PRESS RELEASE

When AMERICAN IDOL’s 12th season debuts in January 2013, superstar judge Mariah Carey – the best-selling female recording artist of all time – and returning judge Randy Jackson, a Grammy Award-winning producer whose expertise and beloved persona have been instrumental in discovering IDOL talent from the beginning, will be joined by two new judges: quadruple-platinum singer, songwriter, rapper and fashion icon Nicki Minaj; and Keith Urban, a four-time Grammy Award winner who has sold more than 15 million albums.

Hopefuls will meet host Ryan Seacrest and the new four-person panel of Carey, Jackson, Minaj and Urban today, when the auditions begin in New York City. Other audition cities include Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, San Antonio, Baton Rouge and Oklahoma City.

Carey is a multiple Grammy Award-winning global superstar with more than 200 million records sold worldwide and more No. 1 songs than any solo artist in history, whose 18 Billboard No. 1 singles (17 of which Carey wrote) rival all but The Beatles. Jackson is a Grammy Award-winning producer who has worked on more than 1,000 gold and multi-platinum albums, which have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide. His amazing talent, vast studio knowledge, performing, touring and record company experience have made him one of today’s most coveted music industry experts. Known for her unique performance style and iconic fashion, Minaj became the first female solo artist to have seven singles simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Urban, one of country music’s biggest stars of the decade, has four Grammy Awards and 14 No. 1 hits, and was named Male Vocal Artist of the Year three times, as well as Entertainer of the Year, by the Country Music Association.

“I am thrilled about this year’s judges’ panel! We’ve got global icon Mariah Carey and IDOL’s heart and soul Randy Jackson, who will be joined by Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban. Nicki’s an unbelievably captivating international phenomenon who has made an indelible mark on rap and pop. And Keith is another great addition to IDOL – he’s one of the biggest stars in country music and I know that our fans and contestants will fall in love with him,” said Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our incomparable host Ryan, we’ve put together one of the most exciting judging panels around.”

“We’re ecstatic to welcome Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban to the AMERICAN IDOL family, joining Mariah and Randy at the judges’ table,” said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO, FremantleMedia. “Nicki is someone who represents a different side of the music industry, who has now crossed into mainstream culture with her unique artistry, style and flair. Keith is one of country music’s true stars who brings with him charm, wit and knowledge about the industry.”

Executive producer Simon Fuller noted, “With the exciting addition of Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj, alongside Randy Jackson, AMERICAN IDOL’s star power has never been so great. For this we have to thank the ongoing commitment and belief of FOX and the dedication and focus of the IDOL production team. We have all been together since the very beginning and we are focused on making IDOL Season 12 the best ever.”

“IDOL has truly never looked better,” said Marc Graboff, President of CORE Media Group (owner, 19 Entertainment). “We couldn’t be more pleased about this new team of judges, and, along with our partners at FOX and Fremantle, look forward to a terrific Season 12.”

About Mariah Carey:

With a distinct five-octave vocal range, prolific songwriting and producing talent, Carey has defined the modern pop performance. As a singer/songwriter/producer, she has been recognized with multiple Grammy Awards, nine American Music Awards, Billboard’s Artist of the Decade Award, the World Music Award for World’s Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium and BMI’s Icon Award, to name a few. She has two consecutive and unparalleled Billboard Song of the Decade titles: “One Sweet Day” (with Boyz II Men); and “We Belong Together,” further marking her massive presence on the charts since her 1990 song debut “Vision of Love.” Mariah became the second artist in history and the first female performer to have a song debut at No. 1 with “Fantasy” (1995), the groundbreaking collaboration with O.D.B. of the innovative rap group Wu-Tang Clan. Carey’s original holiday classic, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” redefined its place in pop culture as one of the greatest holiday hits of all time when it reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 2011, 17 years after its debut. Carey’s influential and stellar contribution to the music industry spans multiple genres and is showcased through a multifaceted hit catalog as well as a long list of diverse collaborations.

Carey’s ongoing impact transcends the music industry and has left an indelible imprint upon the world at large. She recently made a substantial mark in film with her critically acclaimed role as a social worker in “Precious,” the 2009 film based on the novel “Push,” by Sapphire. A Congressional Award recipient, Carey has generously donated her time and energy to a range of domestic and international philanthropic causes near to her heart, including The Fresh Air Fund/Camp Mariah (a retreat where inner-city children explore career development), Save the Music Foundation and Make-a-Wish Foundation, among several others.

Carey is currently in the studio, writing, recording and executive-producing her next album for Island Def Jam Music Group, with the lead single “Triumphant.”

About Randy Jackson:

A music industry veteran of more than 20 years and a Grammy Award-winning producer, Randy Jackson began playing bass guitar at age 13 and got his big break when he joined the band Journey. A prolific producer, Jackson spent eight years as Vice President of A&R at Columbia Records, followed by four years as Senior Vice President of A&R at MCA Records. However, it was AMERICAN IDOL that propelled Jackson into the mainstream.

Jackson has since expanded into television production, setting up his Dream Merchant 21 Entertainment banner at Warner Horizon Television and launching the hit reality-competition series “Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew.”

While working on more than 1,000 gold and multi-platinum albums, which have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, Jackson’s amazing talent, vast studio knowledge, performing, touring and record company acumen have made him one of today’s most coveted music industry experts.

In 2006, Jackson executive-produced and performed on the legendary Sam Moore’s Grammy-nominated album “Overnight Sensational.” Jackson also teamed with country music superstar Travis Tritt, and most recently, he brought together an eclectic mix of artists on “Randy Jackson’s Music Club, Vol. 1,” the first release from his Dream Merchant 21 record label.

Also a published author, Jackson has penned two books: “What’s Up, Dawg? How to Become a Superstar In The Music Business” and “Body With Soul: Steady Your Sugar, Cut Your Cholesterol and Get a Jump on Your Best Health.”

About Nicki Minaj:

Nicki Minaj is a Trinidadian-born American rapper, singer, songwriter and voice actress. Known for her underground mix-tape presence, Minaj garnered the attention of Lil Wayne, who signed her to his record label, Cash Money. She immediately rose to prominence when she released her debut album, “Pink Friday,” in November 2010. It quickly became a commercial success, peaking at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) a month after its release. She simultaneously became the featured “It” girl on a string of high-profile singles from artists such as Madonna, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Eminem, Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Drake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Ludacris, Justin Bieber, Trey Songz and Alicia Keys. Minaj also has become the first female solo artist to have seven singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time. Her seventh single, “Super Bass,” has since been certified quadruple-platinum by the RIAA and has sold more than four million copies, becoming one of the best-selling singles in the United States.

Minaj released her second studio album, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” in April 2012, which topped charts internationally, and spawned the Top 10 singles “Starships” and “Pound the Alarm.” Since then, the album has sold one million copies worldwide, and has become one of the best-selling albums of 2012, according to Nielsen SoundScan. At the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, she won Best Female Video for “Starships.” At the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, she won Best Hip-Hop Video for “Super Bass.”

Nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award in the category of Best New Artist, Minaj’s rapping technique has been hailed by critics for its use of alter-egos, accents (notably, British) and rapid-fire pace. Equally well-known for her unique sense of style, her use of colorful wigs and outlandish costumes ranks her as one of the world’s leading fashion icons. Minaj is in the midst of her Pink Friday: RELOADED Tour.

About Keith Urban:

In 2001, the Country Music Association honored Keith Urban with its Horizon Award, designating him a talented artist with a bright future. He is the first Horizon Award winner in history to go on to win the CMA’s Male Vocalist of the Year, a title he’s captured three times, and the coveted Entertainer of the Year. More than 15 million albums later, Urban is a four-time Grammy Award winner, who has also won a People’s Choice and American Music Award. He’s won five Academy of Country Music Awards and had 14 No. 1 songs, including 28 Top 5 hits. In 2012, he became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. His latest CD, “Get Closer,” comes on the heels of his fifth consecutive platinum or multi-platinum release. It has produced three consecutive No. 1 singles: “You Gonna Fly,” “Long Hot Summer” and “Without You.”

In 2009, Urban was named radio’s most-played country artist, thanks to No. 1 hits such as “Sweet Thing,” “You’ll Think Of Me,” “Only You Can Love Me This Way,” “Better Life” and “Days Go By.” In addition, his 2002 smash, “Somebody Like You,” was named the No. 1 Country Song of the Decade by Nielsen BDS (based on radio airplay and audience impressions).

