American Idol 12 – Hollywood Week Part 2 Recap and Videos

AMERICAN IDOL: Drama and desperation escalate behind the scenes as the pressure mounts during the intense “Hollywood Rounds” which kick off with the guys, competing on Wednesday, Feb. 6 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Feb. 7 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). The girls get their chance to win over the judges beginning Wednesday, Feb. 13 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) ©2013 Fox Broadcasting Co. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.

Tonight was a huge improvement over last night’s show. We at least got to see some promising male talent. Although, it’s still clear that the producers DO NOT WANT another guitar playing pop rocker to win American Idol. Most of these guys are R&B singers, or country. The closest thing to a pop rocker is Johnny Keyser and he’s either being shown in a bad light or hidden from view.

Could any of these guys win American Idol? Charlie Askew has the kind of off-center appeal that has the potential to attract both mommies who want to take care of him and alterna-teens who relate to his appealing weirdness.  If that kid makes the Top 10, he could go deep.

And speaking of mommies?  Lazaro Arbos is not only a good singer, but his ability to pull at the heart strings could take him far. He’s just got to be careful not to rely on the backstory too much.  At the moment, he’s a bit of a sad sack. He has to stop crying and acquire a little swag., who is also a fine singer.

Paul Jolley, Nick Boddington, Devin Velez and to a lesser extent,  Jimmy Smith are appealing singers.  Like Lazaro, Paul has to stop crying. Out of the 3, Nick has it going on–the voice, the confidence, plus he’s a cutie. However, if good looking crooner, Johnny Keyser, makes it to the voting rounds, all bets are off

That leaves the question–can an African American male ever win Idol again? If Curtis Finch Jr. continues his arrogant ways, he’s toast regardless. Could Cortez Shaw or  Burnell Taylor–fine singers–go the distance. It would be nice if there were a fundamental change in the voting demo this year, but I won’t hold my breath.

I hope the awesomeness that s the American Idol 12 judging panel isn’t just an editing room created mirage. Remember when we loved Steven, Jennifer and Randy in the beginning of Season 10?  Here’s hoping Nicki and Keith don’t get bored or scared once the live shows begin.  Nicki in particular continues to shine in her role as judge. Once again, she called out contestants who needed it. Once again, lecturing Papa Peachez about his non-committal attitude, flat out telling Paul Jolley that revealing his nerves was unprofessional. and then totally calling out Matheus Fernandes for milking his backstory. I don’t believe an Idol judge has EVER done that.  She’s also a champion of artists, even if they aren’t marching to the beat of a conventional drum. She’s wonderful.

Next week? We’ll see what the girls bring!

***

I’ll be live blogging Part 2 of the American Idol 12 Hollywood Rounds right here. The guys take the stage for last chance solos with the band.

The remaining contestants work with the vocal coaches and sing with the Idol band. They can also choose to play an instrument.

Paul Jolley – “Blown Away” by Carrie Underwood – He’s struggling to keep it together. His voice is shaking–he’s that nervous. Mariah suggests that he take a breath. He’s close to tears before he even begins. Once he starts his performance, his nerves leave him, and he sounds awesome.  He posses a strong, theatrical voice with a tinge of country. Nicki says she was irritated by his defeated attitude when he took the stage. She’s looking for professionalism. She’s tough, but she’s  right. You never let them see you sweat. Lack of confidence does not impress. Fake it til you make it, kids.

Lazaro Arbos “The Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga – That was very good, confident even.  And for once, he didn’t break down and cry.

Curtis Finch Jr. – “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri – His goal is to reach and touch the hearts of people. Dude is a real Diva. But not in a good way. Curtis is annoyingly full of himself.  And although he sings beautifully, his attitude is going to kill him if he gets to the voting stage. I have a feeling Nigel knows this very very well.

1st Group Including Paul, Lazaro & Curtis… by IdolxMuzic

Eight contestants at a time. No waiting, no rooms. Lazaro Arbos, Curtis Finch and Paul Jolley, are all through. The rest of the row are heading home.

Devin Velez – “It’s a Wonderful World” – Says he’s not nervous at all. He’s focused, as his performance proves. Devin sings beautifully. Nice, smooth R&B vocals. Keith says he was born to sing.

Gurpreet Singh Sarin – “Georgia” – The Turbinator! Oh he’s strumming a guitar. Indian Guy With Guitar? He’s not great, but he’s interesting.

Matheus Fernandes – “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson – Holy sh*t What the eff was that? He screamed and over emoted his way through that. KELLY CLARKSON IS SOBBING. . He claims that he has never sung with a live band before. O rly?  Did he learn nothing WHEN HE WAS A CONTESTANT ON THE GLEE PROJECT TWO YEARS AGO? Nicki accuses Matheus of milking his sob story, which is totally awesome, by the way.  GO NICKI CALL OUT THE FAKERS.

Adam Sanders, Cortez Shaw, Devin Velez and Gurpreet advance. Matheus Fernandes is eliminated. THANK JEEBUS. His crybaby act got old pretty fast. And for those who did not watch his season of the Glee Project. Yes, he managed to be insufferable in that competition as well.

