoilers. as long as it’s friendly tension between the boss bitches (term of endearment here), then i’m all good.

  • mtthew

that’s true. hopefully they keep the auditions to a two week max. i can’t make it through 4 weeks of auditions.

  • elliegrll

Two weeks, four episodes, of audition episodes is enough.  Usually by the third week I’m pretty much sick of the auditions.

I’m worried about Mariah being the quiet one. I want her to speak up, and be as direct as possible. I love the spoiler that Ryan told about her showing a contestant how to sing a song.

  • elliegrll

I think that MJ is right, and that the producers want to make sure that a wide sampling of the people who are shown during the audition episodes are people who will make the top 40 and top 24.  That’s the best way of making sure that people become attached to the contestants.  I think that they did a good job of this during season 9, but not the greatest job last year, or during season 10.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

Love your bon mots Mj and keeping us up on things.   Sounds like Keith left his ego at home and that Randy will end up being some sort of Referee.  As for the later start date, don’t really care if they never put these self acclaimed Divas on the air.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

There is definitely tension between Mariah and Nicki.

I believed it since the beginning. Some people over the internet said things like: “oh, it is impossible, it’s only rumours of mysogynists-manipulative-biased-pro-cat-fighters-womanizer people like Nygel.”

No! It isn’t! Here’s the thing: Minaj and Mariah are two arrogant OTT artists. Fact. When they are male they are usually called douchebags. When they’re female and singers (considering Nicki is a singer) they are called divas. It’s just stupid nomenclature, but it’s a fact most of the time those people can’t get along well. And Nigel knew since the beginning there were a huge probability these things would happen.

The same would happen if you put Axl Rose and David Lee Roth together or Kanye West and… Lil Wayne (I was trying to remember someone arrogant as KW but it’s difficult) together.

    Great job, MJ.

  • fantoo1

My guess is they aren’t starting until February to give the show some “breathing room” with the X Factor. I think airing less than a month after the X Factor finale hurt the ratings for Season 11. I guess 2 months is slightly better.

As far as Nicki and Mariah, I don’t think it’s serious tension. More disagreements over contestants it sounds like. People last year were complaining the judges agreed on everything so there you go. Hopefully their tension isn’t so bad that it makes it uncomfortable for viewers. Maybe more playful tension like we have seen with the Voice coaches or Simon/Paula.

  • judes

Well Keith’s touring dates here in Australia finish on the 3rd  February -maybe he wants a bit of a break before starting the live shows?

  • Venus Hooper

WoW MJ, you’re getting some great press from mtv.com site for your site and reviews/knowledge on Idol!  GREAT job, you go!  :)

  • Ratna12

I hope that the producers don’t just feature the people who will get through to top 24 or what ever, because I don’t think that’s fun at all.
I want to see featured singer(s) at auditions and after all the Hollywood sing off, the person(s) are not good enough to go forward. It will keep us guessing.
Example : I was expecting Chris Medina to get through, so it was a surprise to me that he did not (I did not read any spoilers)

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Now, that is a surprise.  I would like to see the auditions of all 24 contestants, but that won’t happen.  But it would be nice if they provided more than they have the last 2 years.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dionisius.denis1 Dionisius Denis

    what/s WGWG mean??

  • marylouisedwyer

WGWG – white guy with guitar.

  • chillj

Maybe they will cut some of the audition episodes.  I don’t feel pressed to tune in until Hollywood:  Idol usually starts slow and builds, where the other singing shows start big and fizzle.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

At this point in time, I don’t need to see the goofy auditions.  I want to see how many truly talented people Idol has selected for the Hollywood Round.

  • elliegrll

I believed it since the beginning. Some people over the internet said things like: “oh, it is impossible, it’s only rumours of mysogynists-manipulative-biased-pro-cat-fighters-womanizer people like Nygel.”

Actually, even if they are disagreeing, the way that the situation was described by TMZ, “they are already at each other’s throats,” is probably an example of Nigel being over the top, and pushing the meme about women not being able to get along.  Furthermore, I wouldn’t put it past Nigel to encourage them to be catty, and saying that it is what people want to see. Earlier, someone said that the Paula and Randy fights always seemed staged, and I’m sure that they were, and I expect that we will see some staged interactions between Nicki and Mariah.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/CXPO3PBHOP2VW2VWMBWX7L47Y4 meloveschups

OMG……… These judges sound boring with a capital B already… There’s no one with a sense of humour or personality, although Nikki is supposed to be that person, i think she is reigning herself in as she doesn’t want to be seen a bitch. This is what happens when you have to please fans. Simon didn’t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dionisius.denis1 Dionisius Denis

    ah thank you! :D

  • fuzzywuzzy

I totally agree. Everyone (not just Nigel) will encourage “cat fights” (I hate that term) between the women and it will be a self-fulfilling prophesy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Sorry but Nikki looks out of place in that photo….the color choices and notice she’s not TOUCHING the other contestants?  As for why start in February — why not?  The XF ends in December….too close for comfort.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

It’s too close to XF….that wld be a reason for the lateness.