But Urban’s reputation as an elite songwriter, musician, vocalist and virtuoso guitarist is no more evident than when he is onstage. His electrifying concerts have played to sold-out venues in Australia, Germany, England, Canada and the United States, all while receiving high praise from critics. In fact, 2009’s Escape Together World Tour, as well as 2007’s Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy World Tour, were both, according to Pollstar, one of the top-grossing tours for their respective years. Last year, his Get Closer 2011 World Tour solidified Urban as one of the music industry’s best live performers.

AMERICAN IDOL has been the No. 1 entertainment program among Total Viewers for the past nine consecutive seasons. To date, IDOL alums have produced 356 No. 1 Billboard hits and garnered nearly 250 million iTunes downloads. Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips’ first single, “Home,” which was released May 23, has been certified platinum. Last year, Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery released his debut album “Clear As Day,” which dominated the Billboard Country Albums chart and has gone platinum, selling more than one million copies. McCreery is the youngest male artist to ever enter the U.S. albums charts at the No. 1 spot.

    How shocking…..not *yawn*

  • thirdtime

Boy, am I glad this is over finally!  Now we can get back to talking about the Idols, yay!

  • http://twitter.com/BamadansPad Danny Latham

Once again, as if we didn’t already know!!!

  • jennyl2

This is such a crazy weird group. Only Keith Urban sounds sane. But I could be wrong. lol!

  • Stavros

I have to wonder if, for the first time ever, we’ll have a female head judge. Mariah and Nicki certainly have more of a presence.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

    Pops champagne cork

    Partyyyyyy time!!!

That pic seals it – I’m ready to roll w/the new season – Mimi, Nicki, Keith and Randy are the judges – bring on the show!

  • Eileen99

Exciting!! Let’s get on with it now!

  • snow_ghost

OK, I’m going to watch AI because this mix could be interesting.   I’m excited to see Keith (for a variety of reasons) and I’m interested to see how the women are going to be.   Maybe Randy will up his game this year.   There must have been some heavy behind the scenes moves to get Randy back on.   They could have easily just had three judges and they could have sat Keith in the middle between the two women.

  • OffLeash

Yay! It’s over! Finally! Surprise!…… NOT. It was a sure thing 2 weeks ago, but it’s good it’s finally official.

Looking forward to Nicki and Keith. Yay! The other two? Ugh. Not that it matters because if The Voice is on at the same time and they have a great panel , I’ll DVR Idol.

  • girlygirltoo

Thank god it’s finally over. That was drawn out waaaaaaay too long.

Excited about Keith, interested to see how Nicki will act. Don’t care at all about the other 2.

  • wkstrack

Like we didn’t already know lol Hoping that none of them become TPTB puppets.

  • clearone

Blech………..who issues a press release on a Sunday morning?

  • elliegrll

The press release is aimed at the press, so that they can have some talking points when they write their articles this week, and those who didn’t know.

I’m excited to see this panel in action.  Hopefully the producers won’t stand in the way of them being themselves, and being interesting.

  • marmom07

    Still Meh

  • elliegrll

I think that Jennifer was the head judge.  Once the live shows started she took the lead, and Randy and Steven pretty much followed her.  I think that the reason why it didn’t work is because Steven and Randy didn’t show any opposition to Jennifer.  They would just acquiesce to whatever she wanted.

I’d like to see some tension on the panel, but in a good way.  Disagreements are fun to watch, and make the contestants look more interesting.

  • whoisthatwoman

    Wheee, so excited.Not.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Yeah, happy the long wait is over. Idol has mailed the last of their reality checks to fans of other contenders holding out hope to put them out of their misery, so it’s ‘keep it moving day’ for TPTB, lol… They have chosen the panel they want, they’ll put on a full court press blitz in the months and weeks leading up to the season to prime the pump for the new season, and Idol life – and life – as we know it will continue. The selection process is over and done – it’s a new dawn, a new day… And IIIIIII… I’m feelin’ pretty good! :)

The question really is will there be chemistry? Star power or not, that’s all that matters.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Yay! The judging panel that’s the dream of everyone!! I’m looking for Minaj leading these inexperienced and naive kids into the refined art of
lip-synch  and autotune (though last performance live on Idol she didn’t even bother to lip synch, barely danced something)

  • Valentin432

    The star power is great.
    The chemistry is TBD
    A 4th judge is bad

  • Nadine_Bitch

I’m okay with the judges except for Randy. I just wish they changes the panel completely.

  • Trina

Like we didn’t already know lol Hoping that none of them become TPTB puppets.

Even up until yesterday when it was more than clear this would be the final panel some were STILL saying they wouldnt believe it until a press release and photo of the 4 of them together and some were still holding out hope for false rumors so for that I’m glad we finally got the announcement.

Thrilled with this. Keith is amazing, I look forward to Mariah, I actually dont mind Randy and I’m super excited to have a CURRENT hitmaker.

  • snow_ghost

What do you mean “mailed the last of their reality checks?”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

“I had a Vision of Love, and it was aallllllll”

Ooops, :)  just jamming along to some of Mariah’s Greatest Hits – that’s in the top 5 of all time faves from her:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tov22NtCMC4

  • snow_ghost

What false rumors?   I think there were people being considered and they didn’t pan out for various reasons.   I didn’t think there were any false rumors.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

The question really is will there be chemistry? Star power or not, that’s all that matters.

Of course there’ll be chesmistry. Chesmistry with the same kind of experiment that can explode a lab . This panel is dysfunctional as the Lohans, and I think they’re adopting Simon’s theory that the possibility of things going wrong live is good. We saw how it worked wonderfully to increase X-Factor’s ratings. heh

  • justmefornow

    So that’s that.
Interesting thing looking at the photo. I noticed right away the divas posing, Keith off to the side kind of casual, and Randy kind of in the background. Interesting dynamic.

  • jdanton2

Could do without Keith but i like the other choices.

  • windmills

Yayayayayayayayay for Keith! Hope he can inspire Randy to raise his game. On a personal level I can see those 2 getting along very well and Randy is the judge who’s been most helpful to contestants after the show, as far as connecting them with industry people and musicians and even producing their music. I think Mariah and Nicki could be good choices too but, it’s always hard to predict what a panel’s chemistry is going to be like. Hope they all have a great time and most importantly of all, I hope they cast an AMAZING t24 that can carry a season.

It’s going to be an adjustment watching one of these shows and a) not skipping the judges’ comments and b) actually caring whether one of these judges is having a good time. This is the 1st time for me being invested in a judge so that’ll definitely make S12 of Idol a different experience. Here’s hoping it’s a fun one!

  • SullyD

Looks like Mariah lost tons of weight, good for her!

Mariah, Keith and Nicki look promising. Still cross about Randy, tho.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Keith Urban… oooo weee, what a fine handsome hunk o’man! Come on ladies, just tell it like it is, lolol… It’s nice for us to get a little something something to peep at on the panel…  I loved this song:
Keith Urban – You’ll Think Of Me

    You’ll Think Of Me

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-oKxpQrRY4

  • snow_ghost

I think Mariah is the spokesperson for Jenny Craig?   She does look great.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4FMUKZUGMQPGIN6CNXMDZ7NH7Y ?????

So, Nicki Minaj is on the panel…
I will NOT be watching this season of Idol. If you compare Jennifer and Nicki – it’s like night and day for me. I’m not saying Jennifer was the best judge for Idol, but you can’t even compare her to Nicki. I can stand Rihanna, Katy Perry, but not Nicki Minaj. I genuinely believe she is one of the worst things that happened to the mainstream music in the last couple of years. She is horrible, she can’t sing, and somehow she has millions of ‘fans’. I don’t understand people who say she’s fun and will bring something to the panel. It really is crazy… I’m sorry, but I just had to let it out. As for the other judges, they are a good combo overall, especially Keith, who was really good on The Voice in Australia. But, as I said, I cannot stand Nicki Minaj, so I am no longer interested in American Idol.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

    Think about it :)

  • snow_ghost

I did think about it.   So that is why I’m asking.  :)

  • clearone

Good question (although I’m pretty certain I  know what they’re talking about!)

Obviously not my choice of panel.  Randy’s ‘Yo dawg’ was boring years ago and Nicki?  Seriously?  They could have at least hired someone who can sing live to be critical of the kids on that stage.