Cortez Shaw - “Sonny” – More big R&B vocals. Not shouty and shrill this time. A big improvement over his a cappella  solo.

2nd Group Including Devon, Gurpreet & Cortez… by IdolxMuzic

Nicholas Mathis – “Locked Out of Heaven” – He was a member of the Couch Potatoes group.  Dude, a living embodiment of Rerun, can sing, but he’s trying way too hard here.  He gets down on his knees to emote unconvincingly, which is totally unnecessary.  Keith felt like Nicholas was chasing the song rather than the dream. Nicholas begs him for another chance.  Keith is non-committal. He walks off the stage distraught. Nicholas is so not ready for this jelly.

Jimmy Smith – “Landslide” – The judges questioned his star power yesterday during the group round.  After that performance, which was a perfectly nice country-influenced rendition of the Fleetwood Mac classic, I can see why. Zzz.

Papa Peachez -  “You And I” – Oh Papa. “A lot of people who try out for American Idol are more or less puppets,” he sniffs, “I’ve got my own thing going on.”  Yeah, a thing that’s not very impressive. Papa has an interesting tone, but it’s languid and sloppy.   He needs some vocal lessons. Or maybe he’s got to work harder, as Nicki advises. She continues to be disappointed in Papa. She hated the song choice. She tells him that flame she first saw is now completely extinguished. Papa is a little surprised. Or clueless.

Nicholas Mathis and Papa Peaches are eliminated. Jimmy Smith, Johnny Keyser and Vincent Powell advance. Papa bitches that he just DOES NOT LIKE SINGING COVERS. Then why the hell did you try out for Idol? Poor Nicholas literally has a meltdown outside the venue.

3rd Group Nicholas, Jimmy & Papa Peachez – Solo… by IdolxMuzic

Nick Boddington – “Stars” – He plays keyboard. Nick has an absolutely beautiful tenor voice. He sings like an angel. What a range! Keith says he nailed it. Fun Fact: Nick was a member of the awesome group, Groovesauce, last season with Reed Grimm, Creighton Fraker,  Aaron Marcellus, and Jen Hirsh.

Charlie Askew – “Somebody I Used to Know” – He intros the song with a personal story about how he recently broke up with a girl. “I don’t want to be somebody that she used to know,” he says before he launches into the song. This dude is strange and wonderful at the same time. He’s oversinging here, but he’s definitely got potential. And IT. Nicki confesses that she’s  obsessed. “Baby I could say the same thing,” says Charlie. Ha! Nicki declares that Charlie became an artist today. “I glorify weirdness,” says Charlie.  Nicki, truly smitten says, “I’m going to eat him.”

4th Group Including Nick & Charlie – Solo Day… by IdolxMuzic

There was dissension amongst the judges, says Mariah. JDA (wearing a black veil over his face!) Charlie Askew, Nick Boddington, and Mathenee  Treco advance!

Next, a montage of Burnell Taylor and Marvin Calderon singing “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri. Apparently quite a few chose this song. Both advance to the Top 28.

Micah Johnson – “I Told You So” by Randy Travis – Micah is the guy who had the botched tonsillectomy that left him with a speech impediment. This is a very beautiful, spare performance of this country classic. Oh Mariah misses the runs. *MASSIVE EYE ROLL*. She’s so wrong here.

Micah is eliminated. HE WAS ROBBED.  If he was cut because he didn’t add runs to a perfectly lovely song, I’m going to cut a bitch. Sometimes less is more, a philosophy Mariah obviously does not understand. He leaves with a good attitude.

Gabe Brown, Sanni M’Mairura and  Nate Tao are eliminated.

Final Group Including Micha & Burnell – Solo… by IdolxMuzic

The 28 guys who survived the last round are called back onto the stage. It’s twist time. The judges reveal that 8 more will be cut on the following Thursday. And WE won’t find who made the Top 20 guys.

Hopefully tonight is a lot better!

  • jcabby

I hope so too! I usually like these individual type rounds.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

They’re usually the highlight of Hollywood for me :)

  • jcabby

I’m really hoping for some gems. :)

Yesterday’s groups, for the most part, were a snoozefest.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Let’s face it…if they have more crappy dudes tonight…people will tune out for the girls too. Hopefully Nigel pulled his head out of his arse for this one…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

It’s shoooooooooow time – who’s gonna bring it tonight

  • dabney c

Just sing, Paul Jolly. None of the drama please.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

i get an adam levine vibe from him… looks wise

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

he sounds pretty good – once the nerves settled

  • dabney c

ugh, Jolly Rancher – not for me, thank you.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Nicki girl tells it like it is! She’s gonna make this dude cry!! Lol…

  • dabney c

Aaaand here’s Ricky Ricardo again …

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

I totally agree with Nicki. No one wants to hear your sob story. You are there to WORK and be a professional. His begging before he even sang bugged me.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

    Lazaro is cuuuute.

    Just sayin’

  • blackberryharvest

    Good start.