  • MargieIdol

I can’t imagine they will cut down the total number of episodes. It always makes me chuckle when someone suggests this or that the show should cancelled. Idol is the most profitable show on tv. Most of this money is made from commercial revenue. If they want to have the finale during May sweeps, we might get multiple audition episodes per week for three weeks. It wouldn’t surprise me to see 3 episodes a week in february as feb is also a sweeps month.

  • elliegrll

Nicki stands out, which is a good thing.

  • harvestmoon

Wow, MJ, great info!  I’m wondering if Uncle Nigel himself is your source. ;)

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

Just looking at that picture solidifies how much I hate Minaj being on this panel. The only saving grace is that Randy is no longer the biggest Bozo (aka clown).

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

    Lord … she’s in technicolor!

  • jpfan2

No wonder Idol hasn’t found anyone to dominate the Pop charts in years (decades).  Nicki isn’t any more of a “clown” that Lady Gaga is.  Some Idol fans have no idea what a current Pop star looks like. ;0

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

    Lord … she’s in technicolor!

Minaj made it to Oz, while everybody else is still stuck in Kansas.

Being the person who ain’t stuck in Kansas is consistent with her schtick, so being the colorful one probably isn’t an accident.

  • elliegrll

I agree that it isn’t an accident, on her part or American Idol’s.  In the original cast picture that AI released on Sunday Nicki was dressed head to toe in black, and completely covered up, but when they had the judges walk the red carpet, she was in a more colorful outfit.  I have a feeling that part of the reason why she has a wardrobe and hair budget is because the producers want her to standout.  They want the Nicki who is known for her fashion choices, and her music.

She has a brand, and the way that she dresses is part of that brand. AI is paying for that brand.  For Nicki, the way that she dresses is as much a part of her brand as her unique style of rapping.

  • jr8809

Exactly, Nicki’s whole look and persona actually makes her a pop star, Idol fans actually don’t get that.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I noticed the contrast immediately, and of course, it’s all very intentional and planned. I like it.

“Nicki stands out, which is a good thing.”

    Absolutely agree.

  • justmefornow

I totally agree, clown like pop stars are very “In”. Hopefully with the fast pace of change in pop music, something else will soon replace the look.
    Assorted clowns:

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Mariah Carey is quiet. Pithy, but brings a lot of insight to the panel. Many of the hopefuls are in awe of her.”

I like this description and it fits with Mariah’s behavior when she was a mentor. I don’t blame the hopefuls for being in awe of her. Her accomplishments are unparalleled.

  • elliegrll

Successful artists are the ones who can build a brand.  Artists don’t have to be over the top in the way that they dress in order to be successful, but it’s not like it’s something that is new; we have Elton John, Kiss, David Bowie, and others.

And even the successful artists who aren’t as colorful in their dress as someone like Nicki, make sure that the clothing that they wear fits their image, brand, and makes them stand out; such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Bieber, etc.  It’s all about building the right image.

  • fuzzywuzzy

It IS about having a “brand” that fits the artist. Michael Buble is in a totally different genre, but his image, dress, and persona have all been matched with his music and have been extremely successful in building his brand internationally.

  • justmefornow

I agree with you completely about building a brand for success.
And it doesn’t necessarily have to be an OTT look.
Just not a fan of the “Clown” brand.

(And FTR, I found the getups of Elton, Kiss, Bowie just as ridiculous)
    JMO.

  • http://www.jstamers.com/ Jordan Seltzer

I think it’s smart to start Idol in February. XF will be over for 6-7 weeks and The Voice will have aired the audition episodes so the viewers will be turning that off.

  • standtotheright

I like this description and it fits with Mariah’s behavior when she was a mentor

I do too.  If I could have ticked a box, “pithy with insight” would have been my big blue checkmark.

Leandro It’s just stupid nomenclature, but it’s a fact most of the time those people can’t get along well.

No, it’s an opinion, unless you have a link to a peer-reviewed journal article on the subject.

Some people likely want to believe that quote-unquote OTT people don’t get along with others. Lythgoe is willing to exploit it. Until there’s some sort of text-as-data parsing of their interactions, there’s nothing credible to back it up other than the fact that they disagreed about some contestants, which a credible, independently-minded judging panel should do.

  • elliegrll

    From Nigel:
Rumor has it we have a ‘cat-fight’ on #AmericanIdol WRONG! 2 Forces of Nature have “collided” in a good way. Smart, witty and intelligent.

I wonder if Mariah and Nicki had a talk with him about the leaks regarding their “feud” and being at one another’s throat.

  • kaliny

Or maybe they just aren’t fans of Nicki.  Just b/c people may not be into Nicki doesn’t mean they are clueless or don’t like pop.  Just because someone likes country music it doesn’t mean they have to like every country artist out there.  I like pop and have bought some of Nick’s songs but like gaga I don’t think her second album was very good and the act and baby voice have gotten to the point that it’s turned me off to her.  At this point I can only take either of them in small doses.  I like Katy, RiRi, Azealia, Christina etc. I get what Nicki’s trying to do I’m just not into it.