  • http://www.jstamers.com/ Jordan Seltzer

If you look at other comments on postings about this a TON of people say they won’t watch with Nicki on the panel. I personally like her, but I’m not sure she fits the Idol demographic very well.

  • elliegrll

Nicki isn’t coaching the contestants, that job belongs to Michael Orland, Peisha McPhee, Peggi Blu, Debra Byrd, and the musical directors that they have on staff.  Jimmy Iovine will play a bigger role in guiding the contestants than Nicki Minaj will.

Of course there’ll be chesmistry. Chesmistry with the same kind of experiment that can explode a lab . This panel is disfunctional as the Lohans, and I think they’re adopting Simon’s theory that the possibility of things going wrong live is good. We saw how it worked wonderfully to increase X-Factor’s ratings. heh

I don’t think that we can say that the panel will be dysfunctional until we see them in action. And even then, maybe dysfunctional is good. I would call Simon and Paula’s early relationship dysfunctional, but people seemed to love it.

I hope that they don’t hide their individual personalities, and that there will be some differences of opinions, since that’s interesting. Everybody agreeing, especially when the contestants are questionable, is a good thing. What’s not good is when everyone on the panel acts like they are thinking with the same mind, and just repeating each other. They are supposed to be the voice of the viewers, and not all viewers will think the same way, so they shouldn’t either.

  • snow_ghost

I don’t know too much about Nicki, so I’m going to keep an open mind.  She did manage to lauch herself to success, so there is something she can pass on.   I suspect she will be kind to the contestants and not mean.  I think once these judges get to know these contestants, especially the really young ones, it becomes much tougher to “play Simon.”   Only Simon has the mean gene in him.  LOL

I wish they would have moved Randy to a mentor role and left it at three judges.   I’m not keen on him being back.

I hope for some other changes in the show.   I would realy like more behind the scenes stuff with the contestans.   Like watching them struggle to pick material and re-arrange it, look for clothes to wear on the show, etc.

  • mzbet

I don’t give two hoots in a whirlwind about any of the judges except for Keith Urban. Him I am excited about.

  • angiedb

I’m not usually a negative person, but this is just…ugh. This is the first season I’m not looking forward to. Good thing I don’t watch for the judges and can mute, mute, mute. I’m super glad that Randy is still on the panel, though.

  • Trina

I should have been more clear..I just meant some were holding out hope for some of the other names that were tossed around no matter how accurate the rumors were if that makes any sense. For example when I posted on Facebook on Friday about the news coming out of the cattle call one friend said she despise Randy and was still hoping Enrique would sign on at the last minute and another said she hoped the news was a bad rumor so thats just what I meant. Regardless I’m happy all the endless speculation is done now.

  • Caro3278sweet

Rah. I may actually listen to the judges’ opinions this year. Well, one judge. Keith Urban makes the panel for me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

I have to wonder Stavros, will four be the final number for the judges, or will
they revert back to three? I also have to wonder, did they all sign a one-year
contract and this will continue year after year with new judges; MJ do you know?

  • alterego

I am fine with this group.  They are more than qualify and there is a good mix. Mariah is the established industry vet.  Keith is the big Country music star. Niki is the current pop star.  And Randy is the link to Idol history.

But through this drama, one of the biggest surprised names was Nick Jonas. But then he ended scoring a mentor role on The X-Factor.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

I’m a HARDCORE stan for Mariah from the wayback, Not a fan of Minaj’s music but I don’t dislike her  -  I don’t know much about her yet to form an opinion either way, Randy is Randy, whattaya gonna do?  and Keith Urban – have mercy… he’s H.O.T., he’s a helluva singer and guitar player – ticks all the boxes for me, lol… I’m really curious to see what this panel brings…

  • SullyD

Honestly, I think most of Idol demographics don’t even know who Nicki Minaj is, lol.

  • snow_ghost

Oh, but there is nothing wrong with holding out hope!  LOL.   Seriously, why not.  And especially since we had the report that Randy was leaving the judging table just a week or so earlier, and Enrique was on the panel,  I can see why people were not trusting any non official AI reports.    Heck,  we still have the “AI JUDGES FINALIZED” thread here, which of course was wrong.

  • girlygirltoo
  • julesb2183

So Idol in fact is stooping that low and getting Nicki? There wasn’t anyone better, someone who can actually form a coherent sentence? I’ll watch, but I am not going to be as forgiving. Unlike other years, I won’t hesitate to turn off the show if Nicki doesn’t watch herself.

  • ri2

But why FOUR judges??  It’s one too many, if ya ask me.  ugh.

  • alterego

But isn’t that the purpose bringing in someone like Nicki Minaj, who may not fit the current AI demographics, but who has a big fan base outside the bubble to draw them to the show?

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

If you look at other comments on postings about this a TON of people say
they won’t watch with Nicki on the panel. I personally like her, but
I’m not sure she fits the Idol demographic very well.

Nicki Minaj is a VERY divisive figure. People tend to have very strong feelings about her either way. I’m not surprised she has spurned tons of hate posts.

But since neither Paula, Ellen or JLo could actually sing, and JLo spent a whole lot of time grinding and being near nekkid, and Steven had a history of drug-induced debauchery… there really isn’t anything to bitch about with Nicki IMO. Anything you can say about her can be said about some other past judge. At least she actually went to school for this stuff so she’s had training, similar to JLo. She might end up a good judge.

I like the panel though they do seem like an odd mix. I can’t imagine these people in the same room much less working together. It will either be very good or very very bad.

AT least we’ve seen Mariah and Keith do this before. Both were good. So there’s that.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Which is why Idol hired Nicki, hopefully to attract new viewers who will become part of the regular audience.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Chile – you trying to give me a heart attack this morning? *smile*

He doesn’t take a bad picture… And he doesn’t need flashy or outre clothes, makeup or outlandish hairstyles to draw attention to himself… his natural good looks, and natural talent does that, lol… More Keith please! I got Mariah blasting in the crib now, I’m gonna find some more Keith to get acquainted with more of his music – Windmills, if you’re here, any suggestions where I need to start? I may even check out some more Minaj, just to see what her full body of work is all about… yep, it’s Judges Day up in here!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Glad that this circus is over. Major buzz kill for me with Randy still there.

  • snow_ghost

But the outlandish clothes, wild hairstyles are part of who Nicki Minaj is.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“If you look at other comments on postings about this a TON of people say
they won’t watch with Nicki on the panel. I personally like her, but
I’m not sure she fits the Idol demographic very well.”

I think that is precisely the point of hiring Nicki. Idol is hoping that she will help to shake up the viewing/voting demographic, and in the end that she will attract more people than she turns off, for a net gain in viewership, but more importantly, a significant change in the voting demographic.

  • kd29

This is the judging panel that I thought it would be for awhile so I am not surprised.  Love Keith. I think the interaction or lack of between Mariah and Nicki will be interesting. I can’t believe that Mariah ,the Diva, is happy about Nicki being on the panel which could be fun to watch. Simon should have gotten Nicki for the X Factor. She would have been a good fit there.

  • OffLeash

Which is why Idol hired Nicki, hopefully to attract new viewers who will become part of the regular audience.

And she has tons of followers. So many that the ratings might even go up next season lol…

There wasn’t anyone better, someone who can actually form a coherent sentence

Paula could barely form a sentence together, for that matter all Steven knew how to say was “beautiful” so its not like AI has high standards in regard to that type of thing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Corey/100001242253711 Chris Corey

Well finally the judges have been announced. It took so long. This is a very electic group IMO. Lets see if they have whats called chemistry. The Voice coaches have great chemistry while the X Factor judges its too early to tell. Honestly this should be a good mix of judges for Idol. What I am hoping is much more harsh criticsim with this crew. Steven-Jennifer-Randy did well season 10 and the did fine for seasn 13. The problem is the gushing and blowing smoke up everyone’s behind really did the contestants no favors. In fact Phillip Phillips stated the contestants really wanted critistsm and not praise for bad performances.

  • alterego

When Paula, J-Lo came on Idol, they really were no longer current.  The show revitalized their careers.

Niki Minaj is relevant in today’s music scene.  I don’t claim to follow her, but I understand why she was chosen.

  • springboard2

I am very happy with this panel. You’ve better not disappoint, judges!!!

  • SullyD

    I agree. smart move.

  • kd29

The Voice coaches do have a great chemistry. I agree. I even don’t dislike Christina so much this year. I think Adam and Blake and their interactions make the show.  It will be interesting to see if these four have any chemistry.