  • Chris

What the heck is Nicki wearing? Its just a lot of fabric, blonde hair and a hat.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

they sound so much better with the music tonight

  • dabney c

CURTIS!!! No no no. That’s Josh Ledet’s Hollywood song!!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

He’s KILLING it – veddy nice, veddy nice…

    Over-dramatic melisma overload. lol

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

i can live with those picks

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

OOOO…. Nicki’s going to go IN on some of these guys, lol

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I like Curtis, he’s the best gospel singer from this season, but he’s a little bit too dramatic, IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/LexieONeill Lexie O’Neill

I thought Paul Jolley sounded and looked great…do wish he hadn’t been so nervous/don’t let it show…but he saaang…

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

If they think Nicki is tough, wait until they get outside the Idol bubble and into the REAL world lol

  • jcabby

Lazaro is an early favorite of mine.

As for Paul Jolley, agree with Nicki. Professionalism is key. He has a nice voice though.

  • supersonic

I hate Nicki Minaj’s voice.  I may just have to mute the TV whenever she speaks.

  • tucker davis

Liked Paul’s voice…not his looking ‘needy’. He’s not getting a friendly edit.

  • caroline conrad

I really, really like the judges especially Nicki.  But, I’ve never seen so poor a group of contestants.  I’m usually “hooked” on a few by now and I can’t find one I find compelling.  I’m just confused.  If the girls are better then they should have started with them.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

I didn’t realize he was gay until he sang Gaga. His flame really shone on that tune lol

  • http://twitter.com/LexieONeill Lexie O’Neill

No groups in rooms?  They’re messing with the format too much…

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

Today’s head scarves provided by Erykah Badu

  • dabney c

Devin Velez is a good singer. Not as cute as the Biebs, though, so maybe he’s good BoyBand material.

  • dabney c

    SGWG!

  • jcabby

    Much better Cortez! Much better!

  • dabney c

Matheus’ voice nothing special.  He’s a bit OTT for me.

  • HermeticallySealed

I’ve never gotten hooked on anyone until top 8 or so, so seems like a pretty average group for this time in the show.  I do like this format better, though.  Gives more time per individual.

  • elliegrll

I’m sick of them pretending that the reject from Glee has never performed in public before, or that he never had the chance to get his shot at stardom.  That’s insulting.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Terrible runs at the beginning, very cliché, why are they all praising this blonde guy?

  • dabney c

OMG, Nicki! LOL! Pity party – ha.

  • HermeticallySealed

Thank you, Nicki for saying what we all have been thinking.  Stop milking the sob story.

  • Tera2

Devin and Cortez are good singers with good voices.  Cortez showed Nicky Minaj he’s pretty good and she’s off in her judgement.

  • jcabby

I *heart* Nicki. She called out that pity party nonsense. So tired of it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

ooooo, she’s keeping it real w/him – milking his height – right on the money

  • tucker davis

Cortez is really cute & sounds great! Hope he goes much farther!

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Matteus is annoying. Hobbit or not…just glad he’s gone.

  • willis88

We can all say this is going better than yesterday.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

little dude got the ax – lol

  • tucker davis

Nicki was right about milking the sob story…glad she called him on it.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5HGXDY5SA4QJRME7OQJXRJYE4M James M.

I agree with Nicki, although TBH, there are a lot of things I’d prefer her harping on over a guy being overly emotional, dramatic, and nervous. Curtis isn’t outward about it, but he does come off more unprofessional due to the attitude. I don’t find Curtis all that annoying, though.

  • Tera2

I remember Matehus from glee project.  He was good enough for Glee, but his vocals isn’t strong enough for idol.  I think he should tried to go focus on something like stage shows where he can act and sing and be part of a group ensemble.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5HGXDY5SA4QJRME7OQJXRJYE4M James M.

These are my favorite Hollywood episodes. The drama of round 1 and the group round is mostly curbed for the final round.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

    This was terrible.

“I got 2 kids” – good for you.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5HGXDY5SA4QJRME7OQJXRJYE4M James M.

I’ve sang Edge of Glory and I’m a straight man >_>.

Unless I missed the way he performed it? I’m still on the West Coast and basing my comments off other comments and MJ.

  • jcabby

    Great critique by Keith!

  • elliegrll

The sad thing is that it wasn’t even a good sob story.  He’s short, so what?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

ooooo… she taking papa peachez downnn

  • Stavros

Love or hate Nicki, you have to admire how real she is.  She’s attacks all those things that the rest of us rolls our eyes at–constantly playing up the sob story, going down on your knees to sing–that no other judge would dare to act annoyed with or call out that contestant on it.

  • justmefornow

Just turned this on. This Peaches dude is a total trainwreck. Why is he so full of himself ?
He’s in for a rude wake-up call of reality.

  • jcabby

Nicki and Keith are on the money so far tonight.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

It isn’t a trainwreck like yesterday but all the singers they’ve shown are being too self-indulgentent and mediocre. They really want to show the men as weak singers this season.

  • caroline conrad

Nicki really gets it!  Love her.  She is exactly what is needed on Idol.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

she ain’t takin’ no shorts – I hope she stays this honest going forward with the girls and the live rounds… keepin’ it real is alright by me

  • Niall

If Nicki can carry this on point, much needed tough love to the live shows, she might end up being the best judge this show has ever had. I don’t always agree with her but she has an artistic point of view that guides her critiques. She’s sitting there disinterested or tossing meaningless platitudes.