  • Incipit

Eilonwy, I only encountered Ms Minaj once, a video from an awards show that mj posted here, and I’m definitely not her demographic…but I’m not interested in her vocal style, I’m interested in her judging style. After all, I’m not a customer for Keith Urban or Mariah’s music , either.

So I enjoyed your piece very much…especially this:

” One of Idol’s best-kept secrets is how many of the female contestants strait-jacketed into glittery dresses and 5? spiked heels are actually songwriters with real musical chops. They don’t get the “artist” edit or the “true artist” praise from the judges, while the guys do. I want to see Minaj cut through that bullshit, and if she can push the gals to finding their inner Eff You, I’m a Superstar Barbie, more power to her.”

    Thanks for the link!

  • http://twitter.com/KatiesUVULA Katie’s Uvula

OMG I’m on the look out for a WGWG named Adel Phia to fulfill the Kristy Lee Cook prophecy (She came from PHIL-Adelphia so I’m expecting Mr. Adel Phia to win this season)

  • fuzzywuzzy

“I wonder if Mariah and Nicki had a talk with him about the leaks regarding their “feud” and being at one another’s throat.”

lol I hope so, but Nigel may just being two-faced and throwing suspicion off himself for leaking that story to TMZ. I do hope that he’s backpedalling because both Mariah and Nicki together ripped a strip off of him (and I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall if that happened! lol ).

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I was talking more about arrogant than OTT people.

Plz, don’t ask me to prove with an article that Mariah is arrogant, lol

  • julesb2183

Make sense. Two back to back seasons of the Voice and the second season of XFactor barely finishing, it would be a good idea to delay a bit. I also like the idea of them trying to get the Top 40 more face time.

  • fuzzywuzzy

AMEN!  Well said, Eilonwy! (rest of Eilonwy’s blog post is here: http://emuisemo.com/?p=2221 )

  • standtotheright

Plz, don’t ask me to prove with an article that Mariah is arrogant, lol

Fine, I won’t. But I’m still calling “crap sociology” on the whole argument.

  • wordnerdarchie

One of Idol’s best-kept secrets is how many of the female contestants strait-jacketed into glittery dresses and 5? spiked heels

It’s their choice to wear the glittery dresses & heels, isn’t it?  They’re maybe  advised to do so, but they don’t have to.

  • standtotheright

Sadly, I really wouldn’t put it past the same production team that “regretfully” tells contestants that their preferred song choices aren’t available at the same time to “regretfully” tell female contestants that cute kitten heels that would still work with their outfits just can’t get shipped in time, either. “But here are these stilettos if you don’t want to wear those wedges! I mean, they’re fine. Just a little chunky, though. And you know how the camera goofs up proportions.”

  • Incipit

fuzzywuzzy, that quote is from Eilonwy’s link, posted earlier – her blog is very interesting reading – HERE – since I know zilch about Nikki Minaj, I found it an insightful point of view…and a possible direction her judging style could take.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yes, Incipit, I realize that and enjoyed reading Eilonwy’s point of view on Nicki as well. I’ve edited my previous post to include her name and the link to her blog. :)

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Aw, thanks, Incipit and fuzzywuzzy. Clearly, the new judging panel has increased my enthusiasm about the coming season… I have high hopes for how the newbies behind the Coke cups will interact with this year’s contestants.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I ust got around to reading Eilonwy’s blog and man, that was AWESOME. Thanks for posting it, and Elionwy that’s for writing it!

  • roarpen

I absolutely love your blog – and your perspective on Minaj Eilonwy. She is not my cup of tea, but I will read about her ad infinitum when the insights are so sharp and the writing so strong. It’s such a pleasure to read! http://emuisemo.com/?p=2221

  • fuzzywuzzy

“I have high hopes for how the newbies behind the Coke cups will interact with this year’s contestants.”

So we’ve already seen in pictures that Nicki has a Coke cup in front of her. I’ll bet that we never see her drinking out of it though!  lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

The manipulation by Idol isn’t just directed at the viewers. I’m sure that the contestants have to deal with it constantly.

  • elliegrll

I remember the leaks from some of the season ten contestants during Hollywood week, they said that Simon Fuller kept yelling at them to show more personality, and stop doing things that would “bore” viewers.

In his defense, it would be crazy to not coach the kids about how they should act on camera.  The bad news is that more than likely, a lot of Simon and Nigel’s ideas are a bit sexist, outdated, and may not result in the contestants just being themselves.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Oh, I think that straightforward coaching is fine. I was just responding to standtotheright’s post where she gave an example of manipulating the contestants into wearing stilletto heels by implying that the outcome would be negative on camera if they didn’t. And I agree that Nigel and Simon’s ideas are definitely sexist and outdated. lol

  • Karen C

    Eilonwy,

Love your blog.  It makes so much more sense now….

  • julesb2183

AI updated their cover photo on Facebook it has a picture of the judges and it says : Back January 2013

  • debdi

Chicago second round missed out on a number of good people.  What the heck are they looking for?