  • quickjessie

Poor Keith Urban.  To be stuck on a panel with these other three – oh boy.

I’ll tune in for a week or so because I love Keith, but I”m pretty sure my tolerance level for RJ will be reached in week one and Minaj should send me over the edge by week two.  So farewell, AI.

Although I know I’ll be able to come back in a year or so, as this panel is most definitely not filled with long-term judges.  Urban will have the good sense to get the hell away from this sinking ship, the job will prove to be too much for Carey’s delicate self, Minaj will flake out sooner than later, and who gives a crap about Randy.

  • tomr

After being a loyal, faithful Idol addict for 11 seasons, I will not watch again as long as Nikki is one of the judges.  Everything about her turns me off.  Guess it’s XFactor for me.

  • wordnerdarchie

Rubs hands together-this should prove to be very interesting.  I love it!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

She has succeeded in the business -  in spite of that part of her ‘personae’ not being my or some others personal cuppah, but I ain’t mad at her. If your hustle is getting over to the masses, then you’re doing something right. Success, and money, cover a lot of ills and shortcomings. Her brand of ‘crazy’ has plenty of both at the moment.  She and her personae so far are hot – Idol tapped her to see if some of her current hotness will rub off on them.  That’s the key – you gotta be HOT, or perceived to be HOT where it counts to make the cut as a judge on these kind of reality singing shows. Minaj, Urban and Carey have the name recognition, star power and HOTNESS, however subjective that may be, to have made the cut.

  • albean99

Keith is the only reason I’m going to check it out this upcoming season. I was fed up with the show and Mariah wasn’t making me want to watch.  I don’t really know anything about Nicki so will see what she’s like. I wish Randy could be pushed into the mentor role.  Not sure why they’re insisting on 4 judges. Trying to compete with the other shows?

  • http://www.jstamers.com/ Jordan Seltzer

To be honest Nicki fits more on XF than Idol. Demi is more Idol than XF.

But who knows everyone knocked Demi when she was hired mad now they love her.

    Anything can happen I guess.

  • snow_ghost

Oh, I’m on board with Nicki.   I just wasn’t sure you were dogging on the wild hair and make-up.    The crazy stuff has been part of the music scene for decades.

  • SullyD

I didn’t say it is a bad thing. I was giving my opinion on “Idol viewers being pissed at Nicki as a judge.

  • julesb2183

Nicki may attract people initially, but not people who are going to sit through the entire season.

  • justmefornow

I get why they hired Nicki, I’m just not sure she’ll draw younger and /or more viewers. I think that ship has sailed for Idol.

For example, my daughter watched the premier of XFactor because of Britney
    ….for about 20 minutes.
She tuned in out of curiosity and left once that was over.
In my experience this demographic isn’t that interested in these shows. Or mainstream TV in general. They are mostly on the internet.

I’ll lol if this group actually produces still another WGWG winner.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I have to say that I’m surprised about the intense anti-Nicki sentiments. I’m not part of her target demographic (decades older, lol! ), but the little that I’ve seen and heard from her, she hasn’t shown me any behavior that is more objectionable that what we’ve already seen from Idol judges in the past. If Steven Tyler, with his history, lecherous behavior and cursing, was OK for Idol, then Nicki doesn’t even come close to that exceeding that “acceptable” standard. lol

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

I LOVE your positivity on this blog. So needed. Your bright outlook is infectious. :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

No one knows that… all we can do is speculate. What if her presence does entice a percentage of her fans to watch, and ratings go up? I wonder if people would call TPTB or she geniuses then, lol…

  • WestiesRule

I’ll watch I don’t care who is there! Since the new normal is change I’m ready for anything. It’s sure working on the X Factor. Keith has experience because he was doing this in Australia. I hope Mirah brings Nick Canon along for a few laughs and Keith brings Nicole and the kids. I just hope they find some talent.

  • EmmaCT

Dear new judges: Love you all as performers. All I ask from you on AI is honest opinions, see the potential as well as the performance, no running the bus over contestants that the audience seems to like but the producers don’t, and please don’t follow the producers agenda if you think otherwise.

    Yeah, I know…

  • fuzzywuzzy

I don’t know how you or anyone can predict that. It will also depend on who they let through to Hollywood.

  • Montavilla

Glad that this circus is over. Major buzz kill for me with Randy still there.

While I’m kind of dreading Randy on the live shows, I’m actually glad he’ll be there for the auditions.  Not that he’ll say anything interesting, but because he will be a familiar presence for the kids when they get up to sing.

We’ll see how the chemistry goes.

Oh man, though.   Those live shows.  Randy!  Get a writer to help you out!  You can afford it, and it really helped Paula in Season Eight.

ETA: Wouldn’t that be a cool job?

  • julesb2183

My biggest problem with Nicki was her disgusting and scary grammy performance bashing Catholics. Not to mention her twitter rant calling people’s mothers whores because they didn’t like her cancelling shows. They want someone who bashes religion when many of the contestants are deeply religious? Also, she is what is wrong with music right now – the world would be better if we didn’t hear her crap considered music.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

Well, I’ll watch to see if this all works out. But yeah, I agree about Nicki Minaj, because she bothers the heck out of me too. But despite this random stunt casting, I hope the talent is good. I mean, that’s what everyone keeps going on about. That it’s suppose to be about the contestants?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that is the hope of AI, but I’m sure that Simon Cowell thought that same way about Britney (20,403,982 Followers) and Demi (9,261,124 Followers), but ratings fell rather than increased. It remains to be seen if Nicki (14,449,819 Followers) can significantly change the demographic balance of the AI viewing/voting audience.

  • elliegrll

She doesn’t fit the demo that is the loudest online.  The problem is that by pandering to that demo so much the producers of AI have alienated a large chunk of their audience, and created a situation where it’s a foregone conclusion that a white male will win.

The show needs younger viewers to survive.  Nicki may not bring in younger viewers, who see the show as something that’s geared to the crowd that you are talking about, but the producers just couldn’t sit still and do nothing, while ratings for those 18-49 years old took another major hit.

Sully D said: Honestly, I think most of Idol demographics don’t even know who Nicki Minaj is, lol.

I’ve gotten this impression from some of the things that I’ve read, too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wui-Zhuan-Lim/777616348 Wui Zhuan Lim

    It’s still early to say

“I’m not going to watch Idol this year…”

    LOL
Please, you are here for judges or the contestants??
We are not THE VOICE. LOL

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

I been an Idol fan a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME – seen and heard it all, nothing fazes me much about this show or the fans it attracts online, lol… I see it for what it is, harbor no delusions about the games they play, but still can acknowledge my love for the premise of the show, and the contestants they’ve brought to my attention over the years… I think they’re still the best of the singing shows out there, I know they can’t go back and recapture the glory days of old, but there’s still life in the old gal yet. So I hope this new reboot of the judges is enough to spark some renewed energy and interest – but ultimately it’s the contestants and the voters who will make the show exciting. I want one more REAL watercooler moment, a performance from someone again that gets the country talking, just one more time, lol… Seeing Mariah there for me is a plus, seeing Keith is a big old plus (good looking guys are good), Nicki is an unknown quantity for me, so I give her the benefit of the doubt for now… Randy… is Randy, whatcha gonna do, lol… I’m not gonna hate on them before they’ve warmed up their chairs – gonna hope they bring it in their own way.

  • Emmuzka

Please please please be good! I don’t care about you as people, I care about you as providers of good, entertaining, sometimes heartfelt television. Please be smart, quick thinking, honest, and charismatic. Please comment what you hear, and not what the producers tell you.

Randy is dead to me, so Mariah, Nicki, and Keith, I’m looking at you. Please make it good!

  • ANNIEBA

I can totally see why they want Nikki there, she is current and exciting and I am sure she will bring in new viewers just out of curiosity. My WTF is Randy, he is useless as a judge, IMO, and they surely could have induced someone else. Even Nick Jonas would have made more sense, lol.

  • snow_ghost

That is something I hadn’t thought about.  You are right, I would say the majority of the popular contestants (there are a few who break the mode – but extreme talent got them their fans) have been known to have a strong Christian faith.

It will be very interesting to see who gets put through Hollywood week and what would someone like Nicki say to a Scotty McCreery who kisses his cross on TV?