  • dabney c

What the heck does Nicki want from Papa Peachez? He’s doing exactly what he did in the audition rounds. :-|

  • Tera2

I see some good singers with no star quality with this male groups.  And finally Jimmy stepped on stage and he has the whole package – he looks good, sang well and has a good voice too.  He should be put in top 24.

  • caroline conrad

Papa lost his personality in his performance tonight.  He blended in.  I liked him and was disappointed too.  Jimmy was good.

  • jtgraffix

does jimmy play guitar? if so, game over…

  • dabney c

    Jimmy’s gonna win, isn’t he.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

cock-eyed johnny made it through? lololol

  • justmefornow

I don’t think they have to try too hard. They are weak this season.
Weak voices and either self indulgent or wimpy personalities. Yuck.

  • dabney c

Nick is a Phil Stacy doppelganger.

    … or Daniel Powter

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

this is more like it! yassssssssssss, dude is hot

  • jtgraffix

nick is like a phil stacey/matt giraud fusion. i like it

  • caroline conrad

Okay.  I loved Nick.  His voice grabbed me.

  • Tera2

Nick that just sang was born to sing.  He was perfect and has a great voice.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I believe they are cutting good male singers and not even showing their performances.

  • dabney c

I adore Charlie Askew. He’s so unusually watchable.

  • justmefornow

Now there’s a 17 yr. old that’s actually believable singing a song like that. I like him.

  • jcabby

    I love Charlie! He’s awesome.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Charlie is good. My favorite. He’s going far. And we saw he plays the guitar ;)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

Has Gabe sang? I’ve been in and out, and don’t want to miss him

  • http://www.facebook.com/esther.macha Esther Macha

Love Charlie reminds me of Benny from Benny and Joon movie

  • genius13

Nikki’s comments to mateues were spot on..

  • genius13

Devin Velez voice is killer!!! Cortez was really good too…I’m pleasantly surprised by some of the performances tonight

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I TOLD y’all shit was gonna get weird (in a good way) with Charlie!!  PLEASE let him make the voting rounds!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

    ooo… kinda pitchy dawggg, hahaha

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

    sublime…. wonderful voice

  • KelseyW

Hope to see some good solos tonight.

Great to see the Idol band! And no Idol…This isn’t the first time some of these guys will be performing with instruments. Since it looks like you ended the ban on using instruments during auditions last season.

Remember when peeps were complaining about the previous judges lack of criticism in favor of being nice to everyone(well almost everyone)? Thanks Nicki! :D I hope the constructive criticism continues once the live shows start.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Mariah was right, no risks at all. This is way self-indulgent, not that I’m a fan of OTT singing, but it seemed that he was recording backup vocals for someone.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

    Charlie gave me chills. lol

  • http://twitter.com/ronnydias Ronny Dias

I’ve enjoyed far too many performances tonight, compared to last night’s. Indeed, what a difference a day makes! ;)

  • jcabby

    Let’s go Micah!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

wowowow… i thought he was a lock to go through…

  • jcabby

Ugh. I liked Micah. Love his positive attitude.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PSHFTD4YV3QOE3INABJUXZSWMU hillstreetblooz

    nooooooooooooooooooooo – gabe got cut???

  • dabney c

Awww, nooo! Micah was good! He should have made the voting rounds.

ETA: wait, what? Gabe Brown got cut? Aaaaargh! What are they DOING!!!

  • caroline conrad

Huh?  Don’t get that at all.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

These guys were pretty boring and pedestrian. Not maybe cuties either. They’re gonna stack the deck any way they can to make sure a girl wins…

  • elliegrll

That little twist would have made sense if the sides weren’t even, and there was a chance that we could have more girls than boys.  The boys would have known that only 20 of them could continue, so why not cast 20 guys or so, and let them have the threat that if a girl is better that she could knock them out of the competition.

There really should be a boy versus girl competition to make up the top 24 or even the top 13.

  • jcabby

    Nate got cut too?! UGH!!!

  • Tera2

I looks forward to the girls turn next week.  There will be star potential there, but there will be more drama than guys I’m sure.

  • tucker davis

Ok, does anyone remember a contestant that went deep in the competition being so emotional during HW week? It seems so many of these are extremely emotional.

  • dabney c

What? Where did you hear that Nate got cut? That can’t be. Cannot BE!!!!  :”(

  • KelseyW

Aww…I’m sad to see Nate go. I thought he had a lovely voice. :( Happy that Charlie is still there though. I really like him.

So I guess Vegas Week is indeed happening then if they still need to eliminate more people?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5HGXDY5SA4QJRME7OQJXRJYE4M James M.

    Worst twist ever

  • jcabby

They showed it towards the end. I am so sad about Nate and Micah. UGH. UGH. UGH. At least Charlie got through.

  • John M

The girls will get less screen time since next thursday will be devoted to the cuts. If the guys got less screentime people would be so upset about how it was rigged against them lol.

  • chillj

These guys tonight seemed a little…broken.  It was almost sad, not glorious.  This is the first I watched and I’m in for N. Boddington and Big Blue Sneaks.

