American Idol 12- Contestant Preview #8- Kamaria Ousley

And now for something a little different, we have Kamaria Ousley. She’s a 2005 graduate from Berklee College of Music, which means she’s pretty old by now. She’s on the upper end of the contestants, for sure. She’s also from Oakland, CA.

She’s old school R&B. She could be interesting on the show, ala Nadia Turner, or she could be out of her element completely. Her background, age, and experience would probably make her better suited for The Voice. Idol tends to enjoy less polished singers, and she’s pretty polished.

Check out the stuff below, and sound off in the comments.

A Long Walk

I can’t remember the name of the song, and it’s not in the title, but it’s familiar…

Another song with no title

Second song is “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder

    Joshua Ledet – I Wish – Top 13

  • Li Wright

By going on AI she’s got a BETTER chance at a) getting a record contract b) getting Broadway shows; c) getting event work….if she’s on any of those shows, she would disappear into the wind.

  • No Thanks

Wouldn’t it be cool if we got a Jill Scott / Erykah Badu type on the show?  Or a Sade?  That would be something different.

I’d like to hear “Long Walk” sung on Idol.

The third song is Great Is My Faithfulness. It’s a religious song. My mom used to sing that in church, it was her solo. :)

I like her. Its hard to get a proper feel from these videos but if she goes in a more neo-soulish direction like No Thanks is talking about I’m in.

  • Jake Williams

Meh, Don’t really care for her.

  • George Wilson

She has the Amy Winehouse vibe to her voice. She doesn’t have a strong presence– the audience will definitely not vote because of that.

  • Leandro

Not a chance in hell of her winning, even back in the day.

  • Kariann Hart

Nadia Turner was exciting and unpredictable.  I’d look forward each week to see what she would wear and how she fixed her hair.  Kamaria sings good, but is there more?

Old school R&B  isn’t “something different” for Idol. zzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • WestiesRule

Not impressed either. I agree about being suited for The Voice

Hmmm.. examples of the most well known people who represent new & hot in R&B:

Another well regarded artist from the last few years, Jessica Sanchez covered her, this was her biggest hit:

The thing is, if any of those people showed up on Idol, I have no confidence that people wouldn’t call them old fashioned and boring (ESPECIALLY Ellie Varner). After all what would they sing? Old R&B songs. The audience wouldn’t know any new ones, plus a lot of the new ones sound like classic soul songs with a bit more of a backbeat, or someone singing over one long hip hop-ish beat. A good modern R&B voice pretty much sounds like this girl here. It’s a bit of a conundrum, isn’t it? Can’t win for losing. You’d basically have to be Usher – dancing around on stage wile singing something that hit big on pop – to make a dent as a “modern” R&B act.

That said I agree she has no stage presence in these videos, and I don’t see tons of personality. But I’ll wait for the TV version to full judge that. But she has a good voice for modern R&B IMO.