  • SullyD

I know, right? The most outrageous  thing I’ve seem Nicki doing on live TV was wearing a green wig. It’s not like she’s going to sacrifice a baby lamb onstage, lol.
I could expect this negativity for Kanye West, but Nicki is pretty harmless, I think.
I actually think she has a good sense of humor, so I may hate her music, but she’s ok in my book.

  • snow_ghost

I think Mariah must have had something to do with it, because brining Randy back doesn’t make sense to me.   Yeah, someone like Nick Jonas or Miley Cyrus on the panel would have been refreshing.   Or any popular former AI contestant to give the “been there, know what that feels like” perspective would have made more sense.

  • fuzzywuzzy

OK. I can see why you, personally, are not a fan of Nicki’s, but a lot of other people feel differently, so making broad statements like “Nicki may attract people initially, but not people who are going to sit through the entire season” isn’t really valid.

Ultimately, it’s all about ad revenue money, and since being able to charge the most amount of $$$ for a show having the highest ratings in the 18-49 demographic is THE most important thing to Idol, they will do what is necessary to achieve the highest ratings in that demo that they can.

  • OffLeash

The problem with XF is the show itself that isn’t appealing to many Americans, not the judges. I could also argue that Nicki is more current than Britney. Britney is a legend the same way Mariah is. So I’d put Britney and Mariah in the same category. Nicki and Demi in another, but Nicki’s more popular right now.

  • http://twitter.com/ClaudeDee Claude Dee

I DISLIKE NICKI MINAJ AS A SINGER BUT I THINK IM GONNA LOVE HER AS A JUDGE!!!!! Same thing with Britney and Demi! :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Maybe one day they will be able to entice Kelly or Carrie or Jhud or Daughtry to sit on the judging panel. Those 4 IMO have the gravitas and the goods to be more than qualified to come back and offer their expertise and insight from the perspective of a successful artist in the industry, and from the alum perspective. Yep, out of those 4 I’d toss my hat in the ring for Kelly to be the first alumni judge. The OG Idol IMO should have first dibs, lol

  • SullyD

I think Jennifer Hudson would be a great judge. She was on X Factor UK last year and did a good job, very constructive.

  • hcpoirot

Yep, I had see how Keith judge The VOice AUS, he is good judge. At least betterthan Randy jackson. Mariah and Nicki need to be seen.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Nicki Minaj is actually quite polarizing among hip-hop fans and pop fans too, it’s not like Minaj is universally loved. She’s a risky pick IMO.

I personally love her as a judge choice though, because she is highly unlikely to be boring. She irritates me as a recording artist but she could be a fun addition to the panel.

ETA: I have to admit I find the incredibly passionately strong negative reactions to her very amusing. The venom is out of this world.

  • jlynn1205

Now on to hoping for a good batch of contestants. That is what truly makes the show. I do not agree with the statements in the press release about Randy being beloved, the heart and soul of idol, etc etc. The man has hardly uttered one interesting critique in the last two years. He is boring. Plus I hate that Randy is Mariah’s manager and will be on the panel with her. I predict a lot of “I gotta agree with my girl Mariah, blah blah blah.” I’m looking at Nicki to be entertaining and Keith to be the most helpful and honest with the contestants. I’m not sure how Mariah will be, she obvioulsy has awesome vocal chops which makes me happy that someone will be focusing on that aspect since it is a singing show.

  • OffLeash

Unless Kelly replaces Christina on The Voice. The Voice can’t afford to make a mistake with their Spring panel because the judges chemistry and star power is its #1 asset. They got huge talents to audition this season because many of those contestants are excited at the thought of having a one on one working mentoring relationship with very successful artists, and who can blame them?

  • hcpoirot

And why Idol start to follow The Voice and x factor with 4 judges. The season where they had 4 judges (with Ellen) prove to be a DISASTER. The 4 judges comments combine are longer than the duration of one song in live round. Not good.

They should just fire Randy and had 3 new judges. Basically no one cares about Randy. he is the least effective judges in idol. Even Paula are more interesting than him.

I get it if why they still keep Louis in X Factor UK. He is at least can be a hoot sometimes. But Randy just plain boring.

  • snow_ghost

I actually would like to see Durbin, Adam, Clay and Fantasia.    I think they all could add an interesting perspective.    They all have had various degrees of success and turmoil.

It’s not easy been a former AI contestant.  These contestants have gotton a lot of love and hate.   I think I would rather see them as contestant mentors than judges.   I would see this mentor role as someone who would help the contestants deal with the stress of instant fame, the uphill climb for real world success and what it is like to have your personal life viewed under a microscope.   Also the stress of actually being in a competitve situation, where people will trash you just because you aren’t their favorite or you are having more success than their favorite.

The reading of tweeter comments could be part of this behind the scenes portion of the show.   I think it would be fascinating.   How do the less popular contestants deal with the popular ones while on the show?

  • JeanWhite

BIG sigh of relief! It’s over! I’m happy. Will definitely be watching Idol again this year. Happy, happy, happy with the announcement!

“Plus I hate that Randy is Mariah’s manager and will be on the panel with

  • lovetheusa1776

Be interesting to see if these people can do better than Britney and Demi in bringing people in.  Appears though that these shows are simply down across the board from oversaturation.  The lack of enthusiasm for the Idol tours seem to reflect that as well.  But Idol does have the advantage of having been the first and actually producing prominent performers, and the initial excitement of an (almost) brand new panel should be a draw.  But, again, if there’s not some red hot talent, doesn’t matter who the judges are.

  • http://twitter.com/itsonlyidol Itsonlyidol

Interesting mix. I’m keeping an open mind.  I like Mariah and Nicki.  By this I mean I like some of Mariah’s songs very much; she’s on my iPod.  I only know Nicki from her Allure interview and her Starship song (which I heard everywhere).  She’s not on my iPod.  I don’t know anything about Keith Urban.

I think it is SO WRONG that Randy Jackson gets his salary and a cut of Mariah’s too.

And about all we get from him anymore is:

    Yo dawg
You could sing the phone book
You’re in it to win it

Or hear him name drop. They should have gotten rid of him. He is useless and full of himself.

  • fantoo1

Nicki is actually religious so she probably would have loved him doing that.

  • elliegrll

Nicki may attract people initially, but not people who are going to sit through the entire season.

At one time American Idol’s audience was more diverse and younger.  Time and some stupid moves by the producers changed that   It may be impossible to lure viewers back or attract new viewers, but it would be stupid not to try, since American Idol is so important to Fox, and attracting younger viewers is how everyone makes money.

  • mileyfan123

Yay I’m excited!! I think Keith, Nicki, and Mariah will be great judges, and Randy will still be around to be our punching bag haha.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Who are all of those extra people in the pic of Ryan with the new judges panel? I see Ken Warwick there at the back, but no Nigel? lol

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

I think this could be a really, really fun panel! And, thank you, idol, for giving me weekly eye candy in the form of Keith urban.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

IMO Randy being there on the panel with Mariah is no more ‘incestuous’ than having Jimmy Iovine mentoring and pimping and giving singers on his label roster plum exposure spots as guest mentors and performers on the show… Or Simon Fuller being able to secure plum exposure slots on the show to various clients of his at the exclusion of others who didn’t have that connection with Idol PTB or him. Seems to me like everybody scratches everybody’s back in this dirty business. It’s just that Randy’s business ties and relationship with Mariah is more visible and upfront than most. To single him out because of his tie to Mariah businesswise? If that brings him down, gonna and ought to be a whole heap more going down with him. Yep, let’s wait on that happening, lol.

  • Jazz_11

“If you look at other comments on postings about this a TON of people say they won’t watch with Nicki on the panel.”

I don’t even listening to her music, but you know what? ton of people won’t watch AI and there will be ton of Nicki fans watch the show.. so Fox/AI probably already figured this out.

  • EmmaCT

I think this actually is a big announcement to the world outside of the blogosphere; there have been soundbites on a multitude of possible judges, but unless you follow this as closely as the readers at MJs one or two of these names will be a surprise. Like Randy Jackson…

  • fantoo1

Now I’m interested in seeing a press conference with the 4 of them to see what the chemistry is like. I’m hoping it’s not awkward like the Season 9 panel.

Maybe since Randy knows he was almost a casualty, he will step it up? Wishful thinking, I know lol.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Hopefully the ones they scare off are the ones that religiously vote WGWG every year.