  • kayd23

I really liked Devin, Jimmy, and Charlie for different reasons. Sad to see Gabe not make it.

  • blackberryharvest

A lot better than last night! Some good singes. Looking forward to the girls next week.

  • elliegrll

Based on the preview the lack of screentime will be balanced out by comparing them to the boys, A LOT, and heaping a lot of praise on them.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5HGXDY5SA4QJRME7OQJXRJYE4M James M.

    Watching the videos.

I thought Nicki was unnecessarily harsh on Paul and she should’ve added something about his singing. And I don’t think he was being “unprofessional”, either. Huge points for her honesty, though. It only gets tougher from here, the world’s a bitch, good on Nicki for being tough. should’ve been “tough love” IMO….. oh, and he sang pretty well too. I wasn’t ever really a fan of Clay Aiken, though.

Lazaro showed as much flame in that performance as a burnt out candle. Wtf? Also pretty well sung.

Curtis has really tiny eyes and a good voice. If anything, his attitude about Charlie yesterday was more “unprofessional” than Paul.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

I think the boys realized how bad they were during group rounds, and the poor thangs look exhausted. Especially those who were given warnings before, they feel the added pressure. Poor Paul Jolley, he looked like he could die from nerves alone.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

Micah was robbed. Such BS. :(

  • http://twitter.com/Girltalkbf AlesheaDominique

I just had to explain to my mom that she was “Middle America” and why certain contestants will never have a chance when people like her vote. She didn’t understand until I pointed out that during one of the the boys belting his heart out all she could do was talking about if he was gay or not.

After years of voting and watching Idol I think she finally get its.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

Anyway, I liked everyone that we saw went through tonight. No one was amazing, but they were decent enough.

  • alonzo7

Just watched Josh Holiday on you tube because we haven’t seen much of him yet-perfect WG-does he play guitar????
He’s cute in a non threatening style  They must be keeping him in the shadows like Kris Allen.
I also liked Nick, Cortez,Devin, Paul and Charlie.
What’s with the reduction down to 12 about???

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5HGXDY5SA4QJRME7OQJXRJYE4M James M.

Watched up to Matheus and he was the only real failure today.

Cortez did MUCH better than the Whitney Houston song, Gurpreet and Devin also great.

Matheus came off as really insincere throughout most of the competition. Did he not sing with a live band for The Glee Project? Props to Nicki for calling out the pity party. She put it in a great way, too. Sometimes, guys are actually good singers, but their backstories are blinding us to how good they really are. And it’s sometimes the contestant’s fault. Matheus dug himself a grave.

  • dd999

Whew! a much better show tonite! Stand-outs for me were Nick Boddington on the keyboard singing ‘stars’. Wow! Also Paul Jolley singing ‘Stronger’. Mr. personality though he thinks not, is I think, Charlie Askew. lol

  • Ellessay

I’m disappointed that we aren’t hearing more of the singing.  I thought it was bad last night, but tonight was worse.  We have a local guy who, according to the spoilers makes it through to the Vegas round, but we’ve yet to hear him sing more than two or three seconds.  I wish they’d forget the back stories and let us hear more of the singing.  We’re making assumptions based on incomplete information.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/5HGXDY5SA4QJRME7OQJXRJYE4M James M.

Nicki could probably cut down on the harshness (she particularly reamed Paul Jolley and Papa Peachez a bit excessively, even though in Papa’s case it was pretty damn deserved), but it’s about damn time someone said something to these guys. That’s what I’ve been missing from Idol the past 2 years.

Peachez was pretty foolish and annoying. Paul couldn’t help it, I thought Nicki could’ve been a bit more reassuring without being dishonest

Keith is pretty awesome, too. Nicki and Keith are a great combination. I liked what Keith said to the really huge guy (who wasn’t very good at all). I’m warming up to Mariah, but she’s not a particularly notable presence there.

Nick and Charlie were really good. Charlie’s gotten more female than I have, and, looking at his awkwardness, it’s a little embarrassing for me lol. He’s really f*cking weird and he embraces it. That’s awesome. And he sings awesome. Definitely my favorite dude in the competition.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

I thought this was a much better episode. But I agree that there is still too much emphasis on certain people for their stories, and less on those who not only made it far, but has the talent worth showcasing. There are some people who I know from spoilers who deserved a lot more screen time than some…

Actually, now that I think about it, I’m disappointed we are not seeing more of people like David Willis and Elijah from last night. Would be nice to see Josh Holiday for a minute. I don’t think Papa Peaches deserved so much freaking air time. :/

  • Lexee234

I love when people like Nicholas Mathis come on, garner sympathy with their sob story…and then show themselves for who they really are when things don’t go their way. What a loser. The panel obviously made the right decision to let him go after that display.  It’s too bad he didn’t leave with dignity like gentleman Gabe (who deserved to stay, by the way).

Matheus was as annoying on Idol as he was on The Glee Project…he came on with the exact same sob story too. So glad Nicki called him out. Good riddance.

