I’ve got some HOT NEW spoilers from The American Idol 12 judge’s round in New York City. The round finished up today.  Next stop is Chicago, IL at the beginning of next week.  And get this–I hear that Randy Jackson, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj will not head to the judges round in Los Angeles until November!

And that’s not all….

The Hollywood Round is set for December.  And get this! AMERICAN IDOL 12 MAY NOT BEGIN UNTIL MID  FEBRUARY.

WHAT?

My guess is that the producers DON’T want to edit the audition episodes until the Top 24 is chosen. Remember back in Season 9, the Top 24 was chosen AFTER the audition episodes began, which prevented the producers from focusing on the contenders who made the cut.   But that’s just me speculating. The mid-February start date is NOT set in stone.

New York City 2nd day audition tally – 11 girls and 6 boys made it through to the Hollywood Rounds.

  • 2 WGWG auditioned. Neither got through.
  • Producers shot a lot around an African American woman with a young child, but she did not get through.
  • Five to six of the guys to get through to Hollywood were African Amercian (soul/gospel). Leaving Only ONE white guy got through!

The consensus on the judges:

Randy Jackson is leading the panel during the auditions. He queues the other judges to respond. “What did you think Mariah?”

Keith Urban is very down to earth.  He talks to the contestants he’s like sitting on his front porch.

Mariah Carey is quiet. Pithy, but brings a lot of insight to the panel. Many of the hopefuls are in awe of her.

Nicki Minaj is the  most colorful and talkative of the judges. She has insight, but her presentation is quirky and offbeat.  She makes hilarious faces.

There are no meanies on the panel. When they say “no” they do it in a nice way.

Also. There is definitely tension between Mariah and Nicki. They aren’t at each other’s throats, but their exchanges are catty. They argued over two contestants today.

Make sense. Two back to back seasons of the Voice and the second season of XFactor barely finishing, it would be a good idea to delay a bit. I also like the idea of them trying to get the Top 40 more face time.

“ One of Idol’s best-kept secrets is how many of the female contestants
strait-jacketed into glittery dresses and 5? spiked heels are actually
songwriters with real musical chops. They don’t get the “artist” edit or
the “true artist” praise from the judges, while the guys do. I want to
see Minaj cut through that bullshit, and if she can push the gals to
finding their inner Eff You, I’m a Superstar Barbie, more power to her.”

AMEN!  Well said, Eilonwy! (rest of Eilonwy’s blog post is here: http://emuisemo.com/?p=2221 )

  • standtotheright

Plz, don’t ask me to prove with an article that Mariah is arrogant, lol

Fine, I won’t. But I’m still calling “crap sociology” on the whole argument.

One of Idol’s best-kept secrets is how many of the female contestants strait-jacketed into glittery dresses and 5? spiked heels

It’s their choice to wear the glittery dresses & heels, isn’t it?  They’re maybe  advised to do so, but they don’t have to.

  • standtotheright

Sadly, I really wouldn’t put it past the same production team that “regretfully” tells contestants that their preferred song choices aren’t available at the same time to “regretfully” tell female contestants that cute kitten heels that would still work with their outfits just can’t get shipped in time, either. “But here are these stilettos if you don’t want to wear those wedges! I mean, they’re fine. Just a little chunky, though. And you know how the camera goofs up proportions.”

fuzzywuzzy, that quote is from Eilonwy’s link, posted earlier – her blog is very interesting reading – HERE – since I know zilch about Nikki Minaj, I found it an insightful point of view…and a possible direction her judging style could take.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yes, Incipit, I realize that and enjoyed reading Eilonwy’s point of view on Nicki as well. I’ve edited my previous post to include her name and the link to her blog. :)

Aw, thanks, Incipit and fuzzywuzzy. Clearly, the new judging panel has increased my enthusiasm about the coming season… I have high hopes for how the newbies behind the Coke cups will interact with this year’s contestants.

I ust got around to reading Eilonwy’s blog and man, that was AWESOME. Thanks for posting it, and Elionwy that’s for writing it!

  • roarpen

I absolutely love your blog – and your perspective on Minaj Eilonwy. She is not my cup of tea, but I will read about her ad infinitum when the insights are so sharp and the writing so strong. It’s such a pleasure to read! http://emuisemo.com/?p=2221

“I have high hopes for how the newbies behind the Coke cups will interact with this year’s contestants.”

So we’ve already seen in pictures that Nicki has a Coke cup in front of her. I’ll bet that we never see her drinking out of it though!  lol

The manipulation by Idol isn’t just directed at the viewers. I’m sure that the contestants have to deal with it constantly.

  • elliegrll

I remember the leaks from some of the season ten contestants during Hollywood week, they said that Simon Fuller kept yelling at them to show more personality, and stop doing things that would “bore” viewers.

In his defense, it would be crazy to not coach the kids about how they should act on camera.  The bad news is that more than likely, a lot of Simon and Nigel’s ideas are a bit sexist, outdated, and may not result in the contestants just being themselves.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Oh, I think that straightforward coaching is fine. I was just responding to standtotheright’s post where she gave an example of manipulating the contestants into wearing stilletto heels by implying that the outcome would be negative on camera if they didn’t. And I agree that Nigel and Simon’s ideas are definitely sexist and outdated. lol