  • EmmaCT

My wish for Randy is that he review the tapes from Season 1 when no one knew what to expect from this show – and try to get back in that mindset. There is no “stepping it up” for him – I think he did that when he became the bus driver two seasons ago.

  • fuzzywuzzy

All of the major media have already picked up the announcement of the Idol judges, so the buzz will already be over by tomorrow. lol

  • fantoo1

I’m sure most of it is bs, remember all those people who said they wouldn’t watch without Simon on the panel? Besides, if it’s 2000 people saying it compared to the millions that watch the show, I’m sure it’s not a big deal.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

I love Minaj so I can’t wait to see her on the judges panel. In a way, I’d love to see Mariah prove she still has it. :)

  • fantoo1

Plus her haters will tune in to see “how bad she is.”

  • mileyfan123

The thing with Britney is we have no idea if she did or didn’t bring in viewers. Maybe viewership would have plummeted another 25% if she hadn’t been brought back, because there wasn’t a lot of positive buzz around the show after it ended last year. The other thing to take into account is that Mariah, Nicki, and Keith will each bring in new viewers, because they have very different fan bases.

  • mjsbigblog

I’m hearing that only 30 contestants will be seen by the new American Idol judges today. The kids didn’t get to see them arrive.

  • fantoo1

Ok, see you in January :)

  • merkureye

If I had a nickel for every time during the last 11 seasons, a person declared they were “never going to watch Idol again”, yet continued to tune-in, I would be a millionaire.

I can no more resist watching idol than I can resist eating a homemade cinnamon roll at work.  Everyone’s ”on a diet” yet by the end of the day- no more rolls.  20 million veiwers remain watching AI.  That’s not likely to change especially with this new judges panel.

I can’t wait to hear Mariah’s comments on the Idol hopefu’ls auditions.  I also like the continuity on the judges panel Randy brings.  Do you see the smile Ryan has on his face?  He is thrilled that Mariah is on board and Randy is back.

  • http://twitter.com/TylerWV TylerWV

Don’t know if I will be able to stand the Randy tongue fest over Mariah’s every move.  Don’t know if I will be able to stand Mariah’s love of herself.  Can’t stand Nicki, period.  Keith is another thing lol.  All he has to  do his open his mouth and talk.  Deal Done!  Hope he gets a chance to talk anyway.

  • elliegrll

I’m hearing that only 30 contestants will be seen by the new American Idol judges today. The kids didn’t get to see them arrive.

I wonder how many people do the judges really see.  There’s a contestant from season 10 who revealed that Michael Orland gave her her ticket to Hollywood.  It didn’t seem like she auditioned in front of the judges.  In the past, the producers have also put through people from the Youtube auditions, who may not have had to go through this round.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Hmmm…Keith is lookin’ mighty yummy.  OK, he’ll do.

  • Jordana33

Obviously not my choice of panel.  Randy’s ‘Yo dawg’ was boring years ago and Nicki?  Seriously?  They could have at least hired someone who can sing live to be critical of the kids on that stage.

Nicki Minaj can, and does sing live, but not all the time. She started her career as a backup singer way before she entertained the idea of becoming a rapper. The rapping started almost on a whim, and then she realized that she was really good at it.  If you listen to her songs, you’ll notice that she often does both the singing and the rapping parts. She’s also the featured guest singer (not just rapper) in a number of popular songs, which generally only happens for artists who can sing live.

Anyway, for the first 7 seasons, the Idol panel consisted of 2 judges who couldn’t sing and one judge who didn’t sing live, and that panel seemed to be fine.  Nicki Minaj sings, raps, produces and writes her own songs (often under her birth name Onika Maraj) and she does all of those things successfully. So on paper, she’s actually the ultimate Idol judge! I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings to the panel.

  • roarpen

    About Keith Urban:

Major eye candy for the WWWG lovers – and even for the non-WWWG lovers. Just MAJOR.EYE.CANDY. Hooray – I’ll watch just for him. And Minaj will likely be very entertaining. At least she won’t look constipated whenever she doesn’t like a contestant (looking at you Britney). So far, loving Demi Lovato – I might start watching because I think she alone is so delightful. I have not  watched the Voice this year. Until they produce a star I’m not watching just because the judges have good chemistry. X-factor totally sucked last year, but I’m erasing that from my memory and considering this the first year. But my heart still belongs to Idol – unless they screw up this year. They have lots of competition now. Yum yum Keith – thanks Idol!!

  • fantoo1

That number is about right.  I went with a friend who made it to the judges round in Season 3.  They spread out about 100 people over 2 days.  This was after cutting a ton of people during the producers rounds.

It takes them all day to get through them.

Hopefully the ones they scare off are the ones that religiously vote WGWG every year.

Keith Urban is the quintessential WGWG himself when you think about it.

But seriously, I think he is the best qualified to be head judge.

For every person who says they won’t watch, there are others who say they will only watch for Keith/Mariah/Nicki. I have already seen people on twitter who said they will only watch this season for them.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

    MJ,

Can we have a thread dedicated solely to Nicki’s wigs?

  • Ratna12

Of course Keith was the first to arrive to the audition since he is a Southern gentleman, and by Southern, I mean waaay south from Australia. :)
(Kris said one time that he blames arriving early at the red carpets on his being from the South – something like that)
I’m just going to watch Keith and look at that smile and listen to that accent.

    Nicki, cover up, please.

  • snow_ghost

I don’t know. Many people are religious but do not like people pandering. We will see. Either way, I am looking forward to Nicki being on the panel. I think she could be very interesting. From what I have read about her, she seems like a smart cookie.

  • mileyfan123

It looks like that woman is bowing to nicki in that pic lol

  • http://twitter.com/bagel08 John S

After being a loyal, faithful Idol addict for 11 seasons, I will not
watch again as long as Nikki is one of the judges.  Everything about her
turns me off.  Guess it’s XFactor for me.

But really, do you watch for the contestants, or judges? There is something called a mute button or FF button which could come in handy :)

I kinda see it as ironic that you won’t watch Nicki for idol, but we have another lip syncing diva on X Factor, which you say you will watch.

  • http://twitter.com/KatiesUVULA Katie’s Uvula

I think Mariah and Randy will team up and Nicki and Keith may team up. I JUST WANT A MARIAH/NICKI DIVA-OFF!! *meow*

  • elliegrll

    Nicki, cover up, please.

I don’t think that she can get more covered up than she is in the picture at the top of the page.  I hope she continues to show variety in the way that she dresses.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    “About Keith Urban:

Major eye candy for the WWWG lovers – and even for the non-WWWG lovers. Just MAJOR.EYE.CANDY.
…..Yum yum Keith – thanks Idol!!”

That about sums up my feelings about Keith too. lol

  • Venus Hooper

Cool, judges try-outs rounds, one (1) of my favorite parts, the leaks on “golden tickets!”  MJ what (blog) site is it, the one where her friends carried it last year for her on the golden tickets because she had other stuff going?  I lost the url and rss feed on it!  Can you post it so I can bookmark it again?

    Thank you.

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

Going to guess it’s not just the lip syncing with Nicki that’s a turnoff for the original poster. Nicki’s raps are profanity laced, she has a song called Stupid Hoe, she has multiple “alter egos” and there was the exorcism thing at the Grammys…she is going to be a bit more polarizing to Idol fans than Paula or JLo. She’s a lot more in your face and just weirder than they were. I’m personally looking forward to Nicki as a judge but it’s easy for me to understand why a lot of Idol fans aren’t going to feel the same way.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Welll… just trying to be objective here. Would lots of those same Idol fans have accepted an alum known for appearing and dressing in much the same outlandish manner, peppering some of their material and live performances with profanity – and appearing to simulate a sex act in a performance on live TV? I can’t see the justification for slamming Minaj for actions and other things overlooked as ‘strengths’ and selling points in others… Anyone forget how outlandish icons like Bowie and Madonna and most icons in the music business have been at one time or another? Gaga wears meat dresses, and arrives in pods at awards shows, for heaven’s sake, lol… What makes Minaj so different than other singers before her who said and did ‘outrageous’ things? Come meet the new boss – same as the old boss. In other words – nothing Minaj is doing is brand new, there is nothing new under the music sun, really.

  • mjsbigblog

Can we have a thread dedicated solely to Nicki’s wigs

    We need some gifs!

  • blackberryharvest

    Contestant reaction :)

Melinda Doolittle ?@mdoolittle Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban & Randy Jackson are our AI judges! #notgonnalie I’m very intrigued & slightly excited. You?