  • elliegrll

Nicki could probably cut down on the harshness (she particularly reamed Paul Jolley and Papa Peachez a bit excessively

I don’t think that she was being mean spirited in anything that she said.  She was calm, and even included a lot of praise for the guys, while at the same time telling them the truth.  It was a huge contrast to what Simon used to do.   He would embarrass people and tell them to give up on their dreams, and most of what he said was just for the cameras.

I wish this panel was getting as much media attention as Steven and Jennifer received during season 10.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Is it me or is Nikki irritating and that get-up she’s wearing?  What was that?

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

Loved Devin and Charlie. I didn’t care much about the rest of the guys. I’m very disappointed in Lazaro because that performance wasn’t good at all. God, I just love Nicki and how she calls out that sob story BS that we all hate. She definitely is queen of Idol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Charlie thumbs up!  Smart intro. (Somebody please shut up Nicki!)

  • lovetheusa1776

Think Charlie’s performance is one of the few that I’ll remember years from now.  His strangely beautiful pre-Raphaelite appearance may be one of the reasons, but his personality is very endearing.  Where he’ll end up musically is far beyond my powers to predict.  But very happy he’s here.

Why Nicki Minaj is the new Simon Cowell

A lot of these guys are gay. Just an observation from a gay man…

oh and the singing has just been so so.

  • LeahKittyS

Don’t worry about the good ones who got cut, people. If there is a Season 13, chances are one ore more of them will be back. Sometimes repeats can go very far (DeAndre, Colton, Hollie and Joshua proved that last year). There were lots of standouts tonight: Paul, Lazaro, Curtis, Devin, Gurpreet, Jimmy, Burnell, Nick, and Charlie.

  • RalphResty

That Finch guy is totally irritating!  His attitude and demeanor is so disgusting!  Yucks!

  • Xentusk

For a wallflower, Charlie is pretty quick witted with Nicki without the slightest hesitation.  Great responses and she was obviously impressed.

From that performance he’s the first standout for me

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

Aside from Larazo (I just don’t care for him), you’ve mentioned all my favourites tonight.

  • lovemyidol

Nick was easily the best and most memorable of tonight. Although Nicki’s voice is slightly annoying, her comments are right on. I hope they show more of that. Idol (and SYTYCD) has been lacking honest criticism for awhile.

As for Micah, I think he was robbed too. My theory is that he would be competing with Lazaro. Idol couldn’t have two guys competing against each other with speech impediments, like it would split their votes or something.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

As one myself,I noticed that as well. Nigel isn’t fooling anybody.

  • girlygirltoo

Watching the West Coast feed. 1/2 hour in and I haven’t seen one decent person yet. I know the judges lved Devin, but I heard way to many unnecessary embellishments in his performance. Lots of off key singing by other guys.

Charlie hasn’t been shown yet. I liked his audition, so hoping I’ll like him tonight.

ETA – I didn’t see any of yesterday’s show since I was at Kris’ concert. So I’m just going off what I see tonight :)

  • elliegrll

A lot of the male contestants on American Idol have been gay.  That’s really not something that is news or shocking.

I think that Nicki is better than Simon Cowell.  She’s giving advice, and doling out constructive criticism.  But, I do wonder if people would be happier to have someone who was being mean just to get laughs out of the audience, like Simon did.  That would probably get more press than someone who is just being honest, and saying the same things that many fans are saying or posting.

  • girlygirltoo

Ok, Nick is the first guy that I’ve liked tonight

Charlie is unique/odd and is likable. Not a great performance but he needs to get through to the next round

  • http://twitter.com/mafs95 Mafalda Abreu

I can’t wait to watch Zoanette performing in Hollywood. I bet it will be crazy!!

  • girlygirltoo

why did so many of the guys pick Jar of Hearts to sing? (I hate that song, lol)

  • girlygirltoo

Well, based on tonight’s performances, the girls don’t have much to worry about. Aside from Charlie and Nick, no one interested me. I was surprised Micah got cut, he was one of the best ones I heard

  • roarpen

I’m liking Nicki and Keith with their good and insightful critiques.

  • LeahKittyS

Yes, we’ve seen many gay contestants over the years; there were some you could just tell by listening. And among the “Chosen Ones” (Top 10/12/13), 4 of them are out and proud: Jim Verraros, RJ Helton, Clay Aiken, and Adam Lambert. I am happy to see the show becoming more tolerant of gay and genderqueer people; no way in hell JDA would have made it this far if Simon were still on the panel.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

That kid Devin plays the guitar. just saying ;)

  • http://MJO judes

From what Ive seen on here it looks like this show is much better than the groups[we don't get the telecast until tonight]
leahKittyS -I am happy for gays/genderqueer people to be put through as long as they are talented & not just put through for amusement. From what I’ve seen of JDA the latter seems to be the case so I hope he doesn’t get through to the Top 20 & put out someone more talented.

  • Tom22

Crass as it might seem (lol fancy that from the show!)  I think they decided one contestant with a speech impediment was enough and went with lazlo as they thought they had better choices in Micah’s genre (what they expect him to sing at least..we know how they like to peg them in a hole these days)

  • LeahKittyS

All I meant was someone who came in as freakishly dressed as JDA wouldn’t stand a chance with Simon around. Even Adam Lambert left his Zodiac garb at home when he went to Hollywood. We’ve barely heard this guy sing, so I’m withholding judgment of him until we see him in Las Vegas.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I wish they would have invited Micah back for next year.  I think he is talented enough.  I hope he does returm!