Chris Daughtry ?@CHRIS_Daughtry @KeithUrban @AmericanIdol Congrats bro!!! That’s so awesome!

Kimberley Locke ?@KimberleyLocke @dizzyfeet This will be fun season at the judges table!

That’s what I can find so far.

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

How do you know the same people slamming Minaj would have wanted that alum (are we not allowed to say the name? What, is he Voldemort now?) on the panel instead? Unless they’re saying in the same post they wanted him while getting all indignant about her. I was just saying I totally get why people have a problem with Nicki Minaj. Bowie and Madonna and Gaga were never Idol judges. If Idol had been on in the seventies and eighties, some people totally would have had issues with them as judges as they would with Gaga now. Steven might have been wild in his heyday but by the time he was on Idol he was a nostalgia act and they never rile up the pearl-clutchers as much as stars who are currently pushing buttons.

  • http://twitter.com/lifebetween Sophie Gonzales

    KEITH URBAN!!!!!!!!! Oh, the hotness!!!!

  • alterego

Niki is only 1 of 4 judges.  Because on the opposite spectrum, there is Keith who seems like the popular choice.  And Mariah will probably appeal to the traditional AI voting base as well.   Niki is already getting people chatting about her and that’s probably what TPTB wanted.

  • http://twitter.com/shoriagirl Shoriagirl

If TPTB really wanted to change the show, they should’ve replace the producers – the biggest problem with the show.  Since the contestants are already chosen and all the plants are cast, we will get more “stars” that will be pimped by the producers and another WGWG will win in protest. LOL.

I will vote for a guy with guitar regardless who else is there.  Best part – I don’t have to watch in order to vote!

  • fuzzywuzzy

I agree. 3/4 of the panel is designed to appeal to the Idol core audience, and choosing Nicki is to try to shake up the viewing demographic.

  • wkstrack

I think (hope actually) Nicki is fun and honest. I know that a lot of Idol fans aren’t pleased with her on the panel but I like her so idc. So many people say they aren’t going to watch if so and so are gone or joins. And guess what? Those same people come back every year! LMAO Keith seems like maybe he’ll be the middle of the road guy. Not really “mean” but not nicey nice overload like JLO was. I hope Mariah isn’t JLO 2.0.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Once we see who gets through to Hollywood, we’ll probably be able to tell if another WGWG will win Idol. lol

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

I was just pointing up all the objections raised about Minaj’s so called unsuitability as an Idol judge that have been brought up, while the same negatives raised about her could be applied to other applicants – or 99% of our special snowflakes in the music business past and present.  Nobody is perfect, but it seems that Minaj, IMO, was coming under fire that seemed disingenuous and hypocritical WHEN APPLYING THE SAME STANDARD to other applicants and other music icons. I have no problem naming names, but this is a thread dedicated to the 4 new judges. It’s all about THEM today, and I’m respectful enough not to take away any more shine from them than necessary.

  • justmefornow

Came back for an update and saw that new pic posted of Nicki walking unassisted.
Way to go! Keep it up!
Also glad she let the girls get some air. It’s a really nice day today in the Northeast.

    (She’s already entertaining me. lol)

  • fuzzywuzzy

Well, Melinda Doolittle and Kim Locke, both of whom are Christians, seem to think that Nicki is fine as a judge.

  • Karen C

But isn’t that the purpose bringing in someone like Nicki Minaj, who may not fit the current AI demographics, but who has a big fan base outside the bubble to draw them to the show?

It might draw her fans to watch, but it might not necessarily change the outcome of the show, or the type of contestant that does well on the show.  Her fans might just watch for her, and not necessarily for the contestants. They might not vote if they don’t like the contestants that are on.  And I don’t think it is really going to make a difference as much to who the contestants are, because the preliminary auditions have already occured.

So I think it’s possible that it won’t have that much of an affect this year but might next year if different demographics are watching, and auditioning for the show.

  • whoisthatwoman

Oh, please.  Does anyone even care?

  • mileyfan123

I will vote for a guy with guitar regardless who else is there.  Best part – I don’t have to watch in order to vote!

Why would you vote for someone if you aren’t even watching the show? That seems like a big waste of time. If I don’t like something I just ignore it, I don’t obsess over it.

  • abbysee

Not excited, but not repulsed either. Seems an odd mix, but that can be intriguing, so heres to idol! On with the show.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Having Nicki to attract fans in a different demo than the current AI audience won’t be enough to change the outcome of AI. What is key is who they let through to Hollywood and more importantly, the voting rounds. If a WGWG is let through to the voting rounds, then the outcome won’t be any different.

ETA: Also, even if Nicki doesn’t sing well live or sometimes lip syncs, that really doesn’t matter because since recently there have been winners of Idol (and finalists who progressed far) who did not sing well live, that ship has sailed.

  • blackberryharvest

I wonder what kind of top 24 we will have this year-I know the judges don’t decide everything, but they do have an influence-I don’t think Scotty would have made it through under Simon’s rule. Simon was also the one who cut Pia. I really think Steven and JLO had a great eye for talent, hopefully these new judges can do the same. I can see Nicki fighting for some more quirky contestants.

I think we can at least count on having some African-American females in the top 24 this year! I still think its odd how Jessica was the only minority last year.

  • jlscott13

Can you imagine the FACES Nicki is gonna make?! So excitedddddddd haha :)

  • jlscott13

Hopefully, Candice Glover (the girl that was in Jessica + Deandre’s group in Hollywood week) auditioned again. That girl deserved to be in the Top 24, imo.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

I admittedly am a poor loser…they could have announced this lineup months ago since it is obvious Randy is part of a package deal with Mariah.  Probably Nicki also.   I truly believe Mariah did not want an x Idol on the show who might have gotten more attention than herself.  Keith while a real country star will not threaten her.   One can only hope there is more chemistry on this panel than on the X Factor regardless of all the smoke Simon blowing up our a$$es.

  • elliegrll

There aren’t any idol alums who would have gotten more press than Mariah and Nicki.

  • Soakey

Randy is back as a judge?   Im not watching.  Thanks for freeing up a massive amount of time in my week, Mike Darnell.  Glad I wont be watching WGWG#5 saunter his way through the competition this year.

As much as Randy’s presence sucks, the real enemy is the busted ass voting system.   Unlimited votes is the problem, but At&T wont want to to be any other way.

  • Karen C

If a WGWG is let through to the voting rounds, then the outcome won’t be any different.

Not necessarily, if someone else is well liked.  Not all WGWG have gone on to win.

  • alterego

I truly believe Mariah did not want an x Idol on the show who might have gotten more attention than herself. Keith while a real country star will not threaten her.

Actually if that was true (which I do not believe it to be), she would not have wanted Keith Urban on the panel.  He is a huge star in his own right and he and Mariah are the household names in middle America.  And he easily seems to be the popular choice among all 4.

  • http://twitter.com/jlmontana9 Jim

How they ever got Keith to do this gig is beyond me.  He’s the class of this lineup!

  • fuzzywuzzy

In recent years, they have gone on to win.

    Keith Urban YUM!

Nigel Lythgoe ?@dizzyfeet Okay you naysayers. The #IdolJudges are great already. The chemistry is adorable.

  • http://twitter.com/Lillyfield2 Cherry Lillyfield

Not a big fan of this panel, think I will skip it this year

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

Not necessarily, if someone else is well liked.  Not all WGWG have gone on to win.

Only because you can only have one winner per season.

  • quickjessie

For the first time ever, I’m sorry I don’t have a twitter account.

Chemistry?  Randy Jackson wouldn’t have chemistry if he got a set for Christmas.

  • elliegrll

Actually if that was true (which I do not believe it to be), she would not have wanted Keith Urban on the panel.  He is a huge star in his own right and he and Mariah are the household names in middle America.  And he easily seems to be the popular choice among all 4.

I think that all three judges will be popular, even if they aren’t liked by the same people.  As popular as Keith is with online fans, I think that Nicki and Mariah will be the people who get the most attention on the panel.

  • hellomusicgirl

I’m so glad they finally “officially” announced the panel. The back and forth rumors were exhausting to even hear about. I’m kinda meh about Randy coming back. Why?
But I guess we’ll see how it goes. I’ve never felt Idol was about the judges so I’ll wait to get an idea of the sort of contestants they put through to voting this year. I hope they get an interesting, diverse group. I really enjoy Idol as a show so I’m definitely rooting for things to go well next year.