  • springboard2

I have hardly watched this show so far, but I have just caught up with this last episode here, and I was impressed. I thought that the talent was overall of a high standard, the judges were to the point and the episode was generally entertaining.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

It was an entertaining show tonight!  I am starting to get use to Nicki and she’s doing a GOOD job as a judge!

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

Uh oh. LOL. Well to be fair, he’s not a “typical” WGWG. He is Latino. ;)

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Devin? The strawberry blonde, pale dude is Latino?

  • hcpoirot

The producer seem to do all they can to have a girl winning this year. Thats why the top 28 boy filled with mediocre to good but not great singers.

They pick JDA but cut out Micah and Gabe???

Like most of us predict, we will  had very strong 5 top girl but an okay 5 top boy. Just like season 3.

But can a girl win this year? And do we need a girl to win Idol just because Jordin was the last girl winner? (And not because of star quality)

Considering Scotty and P2 doing very well and none of the girls doing as well as them from season 10 and 11?

  • macfae

Charlie is my favorite so far …I ..like his voice and love his confidence and humor. He know who he is.
Holding out on anyone else until I hear more …they all need to step it up next time….andI’m looking forward to finally seeing who they have been keeping under wraps.
Never thought I would ever say it but I love Nicki ….she’s entertaining and so often is right on the money with her critiques.
I expected to like Keith but he is even better than I hoped

  • HKfan

I don’t mind that Micah and Gabe got cut. Neither of them would have made it outside Idol, neither had the looks or the IT factor.

  • maymirabella

I was wondering that too, alonzo. As i think another wgwg type or country music cute guy wins. So I predict if Josh, Jolley or Johnny K make voting rounds, one of them wins or if not one of them, then Jiimmy. But I really really hope I am wrong.

  • maymirabella

True Alesha but is it more Middle America in terms of Idol voters more so than overall middle america perhaps as referenced by other things other than reality show voters?

  • maymirabella

I think Curtis should setteown and stop that but I still really love his voice. But i do not find him disgusting, just a little annoying

  • Whatiswrongwithus

Paul Jolley had a strong, rockish, theatrical type of voice that was nice and different. And he’s kinda cute too but…..something tells me he isn’t straight. Aw Shucks for me and the ladies lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

“I hope the awesomeness that s the American Idol 12 judging panel isn’t just an editing room created mirage. Remember when we loved Steven, Jennifer and Randy in the beginning of Season 10?  Here’s hoping Nicki and Keith don’t get bored or scared once the live shows begin.”

I’m loving both Keith and Nicki as well. I’m hoping that what we’re seeing isn’t a result of “creative” editing either.  Both Keith and Nicki seem really focused and engaged. Both Keith and Nicki are looking for artists. Keith has the nicest way of being honest, while lletting down people gently. I love Nicki’s honesty too. Let’s hope that this continues during the live rounds.

“Nicki in particular continues to shine in her role as judge. She’s wonderful.”

I agree with everything that you wrote about Nicki. She was right to call out Paul and Matteus, and she did them a favor by doing so. They need to realize that it’s not entertaining for people to see you constantly refer to your sob story or reveal such nervousness that it makes the viewer uncomfortable (which Paul did for me). For me, none of that is entertaining or enjoyable.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Oh Mariah misses the runs. *MASSIVE EYE ROLL*. She’s so wrong here.”

Yeah, I thought that she was totally wrong about Micah too, but given her own singing style, I’m not surprised that she didn’t think that there was enough melisma. lol

  • RalphResty

Why did they cut Micah?  The guy is good.  If there’s anybody who deserves to be eliminated, it’s that Finch guy.  His voice is not even passably good.  Stupid judges!

  • fuzzywuzzy

“He claims that he has never sung with a live band before. O rly?  Did he learn nothing WHEN HE WAS A CONTESTANT ON THE GLEE PROJECT TWO YEARS AGO? ”

Oh, so Matteus outright lied about that? lol After massacring “Stronger”, it’s just as well he was cut.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    About Charlie, MJ wrote:
“This dude is strange and wonderful at the same time.”

I feel the same way. He’s odd, but not in a way that is creepy, and that strangeness combined with his unique singing and very good voice make him interesting, entertaining and a real contender (if he gets into the voting rounds). Charlie is intriguing and I like how unpredictable he is.

  • potatorocks

Nick Boddington is really really good.  He is my favorite as of now.
Charlie Askew is interesting—if he does not lose himself in the competition(think Siobahn), reins in the oversinging(think Siobahn) and does not become annoying(think HeeJun)—he should do well.  I like him.

Nikki and Keith are stand out judges but I don’t hate Mariah.  I think the three are a great combination—Randy is unnecessary.  I am so hoping they meet our expectations in the live rounds.

  • Ratchet13

MJ why are you acting like Mariah sent Micah home all by her lonesome? The other judges voted too. And, if they disagreed they sure didn’t say anything not even your precious Nicki. She loves to interrupt Mariah, but not a peep was heard in support of Micah. How much is Nigel paying you?

  • chillj

I don’t think there is a one in the lot for mid-life women to crush on:  I was very surprised.

  • Ratchet13

When did she say there weren’t enough runs. Micah’s performance was good not great. And, Mariah Carey knows better than anybody on that panel knows what the industry does to artists that look like Micah. As talented as they are they end up being back up singers.

  • jga94

Impressed with Paul Jolley’s singing plus Nick and Devin. Charlie was the most interesting personality. Curtis seems like a technically good singer but his performances seemed put on–not feeling him….I can understand why he did not make it last year….Joshua Ledet–a singer with a similar style–flat out destroys this guy…

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

Don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I don’t find Johnny Keyser very attractive.

  • Montavilla

The thing about Matheus and his backstory is, I would have totally bought him if he’d used the story I already know about him — that he was on the Glee Project, worked like hell to get on it, worked like hell when he was on it, but got cut.

    That’s a compelling story.

But, by going with the sob story, Matheus lied.  I think we all to some extent that people exaggerate their backstories.  But to outright lie is something the audience is never going to get behind.  And I can’t even blame that one on Nigel and his editors.  It was a deliberate effort by Matheus to change his package from “short and proud of it” to “short and oppressed by it.”

Thank you, Nicki, for calling him out.

  • fuzzywuzzy

MJ was the one who wrote that “Mariah misses the runs”, but I think that Micah’s rendition was a little too unembellished for Mariah (which would make sense since she sings with so much melisma).

  • Miss Chaos

Most of the guys on the show seemed to not be straight, not that there is anything wrong with that.  But I still dont mind seeing the cute non straight guys, we will never get to meet them anyhow.  Its funny, I wonder how many girls will be non straight and if we will notice. JMO!

  • Ratchet13

She said she thought Micah would do something else with the song. That’s it. That’s not add more runs Micah. It’s a great assumption to make to be dismissive.

  • http://twitter.com/mafs95 Mafalda Abreu

Yeah, the guys were a bit dull in my opinion but I also liked Devin Velez. I think his performance had some little unnecessary embellishments to the song, but his voice is really good and with some good coaching, he may become a dark horse. But that’s just my opinion :)

  • http://twitter.com/mafs95 Mafalda Abreu

I don’y have problem with Scotty and P2 winning their seasons of American Idol, but I daresay it was unfair that they had NEVER been in the Bottom 3, when obviously they were not always the best ones.

What I think that irritates people the most (including me) is the fact that it seems that a white guy with a guitar and who changes the melody of a song is immediately labeled as an “artist” and people just lose their ability to correctly judge or critique the performance. For instance, P2 had a great raspy voice with some power, but it is also true that he had some pitch problems. I know, nobody is perfect in what comes to pitch but people just seemed to ignore that about him.

It seems that if a boy is a front-runner, his fan base will be loyal to them no matter what, but with girls it’s quite different. Whenever we have a girl who is an early front-runner, she ends up being eliminated much sooner than what everybody thought because her fan base may be as strong as the guy’s one but it just isn’t as loyal. Believe me, Melanie Amaro only won her season of X Factor because Simon scared the hell out of her fans by “eliminating” her in the Judges’ Houses and they lost that feeling of “She’s safe”.

Sorry for the long post!! :p

  • http://twitter.com/mafs95 Mafalda Abreu

Paul Jolley is cute, but he’s good-average as a singer imo.

  • Aaron Baird

As mentioned by other posters, JDA would have been cut immediately with Simon on the panel.  Even with vocal talent, his OTT outfits and how he carries himself leaves the impression that this is all played up for TV.  What is the difference between JDA and that guy, that sang “Tellin’ me I am not going” over and over again, as a pure joke contestant?

Nick visually reminds me of Phil Stacy.

The heavy handed producer influence this season is really stacking the deck against the guys.  The editing leaves a lot to be desired.  Outside of a select few people, I cannot tell you who 1/2 of the guys in the top 28 are and what genre of music is their wheelhouse.  It seems like a an abnormal high concentration of the guys are R&B/ pop singers.  I hope there is much more musical diversity, or they will lose me.

As a fan of hard rock music, I have not seen any male, other than Gabe with the ability to carry an aggressive rock tune.  Maybe one of the girls will surprise me and sing like Lzzy Hale.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“She said she thought Micah would do something else with the song. That’s it. That’s not add more runs Micah. It’s a great assumption to make to be dismissive.”

As I wrote, MJ was the one who wrote this:

Oh Mariah misses the runs. *MASSIVE EYE ROLL*. She’s so wrong here.

so rather than direct your complaint to ME, I would recommend that you direct your post to HER.

As far as my comments, I’m not assuming or being dismissive, just speculating what Mariah meant based on her own singing style.

And, for what it’s worth, Michael Slezak seems to have the same impression in his recap, so clearly the speculation is not unreasonable:

Mariah, though, seemed to imply that the “interesting” song choice and straightforward, melisma-free delivery was problematic.