  • Karen C

In recent years, they have gone on to win.

Not all of them, there have been several that were not even close to winning.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

LOLOL… The day Mariah Carey is threatened by any X Idol is the day the winter Olympics are held in hell. She head bitch in charge, always was and will be. Nicki is also head bitch in charge, lol. She may give Mariah a run for her money on the show. If so, it’ll make for great TV and ratings. But for Mariah to be in fear of some pipsqueak Idol stealing her shine? Chile please, lol.

  • Aidolfan

Ugh @ Keith Urban. I think Brad Paisley would have been better. He can relate more to the country contestants for one thing

  • fuzzywuzzy

  • blackberryharvest

Mariah Carey ?@MariahCarey #idol NY auditions – several classic moments so far lol

  • SullyD

    One can only hope, lol:

    “Nicki Minaj ?@NICKIMINAJ
Hahahaha! > RT @justine_minaj: @NICKIMINAJ are you a mean judge?”

I hope the “hahahaha” means “yes” :p

ETA: I hope Nicki is as entertaining on Idol as she’s on twitter, lol.

  • Oksana4626

But for Mariah to be in fear of some pipsqueak Idol stealing her shine? Chile please, lol.

We are talking about Clay, right?

  • Listening

Cool Nicki really is a judge I knew she was throwing us off track when she mentioned people would be okay w/ her delaying her tour yet brought up s perfume line I believe.

I’m kind of worried about four judges though b/c I think it will take up too much time and the critiques wont be as good b/c they’re trying to hurry to get everyone in.

I’m excited though intrigued to see Nicki as a judge.

  • Christopher Auyeung

I’m REALLY EXCITED ABOUT NICKI MINAJ. Love her. I think she’ll provide a much needed breath of fresh air to an increasingly stale judge’s panel. Mariah’s total self-obsession may prove entertaining as well. Keith is even-keeled and sane, which is always necessary.

    Randy needs a new job.

Omigod, what a surprise!  They chose the judges???  How exciting!  (Only I think they meant to do this Friday when the world found out, only forgot.)

I think Idol did okay. But ithis is the most laid back announcement they have ever had.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

lolol – We talking about HBIC Mariah – and HBIC Nicki. Cause the idea of any x Idol overshadowing either of them, especially my Mimi, makes me giggle.

Anyway, AI will get a big bump in the beginning with the curiousity of the new judges.   I am definitely going to watch.

Keith is handsome and seems like he will be kind in his critiques.  Glad Randy is back for tradition’s sake.  Nicki and Mariah seem to be obsessed with their looks and exposing their enormous boobage.  lol

I don’t think that hillstreetblooz was referring to physical stature when she said “pipsqueak”.

    Neither do I..

  • Oksana4626

  • jpfan2

I doubt Mariah is afraid of anyone big, little, male, female from Idol stealing her thunder.  That’ll include all the pretty girls she’ll supposedly be jeelus of if she criticizes them.

Nicki will be no patsy though. So I could see a diva off between the two lady judges. ;0

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

I Luvs me some Kelly – I do. She’s got the kind of voice I like, she’s tough and feisty, paired with what I think is a genuine kindness – she speaks her mind, suffers no fools. She and Mariah have some traits in common, lolol.  I’d like to see how those two would mesh on something like a judging panel. HBIC and HBIC in training… I say this with a lotta love for them both, lol

He’s a good looking very successful WGWG – before we became super aware of WGWG’S, LOLOL… I give him a pass on being a WGWG – If Idol could crank ‘em out looking and sounding and selling like him, I’d be a happy camper! :)

  • HMc

     I love that picture…lol

  • Jordana33

Not necessarily, if someone else is well liked.  Not all WGWG have gone on to win.

But that’s probably because guitars weren’t allowed in the first six seasons of Idol. No guitar = No WGWG.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Interesting.  So Mariah doesn’t have to sit next to Nicki, but she’s close enough to throw a Coke cup at.  And right next to Randy if Mimi ever needs to order him to thump Nicki in the head.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Say your piece after seeing their shit. Hah. Go Idol! I still think this is the best singing show out there. Idol is classic! It’s been a part of my childhood. :D

  • everything

Maybe that’s why a girl has a such a hard time winning – the steroetypes that two women can’t get along, that there will bound to be a cat fight; that Mariah Carey is jealous of those who pose a threat to her, etc.

Funny, no suggestions of Randy Jackson maybe being jealous of the more good looking Keith Urban.

No surprise the guys continue to win.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

LOLOLOL  Fun at stereotypes, that is :)

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I don’t think people are saying “two women can’t get along”. What I listen people saying is that two egocentric divas OTT can’t get along, which’s pretty much the truth.  Idol had two women before, as X-Factor is having for a long time. But those women weren’t anything near Mariah and Nicki. But, anyway, it’ll be a lot of fun, even if it doesn’t work well. Especially if it doesn’t work well. lol

  • judes

Finally – no more “speculation”!!!  Why does Mariah have to look so plastic & artificial? I remember when she was younger that she always had to have photos taken on her best side which doesn’t help!!
I still say Keith will be like Ellen -great fans of the show but he will be frustrated at how much his hands are tied being a judge & also for Keith -the lack of interaction he’s going to have with the contestants- very different from his experience on The Voice.I wouldn’t be surprised if he moves to The Voice US at some stage -where his mentoring skills can be put to good use.

  • SnowFairy444

With the exception of Randy Jackson, who needed to be replaced a long time ago, I’m happy with the panel. I think Nicki and
Mariah are going to bring a lot of fun, crazy moments. Keith Urban is the one to bring balance to the crazy. I guess time will tell, if this group can actually judge. Can’t wait for the new season to start.

  • Larc

Why does Mariah have to look so plastic & artificial?

That thought occurs to you with Micki there???  When it comes to looking artificial, Mariah is a mere sand dune compared to Mt. Everest.  ;)

  • Larc

I guess time will tell, if this group can actually judge.

That has apparently been among the least of Idol’s concerns over the past several years.

  • elliegrll

Idol had two women before, as X-Factor is having for a long time. But those women weren’t anything near Mariah and Nicki.

Yet, people still had the same comments.  People said that Kara was there to take Paula’s job, that she and Paula were fighting for Simon’s attention, and that they didn’t like one another.  On the X Factor UK, Nicole S. is an empty vessel, who maybe went to one audition day, but there are already articles about how she and Tulissa are feuding.  I’m sure that those articles were planted by Simon, just like he already leaked a similar meme about Britney Spears and Demi Lovato.

  • elliegrll

That has apparently been among the least of Idol’s concerns over the past several years.

Ha, there’s a very good article on Hit Fix that pretty much states the same thing. The author makes the statement that Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler weren’t hired to be judges, they were hired for their star power.  Especially Jennifer, and that’s why they made no effort to judge.

I hope that the AI producers have learned their lesson, and hired this group for their star power, but will allow them to judge.  I would hope that the producers realize that not letting them judge results in a very boring show.  It also takes away one of the things that makes AI different from the other two shows.

  • tripp_ncwy

Looks to me like Nicki is rockin’ her MTV VMA hair from a few week ago.

At the end of last season when P2 won I had comitted to not watching another season of Idol.  These three new judges do absolutely nothing to make me change my mind because I do not see how any of them are going to change the demographic of the show or the eventual outcome of another WGWG winner.

I like Nicki, I like Keith and I even like Mariah but I don’t think any of the three will draw in new viewers and even if they do they won’t change who the VOTING demographic is.

AI had a good run for me with 11 seasons.  That’s longer than I’ve ever really stuck with any series except Law & Order and CSI.

Not necessarily, if someone else is well liked.  Not all WGWG have gone on to win

Of course not all WGWG have gone on to win but that’s because there’s one one winner per season.  For the last 5 seasons it’s been a WGWG who won.

Should be noted that of the five previous winners not one of them was the best singer their season yet none of them ever landed in the Bottom 2 of voting.  This is especially of note in Season 9 with Lee who couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket if it were strapped to his back.

Well, in no season except 1 was the winner almost universally considered the best singer (and actually some WNTS ratings were more favorable for later winners than for earlier ones). And the winner hasn’t hit the seal since Season 3.

But please, let’s continue to make every trend in the show fit the WGWG narrative instead of understanding how it applies to all contestants.
